Soil acidity is one of the main factors limiting agricultural production due to high aluminum (Al(3+)) saturation in soil. Campomanesia pubescens (Mart. ex DC.) O. Berg, popularly known as “gabiroba”, is a species of Myrtaceae family and typical of Brazilian Cerrado. The aim of this study was to evaluate the root growth and anatomical structure of C. pubescens roots, subjected to different concentrations of Al(3+), grown in a simple and complete solution as culture form. This experiment was performed with seedlings cultivated hydroponically using a simple and complete solution. The simple nutrient solution was carried out using 0.1 mM of Ca (CaCl(2).2H(2)O) and five concentrations of Al in the form of Al(2)(SO(4))3.18H(2)O, while the complete nutrient solution of low ionic strength was conducted using 0.5 mM of N (NH(4)NO(3)), 0.2 mM of Ca (CaCl(2).H(2)O), 0.2 mM of Mg (MgSO(4).7H(2)O), 0.5 mM of K (K(2)SO(4)), 0.1 mM of P (NaH(2)PO(4).2H(2)O), 10 μM of Fe (FeNa) EDTA, 0.4 μM of Mn (MnSO(4).H(2)O), 0.16 μM of Zn (ZnSO(4)), 0.04 μM of Cu (CuSO(4)), 0.5 μM of Mo (MoO(3)), and 0.04 μM of Co (CoSO(4).7H(2)O).The experiment was a factorial design (2×5) with two nutrient solutions (single and complete) and five aluminum concentrations (0, 150, 300, 600 and 1200 μmol L-1). It was observed that both in simple and complete nutrient solution the rate of root elongation and root growth decreased with increasing Al(3+) concentration. At the concentration of 300 μmol L-1, were observed cellular disorganization and rupture of the epidermis. The presence of aluminum inside the vascular cells may indicate some mechanism of transport to other parts of the plant. It was concluded that Campomanesia pubescens showed sensitivity towards high Al(3+) concentrations, indicating that the establishment of these plants can be compromised in acidic soils with toxic concentrations of Al(3+).

The objective of this study was to evaluate the internal morphology of seeds of Campomanesia pubescens (Mart. ex DC.) O. Berg with varying water content through X-ray image analysis, and correlate the images with the germination of these seeds. Fruits were collected in Jataí, Goiás, Brazil, and taken to the Seed Laboratory of the Federal Institute Goiano, Rio Verde Campus, where they were processed and the seeds were extracted. To establish the predetermined water content (43%, 37%, 34%, 31%, and 28% wet basis), seeds with an initial water content of 43% were kept in an oven with forced air circulation at a temperature of 40 °C until they reached the predetermined water content levels. Next, the seeds were placed in acrylic holders with double-sided tape and transported to the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), where they were exposed to different intensities of radiation. The X-ray test was conducted with 200 seeds per treatment, and images of the internal structures of the seeds were evaluated. The seeds were returned to the Seed Laboratory of the Federal Institute Goiano, Rio Verde Campus, where the germination test was initiated. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a factorial design (5 × 4), in which there were five water content levels and four seed classes, with four replications. The X-ray test was efficient in the identification of filled, malformed, damaged and empty seeds, which germination rate above 50% in the filled seeds. This visualization of the internal morphology of the seed can be useful to select seeds of better quality, improving the percentage of germination of C. pubescens seeds. Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a morfologia interna de sementes de Campomanesia pubescens (Mart. ex DC.) O.Berg com diferentes teores de água por meio de análise de imagens de raios-X, e correlacionar as imagens com a germinação dessas sementes. Os frutos foram coletados no município de Jataí, Goiás, Brasil, e levados ao Laboratório de Sementes do Instituto Federal Goiano, Campus Rio Verde, onde foram processados e as sementes foram extraídas. Para estabelecer o teor de água predeterminado (43%, 37%, 34%, 31% e 28% base úmida), as sementes com um teor inicial de água de 43% foram mantidas em estufa com circulação de ar induzida, a uma temperatura de 40 °C até atingirem os níveis de conteúdo de água predeterminados. Em seguida, as sementes foram colocadas em suportes acrílicos com fita dupla face e transportadas para a Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA), onde foram expostas a diferentes intensidades de radiação. O teste de raios-X foi realizado com 200 sementes por tratamento, e imagens das estruturas internas das sementes foram avaliadas. As sementes foram devolvidas ao Laboratório de Sementes do Instituto Federal Goiano, Campus Rio Verde, onde foi iniciado o teste de germinação. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial (5 × 4), no qual foram encontrados cinco níveis de umidade e quatro classes de sementes, com quatro repetições. O teste de raios-X foi eficiente na identificação de sementes preenchidas, malformadas, danificadas e vazias, com taxas de germinação acima dos 50% nas sementes cheias. Essa visualização das morfologia interna da semente pode ser útil para selecionar sementes de melhor qualidade, melhorando a porcentagem de germinação das sementes de C. pubescens.

Microorganisms have been efficiently used for the biological control of phytopathogens through the production of antimicrobial substances. However, the objectives of this work were: to study the germination of Butia purpurascens Glassman and Butia archeri Glassman seeds in different substrates, to select and identify the endophytic and rhizospheric bacterial isolates of B. purpurascens and B. archeri, and to perform antibiosis tests based on the isolated microorganisms of these tree species. No difference was found between the cultivation substrates for the percentages of germination, hard seeds, and fungal contamination in the B. purpurascens seeds. The Bacillus subtilis isolated showed the best capacity for suppressing the growth of the two deteriorative fungi tested in B. purpurascens seeds. No difference was found for inhibition of the growth of Aspergillus niger fungus (deteriorative fungus of B. archeri seeds) between the microorganisms with Bacillus sp. and Brevibacillus brevis compared to the control. In the microbiolization of B. purpurascens and B. archeri seeds performed with microbiological solutions produced from the endophytic and rhizospheric strains of Bacillus sp., no differences were observed in the percentages of germination and contamination by fungi. For B. archeri seeds, there was contamination by fungi and bacteria after one day of cultivation, primarily in the regions with lesions caused by the extraction and scarification process. Resumo Microorganismos específicos tem sido usados eficientemente para o controle biológico de fitopatógenos através da produção de substâncias antimicrobianas. Portanto, os objetivos deste estudo foram: estudar a germinação de sementes de Butia purpurascens Glassman e Butia archeri Glassman em diferentes substratos; selecionar e identificar isolados bacterianos rizosféricos e endofíticos de B. purpurascens e B. archeri, e realizar testes de antibiose a partir de microorganismos isolados dessas espécies arbóreas. Não houve diferença entre os substratos de cultivo para as porcentagens de germinação, de sementes duras e de contaminação por fungos nas sementes de B. purpurascens. O isolado bacteriano Bacillus subtilis apresentou melhor capacidade de supressão do crescimento dos dois fungos deterioradores testados nas sementes de B. purpurascens. Não foi encontrada diferença para a inibição do crescimento do fungo Aspergillus niger (fungo deteriorador de sementes de B. archeri) entre os microorganismos com Bacillus sp. e Brevibacillus brevis em comparação ao controle. Na microbiolização das sementes de B. purpurascens e B. archeri realizada com soluções microbiológicas produzidas a partir de cepas endofíticas e rizosféricas de Bacillus sp. não foram observadas diferenças na porcentagem de germinação e contaminação por fungos. Para B. archeri houve contaminação por fungos e bactérias após um dia de cultivo, principalmente nas regiões de lesão proporcionadas pelo processo de extração e escarificação.

Baccharis trimera plants, grown in soil containing 0, 5, 10, 20, or 30 percent (w/w) manure in greenhouse experiments, had improved plant color and growth (increased height, branching, and number of nodes) at the higher nutrient levels as compared with the control without the addition of manure. Generally, the addition of chemical fertilizer to the manure-containing media further increased yields as compared with yields having only manure. The addition of chemical fertilizers to manure-containing pots, however, did not increase the concentration of essential oil in plant tissue. Oil yields were the highest, however, in plants having both manure and chemical fertilizer due to the increased biomass production. No differences in the essential oil constituents were observed between plants grown with or without fertilizer.

Three cases of intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) of the uterus, a rare benign smooth-muscle tumor, are described. A preoperative diagnosis of IVL was not made in any of the patients, all of which presented with a pelvic mass with the presumptive diagnosis of leiomyoma. Surgical exploration confirmed the presence of uterine mass and two of the three cases showed extra-uterine extension into the ovarian or uterine veins. Histological examination demonstrated a fascicular pattern of bland spindle-shaped smooth-muscle cells, which extended to veins inside the myometrium or to extrauterine veins. This was confirmed by immunohistochemical stain for desmin and factor VIII. Despite their histological benignity, these lesions have a tendency to metastasize and are closely related to the conditions called "benign metastasizing leiomyoma" and "intracaval mass and cardiac extension". The primary treatment of IVL is hysterectomy and excision of any extrauterine tumor, when technically feasible. Anti-estrogenic therapy has been suggested as potentially useful in controlling of unresectable tumor. According to the literature, the follow-up must be long and periodic postoperative ultrasonic or magnetic nuclear resonance imaging studies may be useful in detecting growth of residual intravascular tumor.
