The objective of this study was to develop a proof of concept for using off-the-shelf Red Green Blue-Depth (RGB-D) Microsoft Kinect cameras to objectively assess P8 rump fat (P8 fat; mm) and muscle score (MS) traits in Angus cows and steers. Data from low and high muscled cattle (156 cows and 79 steers) were collected at multiple locations and time points. The following steps were required for the 3-dimensional (3D) image data and subsequent machine learning techniques to learn the traits: 1) reduce the high dimensionality of the point cloud data by extracting features from the input signals to produce a compact and representative feature vector, 2) perform global optimization of the signatures using machine learning algorithms and a parallel genetic algorithm, and 3) train a sensor model using regression-supervised learning techniques on the ultrasound P8 fat and the classified learning techniques for the assessed MS for each animal in the data set. The correlation of estimating hip height (cm) between visually measured and assessed 3D data from RGB-D cameras on cows and steers was 0.75 and 0.90, respectively. The supervised machine learning and global optimization approach correctly classified MS (mean [SD]) 80 (4.7) and 83% [6.6%] for cows and steers, respectively. Kappa tests of MS were 0.74 and 0.79 in cows and steers, respectively, indicating substantial agreement between visual assessment and the learning approaches of RGB-D camera images. A stratified 10-fold cross-validation for P8 fat did not find any differences in the mean bias ( = 0.62 and = 0.42 for cows and steers, respectively). The root mean square error of P8 fat was 1.54 and 1.00 mm for cows and steers, respectively. Additional data is required to strengthen the capacity of machine learning to estimate measured P8 fat and assessed MS. Data sets for and continental cattle are also required to broaden the use of 3D cameras to assess cattle. The results demonstrate the importance of capturing curvature as a form of representing body shape. A data-driven model from shape to trait has established a proof of concept using optimized machine learning techniques to assess P8 fat and MS in Angus cows and steers.

Context Selection using visual muscle score (MS) has been proposed to increase carcass leanness (i.e. meat yield), without compromising eating quality. Aims The aim of the present study was to examine the impact that selection for divergent MS has on live animal, commercial carcass and carcass tissue weights by using computed tomography (CT) including Meat Standards Australia (MSA) index-predicted eating quality. Methods Data from 67 steers originating from three muscling lines, namely, low, high and heterozygous high (HighHet – heterozygous for the 821 del11 myostatin mutation), were used. Visual MS was assessed on all steers. All steers were slaughtered and the left-hand side of each carcass was processed with fat trimming limited to only that required for hygiene purposes and kidney fat was not removed. All carcasses were MSA graded and then boned-out into untrimmed boneless primals (e.g. rump, cube roll). A CT scan of each beef primal was processed with image analysis software to estimate lean and fat tissue weights. The following traits were analysed: MS, weaning and slaughter weights; commercial carcass traits, including cold carcass weight, rump fat, MSA rib fat, MSA eye-muscle area, MSA marble score and MSA index; and CT-scanned compositional carcass traits, including lean, fat and bone tissues (%) and lean:bone ratio. All data were analysed with a linear mixed-effects model using REML. Least-squares means for the three muscling lines are reported. Linear trends between MS and seven carcass traits, with and without the myostatin mutation, are presented graphically. Key results Muscling line effects (P < 0.05) were found for visual MS and carcass traits. Linear trends between MS and carcass traits with and without the myostatin mutation demonstrate that increases in MS (P = 0.24) did not compromise predictions of MSA index even though MSA marble score decreased (P = 0.026), but myostatin decreased MSA marble score and tended to decrease MSA index (P = 0.097). Increases in the MSA eye-muscle area were associated with increases in MS (P < 0.01), with little effect of myostatin. Increases in MS and the myostatin mutation were both associated with increases (P < 0.01) in lean tissue (%) and the lean:bone ratio, and decreases (P = 0.02) in fat tissue (%). Conclusions The results indicate selection for high MS can be used to increase carcass yield, without negatively affecting MSA index predictions of eating quality. Implications Producers can use MS to identify animals with higher yields to increase carcass leanness and decrease carcass waste fat, without compromising MSA index predictions of eating quality, but should do so while considering all traits that affect profitability, in particular marble score and its association with eating quality.

Aims We examine the average performance of Border Leicester (BL) flocks that are part of LAMBPLAN, Australia’s sheep performance recording and genetic evaluation system. We also summarise outcomes from the New South Wales Department of Primary Industry’s research on BL improvement, and discuss the performance required for the BL to continue to be a pivotal part of the Australian prime lamb industry. Key results Modest gains have been recorded in the BL in growth since 2000 and faecal egg counts have reduced, suggesting improved worm resistance. The net reproductive rate has slightly improved, while inbreeding continues to increase. In work conducted by the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, an improved BL flock, encompassing selection for multiple births and a broadening of the breed’s genetic base, had advantages over purebred BLs in many aspects of performance, including a 19.3% advantage in the net reproductive rate. Advantages in fertility were ~5%, litter size ~7% and lamb rearing ability ~5%. BL improved × Merino and (BL improved × BL) × Merino crossbred ewes also had advantages over traditional BL × Merino ewes in their joining performance when joined to Dorset rams. Conclusions Selection in the BL needs to emphasise traits in a manner consistent with their importance to commercial lamb production. Implications Embracing this selection and broadening the BL’s genetic base will assist the BL to maintain its place in the Australian lamb industry.

The real world contains many sources of natural variation. Useful simulation models of real-world problems, such as the optimal allocation of beef cattle into feedlot pens, need to take this into account. Monte Carlo simulation is the usual method of achieving this, using multiple model runs, each with a different set of randomly generated variables. However, when the goal is system optimisation, this approach can make the computation extremely intensive, and difficult for the optimisation of even moderately-sized models. This problem was addressed in an industry model of feedlot operations, where animals are selected and drafted into separate pens, and grown to the optimal weight and fat ranges in the pricing grid. For each pen, it is planned that the majority of the animals achieve this targeted region of the price grid, so that the number of discounted carcasses will be minimal. The main problem is that animals which appear reasonably similar at intake then display variable growth and fattening rates. Hence deterministic predictions are unrealistic, and stochasticity needs to be factored in. However this interferes with the efficient optimisation of this feedlot operation, which ultimately needs to be done 'real-time' (at animal induction), and on-site at the feedlot. Our solution to this dilemma was to transfer all of the modelled stochastic processes onto the evaluation side of this problem, by integrating over Normal distributions applied to the expected prices for each animal. This allows the optimisation runs to directly estimate the expected economic outcome using just one model evaluation for each trial management strategy. This process is illustrated with two case-studies, based on separate past intakes of animals into a commercial feedlot. For both intakes, the simulated results as reflected by the carcass values for the actual times on feed matched well with the observed values. Simulated results indicate that increases in profitability can be obtained both by altering the days on feed, and by better allocation of the animals to the pens. The overall predicted increase in profit per animal was $34 for the first intake, where the actual allocation of animals to the pens was approximately random (the order they were offloaded), and $20 for the second example where the animals had been allocated to pens on a more structured basis (by weights). This optimised allocation scheme appears to offer obvious improvements for feedlot operations, and is currently being trialed by a number of industry collaborators.

Genomic imprinting is the process whereby germline epigenetic events lead to parent-of-origin specific monallelic expression of a number of key mammalian genes. The imprinted gene Nesp is expressed from the maternal allele only and encodes for Nesp55 protein. In the brain, Nesp55 is found predominately in discrete areas of the hypothalamus and midbrain. Previously, we have shown that loss of Nesp55 gives rise to alterations in novelty-related behaviour. Here, we extend these findings and demonstrate, using the Nesp

Objective To determine the mode of inheritance of congenital proportionate dwarfism in Angus and Angus crossbred cattle, initially detected in two commercial beef herds in northern New South Wales. Design Matings of normal carrier sires to unrelated cows of diverse breeds, and of one carrier sire to his unaffected daughters. An unrelated Piedmontese bull was also mated to unaffected daughters of the carrier sires. Procedure Two carrier Angus bulls and nine unaffected daughters, all of whom were completely indistinguishable from normal animals, were purchased for controlled breeding studies under known nutritional and disease conditions. Affected and carrier individuals were examined for the presence of obvious chromosomal abnormalities. Results Angus dwarfism has been successfully reproduced under controlled experimental conditions over successive years using unrelated dams and is undoubtedly heritable. The high frequency of occurrence of affected individuals (23/61 = 0.38 +/- .06) among the progeny of matings of the Angus sires to unrelated females of diverse breeding is not compatible with recessive inheritance, because of the negligible frequency of proportionate dwarfism in the breeds of the dams. Both paternal and maternal transmission of the defect was demonstrated, so that imprinting in the strict sense of a gene that is only expressed when received from the male parent appears not to be involved. Tested individuals showed no evidence of gross chromosomal abnormality. Dominant autosomal inheritance with incomplete penetrance was indicated by the lack of expression of the defective gene in the two Angus sires and in three unaffected daughters who produced dwarf calves from matings to the Piedmontese bull. Conclusions The mode of inheritance is that of a single autosomal dominant gene with a penetrance coefficient of 0.75 +/- 0.12, estimated from the observed incidence of 23/61 affected offspring of the two carrier Angus bulls mated to unrelated dams. Simple genetic models involving either (i) an unstable mutant which changes at high frequency to the expressed dominant dwarfing allele during gametogenesis, or (ii) a dominant allele with penetrance determined by an unlinked modifying locus, are shown to be compatible with the experimental data. Both models indicate that penetrance of the dwarfing gene may possibly be higher in matings involving carrier daughters of the two Angus bulls.

Forty-two single-bearing and 42 twin-bearing mature Angus×Hereford cows were allocated, seven per cell to 3 replications of 2 stocking rates (3.2 cows/ha; medium stocking rate (MSR), and 3.8 cows/ha; high stocking rate (HSR)) to graze summer-active and winter-active pastures from late pregnancy to the weaning of their calves. Cow liveweights and growth of calves were recorded as well as estimates of pasture quantity and forage intake. Pasture quantity did not differ in the paddocks grazed by single- and twin-bearing cows during pregnancy, nor effectively did forage intake. Subsequently, intake was higher during mid-lactation especially with twin-rearing cows (25% higher than single-rearing cows at the MSR; 9% at the HSR). However, quantity of pasture decreased for twin-rearing cows and was less than that available to single-rearing cows as lactation progressed. Liveweights of twin- rearing cows decreased by 16% from late pregnancy to weaning at the MSR, and by 14% at the HSR, compared to decreases of 1% for single-rearing cows. Twin calves were lighter at birth, had slower growth rates, and were lighter at weaning than single calves. In spite of weaning smaller calves twinning increased the output (kg of calf weaned) per cow and per ha, and increased the efficiency (kg calf weaned per unit of forage eaten by the cow) over single calf production by 46% at the MSR and by 58% at the HSR. Twinning also increased the marginal returns from investment in high input pastures required by the enterprise. (Asian-Aust. J. Anim. Sci. 2005. Vol 18, No. 12 : 1735-1740)

The proportion of female lambs was previously higher when Merino dams were fed a diet high in omega-6 (n-6) based on oats and cottonseed meal compared with low in n-6 based on silage around mating. The effect of maternal diet on the reproductive success of the female offspring from these dams has not previously been examined. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the reproductive rate of Border Leicester × Merino ewes was higher when their Merino dams were previously fed a diet high in n-6 compared with low in n-6 around conception. Merino dams were fed diets based on either silage low in n-6 or oats and cottonseed meal high in n-6 fatty acids for ~40 days pre-mating only or 40 days pre-mating and 17 days post-mating in each of 2 years. The reproductive performance (proportion pregnant and fetuses conceived) of their Border Leicester × Merino ewe offspring born in each year was examined at their first mating. Ewe lamb birthweight and fat score at the time of mating was not significantly affected by the diet fed to their dams around mating. The proportion of Border Leicester × Merino ewes pregnant was not different, however the number of fetuses per ewe was significantly (P = 0.002) higher when their dams were fed a High n-6 compared with a Low n-6 diet around mating (1.64 ± 0.05 vs 1.42 ± 0.05 fetuses/ewe pregnant, respectively). The reproduction rate of ewes may be affected by diet fed to their dams in the peri-conceptional period and could be associated with fetal programming.

Recombination hotspots are small chromosomal regions, where meiotic crossover events happen with high frequency. Recombination is initiated by a double-strand break (DSB) that requires the intervention of the molecular repair mechanism. The DSB repair mechanism may result in the exchange of homologous chromosomes (crossover) and the conversion of the allelic sequence that breaks into the one that does not break (biased gene conversion). Biased gene conversion results in a transmission advantage for the allele that does not break, thus preventing recombination and rendering recombination hotspots transient. How is it possible that recombination hotspots persist over evolutionary time (maintaining the average chromosomal crossover rate) when they are self-destructive? This fundamental question is known as the recombination hotspot paradox and has attracted much attention in recent years. Yet, that attention has not translated into a fully satisfactory answer. No existing model adequately explains all aspects of the recombination hotspot paradox. Here, we formulate an intragenomic conflict model resulting in Red Queen dynamics that fully accounts for all empirical observations regarding the molecular mechanisms of recombination hotspots, the nonrandom targeting of the recombination machinery to hotspots and the evolutionary dynamics of hotspot turnover.

Unlike in sheep, in which immunization against androstenedione causes mild and reasonably controlled increased ovulation rate, in similar studies cattle showed highly variable responses ranging from increased ovulation rate and fertility through to anovulation/anoestrous or superovulation. As a consequence, interest in manipulation of ovulation rate through this approach has declined and is now focused on immunological manipulation of endogenous inhibin following successful studies in sheep. Studies have concentrated on developing a prototype inhibin-based vaccine to be used for twinning in the Australian beef industry. The prototype vaccine (with recombinant ovine inhibin-alpha.3 fusion protein and Montanide:Marcol adjuvant) has proved to be very potent and control of the degree of ovarian stimulation has not been possible. The proportion of cattle with increased ovulation rate after inhibin immunization is affected by timing of booster vaccination within the ovarian cycle, time after vaccination, vaccine formulation and possibly genotype. Physiological studies show that cattle responding to the inhibin vaccine have increased plasma inhibin binding of native bovine inhibin, high plasma FSH concentrations, greater numbers of large (or = 8 mm) follicles and fewer small (5 mm) follicles during the preovulatory wave of follicular development compared with control or non-responding animals. Significant correlations among the response parameters (i.e. inhibin binding, plasma FSH concentrations, number of large follicles and ovulation rate) have been demonstrated. The results indicate that greater understanding of the various processes of folliculogenesis will be necessary to achieve a controlled increase in ovulation rate in cattle.

Heterotrimeric GTP-binding proteins (G-proteins) serve many different signal transduction pathways. Phosducin, a 28-kDa phosphoprotein, is expressed in a variety of mammalian cell types and blocks activation of several classes of G-proteins. Phosphorylation of phosducin by cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase prevents phosducin-mediated inhibition of G-protein GTPase activity (Bauer, P. H., Müller, S., Puzicha, M., Pippig, S., Obermaier, B., Helmreich, E. J. M., and Lohse, M. J. (1992) Nature 358, 73-76). In retinal rods, phosducin inhibits transducin (Gt) activation by binding its beta gamma subunits. While rod phosducin is phosphorylated in the dark and dephosphorylated after illumination (Lee, R.-H., Brown, B. M., and Lolley, R. N. (1984) Biochemistry 23, 1972-1977), the significance of these reactions is still unclear. The data presented here permit a more precise characterization of phosducin function and the consequences of its phosphorylation. Dephosphophosducin blocked binding of the Gt alpha 1 subunit to activated rhodopsin in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of Gt beta gamma, whereas phosphophosducin did not. Surprisingly, the binding affinity of phosphophosducin for Gt beta gamma was not significantly reduced compared with the binding affinity of dephosphophosducin. However, the association of phosducin with Gt beta gamma in a size exclusion column matrix was dependent on the phosphorylation state of phosducin. Moreover, the ability of phosducin to compete with Gt alpha for binding to Gt beta gamma was also dependent on the phosphorylation state of phosducin. No interaction was found between phosducin and Gt alpha. These data indicate that phosducin decreases rod responsiveness by binding to the beta gamma subunits of Gt and preventing their interaction with Gt alpha, thereby inhibiting Gt alpha activation by the activated receptor. Moreover, phosphorylation of phosducin blocks its ability to compete with Gt alpha for binding to Gt beta gamma.

Angus cattle that had been divergently selected for Low and High post-weaning residual feed intake (RFI) were used in two projects to evaluate early-life reproductive performance and onset of puberty in females. In the first project, data on the 1999-born females (n = 64) were evaluated for weight, subcutaneous fat (P8 fat depth) and reproductive performance over two breeding cycles. These females that were the result of 1.0–2.5 (mean of 1.8) generations of selection, had mean (±s.e.) post-weaning RFI of –0.82 ± 0.19 kg/day and 0.57 ± 0.18 kg/day for the Low and High RFI selection lines, respectively. In the second project, ultrasonography was used to scan the ovaries of the 2008-born heifers (n = 121) on four occasions following weaning. In these heifers the presence of corpus luteum provided evidence of ovulation, and hence the commencement of onset of puberty. The average of the estimated breeding value (EBV) for RFI of the parents of the Low RFI and the High RFI selection line heifers were –0.72 ± 0.05 and 0.37 ± 0.03 kg/day, respectively. In the first project, no significant selection line differences were evident for weight, age at first mating, pregnancy and calving rates (percentage of females that were pregnant, or the percentage that calved out of the total number used for mating), calf birthweight and weight of calf born per female exposed to bull. Females from the Low RFI line had significantly (P < 0.05) lower P8 fat depth relative to their High RFI contemporaries at most of the measurement dates (e.g. 9.2 ± 0.5 versus 12.0 ± 0.5 mm at the start of first mating). Low RFI females also calved significantly (P < 0.05) later in the calving season than High RFI females (35.7 ± 3.0 versus 27.6 ± 2.4 days). The results indicate that there is a delayed pregnancy date during the first mating season leading to a later calving date for the Low RFI heifers. The later first calving date was then maintained at subsequent calving. The later calving, however, did not impact on pregnancy and calving rates. In the second project, it was observed that irrespective of selection line, heifers that had attained onset of puberty had significantly (P < 0.05) greater P8 fat depth than those that had not. Hence the expectation was that, relative to High RFI heifers, the Low RFI heifers with their lower P8 fat, will attain onset of puberty at a slightly older age. This expected trend was observed but the difference was not significant, and further investigations are recommended.

The steer progeny of sires genetically diverse for fatness and meat yield were grown at different rates from weaning to feedlot entry and effects on growth, carcass and meat-quality traits were examined. The present paper, the second of a series, reports the effects of genetic and growth treatments on carcass traits. A total of 43 sires, within three 'carcass class' categories, defined as high potential for meat yield, marbling or both traits, was used. Where available, estimated breeding values for the carcass traits of retail beef yield (RBY%) and intramuscular fat (IMF%) were used in selection of the sires, which were drawn from Angus, Charolais, Limousin, Black Wagyu and Red Wagyu breeds, to provide a range of carcass sire types across the three carcass classes. Steer progeny of Hereford dams were grown at either conventional (slow: ~0.5 kg/day) or accelerated (fast: ~0.7 kg/day) rates from weaning to feedlot entry weight, with group means of ~400 kg. Accelerated and conventionally grown groups from successive calvings were managed to enter the feedlot at similar mean feedlot entry weights at the same time for the 100-day finish under identical conditions. Faster-backgrounded groups had greater fat levels in the carcass than did slower-backgrounded groups. Dressing percentages and fat colour were unaffected by growth treatment, whereas differences in ossification score and meat colour were explained by age at slaughter. There were significant effects of sire type for virtually all carcass traits measured in the progeny. Differences in hot standard carcass weight showed a clear advantage to European types, with variable outcomes for the Angus and Wagyu progeny. Sire selection by estimated breeding values (within the Angus breed) for yield and/or fat traits resulted in expected differences in the progeny for those traits. There were large differences in both meat yield and fatness among the types of greatest divergence in genetic potential for those traits, with the Black Wagyu and the Angus IMF clearly superior for IMF%, and the European types for RBY%. The Angus IMF progeny performed as well as that of the Black Wagyu for all fatness traits. Differences in RBY% among types were generally reflected by similar differences in eye muscle area. Results here provide guidelines for selecting sire types to target carcass traits for specific markets. The absence of interactions between growth and genetic treatments ensures that consistent responses can be expected across varying management and production systems.

The present experiment, ‘Regional Combinations’, examined growth, and carcass- and meat-quality traits in the progeny of sires genetically diverse for fatness and meat yield when grown at different rates from weaning to feedlot entry. The present paper is the first of several papers describing results from the New South Wales site, one of four in the project. It reports the effects on growth and body composition of steers during backgrounding and feedlot finishing phases. A total of 43 sires within three carcass-class categories, defined as high potential for meat yield, for marbling or for both traits, was used, based on estimated breeding values for retail beef yield and intramuscular fat. Sires were drawn from Angus, Charolais, Limousin, Black Wagyu and Red Wagyu breeds, providing a range of carcass sire types across the three carcass classes. Matings were by artificial insemination to Hereford dams from a single herd. Steer progeny were grown at conventional (slow: ~0.5 kg/day) or accelerated (fast: ~0.7 kg/day) rates from weaning to feedlot entry weight, targeting group means of 400 kg. Accelerated and conventionally grown groups from successive calvings entered the feedlot at similar entry liveweights at the same time, then having identical management during the 100-day finishing phase before slaughter. Within finishing cohorts, fast backgrounding growth resulted in increased subcutaneous fatness at feedlot entry in steers of all carcass types. Slow growth during backgrounding resulted in faster (compensatory) growth in the feedlot in all classes and sire types. This increased the deposition of fat in slow-backgrounded steers compared with that in fast-backgrounded steers during feedlotting, and thus reduced the difference between the groups in P8 and rib fat at feedlot exit. However, there did appear to be an advantage in the level of compensation in the feedlot in favour of those sire types with a genetic propensity for faster growth. Backgrounding growth rate affected body composition and the rate of weight gain during finishing. Faster growth produced more subcutaneous fat during both backgrounding and finishing. Steer progeny groups clearly showed the expected responses in growth and body composition, on the basis of the genetic potential of their sires.

This paper is a foreword to a series of papers commissioned on ‘the impact of science on the beef industry’, where the Beef CRC-related collaborative scientific work of Professor Bernard Michael Bindon will be reviewed. These papers will be presented in March 2006, as part of a ‘festschrift’ to recognise his wider contributions to the Australian livestock industries for over 40 years. Bindon’s career involved basic and applied research in many areas of reproductive physiology, genetics, immunology, nutrition, meat science and more recently genomics, in both sheep and cattle. Together with his collaborators, he made large contributions to animal science by improving the knowledge of mechanisms regulating reproductive functions and in elucidating the physiology and genetics of high fecundity livestock. His collaborative studies with many colleagues of the reproductive biology and genetics of the Booroola Merino were amongst the most extensive ever conducted on domestic livestock. He was instrumental in the development of immunological techniques to control ovulation rate and in examining the application of these and other techniques to increase beef cattle reproductive output. This paper tracks his investigations and achievements both within Australia and internationally. In the later stages of his career he was the major influence in attracting a large investment in Cooperative Research Centres for the Australian cattle industry, in which he directed a multi-disciplinary approach to investigate, develop and disseminate science and technology to improve commercial cattle productivity.

As a component of the second term of the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Cattle and Beef Quality, a project to further test and validate the effects of varying nutritional growth paths pre-finishing and slaughter on cattle of varying genetic potential for meat yield and eating quality was designed and implemented. This project, ‘Regional Combinations’, was a multi-site experiment, using Bos taurus cattle generated at 4 locations across southern Australia. The design of imposing different growth paths between weaning and finishing on cattle with specific genetic potential is common across sites. Treatment and interaction effects on beef production and meat quality were examined within and across sites. This paper describes the experimental designs, generation of experimental cattle at the various sites and the measurements, collection and storage of the data for multi-site analyses.

Data on 185 Angus cows were used to study the effect of divergent selection for residual feed intake on maternal productivity across 3 mating seasons, starting from 2000. The cows were the result of 1 to 2.5 generations of selection (mean of 1.5), and differed in estimated breeding value for residual feed intake by 0.8 kg/day. In general, cows lost subcutaneous fat (measured 2 times a year) during the period when they were nursing calves, and gained fat thereafter. No significant selection line differences in fatness were observed except for those measured at the start of the 2000 (10.8 ± 0.4 v. 9.3 ± 0.4 mm), 2001 (11.3 ± 0.4 v. 9.8 ± 0.4 mm) and 2002 (7.0 ± 0.5 v. 5.7 ± 0.5 mm) mating seasons, where high residual feed intake cows had significantly (P

Large numbers of weaner calves destined for meat production in Australia are born to cows grazing low quality pastures and have low growth rates to weaning. A study was undertaken in a New South Wales subtropical coastal area (Grafton, 29°38′S, 152°54′E) to increase these growth rates by supplementing cows to mid lactation and/or their calves up to weaning. This paper reports on the effects of these supplementation regimes on cow production. Cows were either not supplemented or supplemented with cottonseed meal twice-a-week at 4.2 kg/head over 145 days, commencing before the expected start of calving. Calves, depending on their treatment group, either had unrestricted access to a ‘creep’ containing a high-energy, high-protein pellet given from 75 or 150 days old, or had no access at all to ‘creep’ feed. However, all cows and their calves had access to mineral blocks. Cottonseed meal-supplemented cows were heavier (408 v. 362 kg) and had higher condition scores (3.3 v. 2.9 units) than non-supplemented cows when weighed and scanned in November 1996, after all cows had calved, and they maintained these differences until April 1997 when calves were weaned. There was a trend for cows, whose calves had access to a ‘creep’ from 150 days old, to gain weight towards the end of lactation whereas cows from other treatment groups lost weight. Non-supplemented cows had a 3-fold greater daily intake of mineral blocks than cottonseed meal cows (178 v. 61 g/cow) providing them with an additional 9.8 g phosphorus/cow. Cottonseed meal cows were observed to have fewer grazing incidences (60 v. 75% of activities) during supplementation than non-supplemented cows, with grazing instances increasing for all cows during lactation. Cottonseed meal cows whose calves had access to ‘creep’ feed continued to have fewer grazing incidences (74 v. 90%) than other cows 70 days post-supplementation. Milk yield was higher in cottonseed meal cows than in non-supplemented cows (4.8 v. 4.0 kg/day). Following a synchronised insemination program, at the end of cottonseed meal supplementation, the pregnancy rate of formerly cottonseed meal-supplemented cows was twice that (40 v. 20%) of non-supplemented cows. The combination of cottonseed meal supplements and macrominerals from blocks improved cow liveweight, condition score, milk yield and fertility, and was a successful strategy for increasing production from low quality pastures.

A series of 10 farm trials was conducted in which the lambing performance of ewes immunised against polyandroalbumin was compared with that of untreated ewes in the same flock. The trials show that polyandroalbumin treatment is a reliable method of increasing lambing and tailing percentages in New Zealand flocks. An average of 39 extra lambs born per 100 ewes tupped was achieved on farms where ewes were given two treatments about four weeks apart and rams were introduced 18-26 days after the second dose. On farms where rams were introduced less than 12 days after this booster injection an average of 19 extra lambs born per 100 ewes tupped resulted. On farms where rams were introduced at 18-26 days post booster injection an average of 35 extra lambs were tailed for every 100 ewes tupped. The response for immunization increased in direct relation to the liveweight of the ewes at tupping.

The effectiveness of selenium pellets in grazing Merino sheep was examined by comparing the selenium status of treated and untreated animals over a 13 month period. The selenium status of treated sheep, as measured by blood glutathione peroxidase levels, had reached a maximum 3 months after treatment and there was a marked decline between 5 and 13 months. All pellets were recovered from treated sheep at slaughter this confirmed that the observed decline was not due to a loss of pellets. In a separate study sheep were slaughtered 14 months after treatment and some of the recovered pellets were readministered to sheep maintained on a low selenium diet. The selenium status of the sheep receiving recovered pellets remained low. This bioassay technique indicated that there was little available selenium released from these pellets. The selenium status of sheep given previously unused pellets was declining after 18 weeks.

Relationships of ram serving capacity (a measure of serving frequency in pen tests), testis diameter, liveweight, breed and age with flock fertility were studied in 40 rams joined individually for 7 days at high ewe:ram ratios. Rams were either Border Leicester, BLI (a high prolificacy line derived from the Border Leicester and Merino and since released as the Glen Vale breed) or BLI x Border Leicester, and aged either 1.5 or 2.5 years. Joinings were over 2 periods, 2-9 April or 16-23 April. Breed, age, period and interaction effects were also examined. On average (± s.e.), the number of ewes with mating marks in 7 days increased by 2.03 ± 0.52 ( P < 0.001) per serve per hour of serving capacity and by 0.40 ± 0.18 ( P < 0.05) per kg liveweight.
