${\mathrm{Cs}}_{x}{\mathrm{K}}_{y}\mathrm{Sb}$ photocathodes grown on GaAs and molybdenum substrates were evaluated using a $\ensuremath{-}300\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{kV}$ dc high voltage photogun and diagnostic beam line. Photocathodes grown on GaAs substrates, with varying antimony layer thickness (estimated range from $l20\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{nm}$ to $g1\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{um}$), yielded similar thermal emittance per rms laser spot size values ($\ensuremath{\sim}0.4\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{mm}\text{ }\mathrm{mrad}/\mathrm{mm}$) but very different operating lifetime. Similar thermal emittance was obtained for a photocathode grown on a molybdenum substrate but with markedly improved lifetime. For this photocathode, no decay in quantum efficiency was measured at 4.5 mA average current and with peak current 0.55 A at the photocathode.

GaAs-based DC high voltage photo-guns used at accelerators with extensive user programs must exhibit long photocathode operating lifetime. Achieving this goal represents a significant challenge for proposed high average current facilities that must operate at tens of milliamperes or more. Specifically, the operating lifetime is dominated by ion back-bombardment of the photocathode from ionized residual gas. While numerous experiments have been performed to characterize the operating lifetime under various conditions, detailed simulations of the ion back-bombardment mechanism that explains these experiments are lacking. Recently, a new user routine was implemented using the code General Particle Tracer (GPT) to simulate electron impact ionization of residual beam line gas and simultaneously track the incident electron, the ejected electron, and the newly formed ion. This new routine was benchmarked against analytical calculations and then applied to experiments performed at the CEBAF injector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility to study the effectiveness of limiting ions from entering the cathode-anode gap using a positively biased anode. These simulations were performed using detailed 3D field maps produced with CST Microwave Studio describing the photo-gun electrostatics. Discussion of the experiment and the application of this new GPT routine to model the experiments will be presented at the workshop.

We report on the design and performance of a Mott polarimeter optimized for a nominal 5-MeV electron beam from the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) injector. The rf time structure of this beam allows the use of time of flight in the scattered electron detection, making it possible to cleanly isolate those detected electrons that originate from the scattering foil, and resulting in measured scattering asymmetries which are exceptionally stable over a broad range of beam conditions, beam currents, and foil thicknesses. In two separate series of measurements from two different photocathode electron sources, we have measured the Mott scattering asymmetries produced by an approximately 86% transversely polarized electron beam incident on ten gold foils with nominal thicknesses between 50 and 1000 nm. The statistical uncertainty of the measured asymmetry from each foil is below 0.25%. Within this statistical precision, the measured asymmetry was unaffected by \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1-mm shifts in the beam position on the target foil, and by beam current changes and dead-time effects over a wide range of beam currents. The overall uncertainty of our beam polarization measurement, arising from the uncertainty in the value of the scattering asymmetry at zero foil thickness as determined from our fits to the measured asymmetries versus scattering foil thicknesses, the estimated systematic effects, and the (dominant) uncertainty from the calculation of the theoretical Sherman function, is 0.61%. A simulation of the polarimeter using geant4 has confirmed that double scattering in the target foil is the sole source of the dependence of the measured asymmetry on foil thickness, and gives a result for the asymmetry versus foil thickness in good agreement with both our measurements and a simple calculation. Future measurements at different beam energies and with target foils of different atomic numbers will seek to bound uncertainties from small effects such as radiative corrections to the calculation of the polarimeter analyzing power. A simultaneous high-precision measurement of the beam polarization with a different polarimeter, AESOP (Accurate Electron Spin Optical Polarimeter), under development at the University of Nebraska, clearly possible at the CEBAF accelerator, will allow a high-precision comparison of our measured asymmetries with theoretical calculations of the Mott analyzing power. Finally, the improved precision of the current Mott polarimeter along with similar improvements to other Jefferson Lab polarimeters warrants another precision comparison of all of these polarimeters when measuring a beam of the same polarization.

This contribution describes the latest milestones of a multiyear program to build and operate a compact $\ensuremath{-}300\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{kV}$ dc high voltage photogun with inverted insulator geometry and alkali-antimonide photocathodes. Photocathode thermal emittance measurements and quantum efficiency charge lifetime measurements at average current up to 4.5 mA are presented, as well as an innovative implementation of ion generation and tracking simulations to explain the benefits of a biased anode to repel beam line ions from the anode-cathode gap, to dramatically improve the operating lifetime of the photogun and eliminate the occurrence of micro-arc discharges.

Jefferson Lab is constructing a 350 kV direct current high voltage photoemission gun employing a compact inverted-geometry insulator. This photogun will produce polarized electron beams at an injector test facility intended for low energy nuclear physics experiments, and to assist the development of new technology for the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility. A photogun operating at 350kV bias voltage reduces the complexity of the injector design, by eliminating the need for a graded-beta radio frequency �capture� section employed to boost lower voltage beams to relativistic speed. However, reliable photogun operation at 350 kV necessitates solving serious high voltage problems related to breakdown and field emission. This study focuses on developing effective methods to avoid breakdown at the interface between the insulator and the commercial high voltage cable that connects the photogun to the high voltage power supply. Three types of inverted insulators were tested, in combination with two electrode configurations. Our results indicate that tailoring the conductivity of the insulator material, and/or adding a cathode triple-junction screening electrode, effectively serves to increase the hold-off voltage from 300kV to more than 375kV. Electrostatic field maps suggest these configurations serve to produce a more uniform potential gradient across the insulator.

Extending the charge lifetime of today’s spin polarized GaAs photoelectron guns from tens to thousands of Coulombs is a requirement for long-duration operation at milliampere beam current. There are two main approaches frequently considered to achieve this goal. The first is improving photo-gun vacuum, which provides a direct means to minimize the ill effects of ion bombardment and associated QE decay. In this contribution, we demonstrate the second: enhancing the charge lifetime at milliampere beam current by using large laser spots which serves to distribute ion damage over a larger region of the photocathode. The efficacy of this approach was presented at past workshops, but using bulk GaAs and green laser light without RF structure. In this contribution, highly polarized beam was produced from strained-superlattice GaAs/GaAsP photocathodes inside the 130 kV photo-gun at the CEBAF photoinjector, at beam currents from 0.5 to 1.5 mA and with a clear indication of lifetime enhancement using laser beams as large as ~8 mm$^2$. However, when the laser beam size was increased beyond this diameter, further lifetime enhancement was not observed which highlights the importance of proper cathode/anode design to maintain loss-free beam delivery and the preservation of static vacuum conditions. In addition, this contribution presents electron beam polarization measurements at currents to 1 mA.

The ion beams of the proposed Jefferson Lab Electron Ion Collider (JLEIC) must be cooled to achieve the required collision luminosity. In general, cooling is accomplished when an electron beam co-propagates with an ion beam moving at the same average velocity, but with different temperature, where the energy of chaotic motion of the ion beam is transferred to the cold electron beam. The cooling rate can be improved by about two orders of magnitude if the process occurs inside a solenoidal magnetic field – so-called magnetized cooling - that forces the electrons to follow small helical trajectories thereby increasing the interaction time with ions and improving the cooling efficiency. However, one of the challenges associated with implementing this cooling technique relates to the fringe field of the cooling solenoid which imparts a large unwanted azimuthal kick onto the electron beam that prevents the electron beam from traveling in the desired tight, well-defined volume within the solenoid. As proposed by Derbenev, the ill-effect of this fringe field can be cancelled if the electron beam is born in a similar field and encountering a fringe field upon exiting the electron gun that produces an azimuthal kick in the opposite direction, such that the two kicks cancel. Besides requiring magnetized beam, the JLEIC re-circulator cooler design requires an electron beam with very high average current and high bunch charge: 140 mA and with nanoCoulomb bunch charge. This contribution describes the latest milestones of a multiyear program to build a magnetized electron beam source based on a 350 kV DC high voltage photogun with inverted insulator geometry.

Gas conditioning was shown to eliminate field emission from cathode electrodes used inside DC high voltage photoelectron guns, thus providing a reliable means to operate photoguns at higher voltages and field strengths. Measurements and simulation results indicate that gas conditioning eliminates field emission from cathode electrodes via two mechanisms: sputtering and implantation, with the benefits of implantation reversed by heating the electrode. We have studied five stainless steel electrodes (304L and 316LN) that were polished to approximately 20 nm surface roughness using diamond grit, and evaluated inside a high voltage apparatus to determine the onset of field emission as a function of voltage and field strength. The field emission characteristics of each electrode varied significantly upon the initial application of voltage but improved to nearly the same level after gas conditioning using either helium or krypton, exhibiting less than 10 pA field emission at −225 kV bias voltage with a 50 mm cathode/anode gap, corresponding to a field strength of ~13 MV/m. Field emission could be reduced with either gas, but there were conditions related to gas choice, voltage and field strength that were more favorable than others.

Two-photon absorption of 1560 nm light was used to generate polarized electron beams from unstrained GaAs photocathodes of varying thickness: 625 μm, 0.32 μm, and 0.18 μm. For each photocathode, the degree of spin polarization of the photoemitted beam was less than 50%, contradicting earlier predictions based on simple quantum mechanical selection rules for spherically-symmetric systems but consistent with the more sophisticated model of Bhat et al. (Phys. Rev. B 71 (2005) 035209). Polarization via two-photon absorption was the highest from the thinnest photocathode sample and comparable to that obtained via one-photon absorption (using 778 nm light), with values 40.3±1.0% and 42.6±1.0%, respectively.

The Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons experiment at the injector of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility has demonstrated for the first time the efficient transfer of polarization from electrons to positrons produced by the polarized bremsstrahlung radiation induced by a polarized electron beam in a high-$Z$ target. Positron polarization up to 82\% have been measured for an initial electron beam momentum of 8.19~MeV/$c$, limited only by the electron beam polarization. This technique extends polarized positron capabilities from GeV to MeV electron beams, and opens access to polarized positron beam physics to a wide community., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

A vacuum system with pressure in the low ultra-high vacuum (UHV) range is essential for long photocathode lifetimes in DC high voltage GaAs photoguns. A discrepancy between predicted and measured base pressure in the CEBAF photoguns motivated this study of outgassing rates of three 304 stainless steel chambers with different pretreatments and pump speed measurements of non-evaporable getter (NEG) pumps. Outgassing rates were measured using two independent techniques. Lower outgassing rates were achieved by electropolishing and vacuum firing the chamber. The second part of the paper describes NEG pump speed measurements as a function of pressure through the lower part of the UHV range. Measured NEG pump speed is high at pressures above 5×10−11 Torr, but may decrease at lower pressures depending on the interpretation of the data. The final section investigates the pump speed of a locally produced NEG coating applied to the vacuum chamber walls. These studies represent the first detailed vacuum measurements of CEBAF photogun vacuum chambers.

The Jefferson Lab Q weak experiment determined the weak charge of the proton by measuring the parity-violating elastic scattering asymmetry of longitudinally polarized electrons from an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target at small momentum transfer. A custom apparatus was designed for this experiment to meet the technical challenges presented by the smallest and most precise e → p asymmetry ever measured. Technical milestones were achieved at Jefferson Lab in target power, beam current, beam helicity reversal rate, polarimetry, detected rates, and control of helicity-correlated beam properties. The experiment employed 180 μA of 89% longitudinally polarized electrons whose helicity was reversed 960 times per second. The electrons were accelerated to 1.16 GeV and directed to a beamline with extensive instrumentation to measure helicity-correlated beam properties that can induce false asymmetries. Moller and Compton polarimetry were used to measure the electron beam polarization to better than 1%. The electron beam was incident on a 34.4 cm liquid hydrogen target. After passing through a triple collimator system, scattered electrons between 5.8° and 11.6° were bent in the toroidal magnetic field of a resistive copper-coil magnet. The electrons inside this acceptance were focused onto eight fused silica Cherenkov detectors arrayed symmetrically around the beam axis. A total scattered electron rate of about 7 GHz was incident on the detector array. The detectors were read out in integrating mode by custom-built low-noise pre-amplifiers and 18-bit sampling ADC modules. The momentum transfer Q 2 =0.025 GeV 2 was determined using dedicated low-current ( ~ 100 pA ) measurements with a set of drift chambers before (and a set of drift chambers and trigger scintillation counters after) the toroidal magnet.

We report the most precise measurement to date of a parity-violating asymmetry in elastic electron–proton scattering. The measurement was carried out with a beam energy of 3.03 GeV and a scattering angle 〈 θ lab 〉 = 6.0 ○ , with the result A PV = ( − 1.14 ± 0.24 ( stat ) ± 0.06 ( syst ) ) × 10 −6 . From this we extract, at Q 2 = 0.099 GeV 2 , the strange form factor combination G E s + 0.080 G M s = 0.030 ± 0.025 ( stat ) ± 0.006 ( syst ) ± 0.012 ( FF ) where the first two errors are experimental and the last error is due to the uncertainty in the neutron electromagnetic form factor. This result significantly improves current knowledge of G E s and G M s at Q 2 ∼ 0.1 GeV 2 . A consistent picture emerges when several measurements at about the same Q 2 value are combined: G E s is consistent with zero while positive values are favored for G M s , though G E s = G M s = 0 is compatible with the data at 95% C.L.

A total of 153 elasmobranchs (46 species), either freshly collected from the Gulf of Mexico, USA and Tasmania, Australia or museum specimens collected from various localities worldwide, were examined for calicotyline (Monocotylidae) monogeneans. Thirty-five elasmobranchs, representing 17 species, were infected with Calicotyle spp. which we identified as the following previously described species: C. asterii (Szidat, 1970) Timofeeva, 1985, C. kroyeri Diesing, 1850, C. macrocotyle Cordero, 1944, C. similis (Szidat, 1972) Timofeeva, 1985, C. splendens (Szidat, 1970) Timofeeva, 1985, C. stossichi Braun, 1899 and C. urolophi Chisholm, Beverley-Burton & Last, 1991. The Calicotylinae, which comprises the genera Calicotyle and Dictyocotyle, is revised based on supplementary material as well as deposited type-material. We consider 14 of the 17 nominal Calicotyle spp. to be valid. C. rosinae Kusnetzova, 1970 is synonymised with C. macrocotyle, C. sjegi Kusnetzova, 1970 is considered a species inquirenda and C. inermis Woolcock, 1936 a species incertae sedis. Additional data and illustrations to show the morphological features of the hamuli and male copulatory organ, the form of the intestinal caeca, vaginae and ovary and the distribution of the vitellarium are provided for all valid species. The distribution of the 14 hooklets in the adult haptor of Dictyocotyle coeliaca Nybelin, 1941 is illustrated for the first time. We provide new host and locality records for C. asterii, C. kroyeri, C. macrocotyle and C. stossichi and new locality records for C. similis and C. splendens. A key to species of the Calicotylinae is also included. Host-specificity, geographical distribution and the need for information regarding the development of individuals from juvenile to adult are discussed.

Two ${\mathrm{K}}_{2}\mathrm{CsSb}$ photocathodes were manufactured at Brookhaven National Lab and delivered to Jefferson Lab within a compact vacuum apparatus at pressure $\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}11}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{Torr}$. These photocathodes were evaluated using a dc high voltage photogun biased at voltages up to 200 kV, and illuminated with laser light at wavelengths 440 or 532 nm, to generate dc electron beams at currents up to 20 mA. Some conditions produced exceptionally large photocathode charge lifetimes, without measurable quantum efficiency decay, even from the center of the photocathode where operation using GaAs photocathodes is precluded due to ion bombardment. Under other conditions the charge lifetime was poor due to extensive ion bombardment under severely degraded vacuum conditions, and as a result of localized heating via the laser beam. Following beam delivery, the photocathodes were evaluated using a scanning electron microscope to determine surface morphology.

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry $A_n$ in the elastic scattering of 1-3 GeV transversely polarized electrons from $^1$H and for the first time from $^4$He, $^{12}$C, and $^{208}$Pb. For $^1$H, $^4$He and $^{12}$C, the measurements are in agreement with calculations that relate $A_n$ to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange amplitude including inelastic intermediate states. Surprisingly, the $^{208}$Pb result is significantly smaller than the corresponding prediction using the same formalism. These results suggest that a systematic set of new $A_n$ measurements might emerge as a new and sensitive probe of the structure of heavy nuclei., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by PRL. v3: fixed one author name and affiliation, otherwise no change

The field emission characteristics of niobium electrodes were compared to those of stainless steel electrodes using a DC high voltage field emission test apparatus. A total of eight electrodes were evaluated: two 304 stainless steel electrodes polished to mirror-like finish with diamond grit and six niobium electrodes (two single-crystal, two large-grain, and two fine-grain) that were chemically polished using a buffered-chemical acid solution. Upon the first application of high voltage, the best large-grain and single-crystal niobium electrodes performed better than the best stainless steel electrodes, exhibiting less field emission at comparable voltage and field strength. In all cases, field emission from electrodes (stainless steel and/or niobium) could be significantly reduced and sometimes completely eliminated, by introducing krypton gas into the vacuum chamber while the electrode was biased at high voltage. Of all the electrodes tested, a large-grain niobium electrode performed the best, exhibiting no measurable field emission (< 10 pA) at 225 kV with 20 mm cathode/anode gap, corresponding to a field strength of 18:7 MV/m.

The parity-violating (PV) asymmetry of inclusive π- production in electron scattering from a liquid deuterium target was measured at backward angles. The measurement was conducted as a part of the G0 experiment, at a beam energy of 360 MeV. The physics process dominating pion production for these kinematics is quasifree photoproduction off the neutron via the Δ^0 resonance. In the context of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory, this asymmetry is related to a low-energy constant d_Δ^- that characterizes the parity-violating γNΔ coupling. Zhu et al. calculated d_Δ^- in a model benchmarked by the large asymmetries seen in hyperon weak radiative decays, and predicted potentially large asymmetries for this process, ranging from A_γ^-=-5.2 to +5.2 ppm. The measurement performed in this work leads to A_γ^-=-0.36±1.06±0.37±0.03 ppm (where sources of statistical, systematic and theoretical uncertainties are included), which would disfavor enchancements considered by Zhu et al. proportional to V_(ud)/V_(us). The measurement is part of a program of inelastic scattering measurements that were conducted by the G0 experiment, seeking to determine the N-Δ axial transition form factors using PV electron scattering.

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A_PV in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from 208Pb. A_PV is sensitive to the radius of the neutron distribution (Rn). The result A_PV = 0.656 \pm 0.060 (stat) \pm 0.014 (syst) ppm corresponds to a difference between the radii of the neutron and proton distributions Rn - Rp = 0.33 +0.16 -0.18 fm and provides the first electroweak observation of the neutron skin which is expected in a heavy, neutron-rich nucleus., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetries in elastic scattering of transversely polarized electrons from the proton, and performed the first measurement in quasi-elastic scattering on the deuteron, at backward angles (lab scattering angle of 108 degrees) for Q2 = 0.22 GeV^2/c^2 and 0.63 GeV^2/c^2 at beam energies of 362 MeV and 687 MeV, respectively. The asymmetry arises due to the imaginary part of the interference of the two-photon exchange amplitude with that of single photon exchange. Results for the proton are consistent with a model calculation which includes inelastic intermediate hadronic (piN) states. An estimate of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for the scattering from the neutron is made using a quasi-static deuterium approximation, and is also in agreement with theory.

GaAs-based dc high voltage photoguns used at accelerators with extensive user programs must exhibit long photocathode operating lifetime. Achieving this goal represents a significant challenge for proposed high average current facilities that must operate at tens of milliamperes or more. This paper describes techniques to maintain good vacuum while delivering beam, and techniques that minimize the ill effects of ion bombardment, the dominant mechanism that reduces photocathode yield of a GaAs-based dc high voltage photogun. Experimental results presented here demonstrate enhanced lifetime at high beam currents by: (a) operating with the drive laser beam positioned away from the electrostatic center of the photocathode, (b) limiting the photocathode active area to eliminate photoemission from regions of the photocathode that do not support efficient beam delivery, (c) using a large drive laser beam to distribute ion damage over a larger area, and (d) by applying a relatively low bias voltage to the anode to repel ions created within the downstream beam line. A combination of these techniques provided the best total charge extracted lifetimes in excess of 1000 C at dc beam currents up to 9.5 mA, using green light illumination of bulk GaAs inside a 100 kV photogun.

In the G0 experiment, performed at Jefferson Lab, the parity-violating elastic scattering of electrons from protons and quasi-elastic scattering from deuterons is measured in order to determine the neutral weak currents of the nucleon. Asymmetries as small as 1 part per million in the scattering of a polarized electron beam are determined using a dedicated apparatus. It consists of specialized beam-monitoring and control systems, a cryogenic hydrogen (or deuterium) target, and a superconducting, toroidal magnetic spectrometer equipped with plastic scintillation and aerogel Cerenkov detectors, as well as fast readout electronics for the measurement of individual events. We have measured parity violating asymmetries in elastic electron-proton and quasi-elastic electrondeuteron scattering at backward electron angle. These measurements have been done at two momentum transfers : Q2 = 0.22 and 0.63 (GeV/c)2 . Together with our previous forward angle measurement [1], we can extract strange quark contributions to the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon, as well as nucleon axial form factor coming from the neutral weak interaction. The results indicate a strange quark magnetic contribution close to zero at these Q2 , and a possible non zero strange quark electric contribution for the high Q2 . The first Q2 behavior measurement of the nucleon axial form factor in elastic electron scattering shows a good agreement with radiative corrections calculated at Q2 = 0 and with a dipole form using the axial mass determined in neutrino scattering.

We have measured parity-violating asymmetries in elastic electron-proton and quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering at Q^2 = 0.22 and 0.63 GeV^2. They are sensitive to strange quark contributions to currents in the nucleon, and to the nucleon axial current. The results indicate strange quark contributions of < 10% of the charge and magnetic nucleon form factors at these four-momentum transfers. A new dc high voltage spin-polarized photoelectron gun has been constructed that employs a compact inverted-geometry ceramic insulator. Photogun performance at 100 kV bias voltage is summarized.

Ion pumps are common vacuum pumps on DC high voltage photoguns and baked-accelerator beamlines. Commercial ion pump power supplies provide a measure of the electrical current drawn by the pump, but typically have resolution to only {approx}0.1 uA, which corresponds to pressure {approx}10{sup -9} Torr, a value considerably higher than the minimum pressure required by photoguns and nearby beamline. This submission describes a very sensitive in-house-built ion pump power supply with current monitoring capability good to less than 1 nA, and corresponding pressure in the low-minus;10{sup -11} Torr range. Besides providing 'free' pressure monitoring on a scale equivalent to the best available commercial pressure gauges, the ion pump power supply also serves as a sensitive diagnostic for detecting field emission from the photogun cathode electrode and bad electron beam orbits that could diminish photogun operating lifetime. Since its inception, this ion pump power supply has become an invaluable tool for operating the CEBAF polarized electron source. It is also a very useful low-cost diagnostic for ultrahigh vacuum studies in the laboratory.

Ion back‐bombardment is the dominant mechanism that limits the operating lifetime of DC high voltage GaAs photoelectron guns. In this work, an electrically isolated anode electrode was used to distinguish the QE damage contributions of ions produced within the cathode/anode gap and those produced downstream of the anode. This new anode design provides a means to suppress QE decay due to ionized gas in the beam line.

During the 1990s, at numerous facilities world wide, extensive R&D devoted to constructing reliable GaAs photoguns helped ensure successful accelerator-based nuclear and high-energy physics programs using spin polarized electron beams. Today, polarized electron source technology is considered mature, with most GaAs photoguns meeting accelerator and experiment beam specifications in a relatively trouble-free manner. Proposals for new collider facilities however, require electron beams with parameters beyond today's state-of-the-art and serve to renew interest in conducting polarized electron source R&D. And at CEBAF/Jefferson Lab, there is an immediate pressing need to prepare for new experiments that require considerably more beam current than before. One experiment in particular?Q-weak, a parity violation experiment that will look for physics beyond the Standard Model?requires 180 uA average current at polarization >80% for a duration of one year, with run-averaged helicity correlate

Users receive very high beam polarization from reliable GaAs photoelectron guns at facilities worldwide. Satisfaction with beam quality (and a number of lab closures) has reduced the level of polarized source R&D from the heyday of 1990s. However, new experiments and new accelerators proposals including high current unpolarized machines, require GaAs photoguns with capabilities that exceed today's state of the art. This submission describes the capabilities of today's high- polarization DC high voltage GaAs photoguns and discusses issues that must be addressed to meet new demands.

Substantially more than half of the electromagnetic nuclear physics experiments conducted at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Laboratory) require highly polarized electron beams, often at high average current. Spin-polarized electrons are produced by photoemission from various GaAs-based semiconductor photocathodes, using circularly polarized laser light with photon energy slightly larger than the semiconductor band gap. The photocathodes are prepared by activation of the clean semiconductor surface to negative electron affinity using cesium and oxidation. Historically, in many laboratories worldwide, these photocathodes have had short operational lifetimes at high average current, and have often deteriorated fairly quickly in ultrahigh vacuum even without electron beam delivery. At Jefferson Lab, we have developed a polarized electron source in which the photocathodes degrade exceptionally slowly without electron emission, and in which ion back bombardment is the predominant mechanism limiting the operational lifetime of the cathodes during electron emission. We have reproducibly obtained cathode 1/e dark lifetimes over two years, and 1/e charge density and charge lifetimes during electron beam delivery of over $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{5}\text{ }\mathrm{C}/{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ and 200 C, respectively. This source is able to support uninterrupted high average current polarized beam delivery to three experimental halls simultaneously for many months at a time. Many of the techniques we report here are directly applicable to the development of GaAs photoemission electron guns to deliver high average current, high brightness unpolarized beams.

We report new measurements of the parity-violating asymmetry A_PV in elastic scattering of 3 GeV electrons off hydrogen and 4He targets with ~6.0 degrees. The 4He result is A_PV = (+6.40 +/- 0.23 (stat) +/- 0.12 (syst)) x10^-6. The hydrogen result is A_PV = (-1.58 +/- 0.12 (stat) +/- 0.04 (syst)) x10^-6. These results significantly improve constraints on the electric and magnetic strange form factors G_E^s and G_M^s. We extract G_E^s = 0.002 +/- 0.014 +/- 0.007 at = 0.077 GeV^2, and G_E^s + 0.09 G_M^s = 0.007 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.006 at = 0.109 GeV^2, providing new limits on the role of strange quarks in the nucleon charge and magnetization distributions.

This work extends past research at Jefferson Lab aimed at better appreciating the mechanisms that limit photocathode operational lifetime at high current (> 1 mA). Specifically, the performance of an improved 100 kV DC high voltage load locked photogun will be described. Although difficult to measure directly, we believe the new gun has better vacuum conditions compared to the original gun, as indicated by enhanced photocathode lifetimes exceeding 2000 C using a 1.55 mm diameter drive laser spot at the photocathode. In addition, the dependence of the lifetime on the laser spot size at the photocathode was measured and a charge density lifetime exceeding 106 C/cm2 was measured with a 0.32 mm laser spot diameter.

A new GaAs DC high voltage load lock photogun has been constructed at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab), with improved vacuum and photocathode preparation capabilities. As reported previously, this gun was used to study photocathode lifetime with bulk GaAs at DC beam currents between 1 and 10 mA. In this submission, lifetime measurements were performed using high polarization strained-superlattice GaAs photocathode material at beam currents to 1 mA, with near bandgap light from a fiber based drive laser having picosecond optical pulses and RF time structure.
