Search

Accretion discs appear in many astrophysical systems. In most cases, these discs are probably not completely axisymmetric. Discs in binary systems are often found to be misaligned with respect to the binary orbit. In this case, the gravitational torque from a companion induces nodal precession in misaligned rings of gas. We first calculate whether this precession is strong enough to overcome the internal disc torques communicating angular momentum. For typical parameters, precession torque wins. To check this result, we perform numerical simulations using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics code, PHANTOM, and confirm that sufficiently thin and sufficiently inclined discs can break into distinct planes that precess effectively independently. Disc tearing is widespread and severely changes the disc structure. It enhances dissipation and promotes stronger accretion onto the central object. We also perform a stability analysis on isolated warped discs to understand the physics of disc breaking and tearing observed in numerical simulations. The instability appears in the form of viscous anti-diffusion of the warp amplitude and the surface density. The discovery of disc breaking and tearing has revealed new physical processes that dramatically change the evolution of accretion discs, with obvious implications for observed systems.

We present the results of a multi-wavelength follow up campaign for the luminous nuclear transient Gaia16aax, which was first identified in January 2016. The transient is spatially consistent with the nucleus of an active galaxy at z=0.25, hosting a black hole of mass $\rm \sim6\times10^8M_\odot$. The nucleus brightened by more than 1 magnitude in the Gaia G-band over a timescale of less than one year, before fading back to its pre-outburst state over the following three years. The optical spectra of the source show broad Balmer lines similar to the ones present in a pre-outburst spectrum. During the outburst, the $\rm H\alpha$ and $\rm H\beta$ emission lines develop a secondary peak. We also report on the discovery of two transients with similar light curve evolution and spectra: Gaia16aka and Gaia16ajq. We consider possible scenarios to explain the observed outbursts. We exclude that the transient event could be caused by a microlensing event, variable dust absorption or a tidal encounter between a neutron star and a stellar mass black hole in the accretion disk. We consider variability in the accretion flow in the inner part of the disk, or a tidal disruption event of a star $\geq 1 M_{\odot}$ by a rapidly spinning supermassive black hole as the most plausible scenarios. Context. Gas has been successfully detected in many extrasolar systems around mature stars aged between 10 Myr and ∼1 Gyr that include planetesimal belts. Gas in these mature disks is thought to be released from planetesimals and has been modeled using a viscous disk approach where the gas expands inwards and outwards from the belt where it is produced. Therefore, the gas has so far been assumed to make up the circumstellar disk orbiting the star; however, at low densities, this may not be an adequate assumption, as the gas could be blown out by the stellar wind instead. Aims. In this paper, we aim to explore the timeframe in which a gas disk transitions to such a gas wind and whether this information can be used to determine the stellar wind properties around main sequence stars, which are otherwise difficult to obtain. Methods. We developed an analytical model for A to M stars that can follow the evolution of gas outflows and target the moment of transition between a disk or a wind in order to make a comparison with current observations. The crucial criterion here is the gas density for which gas particles are no longer protected from the impact of stellar wind protons at high velocities and on radial trajectories. Results. We find that: (1) belts with a radial width, ΔR, with gas densities −1 cm−3, would create a wind rather than a disk, which would explain the recent outflowing gas detection in NO Lup; (2) the properties of this belt wind can be used to measure stellar wind properties such as their densities and velocities; (3) very early-type stars can also form gas winds due to the star’s radiation pressure, instead of a stellar wind; (4) debris disks with low fractional luminosities, f, are more likely to create gas winds, which could be observed with current facilities. Conclusions. Systems containing low gas masses, such as Fomalhaut or TWA 7, or more generally, debris disks with fractional luminosities of f ≲ 10−5(L⋆/L⊙)−0.37 or stellar luminosity ≳20 L⊙ (A0V or earlier) are more likely to create gas outflows (or belt winds) than gas disks. Gas that is observed to be outflowing at high velocity in the young system NO Lup could be an example of such belt winds. Future observing predictions in this wind region should account for the stellar wind in the attempt to detect the gas. The detection of these gas winds is possible with ALMA (CO and CO+ could serve as good wind tracers). This would allow us to constrain the stellar wind properties of main-sequence stars, as these properties are otherwise difficult to measure, since, for example, there are no successful measures around A stars at present.

We use well-established observational evidence to draw conclusions about the fundamental nature of the viscosity in accretion discs. To do this, we first summarise the observational evidence for the value of the dimensionless accretion disc viscosity parameter $\alpha$, defined by Shakura & Sunyaev (1973, 1976). We find that, for fully ionized discs, the value of $\alpha$ is readily amenable to reliable estimation and that the observations are consistent with the hypothesis that $\alpha \sim 0.2 - 0.3$. In contrast in discs that are not fully ionized, estimates of the value of $\alpha$ are generally less direct and the values obtained are generally $ < 0.01$ and often $ \ll 0.01$. We conclude that this gives us crucial information about the nature of viscosity in accretion discs. First, in fully ionized discs the strength of the turbulence is always limited by being at most trans-sonic. This implies that it is necessary that credible models of the turbulence reflect this fact. Second, the smaller values of $\alpha$ found for less ionized, and therefore less strongly conducting, discs imply that magnetism plays a dominant role. This provides important observational support for the concept of magneto-rotational instability (MRI) driven hydromagnetic turbulence., Comment: Accepted for publication in New Astronomy

Gas has been detected in many exoplanetary systems ($>$10 Myr), thought to be released in the destruction of volatile-rich planetesimals orbiting in exo-Kuiper belts. In this letter, we aim to explore whether gas is also expected in the Kuiper belt (KB) in our Solar System. To quantify the gas release in our Solar System, we use models for gas release that have been applied to extrasolar planetary systems, as well as a physical model that accounts for gas released due to the progressive internal warming of large planetesimals. We find that only bodies larger than about 4 km can still contain CO ice after 4.6 Gyr of evolution. This finding may provide a clue as to why Jupiter-family comets, thought to originate in the Kuiper belt, are deficient in CO compared to Oort-clouds comets. We predict that gas is still produced in the KB right now at a rate of $2 \times 10^{-8}$ M$_\oplus$/Myr for CO and orders of magnitude more when the Sun was younger. Once released, the gas is quickly pushed out by the Solar wind. Therefore, we predict a gas wind in our Solar System starting at the KB location and extending far beyond with regards to the heliosphere with a current total CO mass of $\sim 2 \times 10^{-12}$ M$_\oplus$. We also predict the existence of a slightly more massive atomic gas wind made of carbon and oxygen (neutral and ionized) with a mass of $\sim 10^{-11}$ M$_\oplus$. We predict that gas is currently present in our Solar System beyond the Kuiper belt and that although it cannot be detected with current instrumentation, it could be observed in the future with an in situ mission using an instrument similar to Alice on New Horizons with larger detectors. In order to provide an explanation for the unexpected radial brightness distribution of the steady accretion discs seen in nova-like variables, Nixon & Pringle (2019) proposed that the accretion energy is redistributed outwards by means of strong, magnetically driven, surface flows. In this paper we note that the "powerful, rotating disc winds" observed in the soft states of black hole X-ray binaries, and also in the disc around a magnetized neutron star in Her X-1, have the properties of the outflows postulated by Nixon & Pringle to exist in the nova-like variable accretion discs around white dwarfs. The relevant properties are that the flows are not winds, but are, instead, bound flows (traveling at less than the escape velocity) and that the mass fluxes in the flows are a substantial fraction of the accretion rate in the disc., 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Be stars are rapidly rotating B stars with Balmer emission lines that indicate the presence of a Keplerian, rotationally supported, circumstellar gas disc. Current disc models, referred to as "decretion discs", make use of the zero torque inner boundary condition typically applied to accretion discs, with the 'decretion' modelled by adding mass to the disc at a radius of about two per cent larger than the inner disc boundary. We point out that, in this model, the rates at which mass and energy need to be added to the disc are implausibly large. What is required is that the disc has not only a source of mass but also a continuing source of angular momentum. We argue that the disc evolution may be more physically modelled by application of the non-zero torque inner boundary condition of Nixon & Pringle (2020), which determines the torque applied at the boundary as a fraction of the advected angular momentum flux there and approaches the accretion and decretion disc cases in the appropriate limits. We provide supporting arguments for the suggestion that the origin of the disc material is small-scale magnetic flaring events on the stellar surface, which, when combined with rapid rotation, can provide sufficient mass to form, and sufficient angular momentum to maintain, a Keplerian Be star disc. We discuss the origin of such small-scale magnetic fields in radiative stars with differential rotation. We conclude that small-scale magnetic fields on the stellar surface, may be able to provide the necessary mass flux and the necessary time-dependent torque on the disc inner regions to drive the observed disc evolution., 6 pages, no figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We perform simulations of isolated galaxies in order to investigate the likely origin of the spiral structure in M33. In our models, we find that gravitational instabilities in the stars and gas are able to reproduce the observed spiral pattern and velocity field of M33, as seen in HI, and no interaction is required. We also find that the optimum models have high levels of stellar feedback which create large holes similar to those observed in M33, whilst lower levels of feedback tend to produce a large amount of small scale structure, and undisturbed long filaments of high surface density gas, hardly detected in the M33 disc. The gas component appears to have a significant role in producing the structure, so if there is little feedback, both the gas and stars organise into clear spiral arms, likely due to a lower combined $Q$ (using gas and stars), and the ready ability of cold gas to undergo spiral shocks. By contrast models with higher feedback have weaker spiral structure, especially in the stellar component, compared to grand design galaxies. We did not see a large difference in the behaviour of $Q_{stars}$ with most of these models, however, because $Q_{stars}$ stayed relatively constant unless the disc was more strongly unstable. Our models suggest that although the stars produce some underlying spiral structure, this is relatively weak, and the gas physics has a considerable role in producing the large scale structure of the ISM in flocculent spirals., 17 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In a standard, steady, thin accretion disc, the radial distribution of the dissipation of the accretion energy is determined simply by energy considerations. Here we draw attention to the fact that while the (quasi-)steady discs in dwarf novae in outburst are in agreement with the expected emission distribution, the steady discs in the nova-like variables are not. We note that essentially the only difference between these two sets of discs is the time for which they have been in the high viscosity, high accretion rate state. In such discs, the major process by which angular momentum is transported outwards is MHD turbulence. We speculate that such turbulence gives rise to corona-like structures (here called magnetically controlled zones, or MCZs) which are also able to provide non-negligible angular momentum transport, the magnitude of which depends on the spatial scale $L$ of the magnetic field structures in such zones. For short-lived, high accretion rate discs (such as those in dwarf novae) we expect $L \sim H$ and the MCZ to have little effect. But, with time (such as in the nova-like variables) an inverse cascade in the MHD turbulence enables $L$, and the net effect of the MCZ, to grow. Short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) are generally thought to result from the merger of two neutron stars or the merger of a neutron star with a black hole. It is becoming standard practise to model these mergers with hydrodynamical simulations that employ equations of state that are derived, for example, for determining the behaviour of matter in core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), and which therefore make use of the assumption that the matter is hot and in nuclear statistical equilibrium (NSE). In this Letter we draw attention to the fact that the hydrodynamical timescale (roughly the gravitational timescale of the neutron star) may be several orders of magnitude shorter than the timescale on which such equilibrium can be re-established in the tidal debris ejected during a sGRB, and that on the initial decompression timescales the unshocked tidal ejecta may remain sufficiently cool that the employed equations of state are not appropriate for modelling the dynamics of this part of the flow. On timescales short compared with the timescale on which NSE can be (re)established, the equation of state can remain relatively stiff and thus the stream of tidal debris can remain narrow and vulnerable to gravitational instability, as has recently been suggested. These findings suggest that estimates of the type and abundances of heavy elements formed in short gamma-ray bursts need to be revisited. We suggest that the most direct method of testing the physical and dynamical properties of tidal ejecta in sGRBs will come from modelling of their light curves, which provides the cleanest source of information on the system dynamics., Comment: 8 pages. Current planet formation theories provide successful frameworks with which to interpret the array of new observational data in this field. However, each of the two main theories (core accretion, gravitational instability) is unable to explain some key aspects. In many planet formation calculations, it is usual to treat the initial properties of the planet forming disc (mass, radius, etc.) as free parameters. In this paper, we stress the importance of setting the formation of planet forming discs within the context of the formation of the central stars. By exploring the early stages of disc formation, we introduce the concept of the Maximum Mass Solar Nebula (MMSN), as opposed to the oft-used Minimum Mass Solar Nebula (here mmsn). It is evident that almost all protoplanetary discs start their evolution in a strongly self-gravitating state. In agreement with almost all previous work in this area, we conclude that on the scales relevant to planet formation these discs are not gravitationally unstable to gas fragmentation, but instead form strong, transient spiral arms. These spiral arms can act as efficient dust traps allowing the accumulation and subsequent fragmentation of the dust (but not the gas). This phase is likely to populate the disc with relatively large planetesimals on short timescales while the disc is still veiled by a dusty-gas envelope. Crucially, the early formation of large planetesimals overcomes the main barriers remaining within the core accretion model. Accretion discs are generally warped. If a warp in a disc is too large, the disc can `break' apart into two or more distinct planes, with only tenuous connections between them. Further if an initially planar disc is subject to a strong differential precession, then it can be torn apart into discrete annuli that precess effectively independently. In previous investigations, torque-balance formulae have been used to predict where and when the disc breaks into distinct parts. In this work, focusing on discs with Keplerian rotation and where the shearing motions driving the radial communication of the warp are damped locally by turbulence (the `diffusive' regime), we investigate the stability of warped discs to determine the precise criterion for an isolated warped disc to break. We find and solve the dispersion relation, which in general yields three roots. We provide a comprehensive analysis of this viscous-warp instability and the emergent growth rates and their dependence on disc parameters. The physics of the instability can be understood as a combination of (1) a term which would generally encapsulate the classical Lightman-Eardley instability in planar discs (given by $\partial(\nu\Sigma)/\partial\Sigma < 0$) but is here modified by the warp to include $\partial(\nu_1|\psi|)/\partial|\psi| < 0$ and (2) a similar condition acting on the diffusion of the warp amplitude given in simplified form by $\partial(\nu_2|\psi|)/\partial|\psi| < 0$. We discuss our findings in the context of discs with an imposed precession, and comment on the implications for different astrophysical systems., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Magnetic fields are observed in star forming regions. However simulations of the late stages of star formation that do not include magnetic fields provide a good fit to the properties of young stars including the initial mass function (IMF) and the multiplicity. We argue here that the simulations that do include magnetic fields are unable to capture the correct physics, in particular the high value of the magnetic Prandtl number, and the low value of the magnetic diffusivity. The artificially high (numerical and uncontrolled) magnetic diffusivity leads to a large magnetic flux pervading the star forming region. We argue further that in reality the dynamics of high magnetic Prandtl number turbulence may lead to local regions of magnetic energy dissipation through reconnection, meaning that the regions of molecular clouds which are forming stars might be essentially free of magnetic fields. Thus the simulations that ignore magnetic fields on the scales on which the properties of stellar masses, stellar multiplicities and planet-forming discs are determined, may be closer to reality than those which include magnetic fields, but can only do so in an unrealistic parameter regime., Comment: 28 pages, 0 figures, accepted for publication in New Astronomy

The rapidly evolving dust and gas extinction observed towards WD 1145+017 has opened a real-time window onto the mechanisms for destruction-accretion of planetary bodies onto white dwarf stars, and has served to underline the importance of considering the dynamics of dust particles around such objects. Here it is argued that the interaction between (charged) dust grains and the stellar magnetic field is an important ingredient in understanding the physical distribution of infrared emitting particles in the vicinity of such white dwarfs. These ideas are used to suggest a possible model for WD 1145+017 in which the unusual transit shapes are caused by opaque clouds of dust trapped in the stellar magnetosphere. The model can account for the observed transit periodicities if the stellar rotation is near 4.5 h, as the clouds of trapped dust are then located near or within the co-rotation radius. The model requires the surface magnetic field to be at least around some tens of kG. In contrast to the eccentric orbits expected for large planetesimals undergoing tidal disintegration, the orbits of magnetospherically-trapped dust clouds are essentially circular, consistent with the observations., Comment: 5 pages, accepted to MNRAS Letters

We investigate cloud-cloud collisions, and GMC evolution, in hydrodynamic simulations of isolated galaxies. The simulations include heating and cooling of the ISM, self--gravity and stellar feedback. Over timescales $, 13 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The manner in which warps in accretion disks evolve depends on the magnitude of the viscosity. For small viscosity $(\alpha < H/R)$ the warp evolves in a wave-like manner; for large viscosity $H/R, Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

BAILES et al.1 have reported the discovery of a planet-mass object in a six-month orbit around the radio pulsar PS R1829–10. The parameters of the orbit, in particular its circularity, make it unlikely that this planet existed before the supernova explosion that presumably created the pulsar, and somehow survived1. Here we present two alternative explanations for the existence and orbital parameters of the claimed planet-mass object. In the first, the pulsar forms from the coalescence of two white dwarfs, and the planet condenses from a massive disk of material left behind. In the second, a neutron star collides with and cannibalizes the central star of a solar-type planetary system. The orbits of the inner planets are made elliptical by this collision, but then recircularized by drag forces due to the extended but short-lived envelope of the disrupted central star.

This paper presents a self-consistent model for the evolution of gas produced in the debris disc of $\beta$ Pictoris. Our model proposes that atomic carbon and oxygen are created from the photodissociation of CO, which is itself released from volatile-rich bodies in the debris disc due to grain-grain collisions or photodesorption. While the CO lasts less than one orbit, the atomic gas evolves by viscous spreading resulting in an accretion disc inside the parent belt and a decretion disc outside. The temperature, ionisation fraction and population levels of carbon and oxygen are followed with the photodissociation region model Cloudy, which is coupled to a dynamical viscous $\alpha$ model. We present new gas observations of $\beta$ Pic, of C I observed with APEX and O I observed with Herschel, and show that these along with published C II and CO observations can all be explained with this new model. Our model requires a viscosity $\alpha$ > 0.1, similar to that found in sufficiently ionised discs of other astronomical objects; we propose that the magnetorotational instability is at play in this highly ionised and dilute medium. This new model can be tested from its predictions for high resolution ALMA observations of C I. We also constrain the water content of the planetesimals in $\beta$ Pic. The scenario proposed here might be at play in all debris discs and this model could be used more generally on all discs with C, O or CO detections., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We analyse the results of four simulations of isolated galaxies: two with a rigid spiral potential of fixed pattern speed, but with different degrees of star-formation induced feedback, one with an axisymmetric galactic potential and one with a `live' self-gravitating stellar component. Since we use a Lagrangian method we are able to select gas that lies within giant molecular clouds (GMCs) at a particular timeframe, and to then study the properties of this gas at earlier and later times. We find that gas which forms GMCs is not typical of the interstellar medium at least 50 Myr before the clouds form and reaches mean densities within an order of magnitude of mean cloud densities by around 10 Myr before. The gas in GMCs takes at least 50 Myr to return to typical ISM gas after dispersal by stellar feedback, and in some cases the gas is never fully recycled. We also present a study of the two-dimensional, vertically-averaged velocity fields within the ISM. We show that the velocity fields corresponding to the shortest timescales (that is, those timescales closest to the immediate formation and dissipation of the clouds) can be readily understood in terms of the various cloud formation and dissipation mechanisms. Properties of the flow patterns can be used to distinguish the processes which drive converging flows (e.g.\ spiral shocks, supernovae) and thus molecular cloud formation, and we note that such properties may be detectable with future observations of nearby galaxies.

A re-evaluation of time-averaged accretion rates at DBZ-type white dwarfs points to historical, time-averaged rates significantly higher than the currently observed episodes at their DAZ counterparts. The difference between the ongoing, instantaneous accretion rates witnessed at DAZ white dwarfs, which often exceed 1e8 g/s, and those inferred over the past 1e5-1e6 yr for the DBZ stars can be a few orders of magnitude, and therefore must result from high-rate episodes of tens to hundreds of years so they remain undetected to date. This paper explores the likelihood that such brief, intense accretion episodes of gas-phase material can account for existing data. For reasonable assumptions about the circumstellar gas, accretion rates approaching or exceeding 1e15 g/s are possible, similar to rates observed in quiescent cataclysmic variables, and potentially detectable with future x-ray missions or wide-field monitoring facilities. Gaseous debris that is prone to such rapid accretion may be abundant immediately following a tidal disruption event via collisions and sublimation, or if additional bodies impinge upon an extant disk. Particulate disk matter accretes at or near the Poynting-Robertson drag rate for long periods between gas-producing events, consistent with rates inferred for dusty DAZ white dwarfs. In this picture, warm DAZ stars without infrared excesses have rates consistent with accretion from particulate disks that remain undetected. This overall picture has implications for quasi-steady state models of accretion and the derived chemical composition of asteroidal debris in DBZ white dwarfs.

We perform global time-dependent simulations of an accretion disc around a young stellar object with a dead zone (a region where the magneto-rotational instability cannot drive turbulence because the material is not sufficiently ionised). For infall accretion rates on to the disc of around 10 −7 M⊙ yr −1 , dead zones occur if the critical magnetic Reynolds number is larger than about 10 4 . We model the collapse of a molecular gas cloud. At early times when the infall accretion rate is high, the disc is thermally ionised and fully turbulent. However, as the infall accretion rate drops, a dead zone may form if the critical magnetic Reynolds number is sufficiently large, otherwise the disc remains fully turbulent. With a dead zone the disc can become unstable to the gravo-magneto instability. The mass of the star grows in large accretion outbursts that may explain FU Orionis events. At late times there is not sufficient mass in the disc for outbursts to occur but the dead zone becomes even more prominent as the disc cools. Large inner dead zones in the later stages of disc evolution may help to explain observations of transition discs with an inner hole.

We study the stability of disc accretion in the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi. We construct a one-dimensional time-dependent model of the binary-disc system, which includes viscous heating and radiative cooling and a self-consistent treatment of the binary potential. We find that the extended accretion disc in this system is always unstable to the thermal-viscous instability, and undergoes repeated disc outbursts on ~10-20yr time-scales. This is similar to the recurrence time-scale of observed outbursts in the RS Oph system, but we show that the disc's accretion luminosity during outburst is insufficient to explain the observed outbursts. We explore a range of models, and find that in most cases the accretion rate during outbursts reaches or exceeds the critical accretion rate for stable nuclear burning on the white dwarf surface. Consequently we suggest that a surface nuclear burning triggered by disc instability may be responsible for the observed outbursts. This allows the white dwarf mass to grow over time, and we suggest that disc instability in RS Oph and similar systems may represent a path to Type Ia supernovae.

We consider the interaction between a binary system (e.g. two supermassive black holes or two stars) and an external accretion disc with misaligned angular momentum. This situation occurs in galaxy merger events involving supermassive black holes, and in the formation of stellar--mass binaries in star clusters. We work out the gravitational torque between the binary and disc, and show that their angular momenta J_b, J_d stably counteralign if their initial orientation is sufficiently retrograde, specifically if the angle theta between them obeys cos(theta) < -J_d/2J_b, on a time short compared with the mass gain time of the central accretor(s). The magnitude J_b remains unchanged in this process. Counteralignment can promote the rapid merger of supermassive black hole binaries, and possibly the formation of coplanar but retrograde planets around stars in binary systems.

We perform calculations of isolated disc galaxies to investigate how the properties of the ISM, the nature of molecular clouds, and the global star formation rate depend on the level of stellar feedback. We adopt a simple physical model, which includes a galactic potential, a standard cooling and heating prescription of the ISM, and self gravity of the gas. Stellar feedback is implemented by injecting energy into dense, gravitationally collapsing gas, but is independent of the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation. We obtain fractions of gas, and filling factors for different phases of the ISM in reasonable ageement with observations. Supernovae are found to be vital to reproduce the scale heights of the different components of the ISM, and velocity dispersions. The GMCs formed in the simulations display mass spectra similar to the observations, their normalisation dependent on the level of feedback. We find ~40 per cent of the clouds exhibit retrograde rotation, induced by cloud-cloud collisions. The star formation rates we obtain are in good agreement with the observed Schmidt-Kennicutt relation, and are not strongly dependent on the star formation efficiency we assume, being largely self regulated by the feedback. We also investigate the effect of spiral structure by comparing calculations with and without the spiral component of the potential. The main difference with a spiral potential is that more massive GMCs are able to accumulate in the spiral arms. Thus we are able to reproduce massive GMCs, and the spurs seen in many grand design galaxies, even with stellar feedback. The presence of the spiral potential does not have an explicit effect on the star formation rate, but can increase the star formation rate indirectly by enabling the formation of long-lived, strongly bound clouds.

Rapidly rotating Be stars are observed as shell stars when the decretion disc is viewed edge on. Transitions between the two implies that the discs may be warped and precessing. Type II X-ray outbursts are thought to occur when the warped disc interacts with the fast stellar wind. We suggest that tides from a misaligned companion neutron star can cause the observed effects. We make numerical models of a Be star decretion disc in which the spin of the Be star is misaligned with the orbital axis of a neutron star companion. Tidal torques from the neutron star truncate the disc at a radius small enough that the neutron star orbit does not intersect the disc unless the eccentricity or misalignment is very large. A magnetic torque from the Be star that is largest at the equator, where the rotation is fastest, is approximated by an inner boundary condition. There are large oscillations in the mass and inclination of the disc as it moves towards a steady state. These large variations may explain the observed changes from Be star to Be shell star and vice-versa and also the Type II X-ray outbursts. We find the tidal timescale on which the disc warps, precesses and reaches a steady state to be around a year up to a few hundred years. If present, the oscillations in mass and disc inclination occur on a fraction of this timescale depending on the orbital parameters of the binary. The timescales associated with the tidal torque for observed Be star binaries suggest that these effects are important in all but the longest period binaries.

The most recent observational evidence seems to indicate that giant molecular clouds are predominantly gravitationally unbound objects. In this paper we show that this is a natural consequence of a scenario in which cloud-cloud collisions and stellar feedback regulate the internal velocity dispersion of the gas, and so prevent global gravitational forces from becoming dominant. Thus, while the molecular gas is for the most part gravitationally unbound, local regions within the denser parts of the gas (within the clouds) do become bound and are able to form stars. We find that the observations, in terms of distributions of virial parameters and cloud structures, can be well modelled provided that the star formation efficiency in these bound regions is of order 5 - 10 percent. We also find that in this picture the constituent gas of individual molecular clouds changes over relatively short time scales, typically a few Myr.

We investigate whether a circumbinary gas disc can coalesce a supermassive black hole binary system in the centre of a galaxy. This is known to be problematic for a prograde disc. We show that in contrast, interaction with a retrograde circumbinary disc is considerably more effective in shrinking the binary because there are no orbital resonances. The binary directly absorbs negative angular momentum from the circumbinary disc by capturing gas into a disc around the secondary black hole, or discs around both holes if the binary mass ratio is close to unity. In many cases the binary orbit becomes eccentric, shortening the pericentre distance as the eccentricity grows. In all cases the binary coalesces once it has absorbed the angular momentum of a gas mass comparable to that of the secondary black hole. Importantly, this conclusion is unaffected even if the gas inflow rate through the disc is formally super--Eddington for either hole. The coalescence timescale is therefore always $\sim M_2/\dot M$, where $M_2$ is the secondary black hole mass and $\dot M$ the inflow rate through the circumbinary disc.

The stellar origin of gamma-ray bursts can be explained by the rapid release of energy in a highly collimated, extremely relativistic jet. This in turn appears to require a rapidly spinning highly magnetised stellar core that collapses into a magnetic neutron star or a black hole within a relatively massive envelope. They appear to be associated with type Ib/c supernovae but, with a birthrate of around 10^{-6}-10^{-5} per year per galaxy, they are considerably rarer than such supernovae in general. To satisfy all these requirements we hypothesize a binary star model that ends with the merging of an oxygen neon white dwarf with the carbon-oxygen core of a naked helium star during a common envelope phase of evolution. The rapid spin and high magnetic field are natural consequences of such a merging. The evolution that leads to these progenitors is convoluted and so naturally occurs only very rarely. To test the hypothesis we evolve a population of progenitors and find that the rate is as required. At low metallicity we calculate that a similar fraction of stars evolve to this point and so would expect the gamma-ray burst rate to correlate with the star formation rate in any galaxy. This too is consistent with observations. These progenitors, being of intermediate mass, differ radically from the usually postulated high-mass stars. Thus we can reconcile observations that the bursts occur close to but not within massive star associations.

We consider models of gas flow in spiral galaxies in which the spiral structure has been excited by various possible mechanisms: a global steady density wave, self-gravity of the stellar disc and an external tidal interaction, as well as the case of a galaxy with a central rotating bar. In each model we estimate in a simple manner the likely current positions of star clusters of a variety of ages, ranging from ~ 2 Myr to around 130 Myr, depending on the model. We find that the spatial distribution of cluster of different ages varies markedly depending on the model, and propose that observations of the locations of age-dated stellar clusters is a possible discriminant between excitation mechanisms for spiral structure in an individual galaxy.

We consider the response of a protostellar disc to a tidally induced warp and the resultant changes in the spectral energy distribution (SED). We argue that for typical protostellar disc parameters the warp is communicated through the disc in a wave-like fashion. We find that the main effects of the warp tend to be at large radii (greater than 30 AU) and, for sufficiently small viscosity, can be quite long-lived. This can result in non-uniform illumination of the disc at these radii and can induce significant changes to the SED at wavelengths greater than 100 microns., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures. We present hydrodynamical models of the grand design spiral M51 (NGC 5194), and its interaction with its companion NGC 5195. Despite the simplicity of our models, our simulations capture the present day spiral structure of M51 remarkably well, and even reproduce details such as a kink along one spiral arm, and spiral arm bifurcations. We investigate the offset between the stellar and gaseous spiral arms, and find at most times (including the present day) there is no offset between the stars and gas to within our error bars. We also compare our simulations with recent observational analysis of M51. We compute the pattern speed versus radius, and like the observations, find no single global pattern speed. We also show that the spiral arms cannot be fitted well by logarithmic spirals. We interpret these findings as evidence that M51 does not exhibit a quasi-steady density wave, as would be predicted by density wave theory. The internal structure of M51 derives from the complicated and dynamical interaction with its companion, resulting in spiral arms showing considerable structure in the form of short-lived kinks and bifurcations. Rather than trying to model such galaxies in terms of global spiral modes with fixed pattern speeds, it is more realistic to start from a picture in which the spiral arms, while not being simple material arms, are the result of tidally induced kinematic density `waves' or density patterns, which wind up slowly over time.

The magnetic field structure of a protostar truncates the accretion disc at some magnetospheric radius greater than the stellar radius. If the stellar rotation axis is not aligned with the disc rotation then the magnetic stresses at this radius transfer misaligned angular momentum and so lead to a tilt in the inner disc. If the configuration and/or strength of the stellar field changes with time then the degree of induced tilt also changes. Under appropriate circumstances such m= 1 tilting motions of the disc can propagate outward through the disc as warp waves. These waves must damp as they approach the corotation radius where their frequency matches the local Keplerian frequency. If the waves propagate sufficiently far, then the disc heating that results from the wave damping can provide a dominant contribution to a local disc heating, and so cause a disc flaring. This flaring can in turn cause changes in the disc spectral energy distribution.

We consider the incidence of magnetism in main-sequence stars with mainly radiative envelopes. We propose that the small fraction, which increases with mass, of stars which are magnetic can be explained if towards the end of the formation process, after the stars have developed a substantial radiative envelope, a correspondingly small fraction of stars merge. Such late mergers would produce a brief period of strong differential rotation and give rise to large-scale fields in the radiative envelopes. Such late mergers can also account for the lack of close binaries among these stars.

We compute the effect of an orbiting gas disc in promoting the coalescence of a central supermassive black hole binary. Unlike earlier studies, we consider a finite mass of gas with explicit time dependence: we do not assume that the gas necessarily adopts a steady state or a spatially constant accretion rate, i.e. that the merging black hole was somehow inserted into a pre--existing accretion disc. We consider the tidal torque of the binary on the disc, and the binary's gravitational radiation. We study the effects of star formation in the gas disc in a simple energy feedback framework. The disc spectrum differs in detail from that found before. In particular, tidal torques from the secondary black hole heat the edges of the gap, creating bright rims around the secondary. These rims do not in practice have uniform brightness either in azimuth or time, but can on average account for as much as 50 per cent of the integrated light from the disc. This may lead to detectable high--photon--energy variability on the relatively long orbital timescale of the secondary black hole, and thus offer a prospective signature of a coalescing black hole binary. We also find that the disc can drive the binary to merger on a reasonable timescale only if its mass is at least comparable with that of the secondary black hole, and if the initial binary separation is relatively small, i.e. $a_0 \lesssim 0.05$ pc. Star formation complicates the merger further by removing mass from the disc. In the feedback model we consider, this sets an effective limit to the disc mass. As a result, binary merging is unlikely unless the black hole mass ratio is $\la 0.001$. We investigate the evolution of accretion luminosity $L_{\rm acc}$ and stellar luminosity ${L_\ast}$ in pre-mainsequence stars. We make the assumption that when the star appears as a Class II object, the major phase of accretion is long past, and the accretion disc has entered its asymptotic phase. We use an approximate stellar evolution scheme for accreting pre-mainsequence stars based on Hartmann, Cassen & Kenyon, 1997. We show that the observed range of values $k = L_{\rm acc}/L_\ast$ between 0.01 and 1 can be reproduced if the values of the disc mass fraction $M_{\rm disc}/M_*$ at the start of the T Tauri phase lie in the range 0.01 -- 0.2, independent of stellar mass. We also show that the observed upper bound of $L_{\rm acc} \sim L_\ast$ is a generic feature of such disc accretion. We conclude that as long as the data uniformly fills the region between this upper bound and observational detection thresholds, then the degeneracies between age, mass and accretion history severely limit the use of this data for constraining possible scalings between disc properties and stellar mass.

We argue that supermassive black hole growth in AGN occurs via sequences of randomly--oriented accretion discs with angular momentum limited by self--gravity. These stably co-- or counter--align with the black hole spin with almost equal frequency. Accretion from these discs very rapidly adjusts the hole's spin parameter to average values $\bar a \sim 0.1-0.3$ (the precise range depending slightly on the disc vertical viscosity coefficient $\alpha_2$) from any initial conditions, but with significant fluctuations ($\Delta a\sim \pm 0.2$) about these. We conclude (a) AGN black holes should on average spin moderately, with the mean value $\bar a$ decreasing slowly as the mass increases; (b) SMBH coalescences leave little long--term effect on $\bar a$; (c) SMBH coalescence products in general have modest recoil velocities, so that there is little likelihood of their being ejected from the host galaxy; (d) black holes can grow even from stellar masses to $\sim 5\times 10^9 \msun$ at high redshift $z\sim 6$; (e) jets produced in successive accretion episodes can have similar directions, but after several episodes the jet direction deviates significantly. Rare examples of massive holes with larger spin parameters could result from prograde coalescences with SMBH of similar mass, and are most likely to be found in giant ellipticals. In this paper we explore numerically the evolution of a warped accretion disc. Here, we focus here on the regime where the warp evolves diffusively. By comparing the numerical results to a simple diffusion model, we are able to determine the diffusion coefficient of the warp, $\alpha_2$, as a function of the relevant disc parameters. We find that while in general the disc behaviour is well reproduced by the diffusion model and for relatively large viscosities the warp diffusion is well described by the linear theory (in particular confirming that the warp diffusion coefficient is inversely proportional to viscosity), significant non-linear effects are present as the viscosity becomes smaller, but still dominates over wave-propagation effects. In particular, we find that the inverse dependence of the diffusion coefficient on viscosity breaks down at low viscosities, so that $\alpha_2$ never becomes larger than a saturation value $\alpha_{\rm max}$ of order unity. This can have major consequences in the evolution of systems where a warped disc is present. In particular, it affects the location of the warp radius in the Bardeen-Petterson effect and therefore the spin up (or spin down) of supermassive black holes in the nuclei of galaxies. Additionally, we also find that while the rate of warp diffusion does not depend significantly on the detailed viscosity formulation, the rate of internal precession generated by the warp is strongly affected by it. Such effects should be considered with care when modeling the evolution of warped discs. This emphasises the need to test the above results using different numerical schemes, and with higher resolution, in order to investigate the degree to which numerical simulations are able to provide accurate modeling of the complex fluid dynamics of warped discs. There is evidence for the existence of massive planets at orbital radii of several hundred AU from their parent stars where the timescale for planet formation by core accretion is longer than the disc lifetime. These planets could have formed close to their star and then migrated outwards. We consider how the transfer of angular momentum by viscous disc interactions from a massive inner planet could cause significant outward migration of a smaller outer planet. We find that it is in principle possible for planets to migrate to large radii. We note, however, a number of effects which may render the process somewhat problematic., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the contamination of the B-mode of the cosmic microwave background polarization (CMBP) by Galactic synchrotron in the lowest emission regions of the sky. The 22.8-GHz polarization map of the 3-yr Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data release is used to identify and analyse such regions. Two areas are selected with signal-to-noise ratio S/N 0.3). Such regions allow T/S similar to 10(-3) to be measured directly which approximately corresponds to the limit imposed by using a sky coverage of 15 per cent. This opens interesting perspectives on the investigation of the inflationary model space in lowest emission regions.

We present Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of molecular cloud formation in spiral galaxies. These simulations model the response of a non-self-gravitating gaseous disk to a galactic potential. The spiral shock induces high densities in the gas, and considerable structure in the spiral arms, which we identify as molecular clouds. We regard the formation of these structures as due to the dynamics of clumpy shocks, which perturb the flow of gas through the spiral arms. In addition, the spiral shocks induce a large velocity dispersion in the spiral arms, comparable with the magnitude of the velocity dispersion observed in molecular clouds. We estimate the formation of molecular hydrogen, by post-processing our results and assuming the gas is isothermal. Provided the gas is cold ($T\le100$ K), the gas is compressed sufficiently in the spiral shock for molecular hydrogen formation to occur in the dense spiral arm clumps. These molecular clouds are largely confined to the spiral arms, since most molecular gas is photodissociated to atomic hydrogen upon leaving the arms., 13 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

An unsolved issue in the standard core accretion model for gaseous planet formation is how kilometre-sized planetesimals form from, initially, micron-sized dust grains. Solid growth beyond metre sizes can be difficult both because the sticking efficiency becomes very small, and because these particles should rapidly migrate into the central star. We consider here how metre-sized particles evolve in self-gravitating accretion discs using simulations in which the gravitational influence of the solid particles is also included. Metre-sized particles become strongly concentrated in the spiral structures present in the disc and, if the solid to gas density ratio is sufficiently high, can fragment due to their own self-gravity to form planetesimals directly. This result suggests that planetesimal formation may occur very early in the star formation process while discs are still massive enough to be self-gravitating. The dependence of this process on the surface density of the solids is also consistent with the observation that extrasolar planets are preferentially found around high metallicity stars., 5 pages, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We consider the formation and evolution of the planetary system PSR B1620-26 in the globular cluster M4. We propose that as M4 is a very-low metallicity environment the standard model of planet formation around main-sequence stars through the accretion of gas onto metallic rocky cores should not be applied. Consequently the previously suggested methods for formation are unlikely. We propose that the planet formed through the interaction of a passing star with a circumbinary disc during the common-envelope phase of the inner binary's evolution. Most mechanisms proposed for the formation of planets are modified versions of the mechanism proposed for the solar system. Here we argue that, in terms of those planetary systems which have been observed, the case for the solar system being a typical planetary system has yet to be established. We consider the possibility that most observed planetary systems have been formed in some quite different way. We propose a new model for the disk-jet connection in black hole x-ray transients and active galactic nuclei. In our model, the inner part of the accretion disk around the central black hole switches between two states. In one state, the accretion energy is dissipated locally (some within the disk, some within a corona) to produce the observed disk luminosity. In the second state, the accretion energy is deposited into the bulk flow of a relativistic jet. We associate the transition between the two states with the generation of a global, poloidal magnetic field. We show that this model can explain the observed behavior of black hole accretors.

We study the viscous effects on the interaction between the coplanar Be-star disc and the neutron star in Be/X-ray binaries, using a three-dimensional, smoothed particle hydrodynamics code. For simplicity, we assume the Be disc to be isothermal at the temperature of half the stellar effective temperature. In order to mimic the gas ejection process from the Be star, we inject particles with the Keplerian rotation velocity at a radius just outside the star. Both Be star and neutron star are treated as point masses. We find that the Be-star disc is effectively truncated if the Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter alpha_SS >> 1, which confirms the previous semi-analytical result. In the truncated disc, the material decreted from the Be star accumulates, so that the disc becomes denser more rapidly than if around an isolated Be star. The resonant truncation of the Be disc results in a significant reduction of the amount of gas captured by the neutron star and a strong dependence of the mass capture rate on the orbital phase. We also find that an eccentric mode is excited in the Be disc through direct driving due to a one-armed bar potential of the binary. The strength of the mode becomes greater in the case of a smaller viscosity. In a high-resolution simulation with alpha_SS=0.1, the eccentric mode is found to precess in a prograde sense. We use HST broad band images, VLA and VLBI continuum data to study the three dimensional orientation of jets relative to nuclear dust disks in 20 radio galaxies. The comparison between the position angles of the jets with those of the dust disks major axes shows a wide distribution, suggesting that they are not aligned preferentially perpendicular to each other. We use a statistical technique to determine the 3 dimensional distribution of angles between jets and dust disks rotation axes. This analysis shows that the observations are consistent with jets homogeneously distributed over a large region, extending over polar caps of 55 degrees to 77 degrees, but seem to avoid lying close to the plane of the dust disks. We argue that the lack of close alignment between jets and dust disks axes is not likely to be caused by feeding the nucleus with gas from mergers originated from random directions. We suggest that the misalignment can be due by a warping mechanism in the accretion disk, like self-irradiation instability or the Bardeen-Petterson effect, or that the gravitational potential in the inner regions of the galaxy is misaligned with respect to that of the dust disk., 15 pages, to appear in The Astrophysical Journal v575, August 10, 2002 issue

Using current observational data and simple dynamical modeling, we demonstrate that Omega Cen is not special among the Galactic globular clusters in its ability to produce and retain the heavy elements dispersed in the AGB phase of stellar evolution. The multiple stellar populations observed in Omega Cen cannot be explained if it had formed as an isolated star cluster. The formation within a progenitor galaxy of the Milky Way is more likely, although the unique properties of Omega Cen still remain a mystery., published version with minor changes
