Abstract

International audience; Ion stopping experiments in plasma for beam energies of few hundred keV per nucleon are of great interest to benchmark the stopping-power models in the context of inertial confinement fusion and high-energy-density physics research. For this purpose, a specific ion detector on chemical-vapor-deposition diamond basis has been developed for precise time-of-flight measurements of the ion energy loss. The electrode structure is interdigitated for maximizing its sensitivity to low-energy ions, and it has a finger width of 100 μm and a spacing of 500 μm. A short single α-particle response is obtained, with signals as narrow as 700 ps at full width at half maximum. The detector has been tested with α-particle bunches at a 500 keV per nucleon energy, showing an excellent time-of-flight resolution down to 20 ps. In this way, beam energy resolutions from 0.4 keV to a few keV have been obtained in an experimental configuration using a 100 μg/cm2 thick carbon foil as an energy-loss target and a 2 m time-of-flight distance. This allows a highly precise beam energy measurement of δE/E ≈ 0.04%–0.2% and a resolution on the energy loss of 0.6%–2.5% for a fine testing of stopping-power models.

Abstract

The Energy-Loss Function (ELF) of silicon is used to calculate differential and total inelastic cross-sections of incident electrons. The model is validated in the 50 eV–50 keV incident energy range by comparing the inelastic cross-sections, stopping powers, and ranges to experimental and calculated data from the literature. It is applicable down to 16.7 eV. The cross sections are then used to simulate low-energy electron tracks in silicon with Geant4, using a similar implementation as the Geant4-DNA extension; this new Geant4 extension is called MuElec. Generation of low-energy electrons is clearly seen. The obtained ranges are consistent with experimental data.

Abstract

Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) experiments performed on high-power laser facilities produce a high intensity short pulse of 14 MeV neutrons. The interaction of such an environment with coaxial cables widely used for signals transmission of diagnostic equipments induces parasitic transient currents. Depending on the magnitude and shape of those currents, measurement signals are likely to be altered and electric devices might be damaged. This paper reviews our knowledge about the generation of parasitic current in polyethylene (PE), PolyTetraFluorEthylene (PTFE) and PolyEtherEtherKetone (PEEK) insulators subjected to an ICF neutron pulse. It provides a clear evidence of the existence of a prompt neutron component and a very fast, nanosecond delayed radiation induced electromotive force (RIEMF) in insulator response to very short neutron pulses.

Abstract

The response of SOI transistors under heavy ion irradiation is analyzed using Geant4 and Synopsys Sentaurus device simulations. The ion mass and energy have a significant impact on the radial ionization profile of the ion deposited charge. For example, for an identical LET, the higher the ion energy per nucleon, the wider the radial ionization track. For a 70-nm SOI technology, the track radius of high energy ions (> 10 MeV/a) is larger than the transistor sensitive volume; part of the ion charge recombines in the highly doped source or drain regions and does not participate to the transistor electric response. Abstract

To assess phenomena occurring in coaxial cables under high flux of 14 MeV neutrons in D-T fusion experiments, a polyethylene, Teflontrade or vacuum sandwiched between two electrodes mock-up is proposed. This Mock-Up was exposed to the subnanosecond flux at the LLE OMEGA facility in Rochester (above 1018 n/cm2-s) normally to the electrodes or with a tilt angle. A radiation induced current probing a radiation induced electromotive force (RIEMF) is measured and a model is proposed based on the range of the neutron-induced recoils. The GEANT4 simulation toolkit has been used to take advantage of the implementation of both nuclear and electromagnetic processes in order to compute the tracks and the strong angle dependence. Good agreements between simulations and experimental results are found for polyethylene in contrast with Teflontrade where the 3-alpha break-up of 12C not considered in GEANT4 seems to make a major contribution to the measured induced current. Comparison with the photon flux is made.

Abstract

The single-event effects response of three different III-V field-effect transistor technologies (GaAs MESFET, InAlAs/InGaAs HEMT, and AlSb/InAs HEMT) is measured for MeV and GeV heavy-ion irradiation. These measurements reveal significant charge enhancement and very slow, microsecond-timescale relaxation times for the GaAs and InAlAs/InGaAs devices, with a much faster recovery from the ionizing event observed for the AlSb/InAs HEMTs.

Abstract

The fragmentation of 95 MeV/u 12C and 75 MeV/u 13C projectiles, interacting with natural targets of different elements (9Be, $^{\rm nat}$ Cu and 197Au for 12C, and 9Be, $^{\rm nat}$ Ni, and 181Ta for 13C) and of various thicknesses has been investigated at GANIL, using the doubly achromatic magnetic spectrometer LISE. The projectile-like fragments transmitted at 0 $^\circ$ have been analysed using a silicon $\Delta E$ -E telescope and the $\Delta E$ -time-of-flight method. The results obtained with the thinnest targets are discussed in the scope of radioactive nuclear beam production. The fragment momentum distributions can be fitted by Gaussian peaks associated with exponential tails towards low momentum values. The experimental production yields are compared with the results of the simulation code LISE. It appears that this code reproduces satisfactorily the yields of nuclei close to the stability line, but strongly overestimates the production of very neutron-deficient nuclei.

The neutron-rich 57−59 Ti, 59−62 V, 61−64 Cr, 63−66 Mn, 65−68 Fe, 67−70 Co have been produced at GANIL via interactions of a 60.4 MeV/u 86 Kr 34+ with a 58 Ni target. They have been separated by the doubly achromatic spectrometer LISE3. Beta-decay half-lives have been determined for all produced nuclei, and subsequent γ -rays have been observed for the most efficiently produced nuclei. The measured half-lives of vanadium and chromium isotopes are compared to QRPA calculations using ground states deformations from the FRDM or ETFSI models. In an astrophysical context, the short half-lives of 58 Ti and 64 Cr indicate that these nuclei are potential r-process progenitors, after β -decay, of 58 Fe and 64 Ni in certain inclusions of meteorites.

Abstract

Two new isomeric states in the self-conjugate nucleus 66As have been observed at the final focus of the LISE3 spectrometer at GANIL. The nucleus has been produced in a fragmentation reaction of 78Kr at 73A MeV. The 66m1,m2As isomeric levels are placed at excitation energies of E ∗m1 =3023.9 keV and E ∗m2 =1356.7 keV. Half-lives of T1/2m1=17.5(15) μs and T1/2m2=1.9(5) μs have been measured for the isomers and a decay scheme has been established.

Abstract

In an experiment at the SISSI/LISE facility of GANIL, we used the projectile fragmentation of a ${}^{78}\mathrm{Kr}$ primary beam at 73 MeV/nucleon to produce new isotopes of astrophysical interest. We obtained clear evidence for the existence of the five new isotopes ${}^{60}\mathrm{Ga}$, ${}^{64}\mathrm{As}$, ${}^{69,70}\mathrm{Kr}$, and ${}^{74}\mathrm{Sr}$. However, we did not find any evidence for ${}^{69}\mathrm{Br}$, whereas comparable nuclei were observed with more than 1000 counts. The isotope ${}^{69}\mathrm{Br}$ is thus deduced to be a proton-unbound nucleus with a half-life shorter than about 100 ns. The influence of these results on our understanding of the astrophysical RP process is discussed.

Abstract

A 42 Sc m isomeric beam was produced for the first time at GANIL. The 12 C( 40 Ca, 42 Sc m ) 10 B transfer reaction at 30 MeV / A yielded an isomeric purity of 98±5%. Using the LISE3 on line separation, 30% of the residual 40 Ca nuclei were observed. A 42 Sc m secondary beam intensity of 114 pps was obtained with a 3 10 10 pps 40 Ca incident beam bombarding the 5 mg/cm 2 12 C target.

Abstract

International audience; The relative contribution of the radial ionization profile on SEE prediction is investigated using MUSCA-SEP3 , in comparison with the classical approach considering the ion track as a series of punctual charges. The new approach is validated against experimental results, for three technology generations of PDSOI transistors and for two generations of SOI SRAM cells, showing better agreement than the punctual approach. The impact of the radial approach on the evaluation of SEU cross section as compared to the punctual approach is then investigated for nanometric SOI SRAM cells, beyond the 32-nm technological node. The influence of the radial dimension of the ion track is shown to increase with technology generation. The impact of the ion mass and energy on the ratio between radial and punctual SEU cross section is also investigated.

Abstract

A decay spectroscopic study of the neutron-rich isotopes has been performed using fragmentation of a 86Kr primary beam. Fragments from this reaction have been selected by the LISE2000 spectrometer at the Grand Acc el erateur National d Ions Lourds (GANIL). Half-lives of 29 isotopes, including the first ones identified for 61Ti (15 4 ms), 64V (19 8 ms), and 71Fe (28 5 ms), have been determined and compared with model predictions. 67,68Mn -delayed rays were observed for the first time. The branching for the -delayed neutron emission was measured to be greater than 10(5)% in the 67Mn decay. The 67Fe isomeric level is firmly determined at higher energy than assigned in previous works. The excitation energies of the first (2+) and (4+) states of 68Fe are suggested to lie at 522(1) and 1389(1) keV, respectively, thus bringing confirmation of assignments based on in-beam -ray spectroscopy. Beyond-mean-field calculations with the Gogny D1S force have been performed for even-mass nuclei through the Fe isotopic chain. Not only 68Fe but most of the neutron-rich Fe isotopes with neutron numbers below N = 50 are interpreted as soft rotors. The calculated mean occupancy of the neutron g9/2 and d5/2 orbitals in correlated ground statesmore » is steadily growing with increasing neutron number throughout the isotopic chain. Interpretation of 67Fe data is based upon the present calculations for the 66Fe and 68Fe even cores.« less

Abstract

Experimental results showing angular dependence for charge collection in SOI transistors under heavy ion irradiation are presented. Geant4 and Synopsys Sentaurus simulations are performed to analyze these results in terms of direct ionization effects. The influence of the beam direction in relation to that of the transistor's channel on the transistor's response is underlined. Depending on the considered beam direction, deviation from the inverse-cosine law is shown to vary from 0% to 30%. These differences seem to be independent of the ion energy. However, the use of different ion species may hide this possible effect.

Abstract

The Energy-Loss Function (ELF) of silicon has been used to calculate differential and total inelastic cross-sections of incident electrons. The model has been validated in the 16.7 eV-50 keV incident energy range by comparing the stopping powers, mean free paths and ranges to experimental and evaluated ICRU data. The cross sections were then used to simulate low-energy electron tracks in silicon using the Geant4-DNA toolkit. Generation of low-energy electrons are clearly seen. The obtained ranges are consistent with experimental data.

Abstract

Isomeric low-lying states were identified and investigated in the {sup 75}Cu nucleus. Two states at 61.8(5)- and 128.3(7)-keV excitation energies with half-lives of 370(40)- and 170(15)-ns were assigned as {sup 75m1}Cu and {sup 75m2}Cu, respectively. The measured half-lives combined with the recent spin assignment of the ground state allow one to deduce tentatively spin and parity of the two isomers and the dominant multipolarities of the isomeric transitions with respect to the systematics of the Cu isotopes. Shell-model calculations using an up-to-date effective interaction reproduce the evolution of the 1/2{sup -}, 3/2{sup -}, and 5/2{sup -} states for the neutron-rich odd-mass Cu isotopes when filling the nug{sub 9/2}. The results indicate a significant change in the nuclear structure in this region, where a single-particle 5/2{sup -} state coexists with more and more collective 3/2{sup -} and 1/2{sup -} levels at low excitation energies.

Abstract

The implementation of equipments with embedded electronic to monitor, control, measure and operate future large facilities dedicated to high energy physics or nuclear fusion are necessary. Reliable operation of these equipments will be achieved through availability and reliability analysis. In several cases, the equipment selection or development approach has to be done by considering a harsh environment in terms of radiations. In order to implement these systems in such environments shielding, location and distance from the source must be considered to reduce, to protect and to avoid radiation effects. People in charge of the choice of the equipments have to take into account and mitigate radiation effects from subsystem to system level. This requires an approach integrating tradeoff between performance and reliability, between the use of the state of the art of technologies and robust and well known devices. Experience and knowledge from previous programs should be considered to build approach and strategy that may be necessary to overcome difficulties. In the present paper, we will review the main challenges faced by designers for systems implementation with embedded electronics in future facilities dedicated to international physics programs.

To investigate the behavior of the N=14 neutron gap far from stability with a neutron-sensitive probe, proton elastic and 2{sub 1}{sup +} inelastic scattering angular distributions for the neutron-rich nucleus {sup 22}O were measured using the MUr a STrip detector array at the Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds facility. A deformation parameter {beta}{sub p,p{sup '}}=0.26{+-}0.04 is obtained for the 2{sub 1}{sup +} state, much lower than in {sup 20}O, showing a weak neutron contribution to this state. A microscopic analysis was performed using matter and transition densities generated by continuum Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and quasiparticle random phase approximation calculations, respectively. The ratio of neutron to proton contributions to the 2{sub 1}{sup +} state is found close to the N/Z ratio, demonstrating a strong N=14 shell closure in the vicinity of the neutron drip line.

Abstract

The yrast J(pi)=8(+) states in neutron-rich Ni-70,Ni-72,Ni-74,Ni-76 nuclei are predicted to be isomeric. The present paper describes two GANIL experiments. In the first of them a search was made for the 8(+) isomeric states in Ni-72,Ni-74 nuclei via fragmentation of Ge-76 using the ion gamma-decay correlation technique. Although these states were not observed, limits for their lifetimes were determined. In the second experiment the decay spectroscopy of Co-70,Co-72 nuclei was performed using fragmentation of a Kr-86(36+) beam and the new LISE2000 spectrometer. The beta delayed gamma rays from the decay of Co-70,Co-72 to Ni-70,Ni-72 were observed using the EXOGAM germanium detectors. The half life of Co-72 was measured to be 62(3) ms and the level sequence of the lowest excited states in Ni-72 was suggested, with the 2(+) state at 1096 keV. An attempt to reproduce the level scheme in terms of shell-model calculations was undertaken. The reasons for the disappearance of the 8(+) isomer in Ni-72 are discussed.

Abstract

An experiment was performed at GANIL to observe isomeric‐ and beta‐delayed gamma rays from very neutron‐rich nuclei around 74Ni. Fragmentation products of the 86Kr beam at 58 AMeV were studied using new devices: the LISE 2000 spectrometer and detectors from the EXOGAM germanium array. The primary aim of the experiment was to find the 8+ microsecond isomer in 76Ni and to perform beta decay spectroscopy of Co nuclei. We have successfully measured the beta delayed gammas from the decay of 72Co to 72Ni. The energies for the lowest excited states in 72Ni are proposed, with the first 2+ state at 1096 keV. These findings suggest a solution of the problem of the disappearance of the 8+ isomer in 72Ni. We also measured beta decay of other neutron‐rich Co isotopes including 70Co. First evidence was found for a new short lived isomer, most likely the Iπ=8+ state, in 76Ni.

International audience; Isomeric ratios and the momentum distributions of nuclei produced in the fragmentation of a 60AMeV 92Mo beam on a thin 27Al target have been studied. A strong dependence of the isomeric ratio on the structure of the isomer and on the reaction mechanism has been observed for the first time at intermediate energies.

Abstract

A new isomeric state in 78Zn has been identified and studied in the fragmentation of a 60.5 AMeV 86Kr beam on a natNi target. The measured energies of the transitions and the half-life, T1/2=319(9) ns, of the isomeric decay suggest a spin and parity assignment F=S+. The deduced B(E2,S+ -+ 6+) value equals 1.21(5) W.u. is well reproduced in large scale shell model calculations using realistic interactions in the proton-neutron 2p3/2, 1f5/2' 2p1/2' 199 / 2 model space. Standard E2 polarisation charges of D.5e for both protons and neutrons were used. This result consists the first experimental evidence of the persistance of the N=50 shell gap in the vicinity f 78N' o 28 150·

Abstract

The structure of nuclei far from stability can be investigated by means of in-beam gamma spectroscopy using both stable and radioactive beams. Two such experiments have been recently performed at GANIL. i) Secondary beams of neutron-rich Ge, Zn and Ni isotopes around N=40 were produced from the fragmentation of a primary 86 Kr beam, and analyzed by means of the LISE3 spectrometer. For the transitions between the 0+ ground state and the first 2+ state, B(E2) values have been extracted from Coulomb excitation cross-section measurement. Some of the obtained results related to the effectiveness of the N=40 spherical sub-shell closure are discussed. ii) In-beam γ-spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei around 32Mg produced by fragmentation of 36S have been performed recently. Gamma decay of relatively higher excited states have been measured in a large number of exotic light nuclei. Preliminary results obtained in a number of neutron-rich nuclei around N=20 are presented.

Abstract

Excited states in the nuclei with Z{approx}28 and N{approx}40 have been studied. These neutron-rich nuclei have been produced in the fragmentation reaction of a {sup 86}Kr beam at 60.3 MeV/ nucl. The decays of isomers populated in the fragmentation are detected at the final focus of the spectrometer in event-by-event microsecond correlation with identified recoils. Several new isomers with half-lives {approx}300 ns have been discovered including the very exotic {sup 78m}Zn. A puzzling result of the performed experiment, the non-observation of expected I{sup {pi}}=8{sup +} isomers in {sup 72}Ni and {sup 74}Ni nuclei is also reported. A gamma -array consisting of BaF2 and Ge detectors have been used at GANIL in order to perform two of such experiments: i) Secondary beams of neutron-rich Ge, Zn and Ni isotopes around N=40 were produced from the fragmentation of a primary /sup 86/Kr beam, and analyzed by means of the LISE3 spectrometer. For the transitions between the 0/sup +/ ground state and the first 2/sup +/ state, B(E2) values have been extracted from Coulomb excitation cross-section measurement. Some of the obtained results related to the effectiveness of the N=40 spherical sub-shell closure as well as future improvements of the quality of the data are discussed. ii) In-beam gamma -spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei around /sup 32/Mg produced by fragmentation of /sup 36/S have been recently performed Gamma decay of relatively higher excited states have been measured in a large number of exotic light nuclei. Preliminary results obtained in a number of even-even nuclei around N=20, such as /sup 20,22/O, /sup 26,28/Ne and /sup 30,32/Mg are presented.

Expérience GANIL, SISSI/LISE; In an experiment at the SISSI/LISE facility of GANIL, we produced proton-rich isotopes in the selenium-to-strontium region by projectile fragmentation of a 78Kr primary beam at 73 MeV/nucleon. The emission of P-delayed protons from h7Se, 7'Kr, and 75Sr was observed for the first time and the corresponding branching ratios were determined. The proton energy spectra were compared to predictions of a statistical model. The half-lives of 67 Se, 7' Kr, and 75Sr were deduced from the time characteristics of the observed proton activity. The half-life of 75Sr was measured for the first time. For “Se and 7'Kr, the obtained half-lives are compared to previous measurements.

Abstract

This paper reviews two experiments performed at GSI and GANIL. Using a primary beam of 58 Ni at 650 MeV/nucleon impinging on a beryllium target, production cross sections of proton-rich fragments from projectile fragmentation have been measured at the projectile-fragment separator FRS at GSI. The production rates measured demonstrate that counting rates much higher than expected can be obtained at the proton drip line. The results from spectroscopy measurements show that no Thomas-Ehrmann effect is present in our data which means that the decay energies and masses can be well predicted by using e.g. the IMME. The secondary reactions evidence a slight increase of the interaction cross sections when approaching the proton drip line. Finally, in an experiment performed at the SISSI/LISE facility at GANIL using a 78 Kr primary beam, we have observed the 5 new isotopes 60 Ga, 64 As, 69,70 Kr, and 74 Sr. However, we have not found any evidence for 69 Br which was reported to be observed with a few counts at MSU. These new findings change our understanding of the path and of the ending point of the rp process.

Abstract

In the experiment performed at the LISE2000 spectrometer at GANIL neutron-rich nickel isotopes were studied by microsecond isomer spectroscopy. Evidence for an isomer in 76Ni is found, consistently with the shell model prediction of an 8 + state of \(\nu (g_{9/2})^2\) structure.
