1. Numerical studies of collinear laser-assisted injection from a foil for plasma wakefield accelerators

Abstract: We present a laser-assisted electron injection scheme for beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration. The laser is collinear with the driver and triggers the injection of hot electrons into the plasma wake by interaction with a thin solid target. We present a baseline case using the AWAKE Run 2 parameters and then perform variations on key parameters to explore the scheme. It is found that the trapped witness electron charge may be tuned by altering laser parameters, with a strong dependence on the phase of the wake upon injection. Normalized emittance settles at the order of micrometres and varies with witness charge. The scheme is robust to misalignment, with a 1/10th plasma skin-depth offset (20 μm for the AWAKE case) having a negligible effect on the final beam. The final beam quality is better than similar existing schemes, and several avenues for further optimization are indicated. The constraints on the AWAKE experiment are very specific, but the general principles of this mechanism can be applied to future beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerator experiments.

2. Crowdsourced Doppler measurements of time standard stations demonstrating ionospheric variability

Abstract: Ionospheric variability produces measurable effects in Doppler shift of HF (high-frequency, 3–30 MHz) skywave signals. These effects are straightforward to measure with low-cost equipment and are conducive to citizen science campaigns. The low-cost Personal Space Weather Station (PSWS) network is a modular network of community-maintained, open-source receivers, which measure Doppler shift in the precise carrier signals of time standard stations. The primary goal of this paper is to explain the types of measurements this instrument can make and some of its use cases, demonstrating its role as the building block for a large-scale ionospheric and HF propagation measurement network which complements existing professional networks. Here, data from the PSWS network are presented for a period of time spanning late 2019 to early 2022. Software tools for the visualization and analysis of this living dataset are also discussed and provided. These tools are robust to data interruptions and to the addition, removal or modification of stations, allowing both short- and long-term visualization at higher density and faster cadence than other methods. These data may be used to supplement observations made with other geospace instruments in event-based analyses, e.g., traveling ionospheric disturbances and solar flares, and to assess the accuracy of the bottomside estimates of ionospheric models by comparing the oblique paths obtained by ionospheric ray tracers with those obtained by these receivers. Abstract: Abstract We present a measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum above 100 PeV using the part of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory that has a spacing of 750 m. An inflection of the spectrum is observed, confirming the presence of the so-called second-knee feature. The spectrum is then combined with that of the 1500 m array to produce a single measurement of the flux, linking this spectral feature with the three additional breaks at the highest energies. The combined spectrum, with an energy scale set calorimetrically via fluorescence telescopes and using a single detector type, results in the most statistically and systematically precise measurement of spectral breaks yet obtained. These measurements are critical for furthering our understanding of the highest energy cosmic rays.

Abstract: Abstract The hybrid design of the Pierre Auger Observatory allows for the measurement of the properties of extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays with unprecedented precision. By using an array of prototype underground muon detectors, we have performed the first direct measurement, by the Auger Collaboration, of the muon content of air showers between $$2\times 10^{17}$$ 2×1017 and $$2\times 10^{18}$$ 2×1018 eV. We have studied the energy evolution of the attenuation-corrected muon density, and compared it to predictions from air shower simulations. The observed densities are found to be larger than those predicted by models. We quantify this discrepancy by combining the measurements from the muon detector with those from the Auger fluorescence detector at $$10^{{17.5}}\, {\mathrm{eV}} $$ 1017.5eV and $$10^{{18}}\, {\mathrm{eV}} $$ 1018eV . We find that, for the models to explain the data, an increase in the muon density of $$38\%$$ 38% $$\pm 4\% (12\%)$$ ±4%(12%) $$\pm {}^{21\%}_{18\%}$$ ±18%21% for EPOS-LHC, and of $$50\% (53\%)$$ 50%(53%) $$\pm 4\% (13\%)$$ ±4%(13%) $$\pm {}^{23\%}_{20\%}$$ ±20%23% for QGSJetII-04, is respectively needed.

Abstract: A search for time-directional coincidences of ultra-high-energy (UHE) photons above 10 EeV with gravitational wave (GW) events from the LIGO/Virgo runs O1 to O3 is conducted with the Pierre Auger Observatory. Due to the distinctive properties of photon interactions and to the background expected from hadronic showers, a subset of the most interesting GW events is selected based on their localization quality and distance. Time periods of 1000 s around and 1 day after the GW events are analyzed. No coincidences are observed. Upper limits on the UHE photon fluence from a GW event are derived that are typically at ∼7 MeV cm ^−2 (time period 1000 s) and ∼35 MeV cm ^−2 (time period 1 day). Due to the proximity of the binary neutron star merger GW170817, the energy of the source transferred into UHE photons above 40 EeV is constrained to be less than 20% of its total GW energy. These are the first limits on UHE photons from GW sources.

Abstract: A catalog containing details of the highest-energy cosmic rays recorded through the detection of extensive air showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented with the aim of opening the data to detailed examination. Descriptions of the 100 showers created by the highest-energy particles recorded between 2004 January 1 and 2020 December 31 are given for cosmic rays that have energies in the range 78–166 EeV. Details are also given on a further nine very energetic events that have been used in the calibration procedure adopted to determine the energy of each primary. A sky plot of the arrival directions of the most energetic particles is shown. No interpretations of the data are offered.

Abstract: The Advanced Wakefield (AWAKE) Experiment is a proof-of-principle experiment demonstrating the acceleration of electron beams via proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration. AWAKE Run 2 aims to build on the results of Run 1 by achieving higher energies with an improved beam quality. As part of the upgrade to Run 2, the existing proton and electron beamlines will be adapted and a second plasma cell and new 150-MeV electron beamline will be added. The specification for this new 150-MeV beamline will be challenging as it will be required to inject electron bunches with micron-level beam size and stability into the second plasma cell while being subject to tight spatial constraints. In this paper, we describe the techniques used (e.g., numerical optimizers and genetic algorithms) to produce the design of this electron line. We present a comparison of the methods used in this paper with other optimization algorithms commonly used within accelerator physics. Operational techniques are also studied including steering and alignment methods utilizing numerical optimizers and beam measurement techniques employing neural networks. We compare the performance of algorithms for online optimization and beam-based alignment in terms of their efficiency and effectiveness.

Abstract: Abstract Elves are a class of transient luminous events, with a radial extent typically greater than 250 km, that occur in the lower ionosphere above strong electrical storms. We report the observation of 1,598 elves, from 2014 to 2016, recorded with unprecedented time resolution (100 ns) using the fluorescence detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger Cosmic‐Ray Observatory. The Auger Observatory is located in the Mendoza province of Argentina with a viewing footprint for elve observations of 3·106 km 2, reaching areas above the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, as well as the Córdoba region, which is known for severe convective thunderstorms. Primarily designed for ultrahigh energy cosmic‐ray observations, the Auger FD turns out to be very sensitive to the ultraviolet emission in elves. The detector features modified Schmidt optics with large apertures resulting in a field of view that spans the horizon, and year‐round operation on dark nights with low moonlight background, when the local weather is favorable. The measured light profiles of 18% of the elve events have more than one peak, compatible with intracloud activity. Within the 3‐year sample, 72% of the elves correlate with the far‐field radiation measurements of the World Wide Lightning Location Network. The Auger Observatory plans to continue operations until at least 2025, including elve observations and analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this observatory is the only facility on Earth that measures elves with year‐round operation and full horizon coverage.

9. Separation of soil respiration: a site-specific comparison of partition methods

Abstract: Without accurate data on soil heterotrophic respiration (Rh), assessments of soil carbon (C) sequestration rate and C balance are challenging to produce. Accordingly, it is essential to determine the contribution of the different sources of the total soil CO2 efflux (Rs) in different ecosystems, but to date, there are still many uncertainties and unknowns regarding the soil respiration partitioning procedures currently available. This study compared the suitability and relative accuracy of five different Rs partitioning methods in a subtropical forest: (1) regression between root biomass and CO2 efflux, (2) lab incubations with minimally disturbed soil microcosm cores, (3) root exclusion bags with hand-sorted roots, (4) root exclusion bags with intact soil blocks and (5) soil δ13C–CO2 natural abundance. The relationship between Rh and soil moisture and temperature was also investigated. A qualitative evaluation table of the partition methods with five performance parameters was produced. The Rs was measured weekly from 3 February to 19 April 2017 and found to average 6.1 ± 0.3 Mg C ha−1 yr−1. During this period, the Rh measured with the in situ mesh bags with intact soil blocks and hand-sorted roots was estimated to contribute 49 ± 7 and 79 ± 3 % of Rs, respectively. The Rh percentages estimated with the root biomass regression, microcosm incubation and δ13C–CO2 natural abundance were 54 ± 41, 8–17 and 61 ± 39 %, respectively. Overall, no systematically superior or inferior Rs partition method was found. The paper discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each technique with the conclusion that combining two or more methods optimizes Rh assessment reliability.

Abstract: Several previous studies have demonstrated the close relationship between peat dry bulk density and gravimetric moisture content. However, the basis for including peat ash (mineral) content or variation in the specific gravity of peat solids has not been covered. Here we present a theoretical basis for estimating peat dry bulk density for saturated peats from values of moisture content and, where available, ash content. The theory is evaluated using datasets obtained from Scotland, Ireland and Indonesia where both dry bulk density and peat moisture content have been measured. Deviations from theory are discussed in terms of peat gas volume and possible errors in the determination of peat dry bulk density.

Abstract: An overview of the multi-messenger capabilities of the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. The techniques and performance of searching for Ultra-High Energy neutrinos, photons and neutrons are described. Some of the most relevant results are reviewed, such as stringent upper bounds that were placed to a flux of diffuse cosmogenic neutrinos and photons, bounds placed on neutrinos emitted from compact binary mergers that were detected by LIGO and Virgo during their first and second observing runs, as well as searches for high energy photons and neutrons from the Galactic center that constrain the properties of the putative Galactic PeVatron, observed by the H.E.S.S. collaboration. The observation of directional correlations between ultra-high energy cosmic rays and either high energy astrophysical neutrinos or specific source populations, weighted by their electromagnetic radiation, are also discussed. They constitute additional multi-messenger approaches aimed at identifying the sources of high energy cosmic rays.

Abstract: Abstract Background Hip fracture is common, affecting 20% of women and 10% of men during their lifetime. The trajectory of patients’ recovery as they transition from the acute hospital setting to their usual residence is poorly understood. Recently, the use of activity trackers to monitor physical activity during recovery has been investigated as a way to explore this trajectory. Methods This prospective observational cohort study followed patients from hospital to home as they recovered from a hip fracture. Participants were recruited from a single centre and provided with a 3-axis logging accelerometer worn as a pendant, for 16 weeks from recruitment. Participants received monthly follow-up visits which included questions about wearing the monitor. Monthly activity monitor data were also downloaded. Participant activity was estimated from the monitor data using the calibrated “Euclidean Norm Minus One” (ENMO) metric. Polynomial mixed-effects modelling was used to evaluate the difference between the weekly activity trends of 2 groups of participants: those with and without independent mobility at 16 weeks (defined by whether aids or personal assistance were required to mobilise). Results Twenty-nine participants from 125 eligible patients were recruited. Of these, 19 (66%) reported being aware of wearing the monitor at least some of the time. Fourteen (48%) participants withdrew before study completion. Data for thirteen (45%) participants were of sufficient quantity to be included in the activity modelling procedure. Of these, 8 reported independent mobility at 16 weeks post-surgery, and 5 did not. By week 7, the weekly predicted mean ENMO ( ENMO ¯ W $$ {\overline{ENMO}}_W $$ ) values were significantly different between the two participant groups, demonstrating feasibility of the model’s ability to predict which patients will report independent mobility at 16 weeks. Conclusions This is the first study to our knowledge to investigate acceptability and feasibility of a pendant-worn activity monitor in this patient cohort. Acceptability of wearing the monitor and feasibility of recruitment and retention of participants were limited. Future research into the use of activity monitors in this population should use minimally intrusive devices which are acceptable to this population. Trials that have a protocol available were assessed for inclusion and those that use or plan to use routinely collected health data (RCHD) for at least one outcome were included. RCHD sources and outcome information were extracted. Of 216 RCTs, 102 (47%) planned to use RCHD. A RCHD source was the sole source of outcome data for at least one outcome in 46 (45%) of those 102 trials. The most frequent sources are Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and Office for National Statistics (ONS), with the most common outcome data to be extracted being on mortality, hospital admission, and health service resource use. Our study has found that around half of publicly funded trials in a UK cohort (NIHR HTA funded trials that had a protocol available) plan to collect outcome data from routinely collected data sources.

18. Visual Cultural Arts as a Gateway to Digital Literacy

Abstract: Societies increasingly use visual arts to communicate and teach about their cultures. Therefore, both visual and digital literacies are needed in order to better understand and appreciate cultural arts. With advances in reproduction and other technologies, visual messages cross traditionally defined cultures in different contexts, thus opening themselves to different cultural interpretations, further pointing out the need for visual and digital literacy to address the content, format, and context. The chapter uses a communications cycle framework to trace the intersection of visual and digital literacies, noting their universal and culturally-defined aspects. Because of the increased awareness of the importance of cultural identity and the impact of globalization, higher education needs to embrace visual cultural arts, both in terms of resources as well as instruction. The chapter provides several teaching strategies and resources to help students gain these important skills.

19. The Network Topology Metrics Contributing to Local-Area Frequency Stability in Power System Networks

Abstract: The power system network topology influences the system frequency response to power imbalance disturbances. Here, the objective is to find the network metric(s) contributing to frequency transient stability. The graph Laplacians of six 4-node network topologies are analysed using Spectral Graph Theory. For homogeneous network connections, we show that the node degree measure indicates node robustness. Based on these analytical results, the investigation expands to a 10-node network topology consisting of two clusters, which provide further insight into the spectral results. The research then involves a simulation of a power imbalance disturbance on three 20-node networks with different topologies based on node degree, where we link the node degree measure to imbalance disturbance propagation through Wave Theory. The results provide an intuitive understanding of the impact of network topology on power system frequency stability. The analytical and simulation results indicate that a node’s sensitivity to disturbances is partially due to its node degree, reactance from disturbance location, and the link it has to other higher degree nodes (hierarchical position in network topology). Testing of the analytical and simulation results takes place on the nonhomogeneous IEEE-14 bus and IEEE-39 bus networks. These results provide insights into optimal inertia placement to improve the frequency robustness of low-inertia power systems. The network topology, considering node degrees, influences the speed at which the disturbance impact propagates from the disturbance location and how fast-standing waves form. The topology thus contributes to how fast the energy in a disturbance dissipates to zero.

Abstract: Resident miscommunication and fractured team dynamics are associated with decreased quality of patient care. Interventions to improve resident communication and team coordination include behavioral assessments, which promote leadership and communication skills.In this retrospective review, general and plastic surgery residents voluntarily completed the DISC (dominance, influence, steadiness, and compliance) behavioral assessment. This validated tool is composed of four behavioral categories: dominance (D), influence (I), steadiness (S), and compliance (C). It is used to classify an individual's natural and adapted behavior styles. Results were anonymously collected and analyzed using the Pearson chi-square test.Of 94 surgery residents, 84 completed the survey (89 percent): 43 men and 41 women. Surgery residents combined had a significantly higher percentage of natural C's compared to the general population (23 percent versus 14 percent; p = 0.02). The majority of surgery residents adapted to C in the work environment (39 versus 36 percent; p = 0.85). There was a significant difference in male and female general surgery adapted D profiles (4 percent versus 23 percent; p = 0.05).The pressure of accuracy in surgical residency attracts natural C individuals. Residents without a natural C behavioral profile tend to adapt to the C profile. The ability to recognize behavior traits is crucial in surgical residency. Developing a better understanding of one's own behavior will provide insight into personal risk factors for miscommunication and inefficient team dynamics.

Abstract: A more sustainable dialysis and water filtration membrane has been developed, by using the new, safer, bio-based solvent Cyrene® in place of N-methyl pyrrolidinone (NMP). The effects of solvent choice, solvent evaporation time, the temperature of casting gel, and coagulation bath together with the additive concentration on porosity and pore size distribution were studied. The results, combined with infrared spectra, SEM images, porosity results, water contact angle (WCA), and water permeation, confirm that Cyrene® is better media to produce polyethersulfone (PES) membranes. New methods, Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) and NMR-based pore structure model, were applied to estimate the porosity and pore size distribution of the new membranes produced for the first time with Cyrene® and PVP as additive. Hansen Solubility Parameters in Practice (HSPiP) was used to predict polymer-solvent interactions. The use of Cyrene® resulted in reduced polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) loading than required when using NMP and gave materials with larger pores and overall porosity. Two different conditions of casting gel were applied in this study: a hot (70°C) and cold gel (17°C) were cast to obtain membranes with different morphologies and water filtration behaviours.

Incumbent laser, mechanical and chemical removal techniques are often not effective, are expensive or damage the substrate. Solvents are generally hazardous and not always effective because of the insolubility of the graffiti paint. This study proposes a simple strategy for safe and effective graffiti removal, using the bio-based, non-toxic and biodegradable solvent dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene™). The results showed that the type of substrate influenced the cleaning performance; in benchmark studies a non-porous substrate was easy to clean, while porous ceramic showed the presence of residual paint and yellowing when the conventional polar aprotic solvents were used. Cyrene, however, showed good removability of graffiti paint from both glazed and porous substrates, with little paint remaining in the pores of ceramic tiles. The paint suffered a reversible change in colour and a selective solubility of its components when using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone; no changes occurred when Cyrene was used. While N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and N,N′-dimethylformamide were only effective when neat, a Cyrene–water mixture showed some cleaning results. The performance of Cyrene was validated with Hansen solubility parameters and represents a greener and more sustainable solvent for paint removal.

Abstract: Context Dietary strategies may influence the fatty acid composition of sheep meat and ultimately its nutritional and sensory quality. Aim This study investigated the effects of silage to concentrate ratio and feeding duration on the concentration of intramuscular fatty acids and branched chain fatty acid in subcutaneous adipose tissue of lambs. Methods Pasture fed lambs were assigned in groups of 11 to one of nine dietary treatments consisting of silage to cereal concentrate at ratios (dry matter basis) of 100:0 (silage), 50:50 (silage:concentrate) or 0:100 (concentrate) for three feeding durations (36, 54 or 72 days) pre-slaughter. A 10th group of 11 lambs remained at pasture until slaughter. Fatty acid methyl esters were prepared using a microwave-assisted method and quantified by gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection. Results The concentration of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and proportions of C18:3n-3 and C18:2 cis-9 trans-11 decreased for mixed feed and/or concentrate treatments, but not for silage, from 36 to 72 days. The C18:2n-6 and n-6 PUFA concentrations increased for mixed feed and concentrate, but not for silage, from 36 to 72 days. The animals that remained at pasture had lower C18:2n-6 and n-6 PUFA than those receiving mixed feed for 72 days, concentrate for 54 days and concentrate for 72 days, but higher C18:3n-3, C18:2 cis-9 trans-11 and n-3 PUFA concentrations than the indoor finishing groups. The n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio was lower in pastured lambs compared to the other groups. 4-Methyloctanoic acid and 4-ethyloctanoic acid were higher in concentrate and mixed feed treatments than in silage while 4-methylnonanoic acid increased with increase in concentrate level in the diet. Conclusion The ratio of silage to concentrate in the diet and duration of feeding pre-slaughter influence the fatty acid composition of muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissue of lambs. Implications The results are important for lamb producers in understanding the nutritional and sensory implications of altering lamb diets.

Abstract: Buchwald–Hartwig amination is one of the most important methods for the synthesis of N-arylamines and is widely employed for the synthesis of potential pharmaceuticals, natural products, and other fine chemicals. The reaction usually uses a Pd(0) catalyst such as Pd(dba)2 and (±)-BINAP in the presence of a base, and toluene is the most commonly used solvent. However, there are significant safety, toxicological, and environmental hazards associated with the use of toluene. Herein, we demonstrate the successful application of 2,2,5,5-tetramethyloxolane (TMO), a solvent with a similar property profile to toluene, for Buchwald–Hartwig amination reactions for coupling a wide range of primary and secondary amines with aryl bromides. When NaOt-Bu was used as the base, similar yields were obtained in toluene and TMO. In contrast, using Cs2CO3, TMO outperformed toluene significantly for electron-deficient aryl bromides that could be susceptible to nucleophilic attack. To showcase the use of TMO as a solvent for Buchwald–Hartwig aminations, the synthesis of a key intermediate in the route to smoothened (SMO) receptor antagonist drug candidate SEN826 was successfully accomplished in TMO. Improved metrics and reduction in residual palladium in the isolated amines demonstrate further benefits in the substitution of toluene with TMO in Buchwald–Hartwig aminations.

43. Labeling Terms and Production Claims Influence Consumers’ Palatability Perceptions of Ground Beef

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate consumers’ palatability ratings of ground beef from the same source when provided information about the labeling prior to evaluation. Chubs (n=15) from the same production lot and day of 80% lean/20% fat ground beef were procured and fabricated into 151.2 g patties. Pairs of patties from each chub were randomly assigned to one consumer panel session and to 1 of 8 different labeling terms: all natural, animal raised without added antibiotics (WA), animal raised without added hormones (WH), fresh never frozen (FNF), grass-fed, locally sourced, premium quality, USDA organic (ORG), and a blank sample (NONE). Consumers (N=105) evaluated each sample on 0-to-100-point line scales for tenderness, juiciness, flavor liking, texture liking, overall liking, and purchasing intent and also evaluated each palatability trait as either acceptable or unacceptable. Prior to sample evaluation, the consumers were provided additional labeling information about the ground beef. Abstract: Historically, heterologous protein production has been challenging using the hyper-cellulolytic fungus, Trichoderma reesei. T. reesei is known for poor transformation efficiency, low homologous recombination frequency, and marginal screening systems for identification of successful transformants. In this work, we have applied the 2A-peptide multi-gene expression system to co-express four enzymes, which include three cellulases, a cellobiohydrolase (CBH1), an endoglucanase (EG1), and a β-D-glucosidase (BGL1); as well as the enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein, (eGFP), used here as a marker for monitoring expression levels. We designed a new chassis vector, pTrEno-4X-2A for this work. Expression of these cellulase enzymes was confirmed by real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR and immunoblot analysis. The activity of each of the cellulases was assessed using pNP glycosides and the chromogenic substrate, AZCL-HE-cellulose, which confirmed the functionality of the enzymes. Expression and activity of these enzymes was proportional to the level of eGFP fluorescence, thereby validating the reliability of this screening technique. Although all three cellulase proteins were successfully expressed, their expression levels varied significantly. Specifically, up to an 18-fold difference was observed between the first and the third gene within the 2A-peptide construct, based on protein quantitation. The availability of this new screening tool is expected to greatly impact multi-enzyme applications, such as production of complex commercial enzyme formulations and the study of metabolic pathway enzymes, especially those destined for cell free applications.

Abstract: ThePacific Marten is a mesocarnivore that is native to western North America, with a distribution that ranges from the boreal forests of southern British Columbia to the southern terminus of the Rocky Mountains in north-central New Mexico. Martens are considered a state-threatened species in New Mexico, and the southern extent of their range is unclear. We documented a sighting of a Pacific Marten at 35.835, -105.750, north-east of Santa Fe that is farther south than any confirmed marten sighting since 1884. It is unknown if this sighting represents the documentation of a population or just a lone individual. It is unlikely that marten populations would extend much farther south, as this is near the southern terminus of the Rocky Mountains. However, a systematic survey to determine the distribution of this southern population would inform conservation of Pacific Martens within the state.

Abstract: The enzymatic synthesis of polyesters in solventless systems is an environmentally friendly and sustainable method for synthetizing bio-derived materials. Despite the greenness of the technique, in most cases only short oligoesters are obtained, with limited practical applications or requiring further chemical processing for their elongation. In this work, we present a catalyst-free thermal upgrade of enzymatically synthesized oligoesters. Different aliphatic and aromatic oligoesters were synthesized using immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B (iCaLB) as the catalyst (70 °C, 24 h) yielding poly(1,4-butylene adipate) (PBA, Mw = 2200), poly(1,4-butylene isophthalate) (PBI, Mw = 1000), poly(1,4-butylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PBF, Mw = 600), and poly(1,4-butylene 2,4-pyridinedicarboxylate) (PBP, Mw = 1000). These polyesters were successfully thermally treated to obtain an increase in Mw of 8.5, 2.6, 3.3, and 2.7 folds, respectively. This investigation focused on the most successful upgrade, poly(1,4-butylene adipate), then discussed the possible effect of di-ester monomers as compared to di-acids in the thermally driven polycondensation. The herein-described two-step synthesis method represents a practical and cost-effective way to synthesize higher-molecular-weight polymers without the use of toxic metal catalysts such as titanium(IV) tert-butoxide, tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate, and in particular, antimony(IV) oxide. At the same time, the method allows for the extension of the number of reuses of the biocatalyst by preventing its exposure to extreme denaturating conditions.

Abstract: Utilisation of bio-derived platform molecules in polymer synthesis has advantages which are, broadly, twofold; to digress from crude oil dependence of the polymer industry and secondly to reduce the environmental impact of the polymer synthesis through the inherent functionality of the bio-derived platform molecules. Bulk polymerisation of bio-derived unsaturated di-acids has been employed to produce unsaturated polyester (UPEs) which have been analysed by GPC, TGA, DSC and NMR spectroscopy, advancing on the analysis previously reported. UPEs from the diesters of itaconic, succinic, and fumaric acids were successfully synthesised with various diols and polyols to afford resins of MN 480–477,000 and Tg of −30.1 to −16.6 °C with solubilities differing based on starting monomers. This range of properties allows for many applications and importantly due to the surviving Michael acceptor moieties, solubility and cross-linking can be specifically tailored, post polymerisation, to the desired function. An improved synthesis of itaconate and succinate co-polymers, via the initial formation of an itaconate bis-diol, is also demonstrated for the first time, resulting in significantly improved itaconate incorporation.

Ground beef chubs that were 80% lean/20% fat (n=15/panel type) were obtained, and 151.2 g patties were manufactured from the chubs. Chubs were assigned randomly to panels for 1 of 3 different panel types. The fat content panels had samples labeled as 90% lean/10% fat (90/10), 80% lean/20% fat (80/20), 73% lean/27% fat (73/27), lean, and extra lean. Price point samples were assigned to 1 of 5 different points: ultra-high, high, medium, low, and ultra-low. Primal panel samples were labeled as ground chuck, ground round, ground sirloin, and store ground. Each panel had one sample with no information given (NONE).
