To study morphological evolution, it is necessary to combine information from multiple intersecting research fields. Here, we report on the structure of the bony and muscular elements of the craniomandibular complex of birds, highlighting its morphological architecture and complexity (or simplification) in the context of anatomical networks of the Band-winged Nightjar Systellura longirostris (Caprimulgiformes, Caprimulgidae). This species has skull osteology and jaw myology that departs from the general structural plan of the craniomandibular complex of Neornithes and is considered morphologically simple. Our goal is to test if its simplification is also reflected in its anatomical network, particularly in those parameters that measure complexity and to explore if the distribution of the networks in a phylomorphospace is conditioned by their evolutionary history or by convergence. Our results show that S. longirostris clusters with other Strisores and momotids and is segregated from the other bird species analyzed when plotted in the phylomorphospace, as a consequence of convergence in the network parameters. Systellura has a craniomandibular complex consisting of fewer muscles connecting more bones than the model species (e.g., the rock pigeon or the guira cuckoo). In this sense, Systellura is actually more complex regarding the number of integrative bony parts, while its craniomandibular complex is simpler. According to its anatomical network, Systellura also can be interpreted as less complex, particularly compared with other Strisores and taxa that reflect the general structure of the craniomandibular complex in Neornithes.

Here we present the first record of a stem-Coracii outside the Holarctic region, found in the early Eocene of Patagonia at the Laguna del Hunco locality. Ueekenkcoracias tambussiae gen. et sp. nov. consists of an incomplete right hind limb that presents the following combination of characters, characteristic of Coracii: relatively short and stout tibiotarsus, poorly developed crista cnemialis cranialis, short and wide tarsometatarsus, with the tuberositas m. tibialis cranialis located medially on the shaft, and curved and stout ungual phalanges. Although the presence of a rounded and conspicuous foramen vasculare distale and the trochlea metatarsi II strongly deflected medially resemble Primobucconidae, a fossil group only found in the Eocene of Europe and North America, our phylogenetic analysis indicates the new taxon is the basalmost known Coracii. The unexpected presence of a stem-Coracii in the Eocene of South America indicates that this clade had a more widespread distribution than previously hypothesized, already extending into the Southern Hemisphere by the early Eocene. Ueekenkcoracias tambussiae represents new evidence of the increasing diversity of stem lineages of birds in the Eocene. The new material provides novel morphological data for understanding the evolutionary origin and radiation of rollers and important data for estimates of the divergence time of the group.

Jaw muscles are key features of the vertebrate feeding apparatus. The jaw musculature is housed in the skull whose morphology reflects a compromise between multiple functions, including feeding, housing sensory structures, and defense, and the skull constrains jaw muscle geometry. Thus, jaw muscle anatomy may be suboptimally oriented for the production of bite force. Crocodylians are a group of vertebrates that generate the highest bite forces ever measured with a flat skull suited to their aquatic ambush predatory style. However, basal members of the crocodylian line (e.g., Prestosuchus) were terrestrial predators with plesiomorphically tall skulls, and thus the origin of modern crocodylians involved a substantial reorganization of the feeding apparatus and its jaw muscles. Here, we reconstruct jaw muscles across a phylogenetic range of crocodylians and fossil suchians to investigate the impact of skull flattening on muscle anatomy. We used imaging data to create 3D models of extant and fossil suchians that demonstrate the evolution of the crocodylian skull, using osteological correlates to reconstruct muscle attachment sites. We found that jaw muscle anatomy in early fossil suchians reflected the ancestral archosaur condition but experienced progressive shifts in the lineage leading to Metasuchia. In early fossil suchians, musculus adductor mandibulae posterior and musculus pterygoideus (mPT) were of comparable size, but by Metasuchia, the jaw musculature is dominated by mPT. As predicted, we found that taxa with flatter skulls have less efficient muscle orientations for the production of high bite force. This study highlights the diversity and evolution of jaw muscles in one of the great transformations in vertebrate evolution.

We used three-dimensional digital models to investigate the brain and endosseous labyrinth morphology of selected Neotropical Piciformes (Picidae, Ramphastidae, Galbulidae and Bucconidae). Remarkably, the brain morphology of Galbulidae clearly separates from species of other families. The eminentiae sagittales of Galbulidae and Bucconidae (insectivorous with high aerial maneuverability abilities) are smaller than those of the toucans (scansorial frugivores). Galbula showed the proportionally largest cerebellum, and Ramphastidae showed the least foliated one. Optic lobes ratio relative to the telencephalic hemispheres showed a strong phylogenetic signal. Three hypotheses were tested: (a) insectivorous taxa that need precise and fast movements to catch their prey, have well developed eminentiae sagittales compared to fruit eaters, (b) species that require high beak control would show larger cerebellum compared to other brain regions and higher number of visible folia and (c) there are marked differences between the brain shape of the four families studied here that bring valuable information of this interesting bird group. Hypotheses H1 and H2 are rejected, meanwhile H3 is accepted.

We describe new avian remains from the lower levels of the Toro Negro Formation (~7-6 Ma, U–Pb), exposed in Quebrada de la Troya between Vinchina and Jagüé towns in La Rioja Province, Argentina. The Toro Negro Formation is composed of a thick continental sequence (~2.4 km) of sandstones, conglomerates and mudstones deposited in both fluvial and lacustrine systems at the base of the unit. The avifauna of Toro Negro is low in diversity, and the majority of the remains are fragmentary and isolated. However, it is interesting in that it includes carnivorous birds such as a new species of a large eagle (Vinchinavis paka gen. et sp. nov.), scavengers (condors) and large herbivores (rheas). On the whole, the occurrences documented within the Toro Negro Formation confirm the presence of taxa with strong temperate warm preferences that typically inhabits open areas with arboreal patches within an arid-semiarid zone. The palaeoenvironmental characteristics of the fauna are confirmed as fully compatible with the evidence previously obtained through sedimentology and facies analysis. Among the meson decays, K → π ν ν ‾ are the cleanest environment, from the theoretical point of view, where to search for new physics effects. The NA62 Experiment at CERN SPS aims to measure the BR ( K + → π + ν ν ‾ ) with a 10% precision by the end of 2018. It has been commissioned with technical runs in 2014 and 2015, and some preliminary results of the detector performances and quality of data are here reported.

Phorusrhacidae, popularly known as ‘terror birds’, are the most speciose clade within the avian order Cariamiformes, with a fossil record that ranges from the Eocene to the Pleistocene. Although several species have preserved skulls, our understanding of their cranial morphology remains incomplete. Here, a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge of phorusrhacid skull anatomy is presented. The phorusrhacid skull bauplan includes salient features such as deep, triangular fossae temporales, a complex basipterygoid articulation and the loss of bending zones related to kinesis. Two skull morphotypes can be discriminated: the psilopterine and the ‘terror bird’ type. The ‘terror bird’ skull type is here considered an evolutionary specialization, indicating that among phorusrhacids, medium-size to large phorusrhacids show more rigid and stiffer skulls. Nevertheless, studies have shown that the two morphotypes may have handled prey in a similar manner, suggesting that a trophic specialization with a unique hunting technique was the key driver of the evolution of the phorusrhacid skull.

The Gigatracker is the NA62 beam tracker. It is made of three 63 . 1 m m × 29 . 3 m m stations of 300 μ m × 300 μ m hybrid silicon pixel detectors installed in vacuum ( ∼ 1 0 − 6 m b a r ). The beam particles, flowing at 750 M H z , are traced in 4-dimensions by mean of time-stamping pixels with a design resolution of 200 p s . This performance has to be maintained despite the beam irradiation amounting to a yearly fluence of 2 × 1 0 14 1 MeV n eq ∕ cm 2 . The detector material minimization is paramount, as the detector faces the full beam. The station material budget is reduced to 0 . 5 % X 0 by using (HEP world first) micro-channels cooling. We will describe the detector design and performances during the NA62 runs.

Here we address the morphology of the cranial musculoskeletal in the South American Band-winged nightjar (Systellura longirostris, Caprimulgiformes, Aves) with the focus upon in how the mouth closure and opening mechanism is. Bony characters such as the thinness of the interorbital septum and the reduction of the postorbital process co-assist the location of large eyes, although correlations between eye size brain mass and body mass revealed that the Band-winged nightjar´s eye is bigger than expected. The reduction of the processus orbitalis of the os quadratum would allow the great mouth opening given by a large maxillary protraction. Systellura longirostris shows a zona flexoria intramandibularis with marked reduction in bone ossification that helps to the lateral opening of the jaws. In Systellura longirostris, the m. pseudotemporalis profundus, m. adductor mandibulae externus superficialis, and m. adductor mandibulae externus medialis are absent. The adductor muscles represent 66.614% of the total mandibular muscle mass. Physiological Cross Sectional Area (PCSA) values of the adductor muscles are high and the fibers are relatively long compared to other zoophagous birds, another condition that favors adduction. The m. adductor mandibulae externus profundus is the largest jaw muscle regarding its mass but its osteological correlate on the neurocranium, the fossa temporalis, is absent. International audience; The GigaTracKer (GTK) is the beam spectrometer of the CERN NA62 experiment. The detector features challenging design specifications, in particular a peak particle flux reaching up to 2.0 MHz/mm$^2$, a single hit time resolution smaller than 200 ps and, a material budget of 0.5% X$_0$ per tracking plane. To fulfill these specifications, novel technologies were especially employed in the domain of silicon hybrid time-stamping pixel technology and micro-channel cooling. This article describes the detector design and reports on the achieved performance.

The cranio‐mandibular complex is an important structure involved in food capture and processing. Its morphology is related to the nature of the food item. Jaw muscles enable the motion of this complex and their study is essential for functional and evolutionary analysis. The present study compares available behavioral and dietary data obtained from the literature with novel results from functional morphological analyses of the cranio‐mandibular complex of the Guira cuckoo (Guira guira) to understand its relationship with the zoophagous trophic habit of this species. The bite force was estimated based on muscle dissections, measurements of the physiological cross‐sectional area, and biomechanical modeling of the skull. The results were compared with the available functional morphological data for other birds. The standardized bite force of G. guira is higher than predicted for exclusively zoophagous birds, but lower than for granivorous and/or omnivorous birds. Guira guira possesses the generalized jaw muscular system of neognathous birds, but some features can be related to its trophic habit. The external adductor muscles act mainly during food item processing and multiple aspects of this muscle group are interpreted to increase bite force, that is, their high values of muscle mass, their mechanical advantage (MA), and their perpendicular orientation when the beak is closed. The m. depressor mandibulae and the m. pterygoideus dorsalis et ventralis are interpreted to prioritize speed of action (low MA values), being most important during prey capture. The supposed ecological significance of these traits is the potential to widen the range of prey size that can be processed and the possibility of rapidly capturing agile prey through changes in the leverage of the muscles involved in opening and closing of the bill. The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is a fixed target experiment designed to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare Kaon decay K + → π + ν ν . The experiment uses an high-momentum K + decay in-flight technique to increase the rejection power of the main background: K + → π + π 0 . The Gigatracker is a hybrid silicon pixel detector, exposed to a 750 MHz high-energy charged hadron beam, built to give an accurate measurement of K + momentum and direction together with an high precision measurement of the beam particle arrival time (115 ps RMS resolution per plane). It comprises three stations placed right before the K + decay region and inserted around two achromats. The detector works in vacuum ( ∼ 1 0 − 6 mbar ) at about − 10 ° C . Each station is made of a 200 μ m thick silicon sensor readout by 10 TDCPix, custom 100 μ m thick ASICs, and cooled by an innovative double circuit silicon micro-channel cooling system. All these parts are designed to minimize the total material budget which, in the final detector, amounts to less than 1.5% X 0 for the three stations. In order to sustain the high rate of incoming particles, each TDCPix, operating in a self triggered mode, is equipped with four 3.2 Gb/s serializers sending data to the detector DAQ system based on a read-out card per TDCPix chip sending trigger-matched hits to 6 PC servers. I will describe the whole detector and present some of the results from data collected during the 2016 NA62 runs.

Silicon micro-channel cooling is being studied for efficient thermal management in application fields such as high power computing and 3D electronic integration. This concept has been introduced in 2010 for the thermal management of silicon pixel detectors in high energy physics experiments.Combining the versatility of standard micro-fabrication processes with the high thermal efficiency typical of micro-fluidics, it is possible to produce effective thermal management devices that are well adapted to different detector configurations. The production of very thin cooling devices in silicon enables a minimization of material of the tracking sensors and eliminates mechanical stresses due to the mismatch of the coefficient of thermal expansion between detectors and cooling systems.The NA62 experiment at CERN will be the first high particle physics experiment that will install a micro-cooling system to perform the thermal management of the three detection planes of its Gigatracker pixel detector.

Psittaciform birds exhibit novelties in jaw bone structure and musculature that are associated with strong bite forces. These features include an ossified arcus suborbitalis and the muscles ethmomandibularis and pseudomasseter. We analyse the jaw musculature of the monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) to enable future studies aimed at understanding craniofacial development, morphology, function and evolution. We estimate bite force based on muscle dissections, physiological cross-sectional area and skull biomechanical modelling. We also compare our results with available data for other birds and traced the evolutionary origin of the three novel diagnostic traits. Our results indicate that, in Myiopsitta, (i) the arcus suborbitalis is absent and the orbit is ventrally closed by an elongate processus orbitalis and a short ligamentum suborbitale; (ii) the ethmomandibularis muscle is a conspicuous muscle with two bellies, with its origin on the anterior portion of the septum interorbitale and insertion on the medial aspect of the mandible; (iii) the pseudomasseter muscle consists of some fibers arising from the m. adductor mandibulae externus superficialis, covering the lateral surface of the arcus jugalis and attaches by an aponeurotic sheet on the processus orbitalis; (iv) a well-developed adductor mandibulae complex is present; (v) the bite force estimation relative to body mass is higher than that calculated for other non-psittaciform species; and (vi) character evolution analysis revealed that the absence of the arcus suborbitalis and the presence of the m. pseudomassseter are the ancestral conditions, and mapping is inconclusive about presence of one or two bellies of the m. ethmomandibularis., Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo

The GigaTracker is a hybrid silicon pixel detector built for the NA62 experiment aiming at measuring the branching fraction of the ultra-rare kaon decay K+→π+νν¯ at the CERN SPS. The detector has to track particles in a beam with a flux reaching 1.3 MHz/mm2 and provide single-hit timing with 200 ps RMS resolution for a total material budget of less than 0.5% X0 per station. The tracker comprises three 60.8 mm×27 mm stations installed in vacuum (∼10$^{−6}$mbar) and cooled with liquid C6F14 circulating through micro-channels etched inside a few hundred micron thick silicon plates. Each station is composed of a 200 μm thick silicon sensor read out by 2×5 custom 100 μm thick ASICs, called TDCPix. Each chip contains 40×45 asynchronous pixels, 300 μm×300 μm each and is instrumented with 100 ps bin time-to-digital converters. In order to cope with the high rate, the TDCPix is equipped with four 3.2 Gb/s serialisers sending out the data. We will describe the detector and the results from the 2014 and 2015 NA62 runs.

A Micromegas [1] detector with four active layers, serving as prototype for the upgrade of the ATLAS muon spectrometer [2] , was designed and constructed in 2014 at CERN and represents the first example of a Micromegas quadruplet ever built. The detector has been realized using the resistive-strip technology and decoupling the amplification mesh from the readout structure. The four readout layers host overall 4096 strips with a pitch of 415 μ m ; two layers have strips running parallel (η in the ATLAS reference system, for measuring the muon bending coordinate) and two layers have inclined strips by ±1.5° angle with respect to the η coordinate in order to provide measurement of the second coordinate. A detector characterization carried out with cosmic muons and under X-ray irradiation is presented with the obtained results.

In view of the use of Micromegas detectors for the upgrade of the ATLAS muon system, two detector quadruplets with an area of 0.3 m2 per plane serving as prototypes for future ATLAS chambers have been constructed. They are based on the resistive-strip technology and thus spark tolerant. The detectors were built in a modular way. The quadruplets consist of two double-sided readout panels and three support (or drift) panels equipped with the micromesh and the drift electrode. The panels are bolted together such that the detector can be opened and cleaned, if required. Two of the readout planes are equipped with readout strips inclined by 1.5 degree. In this talk, we present the results of detailed performance studies based on X-Ray and cosmic ray measurements as well as measurements with 855 MeV electrons at the MAMI accelerator. In particular, results on reconstruction efficiencies, track resolution and gain homogeneity is presented.

Each TDCPix contains 40$\times$45 asynchronous pixels, and is instrumented with 360 pairs of time-to-digital converter channels with 100 ps bin. The three stations are installed in vacuum (about 10$^{-6}$ mbar) and cooled with liquid $\mathrm{C_6F_{14}}$ circulating through micro-channels etched inside silicon plates a few hundred microns thick. The total material budget is less than 0.5% $X_0$ per station. Detector description, operational experience and performance from the NA62 experimental run in 2016, at about 30% the nominal beam intensity, will be presented.

The extinct dromornithids, gastornithids and phorusrhacids are among the most spectacular birds to have ever lived, with some giants exceeding 500 kg. The affinities and evolution of these and other related extinct birds remain contentious, with previous phylogenetic analyses being affected by widespread convergence and limited taxon sampling. We address these problems using both parsimony and tip-dated Bayesian approaches on an expansive taxon set that includes all key extinct flightless and flighted (e.g. Vegavis and lithornithids) forms, an extensive array of extant fowl (Galloanseres), representative Neoaves and palaeognaths. The Paleogene volant Lithornithidae are recovered as stem palaeognaths in the Bayesian analyses. The Galloanseres comprise four clades inferred to have diverged in the Late Cretaceous on Gondwana. In addition to Anseriformes and Galliformes, we recognize a robust new clade (Gastornithiformes) for the giant flightless Dromornithidae (Australia) and Gastornithidae (Eurasia, North America). This clade exhibits parallels to ratite palaeognaths in that flight presumably was lost and giant size attained multiple times. A fourth clade is represented by the Cretaceous Vegavis (Antarctica), which was strongly excluded from Anseriformes; thus, a crucial molecular calibration point needs to be reconsidered. The presbyornithids Wilaru (Australia) and Presbyornis (Northern Hemisphere) are robustly found to be the sister group to Anatoidea (Anseranatidae + Anatidae), a relatively more basal position than hitherto recognized. South America's largest bird, Brontornis, is not a galloansere, but a member of Neoaves related to Cariamiformes; therefore, giant Galloanseres remain unknown from this continent. Trait analyses showed that while gigantism and flightlessness evolved repeatedly in groups, diet is constrained by phylogeny: all giant Galloanseres and palaeognaths are herbivores or mainly herbivorous, and giant neoavians are zoophagous or omnivorous.

The microanatomical and histological structure of Eocene Antarctic stem penguin tarsometatarsi is examined in order to characterise the bone microstructure. Eight adult tarsometatarsi belonging to eight fossil species (Palaeeudyptes gunnari, Palaeeudyptes klekowskii, Anthropornis grandis, Anthropornis nordenskjoeldi, Archaeospheniscus wimani, Marambiornis exilis, Delphinornis arctowskii and Delphinornis larseni) collected from the Antarctic A. nordenskjoeldi Biozone (La Meseta Formation, ,34.2 Ma) were examined. The thin sections revealed a distinctive microanatomical variation among taxa. Whereas Anthropornis spp., A. wimani and P. gunnari possess massive, clearly osteosclerotic bones (medullary cavities absent or strongly reduced), the bones of Delphinornis spp., P. klekowski and M. exilis exhibit well-developed medullary cavities. The cortical bone in all the specimens consists of primary, well-vascularised fibro-lamellar bone and variable amounts of secondary bone. Medullary cavities are coated by a thick layer of lamellar bone tissue and coarse compacted cancellous bone. Although several causes can explain the striking microanatomical variation (e.g. ontogeny), we interpret that such variation is related to differential adaptations to the aquatic life, for which taxa with more massive bones were possibly adapted to deeper and more prolonged diving excursions. The $K^+\rightarrow \pi^+ \nu \bar \nu$ decay is one of the theoretically cleanest meson decay where to look for indirect effects of new physics complementary to LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN is designed to measure the branching ratio (BR) of this decay with 10\% precision. NA62 has been successfully launched in October 2014, took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 reaching the final designed beam intensity. The NA62 experimental setup is illustrated and quality of data acquired in view of the final measurement is reported. Psilopterus lemoinei, the largest species in this genus, was a small terror bird weighing 8–9 kg, and was a ground bird with functionally tridactyl feet. New remains of this phorusrhacid, including an exceptionally preserved anterior part of a skull recovered from the Patagonian Killik Aike Norte locality (Santa Cruz Formation, late early Miocene), is now available for study. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed morphological description of Psilopterus lemoinei. The new fossils show for the first time that the internal structure of the beak is hollow and reinforced with thin-walled trabeculae. The absence of zona flexoria palatina and zona flexoria arcus jugalis are key features related to the evolution of cranial akinesis. Homologies of the narial and fenestra antorbitalis boundaries have been clarified. Our re-examination allows the establishment of primary osteological homologies useful in comparative anatomy, functional morphology, and phylogenetic studies.

We examined the external anatomy of the endocast of the Greater Rhea (Rhea americana, Palaeognathae), during 3 main stages of its postnatal life, and compared it with information available on other palaeognathous birds. Series of scans with spiral computed tomographies were obtained from 3 skulls of different ages (chick, juvenile and adult) of R. americana; digital 3-dimensional reconstruction was performed and brain volumes were calculated from the models obtained. Qualitative assessment of the brain anatomy of R. americana indicates a conical and ventrally located bulbus olfactorius, laterally expanded hemispherium telencephali, well-developed eminentia sagittalis, and conspicuous cerebellum and tectum mesencephali. Anatomy of the chick brain was markedly different: less lateral expansion of the hemispherium telencephali, and lesser development of the eminentia sagittalis and auricula cerebelli. Little change between chicks and adults was observed in some brain regions such as the tectum mesencephali, while the eminentia sagittalis showed great increase in size. The large size of the eminentia sagittalis coupled with its increasing development during ontogeny could reflect its importance for visual processing functions and the way these improve during growth. Finally, the brain of R. americana is similar to that of Struthio and Dromaius, but differs from that of the Tinamidae and of Apteryx, allowing recognition of 3 distinct brain morphologies among the Palaeognathae.

The NA62 low mass spectrometer consists of 7000 straw tubes operating in vacuum. The front-end electronics is directly mounted on the detector and connected by a flexible PCB. The front-end board provides the amplification, shaping, discrimination and time measurements of the analogue signals from 16 channels. After digitisation the data is sent to a VME 9U read-out board. The data, once matched with the trigger, is sent to the next step and used by the trigger level 1 algorithm. The front-end and read-out systems of the detector will be presented along with the first results of the detector performances.

The rare decay K + ! p + n n is an excellent process to probe Standard Model and indirectly search for new physics, complementary to the ongoing direct LHC searches. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS aims to collect about 100 of such events in two years of data taking, keeping the background at the level of 10%. La visualización y análisis de los fósiles asistido por computadoras ha revolucionado el estudio de los organismos extintos. Técnicas novedosas permiten caracterizar los restos en tres dimensiones y acceder a detalles sin precedentes. Esto ha permitido a los paleontólogos ganar importantes conocimientos sobre la anatomía, el desarrollo, la función y hasta la conservación. Las reconstrucciones digitales se pueden utilizar en análisis funcionales y en la puesta a prueba rigurosa de hipótesis sobre la paleobiología de los organismos extintos. Estos enfoques están transformando nuestra comprensión de la vida en el pasado y también de los organismos vivientes en general. El empleo de técnicas no invasivas permite la captura de grandes cantidades de datos útiles sin dañar los especímenes que se están estudiando. Debido a que los datos digitales se pueden compartir de forma instantánea y global, equipos de científicos pueden trabajar en para­lelo, acelerando el ritmo de las investigaciones. En este trabajo se ejemplifican casos en los cuales a partir de modelos virtuales se pueden abordar problemas morfológicos en aves. Visualization and analysis of fossils assisted by computers have revolutionized the study of extinct organisms. Innovative techniques allow to characterize the remains in three dimensions with unprecedented detail, allowing paleontologists to gain important knowledge about anatomy, development, function and even conservation. Digital reconstructions can be used in functional analysis and rigorous testing of hypotheses on the paleobiology of extinct organisms. These approaches are transforming our understanding about life in the past and also of living organisms in general. The use of non-invasive techniques enables capturing large amounts of data without damaging the specimens under study. As digital data can be shared instantly and globally, teams of scientists can work in parallel, accelerating research time. In this paper, cases in which virtual models were used to assess morphological problems are shown.

The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is aimed at measuring the branching fraction of the ultrarare decay K+ → π+v with ~10% precision by collecting ~1013 kaon decays in two years of data taking. This amount of data will allow to carry out a wide program of searching for rare and forbidden (within the Standard Model) K+ and π0 decays, including sterile neutrinos, lepton flavor violating modes, exotic particles (e.g. "dark photons"). The expected performances of the NA62 setup will allow to improve existing limits for several decay modes.

Several advances have been made on the understanding of the biotic and environmental history of South America and Antarctica including the discovery of additional fossil sites coupled with progress from multidisciplinary analyses encompassing tectonic, isotopic, and radiochemical dating and molecular studies in modern forms. This also changed the knowledge about birds. Characters of the South American (SAn) avian fossil record are: (1) presence of taxa with uncertain affinities and the absence of Passeriformes during the Paleogene; (2) progressive and accelerated increase of species starting at the Neogene (Miocene); (3) dispersal of important extinct lineages (e.g. Phorusrhacidae, Teratornithidae) to North America after the connection between both Americas; (4) scarce endemic species that are members of clades with major diversification during the Neogene (e.g., Cariamiformes) or that inhabits mainly in the southern hemisphere (e.g., Anhingidae); (5) highly diverse living groups with limited (e.g., Passeriformes) or none (e.g., Apodiformes) fossil record whose stem-groups are registered in Europe; (6) Absence of the most extant SAn bird lineages; (7) predominate of the zoophagous birds (>60 %) in all the associations (13) under scrutiny. Changes in diversity of the SAn birds during the Cenozoic could have been the result of the action of different processes (dispersal, vicariance, extirpations or extinctions) that affect groups in different ways.

The continental vertebrate collection of the Santa Cruz Formation (Late-early Miocene) is known worldwide by its abundance and diversity. With regard to the bird fossil record, the taxonomical and morphological diversity is also really high. The initial collection was largely made by Carlos Ameghino by the end of the nineteenth century and the remains were studied and nominated by his brother, Florentino Ameghino.
