Abstract

A single-crystal radical cation salt was obtained by anodic oxidation of trans-1,2-bis-(2-naphthyl)ethene (1,2-DNE) with SbF−6 as the counter-ion. The crystal structure of (1,2-DNE)SbF6 was solved and found to be similar to the radical cation salts of unsubstituted naphthalene. The crystal structure is disordered, i.e. two orientations of the 1,2-DNE molecules are statistically occupied. The molecular overlap, resulting from these two orientations, models the structure of the salt of poly(2,6-naphthylenevinylene). In contrast to most other radical cation salts which are one-dimensional conductors, a conduction mechanism of higher dimensionality is predicted on the basis of the crystal structure of (1,2-DNE)SbF6. The identical type of disorder is also present in the crystal structure of trans-1,2-bis(1-naphthyl)ethene.

Abstract

Processing polymers near room temperature to produce all-polymeric nonlinear optical films has important advantages [1]. For example, the Langmuir-Blodgett-Kuhn (LBK) technique offers control over final film thickness to within one monolayer. Also, materials may be precisely located within the film to control properties for purposes such as phase matching of the fundamental and second harmonic waveguide modes [2].

14. High Glass Transition Temperature Syndioregic Second Order Nonlinear Optical Polymers in Langmuir-Blodgett-Kuhn Films

Abstract

Recent progress has been made toward the goal of processing polymers at low temperature to produce all-polymeric nonlinear optical films which may ultimately find application as active waveguides. Our previously reported work [1] has utilized the Langmuir-Blodgett-Kuhn (LBK) technique to produce such films but the noncentrosymmetric order in those films was lost when heated above 80 °C. New polymers were designed to yield ordered films with higher thermal stability by eliminating the long alkyl side chains (Figure 1). The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the bulk polymer is about 240 °C, and the upper limit on short term thermal baking stability is about 320 °C [2].

16. High-Temperature Sierrulate Nonlinear Optical Polymers

Abstract

Second-order nonlinear optical polymers (NLOPs) are excellent thin film active optical waveguiding materials.1 Integration of NLOP films on silicon to form low cost photonic devices, using current manufacturing lines, requires optical stability to at least 250°C for several minutes, and more preferably to 350°C. One approach has been to dissolve stable chromophores in high temperature polyimides.2 However, the addition of chromophores (20 to 30 percent) considerably lowers the glass transition temperature, and diffusion of the fugitive chromophores will cause long term stability problems. A second approach has been to crosslink a chromophore-polymer matrix.3 This approach can lead to unacceptably large optical losses due to scattering from density fluctuations trapped in the matrix during the crosslinking process. A third approach is the synthesis of amorphous mainchain thermoplastic NLOPs that have a high glass transition temperature (Tg) and a high chromophore concentration.4

Abstract

Preliminary, systematic measurements of the drawing process of sulfonium salt precursor polymer films were obtained using an Instron tensile tester equipped with an environmental chamber, both of which were interfaced with a computer to measure variables such as stress, temperature, and strain. Under the conditions in which highly oriented samples were obtained, at high strain rates and with high heating rates, orientation appeared to be dependent upon the rate of strain but not upon the total strain. Measurements of the storage and loss moduli at similar heating rates revealed that the loss modulus and the ratio of loss modulus to the storage modulus increased with increasing temperature. These results suggest that the solid sulfonium salt precursor polymer of poly(p-phenylenevinylene), PPV, undergoes a phase transition to form an intermediate, liquid-like state during the thermal elimination reaction. Experiments were also performed at a lower strain and heating rate, in which the orientation did depend upon the total strain. However, these polymer films were not as well oriented as were the films drawn at the higher strain and heating rates. Taken together, these results suggest that the transition to a liquid-like phase may be necessary in obtaining highly oriented samples.

Abstract

Two new types of p-xylene bis-sulfonium chloride monomers were prepared from cycloalkylene sulfides. The polymerization characteristics of these monomers to form poly(p-xylene sulfonium chlorides), and the thermal elimination reactions of their polymers to poly(p-phenylene vinylene), were compared with those of two monomers prepared from dialkyl sulfides. The cycloalkylene sulfonium chloride monomer polymerized to higher yields and to higher molecular weight polymers, which showed more efficient elimination reactions.

Abstract

Model compounds for poly(1,4-naphthylenevinylene) (1) and poly(2,6-naphthylenevinylene) (2) were synthesized by the Wittig synthesis and studied by UV/VIS spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The values of 2,0 eV for the band gap edge and 0,7 V vs. the saturated calomel electrode for the oxidation potential, which were estimated by an extrapolation of the band gap edge and oxidation potential of model dimer and trimer of 1, are in excellent agreement with the literature values for the polymer. A value of 2,3 eV for the band gap edge of 2 was found by extrapolating the band gap edge of a model dimer and trimer, but the oxidation potential of polymer 2 could not be estimated, because the model trimer was not sufficiently soluble in solvents used. The stoichiometries of the radical cation salts of the model compounds, which were prepared by electrocrystallization, were evaluated from elemental analysis. A single crystal, radical cation salt was obtained for the model dimer of polymer 2.

Abstract

Nonlinear optical investigations on conjugated polymeric systems have shown strong nonlinear effects and fast response times (1). For application of these phenomena it is necessary to fabricate thin films with high uniformity of thickness, low optical scattering, photostability and low absorption in the near IR. Recently the conjugated polymer poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) was described (2–7). Third harmonic generation (THG) measurements at 1.85 µm (8) and femtosecond degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) experiments at 580 and 602 nm (9) on PPV thin films demonstrated high optical nonlinearity and subpicosecond response time. Therefore PPV is an interesting system for further nonlinear optical investigations at other wavelength regions.
