Abstract: We report the discovery of GRB 221009A, the highest flux gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever observed by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM). This GRB has continuous prompt emission lasting more than 600 s, which smoothly transitions to afterglow emission visible in the Fermi-GBM energy range (8 keV–40 MeV), and total energetics higher than any other burst in the Fermi-GBM sample. By using a variety of new and existing analysis techniques we probe the spectral and temporal evolution of GRB 221009A. We find no emission prior to the Fermi-GBM trigger time ( t _0 ; 2022 October 9 at 13:16:59.99 UTC), indicating that this is the time of prompt emission onset. The triggering pulse exhibits distinct spectral and temporal properties suggestive of the thermal, photospheric emission of shock breakout, with significant emission up to ∼15 MeV. We characterize the onset of external shock at t _0 + 600 s and find evidence of a plateau region in the early-afterglow phase, which transitions to a slope consistent with Swift-XRT afterglow measurements. We place the total energetics of GRB 221009A in context with the rest of the Fermi-GBM sample and find that this GRB has the highest total isotropic-equivalent energy ( E _γ _,iso = 1.0 × 10 ^55 erg) and second highest isotropic-equivalent luminosity ( L _γ _,iso = 9.9 × 10 ^53 erg s ^–1 ) based on its redshift of z = 0.151. These extreme energetics are what allowed us to observe the continuously emitting central engine of Fermi-GBM from the beginning of the prompt emission phase through the onset of early afterglow.

Abstract: The Swift Deep Galactic Plane Survey (DGPS) is a Swift Key Project consisting of 380 tiled pointings covering ∼40 deg ^2 of the Galactic plane between longitude 10 < ∣ l ∣ < 30 deg and latitude ∣ b ∣ < 0.5 deg. Each pointing has a 5 ks exposure, yielding a total of 1.9 Ms spread across the entire survey footprint. Phase I observations were carried out between 2017 March and 2021 May. The survey is complete to depth L _X > 10 ^34 erg s ^−1 to the edge of the Galaxy. The main survey goal is to produce a rich sample of new X-ray sources and transients, while also covering a broad discovery space. Here, we introduce the survey strategy and present a catalog of sources detected during Phase I observations. In total, we identify 928 X-ray sources, of which 348 are unique to our X-ray catalog. We report on the characteristics of sources in our catalog and highlight sources newly classified and published by the DGPS team.

Abstract: We present the results of our X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical follow-up campaigns of 1RXS J165424.6-433758, an X-ray source detected with the Swift Deep Galactic Plane Survey. The source X-ray spectrum (Swift and NuSTAR) is described by thermal bremsstrahlung radiation with a temperature of kT = 10.1 ± 1.2 keV, yielding an X-ray (0.3–10 keV8) luminosity L _X = (6.5 ± 0.8) × 10 ^31 erg s ^−1 at a Gaia distance of 460 pc. Spectroscopy with the Southern African Large Telescope revealed a flat continuum dominated by emission features, demonstrating an inverse Balmer decrement, the λ 4640 Bowen blend, almost a dozen He i lines, and He ii λ 4541, λ 4686, and λ 5411. Our high-speed photometry demonstrates a preponderance of flickering and flaring episodes, and revealed the orbital period of the system, P _orb = 2.87 hr, which fell well within the cataclysmic variable (CV) period gap between 2 and 3 hr. These features classify 1RXS J165424.6-433758 as a nearby polar magnetic CV.

Abstract: The transition from prompt to afterglow emission is one of the most exciting and least understood phases in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Correlations among optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray emission in GRBs have been explored, to attempt to answer whether the earliest optical emission comes from internal and/or external shocks. We present optical photometric observations of GRB 180325A collected with the TAROT and RATIR ground-based telescopes. These observations show two strong optical flashes with separate peaks at ∼50 and ∼120 s, followed by a temporally extended optical emission. We also present X-rays and gamma-ray observations of GRB 180325A, detected by the Burst Alert Telescope and X-ray Telescope, on the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory, which both observed a narrow flash at ∼80 s. We show that the prompt gamma-ray and X-ray early emission shares similar temporal and spectral features consistent with internal dissipation within the relativistic outflow (e.g., by internal shocks or magnetic reconnection), while the early optical flashes are likely generated by the reverse shock that decelerates the ejecta as it sweeps up the external medium.

Abstract: We report on the observations of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 190114C by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The prompt gamma-ray emission was detected by the Fermi GRB Monitor (GBM), the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), and the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and the long-lived afterglow emission was subsequently observed by the GBM, LAT, Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT), and Swift UV Optical Telescope. The early-time observations reveal multiple emission components that evolve independently, with a delayed power-law component that exhibits significant spectral attenuation above 40 MeV in the first few seconds of the burst. This power-law component transitions to a harder spectrum that is consistent with the afterglow emission observed by the XRT at later times. This afterglow component is clearly identifiable in the GBM and BAT light curves as a slowly fading emission component on which the rest of the prompt emission is superimposed. As a result, we are able to observe the transition from internal-shock- to external-shock-dominated emission. We find that the temporal and spectral evolution of the broadband afterglow emission can be well modeled as synchrotron emission from a forward shock propagating into a wind-like circumstellar environment. We estimate the initial bulk Lorentz factor using the observed high-energy spectral cutoff. Considering the onset of the afterglow component, we constrain the deceleration radius at which this forward shock begins to radiate in order to estimate the maximum synchrotron energy as a function of time. We find that even in the LAT energy range, there exist high-energy photons that are in tension with the theoretical maximum energy that can be achieved through synchrotron emission from a shock. These violations of the maximum synchrotron energy are further compounded by the detection of very high-energy (VHE) emission above 300 GeV by MAGIC concurrent with our observations. We conclude that the observations of VHE photons from GRB 190114C necessitates either an additional emission mechanism at very high energies that is hidden in the synchrotron component in the LAT energy range, an acceleration mechanism that imparts energy to the particles at a rate that is faster than the electron synchrotron energy-loss rate, or revisions of the fundamental assumptions used in estimating the maximum photon energy attainable through the synchrotron process.

Abstract: A deep survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud at ~0.1-100TeV photon energies with the Cherenkov Telescope Array is planned. We assess the detection prospects based on a model for the emission of the galaxy, comprising the four known TeV emitters, mock populations of sources, and interstellar emission on galactic scales. We also assess the detectability of 30 Doradus and SN 1987A, and the constraints that can be derived on the nature of dark matter. The survey will allow for fine spectral studies of N157B, N132D, LMC P3, and 30 Doradus C, and half a dozen other sources should be revealed, mainly pulsar-powered objects. The remnant from SN 1987A could be detected if it produces cosmic-ray nuclei with a flat power-law spectrum at high energies, or with a steeper index 2.3-2.4 pending a flux increase by a factor >3-4 over ~2015-2035. Large-scale interstellar emission remains mostly out of reach of the survey if its >10GeV spectrum has a soft photon index ~2.7, but degree-scale 0.1-10TeV pion-decay emission could be detected if the cosmic-ray spectrum hardens above >100GeV. The 30 Doradus star-forming region is detectable if acceleration efficiency is on the order of 1-10% of the mechanical luminosity and diffusion is suppressed by two orders of magnitude within, Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Abstract: Long-duration γ-ray bursts (GRBs) originate from ultra-relativistic jets launched from the collapsing cores of dying massive stars. They are characterized by an initial phase of bright and highly variable radiation in the kiloelectronvolt-to-megaelectronvolt band, which is probably produced within the jet and lasts from milliseconds to minutes, known as the prompt emission. Subsequently, the interaction of the jet with the surrounding medium generates shock waves that are responsible for the afterglow emission, which lasts from days to months and occurs over a broad energy range from the radio to the gigaelectronvolt bands. The afterglow emission is generally well explained as synchrotron radiation emitted by electrons accelerated by the external shock. Recently, intense long-lasting emission between 0.2 and 1 teraelectronvolts was observed from GRB 190114C. Here we report multifrequency observations of GRB 190114C, and study the evolution in time of the GRB emission across 17 orders of magnitude in energy, from 5 × 10^(−6) to 10^(12) electronvolts. We find that the broadband spectral energy distribution is double-peaked, with the teraelectronvolt emission constituting a distinct spectral component with power comparable to the synchrotron component. This component is associated with the afterglow and is satisfactorily explained by inverse Compton up-scattering of synchrotron photons by high-energy electrons. We find that the conditions required to account for the observed teraelectronvolt component are typical for GRBs, supporting the possibility that inverse Compton emission is commonly produced in GRBs.

A.; Zech, A.; Zechlin, H.; Zhdanov, V., I; Zivec, M., The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for γ astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of γ cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of γ absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift z=2 and to constrain or detect γ halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3 pG . Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from γ astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. Abstract: We report on observations of the candidate Be/X-ray binary IGR J18219$-$1347 with \textit{Swift}/XRT, \textit{NuSTAR}, and \textit{NICER} during Type-I outbursts in March and June 2020. Our timing analysis revealed the spin period of a neutron star with $P_\textrm{spin}=52.46$ s. This periodicity, combined with the known orbital period of $72.4$ d, indicates that the system is a BeXRB. Furthermore, by comparing the infrared counterpart's spectral energy distribution to known BeXRBs, we confirm this classification and set a distance of approximately $10-15$ kpc for the source. The source's broadband X-ray spectrum ($1.5-50$ keV) is described by an absorbed power-law with photon index $\Gamma$\,$\sim$\,$0.5$ and cutoff energy at $\sim$\,$13$ keV., Comment: Revised manuscript. Abstract: Because they are bright and distant, Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) have been used for more than a decade to test propagation of photons and to constrain relevant Quantum Gravity (QG) models in which the velocity of photons in vacuum can depend on their energy. With its unprecedented sensitivity and energy coverage, the Fermi satellite has provided the most constraining results on the QG energy scale so far. In this talk, the latest results obtained from the analysis of four bright GRBs observed by the Large Area Telescope will be reviewed. These robust results, cross-checked using three different analysis techniques set the limit on QG energy scale at E(sub QG,1) greater than 7.6 times the Planck energy for linear dispersion and E(sub QG,2) greater than 1.3 x 10(exp 11) gigaelectron volts for quadratic dispersion (95% CL). After describing the data and the analysis techniques in use, results will be discussed and confronted to latest constraints obtained with Active Galactic Nuclei.

Abstract: Publisher's version (útgefin grein), We present the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) observations of the binary neutron star merger event GW170817 and the associated short gamma-ray burst (SGRB) GRB 170817A detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. The LAT was entering the South Atlantic Anomaly at the time of the LIGO/Virgo trigger (t GW) and therefore cannot place constraints on the existence of high-energy (E > 100 MeV) emission associated with the moment of binary coalescence. We focus instead on constraining high-energy emission on longer timescales. No candidate electromagnetic counterpart was detected by the LAT on timescales of minutes, hours, or days after the LIGO/Virgo detection. The resulting flux upper bound (at 95% C.L.) from the LAT is 4.5 × 10−10 erg cm−2 s−1 in the 0.1–1 GeV range covering a period from t GW + 1153 s to t GW + 2027 s. At the distance of GRB 170817A, this flux upper bound corresponds to a luminosity upper bound of 9.7 × 1043 erg s−1, which is five orders of magnitude less luminous than the only other LAT SGRB with known redshift, GRB 090510. We also discuss the prospects for LAT detection of electromagnetic counterparts to future gravitational-wave events from Advanced LIGO/Virgo in the context of GW170817/GRB 170817A., This work performed in part under DOE Contract DE-AC02-76SF00515.

15. The spectral-temporal properties of the prompt pulses and rapid decay phase of gamma-ray bursts

Abstract: The prompt emission from GRBs is the brightest electromagnetic emission known yet it’s origin is not understood. The flux density of individual prompt pulses of a GRB can be represented by an analytical expression derived assuming the emission is from a thin, ultra-relativistically expanding, uniform, spherical shell over a finite range of radii. We present the results of fitting this analytical expression to the lightcurves from the four standard Swift BAT energy bands and two standard Swift XRT energy bands of 12 bursts. The expression includes the High Latitude Emission (HLE) component and the fits provide a rigourous demonstration that the HLE can explain the Rapid Decay Phase (RDP) of the prompt emission. The model also accommodates some aspects of energy-dependent lag and energy-dependent pulse width, but there are features in the data which are not well represented. Some pulses have a hard, narrow peak which is not well fitted or a rise and decay which is faster than expected using the standard indices derived assuming synchrotron emission from internal shocks, although it might be possible to accommodate these features using a different emission mechanism within the same overall framework. The luminosity of pulses is correlated with the peak energy of the pulse spectrum, Lf / (Epeak(1+z)) 1.8 , and anti-correlated with the time since ejection of the pulse, Lf / (Tf=(1 + z)) 2.0 .

Abstract: Swift captured for the first time a smoothly rising X-ray re-brightening of clear non-flaring origin after the steep decay in a long gamma-ray burst (GRB): GRB081028. A rising phase is likely present in all GRBs but is usually hidden by the prompt tail emission and constitutes the first manifestation of what is later to give rise to the shallow decay phase. Contemporaneous optical observations reveal a rapid evolution of the injection frequency of a fast cooling synchrotron spectrum through the optical band, which disfavours the afterglow onset (start of the forward shock emission along our line of sight when the outflow is decelerated) as the origin of the observed re-brightening. We investigate alternative scenarios and find that the observations are consistent with the predictions for a narrow jet viewed off-axis. The high on-axis energy budget implied by this interpretation suggests different physical origins of the prompt and (late) afterglow emission. Strong spectral softening takes place from the prompt to the steep decay phase: we track the evolution of the spectral peak energy from the gamma-rays to the X-rays and highlight the problems of the high latitude and adiabatic cooling interpretations. Notably, a softening of both the high and low spectral slopes with time is also observed. We discuss the low on-axis radiative efficiency of GRB081028 comparing its properties against a sample of Swift long GRBs with secure E_gamma,iso measurements.

Abstract: We present high sensitivity Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations 806 days after the gamma-ray burst of 2003 March 29 (GRB030329). The angular diameter of the radio afterglow is measured to be 0.347 +- 0.09 mas, corresponding to 0.99 +- 0.26 pc at the redshift of GRB030329 (z = 0.1685). The evolution of the image size favors a uniform external density over an R^-2 wind-like density profile (at distances of R >~10^18 cm from the source), although the latter cannot be ruled out yet. The current apparent expansion velocity of the image size is only mildly relativistic, suggesting a non-relativistic transition time of t_NR ~ 1 yr. A rebrightening, or at least a significant flattening in the flux decay, is expected within the next several years as the counter-jet becomes visible (this has not yet been observed). Abstract: We present a detailed spectral analysis of the prompt and afterglow emission of four nearby long-soft gamma-ray bursts (GRBs 980425, 030329, 031203, and 060218) that were spectroscopically found to be associated with type Ic supernovae, and compare them to the general GRB population. For each event, we investigate the spectral and luminosity evolution, and estimate the total energy budget based upon broadband observations. The observational inventory for these events has become rich enough to allow estimates of their energy content in relativistic and sub-relativistic form. The result is a global portrait of the effects of the physical processes responsible for producing long-soft GRBs. In particular, we find that the values of the energy released in mildly relativistic outflows appears to have a significantly smaller scatter than those found in highly relativistic ejecta. This is consistent with a picture in which the energy released inside the progenitor star is roughly standard, while the fraction of that energy that ends up in highly relativistic ejecta outside the star can vary dramatically between different events., Comment: 55 pages including 23 figures and 8 tables. Abstract: The rapid succession of discovery of short--duration hard--spectrum GRBs has led to unprecedented insights into the energetics of the explosion and nature of the progenitors. Yet short of the detection of a smoking gun, like a burst of coincident gravitational radiation or a Li-Paczynski mini-supernova, it is unlikely that a definitive claim can be made for the progenitors. As was the case with long--duration soft--spectrum GRBs, however, the expectation is that a systematic study of the hosts and the locations of short GRBs could begin to yield fundamental clues about their nature. We present the first aggregate study of the host galaxies of short--duration hard--spectrum GRBs. In particular, we present the Gemini--North and Keck discovery spectra of the galaxies that hosted three short GRBs and a moderate--resolution (R~6000) spectrum of a fourth host. Abstract: GRB 130427A occurred in a relatively nearby galaxy; its prompt emission had the largest GRB fluence ever recorded. The afterglow of GRB 130427A was bright enough for the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray (NuSTAR) to observe it in the 3-79 keV energy range long after its prompt emission (~1.5 and 5 days). This range, where afterglow observations were previously not possible, bridges an important spectral gap. Combined with Swift, Fermi and ground-based optical data, NuSTAR observations unambiguously establish a single afterglow spectral component from optical to multi-GeV energies a day after the event, which is almost certainly synchrotron radiation. Such an origin of the late-time Fermi/LAT > 10 GeV photons requires revisions in our understanding of collisionless relativistic shock physics., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJL

Abstract: MAXI J1659-152 was discovered on 2010 September 25 as a new X-ray transient, initially identified as a gamma-ray burst, but was later shown to be a new X-ray binary with a black hole as the most likely compact object. Dips in the X-ray light curves have revealed that MAXI J1659-152 is the shortest period black hole candidate identified to date. Here we present the results of a large observing campaign at radio, sub-millimeter, near-infrared (nIR), optical and ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. We have combined this very rich data set with the available X-ray observations to compile a broadband picture of the evolution of this outburst. We have performed broadband spectral modeling, demonstrating the presence of a spectral break at radio frequencies and a relationship between the radio spectrum and X-ray states. Also, we have determined physical parameters of the accretion disk and put them into context with respect to the other parameters of the binary system. Finally, we have investigated the radio-X-ray and nIR/optical/UV-X-ray correlations up to ~3 years after the outburst onset to examine the link between the jet and the accretion disk, and found that there is no significant jet contribution to the nIR emission when the source is in the soft or intermediate X-ray spectral state, consistent with our detection of the jet break at radio frequencies during these states., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS after minor revisions

Abstract: The origin of prompt emission from gamma ray bursts remains to be an open question. Correlated prompt optical and gamma-ray emission observed in a handful of GRBs strongly suggests a common emission region, but failure to adequately fit the broadband GRB spectrum prompted the hypothesis of different emission mechanisms for the low- and high-energy radiations. We demonstrate that our multi-component model for GRB gamma-ray prompt emission provides an excellent fit to GRB 110205A from optical to gamma-ray energies. Our results show that the optical and highest gamma-ray emissions have the same spatial and spectral origin, which is different from the bulk of the X- and softest gamma-ray radiation. Finally, our accurate redshift estimate for GRB 110205A demonstrates promise for using GRBs as cosmological standard candles., Comment: 6 pages of article (4 figures and 1 table). Abstract: The galaxy NGC2770 hosted two core-collapse supernova explosions, SN2008D and SN2007uy, within 10 days of each other and 9 years after the first supernova of the same type, SN1999eh, was found in that galaxy. In particular SN2008D attracted a lot of attention due to the detection of an X-ray outburst, which has been hypothesized to be caused by either a (mildly) relativistic jet or the supernova shock breakout. We present an extensive study of the radio emission from SN2008D and SN2007uy: flux measurements with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, covering ~600 days with observing frequencies ranging from 325 MHz to 8.4 GHz. The results of two epochs of global Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations are also discussed. We have examined the molecular gas in the host galaxy NGC2770 with the Arizona Radio Observatory 12-m telescope, and present the implications of our observations for the star formation and seemingly high SN rate in this galaxy. Abstract: We present the observations of GRB090510 performed by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope and the Swift observatory. This is a bright, short burst that shows an extended emission detected in the GeV range. Furthermore, its optical emission initially rises, a feature so far observed only in long bursts, while the X-ray flux shows an initial shallow decrease, followed by a steeper decay. This exceptional behavior enables us to investigate the physical properties of the GRB outflow, poorly known in short bursts. The most popular model to explain the SDP is Hight Latitude Emission (HLE). Many models for the prompt emission give rise to HLE, like the popular internal shocks (IS) model, but some models do not, such as sporadic magnetic reconnection events. Knowing if the SDP is consistent with HLE would thus help distinguish between different prompt emission models. In order to test this, we model the prompt emission (and its tail) as the sum of independent pulses (and their tails). A single pulse is modeled as emission arising from an ultra-relativistic thin spherical expanding shell. We obtain analytic expressions for the flux in the IS model with a Band function spectrum. We find that in this framework the observed spectrum is also a Band function, and naturally softens with time. The decay of the SDP is initially dominated by the tail of the last pulse, but other pulses can dominate later. Abstract: The 2004 Dec. 27 giant Gamma-ray flare detected from the magnetar SGR 1806-20 created an expanding radio nebula which we have monitored with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Very Large Array. These data indicate that there was an increase in the observed flux ~25 days after the initial flare that lasted for ~8 days, which we believe is the result of ambient material swept-up and shocked by this radio nebula. For a distance to SGR 1806-20 of 15 kpc, using the properties of this rebrightening we infer that the initial blast wave was dominated by baryonic material of mass M>10^{24.5} g. For an initial expansion velocity v~0.7c (as derived in an accompanying paper), we infer this material had an initial kinetic energy E>10^{44.5} ergs. If this material originated from the magnetar itself, it may have emitted a burst of ultra-high energy (E > 1 TeV) neutrinos far brighter than that expected from other astrophysical sources., 7 pages, 2 figures. Abstract: ABSTRACT The paper describes the first spin echo Magnetic Resonance Imaging Logging (MRIL*) system. The system makes measurements while logging and does not require special borehole treatment. The tool employs static and radio-frequency magnetic fields to perform downhole the spin-echo magnetic resonance measurements with short â??dead timeâ?¿ that previously have been possible only in the laboratory. Logs of lithology independent porosity, irreducible water saturation and fluid diffusion coefficient are provided from real-time analysis of the spin-spin relaxation time (T2) decay of the fluids contained within the pore space of the formation. Spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) behavior is directly measured by the MRIL system. Engineering prototypes have undergone several field tests, including two tests at the Conoco Borehole Test Facility well in Newkirk, Oklahoma. Field data, including the demonstration of accuracy and repeatability are discussed. The magnetic resonance logs correlate well with measurements of porosity and irreducible water saturation made on core samples and with porosity data from standard density and neutron logging tools. Such data, from magnetic resonance logs, can be applied to the determination of porosity and irreducible water saturation, and thus to the estimation of permeability. INTRODUCTION Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is an important spectroscopic tool gaining broad usage as a laboratory technique in the oil industry to determine core and fluid properties. The Magnetic Resonance Imaging Log (MRIL) offers in situ measurements of these same properties in a moving, non destructive downhole logging system that does not require special borehole preparation. This results, for the first time, in a measurement of lithology independent porosity and irreducible water saturation, and multiple relaxation components of spin-spin relaxation time (T2) decay of the fluids contained in the formation. Also for the first time, downhole logs of fluid diffusion coefficients have been made with the MRIL system and preliminary results show consistent agreement with laboratory fluid diffusion coefficients. This paper describes the underlying NMR theories on which the MRIL system was developed, the calibration procedure, and how the NMR measurements made by the system are related to the petrophysical conditions encountered in the various rock formations downhole.

Abstract: The absorption signals of protons and deuterons in bound and nonbound water molecules in the aqueous nickelous system were observed. From the PMR and DMR measurements, the hyperfine coupling constants were calculated and found to be (1.3±0.1)×105 and (2.0±0.2)×104 Hz, respectively. The spin density at the proton (and deuteron) nuclei was calculated to be (2.9±0.3)×10−5 electrons/a.u.3, in accordance with theoretical expectations. The rate constant at 298°K for the exchange of water was found to be 3×104 sec−1, and the activation energy 12 kcal/mole. The relaxation time of the electron at 243°K, assuming T1e =T2e was found to be 1.9×10−12 sec and the activation ernergy 0.8 kcal/mole. The temperature dependence of the proton transverse relaxation rate was studied. It is suggested that in the absence of chemical exchange the transverse relaxation rate is governed both by the relaxation of the nickelous unpaired electrons and by the diffusional motion of the water molecules. Abstract: The hyperfine interactions in ferromagnetic cr2te3, crte and cr2te were studied by means of the mossbauer effect in 129i and 125te. The 129i measurements in crte and cr2te (at temperatures below tc) revealed the existence of two equally populated sets of te(i) sites with different internal fields acting at the iodine impurities nuclei. This was explained as being due to nonstoichiometry and the presence of interstitial chromium ions in the tetrahedral holes. The magnetic fields measured on the 125te nuclei in crte and cr2te were found to be considerably lower than those measured on the 129i impurities. A discussion of a transferred hyperfine interaction mechanism compatible with this trend, based upon the unpairing of the 5s electrons due to overlap with the 3de(g) orbitals is presented.

Abstract: This paper reports on 1 H and 31 P NMR as well as EPR measurements of the labeling reagent of ATPase sites, “Co(III)-(phen)-ATP.” This complex is found to be paramagnetic, as deduced both from its EPR spectrum and from the significant broadening, though almost unshifted, proton and phosphorus resonances. This paramagnetism is a result of the incorporation of the superoxide free-radical anion in the coordination sphere of the trivalent cobalt ion. Evidence for the presence of superoxide in the complex is based on competition experiments with cyanide, which is able to displace the superoxide anion. The latter was identified by its inducing effect on the photoreactivity of luminol. The displacement of superoxide by cyanide was accompanied by the abolition of the paramagnetism of the complex. The relative distances between the protons and phosphorus atoms of ATP and the superoxide anion in the complex were calculated using the NMR line-broadening data. Structural models compatible with the experimental results are proposed. Under conditions of excess of adenine nucleotides or phenanthroline, the coordinated ATP molecule becomes exchangeable. This phenomenon is attributed to the labilization of the cobaltic ion ligands induced by the superoxide anion.

Abstract: In vivo sodium magnetic resonance (MR) images of various structures--such as the heart, chest wall, kidneys, spine, liver, gallbladder, breasts, knees, hands, and feet--were obtained at 1.9 T. Improved sensitivity relative to standard spin-echo imaging was achieved with use of a modified three-dimensional acquisition sequence with short repetition and gradient-echo times (45 and 6.4 msec, respectively) and with use of special cylindrical and planar radio-frequency coils. Imaging times of 2-30 minutes were sufficient to render good-quality images with high contrast sensitivity. Relatively strong sodium signals were found to emanate from such sources as cerebrospinal fluid, blood serum, interstitial fluid, joint fluid, and cartilage. It is concluded that sodium imaging of body organs and extremities is feasible and is potentially of clinical diagnostic value, as is the more extensively studied sodium imaging of the head.

45. 1H NMR relaxation studies of the hydrogen-bonded imino protons of poly(dA-dT)

Abstract: Measurements on the thymine imino proton relaxation rates have been used to study various structural and dynamic properties of 53 +/- 15 base pair long poly(dA-dT). Below 10 degrees C, the relaxation is dominated by dipolar magnetic interactions. At 1 degrees C the relaxation of the transverse magnetization is exponential (R2 = 124 s-1), but the relaxation of longitudinal magnetization is highly nonexponential due to spin-diffusion effects (initial decay rate constant of 28 s-1 and a slower rate of approximately 2.5 s-1 after equilibration of spin polarization). Neither a rigid-rod model nor simple wormlike motions can account for the observed low-temperature relaxation behavior. However, when localized internal motions of the base pairs (three-state jump model) are allowed for, a good fit of the experimental data is obtained by using a correlation time for internal motion of 7 X 10(-10) s and an angular displacement of the bases of +/- 32 degrees relative to the helix axis. The observed R2/R1 ratio for the thymine imino proton yields a value of 1.14 +/- 0.08 A for the imino proton nitrogen distance. Nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) measurements establish that the base pairing in poly(dA-dT) is Watson-Crick in solution and not Hoogsteen. Exchange of the T-imino protons with H2O dominates the longitudinal relaxation above 28 degrees C (activation energy of 17 +/- 2 kcal and an exchange rate of 5 +/- 2 s-1 at 300 K). Similar values have been reported for the A X T base pairs in DNA restriction fragments and for A X U base pairs in poly(A) X poly(U). These observations can be explained by a model in which exchange of T-imino protons occurs as a result of a single base pair opening, with a rate that is approximately independent of nearest-neighbor sequences and DNA length. Our observations appear to be inconsistent with a soliton model of proton exchange.
