Femtosecond laser pulses are used to excite and probe high-order longitudinal thickness resonances at a frequency of ∼270 GHz in suspended Si membranes with thickness ranging from 0.4 to 15 μm. The measured acoustic lifetime scales linearly with the membrane thickness and is shown to be controlled by the surface specularity which correlates with roughness characterized by atomic force microscopy. Observed Q -factor values up to 2400 at room temperature result from the existence of a local maximum of the material Q in the sub-THz range. However, surface specularity would need to be improved over measured values of ∼0.5 in order to achieve high Q values in nanoscale devices. The results support the validity of the diffuse boundary scattering model in analyzing thermal transport in thin Si membranes.

The urgent need for non-toxic and abundant thermoelectric materials has become a significant motivation to improve the figures of merit of metal oxides in order to remove the barrier towards their widespread use for thermoelectric applications. Here we show the influence of a Cr layer in boosting the thermoelectric properties of vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) thin films, deposited by thermal evaporation and annealed at 500 °C. The Cr to V2O5 thickness ratio controls the morphological and thermoelectric properties of the thin films produced. The optimized Seebeck coefficient and power factor values at room temperature are +50 μV K−1 and 7.9 × 10−4 W m−1 K−2, respectively. The nanograin structure of the films is responsible for an improvement in the electrical conductivity up to 3 × 105 (Ω m)−1 with a typical thermal conductivity of 1.5 W m−1 K−1. We introduce a formal definition of a non local functional and show that the non local exchange-correlation potential functional, derived within Density-Functional Theory, is non local in the space of electronic densities. A previously developed non local exchange-correlation potential term, is introduced to approach the exact density-functional potential. With this approach, the electronic structure of the graphene surface and the tyrosine amino acid are calculated.

This chapter reviews phonon research in ultrathin free-standing silicon membranes made of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers. The membranes are stress-free and some are intentionally stressed. Their fabrication is described in both cases. Calculations and experimental work on confined acoustic phonons, dispersion relations, phonon lifetimes, and transport mechanisms in different phonon propagation regimes are gathered to provide a comprehensive view of the underlying physics.

et al., Studying thermal transport at the nanoscale poses formidable experimental challenges due both to the physics of the measurement process and to the issues of accuracy and reproducibility. The laser-induced transient thermal grating (TTG) technique permits non-contact measurements on nanostructured samples without a need for metal heaters or any other extraneous structures, offering the advantage of inherently high absolute accuracy. We present a review of recent studies of thermal transport in nanoscale silicon membranes using the TTG technique. An overview of the methodology, including an analysis of measurements errors, is followed by a discussion of new findings obtained from measurements on both >solid> and nanopatterned membranes. The most important results have been a direct observation of non-diffusive phonon-mediated transport at room temperature and measurements of thickness-dependent thermal conductivity of suspended membranes across a wide thickness range, showing good agreement with first-principles-based theory assuming diffuse scattering at the boundaries. Measurements on a membrane with a periodic pattern of nanosized holes (135nm) indicated fully diffusive transport and yielded thermal diffusivity values in agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. Under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License 3.0 (CC-BY)., Knowledge of the mean-free-path distribution of heat-carrying phonons is key to understanding phonon-mediated thermal transport. We demonstrate that thermal conductivity measurements of thin membranes spanning a wide thickness range can be used to characterize how bulk thermal conductivity is distributed over phonon mean free paths. A noncontact transient thermal grating technique was used to measure the thermal conductivity of suspended Si membranes ranging from 15–1500 nm in thickness. A decrease in the thermal conductivity from 74–13% of the bulk value is observed over this thickness range, which is attributed to diffuse phonon boundary scattering. The >textbook> phonon mean free path of heat carrying phonons in silicon at room temperature is ~40 nm. However, a large contribution to the thermal conductivity comes from low-frequency phonons with much longer mean free paths. We present a simple experiment demonstrating that room-temperature thermal transport in Si significantly deviates from the diffusion model already at micron distances. Absorption of crossed laser pulses in a freestanding silicon membrane sets up a sinusoidal temperature profile that is monitored via diffraction of a probe laser beam. By changing the period of the thermal grating we vary the heat transport distance within the range ~1-10 ¿m. et al., We report on fabrication and characterization of ultra-thin suspended single crystalline flat silicon membranes with thickness down to 6 nm. We have developed a method to control the strain in the membranes by adding a strain compensating frame on the silicon membrane perimeter to avoid buckling after the release. We show that by changing the properties of the frame the strain of the membrane can be tuned in controlled manner. We study the relaxation of coherent acoustic phonon modes with frequencies up to 500 GHz in ultrathin free-standing silicon membranes. Using an ultrafast pump-probe technique of asynchronous optical sampling, we observe that the decay time of the first-order dilatational mode decreases significantly from ~4.7 ns to 5 ps with decreasing membrane thickness from ~194 to 8 nm. The experimental results are compared with theories considering both intrinsic phonon-phonon interactions and extrinsic surface roughness scattering including a wavelength-dependent specularity. The effect of confinement on the acoustic phonon dispersion relation and heat capacity in free-standing silicon membranes is investigated, with thickness values down ∼ 8 nm. The discrete phonon branches are observed by angle-resolved inelastic light scattering spectroscopy. The fundamental flexural mode was observed to have a scattering intensity nearly two orders of magnitude larger than the fundamental dilatational mode, which is ascribed to its large out-of-plane density of states and quadratic dispersion. The quadratic dispersion also results in a reduction of the phase and group velocities of the fundamental flexural mode by more than one order of magnitude compared to bulk values. To investigate the effect of this behavior on the thermal conductivity, we perform calculations based on continuum elasticity theory to estimate corresponding changes in the heat capacity. This work provides a basis to investigate the effects of the frequency and dimension dependence of other phonon properties, in particular in the sub-20 nm regime, where phonon-phonon relaxation times, density of states and thermal conductivity are expected to possess different spectral dependencies than for bulk materials.Copyright © 2012 by ASME

We report the changes in dispersion relations of hypersonic acoustic phonons in free-standing silicon membranes as thin as \sim 8 nm. We observe a reduction of the phase and group velocities of the fundamental flexural mode by more than one order of magnitude compared to bulk values. We show how nanoimprint lithographic techniques are particularly suited for the realization of OLED device structures. We tested them to realize nanopatterned metallic electrodes containing photonic crystals to couple the light out and plasmonic crystals showing extraordinary transmission. At similar current densities, a two-fold electroluminescence is achieved with devices having double-sided structured metallic electrodes as compared to a control OLED with an ITO anode. ✓ Ten patients undergoing long-term renal dialysis for end-stage renal failure developed a destructive, noninfectious spondylarthropathy. All 10 patients had biopsy-proven dialysis-associated spondylarthropathy and subsequent spinal instability secondary to beta 2-microglobulin deposition in the vertebrae, intervertebral disc spaces, and support structures of the spine. Nine patients had cervical spinal instability and one had thoracolumbar spinal instability, with resultant neural compression. In at least one patient, the spinal instability was rapidly progressive. All had received renal dialysis for 34 months or longer (mean 109 months, range 34 to 154 months). Each patient required spinal stabilization (external in seven patients, internal in three). Nine of the 10 patients underwent neural decompression and spinal stabilization and fusion procedures. One patient's neurological condition was worse following surgery due to a postoperative cervical epidural hematoma; in the other nine patients, the presenting symptoms and signs improved. Three of these chronically ill patients did not survive their hospitalization, for a perioperative mortality rate of 30%. Death was due to cardiopulmonary arrest in two patients on Day 5 and 9 postoperatively and to sepsis in the third on Day 14. Of the seven early survivors, two additional patients died: one on Day 59 due to congestive heart failure and the other on Day 273 due to a cerebrovascular accident. Four of five patients who were followed for 8 months or longer (mean 14 months, range 8 to 20 months) had successful neural decompression and spinal stabilization procedures with evidence of stable bone fusion, indicating that these chronically ill, difficult-to-manage patients can be successfully treated. Clinicians who treat patients with renal disease and neurosurgeons who treat spinal disorders should be aware of dialysis-associated spondylarthropathy as a potential cause of degenerative vertebral column instability.

In this work artificial crystal structures designed to exhibit large and simultaneous photonic and phononic bandgaps, known as phoXonic crystals, are fabricated in silicon. Simulations have shown that honeycomb and square symmetry phoXonic crystals with high filling-fractions can produce large bandgaps in the photonic and phononic dispersion relations. To achieve this at hypersonic phononic frequencies and infrared (telecommunications) photonic frequencies, critical dimensions smaller than 100nm are typically required. In this paper, dose variation for Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) combined with Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) and Thermal Oxidation (TO) are shown to be effective methods to carefully control these parameters.

The length-scales at which thermal transport crosses from the diffusive to ballistic regime are of much interest particularly in the design and improvement of nano-structured materials. In this work, we demonstrate that the departure from diffusive transport has been observed in Si and GaAs using an optical transient thermal grating technique where an arbitrary, experimentally set length scale can be imposed on a material. In a transient thermal grating experiment, crossed laser pulses interfere creating a well-defined periodic absorption and temperature profile. A probe beam is diffracted from this transient grating and length-scale dependent thermal transport properties can be determined from the signal decay. As the length scale is decreased to lengths shorter than the mean free paths of heat carrying phonons, quasi-ballistic heat transport effects become apparent allowing us to map out length scales and mean free paths relevant to nondiffusive thermal transport in Si and GaAs.

Laser-based time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) and frequency-domain thermoreflectance (FDTR) techniques are widely used for investigating thermal transport at micro- and nano-scales. We demonstrate that data obtained in TDTR measurements can be represented in a frequency-domain form equivalent to FDTR, i.e., in the form of a surface temperature amplitude and phase response to time-harmonic heating. Such a representation is made possible by using a large TDTR delay time window covering the entire pulse repetition interval. We demonstrate the extraction of frequency-domain data up to 1 GHz from TDTR measurements on a sapphire sample coated with a thin layer of aluminum, and show that the frequency dependencies of both the amplitude and phase responses agree well with theory. The proposed method not only allows a direct comparison of TDTR and FDTR data, but also enables measurements at high frequencies currently not accessible to FDTR. The frequency-domain representation helps uncover aspects of the measurement physics which remain obscured in a traditional TDTR measurement, such as the importance of modeling the details of the heat transport in the metal transducer film for analyzing high frequency responses.

1. We investigated the effect of oestradiol on basolateral potassium channels in human colonic epithelium. 2. Ion transport was quantified using short circuit current (I:(sc)) measurements of samples mounted in Ussing chambers. Serosal K transport was studied using nystatin permeabilization of the apical membrane. Intracellular pH changes were quantified using spectroflouresence techniques. 3. Experiments were performed with either 10 nM or 1 microM Ca(2+) in the apical bathing solution. With 10 nM Ca(2+) in the apical bathing solution addition of oestradiol (1 nM) to the basolateral bath produced a rapid increase in current (delta I(K)=11.2+/-1.2 microA.cm(-2), n=6). This response was prevented by treatment of the serosal membrane with tolbutamide (1 microM). With 1 microM Ca(2+) in the apical bathing solution addition of oestradiol produced a rapid fall in current (delta I(K)=-12.8+/-1.4 microA.cm(-2)), this response was prevented by treatment of the basolateral membrane with tetra-pentyl-ammonium (TPeA). These responses were rapid and occurred independently of protein synthesis. 4. Inhibition of basolateral Na(+)/H(+) exchange with either amiloride or a low sodium bathing solution prevented this response. These responses were prevented by inhibition of protein kinase C (PKC) with bis-indolyl-maleimide. 5. Oestradiol (1 nM) produced a rapid intracellular alkanization (mean increase=0.11 pH units; n=6; P0.01). 6. These results suggest that oestradiol rapidly modulates serosal K transport in human colon. These effects depend upon intact Na(+)/H(+) exchange and protein kinase C. We propose a non-classical, possibly membrane linked, mechanism for oestradiol action in human colonic epithelium.

The specific heat of ultra-thin free-standing membranes is calculated using the elastic continuum model. We first obtain the dispersion relations of the discrete set of acoustic modes in the system. The specific heat is then calculated by summing over the discrete out-of-plane wavevector component and integrating over the continuous in-plane wavevector of these waves. In the low-temperature regime (T < 4 K), the flexural polarization is seen to have the highest contribution to the total specific heat. This leads to a linear dependence with temperature, resulting in a larger specific heat for the membrane compared to that of the bulk counterpart

Lipomas of the cerebellopontine angle are very rare lesions. To date, 18 patients have been reported, 17 of whom were adults. A second child is described with cerebellopontine angle lipoma.

In dogs, the mean plasma vitamin C concentration was found to be 0.88 mg/100 ml plasma while the mean buffy coat concentration of simultaneous blood aliquots was 42.98 mg/10(8) cells. A significant day-to-day variation was recorded for both parameters.
