Long time series of rainfall at different levels of aggregation (daily or hourly in most cases) constitute the basic input for hydrological, hydraulic and climate studies. However, oftentimes the length, completeness, time resolution or spatial coverage of the available records falls short of the minimum requirements to build robust estimations. Here, we introduce NEOPRENE, a Python library to generate synthetic time series of rainfall. NEOPRENE simulates multi-site synthetic rainfall that reproduces observed statistics at different time aggregations. Three case studies exemplify the use of the library, focusing on extreme rainfall, as well as on disaggregating daily rainfall observations into hourly rainfall records. NEOPRENE is distributed from GitHub with an open license (GPLv3), free for research and commercial purposes alike. We also provide Jupyter notebooks with the example use cases to promote its adoption by researchers and practitioners involved in vulnerability, impact and adaptation studies.

Latinoamérica presenta una alta disponibilidad y un elevado volumen de recurso hídrico. Este hecho, combinado con una abrupta topografía, permite generar importantes aprovechamientos hidroeléctricos con estructuras relativamente reducidas, lo que ha hecho proliferar este tipo de explotaciones. De manera reciente, sin embargo, ha comenzado a manifestarse inquietud respecto a los efectos que el cambio climático pueda tener sobre las centrales hidroeléctricas, y cómo esto pueda afectar a la disponibilidad y distribución de energía eléctrica en los distintos países. En el presente trabajo presentamos la metodología y principales resultados obtenidos en el estudio Vulnerabilidad al cambio climático y medidas de adaptación de sistemas hidroeléctricos en países andinos que ha cubierto los sistemas hidroeléctricos de Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador y Perú. Focalizaremos nuestros esfuerzos en el análisis del recurso hídrico, paso previo al análisis de la evolución del recurso hidroeléctrico, a nivel regional, donde se han generado unas bases de datos homogéneas para toda el área de estudio mediante reconstrucción temporal y espacial, haciendo uso de técnicas de krigeado. También se ha procedido a homogeneizar la información sobre tipos de suelo y usos del suelo. La hidrología se ha resuelto con el modelo hidrológico semidistribuido VIC. Se ha analizado el periodo histórico 1980-2010, y se han generado proyecciones de cambio climático para el corto plazo (2011-2040), el medio plazo (2041-2070) y el largo plazo (2071-2100) para los escenarios RCP4.5 y RCP8.5 utilizados en el 5° informe del IPCC (Panel Intergubernamental para el Cambio Climático). Se ha tenido en cuenta además la posible evolución socioeconómica y su impacto sobre los usos del suelo.

Background: The use of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) for long-term therapy of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients without cancer has not been consistently evaluated. Methods: We used the data in the RIETE registry to compare the 3-month outcomes (VTE recurrences, major bleeding or death) in non-cancer patients with VTE, according to long-term therapy with LMWH or vitamin K antagonists (VKAs). Results: As of March 2018, 14,582 non-cancer patients with VTE had received initial therapy with LMWH and then switched to VKAs, while 9151 were prescribed LMWH for initial and long-term therapy. Overall, 11,494 had initially presented with pulmonary embolism (PE) and 12,239 with isolated deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Among 11,494 patients initially presenting with PE, 84 had VTE recurrences, 204 major bleeding and 406 died. Among 12,239 patients with isolated DVT, 133 developed VTE recurrences, 137 bled and 289 died. On propensity score analysis, PE patients on long-term LMWH therapy were at increased risk for PE recurrences (OR: 3.30; 95%CI: 1.67–6.48), major bleeding (OR: 1.68; 95%CI: 1.21–2.32) or death (OR: 3.16; 95%CI: 2.43–4.09) compared with those receiving VKAs. In patients with DVT, those on long-term LMWH also were at increased risk for PE recurrences (OR: 2.31; 95%CI: 1.13–4.73), major bleeding (OR 2.28; 95%CI: 1.51–3.44) or death (OR: 2.32; 95%CI: 1.54–3.51). Conclusions: In the RIETE non-cancer patients with VTE, long-term therapy with VKAs was associated with a lower risk for recurrences, major bleeding or death.

The Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has adopted the FAIR Guiding Principles. We present the Atlas chapter of Working Group I (WGI) as a test case. We describe the application of the FAIR principles in the Atlas, the challenges faced during its implementation, and those that remain for the future. We introduce the open source repository resulting from this process, including coding (e.g., annotated Jupyter notebooks), data provenance, and some aggregated datasets used in some figures in the Atlas chapter and its interactive companion (the Interactive Atlas), open to scrutiny by the scientific community and the general public. We describe the informal pilot review conducted on this repository to gather recommendations that led to significant improvements. Finally, a working example illustrates the re-use of the repository resources to produce customized regional information, extending the Interactive Atlas products and running the code interactively in a web browser using Jupyter notebooks., (© 2022.
