The damage threshold and damage mechanisms of divertor armor materials, i.e. CFC and tungsten, were studied under the impact of ITER relevant ELM-like loads. These experiments were carried out in a Quasi-Stationary Plasma Accelerator applying repetitive pulses of 500 μs up to 100 cycles. CFC showed preferential erosion of the PAN fiber-bundles above 0.6 MJ/m 2 and cracking of pitch fiber-bundles. Tungsten showed cracking already at 0.2 MJ/m 2 and melting at flat surfaces above 1 MJ/m 2 . Cracks in tungsten were identified as primary and secondary cracks which all propagated in the vertical direction, which was considered to be less critical. At an energy density of 1.5 MJ/m 2 , the melt-layer completely covered the surface and bridged the castellation slots.

This paper is concerned with investigation of an erosion of the ITER-like divertor castellated targets of pure tungsten, lanthanum tungsten and CFC under plasma heat loads expected during the Type I ELMs and disruptions in ITER. These experiments were carried out on a plasma gun QSPA-T at the SRC RF TRINITI under EU/RF collaboration. The targets were exposed by series repeated plasma pulses with heat loads in the range of 0.2–2.5 MJ/m 2 and a pulse duration of 0.5 ms. The erosion value as a function of pulse number and energy density were obtained. The erosion of lanthanum tungsten started at the lower energy density as compared with pure tungsten and was mainly due to a melt layer movement and a droplets ejection. Characteristics of ejected droplets were measured. The erosion of CFC macrobrushes under ELM and disruption heat loads was determined mainly by damage of PAN-fibers.

Carbon fiber composites (CFCs) are the first choice as plasma facing materials for the strike points of divertor targets for future nuclear fusion devices like WENDELSTEIN 7-X and ITER. For the application in these facilities several potential European 3D-CFCs were compared and qualified: (1) four material batches of NB31 produced by Snecma Propulsion Solide (SNECMA); (2) NB41, SNECMA, the upgraded version of NB31; (3) N31, SNECMA, which is densified by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) instead of a final liquid pitch infiltration characteristic for NB31; (4) a new developmental 3D-CFC produced by DUNLOP. The characterization of the composites is comprised of thermo-physical measurements and tensile tests. The results are correlated to density and microstructure and summarized as follows: (1) NB41 provides the highest thermal conductivity in the ex-pitch direction of ∼375 W/(m K) at room temperature; (2) all material grades are, due to their heterogeneity, characterized by a relatively large scatter of mechanical properties; (3) the different densification process for N31 in comparison to NB31 has no influence on the material properties; (4) NB41 provides in all three directions a comparably high tensile strength with an average in the ex-pitch direction of ∼220 MPa; (5) the 3D-CFC from DUNLOP is comparable to NB41 but yet does not meet the specifications in the needling direction.

Since advanced carbon fiber composites for fusion applications, i.e., NB31, its upgraded version NB41 and DMS780, are anisotropic in terms of thermal and mechanical properties, their response under fusion-relevant transient heat loads is highly dependent on the orientation of the material. To understand and predict the material behavior, microstructural investigations as well as tensile tests and thermal conductivity measurements were performed in different directions (along and off the three orthotropic fiber-reinforcement axis). Furthermore, ITER-like disruption loads were applied, in the electron-beam facility JUDITH, on various carbon based materials and their thermal shock response, in terms of weight loss, was compared. Under repeated disruptions, the response of the studied materials is becoming worst if oriented differently than in the direction of highest thermal conductivity and it leads towards more homogeneous but deeper erosion zones with increased tilting angle.

An isotropic fine grain graphite (EK98) block has been exposed to the edge plasma in the TEXTOR tokamak and studied by Raman spectroscopy. Spectra from the net erosion area and deposition area where co-deposits (hard layer) were created by the tokamak discharges, are remarkably different. The spectra at the net erosion areas consist of two sharp peaks: the D-peak (≈1355 cm −1 ) and the G-peak (≈1580 cm −1 ). The spectra at the net deposition areas were very broad, which are similar to the Raman spectra of amorphous carbon. Fitting analyses of the Raman spectra for the net erosion area exhibit a linear relationship between the G-peak width (FWHM G ) and the peak intensity ratio ( I D / I G ). Comparison with the diagram derived for ion-irradiated graphite revealed that thermally unstable defects of single vacancies scarcely remained due to the power loading in this plasma exposure condition but thermally stable defects such as the dislocation dipoles could be accumulated.

The use of carbon-based materials, i.e. graphite and carbon fibre composites (CFCs), as plasma facing materials in experimental nuclear fusion devices is widely spread. For the strike point area of the ITER divertor, a European candidate material was NB31, a three directional (3D) CFC material consisting of ex-pitch, ex-PAN and needled ex-PAN fibres, which will be replaced in the future by the newly developed material NB41. This composite material is used for the fabrication of divertor components for Wendelstein 7-X. In the frame of an extensive characterization on three different material batches of NB31 called 'pilot', 'serial' and 'additional' productions for W7-X and ITER, thermo-physical measurements and tensile tests were performed. The results were correlated to density and microstructure. The latter varied due to difficulties in the manufacturing process, in particular in the needling process. Therefore the specification of a minimum density and unit cell width (combined thickness of an ex-pitch and ex-PAN layer) is necessary to meet the ITER specifications for tensile strength and for thermal conductivity in the ex-pitch direction.

Two fusion-relevant carbon fibre composites (CFCs), NB31 (3D) and DMS704 (2D), have been thermally exposed in five different orientations to simulate transient events (disruptions and ELMs). In these experiments with intense transient heat pulses in the electron beam JUDITH and the ion beam facility RHEPP-1, CFCs showed a preferential erosion of the fibre bundles aligned in the surface-plane. This phenomenon also occurred when these fibre bundles were the ones with the highest thermal conductivity. First results show that reduction of the number of fibres aligned parallel to the surface-plane strongly contributes to limiting the preferential erosion by fibre segment ejection (brittle destruction) in CFCs. Strong mechanical attachment is essential to avoid fibre segment ejection during disruption. The selection of an optimum material orientation of the available CFCs is of relevant importance and will be further investigated.

For the design and construction of ITER, the determination of effects of short transient events like edge localized modes (ELMs) has become an important issue, especially in combination with the expected deterioration of material properties caused by neutron irradiation. Hence this study deals with the evaluation of the influence of radiation effects on the thermal shock resistance of potential plasma facing materials like pure tungsten, W-Re or W-La2O3 as well as graphite and carbon fiber composites (CFCs) which were exposed to a neutron dose of ~1 dpa (in carbon) at T=200degC. In situ observations at room temperature during single and multiple shot loadings (les100 pulses) were done on macroscopic erosion (particle release), surface temperature and absorbed current. In combination of microscopic investigations of the surface morphology of the loaded area (4times4 mm2) and weight loss measurements a drastic quantitative increase of particle release after neutron irradiation was found for carbon based materials, in particular under disruption like conditions (Deltat=5 ms, P=0.8 GW/m2). For tungsten, the onset of crack formation and severe cracking was observed already for ELM like conditions (Deltat=1 ms, P=0.2 to 1.3 GW/m2), which are expected to occur with a frequency of 1 Hz during the operation of ITER.

Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. In particular, the amplitude and frequency of type I ELMs have been actively controlled over a wide parameter range (q(95) = 3-4.8, beta(N)

- Abstract
Aim: To compare the effectiveness of postoperative adjunctive use of subconjunctival bevacizumab in altering the outcome of primary trabeculectomy in terms of sustained lowering of intraocular pressure (IOP) and reduction of postoperative bleb vascularization and fibrosis., Methods: A prospective, one center, randomized, placebo-control study. Fifty-nine patients (59 eyes) with uncontrolled IOP under maximal tolerated medical treatment (MTMT) were recruited. A primary trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (MMC) was done and the patients were randomized to either postoperative subconjunctival injection of bevacizumab (1.25 mg/0.05 mL) or balanced salt solution (BSS). Forty-seven patients (47 eyes) completed at least one year of follow up and were included in the study. The main outcome measure was the IOP, and secondary outcome measures include bleb morphology, vascularization, and fibrosis, as well as the need for glaucoma medications and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) needling., Results: At 1-year follow up, there was no significant difference between groups for IOP ( P =0.65), bleb morphology ( P =0.65), and the need for glaucoma medications ( P =0.65) or 5-FU needling requirements ( P =0.11). However, the bevacizumab group had a higher rate of success results, lower use of glaucoma medications after surgery, and optimal bleb aspect in more patients, but more 5-FU needling procedures required., Conclusion: A bigger sample size is needed in order to determine whether the differences found in the bevacizumab group are statistically significant., (International Journal of Ophthalmology Press.)

- Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of paste-pinch-cut conjunctivoplasty and cautery conjunctivoplasty for the treatment of symptomatic conjunctivochalasis., Design: This was a prospective cohort study., Participants: Sixteen patients (32 eyes) with bilateral conjunctivochalasis that was symptomatic after medical therapy were enrolled in the study., Methods: This was a single-centre, contralateral eye, prospective study. Paste-pinch-cut conjunctivoplasty was performed in the left eye, and thermal cautery conjunctivoplasty was performed in the right eye. The outcomes of each procedure were compared preoperatively and at the 1-month follow-up by using the Canadian Dry Eye Assessment (CDEA) scoring system, standard conjunctivochalasis grading, and corneal staining. Intraoperative discomfort and immediate postoperative discomfort were assessed by using a 10-point scale., Results: The mean age of patients was 72.4 ± 8.67 years. Conjunctival redundancy was absent in 14 of 16 patients postoperatively. The mean CDEA score improved after both procedures (7.1 ± 2.8 preoperatively versus 4.5 ± 0.78 at the 1-month follow-up for cautery conjunctivoplasty, 7.4 ± 2.5 versus 4.9 ± 3.1 for paste-pinch-cut conjunctivoplasty). This improvement was statistically significant in the cautery conjunctivoplasty group (p = 0.012). Mean intraoperative discomfort was 2.6 ± 2.1 with the use of paste-pinch-cut conjunctivoplasty and 3.5 ± 3.2 with the use of cautery conjunctivoplasty; however, the difference was not statistically significant. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed with either technique., Conclusions: Paste-pinch-cut and thermal cautery conjunctivoplasty are both safe and effective surgical treatments for the repair of conjunctivochalasis, with patients reporting greater improvement in symptoms after the cautery technique., (Copyright © 2017 Canadian Ophthalmological Society.
