In 2016 we have upgraded the COMPASS RICH by novel gaseous photon detectors based on MPGD technology. Four new photon detectors, covering a total active area of 1.5 m 2, have been installed in order to cope with the challenging efficiency and stability requirements of the COMPASS physics programme. The new detector architecture consists in a hybrid MPGD combination: two layers of THGEMs, the first of which also acts as a reflective photocathode thanks to CsI coating, are coupled to a bulk Micromegas on a pad-segmented anode. These detectors are the first application in an experiment of MPGD-based single photon detectors. Presently, we are further developing the MPGD-based PDs to make them adequate for a setup at the future EIC collider. All aspects of the COMPASS RICH-1 Photon Detectors upgrade are presented: R&D, engineering, mass production, QA and performance; the on-going development for collider application is also presented.

We report the performance of a 10 atm Xenon/trimethylamine time projection chamber (TPC) for the detection of X-rays (30 keV) and gamma-rays (0.511-1.275 MeV) in conjunction with the accurate tracking of the associated electrons. When operated at such a high pressure and in 1%-admixtures, trimethylamine (TMA) endows Xenon with an extremely low electron diffusion (1.3 +-0.13 mm-sigma (longitudinal), 0.8 +-0.15 mm-sigma (transverse) along 1 m drift) besides forming a convenient Penning-Fluorescent mixture. The TPC, that houses 1.1 kg of gas in its active volume, operated continuously for 100 live-days in charge amplification mode. The readout was performed through the recently introduced microbulk Micromegas technology and the AFTER chip, providing a 3D voxelization of 8mm x 8mm x 1.2mm for approximately 10 cm/MeV-long electron tracks. This work was developed as part of the R&D program of the NEXT collaboration for future detector upgrades in the search of the 0bbnu decay in 136Xe, specifically those based on novel gas mixtures. Therefore we ultimately focus on the calorimetric and topological properties of the reconstructed MeV-electron tracks. The TPC, that houses 1.1 kg of gas in its fiducial volume, operated continuously for 100 live-days in charge amplification mode. The readout was performed through the recently introduced microbulk Micromegas technology and the AFTER chip, providing a 3D voxelization of 8mm×8mm×1.2mm for approximately 10 cm/MeV-long electron tracks. Resolution in energy ( ε ) at full width half maximum (R) inside the fiducial volume ranged from R=14.6% (30 keV) to R=4.6%(1.275MeV) . A seven year-long R&D programme has been performed and the resulting detector architecture is a hybrid MPGD including two THick GEM (THGEM) multiplication stages followed a MICROMEGAS. The first THGEM board forms the photocathode support: its upper face is CsI coated. The properties of THGEM-based photocathodes have been studied in details. The two THGEM layers act as pre-amplification stages and, thanks to a staggered configuration, namely by the misalignment of the holes of the two THGEMs, the electron shower produced in the pre-amplification phase is distributed onto a larger surface portion of the following MICROMEGAS unit, where the final multiplication takes place: it is so possible to operate at gains as high as 105 and more even in radioactive environments. COMPASS RICH-1 is a large-size Cherenkov imaging counter with gaseous radiator for hadron identification up to 50 GeV/c. The construction of a set of large-size (unit size: 60×60 cm2) gaseous photon detectors based on the hybrid MPGD architecture for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1 is ongoing and the upgraded detector will be in operation in 2016. The R&D studies, the engineering aspects and the construction challenges are presented.

An extensive material screening process is underway for several years based mainly on gamma-ray spectroscopy using ultra-low backgroundgermanium detectors in Canfranc but also on mass spectrometry techniques like GDMS and ICPMS. Components from shielding, pressure vessel, electroluminescence and high voltage elements and energy and tracking readout planes have been analyzed, helping in the final design of the experiment and in the construction of the background model. The latest measurements carried out will be presented and the implication on NEXT of their results will be discussed. Cherenkov imaging counters requiring large photosensitive areas, the capability to stand high rates and to operate in magnetic field environments could benefit from the use of micropattern gas detectors based on THick Gaseous Electron Multiplier (THGEM) coupled to a solid state CsI photo-cathode. Nevertheless, the ions produced in the charge multiplication processes, which end up in the CsI photocathode Ion Back Flow (IBF) compromise the detector performance: fast ageing of the CsI photocathode, as well as electron extraction resulting in spurious signals and eventual discharges can occur. To avoid and limit these undesired events, several configurations of THGEM based detectors were considered. Some changing the whole detector geometry by changing the relative position of individual THGEMs to take advantage of the microscopic diffusion properties of electrons and ions. One other configuration changing directly the geometry of the THGEM itself to better create an ion trap, the THCOBRA, is also studied. In this work, experimental and simulation studies of these configurations is performed, particularly concerning IBF and gain. Finite element method calculations and Monte-Carlo simulations are performed for a better understanding of the results.

In fundamental research, gas detectors of single photons are a must in the field of Cherenkov imaging techniques (RICH counters) for particle identification in large momentum ranges and with wide coverage of the phase space domain. These counters, already extensively used, are foreseen in the setups of future experiments in a large variety of fields in nuclear and particle physics. The quest of novel gaseous photon detector is dictated by the fact that the present generation of detectors has unique characteristics concerning operation in magnetic field, low material budget and cost, but it suffers of severe limitations in effective efficiency, rates, life time and stability, discouraging their use in high precision and high rate experiments. We are developing large size THick GEM (THGEM)-based detector of single photons. The R&D program includes the complete characterization of the THGEM electron multipliers, the study of the aspects related to the detection of single photons and the engineering towards large size detector prototype. Our most recent achievements include: dedicated studies concerning the ion back-flow to the photo-cathode; relevant progress in the engineering aspects, in particular related to the production of large-size THGEMs, where the strict correlation between the local gain-value and the local thickness-value has been demonstrated the operation of a 300 mm × 300 mm2 active area detector at the CERN PS T10 test beam; the introduction of a new hybrid detector architecture offering promising indication, which is formed by a THGEM layer which acts as CsI support and pre-amplification device followed by a MICROMEGAS multiplication stage. The THicK GEM (THGEM) electron multipliers are derived from the GEM design, by scaling the geometrical parameters and changing the production technology. Small-size (a few cm(2)) detectors exhibit superb performance, while larger ones exhibit gain response and uniformity limitations. We have studied with a systematic approach several aspects concerning the material (type and thickness of the fibreglass plates) and the production procedure, in particular the cleaning and polishing stages. The net result is the production of large THGEM multipliers reproducing the performance of the small ones. We report in detail about the studies and the results.

Improvements in the production of THGEMs with 300×300 mm2 active area have recently been introduced leading to a uniform gain response and performance similar to that provided by the small area THGEMs. Promising results have been obtained by combining THGEM and Micromegas technologies to form a hybrid MPGD-based photon detector: the first prototype has proved to stably operate at large gain in a variety of gas mixtures, including pure CH 4 and to provide a low ion backflow rate. The RICH-1 detector of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN SPS will be equipped with a set of MPGD-based photon detectors replacing MWPC-based ones.

Photon detectors based on micropattern gas detectors represent a new generation of gaseous photon detectors. In the context of a project to upgrade the gas photon detectors of COMPASS RICH-I, we are performing an R&D programme aimed both to establish the principles and to develop the engineering aspects of photon detectors based on multi-layer arrangements of thick GEMs electron multipliers coupled to a CsI photoconverter. The major results of a four-year R&D study are recalled with emphasis to the most recent achievements.

The (3p-1s) x-ray transition to the muonic hydrogen ground state was measured with a high-resolution crystal spectrometer. A Doppler effect broadening of the x-ray line was established which could be attributed to different Coulomb deexcitation steps preceding the measured transition. The assumption of a statistical population of the hyperfine levels of the muonic hydrogen ground state was directly confirmed by the experiment, and measured values for the hyperfine splitting can be reported. The results allow a decisive test of advanced cascade model calculations and establish a method to extract fundamental strong-interaction parameters from pionic hydrogen experiments.

International audience; The most recent pionic-hydrogen experiment marks the completion of a whole series of measurements, the main goal of which was to provide conclusive data on pion-nucleon interaction at threshold for comparison with calculations from Chiral perturbation theory. The precision achieved for hadronic shift and broadening of 0.2% and 2%, respectively, became possible by comprehensive studies of cascade effects in hydrogen and other light exotic atoms including results from the last years of LEAR operation. In order to obtain optimum conditions for the Bragg crystal spectrometer, the cyclotron trap II has been used to provide a suitable X-ray source. To characterize the bent crystal spectrometer, the cyclotron trap has been modified to operate as an electron-cyclotron resonance source, which produces with high intensity narrow X-ray transitions in the few keV range originating from highly charged ions.

Photon detectors based on micropattern gas detectors represent a new generation of gaseous photon detectors. In this context, a reduced rate of the backflow of the positive ions generated in the multiplication process is required to overcome the critical issues related to the bombardment of the CsI photoconverter by ions. Neutrinoless double beta decay measurements are the most promising experiments both to reveal the Majorana nature of the neutrino and to set a value for its mass. The NEXT project propose to build a High pressure Xenon TPC in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (Huesca, Spain) to measure double-beta decay of 136Xe, both normal and neutrinoless, with a source mass of 100 kg of enriched xenon.

The RICH-1 detector of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN SPS is undergoing an important upgrade: four new Photon Detectors, based on MPGD technology and covering a total active area larger than 1.4 m2 will replace the MWPC-based photon detectors in order to cope with the challenging efficiency and stability requirements of the new COMPASS measurements. The new detector architecture consists in a hybrid MPGD combination: two layers of THGEMs, the first of which also acts as a reflective photocathode as it is coted with a CsI film, are coupled to a bulk Micromegas on a pad segmented anode; the signals are read-out via capacitive coupling by analog F-E based on the APV-25 chip. These detectors are the first application in an experiment of MPGD-based single photon detectors. All aspects of the COMPASS RICH-1 Photon Detectors upgrade are presented and large emphasis is dedicated to the engineering aspects, the mass production and the quality assessment of the MPGD components. The status of the detector commissioning is also presented.

The photon detectors based on MPGD (MicroPattern Gaseous Detector) represent the new generation of gaseous photon detectors. We report about an R&D programme dedicated to study both the principles and the engineering aspects of photon detectors based on Thick GEMs (THGEM) electron multipliers coupled to a CsI photoconverting coating. The goal is the development of a gaseous detector of single UV photons, able to stably operate at high gain and high rate, to provide good time resolution and insensitive to magnetic field to be used in the Cherenkov imaging counter RICH-1 of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS.

An R&D project is presented, aimed to develop a high performance gaseous detector of single photons, for the upgrade of the Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter RICH-1 of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN SPS. The detector has to stably operate at high gain and high rate, to provide good time resolution and insensitivity to magnetic field, and to offer the possibility to cover very large areas at affordable cost. The proposed solution is based on the use of a novel and robust electron multiplier, the Thick GEM (THGEM), arranged in a multilayer architecture, where the first layer is coated with a photosensitive CsI film. A systematic study of the response of THGEMs with various geometrical and production parameters and in different conditions was performed, leading to the choice of a set of optimal parameters. Prototypes of THGEM-based photon detectors able to efficiently detect Cherenkov photons have been built, tested in laboratory and operated in test beam exercises with typical gain of 10 5 and time resolution better than 10 ns. The engineering aspects of building large area (600×600 mm 2 ) THGEM-based photon detectors are presently being investigated.
