1. Real-time flow cytometry to assess qualitative and quantitative responses of oral pathobionts during exposure to antiseptics

Abstract: ABSTRACT Antiseptics are widely used in oral healthcare to prevent or treat oral diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis. However, the incidence of bacteria being tolerant to standard antiseptics has sharply increased over the last few years. This stresses the urgency for surveillance against tolerant organisms, as well as the discovery of novel antimicrobials. Traditionally, susceptibility to antimicrobials is assessed by broth micro-dilution or disk diffusion assays, both of which are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and provide limited information on the mode of action of the antimicrobials. The abovementioned limitations highlight the need for the development of new methods to monitor and further understand antimicrobial susceptibility. In this study, we used real-time flow cytometry, combined with membrane permeability staining, as a quick and sensitive technology to study the quantitative and qualitative responses of two oral pathobionts to different concentrations of chlorhexidine (CHX), cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), or triclosan. Apart from the real-time monitoring of cell damage, we further applied a phenotypic fingerprinting method to differentiate between the bacterial subpopulations that arose due to treatment. We quantified the pathobiont damage rate of different antiseptics at different concentrations within 15 minutes of exposure and identified the conditions under which the bacteria were most susceptible. Moreover, we detected species-specific and treatment-specific phenotypic subpopulations. This proves that real-time flow cytometry can provide information on the susceptibility of different microorganisms in a short time frame while differentiating between antiseptics and thus could be a valuable tool in the discovery of novel antimicrobial compound, while at the same time deciphering their mode of action.IMPORTANCEWith increasing evidence that microorganisms are becoming more tolerant to standard antimicrobials, faster and more accessible antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods are needed. However, traditional susceptibility assays are laborious and time-consuming. To overcome the abovementioned limitations, we introduce a novel approach to define antimicrobial susceptibility in a much shorter time frame with the use of real-time flow cytometry. Furthermore, phenotypic fingerprinting analysis can be applied on the data to study the way antiseptics affect the bacterial cell morphology over time and, thus, gain information on the mode of action of a certain compound.

Abstract: Abstract During the second long shutdown period of the CERN accelerator complex (LS2, 2019-2021), several upgrade activities took place at the n_TOF facility. The most important have been the replacement of the spallation target with a next generation nitrogen-cooled lead target. Additionally, a new experimental area, at a very short distance from the target assembly (the NEAR Station) was established. In this paper, the core commissioning actions of the new installations are described. The improvement in the n_TOF infrastructure was accompanied by several detector development projects. All these upgrade actions are discussed, focusing mostly on the future perspectives of the n_TOF facility. Furthermore, some indicative current and future measurements are briefly reported.

Abstract: 73Ge(n,γ) cross sections were measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN up to neutron energies of 300 keV, providing for the first time experimental data above 8 keV. Results indicate that the stellar cross section at kT=30 keV is 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than most theoretical predictions. The new cross sections result in a substantial decrease of 73Ge produced in stars, which would explain the low isotopic abundance of 73Ge in the solar system. Abstract: The neutron capture cross section of 154Gd was measured from 1 eV to 300 keV in the experimental area located 185 m from the CERN n_TOF neutron spallation source, using a metallic sample of gadolinium, enriched to 67% in 154Gd. The capture measurement, performed with four C6D6 scintillation detectors, has been complemented by a transmission measurement performed at the GELINA time-of-flight facility (JRC-Geel), thus minimising the uncertainty related to sample composition. An accurate Maxwellian averaged capture cross section (MACS) was deduced over the temperature range of interest for s process nucleosynthesis modelling. We report a value of 880(50) mb for the MACS at kT=30 keV, significantly lower compared to values available in literature. The new adopted 154Gd(n,γ) cross section reduces the discrepancy between observed and calculated solar s-only isotopic abundances predicted by s-process nucleosynthesis models. Abstract: Neutron-induced cross sections represent the main nuclear input to models of stellar and Big-Bang nucleosynthesis. While (n,γ) reactions are relevant for the formation of elements heavier than iron, (n,p) and (n,α) reactions can play an important role in specific cases. The time-of-flight method is routinely used at n_TOF to experimentally determine the cross section data. In addition, recent upgrades of the facility will allow the use of activation techniques as well, possibly opening the way to a systematic study of neutron interaction with radioactive isotopes. In the last 20 years n_TOF has provided a large amount of experimental data for Nuclear Astrophysics. Our plan is to carry on challenging measurements and produce nuclear data in the next decades as well.

Abstract: Nuclear level densities (NLDs) and photon strength functions (PSFs), also called ¿ -ray or radiation strength functions, represent average properties of the nucleus in the regime of excitation where individual levels and transition probabilities by ¿ decay are not readily accessible by experimental or theoretical means. 9. Long-term results of more than 13 years after arthroscopic repair of triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) Palmer 1B tears: a comparison with short- and mid-term results

Abstract: Goal of this study was the assessment of long-term outcome of arthroscopically assisted repair of Palmer 1B/Atzei 1 triangular fibrocartilage complex tears and the comparison with short- and mid-term results. The study included nineteen patients (mean 49.2 years of age) with a mean follow-up time of 13.6 years (13.1–14.3 years). Examination parameters included disabilities of arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) questionnaire, modified Mayo Wrist Score (MMWS), Krimmer Score, determination of range of motion in comparison to the contralateral extremity. Grip and pinch grip strength measurement and pain level assessment was performed, as well. The mean MMWS after at least 13.1 years was 95.8 (85–100, SD 5.6). Mean DASH Score was 10.2 (0–55.8, SD 13.6). Mean Krimmer Score was 97.2 (85–100, SD 4.8). Grip strength reached 101% of the contralateral unaffected hand. Range of motion did not differ significantly in comparison to the healthy contralateral extremity. None of the patients suffered from major complications. Fourteen of nineteen patients regarded pain level reduction as excellent. Five patients reported a relevant pain level reduction. Sixteen of nineteen patients regarded functional outcome as excellent, the other three patients reported on a pleasing improvement of the functional outcome. Arthroscopically assisted repair of Palmer 1B/Atzei 1 triangular fibrocartilage complex tears may be an efficacious and safe surgical technique for ulnar-sided TFCC tears in the long term.

10. Real-Time Flow Cytometry to assess qualitative and quantitative responses of oral pathobionts during exposure to antiseptics

Abstract: Antiseptics are widely used in oral healthcare to prevent or treat oral diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis. However, the incidence of bacteria being tolerant to standard antiseptics has sharply increased over the last few years. This stresses the urgency for surveillance against tolerant organisms, as well as the discovery of novel antimicrobials. Traditionally, susceptibility to antimicrobials is assessed by broth micro-dilution or disc diffusion assays, both of which are time-consuming, labor-intensive and provide limited information on the mode of action of the antimicrobials. The above-mentioned limitations highlight the need for the development of new methods to monitor and further understand antimicrobial susceptibility. Here, we used real-time flow cytometry, combined with membrane permeability staining, as a quick and sensitive technology to study the quantitative and qualitative response of two oral pathobionts to different concentrations of chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride or triclosan. Apart from the real-time monitoring of cell damage, we further applied a phenotypic fingerprint method to differentiate between the bacterial subpopulations that arose due to treatment. We quantified the pathobiont damage rate of different antiseptics at different concentrations within 15 minutes of exposure and identified the conditions under which the bacteria were most susceptible. Moreover, we detected species-specific and treatment-specific phenotypic subpopulations. This proves that real-time flow cytometry can provide information on the susceptibility of different microorganisms in a short time frame while differentiating between antiseptics and thus could be a valuable tool in the discovery of novel antimicrobial compounds while at the same time deciphering their mode of action.

Abstract: Objectives Various classifications of acromion morphology exist in the literature. Only a few studies have compared these classifications and their results vary substantially. The primary purpose of this study was to determine a correlation between different classifications of acromial morphology on a large cohort. The secondary purpose was to establish if there is a difference between age, sides and gender. Methods A retrospective analysis of 1853 subjects' shoulder CTs has been performed. A total of 350 CT scans of polytraumatised patients have been selected out of the initial cohort, after exclusion of fractures and technically insufficient scans. Acromial slope, type, lateral acromion angle (LAA) and acromion index were measured and gender, age and side differences were analysed. Correlations between the different classifications were analysed using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results The average patient age of this cohort was 48 (range 16–90). There were 232 men and 118 women. There was a significant correlation between all classifications. Excellent correlations have been shown for left-right comparison of all measurements. Gender showed no correlation to any of the measurements. Age was correlated to LAA and acromial type. Conclusion There is a significant correlation between all investigated acromion classifications, demonstrated with the CT. This may aid the clinician in choosing a classification to use when reporting on a patient, depending on the pathology even when plain X-rays are obtained. Age is correlated to LAA and acromial type. There is a strong bilateral correlation within each patient. Gender is not correlated to the acromial shape in any classification. Level of evidence Level III diagnostic study.

Abstract: The 235U(n,f) cross section was measured in a wide energy range (18 meV–170 keV) at the n_TOF facility at CERN, relative to 6Li(n,t) and 10B(n,α) standard reactions, with high resolution and accuracy, with a setup based on a stack of six samples and six silicon detectors placed in the neutron beam. In this paper we report on the results in the region between 18 meV and 10 keV neutron energy. A resonance analysis has been performed up to 200 eV, with the code SAMMY. The resulting fission kernels are compared with the ones extracted on the basis of the resonance parameters of the most recent major evaluated data libraries.Acomparison of the n_TOF datawith the evaluated cross sections is also performed from thermal to 10 keV neutron energy for the energy-averaged cross section in energy groups of suitably chosen width. A good agreement, within 0.5%, is found on average between the new results and the latest evaluated data files ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3, as well as with respect to the broad group average fission cross section established in the framework of the standard working group of IAEA (the so-called reference file). However, some discrepancies, of up to 4%, are still present in some specific energy regions. The newdataset here presented, characterized by a unique combination of high resolution and accuracy, low background and wide energy range, can help to improve the evaluations from the Resolved Resonance Region up to 10 keV, also reducing the uncertainties that affect this region., CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research)

Abstract: Accurate neutron capture cross section data for minor actinides (MAs) are required to estimate the production and transmutation rates of MAs in light water reactors, critical fast reactors like Gen-IV systems, and other innovative reactor systems such as accelerator driven systems (ADS). In particular, 244Cm, 246Cm and 248Cm play a role in the transport, storage and transmutation of the nuclear waste of the current nuclear reactors, due to the contribution of these isotopes to the radiotoxicity, neutron emission, and decay heat in the spent nuclear fuel. Also, capture reactions in these Cm isotopes open the path for the formation of heavier elements. In this work, the results of the capture cross section measurement on 244Cm, 246Cm and 248Cm performed at the CERN n_TOF facility are presented. It is important to notice that the Cm samples used in the experiment at n_TOF have been used previously in an experiment at J-PARC, this experiment and the previous one done in the 70s with a nuclear explosion were the only previous capture experiments for these isotopes. At n_TOF, the capture cross section measurements of 244Cm, 246Cm and 248Cm were performed at the 20 m vertical flight path (EAR2) with three C6D6 total energy detectors. In addition, the cross section of 244Cm was measured at the 185 m flight path (EAR1) with a Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC). The combination of measurements in EAR1 and EAR2 has contributed to controlling and reducing the systematic uncertainties in the results. The compatibility of the different measurements performed and the techniques to obtain the results are presented in this paper as well as the procedure to obtain the resonance parameters.

Abstract: The n_TOF neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN is used for nuclear data measurements. The n_TOF Collaboration works closely with the Nuclear Reaction Data Centres (NRDC) network to disseminate the experimental data through the international EXFOR library. In addition, the Collaboration helps integrate the results in the evaluated library projects. The present contribution describes the dissemination status of n_TOF results, their impact on evaluated libraries and ongoing efforts to provide n_TOF resonance parameters in ENDF-6 format for further use by evaluation projects.

Abstract: The neutron capture cross section of 241Am is an important quantity for nuclear energy production and fuel cycle scenarios. Several measurements have been performed in recent years with the aim to reduce existing uncertainties in evaluated data. Two previous measurements, performed at the 185 m flight-path station EAR1 of the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN, have permitted to substantially extend the resolved resonance region, but suffered in the near-thermal energy range from the unfavorable signal-to-background ratio resulting from the combination of the high radioactivity of 241Am and the rather low thermal neutron flux. The here presented 241Am(n,γ) measurement, performed with C6D6 liquid scintillator gamma detectors at the 20 m flight-path station EAR2 of the n_TOF facility, took advantage of the much higher neutron flux. The current status of the analysis of the data, focussed on the low-energy region, will be described here.

Abstract: The slow neutron capture process (s-process) is responsible for producing about half of the elemental abundances heavier than iron in the universe. Neutron capture cross sections on stable isotopes are a key nuclear physics input for s-process studies. The 72Ge(n, γ) Maxwellian-Averaged Cross Section (MACS) has an important influence on the production of isotopes between Ge and Zr in the weak s-process in massive stars and so far only theoretical estimations are available. An experiment was carried out at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN to measure the 72Ge(n, γ) reaction for the first time at stellar neutron energies. The capture measurement was performed using an enriched 72GeO2 sample at a flight path length of 184 m, which provided high neutron energy resolution. The prompt gamma rays produced after neutron capture were detected with a set of liquid scintillation detectors (C6D6). The neutron capture yield is derived from the counting spectra taking into account the neutron flux and the gamma-ray detection efficiency using the Pulse Height Weighting Technique. Over 70 new neutron resonances were identified, providing an improved resolved reaction cross section to calculate experimental MACS values for the first time. The experiment, data analysis and the new MACS results will be presented including their impact on stellar nucleosynthesis, which was investigated using the post-processing nucleosynthesis code mppnp for a 25 solar mass model.

Abstract: A new measurement of the 235U(n,f) fission cross section was carried out at n_TOF. Abstract: The measurement of the 235U(n,f) reaction cross section in the neutron energy region 10 MeV to 500 MeV was carried out at the CERN n_TOF facility. The experimental campaign, completed in 2018, provided precise and accurate data on the fission reaction relative to neutron-proton elastic scattering. A description and characterization of the used setup for the simultaneous measurement of fission fragments and neutron flux is reported here.

21. Significant Difference in Antimicrobial Resistance of Coagulase Negative Periprosthetic Joint Infection in Septic Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty Between Two Major Orthopedic Centers

Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance is recognized as a major public health threat. It occurs naturally; however, an excessive antibiotic use and misuse of antibiotics accelerate the process. Periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) are becoming harder to treat as the efficacy of antibiotics is becoming lower. The aim of this study was to compare the resistance of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) to antibiotics identified after revision TKAs for PJI between two major orthopedic centers.A review of all revision TKAs, undertaken between 2006 and 2018 in two orthopedic centers, was performed, including all those meeting the consensus criteria for PJI, in which CNS were identified. There were no major differences in surgical approach and tissue sampling between both centers. Thirteen commonly used antibiotics were tested at both centers.The 132 strains were analyzed for their resistance to 13 different antibiotics. Staphylococcus epidermidis was identified in 70.5% cultures, followed by Staphylococcus capitis in 8.3% cultures. The comparison of antibiotic resistance between two centers was statistically significant to penicillin (P = .001), oxacillin (P = .011), cefuroxime (P = .044), levofloxacin (P = .006), moxifloxacin (P = .008), tetracycline (P.001), rifampicin (P.001) and vancomycin (P.001). The difference of resistance of CNS was not statistically significant to fosfomycin, clindamycin, teicoplanin, erythromycin and ampicillin.The resistance of CNS to antibiotics differs significantly between two major orthopedic centers that are geographically fairly close. Monitoring of bacteriological analyses in each referral center should be continuously performed. Close monitoring is needed for more efficient antibiotic treatment of and prophylaxis against PJI.

22. 107Ag and 109Ag resonance parameters for neutron induced reactions below 1 keV

Abstract: Neutron transmission and capture measurements have been performed at the time-of-flight (TOF) facility GELINA of the EC-JRC-Geel, using metallic discs of natural silver with different thicknesses. Resonances of neutron interactions with 107Ag and 109Ag were analysed in the energy region below 1 keV applying the Reich-Moore approximation of the R-Matrix theory. Discrepancies between the experimental data and calculations based on the neutron resonance parameters recommended in the main neutron cross section libraries (JEFF, ENDF/B, JENDL) were observed. Improved resonance parameters were determined by a resonance shape analysis using the REFIT code. The resonance energy, neutron (Γn) and radiation (Γγ) width were adjusted in a simultaneous fit to transmission and capture yield spectra below 100 eV. Above 100 eV fixed average radiation widths ( Γ γ 107 =140 meV, Γ γ 109 = 130 meV) were used and the neutron width Γn was adjusted to only the capture yield data. Capture resonance integral I0 were calculated from the parameters derived in this work (I0,107 = 101.20 b, I0,109 = 1515.24 b) and compared with those calculated using the cross sections recommended in the main libraries. Discrepancies in I0 for 107Ag are mainly due to difference in the parameters of the resonances at 16.4 eV, 41.6 eV, 173.9 eV and 202.8 eV. In case of 109Ag differences are mainly due to the difference in parameters of the resonance at 5.2 eV.

23. Development of antibiotic resistance in periprosthetic joint infection after total knee arthroplasty

Abstract: Aims The management of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is challenging. The correct antibiotic management remains elusive due to differences in epidemiology and resistance between countries, and reports in the literature. Before the efficacy of surgical treatment is investigated, it is crucial to analyze the bacterial strains causing PJI, especially for patients in whom no organisms are grown. Methods A review of all revision TKAs which were undertaken between 2006 and 2018 in a tertiary referral centre was performed, including all those meeting the consensus criteria for PJI, in which organisms were identified. Using a cluster analysis, three chronological time periods were created. We then evaluated the antibiotic resistance of the identified bacteria between these three clusters and the effectiveness of our antibiotic regime. Results We identified 129 PJIs with 161 culture identified bacteria in 97 patients. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) were identified in 46.6% cultures, followed by Staphylococcus aureus in 19.8%. The overall resistance to antibiotics did not increase significantly during the study period (p = 0.454). However, CNS resistance to teicoplanin (p < 0.001), fosfomycin (p = 0.016), and tetracycline (p = 0.014) increased significantly. Vancomycin had an 84.4% overall sensitivity and 100% CNS sensitivity and was the most effective agent. Conclusion Although we were unable to show an overall increase in antibiotic resistance in organisms that cause PJI after TKA during the study period, this was not true for CNS. It is concerning that resistance of CNS to new antibiotics, but not vancomycin, has increased in a little more than a decade. Our findings suggest that referral centres should continuously monitor their bacteriological analyses, as these have significant implications for prophylactic treatment in both primary arthroplasty and revision arthroplasty for PJI. 24. Long-term results of more than 13 years after arthroscopic repair of triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) Palmer 1B tears: a comparison with short- and mid-term results

Abstract: Goal of this study was the assessment of long-term outcome of arthroscopically assisted repair of Palmer 1B/Atzei 1 triangular fibrocartilage complex tears and the comparison with short- and mid-term results.The study included nineteen patients (mean 49.2 years of age) with a mean follow-up time of 13.6 years (13.1-14.3 years). Examination parameters included disabilities of arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) questionnaire, modified Mayo Wrist Score (MMWS), Krimmer Score, determination of range of motion in comparison to the contralateral extremity. Grip and pinch grip strength measurement and pain level assessment was performed, as well.The mean MMWS after at least 13.1 years was 95.8 (85-100, SD 5.6). Mean DASH Score was 10.2 (0-55.8, SD 13.6). Mean Krimmer Score was 97.2 (85-100, SD 4.8). Grip strength reached 101% of the contralateral unaffected hand. Range of motion did not differ significantly in comparison to the healthy contralateral extremity. None of the patients suffered from major complications. Fourteen of nineteen patients regarded pain level reduction as excellent. Five patients reported a relevant pain level reduction. Sixteen of nineteen patients regarded functional outcome as excellent, the other three patients reported on a pleasing improvement of the functional outcome.Arthroscopically assisted repair of Palmer 1B/Atzei 1 triangular fibrocartilage complex tears may be an efficacious and safe surgical technique for ulnar-sided TFCC tears in the long term.

25. Neutron Capture on the s -Process Branching Point Tm171 via Time-of-Flight and Activation

Abstract: The neutron capture cross sections of several unstable nuclides acting as branching points in the s process are crucial for stellar nucleosynthesis studies. The unstable $^{171}$Tm(t$_{1/2}$=1.92 yr) is part of the branching around mass A∼170 but its neutron capture cross section as a function of the neutron energy is not known to date. In this work, following the production for the first time of more than 5 mg of $^{171}$Tm at the high-flux reactor Institut Laue-Langevin in France, a sample was produced at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. Two complementary experiments were carried out at the neutron time-of-flight facility (n_TOF) at CERN in Switzerland and at the SARAF liquid lithium target facility at Soreq Nuclear Research Center in Israel by time of flight and activation, respectively. The result of the time-of-flight experiment consists of the first ever set of resonance parameters and the corresponding average resonance parameters, allowing us to make an estimation of the Maxwellian-averaged cross sections (MACS) by extrapolation. The activation measurement provides a direct and more precise measurement of the MACS at 30 keV: 384(40) mb, with which the estimation from the n_TOF data agree at the limit of 1 standard deviation. This value is 2.6 times lower than the JEFF-3.3 and ENDF/B-VIII evaluations, 25% lower than that of the Bao et al. compilation, and 1.6 times larger than the value recommended in the KADoNiS (v1) database, based on the only previous experiment. Our result affects the nucleosynthesis at the A∼170 branching, namely, the $^{171}$Yb abundance increases in the material lost by asymptotic giant branch stars, providing a better match to the available pre-solar SiC grain measurements compared to the calculations based on the current JEFF-3.3 model-based evaluation.

Abstract: $^{99}\mathrm{Tc}$ has been the subject of several experimental programs at the JRC-Geel since the late 1990s. This work presents new transmission data measured at the GELINA facility with the time-of-flight technique, whose simultaneous analysis with past transmission experiments provided a revised set of resonance parameters up to 5 keV. An iterative analysis between the resonance and ``continuum'' energy ranges leads to average resonance parameters $[{S}_{0}=0.51(3)$, $\ensuremath{\langle}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{0}}\ensuremath{\rangle}=137(7)$ meV, ${D}_{0}=12.8(2)$ eV] and theoretical average capture cross sections consistent with those reported in the literature. At $E=30$ keV, we obtain a capture cross section of 1076(45) mb and a Maxwellian-averaged cross section (MACS) of 1016(43) mb. The agreement with the recommended MACS value of 933(47) mb remains within the quoted uncertainties. This result demonstrates the performances of transmission experiments to provide reliable theoretical capture cross sections for long-lived fission products in the energy range of interest for $s$-process nucleosynthesis calculations.

Abstract: The isotope used in this research was supplied by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science by the Isotope Program in the Office of Nuclear Physics., The neutron capture cross section of 154Gd was measured from 1 eV to 300 keV in the experimental area located 185 m from the CERN n_TOF neutron spallation source, using a metallic sample of gadolinium, enriched to 67% in 154Gd. The capture measurement, performed with four C6D6 scintillation detectors, has been complemented by a transmission measurement performed at the GELINA time-of-flight facility (JRC-Geel), thus minimising the uncertainty related to sample composition. An accurate Maxwellian averaged capture cross section (MACS) was deduced over the temperature range of interest for s process nucleosynthesis modelling. We report a value of 880(50) mb for the MACS at kT = 30 keV, significantly lower compared to values available in literature. 28. Mobile bearing leads to less proximal medial tibial strain following UKA in comparison with fixed bearing in a cadaver setup

Abstract: Aims and Objectives: Inexplicable pain to the medial proximal tibia is a frequent finding leading to revision after unicondylar knee arthroplasty (UKA). This study is an effort to find out, if there are any differences between mobile (MB) and fixed bearing (FB) UKA designs in terms of resulting strain in the medial proximal tibia as measured in an in vitro cadaver setup. It was hypothesized that MB UKA would result in lower bone strain. Materials and Methods: Five pairs of fresh-frozen full leg cadaver specimens were mounted in a kinematic rig that applied a dynamic squatting motion knee flexion after prior 3D CT. The rig allowed for 6 degrees-of-freedom at the knee while forces were applied to the quadriceps and hamstrings. During testing, an infrared camera system tracked the location of reflective markers attached to the tibia and femur with bicortical bone pins. Tibial cortical bone strain was measured with stacked strain gauge rosettes attached at predefined anterior and posterior positions on the medial cortex. Sensor outputs were recorded at 2000 Hz and synchronized with kinematic data prior and after pairwise implantation of MB and FB UKA directly comparing those between left and right knees from the same donor. Results: Bone strain values consistently increased with increasing flexion angle. FB UKA significantly increased strain in the anterior region of the medial tibial bone, while MB closely replicated strain values of the native knee. Conclusion: Proximal tibial bone strain seems to be lesser following MB UKA in comparison with FB UKA. Clinical studies will have to show, if this translates into a higher rate of pain problems with FB UKA.

Abstract: In the measurement of neutron capture cross-sections of fissile isotopes, the fission channel is a source of background which can be removed efficiently using the so-called fission-tagging or fission-veto technique. For this purpose a new compact and fast fission chamber has been developed. The design criteria and technical description of the chamber are given within the context of a measurement of the 233U(n, ��) cross-section at the n_TOF facility at CERN, where it was coupled to the n_TOF Total Absorption Calorimeter. For this measurement the fission detector was optimized for time resolution, minimization of material in the neutron beam and for alpha-fission discrimination. The performance of the fission chamber and its application as a fission tagging detector are discussed., This work was partially supported by the French NEEDS/NACRE Project and by the European Commission within HORIZON2020 via the EURATOM Project EUFRAT.

30. Long-term functional outcome after dorsal capsular imbrication for post-traumatic dorsal instability of the distal radioulnar joint

Abstract: The goal of this study was the assessment of long-term outcome of dorsal capsular imbrication of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) in dorsal instability. The study included ten patients (mean 38.7 years of age) with a mean follow-up time of 11.2 years (9.3 years to 14.3 years). Examination parameters included Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire, modified Mayo Wrist Score (MMWS), determination of range of motion in comparison with the healthy extremity, pre- and post-operative pain level assessment, and examination of DRUJ stability. Eight of ten DRUJs proved to be stable after the above-mentioned follow-up. Mean MMWS was 92.5 (65–100; SD: 11.1). Mean DASH Score was 8.8 (0–60; SD: 18.4). Grip strength reached 93.5% of the contralateral unaffected hand. Range of motion did not differ significantly in comparison with the healthy contralateral extremity. Nine of ten patients regarded pain level reduction as excellent. Eight of ten patients regarded DRUJ stability as excellent after surgery. Dorsal capsular imbrication of the DRUJ is an efficacious surgical technique for post-traumatic dorsal instability in the long-term.

31. Correlation of tibial component size and rotation with outcomes after total knee arthroplasty

Abstract: Tibial component design and positioning contribute more to patient satisfaction than previously realized. A surgeon needs to decide on the size and rotation, bearing in mind that coverage should be as high as possible, whilst malrotation and overhang should be avoided. No study investigates the impact of each of these components on clinical outcomes in a single cohort. This is a retrospective analysis of 1-year postoperative outcomes measured with the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome (KOOS) Score, as well as a previously validated rotational CT protocol. Coverage, rotation from Insall’s axis, and overhang of an asymmetric tibial baseplate were measured, and positive and negative correlations to clinical outcomes were calculated. A total of 499 knees were analyzed. Patient average age was 68.4 years. Rotation within 7° internal and 5° external from Insall’s axis was a “safe zone”. Mean coverage was 76%. A total of 429 knees (94%) had a coverage of at least 70% and 102 knees (22%) greater than 80%. Overhang was detected in 23% of the cohort. Increased coverage was correlated to increased KOOS score and overhang correlated with a decreased KOOS score (p = 0.008). This study demonstrates the individual role of three aspects of tibial component implantation properties in postoperative pain and short-term functional outcomes. Upsizing to the point of overhang with rotational tolerance of 7° internal and 3° external to Insall’s axis demonstrates best patient reported outcomes. Overhang decreases the clinical outcome by the same margin as loss of 16% of coverage.

Abstract: The idea of slow-neutron capture nucleosynthesis formulated in 1957 triggered a tremendous experimental effort in different laboratories worldwide to measure the relevant nuclear physics input quantities, namely (n, γ) cross sections over the stellar temperature range (from few eV up to several hundred keV) for most of the isotopes involved from Fe up to Bi. A brief historical review focused on total energy detectors will be presented to illustrate how advances in instrumentation have led to the assessment of new aspects of s-process nucleosynthesis and to the progressive refinement of stellar models. A summary will be presented on current efforts to develop new detection concepts, such as the Total-Energy Detector with γ-ray imaging capability (i-TED). 33. Transfusions increase complications and infections after hip and knee arthroplasty: An analysis of 2760 cases

Abstract: BACKGROUND Knee and hip replacement surgery are still the mainstay therapy for osteoarthritis. In spite of the improvement of techniques and implants, anemia is a relatively common complication, with transfusion rates of up to 23% in some centers. OBJECTIVE The purpose of the study was to determine a correlation of transfusions to complications including infection since this topic is still being debated or even disputed in the literature. METHODS This is a level III, single center retrospective observational cohort study of 2760 unilateral primary knee and hip replacements. Preoperative assessment, the number of transfusions and the occurrence of complications were collected and the correlations were analyzed using analysis of variance and logistic regression. RESULTS Fifteen percent of all patients developed at least one complication. Transfusion rate was 9%. Risk factors for receiving a transfusion were female gender, hip replacement, American Society of Anesthesiologists' Score (ASA) > III, history of myocardial infarction, chronic cardiac disease, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and length of surgery. The risk factors for developing a complication were: ASA score, presence of chronic renal insufficiency, and transfusion during hospital stay. Transfusion increases the risk of complications and infection rate. Complication rate with transfusion was 34.7% and without transfusion 13.2%. Infection rate without transfusion was 0.4% and with transfusion 2.82%. CONCLUSIONS The complication rate is higher in transfused patients. The number of complications rises linearly with the number of transfusions. Infection rate is also higher after a transfusion. Efforts should be made to reduce the transfusion rate.

Abstract: Combining continuous femoral nerve blockade with single injection sciatic nerve blockade is standard peripheral nerve block practice for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) during the first 24 postoperative hours.To assess the analgesic benefits and mobilisation capability of continuous sciatic blockade in conjunction with continuous femoral nerve blockade for 72 h after arthroplasty.Randomised, triple-blinded controlled trial.Single-Centre, German University Hospital.In total, 50 patients receiving continuous femoral nerve blockade (5 ml h ropivacaine 0.2%) for TKA under general anaesthesia.Patients were randomised to receive a sciatic nerve catheter with an initial dose of 10 ml ropivacaine 0.2% followed by either continuous double-blinded application of 5 ml h ropivacaine 0.2% (CO) or 5 ml h saline infusion (SIN).Measures primary endpoint: cumulative morphine consumption until 48 h postoperatively. Further endpoints included morphine consumption, pain scores, mobilisation, dynamometry until postoperative day 3.Median [25th to 75th percentiles] cumulative morphine consumption at postoperative day 2 differed significantly between groups (CO 15 mg [11 to 25] versus SIN, 43 mg [27 to 67.5, P 0.0001) in the 48 patients in the final analysis. Overall pain scores were comparable at rest and during stress at each time point. However, significantly higher pain scores of the popliteal fossa were observed in the SIN group. Mobilisation was comparable between groups.This trial demonstrates the superior analgesic effects of continuous sciatic nerve block compared with a single injection in combination with continuous femoral blockade during the first 72 h after TKA. However, mobilisation capability was impaired in both groups. Abstract: BACKGROUND There is a clear tendency towards cementless acetabular components in primary total hip arthroplasty. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess the long-term clinical and radiological outcome of titanium cementless acetabular cups when combined with a highly crosslinked polyethylene liner. METHODS This study is a retrospective follow-up of 67 cups in 64 patients. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the Harris Hip Score. Radiolucent lines, osteolysis and loosening were assessed radiologically. Implant survival was determined using the Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS The average Harris Hip Score at follow-up was 80.3 ± 14.5. Signs of osteolysis were observed in 7.1% of the radiographs. No aseptic loosening of the cup was reported. Survival of the cup with aseptic loosening as an endpoint was 100%. A comparison with 19 other studies using the same material combination demonstrated very similar results. All manufacturers with available studies have at least one report of 100% survivorship at 10-year follow-up for their titanium cup and highly crosslinked polyethylene acetabular component combination with aseptic loosening as an endpoint. CONCLUSIONS The data suggests that the rate of aseptic loosening of a titanium cup combined with a highly-crosslinked polyethylene liner at 10-year follow-up could be as low as 0%.

Abstract: In this study, the total blood loss, transfusion rate and number of transfused blood units in patients with different indications for shoulder arthroplasty: primary, fracture and secondary were compared. Risk factors for bleeding and transfusion were analysed.Medical records and the database of the institution's blood bank from 527 patients that received shoulder arthroplasty were analysed retrospectively. This study included 419 patients that were divided in three different groups: primary (n = 278), fracture (n = 110) and secondary (following prior osteosynthesis; n = 31) shoulder arthroplasty. The demographic and clinical data were collected. The total blood loss (TBL) was calculated and transfusions recorded.The transfusion rate and mean amount of transfused blood units (BU) were higher in fracture (32.7% and 0.69BU, p 0.01) and secondary arthroplasty (35.5% and 0.97BU, p 0.01) than in primary arthroplasty (12.6% and 0.28BU). The overall transfusion rate was 19.6% at a mean TBL of 370 ml. However, patients with primary arthroplasty experienced significantly higher total blood loss than those after fracture arthroplasty (p 0.01). Longer surgery time and male sex are significant risk factors for elevated blood loss. The pre-operative use of vitamin K antagonist, cemented arthroplasty, high BMI, coronary heart disease and ASA score 2 are relevant risk factors for blood transfusion.The most important susceptible factor that affects the TBL is the surgery time. Transfusion rates are higher in patients with fracture arthroplasty than after primary arthroplasty.

Abstract: Thin 33S samples for the study of the 33S(n, α)30Si cross-section at the n_TOF facility at CERN were made by thermal evaporation of 33S powder onto a dedicated substrate made of kapton covered with thin layers of copper, chromium and titanium. This method has provided for the first time bare sulfur samples a few centimeters in diameter. The samples have shown an excellent adherence with no mass loss after few years and no sublimation in vacuum at room temperature. The determination of the mass thickness of 33S has been performed by means of Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. The samples have been successfully tested under neutron irradiation.

Abstract: MPFL reconstruction is widely and successfully used for treating patella instability, either as a standalone procedure or in combination. Although different techniques allow for MPFL reconstruction, the use of a free tendon graft is one of the most commonly used. The phenomenon of tunnel widening or tunnel enlargement is well described in ACL reconstruction, but so far only little effort has been put into evaluating this phenomenon after MPFL reconstruction. Patients who received an MPFL reconstruction with a free gracilis tendon graft were identified by review of patient files. Additional clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging were performed to assess tunnel enlargement and clinical outcome. Fifty-one knees of 49 patients (34 female, 17 male) with a mean follow-up of 3.0 ± 1.4 years were included in this study. Mean age at the time of surgery was 22.6 ± 8.5 years. Mean Tegner score decreased from preoperative 5.3 ± 2.0 to 4.0 ± 1.4 postoperative. Postoperative IKDC and Kujala scores were 74 ± 16 and 80 ± 15, respectively. Twenty-three patients showed a tunnel enlargement at follow-up examination. Of these 23 patients, 20 showed a tunnel that was positioned too proximal, whereas only 13 of the 28 patients showing no enlargement had a tunnel that was positioned too proximal (p = 0.0033). Interestingly, patients showing a tunnel enlargement at follow-up examination also showed significantly better Kujala (84 ± 12 vs. 75 ± 16; p = 0.03) and IKDC scores (80 ± 7 vs. 70 ± 19; p = 0.02) when compared to the non-enlarged group. Tunnel enlargement after MPFL reconstruction with a free gracilis tendon graft seems to be connected to mechanical overload due to a proximal malposition of the femoral tunnel. Interestingly, this did not influence clinical outcome as patients with tunnel enlargement showed better Kujala and IKDC scores.

Abstract: Femoral component malrotation in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is clinically proven to cause dissatisfaction and impaired function. This study is an attempt to characterize the tibiofemoral kinematics following femoral malrotation in posterior stabilized (PS) TKA. It was hypothesized that internal malrotation would introduce the most pronounced changes. Six fresh-frozen cadaver specimens were mounted in a kinematic rig. Three motion patterns were applied with the native knee and following PS TKA (passive motion, open chain extension, and squatting) while infrared cameras recorded the trajectories of markers attached to femur and tibia. Abstract: Fixed-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) closely replicates native knee kinematics. As few studies have assessed kinematics following mobile-bearing (MB) UKA, the current study aimed to investigate whether MB UKA preserves natural knee kinematics. Seven fresh-frozen full-leg cadaver specimens were prepared and mounted in a kinematic rig that allowed all degrees of freedom at the knee. Three motion patterns, passive flexion–extension (0°–110° flexion), open-chain extension (5°–70° flexion) and squatting (30°–100° flexion), were performed pre- and post-implantation of a medial MB UKA and compared in terms of rotational and translational knee joint kinematics in the different anatomical planes, respectively. In terms of frontal plane rotational kinematics, MB UKA specimens were in a more valgus orientation for all motion patterns. In the axial plane, internal rotation of the tibia before and after UKA was consistent, regardless of motion task, with no significant differences. In terms of frontal plane, i.e., inferior–superior, translations, the FMCC was significantly higher in UKA knees in all flexion angles and motor tasks, except in early flexion during passive motion. In terms of axial plane, i.e., anteroposterior (AP), translations, during open-chain activities, the femoral medial condyle center (FMCC) tended to be more posterior following UKA relative to the native knee in mid-flexion and above. AP excursions of the FMCC were small in all tested motions, however. There was substantial AP translation of the femoral lateral condyle center during passive motion before and after UKA, which was significantly different for flexion angles > 38°. Our study data demonstrate that the kinematics of the unloaded knee following MB UKA closely resemble those of the native knee while relative medial overstuffing with UKA will result in the joint being more valgus. However, replacing the conforming and rigidly fixed medial meniscus with a mobile inlay may successfully prevent aberrant posterior translation of the medial femoral compartment during passive motion and squatting motion.

Abstract: Aims We sought to establish whether an oxidised zirconium (OxZr) femoral component causes less loss of polyethylene volume than a cobalt alloy (CoCr) femoral component in total knee arthroplasty. Materials and Methods A total of 20 retrieved tibial inserts that had articulated with OxZr components were matched with 20 inserts from CoCr articulations for patient age, body mass index, length of implantation, and revision diagnosis. Changes in dimensions of the articular surfaces were compared with those of pristine inserts using laser scanning. The differences in volume between the retrieved and pristine surfaces of the two groups were calculated and compared. Results The loss of polyethylene volume was 122 mm3 (standard deviation (sd) 87) in the OxZr group and 170 mm3 (sd 96) in the CoCr group (p = 0.033). The volume loss in the OxZr group was also lower in the medial (72 mm3 (sd 67) versus 92 mm3 (sd 60); p = 0.096) and lateral (49 mm3 (sd 36) versus 79 mm3 (sd 61); p = 0.096) compartments separately, but these differences were not significant. Conclusion Our results corroborate earlier findings from in vitro testing and visual retrieval analysis which suggest that polyethylene volume loss is lower with OxZr femoral components. Since both OxZr and CoCr are hard surfaces that would be expected to create comparable amounts of polyethylene creep, the differences in volume loss may reflect differences in the in vivo wear of these inserts. Abstract: The recently reintroduced bicruciate-retaining Total Knee Arthroplasty (BCR TKA) is an interesting approach in the quest for close replication of knee joint biomechanics and kinematics closer to the native knee. Therefore, this study aimed at providing a detailed biomechanical view on the functional resemblance of BCR TKA to the native knee joint. Seven fresh-frozen full leg cadaver specimens (76 ± 10 year) were mounted in a 6 degrees-of-freedom kinematic rig that applied a dynamic squatting motion knee flexion. Two motion patterns were performed pre- and post-implantation of a fixed bearing BCR TKA: passive flexion–extension and squatting while an infrared camera system tracked the location of reflective markers attached to the tibia and femur. Additionally, specimen laxity was assessed using Lachman tests and varus/valgus stress tests in triplicate. Overall, differences in tibiofemoral kinematics between native knee and BCR TKA were small. Some minor differences appeared under the load of a squat: less internal tibial rotation and some minor paradoxical anterior translation of the medial femoral condyle during mid-flexion. BCR TKA may slightly elevate the joint line. Knee laxity as measured by the Lachman and varus/valgus tests was not significantly influenced by BCR TKA implantation. As both cruciate ligaments are preserved with BCR TKA the unloaded knee closely resembles native knee kinematics including preserving the rollback mechanism. The loss of the conforming anatomy of menisci and tibial cartilage and replacement via a relatively flat polyethylene inlay may account for the loss of tibial internal rotation and the slight paradoxical AP motion of the medial femoral condyle with BCR TKA. This phenomenon reproduces findings made earlier with fixed bearing unicondylar knee arthroplasty.

Abstract: Neutron capture data on intermediate mass nuclei are of key importance to nucleosynthesis in the weak component of the slow neutron capture processes, which occurs in massive stars. The $(n,\gamma)$ cross section on $^{70}Ge$, which is mainly produced in the s process, was measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Resonance capture kernels were determined up to 40 keV neutron energy and average cross sections up to 300 keV. Stellar cross sections were calculated from $kT=5 keV$ to $kT=100 keV$ and are in very good agreement with a previous measurement by Walter and Beer (1985) and recent evaluations. Average cross sections are in agreement with Walter and Beer (1985) over most of the neutron energy range covered, while they are systematically smaller for neutron energies above 150 keV. We have calculated isotopic abundances produced in s-process environments in a 25 solar mass star for two initial metallicities (below solar and close to solar). While the low metallicity model reproduces best the solar system germanium isotopic abundances, the close to solar model shows a good global match to solar system abundances in the range of mass numbers A=60–80.

Abstract: Radiative neutron capture cross section measurements are of fundamental importance for the study of the slow neutron capture (s-) process of nucleosynthesis. This mechanism is responsible for the formation of most elements heavier than iron in the Universe. Particularly relevant are branching nuclei along the s-process path, which are sensitive to the physical conditions of the stellar environment. One such example is the branching at 79Se (3.27 × 105 y), which shows a thermally dependent β-decay rate. However, an astrophysically consistent interpretation requires also the knowledge of the closest neighbour isotopes involved. In particular, the 80Se(n,γ) cross section directly affects the stellar yield of the “cold” branch leading to the formation of the s-only 82Kr. Experimentally, there exists only one previous measurement on 80Se using the time of flight (TOF) technique. However, the latter suffers from some limitations that are described in this presentation. These drawbacks have been significantly improved in a recent measurement at CERN n TOF. This contribution presents a summary of the latter measurement and the status of the data analysis.

Abstract: Impingement of the prominent anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS) against the femoral neck has recently been described as another type of impingement. The purpose of this study is to provide a distribution of AIIS types using the classification proposed by Hetsroni and thus report on the prevalence of prominent types. A total of 400 patients were included in the study with an average age 27.3 ± 6.9 years (range 18–40). All patients received a whole-body polytrauma computer tomography (CT) scan in the emergency room (ER) upon arrival. The classification of AIIS proposed by Hetsroni et al., which describes three morphological types, was used. Type II and III were grouped as prominent types. The measurements were performed in all three planes by two examiners. Male to female ratio was 71:29. Type I was observed in 367 (91.7%) patients. Type II was observed in 31 (7.8%) patients and type III was observed in 2 (0.5%) patients, unilaterally. Prominent types were much more prevalent in men (10.5%) than in women (2.6%). The CT assessment demonstrated excellent intra- and interreliability (overall: 0.926, I/II: 0.906, III: 1.000). A young population demonstrates a prevalence of a prominent AIIS of 11.5%. Prominent AIIS is more common in men than in women.

Abstract: Background Elevated serum levels of chromium and cobalt ions in metal-on-metal (MoM) bearing surfaces is a well-known phenomenon in THA. However, few studies have addressed this issue in complex primary and revision knee arthroplasty using a MoM hinged mechanism, and no study, to our knowledge, has investigated knees with MoM hinges in patients without megaprostheses (tumor prostheses). Questions/purposes We analyzed a series of patients who received MoM hinged revision knee prostheses and asked: (1) What are the serum metal ion levels at short-term followup? (2) Is there any correlation between metal ion levels and the Knee Society Score (KSS) at this followup? Methods Between 2013 and 2017, we performed 198 revision knee arthroplasties, of which 32 (17.7%) were performed with a latest-generation MoM hinge knee design. In addition, three complex primary TKAs utilizing the same design were included in this study. The device features a metal-on-polyethylene bearing with a MoM hinge. During that period, our general indications for using a hinge were single-stage and two-stage revision surgeries, revisions with large bone defects, and primary TKA with > 20° mechanical malalignment or collateral ligament insufficiency. Of the 35 patients who received this device, 23 patients (65% of the overall group who received this implant; 11 males, 12 females) were available for followup at a median of 28 months (range, 13-61 months), and the remaining 12 (35%) patients were lost to followup. Our rationale for reporting before the more typical 2-year minimum was the finding of elevated serum ion levels with unclear clinical significance. Median age at the time of surgery was 68 years (range, 52-84 years). None of the patients included in the study had other implants with MoM bearings. Serum ion levels of chromium (III) and cobalt were assessed using mass spectrometry. Ion levels > 5 ppb were considered elevated. Clinical outcome was assessed using the original KSS. Results Median chromium serum level was 6.3 ppb (range, 0.6-31.9 ppb) and median cobalt serum level was 10.5 (range, 1.0-47.5 ppb). Of the 23 patients, 16 had elevated serum ion levels. There was a moderate correlation between KSS and both chromium (p = 0.029, r = 0.445) and cobalt (p = 0.012, r = 0.502) levels. Conclusions Elevated metal ion levels and radiolucent lines are common after surgery with this MoM hinge design at short-term followup, and we believe this finding is of great concern. Although no patient has yet been revised, these patients will be closely monitored. We recommend that serum ion analysis become a routine part of followup after any hinge TKA in an attempt to better understand the potential consequences of this phenomenon. Abstract: 73Ge(n, γ) cross sections were measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN up to neutron energies of 300keV, providing for the first time experimental data above 8keV. Results indicate that the stellar cross section at kT=30keV is 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than most theoretical predictions. There are only two previous 244Cm and 246Cm capture cross section measurements: one in 1969 using a nuclear explosion and the most recent data measured at J-PARC in 2010. The data for both isotopes are very scarce due to the difficulties in performing the measurements: high intrinsic activity of the samples and limited facilities capable of providing isotopically enriched samples. We have measured both neutron capture cross sections at the n_TOF Experimental Area 2 (EAR-2) with three C6D6 detectors and also at Area 1 (EAR-1) with the TAC. Preliminary results assessing the quality and limitations (background subtraction, measurement technique and counting statistics) of this new experimental datasets are presented and discussed. 50. Blood loss after revision knee arthroplasty is 1.38- to 2.17-fold higher than after primary knee arthroplasty: A retrospective analysis of 898 cases

Abstract: Background There are a number of factors that influence blood loss during and after primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and revision TKA (rTKA). The purpose of this study was to provide a factorial assessment that would aid surgeons in managing expected blood loss in rTKA, when compared to TKA. The first question asked was the blood loss and transfusions between TKA and rTKA and the second question was risk factors for blood loss after rTKA. Hypothesis Blood loss in any rTKA is higher than in TKA by a factor of 2. Patients and methods A retrospective single-centre consecutive series of rTKA between 2006 and 2018 was performed. Based on the rTKA types identified in joint registries, 4 rTKA cohorts were created: aseptic minor rTKA, aseptic major rTKA, 1st stage, and 2nd stage septic rTKA. A consecutive TKA cohort from the same study period was used to create a propensity score matched cohort with the aseptic major rTKA cohort. Result A total of 622 rTKA were identified. Aseptic major rTKA had double the median blood loss than TKA. The lowest blood loss was observed in the TKA group followed by aseptic minor rTKA, and the highest in 2nd stage septic rTKA. The median total blood loss was higher in all rTKA by a factor ranging between 1.38 and 2.17. Higher age, female gender, lower preoperative hemoglobin, chronic heart disease and history of myocardial infarction were risk factors for increased blood loss. The type of rTKA performed was not predictive of blood loss in the linear regression analysis. Discussion Blood loss after rTKA is 1.38 to 2.17-fold higher than after TKA. The blood loss observed in 2nd stage septic rTKA and aseptic major rTKA was the highest. Older female patients, with a low preoperative hemoglobin, were identified to be at the highest risk of blood loss after rTKA. Strategies for further blood loss reductions need to be utilised to the fullest extent for these procedures. Level of evidence III; retrospective prognostic study.
