This paper redescribes and illustrates five currently poorly known species of soft scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Coccidae) originally described by Ryoichi Takahashi, namely Coccus lumpurensis Takahashi, Maacoccus scolopiae (Takahashi), Membranaria sacchari (Takahashi), Platylecanium cyperi Takahashi and P. mesuae Takahashi. Lectotypes are designated for C. lumpurensis, P. cyperi and P. mesuae. Two of these species are known only from Taiwan, and three from Malaysia. Their status and relationships are discussed. A key to the species of Maacoccus is included.

1. Variation in genome size spans multiple orders of magnitude among animals. Despite the longstanding debate regarding the adaptive value or costs of genomic complexity, genome size has been proposed to influence extinction risk under the rapidly changing environments of the Anthropocene.2. The main hypothesis suggests that genome enlargement increases the accumulation of deleterious mutations while reducing rates of organismal growth and development. These combined effects of larger genome size are predicted to trigger population declines that can lead to extinction, especially under rapidly changing environments that disrupt demographic resilience.3. Comparative evidence from terrestrial plants and across vertebrates has provided mixed support for this hypothesis. However, large-scale comparative studies based on explicit phylogenetic approaches remain lacking. Using a global-scale amphibian dataset and two recognised proxies of extinction risk (International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN conservation categories and population trends), we test the prediction that genomes are larger (as estimated by C-value) in species facing extinction risk. We combine these analyses with life-history traits widely known to be implicated with extinctions (body size, fecundity), along with a range of environmental factors.4. Our phylogenetic analyses consistently failed to identify an effect of genome size on either of the two proxies for extinction risk. The only consistent predictor of extinction risk observed across models performed for amphibians combined and for orders separately was decreasing geographical range size. We also identified a role for larger body size, decreasing range of environmental temperature (for anurans) and increasing levels of UV-B radiation (for salamanders) as drivers of increasing threat.5. Our study provides no support for the prediction that species with larger genomes suffer heightened risk of extinction. We discuss some fundamental limitations underlying the genome size-extinction hypothesis, and suggest that it is not a promising avenue to elucidate the causes of biodiversity declines in the Anthropocene.

The objectives of the study were to compare intraocular pressure (IOP) readings across a wide range and obtained via three rebound tonometers in ADAMTS10-mutant Beagle-derived dogs with different stages of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and normal control dogs and to investigate the effect of central corneal thickness (CCT).Measurements were performed on 99 eyes from 50 Beagle-derived dogs with variable genetics-16 non-glaucomatous and 34 with ADAMTS10-OAG. Seventeen OAG eyes were measured twice-with and without the use of IOP-lowering medications.IOP was measured in each eye using three tonometers with their "dog" setting-ICare® Tonovet (TV), ICare® Tonovet Plus® (TVP), and the novel Reichert® Tono-Vera® Vet (TVA)-in randomized order. CCT was measured with the Accutome® PachPen. Statistical analyses included one-way ANOVA, Tukey pairwise comparisons, and regression analyses of tonometer readings and pairwise IOP-CCT Pearson correlations (MiniTab®).A total of 116 IOP measurements were taken with each of the three tonometers. When comparing readings over a range of ~7-77 mmHg, mean IOPs from the TV were significantly lower compared with TVP (-4.6 mmHg, p .001) and TVA (-3.7 mmHg, p = .001). We found no significant differences between TVA and TVP measurements (p = .695). There was a moderate positive correlation between CCT and IOP for TVA (r = 0.53, p .001), TVP (r = 0.48, p .001), and TV (r = 0.47, p .001).Our data demonstrate strong agreement between TVP and TVA, suggesting that the TVA may similarly reflect true IOP values in canines. CCT influenced IOP measurements of all three tonometers.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) therapeutics are the largest and fastest growing class of biologic drugs, amongst which, the vast majority are immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1). Their antigen binding abilities are used for the treatment of immunologic diseases, cancer therapy, reversal of drug effects, and targeting viruses and bacteria. The high importance of therapeutic mAbs and their derivatives has called for the generation of well-characterized standards for method development and calibration. One such standard, the NISTmAb RM 8621 based on the antibody motavizumab, has been developed by the National Institute of Technologies and Standards (NIST) in the US. Here, we present the resonance assignment of the single chain variable fragment, NISTmAb-scFv, that was engineered by linking the variable domains of the heavy and light chains of the NISTmAb. Also, addition of a peptide, corresponding to the target antigen of motavizumab, to samples of NISTmAb-scFv has induced chemical shift perturbations on residues lining the antigen binding interface thereby indicating proper folding of the NISTmAb-scFv.

During a brief visit to the West African Rice Development Association (WARDA) in Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire, several samples of scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) were collected. Amongst these was an undescribed genus and species of soft scale (Coccidae: Coccinae), Bandamacoccus labiosus Hodgson (gen. nov. and sp. nov.). The adult female and second-instar male nymph are described below. A striking feature of both stages is the large size of the labium, which is wider than the clypeolabral shield, whilst the second-instar male also has a prominent inner submarginal band of ventral microducts.

Optimal recovery of arm function following stroke requires patients to perform a large number of functional arm movements in clinical therapy sessions, as well as at home. Technology to monitor adherence to this activity would be helpful to patients and clinicians. Current approaches to monitoring arm movements are limited because of challenges in distinguishing between functional and non-functional movements. Here, we present an Arm Rehabilitation Monitor (ARM), a device intended to make such measurements in an unobtrusive manner. The ARM device is based on a single Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) worn on the wrist and uses machine learning techniques to interpret the resulting signals. We characterized the ability of the ARM to detect reaching actions in a functional assessment dataset (functional assessment tasks) and an Activities-of-Daily-Living (ADL) dataset (pizza-making and walking task) from 12 participants with stroke. The Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Random Forests (RF) classifiers had a Matthews Correlation Coefficient score of 0.59 and 0.58 when trained and tested on the functional dataset, 0.50 and 0.49 when trained and tested on the ADL dataset, and 0.37 and 0.36 when trained on the functional dataset and tested on the ADL dataset, respectively. The latter is the most relevant scenario for the intended application of training during a clinical visit for monitoring movements in the in-home setting. The classifiers showed good performance in estimating the time spent reaching and number of reaching gestures and showed low sensitivity to irrelevant arm movements produced during walking. We conclude that the ARM has sufficient accuracy and robustness to merit being used in preliminary studies to monitor arm activity in rehabilitation or home applications.
