1. Observational constraints on f(T) gravity from model-independent data

Abstract: Abstract We establish new constraints on f(T) gravity models by using cosmological data. In particular, we investigate the restrictions given by the gas mass fraction measurements of galaxy clusters and transversal BAO data. Both data sets are regarded as weakly dependent on a fiducial cosmology. In addition, we also include a CMB measurement of the temperature power spectrum first peak, along with H(z) values from cosmic chronometers and supernovae data from the Pantheon data set. We also perform a forecast for future constraints on the deviation of f(T) models from the $$\Lambda $$ Λ CDM scenario by following the specifications of the J-PAS and Euclid surveys and find significant improvements on the constraints of the b-parameter, when compared to the results of the statistical analysis.

Abstract: Abstract A new method based on large scale structure observations is proposed to probe a possible temporal variation of the fine-structure constant ( $$\alpha $$ α ). Our analyses are based on time-delay of Strong Gravitational Lensing and Type Ia Supernovae observations. By considering the runaway dilaton scenario, where the cosmological temporal evolution of the fine-structure constant is given by $$\frac{\Delta \alpha }{\alpha } \approx -\gamma \ln {(1+z)}$$ Δ α α ≈ - γ ln ( 1 + z ) , we obtain limits on the physical properties parameter of the model ( $$\gamma $$ γ ) at the level $$10^{-2}$$ 10 - 2 ( $$1\sigma $$ 1 σ ). Although our limits are less restrictive than those obtained by quasar spectroscopy, the approach presented here provides new bounds on the possibility of $$\frac{\Delta \alpha }{\alpha } \ne 0$$ Δ α α ≠ 0 at a different range of redshifts.

3. Physical constraints on interacting dark energy models

Abstract: Abstract Physical limits on the equation-of-state (EoS) parameter of a dark energy component non-minimally coupled with the dark matter field are examined in light of the second law of thermodynamics and the positiveness of entropy. Such constraints are combined with observational data sets of type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations and the angular acoustic scale of the cosmic microwave background to impose restrictions on the behaviour of the dark matter/dark energy interaction. Considering two EoS parameterisations of the type $$w = w_0 + w_a\zeta (z)$$ w=w0+waζ(z) , we derive a general expression for the evolution of the dark energy density and show that the combination of thermodynamic limits and observational data provide tight bounds on the $$w_0 - w_a$$ w0-wa parameter space.

4. Side effects of different pesticides used in citrus on the adult stage of the parasitoid Aphytis melinus DeBach (Hymenoptera Aphelinidae) and its progeny

Abstract: Twelve pesticides commonly used in citrus in Spain were tested on adults of Aphytis melinus DeBach to determine their effects on parasitoid survival and fecundity, and the duration of the residue of each pesticide. Six of these pesticides were found to be harmless to moderately harmful to this parasitoid in a laboratory assay in closed Petri dishes: spinosad (bait formulation), azadirachtin, fenbutatin, fosetyl-Al, copper oxichloride, and mancozeb, with their scores on the reduction of beneficial capacity (RBC) index being between 21.4 and 94.6% after one week. The other six pesticides classified as harmful were tested on citrus plants to study their persistence over time under greenhouse conditions: Pirimicarb, pyriproxifen, paraffinic oil, abamectin, chlorpyrifos, and lambda-cyhalothrin. Most of these products reduced their negative effect on adults of A. melinus between one and six weeks after treatment, although lambda-cyhalothrin was still harmful to parasitoids 11 weeks after application. This information can help growers and consultants to make decisions about pesticide selection and application timing in citrus in order to support IPM implementation when A. melinus is present.

5. Cardiac injury before and after COVID-19. A longitudinal MRI study

Abstract: Background Recent MRI-based studies have raised great concern about frequent cardiac involvement even in mild or asymptomatic COVID-19. However, while signs of myocardial injury were found in large proportions of patients after COVID-19, all studies published to date lack baseline imaging and are therefore unable to discriminate between pre-existing and COVID-19-induced injury. Purpose In this longitudinal study, we aimed to assess the true cardiac impact of COVID-19 based on pre- and post-COVID-19 late gadolinium enhancement (LGE)-MRI. Methods A prospective registry of patients with serial LGE-MRIs was screened for patients with documented SARS-COV-2 infection after cardiac LGE-MRI. Eligible patients then received a post-COVID-19 LGE-MRI using the same scanner and sequence as in the pre-COVID-19 MRI. Inversion recovery prepared T1-weighted gradient echo sequences were acquired in sinus rhythm using ECG gating and a free-breathing 3D navigator, 15–20 minutes after administering an intravenous bolus of 0.2 mmol/kg of gadobutrol. A TI scout sequence was used in order to determine the optimal TI that nullified the left ventricular myocardial signal. The presence of LGE was independently assessed qualitatively by two experienced investigators blinded to patient information. For quantitative analyses a 3D-reconstruction of the left ventricle was performed using ADAS-3D software. LGE was then automatically quantified based on a prespecified signal intensity threshold of ≥3 SD above the mean of a remote non-enhanced myocardial region. Results Pre- and post-COVID LGE-MRI from 31 patients with cardiovascular risk factors that had recovered from mild to moderate COVID-19 (23% hospitalised) were analysed. At a median of 5 months post-COVID-19, LGE-lesions indicative of myocardial injury were encountered in 15 out of 31 patients (48%), which is in line with previous reports. However, intraindividual comparison with the pre-COVID-19 MRI reveiled all of these lesions as pre-existing and thus not COVID-19-related. Quantitative analysis detected no increase in the size of individual LGE-lesions, nor in the global left ventricular LGE-extent. There was no difference in any functional or structural parameter between pre- and post-COVID-19 MRI. Conclusion This longitudinal study in a cohort of patients considered at high risk of cardiac involvement, did not find any evidence for COVID-19-induced myocardial injury. The complete absence of de novo LGE lesions in this cohort is reassuring and indicates that cardiac sequelae of COVID-19 are rare and certainly not as common as previously suggested. 8. Sudden branch macular artery avulsion during internal limiting membrane peeling for idiopathic macular hole: A case report

Abstract: Macular Holes (MH) are variable thickness openings of the retina that develop in the fovea. This case presents a branch macular artery avulsion during internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling for idiopathic macular hole management in an adult patient. The proper management of this complication along with the preventive measures is mentioned.A 65-year-old woman developed a branch macular artery avulsion during ILM peeling for MH. After cataract extraction by phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation and pars plana vitrectomy, during ILM peeling, a multifocal bleeding along a macular artery was noted indicating its avulsion. The intraocular pressure was raised to control hemorrhage, blood remnants were passively aspirated and ILM peeling was kindly completed under adequate visualization.Branch macular artery avulsion is a potential complication even for experienced surgeons. Proper management of this complication involves the increase of intraocular pressure for hemostasia. If hemostasia and proper visualization are achieved, the surgery could be completed, and if it is not the case, the ILM peeling could be completed in a second procedure. This complication might be avoided by initiating the ILM peeling away from the macular vessels.Branch macular artery avulsion is an intraoperative complication that might be avoided by initiating the ILM peeling away from the macular vessels.

Abstract: The results of joint analyses of available cosmological data have motivated an important debate about a possible detection of a non-zero spatial curvature. If confirmed, such a result would imply a change in our present understanding of cosmic evolution with important theoretical and observational consequences. In this paper we discuss the legitimacy of carrying out joint analyses with the currently available data sets and explore their implications for a non-flat universe and extensions of the standard cosmological model. We use a robust tension estimator to perform a quantitative analysis of the physical consistency between the latest data of Cosmic Microwave Background, type Ia supernovae, Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations and Cosmic Chronometers. We consider the flat and non-flat cases of the $\Lambda$CDM cosmology and of two dark energy models with a constant and varying dark energy EoS parameter. The present study allows us to better understand if possible inconsistencies between these data sets are significant enough to make the results of their joint analyses misleading, as well as the actual dependence of such results with the spatial curvature and dark energy parameterizations., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Abstract: In this paper, we present a unified scheme based on the fluid description of the dark sector of the universe. The scheme captures models with interaction between dark energy and dark matter, being the core of generalization the time-varying equation-of-state parameter $\omega(a)$ and the time-dependent interactions through the interaction function $\epsilon(a)$, where $a$ is the scale factor. Furthermore, we propose thermodynamics constraints on this generalized class of models using the laws of thermodynamics which are combined with observational data. Abstract: Background Escalating interior immigration enforcement by the Trump administration threatens U.S. Latino immigrant families, yet systematic evidence is limited regarding the impacts of immigration enforcement in this community. Our study explored lived experiences of U.S.-citizen adolescents affected by various levels of immigration enforcement, including parental deportation. Methods In-depth interviews were conducted with adolescents (13-17 years old, N = 7) who experienced-or were at risk of-parental deportation as part of a larger, on-going longitudinal study. Interviews queried after their health, family life, perceived discrimination, conceptualization of today's anti-immigrant climate and, if applicable, the circumstances and impact of their parent's deportation. A preliminary qualitative analysis of the interviews was conducted. Interview summaries were created and reviewed systematically. Major themes and qualitative assertions were derived and discussed by the analytical team. Results Parental detainment/deportation was inherently violent and traumatic and had profound mental/emotional, physical, socio-cultural and economic consequences for separated adolescents as they assumed adult roles and responsibilities. The threat of deportation negatively affected the well-being of adolescents with deportable parents, resulting in increased vigilance and stress. Participants were ambivalent regarding their desire to talk about the risk of deportation or their experiences with it, as well as their own identities as Latinx citizens. They also reported feelings of isolation, discrimination and victimization related to immigration enforcement. Conclusions Anticipated and experienced parental deportation negatively affects health and well-being among U.S.-citizen adolescents. Family-friendly immigration policies, community-based interventions, and family counseling are critical to protect this vulnerable population. Key messages Following deportation, the deportee’s family—especially their U.S.-citizen adolescents—are profoundly and negatively affected. Even the threat of deportation stresses adolescents and their families and results in negative psychosocial outcomes.

Abstract: We present an update on CRDB, the cosmic-ray database for charged species. CRDB is based on MySQL, queried and sorted by jquery and table-sorter libraries, and displayed via PHP web pages through the AJAX protocol. We review the modifications made on the structure and outputs of the database since the first release (Maurin et al., 2014). For this update, the most important feature is the inclusion of ultra-heavy nuclei ( Z &gt, 30 ), ultra-high energy nuclei (from 10 15 to 10 20 eV), and limits on antinuclei fluxes ( Z ≤ − 1 for A &gt, 1 ), more than 100 experiments, 350 publications, and 40,000 data points are now available in CRDB. M.; Santos da Costa, S.; Telles, E., The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will scan thousands of square degrees of the northern sky with a unique set of 56 filters using the dedicated 2:55m Javalambre Survey Telescope (JST) at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory. Prior to the installation of the main camera (4:2 deg2 field-of-view with 1.2 Gpixels), the JST was equipped with the JPAS-Pathfinder, a one CCD camera with a 0:3 deg2 field-of-view and plate scale of 0.23 arcsec pixel?1. To demonstrate the scientific potential of J-PAS, the JPAS-Pathfinder camera was used to perform miniJPAS, a _1 deg2 survey of the AEGIS field (along the Extended Groth Strip). The field was observed with the 56 J-PAS filters, which include 54 narrow band (FWHM _ 145 ) and two broader filters extending to the UV and the near-infrared, complemented by the u; g; r; i SDSS broad band filters. In this miniJPAS survey overview paper, we present the miniJPAS data set (images and catalogs), as we highlight key aspects and applications of these unique spectro-photometric data and describe how to access the public data products. The data parameters reach depths of magAB ' 22?23:5 in the 54 narrow band filters and up to 24 in the broader filters (5_ in a 300 aperture). The miniJPAS primary catalog contains more than 64 000 sources detected in the r band and with matched photometry in all other bands. This catalog is 99% complete at r = 23:6 (r = 22:7) mag for point-like (extended) sources. We show that our photometric redshifts have an accuracy better than 1% for all sources up to r = 22:5, and a precision of _0:3% for a subset consisting of about half of the sample. On this basis, we outline several scientific applications of our data, including the study of spatially-resolved stellar populations of nearby galaxies, the analysis of the large scale structure up to z _ 0:9, and the detection of large numbers of clusters and groups. Sub-percent redshift precision can also be reached for quasars, allowing for the study of the large-scale structure to be pushed to z 2. The miniJPAS survey demonstrates the capability of the J-PAS filter system to accurately characterize a broad variety of sources and paves the way for the upcoming arrival of J-PAS, which will multiply this data by three orders of magnitude. © 2021 EDP Sciences. 14. A model-independent reconstruction of dark sector interactions

Abstract: Relaxing the conventional assumption of a minimal coupling between the dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE) fields introduces significant changes in the predicted evolution of the Universe. Therefore, testing such a possibility constitutes an essential task not only for cosmology but also for fundamental physics. In a previous communication [Phys. Rev. D99, 043521, 2019], we proposed a new null test for the $\Lambda$CDM model based on the time dependence of the ratio between the DM and DE energy densities which is also able to detect potential signatures of interaction between the dark components. In this work, we extend that analysis avoiding the $ \Lambda$CDM assumption and reconstruct the interaction in the dark sector in a fully model-independent way using data from type Ia supernovae, cosmic chronometers and baryonic acoustic oscillations. According to our analysis, the $\Lambda$CDM model is consistent with our model-independent approach at least at $3\sigma$ CL over the entire range of redshift studied. On the other hand, our analysis shows that the current background data do not allow us to rule out the existence of an interaction in the dark sector. Finally, we present a forecast for next-generation LSS surveys. In particular, we show that Euclid and SKA will be able to distinguish interacting models with about 4\% of precision at $z\approx 1$., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Abstract: In this paper, we discuss a model-independent way to obtain the present dark matter density parameter ($\Omega_{\rm{c,0}}$) by combining gas mass fraction measurements in galaxy clusters ($f_{gas}$), type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) observations and measurements of the cosmic baryon abundance from observations of absorption systems at high redshifts. Our estimate is $\Omega_{\rm{c,0}} = 0.244 \pm 0.013$ ($1\sigma$). By considering the latest local measurement of the Hubble constant, we obtain $\Omega_{\rm{M,0}} = 0.285 \pm 0.013$ ($1\sigma$) for the total matter density parameter. We also investigate departures of the evolution of the dark matter density with respect to the usual $a^{-3}$ scaling, as usual in interacting models of dark matter and dark energy. As the current data cannot confirm or rule out such an interaction, we perform a forecast analysis to estimate the necessary improvements in number and accuracy of upcoming $f_{gas}$ and SNe Ia observations to detect a possible non-minimal coupling in the cosmological dark sector., Comment: JCAP Accepted, 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: Since there is no known symmetry in Nature that prevents a non-minimal coupling between the dark energy (DE) and cold dark matter (CDM) components, such a possibility constitutes an alternative to standard cosmology, with its theoretical and observational consequences being of great interest. In this paper we propose a new null test on the standard evolution of the dark sector based on the time dependence of the ratio between the CDM and DE energy densities which, in the standard $\Lambda$CDM scenario, scales necessarily as $a^{-3}$. We use the latest measurements of type Ia supernovae, cosmic chronometers and angular baryonic acoustic oscillations to reconstruct the expansion history using model-independent Machine Learning techniques, namely, the Linear Model formalism and Gaussian Processes. We find that while the standard evolution is consistent with the data at $3\sigma$ level, some deviations from the $\Lambda$CDM model are found at low redshifts, which may be associated with the current tension between local and global determinations of $H_0$., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: We describe an experiment to access the onset of cracks in brick structural elements by means of arrays of the optical fibers attached to the surface of the elements. The opening of a crack leads to the fracture of the optical fiber that crosses the crack, thus witnessing its appearance. The detection of cracks of a width of about 1 mm was successfully conducted with the communications-grade multimode silica optical fibers. The optical transmission of all optical fibers of the array was continuously monitored by means of the multichannel optical transmitter and receiver. Our results demonstrate that the optical fibers served as reliable indicators of structural damage in form of cracks to brick masonry. We consider some practical aspects of implementing this method for monitoring the appearance of cracks in brick masonry buildings, which present structural risks.

Abstract: The analysis of perturbative quantities is a powerful tool to distinguish between different Dark Energy models and gravity theories degenerated at the background level. In this work, we generalise the integral solution of the matter density contrast for General Relativity gravity to a wide class of Modified Gravity (MG) theories. To calculate this solution is necessary prior knowledge of the Hubble rate, the density parameter at the present epoch ($\Omega_{m0}$) and the functional form of the effective Newton's constant that characterises the gravity theory. We estimate in a model-independent way the Hubble expansion rate by applying a non-parametric reconstruction method to model-independent cosmic chronometer data and high-$z$ quasar data. In order to compare our generalised solution of the matter density contrast, using the non-parametric reconstruction of $H(z)$ from observational data, with purely theoretical one, we choose a parameterisation of the Screened MG and the $\Omega_{m0}$ from WMAP-9 collaborations. Finally, we calculate the growth index for the analysed cases, finding very good agreement between theoretical values and the obtained ones using the approach presented in this work., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The existing degeneracy between different dark energy and modified gravity cosmologies at the background level may be broken by analysing quantities at the perturbative level. In this work, we apply a non-parametric smoothing (NPS) method to reconstruct the expansion history of the Universe ($H(z)$) from model-independent cosmic chronometers and high-$z$ quasar data. Assuming a homogeneous and isotropic flat universe and general relativity (GR) as the gravity theory, we calculate the non-relativistic matter perturbations in the linear regime using the $H(z)$ reconstruction and realistic values of $\Omega_{m0}$ and $\sigma_8$ from Planck and WMAP-9 collaborations. We find a good agreement between the measurements of the growth rate and $f\sigma_8(z)$ from current large-scale structure observations and the estimates obtained from the reconstruction of the cosmic expansion history. Considering a recently proposed null test for GR using matter perturbations, we also apply the NPS method to reconstruct $f\sigma_8(z)$. Abstract: The evolution of the X-ray emitting gas mass fraction ($f_{gas}$) in massive galaxy clusters can be used as an independent cosmological tool to probe the expansion history of the Universe. Its use, however, depends upon a crucial quantity, i.e., the depletion factor $\gamma$, which corresponds to the ratio by which $f_{gas}$ is depleted with respect to the universal baryonic mean. This quantity is not directly observed and hydrodynamical simulations performed in a specific cosmological model (e.g., a flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmology) have been used to calibrate it. In this work, we obtain for the first time self-consistent observational constraints on the gas depletion factor combining 40 X-ray emitting gas mass fraction measurements and luminosity distance measurements from type Ia supernovae. Using Gaussian Processes to reconstruct a possible redshift evolution of $\gamma$, we find no evidence for such evolution, which confirms the current results from hydrodynamical simulations. Moreover, our constraints on $\gamma$ can be seen as a data prior for cosmological analyses on different cosmological models. Abstract: We describe a sensor system for damage detection in concrete structures after extreme events such as earthquakes. The system employs large array of optical fibres (up to 256 fibres) that are either embedded in, or bonded to the surface of the structural element or elements under test. A structural damage (cracks or complete failure) results in breaking of one or several optical fibres and sharp decrease in their optical transmission. The fibres are interrogated using a matrix-type optical fibre circuit with 16 optical transmitters and 16 optical receivers that operate in the TDM mode. This type of system can be used for monitoring of large arrays of other intensity-type optical sensors.

Assuming realistic values for the matter density parameter $\Omega_{m0}$, as provided by current CMB experiments, we also reconstruct the evolution of the growth index $\gamma$ with redshift. Abstract: Mobile populations are at increased risk for HIV infection. Exposure to HIV prevention messages at all phases of the migration process may help decrease im/migrants’ HIV risk. We investigated levels of exposure to HIV prevention messages, factors associated with message exposure, and the association between exposure to prevention messages and HIV testing behavior among Mexican im/migrants at different phases of the migration process. We conducted a cross-sectional, probability survey of Mexican im/migrants (N=3,149) traveling through the border city of Tijuana, Mexico. The results indicate limited exposure to prevention messages (57%–75%) and suboptimal last 12-month HIV testing rates (14%–25%) across five migration phases. Abstract: The cause for the decrease in light transmission in optical fibers embedded in reinforced concrete beams with flexural deformation was investigated. It was determined that optical fibers in such beams have multiple bends as a result of chaotic movement of gravel particles during the shrinkage of the concrete mixture. The results of field and model experiments are presented, which indicate that the probable reasons for the decrease in light transmission in optical fibers embedded in reinforced concrete beams, observed when the latter are bent, are local changes in the parameters of the optical fibers in regions with sharp bends accompanying beam deformation.

Abstract: We apply two methods, namely the Gaussian processes and the non-parametric smoothing procedure, to reconstruct the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ as a function of redshift from 15 measurements of the expansion rate obtained from age estimates of passively evolving galaxies. These reconstructions enable us to derive the luminosity distance to a certain redshift $z$, calibrate the light-curve fitting parameters accounting for the (unknown) intrinsic magnitude of type Ia supernova (SNe Ia) and construct cosmological model-independent Hubble diagrams of SNe Ia. In order to test the compatibility between the reconstructed functions of $H(z)$, we perform a statistical analysis considering the latest SNe Ia sample, the so-called JLA compilation. We find that, for the Gaussian processes, the reconstructed functions of Hubble parameter versus redshift, and thus the following analysis on SNe Ia calibrations and cosmological implications, are sensitive to prior mean functions. However, for the non-parametric smoothing method, the reconstructed functions are not dependent on initial guess models, and consistently require high values of $H_0$, which are in excellent agreement with recent measurements of this quantity from Cepheids and other local distance indicators., 10 pages, 3 figures, Latex (Accepted for publication in Physical Review D)

Abstract: We present results of an ongoing study of structural health monitoring of concrete elements by means of arrays of telecommunications-grade optical fibers embedded in such elements. In this work, we show a possibility of using this technique for monitoring the transverse displacement of the reinforced concrete beams under flexural loading. We embedded a number of multimode silica-core/polymer-clad/polymer-coated optical fibers in a mold with preinstalled reinforcing steel bars and fresh concrete mix. Then the concrete was compacted and cured. Some optical fibers were broken during the fabrication process. The fiber survival rate varied with concrete grade, compacting technique and optical fiber type. The fibers that survived the fabrication process were employed for the monitoring. They were connected to the optical transmitter and receiver that formed a part of a larger measurement system. The system continuously measured the optical transmission of all optical fibers while the reinforced concrete beams were subjected to incremental transverse loading. We observed a quasi-linear decrease in optical transmission in all optical fibers of the array vs. the applied load and respective flexural displacement. Although the underlying phenomena that lead to such a variation in optical transmission are not clear yet, the observed behavior might be of interest for assessing the transverse displacement of the reinforced concrete beams under flexural loading.

Abstract: We measured the sizes and morphological parameters of LARS galaxies in the continuum, Lya, and Ha images. We studied morphology by using the Gini coefficient vs M20 and asymmetry vs concentration diagrams. We then simulated LARS galaxies at z~2 and 5.7, performing the same morphological measurements. We also investigated the detectability of LARS galaxies in current deep field observations. The subsample of LAEs within LARS (LARS-LAEs) was stacked to provide a comparison to stacking studies performed at high redshift. Abstract: In a system of deconfined quarks and gluons heavy quarkonium states are expected to be the subject of dissociation via static mechanisms such as colour screening or dynamic mechanisms such as gluon scatterings. This leads to a suppression of hidden charm states, such as J/ψ. On the other hand, statistical hadronization models predict an enhanced production of hidden charm states for sufficiently high charm densities. We present first preliminary STAR results on J/ψ production via the reconstruction of electron–positron decay pairs in p + p and Au + Au collisions at . The implications of our measurements to models that predict copious J/ψ production via statistical hadronization are discussed.

Abstract: We present first measurements of the pseudorapidity and azimuth $(\eta,\phi)$ bin-size dependence of event-wise mean transverse momentum $ $ fluctuations for Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV. We invert that dependence to obtain $p_t$ autocorrelations on differences $(\eta_\Delta,\phi_\Delta)$ interpreted to represent velocity/temperature distributions on ($\eta,\phi$). The general form of the autocorrelations suggests that the basic correlation mechanism is parton fragmentation. The autocorrelations vary strongly with collision centrality, which suggests that fragmentation is strongly modified by a dissipative medium in the more central Au-Au collisions relative to peripheral or p-p collisions. \\

Abstract: We report the STAR measurement of ϕ meson production in Au + Au and p + p collisions at s N N = 200 GeV . Using the event mixing technique, the ϕ spectra and yields are obtained at mid-rapidity for five centrality bins in Au + Au collisions and for non-singly-diffractive p + p collisions. It is found that the ϕ transverse momentum distributions from Au + Au collisions are better fitted with a single-exponential while the p + p spectrum is better described by a double-exponential distribution. The measured nuclear modification factors indicate that ϕ production in central Au + Au collisions is suppressed relative to peripheral collisions when scaled by the number of binary collisions ( 〈 N bin 〉 ) . The systematics of 〈 p t 〉 versus centrality and the constant ϕ / K − ratio versus beam species, centrality, and collision energy rule out kaon coalescence as the dominant mechanism for ϕ production.

Abstract: An overview of the strangeness measurements made by the STAR collaboration at RHIC for Au-Au collisions at √s NN = 130 and 200 GeV plus p-p collisions at √s NN = 200 GeV is presented. A wealth of information has been generated on the kinematics and scale of strange particle production by this experiment. When viewed in combination a picture emerges of particles demonstrating a surprisingly high degree of collective motion, suggestive of strong internal pressure within the source which builds up rapidly. The non-resonance yields are consistent with statistical hadron formation. Although there appears to be a rapid decoupling of the source, resonance particle measurements show signs of rescattering during the hadronic phase. Meanwhile the observed suppression of high momentum probes and their large azimuthal asymmetry indicate that this hot dense matter has significant interactions with particles moving through it.

This software has been designed for engineering students in order to facilitate the understanding of how the error correcting codes work. To help students understand easily the concepts related to these kinds of codes, a user-friendly interface has been developed using the MATLAB environment, since it provides many toolboxes related to communication systems.

Abstract: This article argues that Internet-based survey research studies are presently limited in their utility. What many consider "classical" blunders in political polling that took place in the 1930s are used as a vehicle for describing parallel methodological errors that may occur with present-day use of the Internet. Without thoughtful protocols, Internet-based surveys are susceptible to these familiar errors, which limit their predictive utility. Tools such as e-mail, file transfers, and data and information access/retrieval should continue to be the primary role of Internet use. A model that articulates the use of Internet technology in survey research is offered for consideration.

36. Structural health monitoring of concrete elements with embedded arrays of optical fibers

Abstract: An optical-fiber sensor system for structural health monitoring of concrete elements such as beams and columns is presented. The system employs arrays of conventional optical fibers embedded in the concrete elements as crack sensors. Twelve types of optical fibers as well as several embedding techniques have been tested for this role. The survival rate of optical fibers embedded in concrete could be as high as 80%. The loss of fibers during the embedding process was acceptable provided that the number of fibers in the array had redundancy. The optical transmission of all fibers in the array was monitored in a time-division multiplexed mode at a high repetition rate, in the kHz range. The monitoring scheme allowed a quasi-continuous data acquisitions of large optical fiber arrays. A sharp decrease in the optical transmission of one or more optical fibers was a clear indicator of the development of cracking in the element subjected to flexural loads. The system was successful in detecting not only the initiation but also the propagation of cracks in concrete elements subjected to incremental flexural loading. In this work, the relation between the mechanical properties of the optical fibers and their behavior for the described application is discussed. Also, considerations towards a rational design of the system are proposed. The damage detection system may be used for the mapping and monitoring of cracks in concrete elements. The simplicity of the operation and relatively low cost of the proposed system make it a great candidate for applications in structural health monitoring of critical elements in civil infrastructure.

Abstract: Deposits of birefringent calcium oxalate crystals in the breast constitute a mammographically detectable but often histologically overlooked form of calcification. Unstained by routine dyes, these deposits are important as a cause of discrepant radiographic and microscopic biopsy findings. To elucidate the pathologic changes that give rise to these crystals and the possible significance of these deposits in the breast, we retrospectively studied 119 breast biopsies from 100 women. By polarized light microscopy, we identified 16 cases with calcium oxalate deposits from this group. The crystals were typically within benign cysts or terminal ductules exhibiting apocrine differentiation by conventional morphologic criteria or by immunoreactivity to monoclonal antibodies against gross cystic disease fluid protein of 1,500 MW (anti-GCDFP-15). The lesions harboring the crystals were papillary or cystic apocrine metaplasia in 14 cases and simple apocrine metaplasia in two cases. These lesions were associated with separate foci of lobular carcinoma in situ in three cases and with other proliferative lesions regarded as risk markers for invasive carcinoma in six other cases. Paradoxically, the crystals were rarely seen in association with infiltrating carcinomas. Our findings support the concept that calcium oxalate deposits are a secretory form of calcification. The association with lobular carcinoma in situ and the rarity of the crystals in invasive carcinomas are in accord with previous observations. We found polarized light microscopy indispensable for the demonstration of these deposits in hematoxylin-eosin-stained sections.

Abstract: We determine rapidity asymmetry in the production of charged pions, protons, and antiprotons for large transverse momentum (p{sub T}) for d+Au collisions at {radical}(s{sub NN})=200 GeV. The rapidity asymmetry is defined as the ratio of particle yields at backward rapidity (Au beam direction) to those at forward rapidity (d beam direction). Abstract: We present strange particle spectra and yields measured at midrapidity in $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV proton-proton ($p+p$) collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We find that the previously observed universal transverse mass (${m}_{T}\ensuremath{\equiv}\sqrt{{{p}_{T}}^{2}+{m}^{2}}$) scaling of hadron production in $p+p$ collisions seems to break down at higher ${m}_{T}$ and that there is a difference in the shape of the ${m}_{T}$ spectrum between baryons and mesons. We observe midrapidity antibaryon to baryon ratios near unity for \ensuremath{\Lambda} and \ensuremath{\Xi} baryons and no dependence of the ratio on transverse momentum, indicating that our data do not yet reach the quark-jet dominated region. We show the dependence of the mean transverse momentum $\ensuremath{\langle}{p}_{T}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ on measured charged particle multiplicity and on particle mass and infer that these trends are consistent with gluon-jet dominated particle production. The data are compared with previous measurements made at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and Intersecting Storage Rings and in Fermilab experiments and with leading-order and next-to-leading-order string fragmentation model predictions. We infer from these comparisons that the spectral shapes and particle yields from $p+p$ collisions at RHIC energies have large contributions from gluon jets rather than from quark jets.

Abstract: We present the scaling properties of Lambda, Xi, and Omega in midrapidity Au+Au collisions at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. The yield of multistrange baryons per participant nucleon increases from peripheral to central collisions more rapidly than that of Lambda, indicating an increase of the strange-quark density of the matter produced. The strange phase-space occupancy factor gamma_{s} approaches unity for the most central collisions. Abstract: The effects of Cry toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Berliner) (Bt) on the anthocorid Orius albidipennis Reuter were studied under laboratory conditions. Tritrophic experiments were performed, in which Orius nymphs were fed Helicoverpa armigera (Hu¨bner) larvae reared on a diet with Cry1Ac, Cry1Ab, or Cry2Ab toxins at different concentrations (0, 1, and 10 g/ml), when supplemented with Ephestia kuehniella Zeller eggs. In complementary experiments, the Bt Cry1Ac toxin was directly fed to Orius nymphs at a very high concentration (1 mg/ml). No effects on prey consumption, developmental time, nymph survival, fecundity, and egg hatching of O. albidipennis were found in either experiment. It can be concluded that the toxins tested do not seem to pose a risk for the anthocorid O. albidipennis, especially when it is exposed through the prey

Abstract: We report a measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A(LL) and the differential cross section for inclusive midrapidity jet production in polarized proton collisions at s=200 GeV. The cross section data cover transverse momenta 5 < p(T)< 50 GeV/c and agree with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD evaluations. The A(LL) data cover 5 < p(T)< 17 GeV/c and disfavor at 98% C.L. maximal positive gluon polarization in the polarized nucleon.

Abstract: We report on p-Lambda, p-(Lambda) over bar, (p) over bar-Lambda, and (p) over bar-(Lambda) over bar correlation functions constructed in central Au-Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The proton and lambda source size is inferred from the p-Lambda and (p) over bar-(Lambda) over bar correlation functions. It is found to be smaller than the pion source size also measured by the STAR experiment at smaller transverse masses, in agreement with a scenario of a strong universal collective flow. The p-(Lambda) over bar and (p) over bar-Lambda correlation functions, which are measured for the first time, exhibit a large anticorrelation. Annihilation channels and/or a negative real part of the spin-averaged scattering length must be included in the final-state interactions calculation to reproduce the measured correlation function.

Abstract: We present the first statistically meaningful results fromtwo-K0s interferometry in heavy-ion collisions. A model that takes theeffect of the strong interaction into account has been used to fit themeasured correlation function. The effects of single and coupled channelwere explored. At the mean transverse mass m_T = 1.07 GeV, we obtain thevalues R = 4.09 +- 0.46 (stat.) +- 0.31 (sys) fm and lambda = 0.92 +-0.23 (stat) +- 0.13 (sys), where R and lambda are the invariant radiusand chaoticity parameters respectively. The results are qualitativelyconsistent with m_T systematics established with pions in a scenariocharacterized by a strong collective flow.

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra of pi(+/-), p, and (p) over bar p up to 12 GeV/c at midrapidity in centrality selected Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV are presented. In central Au + Au collisions, both pi(+/-) and p((p) over bar) show significant suppression with respect to binary scaling at p(T) greater than or similar to 4 GeV/c. Protons and antiprotons are less suppressed than pi(+/-), in the range 1.5 less than or similar to p(T) less than or similar to 6 GeV/c. The pi(-)/pi(+) and (p) over bar /p ratios show at most a weak pT dependence and no significant centrality dependence. The p/pi ratios in central Au + Au collisions approach the values in p + p and d + Au collisions at p(T) greater than or similar to 5 GeV/c. The results at high p(T) indicate that the partonic sources of pi(+/-), p, and (p) over bar have similar energy loss when traversing the nuclear medium

Abstract: Measurements of the production of forward pi(0) mesons from p+p and d+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV are reported. The p+p yield generally agrees with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The d+Au yield per binary collision is suppressed as eta increases, decreasing to similar to 30% of the p+p yield at =4.00, well below shadowing expectations. Exploratory measurements of azimuthal correlations of the forward pi(0) with charged hadrons at eta approximate to 0 show a recoil peak in p+p that is suppressed in d+Au at low pion energy. These observations are qualitatively consistent with a saturation picture of the low-x gluon structure of heavy nuclei.

Abstract: We report the measurements of $\ensuremath{\Sigma}(1385)$ and $\ensuremath{\Lambda}(1520)$ production in $p+p$ and $\mathrm{Au}+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=200\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$ from the STAR Collaboration. The yields and the ${p}_{T}$ spectra are presented and discussed in terms of chemical and thermal freeze-out conditions and compared to model predictions. Thermal and microscopic models do not adequately describe the yields of all the resonances produced in central $\mathrm{Au}+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions. Our results indicate that there may be a time span between chemical and thermal freeze-out during which elastic hadronic interactions occur.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A(LL) and the differential cross section for inclusive midrapidity jet production in polarized proton collisions at square root of s = 200 GeV. The cross section data cover transverse momenta 5pT50 GeV/c and agree with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD evaluations. The A(LL) data cover 5pT17 GeV/c and disfavor at 98% C.L. maximal positive gluon polarization in the polarized nucleon.

Abstract: Measurements of two-particle correlations on angular difference variables η1 − η2 (pseudorapidity) and φ1 − φ2 (azimuth) are presented for all primary charged hadrons with transverse momentum 0.15 ≤ p_t ≤ 2 GeV/c and |η| ≤ 1.3 from Au-Au collisions at √s_(NN) = 130 GeV. Large-amplitude correlations are observed over a broad range in relative angles where distinct structures appear on the same-side and away-side (i.e., relative azimuth less than π/2 or greater than π/2). The principal correlation structures include that associated with elliptic flow plus a strong, same-side peak. It is hypothesized that the latter results from correlated hadrons associated with semi-hard parton scattering in the early stage of the heavy-ion collision which produces a jet-like correlation peak at small relative angles. The width of the jet-like peak on η1 − η2 increases by a factor 2.3 from peripheral to central collisions, suggesting strong coupling of semi-hard scattered partons to a longitudinally-expanding medium. The new methods of jet analysis introduced here provide access to scattered partons at low transverse momentum well below the kinematic range where perturbative quantum chromodynamics and standard fragmentation models are applicable.
