Soil organic matter (SOM) is key to maintaining soil fertility, mitigating climate change, combatting land degradation, and conserving above- and below-ground biodiversity and associated soil processes and ecosystem services. In order to derive management options for maintaining these essential services provided by soils, policy makers depend on robust, predictive models identifying key drivers of SOM dynamics. Existing SOM models and suggested guidelines for future SOM modelling are defined mostly in terms of plant residue quality and input and microbial decomposition, overlooking the significant regulation provided by soil fauna. The fauna controls almost any aspect of organic matter turnover, foremost by regulating the activity and functional composition of soil microorganisms and their physical–chemical connectivity with soil organic matter. We demonstrate a very strong impact of soil animals on carbon turnover, increasing or decreasing it by several dozen percent, sometimes even turning C sinks into C sources or vice versa. This is demonstrated not only for earthworms and other larger invertebrates but also for smaller fauna such as Collembola. We suggest that inclusion of soil animal activities (plant residue consumption and bioturbation altering the formation, depth, hydraulic properties and physical heterogeneity of soils) can fundamentally affect the predictive outcome of SOM models. Understanding direct and indirect impacts of soil fauna on nutrient availability, carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas emissions and plant growth is key to the understanding of SOM dynamics in the context of global carbon cycling models. We argue that explicit consideration of soil fauna is essential to make realistic modelling predictions on SOM dynamics and to detect expected non-linear responses of SOM dynamics to global change. We present a decision framework, to be further developed through the activities of KEYSOM, a European COST Action, for when mechanistic SOM models include soil fauna. The research activities of KEYSOM, such as field experiments and literature reviews, together with dialogue between empiricists and modellers, will inform how this is to be done.

Soils are exposed to multiple substance groups, including surfactants, which directly enter soils when they are used as additives in fire-fighting liquids or pesticide mixtures due to their surface tension-lowering properties. The impact of chemicals on soil health is often tested with the springtail reproduction test. We tested the effects of the trisiloxane Break-Thru® S 301 on the reproduction of Folsomia candida in three soils according to Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guideline 232. Juveniles were extracted either by heat or flotation. In the latter method, recommended by OECD 232, test soil is flooded with water and stirred so that springtails float and swim on the water surface. Additionally, we tested the impact of Break-Thru® S 301 on other life-history endpoints linked with reproduction, namely reproduction investment and hatching success. We found a significant decline of recovered springtails at soil concentrations of Break-Thru® S 301 down to 2 mg/kg in sandy soils when using flotation. However, using heat extraction no effects were found at the same concentrations. Also, reproduction investment and hatching success did not indicate any toxicity of Break-Thru® S 301 to springtails at all. In conclusion, Break-Thru® S 301 reduced the water surface tension in the flotation process so that springtail juveniles just sank and disappeared from the water surface. This artefact potentially can occur for all surfactants tested this way. We propose testing surfactant's impact on springtail flotation by adding a few drops of surfactant and observing springtails' sinking behaviour, before testing toxicity. Alternatively, heat extraction or surfactant controls can be applied. Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. Transformation, dissolution, and sorption of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NP) play an important role in freshwater ecosystems. We present the first mesocosm experiment on the fate of CuO-NP and the dynamics of the zooplankton community over a period of 12 months. Increasingly low (0.08-0.28 mg Cu L -1 ) and high (0.99-2.99 mg Cu L -1 ) concentrations of CuO-NP and CuSO 4 (0.10-0.34 mg Cu L -1 ) were tested in a multiple dosing scenario. At the high applied concentration (CuO-NP&#95;H) CuO-NP aggregated and sank onto the sediment layer, where we recovered 63% of Cu applied. For the low concentration (CuO-NP&#95;L) only 41% of applied copper could be recovered in the sediment. In the water column, the percentage of initially applied Cu recovered was on average 3-fold higher for CuO-NP&#95;L than for CuO-NP&#95;H. Zooplankton abundance was substantially compromised in the treatments CuSO 4 ( p < 0.001) and CuO-NP&#95;L ( p < 0.001). Community analysis indicated that Cladocera were most affected (b k = -0.49), followed by Nematocera (b k = -0.32). The abundance of Cladocera over time and of Dixidae in summer was significantly reduced in the treatment CuO-NP&#95;L ( p < 0.001; p < 0.05) compared to the Control. Our results indicate a higher potential for negative impacts on the freshwater community when lower concentrations of CuO-NP (<0.1 mg Cu L -1 ) enter the ecosystem.

The determination of depth profiles across interfaces is of primary importance in many scientific and technological areas. Photoemission spectroscopy is in principle well suited for this purpose, yet a quantitative implementation for investigations of liquid-vapor interfaces is hindered by the lack of understanding of electron-scattering processes in liquids. Previous studies have shown, however, that core-level photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) are altered by depth-dependent elastic electron scattering and can, thus, reveal information on the depth distribution of species across the interface. Here, we explore this concept further and show that the experimental anisotropy parameter characterizing the PAD scales linearly with the average distance of atoms along the surface normal obtained by molecular dynamics simulations. This behavior can be accounted for in the low-collision-number regime. We also show that results for different atomic species can be compared on the same length scale. We demonstrate that atoms separated by about 1 Å along the surface normal can be clearly distinguished with this method, achieving excellent depth resolution.

Transition metal carbides, especially Mo 2 C, are praised to be efficient electrocatalysts to reduce CO 2 to valuable hydrocarbons. However, on Mo 2 C in an aqueous electrolyte, exclusively the competing hydrogen evolution reaction takes place, and this discrepancy to theory was traced back to the formation of a thin oxide layer at the electrode surface. Here, we study the CO 2 reduction activity at Mo 2 C in a non-aqueous electrolyte to avoid such passivation and to determine products and the CO 2 reduction reaction pathway. We find a tendency of CO 2 to reduce to carbon monoxide. This process is inevitably coupled with the decomposition of acetonitrile to a 3-aminocrotonitrile anion. Furthermore, a unique behavior of the non-aqueous acetonitrile electrolyte is found, where the electrolyte, instead of the electrocatalyst, governs the catalytic selectivity of the CO 2 reduction. Soil life supports the functioning and biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Springtails (Collembola) are among the most abundant soil arthropods regulating soil fertility and flow of energy through above- and belowground food webs. However, the global distribution of springtail diversity and density, and how these relate to energy fluxes remains unknown. Here, using a global dataset representing 2470 sites, we estimate the total soil springtail biomass at 27.5 megatons carbon, which is threefold higher than wild terrestrial vertebrates, and record peak densities up to 2 million individuals per square meter in the tundra. Despite a 20-fold biomass difference between the tundra and the tropics, springtail energy use (community metabolism) remains similar across the latitudinal gradient, owing to the changes in temperature with latitude. Neither springtail density nor community metabolism is predicted by local species richness, which is high in the tropics, but comparably high in some temperate forests and even tundra. Changes in springtail activity may emerge from latitudinal gradients in temperature, predation and resource limitation in soil communities. Contrasting relationships of biomass, diversity and activity of springtail communities with temperature suggest that climate warming will alter fundamental soil biodiversity metrics in different directions, potentially restructuring terrestrial food webs and affecting soil functioning., (© 2023. Membrane filtration has been increasingly used to separate dissolved metal ions from dispersed particles, commonly using ultrafiltration membranes, for example, polyethersulfone (PES) membranes with a molecular weight cut-off of 3 kDa. The disadvantage of this technique is an undesired retention of ions, resulting from Coulomb interactions with sulfonic acid groups of the membrane. Therefore, such a membrane acts similar to a cation exchanger column. We solved this drawback by a pretreatment of the PES membrane by other cations. Using CuSO 4 as a model compound, we compared the effectiveness of five cations using their salt solutions (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Fe 2+ , Ag + , Ba 2+ ) as pretreatment agents and identified the most effective pretreatment component for a high recovery of copper ions. After membrane filtration without pretreatment, only 52 ± 10%, 64 ± 5%, 75 ± 8%, and 89 ± 7% of nominal Cu concentrations were obtained using initial concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, and 4.0 mg L -1 , respectively. The efficiency of the investigated cations increased in the order Fe < Ag < Mg < Ca < Ba. Furthermore, we analyzed the most efficient concentration of the pretreatment agent. The best performance was achieved using 0.1 mol L -1 CaCl 2 which increased copper recovery to slightly below 100%, even at the lowest tested Cu concentration (recovery 93 ± 10% at 0.2 mg L -1 ). Soil invertebrates (i.e., soil fauna) are important drivers of many key processes in soils including soil aggregate formation, water retention, and soil organic matter transformation. Many soil fauna groups directly or indirectly participate in litter consumption. However, the quantity of litter consumed by major faunal groups across biomes remains unknown. To estimate this quantity, we reviewed > 1000 observations from 70 studies that determined the biomass of soil fauna across various biomes and 200 observations from 44 studies on litter consumption by soil fauna. To compare litter consumption with annual litterfall, we analyzed 692 observations from 24 litterfall studies and 183 observations from 28 litter stock studies. The biomass of faunal groups was highest in temperate grasslands and then decreased in the following order: boreal forest > temperate forest > tropical grassland > tundra > tropical forest > Mediterranean ecosystems > desert and semidesert. Tropical grasslands, desert biomes, and Mediterranean ecosystems were dominated by termites. Temperate grasslands were dominated by omnivores, while temperate forests were dominated by earthworms. On average, estimated litter consumption (relative to total litter input) ranged from a low of 14.9% in deserts to a high of 100.4% in temperate grassland. Litter consumption by soil fauna was greater in grasslands than in forests. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) can be applied as an efficient alternative to conventional Cu in agriculture. Negative effects of CuO-NPs on soil organisms were found, but only in clay-rich loamy soils. It is hypothesized that clay-NP interactions are the origin of the observed toxic effects. In the present study, artificial Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development soils containing 30% of kaolin or montmorillonite as clay type were spiked with 1-32 mg Cu/kg of uncoated CuO-NPs or CuCl 2 . We performed 28-day reproduction tests with springtails of the species Folsomia candida and recorded the survival, reproduction, dry weight, and Cu content of adults. In a second experiment, molting frequency and the Cu content of exuviae, as well as the biochemical endpoints metallothionein and catalase (CAT) in springtails, were investigated. In the reproduction assay, negative effects on all endpoints were observed, but only in soils containing montmorillonite and mostly for CuO-NPs. For the biochemical endpoints and Cu content of exuviae, effects were clearly distinct between Cu forms in montmorillonite soil, but a significant reduction compared to the control was only found for CAT activity. Therefore, the reduced CAT activity in CuO-NP-montmorillonite soil might be responsible for the observed toxicity, potentially resulting from reactive oxygen species formation overloading the antioxidant system. This process seems to be highly concentration-dependent, because all endpoints investigated in reproduction and biochemical assays of CuO-NP-montmorillonite treatments showed a nonlinear dose-response relationship and were constantly reduced by approximately 40% at a field-realistic concentration of 3 mg/kg, but not at 32 mg/kg. The results underline that clay-CuO-NP interactions are crucial for their toxic behavior, especially at low, field-realistic concentrations, which should be considered for risk assessment of CuO-NPs. The characterization of liquid-vapor interfaces at the molecular level is an important underpinning for a basic understanding of fundamental heterogeneous processes in many areas, such as atmospheric science. Here we use X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to study the adsorption of a model surfactant, octanoic acid, at the water-gas interface. In particular, we examine the information contained in photoelectron angular distributions and show that information about the relative depth of molecules and functional groups within molecules can be obtained from these measurements. Focusing on the relative location of carboxylate (COO - ) and carboxylic acid (COOH) groups at different solution pH, the former is found to be immersed deeper into the liquid-vapor interface, which is confirmed by classical molecular dynamics simulations. These results help establish photoelectron angular distributions as a sensitive tool for the characterization of molecules at the liquid-vapor interface.

The multipole-expansion (MPE) model is an implicit solvation model used to efficiently incorporate solvent effects in quantum chemistry. Even within the recent direct approach, the multipole basis used in MPE to express the dielectric response still solves the electrostatic problem inefficiently or not at all for solutes larger than approximately ten non-hydrogen atoms. In existing MPE parametrizations, the resulting systematic underestimation of the electrostatic solute-solvent interaction is presently compensated for by a systematic overestimation of nonelectrostatic attractive interactions. Even though the MPE model can thus reproduce experimental free energies of solvation of small molecules remarkably well, the inherent error cancellation makes it hard to assign physical meaning to the individual free-energy terms in the model, raising concerns about transferability. Here we resolve this issue by solving the electrostatic problem piecewise in 3D regions centered around all non-hydrogen nuclei of the solute, ensuring reliable convergence of the multipole series. The resulting method thus allows for a much improved reproduction of the dielectric response of a medium to a solute. Employing a reduced nonelectrostatic model with a single free parameter, in addition to the density isovalue defining the solvation cavity, our method yields free energies of solvation of neutral, anionic, and cationic solutes in water in good agreement with experiment.

There is an increasing interest in algae-based raw materials for medical, cosmetic or nutraceutical applications. Additionally, the high diversity of physicochemical properties of the different algal metabolites proposes these substances from microalgae as possible additives in the chemical industry. Among the wide range of natural products from red microalgae, research has mainly focused on extracellular polymers for additive use, while this study also considers the cellular components. The aim of the present study is to analytically characterize the extra- and intracellular molecular composition from the red microalga Dixoniella grisea and to evaluate its potential for being used in the tribological industry. D. grisea samples, fractionated into extracellular polymers (EPS), cells and medium, were examined for their molecular composition. This alga produces a highly viscous polymer, mainly composed of polysaccharides and proteins, being secreted into the culture medium. The EPS and biomass significantly differed in their molecular composition, indicating that they might be used for different bio-additive products. We also show that polysaccharides and proteins were the major chemical compounds in EPS, whereas the content of lipids depended on the separation protocol and the resulting product. Still, they did not represent a major group and were thus classified as a potential valuable side-product. Lyophilized algal fractions obtained from D. grisea were found to be not toxic when EPS were not included. Upon implementation of EPS as a commercial product, further assessment on the environmental toxicity to enchytraeids and other soil organisms is required. Our results provide a possible direction for developing a process to gain an environmentally friendly bio-additive for application in the tribological industry based on a biorefinery approach.

Background: There is growing interest in developing impedance planimetry as a tool to enhance the clinical outcomes for endoscopic and surgical management of achalasia. The primary aim of this study was to determine whether impedance planimetry measurements can predict clinical response and reflux following peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM)., Methods: A multicenter cohort study of patients with achalasia undergoing POEM was established from prospective databases and retrospective chart reviews. Patients who underwent impedance planimetry before and after POEM were included. Clinical response was defined as an Eckardt score of ≤ 3. Tenfold cross-validated area under curve (AUC) values were established for the different impedance planimetry measurements associated with clinical response and reflux development., Results: Of the 290 patients included, 91.7 % (266/290) had a clinical response and 39.4 % (108/274) developed reflux following POEM. The most predictive impedance planimetry measurements for a clinical response were: percent change in cross-sectional area (%ΔCSA) and percent change in distensibility index (%ΔDI), with AUCs of 0.75 and 0.73, respectively. Optimal cutoff values for %ΔCSA and %ΔDI to determine a clinical response were a change of 360 % and 272 %, respectively. Impedance planimetry values were much poorer at predicting post-POEM reflux, with AUCs ranging from 0.40 to 0.62., Conclusion: Percent change in CSA and distensibility index were the most predictive measures of a clinical response, with a moderate predictive ability. Soil samples from several European countries were scanned using medical computer tomography (CT) device and are now available as CT images. The analysis of these samples was carried out using deep learning methods. For this purpose, a VGG16 network was trained with the CT images (X). For the annotation (y) a new method for automated annotation, 'surrogate' learning, was introduced. The generated neural networks (NNs) were subjected to a detailed analysis. Among other things, transfer learning was used to check whether the NN can also be trained to other y-values. Visually, the NN was verified using a gradient-based class activation mapping (grad-CAM) algorithm. These analyses showed that the NN was able to generalize, i.e. to capture the spatial structure of the soil sample. Possible applications of the models are discussed., (© 2021 The Authors.)

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed medical care worldwide. General surgery has been affected in elective procedures, yet the implications for emergency surgery are unclear. The current study analyzes the effect of the COVID-19 lockdown in spring 2020 on appendicitis treatment in Germany., Methods: Hospitals that provided emergency surgical care during the COVID-19 lockdown were invited to participate. All patients diagnosed with appendicitis during the lockdown period (10 weeks) and, as a comparison group, patients from the same period in 2019 were analyzed. Clinical and laboratory parameters, intraoperative and pathological findings, and postoperative outcomes were analyzed., Results: A total of 1915 appendectomies from 41 surgical departments in Germany were included. Compared to 2019 the number of appendectomies decreased by 13.5% (1.027 to 888, p=0.003) during the first 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. The delay between the onset of symptoms and medical consultation was substantially longer in the COVID-19 risk group and for the elderly. The rate of complicated appendicitis increased (58.2 to 64.4%), while the absolute number of complicated appendicitis decreased from 597 to 569, (p=0.012). The rate of negative appendectomies decreased significantly (6.7 to 4.6%; p=0.012). Overall postoperative morbidity and mortality, however, did not change., Conclusion: The COVID-19 lockdown had significant effects on abdominal emergency surgery in Germany. These seem to result from a stricter selection and a longer waiting time between the onset of symptoms and medical consultation for risk patients. However, the standard of emergency surgical care in Germany was maintained.
