Powerful avalanches were recorded for the first time in an underwater canyon that lies 100 s of km from land. This challenges a long-held view and indicates > 1000 similar canyons worldwide actively pump sediment and pollutants into the deep-sea.

The field of cohesive soil erosion is still not fully understood, in large part due to the many soil parameters that affect cohesive soil erodibility. This study is focused on two channels, 2-Mile and 8-Mile channels in northern Manitoba, Canada, that were built to connect Lake Winnipeg with Playgreen Lake and Playgreen Lake with Kiskikittogisu Lake, respectively. The banks of the channels consist of clay rich soils and alluvial deposits of layered clay, silts and sands. The study of erosion at the sites is further complicated because the flow-induced erosion is combined with the effects of significant wave action due to the large fetch length on the adjacent lakes, particularly Lake Winnipeg that is the seventh largest lake in North America. The study included three main components: field measurements, laboratory experiments and numerical modelling. Field measurements consisted of soil sampling from the banks and bed of the channels, current measurements and water sampling. Grab soil samples were used to measure the essential physical and electrochemical properties of the riverbanks, and standard ASTM Shelby tube samples were used to estimate the critical shear stress and erodibility of the soil samples using an erosion measurement device (EMD). Water samples were taken to estimate the sediment concentration profile and also to monitor changes in sediment concentration along the channels over time. An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was used to collect bathymetry and current data, and two water level gauges have been installed to record water levels at the entrance and outlet of the channels. The MIKE 21 NSW model was used to simulate waves using historical winds and measured bathymetry of the channels and lakes. Finally, results from the wave numerical model, laboratory tests and current measurement were used to estimate the effect of each component on erodibility of the cohesive banks.

Background The response of heart rate to changes in exercise intensity is comprised of several dynamic modes with differing magnitudes and temporal characteristics. Investigations of empirical identification of dynamic models of heart rate showed that second-order models gave substantially and significantly better model fidelity compared to the first order case. In the present work, we aimed to reanalyse data from previous studies to more closely consider the effect of including a zero and a pure delay in the model. Methods This is a retrospective analysis of 22 treadmill (TM) and 54 cycle ergometer (CE) data sets from a total of 38 healthy participants. A linear, time-invariant plant model structure with up to two poles, a zero and a dead time is considered. Empirical estimation of the free parameters was performed using least-squares optimisation. The primary outcome measure is model fit, which is a normalised root-mean-square model error. Results A model comprising parallel connection of two first-order transfer functions, one with a dead time and one without, was found to give the highest fit (56.7 % for TM, 54.3 % for CE), whereby the non-delayed component appeared to merely capture initial transients in the data and the part with dead time likely represented the true dynamic response of heart rate to the excitation. In comparison, a simple first-order model without dead time gave substantially lower fit than the parallel model (50.2 % for TM, 47.9 % for CE). Conclusions This preliminary analysis points to a linear first-order system with dead time as being an appropriate model for heart rate response to exercise using treadmill and cycle ergometer modalities. In order to avoid biased estimates, it is vitally important that, prior to parameter estimation and validation, careful attention is paid to data preprocessing in order to eliminate transients and trends.

Background. Organic nitrates (e.g. nitroglycerin) are highly selective dilators of muscular conduit arteries. By contrast, the endogenous inorganic nitrite anion (NO2−) is thought to be a hypoxia-dependent dilator of small resistance arterioles, via its reduction to vasodilating nitric oxide (NO) by deoxyhaemoglobin. Objective. To establish selectivity of nitrite for resistance versus conduit arteries. Methods and Results A series of forearm blood flow (FABF) studies were performed in healthy volunteers. Intra-brachial sodium nitrite (8.7 μmol/min) markedly increased radial artery diameter (assessed using ultrasound) by 37.6 ± 9.7% (P < 0.001), with HbO2 ∼99%. Furthermore, nitrite (0.087–87 μmol/min) displayed similar selectivity as nitroglycerin (0.003–1 μg/min) for conduit arteries, compared to resistance arterioles (FABF). Intravenous administration of sodium nitrite (8.7 μmol/min) dilated the contralateral radial artery by 10.7 ± 1.8% (P < 0.01) and lowered central systolic blood pressure (BP) by ~12mmHg from 98.3 ± 12.3 to 86.7 ± 15.1 mmHg (P = 0.02) without any change in peripheral BP; nitrite also reduced augmentation index and pulse wave velocity. In contrast to nitrite’s effects on FABF, induction of hypoxia (breathing 12% O2) paradoxically inhibited nitrite-induced dilatation of the radial artery to a similar extent as hyperoxia/ breathing 100% O2 (both P < 0.001 compared to normoxia). Conclusions. Contrary to expectation, inorganic nitrite is a normoxia-dependent selective conduit artery dilator with similar selectivity to nitroglycerin. A specific advantage of nitrite is that it lacks the problems of development of tolerance and endothelial dysfunction, which limit the efficacy of organic nitrates. The selective central BP-lowering effects of nitrite have therapeutic potential to reduce cardiovascular events.

Student engagement is critical for meaningful learning and can be impacted by teaching methods, tools, and course content. Online student engagement continues to be challenging because online classes offer fewer ways to engage with professors, peers, and the university than in-person classes. PlayPosit is a video teaching tool that incorporates questions to check for understanding. Our study aimed to evaluate how a PlayPosit guided group project impacted engagement in a structured online learning environment. For this qualitative study, a PlayPosit guided group project was implemented in an online undergraduate course taught via Canvas learning management system. Engagement was evaluated using online course analytics and student's written feedback. Canvas reports were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and students' written feedback was analyzed using directed content analysis. All 29 students enrolled in the course completed the course successfully. They completed 99.3% of the PlayPosit activities with accuracy 87.6-100% and completed the course project with scores 89-100%. Student comments were grouped into themes related to PlayPosit, group project, and engagement. Students found PlayPosit activities helpful/beneficial, aligned with deliverables, a great learning resource, and enjoyable. Students recognized the group project for its importance in teaching them collaboration, expressed that it enabled them to learn more from each-other, was an enjoyable networking experience, and was challenging. Engagement themes included knowledge gained was applicable to the real world, the course stimulated higher-order thinking, and the course was enjoyable and kept students wanting more. This study suggested that a PlayPosit guided group project was well-received by students and contributed to high engagement with the content, peers, and the professor.
