1. In ovo injection dosage of Lactobacillus rhamnosus on intestinal health and microbial composition of yellow broilers with or without Eimeria challenge

Abstract

Summary: Probiotic bacteria could be administrated to broilers using the in ovo injection technique during 17.50 and 19.20 d of incubation to accelerate microbial maturation in the intestinal tract. The effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LR) injected in-ovo on intestinal morphology, mRNA expressions of intestinal health-related genes, and selected intestinal microbial of yellow broilers with or without Eimeria challenge were studied. A total of 360 yellow broiler hatching eggs were randomly assigned into 6 treatments with 60 replicate eggs per treatment. Six treatments were arranged in a 3 (LR dosage at 0, 10⁶, and 10⁸ CFU/egg at 18.5 d of incubation) × 2 (Eimeria oocyst challenge vs. PBS challenge at 10 d of age) factorial design. Tissues and cecal contents were sampled on d 19 posthatch. Our results indicated that the coccidial infection increased duodenum, jejunum, and liver relative weights to body weight, duodenal crypt depth, and HSP90 expression, and reduced goblet cell density and Occludin expression. In ovo injection of LR at 106 CFU/egg downregulated the Occludin expression and increased the Clostridium perfringens level in Eimeria-challenged broilers. When the LR dosage increased to 10⁸ CFU/egg, relative weights of duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and liver increased, villus length of lower small intestine and cecal Lactobacillus abundance in challenged broilers were reduced, and the Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens abundances in unchallenged broilers were increased. In summary, in ovo injection of LR at a dosage equal to or higher than 106 CFU per egg exacerbated coccidial infection in the intestinal tract and resulted in cecal bacterial imbalance. The probiotic dosage must be considered for in ovo administration in broiler production.

2. Isotopic evidence for dominant secondary production of HONO in near-ground wildfire plumes

Nitrous acid (HONO) is an important precursor to hydroxyl radical (OH) that determines atmospheric oxidative capacity and thus impacts climate and air quality. Wildfire is not only a major direct source of HONO, it also results in highly polluted conditions that favor the heterogeneous formation of HONO from nitrogen oxides (NOx= NO + NO2) and nitrate on both ground and particle surfaces. However, these processes remain poorly constrained. To quantitatively constrain the HONO budget under various fire and/or smoke conditions, we combine a unique dataset of field concentrations and isotopic ratios (15N / 14N and 18O / 16O) of NOx and HONO with an isotopic box model. Here we report the first isotopic evidence of secondary HONO production in near-ground wildfire plumes (over a sample integration time of hours) and the subsequent quantification of the relative importance of each pathway to total HONO production. Most importantly, our results reveal that nitrate photolysis plays a minor role (<5 %) in HONO formation in daytime aged smoke, while NO2-to-HONO heterogeneous conversion contributes 85 %–95 % to total HONO production, followed by OH + NO (5 %–15 %). At nighttime, heterogeneous reduction of NO2 catalyzed by redox active species (e.g., iron oxide and/or quinone) is essential (≥ 75 %) for HONO production in addition to surface NO2 hydrolysis. Additionally, the 18O / 16O of HONO is used for the first time to constrain the NO-to-NO2 oxidation branching ratio between ozone and peroxy radicals. Our approach provides a new and critical way to mechanistically constrain atmospheric chemistry and/or air quality models on a diurnal timescale.

3. Characterizing the spatiotemporal nitrogen stable isotopic composition of ammonia in vehicle plumes

Abstract

Vehicle emissions have been identified as an important urban source of ammonia (NH3). However, there are large uncertainties regarding the contribution of vehicle emissions to urban NH3 budgets, as well as the role of NH3 in spatiotemporal fine particulate matter (PM2.5) formation and nitrogen (N) deposition patterns. The N stable isotopic composition (δ15N) may be a useful observational constraint to track NH3 emission sources and chemical processing, but previously reported vehicle δ15N(NH3) emission signatures have reported a wide range of values, indicating the need for further refinement. Here we have characterized δ15N(NH3) spatiotemporal variabilities from vehicle plumes in stationary and on-road measurements in the USA and China using an active NH3 collection technique demonstrated to accurately characterize δ15N(NH3) on the order of hourly time resolution. Significant spatial and temporal δ15N(NH3) variabilities were observed and suggested to be driven by vehicle fleet composition and influences from NH3 dry deposition on tunnel surfaces. Overall, a consistent δ15N(NH3) signature of 6.6±2.1 ‰ (x‾±1σ; n=80) was found in fresh vehicle plumes with fleet compositions typical of urban regions. Our recommended vehicle δ15N(NH3) signature is significantly different from previous reports. This difference is due to a large and consistent δ15N(NH3) bias of approximately −15.5 ‰ between commonly employed passive NH3 collection techniques and the laboratory-tested active NH3 collection technique. This work constrains the δ15N(NH3) urban traffic plume signature, which has important implications for tracking vehicle NH3 in urban-affected areas and highlights the importance of utilizing verified collection methods for accurately characterizing δ15N(NH3) values.

Abstract

Abstract Using a sample of $$1.31\times 10^{9} ~J/\psi $$ 1.31×109J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform a study of $$J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma K{\bar{K}}\eta '$$ J/ψ→γKK¯η′ . X(2370) is observed in the $$K{\bar{K}}\eta '$$ KK¯η′ invariant-mass distribution with a statistical significance of $$8.3\sigma $$ 8.3σ . Its resonance parameters are measured to be $$M=2341.6\pm 6.5 \, \text {(stat.)} \pm 5.7 \, \text {(syst.)}~ \hbox {MeV}/c^{2}$$ M=2341.6±6.5(stat.)±5.7(syst.)MeV/c2 and $$\Gamma = 117\pm 10 \, \text {(stat.)}\pm 8 \, \text {(syst.)}~\hbox {MeV}$$ Γ=117±10(stat.)±8(syst.)MeV . The product branching fractions for $$J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma X(2370),X(2370)\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}\eta '$$ J/ψ→γX(2370),X(2370)→K+K-η′ and $$J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma X(2370),X(2370)\rightarrow K_{S}^{0}K_{S}^{0}\eta '$$ J/ψ→γX(2370),X(2370)→KS0KS0η′ are determined to be $$(1.79\pm 0.23\, \text {(stat.)}\pm 0.65\,\text {(syst.)})\times 10^{-5}$$ (1.79±0.23(stat.)±0.65(syst.))×10-5 and $$(1.18\pm 0.32\, \text {(stat.)}\pm 0.39\, \text {(syst.)})\times 10^{-5}$$ (1.18±0.32(stat.)±0.39(syst.))×10-5 , respectively. No evident signal for X(2120) is observed in the $$K{\bar{K}}\eta '$$ KK¯η′ invariant-mass distribution. The upper limits for the product branching fractions of $${\mathcal {B}}(J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma X(2120)\rightarrow \gamma K^{+} K^{-} \eta ')$$ B(J/ψ→γX(2120)→γK+K-η′) and $${\mathcal {B}}(J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma X(2120)\rightarrow \gamma K_{S}^{0} K_{S}^{0} \eta ')$$ B(J/ψ→γX(2120)→γKS0KS0η′) are determined to be $$1.49\times 10^{-5}$$ 1.49×10-5 and $$6.38\times 10^{-6}$$ 6.38×10-6 at the 90% confidence level, respectively.

5. Isotopic characterization of nitrogen oxides (NOx), nitrous acid (HONO), and nitrate (pNO3−) from laboratory biomass burning during FIREX

Abstract

New techniques have recently been developed and applied to capture reactive nitrogen species, including nitrogen oxides (NOx=NO+NO2), nitrous acid (HONO), nitric acid (HNO3), and particulate nitrate (pNO3-), for accurate measurement of their isotopic composition. Here, we report – for the first time – the isotopic composition of HONO from biomass burning (BB) emissions collected during the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments Experiment (FIREX, later evolved into FIREX-AQ) at the Missoula Fire Science Laboratory in the fall of 2016. We used our newly developed annular denuder system (ADS), which was verified to completely capture HONO associated with BB in comparison with four other high-time-resolution concentration measurement techniques, including mist chamber–ion chromatography (MC–IC), open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (OP-FTIR), cavity-enhanced spectroscopy (CES), and proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF). In 20 “stack” fires (direct emission within ∼5 s of production by the fire) that burned various biomass materials from the western US, δ15N–NOx ranges from −4.3 ‰ to +7.0 ‰, falling near the middle of the range reported in previous work. The first measurements of δ15N–HONO and δ18O–HONO in biomass burning smoke reveal a range of −5.3 ‰ to +5.8 ‰ and +5.2 ‰ to +15.2 ‰, respectively. Both HONO and NOx are sourced from N in the biomass fuel, and δ15N–HONO and δ15N–NOx are strongly correlated (R2=0.89, p), suggesting HONO is directly formed via subsequent chain reactions of NOx emitted from biomass combustion. Only 5 of 20 pNO3- samples had a sufficient amount for isotopic analysis and showed δ15N and δ18O of pNO3- ranging from −10.6 ‰ to −7.4 ‰ and +11.5 ‰ to +14.8 ‰, respectively. Our δ15N of NOx, HONO, and pNO3- ranges can serve as important biomass burning source signatures, useful for constraining emissions of these species in environmental applications. The δ18O of HONO and NO3- obtained here verify that our method is capable of determining the oxygen isotopic composition in BB plumes. The δ18O values for both of these species reflect laboratory conditions (i.e., a lack of photochemistry) and would be expected to track with the influence of different oxidation pathways in real environments. The methods used in this study will be further applied in future field studies to quantitatively track reactive nitrogen cycling in fresh and aged western US wildfire plumes.

Abstract

Using 16 energy points of e+e− annihilation data collected in the vicinity of the J/ψ resonance with the BESIII detector and with a total integrated luminosity of around 100pb−1, we study the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of J/ψ decays. The relative phase between J/ψ electromagnetic decay and the continuum process (e+e− annihilation without the J/ψ resonance) is confirmed to be zero by studying the cross section lineshape of μ+μ− production. The relative phase between J/ψ strong and electromagnetic decays is then measured to be (84.9±3.6)∘ or (−84.7±3.1)∘ for the 2(π+π−)π0 final state by investigating the interference pattern between the J/ψ decay and the continuum process. This is the first measurement of the relative phase between J/ψ strong and electromagnetic decays into a multihadron final state using the lineshape of the production cross section. We also study the production lineshape of the multihadron final state ηπ+π− with η→π+π−π0, which provides additional information about the phase between the J/ψ electromagnetic decay amplitude and the continuum process. Additionally, the branching fraction of J/ψ→2(π+π−)π0 is measured to be (4.73±0.44)% or (4.85±0.45)%, and the branching fraction of J/ψ→ηπ+π− is measured to be (3.78±0.68)×10−4. Both of them are consistent with the world average values. The quoted uncertainties include both statistical and systematic uncertainties, which are mainly caused by the low statistics. Abstract

We report a study of the e+e−→D+D−π+π− process using e+e− collision data samples with an integrated luminosity of 2.5fb−1 at center-of-mass energies from 4.36 to 4.60GeV, collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The D1(2420)+ is observed in the D+π+π− mass spectrum. The mass and width of the D1(2420)+ are measured to be (2427.2±1.0stat.±1.2syst.)MeV/c2 and (23.2±2.3stat.±2.3syst.)MeV, respectively. In addition, the Born cross sections of the e+e−→D1(2420)+D−+c.c.→D+D−π+π− and e+e−→ψ(3770)π+π−→D+D−π+π− processes are measured as a function of the center-of-mass energy.

Abstract

Using a data sample of e+e− collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1 collected with the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of s=3.773GeV, we search for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays D0→π0π0π0, π0π0η, π0ηη and ηηη using the double tag method. The absolute branching fractions are measured to be B(D0→π0π0π0)=(2.0±0.4±0.3)×10−4, B(D0→π0π0η)=(3.8±1.1±0.7)×10−4 and B(D0→π0ηη)=(7.3±1.6±1.5)×10−4 with the statistical significances of 4.8σ, 3.8σ and 5.5σ, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. No significant signal of D0→ηηη is found, and the upper limit on its decay branching fraction is set to be B(D0→ηηη)

Abstract

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at six center-of-mass energies between 4.008 and 4.600 GeV, we observe the processes e+e−→ϕϕω and e+e−→ϕϕϕ. The Born cross sections are measured and the ratio of the cross sections σ(e+e−→ϕϕω)/σ(e+e−→ϕϕϕ) is estimated to be 1.75±0.22±0.19 averaged over six energy points, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The results represent first measurements of these interactions.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the decay Λc+→Σ−π+π+π0, based on data obtained in e+e− annihilations with an integrated luminosity of 567 pb−1 at s=4.6 GeV. The data were collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage rings. The absolute branching fraction B(Λc+→Σ−π+π+π0) is determined to be (2.11±0.33(stat.)±0.14(syst.))%. In addition, an improved measurement of B(Λ+c→Σ−π+π+) is determined as (1.81±0.17(stat.)±0.09(syst.))%.

Abstract

Based on e+e− annihilation data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at 13 center-of-mass energies from 4.008 to 4.600 GeV, measurements of the Born cross section of e+e−→pp¯π0 are performed. No significant resonant structure is observed in the measured energy dependence of the cross section. The upper limit on the Born cross section of e+e−→Y(4260)→pp¯π0 at the 90% C.L. is determined to be 0.01 pb. The upper limit on the ratio of the branching fractions B(Y(4260)→pp¯π0)B(Y(4260)→π+π−J/ψ) at the 90% C.L. is determined to be 0.02%. Keywords: Hadrons, Cross section measurements, Y(4260)

Abstract

We study the decays of J/ψ and ψ(3686) to the final states Σ(1385)0Σ¯(1385)0 and Ξ0Ξ¯0 based on a single baryon tag method using data samples of (1310.6±7.0)×106 J/ψ and (447.9±2.9)×106 ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The decays to Σ(1385)0Σ¯(1385)0 are observed for the first time. The measured branching fractions of J/ψ and ψ(3686) to Ξ0Ξ¯0 are in good agreement with, and much more precise than, the previously published results. The angular parameters for these decays are also measured for the first time. The measured angular decay parameter for J/ψ→Σ(1385)0Σ¯(1385)0, α=−0.64±0.03±0.10, is found to be negative, different to the other decay processes in this measurement. In addition, the “12% rule” and isospin symmetry in the decays of J/ψ and ψ(3686) to ΞΞ¯ and Σ(1385)Σ¯(1385) are tested.

Abstract

By analyzing 2.93fb−1 of data taken at the ψ(3770) resonance peak with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fractions for the hadronic decays D+→KS0KS0K+, D+→KS0KS0π+, D0→KS0KS0 and D0→KS0KS0KS0. They are determined to be B(D+→KS0KS0K+)=(2.54±0.05stat.±0.12sys.)×10−3, B(D+→KS0KS0π+)=(2.70±0.05stat.±0.12sys.)×10−3, B(D0→KS0KS0)=(1.67±0.11stat.±0.11sys.)×10−4 and B(D0→KS0KS0KS0)=(7.21±0.33stat.±0.44sys.)×10−4, where the second one is measured for the first time and the others are measured with significantly improved precision over the previous measurements.

Abstract

The four decay modes D0→ϕπ0, D0→ϕη, D+→ϕπ+, and D+→ϕK+ are studied by using a data sample taken at the centre-of-mass energy s=3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1. The branching fractions of the first three decay modes are measured to be B(D0→ϕπ0)=(1.168±0.028±0.028)×10−3, B(D0→ϕη)=(1.81±0.46±0.06)×10−4, and B(D+→ϕπ+)=(5.70±0.05±0.13)×10−3, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. In addition, the upper limit of the branching fraction for D+→ϕK+ is given to be 2.1×10−5 at the 90% confidence level. The ratio of B(D0→ϕπ0) to B(D+→ϕπ+) is calculated to be (20.49±0.50±0.45)%, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction based on isospin symmetry between these two decay modes. Abstract

Electron band alignment at interfaces of SiO2 with directly synthesized few-monolayer (ML) thin semiconducting MoS2 films is characterized by using field-dependent internal photoemission of electrons from the valence band of MoS2 into the oxide conduction band. We found that reducing the grown MoS2 film thickness from 3 ML to 1 ML leads to ≈400 meV downshift of the valence band top edge as referenced to the common energy level of the SiO2 conduction band bottom. Furthermore, comparison of the MoS2 layers grown by a H-free process (sputtering of Mo in sulfur vapor) to films synthesized by sulfurization of metallic Mo in H2S indicates a significant (≈500 meV) electron barrier increase in the last case. This effect is tentatively ascribed to the formation of an interface dipole due to the interaction of hydrogen with the oxide surface.

16. High-Efficient Parallel CAVLC Encoders on Heterogeneous Multicore Architectures

Abstract

This article presents two high-efficient parallel realizations of the context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) based on heterogeneous multicore processors. By optimizing the architecture of the CAVLC encoder, three kinds of dependences are eliminated or weaken, including the context-based data dependence, the memory accessing dependence and the control dependence. The CAVLC pipeline is divided into three stages: two scans, coding, and lag packing, and be implemented on two typical heterogeneous multicore architectures. One is a block-based SIMD parallel CAVLC encoder on multicore stream processor STORM. The other is a component-oriented SIMT parallel encoder on massively parallel architecture GPU. Both of them exploited rich data-level parallelism. Experiments results show that compared with the CPU version, more than 70 times of speedup can be obtained for STORM and over 50 times for GPU. The implementation of encoder on STORM can make a real-time processing for 1080p @30fps and GPU-based version can satisfy the requirements for 720p real-time encoding. The throughput of the presented CAVLC encoders is more than 10 times higher than that of published software encoders on DSP and multicore platforms.

17. Bioprosthetic Pulmonary Valve Dysfunction in Congenital Heart Disease

Abstract

We aim to identify the incidence and timing of dysfunction and failure of stented bioprosthetic valves in the pulmonary position in congenital heart disease patients.A total of 482 congenital heart disease patients underwent 484 stented bioprosthetic pulmonary valve implantations between 2008 and 2018. There were 164 porcine valves (Porcine) and 320 bovine pericardial valves (Pericardial) implanted. Primary endpoints were survival, valve dysfunction, and valve failure.Pericardial valves were implanted in older patients (22.0, interquartile range [IQR] 14-33 vs 16.0, IQR 11-23 years, P0.001). Five-year survival (96.7% vs 97.9%) for the Pericardial and Porcine groups, respectively, were similar, P0.05. Forty-six (34%) Porcine and 75 (27%) Pericardial group patients met criteria for valve dysfunction at a median echocardiographic follow-up time of 7.43 years (IQR 4.1-9.5 years) and 3.26 years (IQR 1.7-4.7 years), respectively. More Pericardial group patients suffered from at least mild late PR while late median peak gradient was higher in the Porcine group, P.001 for both. Risk factors for valve dysfunction included decreasing patient age for the entire cohort (hazard ratio [HR] 1.02, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00-1.04, P = .015) and lack of anticoagulation at discharge for the Porcine group (HR 3.06, 95% CI 1.03-9.10, P = .044) but not the Pericardial group. Five-year cumulative incidence of dysfunction was 39% for the Pericardial group and 17% for the Porcine group.Porcine stented and bovine pericardial stented valves can be implanted in the pulmonary position in all age groups safely. However, despite similar rates of valve failure, bovine pericardial stented valves have a higher incidence of valve dysfunction at mid-term follow-up.

Abstract

Recollection of past events has been associated with the core recollection network comprising the posterior medial temporal lobe and parietal regions, as well as the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). The development of the brain basis for recollection is understudied. In a sample of adults (n = 22; 18–25 years) and children (n = 23; 9–13 years), the present study aimed to address this knowledge gap using a cued recall paradigm, known to elicit recollection experience. Successful recall was associated with activations in regions of the core recollection network and frontoparietal network. Adults exhibited greater successful recall activations compared with children in the precuneus and right angular gyrus. In contrast, similar levels of successful recall activations were observed in both age groups in the mPFC. Group differences were also seen in the hippocampus and lateral frontal regions. These findings suggest that the engagement of the mPFC in episodic retrieval may be relatively early maturing, whereas the contribution to episodic retrieval of more posterior regions such as the precuneus and angular gyrus undergoes more protracted maturation.

20. Cardiac surgery in children with trisomy 13 or trisomy 18: How safe is it?

Abstract

Surgery for heart defects in children with trisomy 13 or 18 is controversial. We analyzed our 20-year experience.Since 2002, we performed 21 operations in 19 children with trisomy 13 (n = 8) or trisomy 18 (n = 11). Age at operation was 4 days to 12 years (median, 154 days). Principal diagnosis was ventricular septal defect in 10 patients, tetralogy of Fallot in 7 patients, arch hypoplasia in 1 patient, and patent ductus arteriosus in 1 patient.The initial operation was ventricular septal defect closure in 9 patients, tetralogy of Fallot repair in 7 patients, pulmonary artery banding in 1 patient, patent ductus arteriosus ligation in 1 patient, and aortic arch/coarctation repair in 1 patient. There were no operative or hospital deaths. Median postoperative intensive care and hospital stays were 189 hours (interquartile range, 70-548) and 14 days (interquartile range, 8.0-37.0), respectively, compared with median hospital stays in our center for ventricular septal defect repair of 4.0 days and tetralogy of Fallot repair of 5.0 days. On median follow-up of 17.4 months (interquartile range, 6.0-68), 1 patient was lost to follow-up after 5 months. Two patients had reoperation without mortality. There have been 5 late deaths (4 with trisomy 18, 1 with trisomy 13) predominately due to respiratory failure from 4 months to 9.4 years postoperatively. Five-year survival was 66.6% compared with 24% in a group of unoperated patients with trisomy 13 or 18.Cardiac operation with an emphasis on complete repair can be performed safely in carefully selected children with trisomy 13 or trisomy 18. Hospital resource use measured by postoperative intensive care and hospital stays is considerably greater compared with nontrisomy 13 and 18.

21. Hydration behavior of geosynthetic clay liner with polymerized bentonite

The hydration behavior of a GCL with polymerized bentonite (PB-GCL) was investigated by laboratory column tests in terms of hydration gravimetric water content (w), apparent degree of saturation ([Formula: see text])and air permeability (kair), and compared with those of a GCL with natural bentonite as the core (NB-GCL). In cases of deionized water (DI water) and 0.1 M NaCl solution as pore water of the subsoil, the PB-GCL had higher final w values than the NB-GCL, but the values of [Formula: see text] are similar. The values of kair of the PB-GCL are approximately four orders lower than that of the NB-GCL. In addition, kair of the PB-GCL at [Formula: see text] = 40% is comparable with that of the NB-GCL at [Formula: see text] = 70%. In the case of the subsoil with 0.6 M NaCl solution, the final value of kair of the PB-GCL is about half of the NB-GCL. These results indicate that cation concentration in a subsoil has a considerable influence on the hydration behavior of a GCL. It is suggested that the PB-GCL has a better hydration performance than the NB-GCL.

Abstract

Information learned in relation to oneself is typically better remembered, termed the self-reference effect (SRE). This study aimed to elucidate the developmental trajectory of the SRE in recollection and source memory from mid-childhood to young adulthood. In 2018-2019 in Baltimore, Maryland, 136 seven- to thirty-year-olds (77 female; approximately 80% White, 15% Asian American, 5% Black) viewed objects on one of two backgrounds and answered a self-referential or semantic question for each. A recognition test probed memory for objects and source details (inherent: question type; peripheral: background image). SRE increased with age for detailed recollection (r = .189), but not familiarity, and extended to inherent source memory. This suggests that self-referencing promotes richer memory in children and develops into young adulthood.

26. Graincast™: monitoring crop production across the Australian grainbelt

Abstract

The Australian dryland grain-cropping landscape occupies 60 Mha. The broader agricultural sector (farmers and agronomic advisors, grain handlers, commodity forecasters, input suppliers, insurance providers) required information at many spatial and temporal scales. Temporal scales included hindcasts, nowcasts and forecasts, at spatial scales ranging from sub-field to the continent. International crop-monitoring systems could not service the need of local industry for digital information on crop production estimates. Therefore, we combined a broad suite of satellite-based crop-mapping, crop-modelling and data-delivery techniques to create an integrated analytics system (Graincast™) that covers the Australian cropping landscape. In parallel with technical developments, a set of user requirements was identified through a human-centred design process, resulting in an end-product that delivered a viable crop-monitoring service to industry. This integrated analytics solution can now produce crop information at scale and on demand and can deliver the output via an application programming interface. The technology was designed to underpin digital agriculture developments for Australia. End-users are now using crop-monitoring data for operational purposes, and we argue that a vertically integrated data supply chain is required to develop crop-monitoring technology further.

Abstract

Recent data have demonstrated that overall mortality and adverse events are not significantly different for primary repair (PR) and staged repair (SR) approaches to management of neonates with symptomatic tetralogy of Fallot (sTOF). Cost data can be used to compare the relative value (cost for similar outcomes) of these approaches and are a potentially more sensitive measure of morbidity.This study sought to compare the economic costs associated with PR and SR in neonates with sTOF.Data from a multicenter retrospective cohort study of neonates with sTOF were merged with administrative data to compare total costs and cost per day alive over the first 18 months of life in a propensity score-adjusted analysis. A secondary analysis evaluated differences in department-level costs.In total, 324 subjects from 6 centers from January 2011 to November 2017 were studied (40% PR). The 18-month cumulative mortality (P = 0.18), procedural complications (P = 0.10), hospital complications (P = 0.94), and reinterventions (P = 0.22) did not differ between PR and SR. Total 18-month costs for PR (median $179,494 [IQR: $121,760-$310,721]) were less than for SR (median: $222,799 [IQR: $167,581-$327,113]) (P 0.001). Cost per day alive (P = 0.005) and department-level costs were also all lower for PR. In propensity score-adjusted analyses, PR was associated with lower total cost (cost ratio: 0.73; P 0.001) and lower department-level costs.In this multicenter study of neonates with sTOF, PR was associated with lower costs. Given similar overall mortality between treatment strategies, this finding suggests that PR provides superior value.

Abstract

Atmospheric dioxygen (O2) concentration and isotopic composition are closely linked to the carbon cycle through anthropic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and biological processes such as photosynthesis and respiration. The measurement of the isotopic ratio of O2, trapped in ice core bubbles, brings information about past variation in the hydrological cycle at low latitudes, as well as past productivity. Currently, the interpretation of those variations could be drastically improved with a better (i.e., quantitative) knowledge of the oxygen isotopic fractionation that occurs during photosynthesis and respiration processes. This could be achieved, for example, during experiments using closed biological chambers. In order to estimate the isotopic fractionation coefficient with good precision, one of the principal limitations is the need for high-frequency online measurements of isotopic composition of O2, expressed as δ18O of O2 (δ18O(O2)) and O2 concentration. To address this issue, we developed a new instrument, based on the optical-feedback cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (OF-CEAS) technique, enabling high-temporal-resolution and continuous measurements of O2 concentration as well as δ18O(O2), both simultaneously. The minimum Allan deviation occurred between 10 and 20 min, while precision reached 0.002 % for the O2 concentration and 0.06 ‰ for δ18O(O2), which correspond to the optimal integration time and analytical precision before instrumental drift started degrading the measurements. Instrument accuracy was in good agreement with dual-inlet isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). Measured values were slightly affected by humidity, and we decided to measure δ18O(O2) and O2 concentration after drying the gas. On the other hand, a 1 % increase in O2 concentration increased the δ18O(O2) by 0.53 ‰. To ensure the good quality of O2 concentration and δ18O(O2) measurements we eventually proposed to measure the calibration standard every 20 min.

Abstract

There is considerable individual variability in second language (L2) learning abilities in adulthood. The inferior parietal lobule, important in L2 learning success, is anatomically connected to language areas in the frontal lobe via the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF). The second and third branches of the SLF (SLF II and III) have not been examined separately in the context of language, yet they are known to have dissociable frontoparietal connections. Studying these pathways and their functional contributions to L2 learning is thus of great interest. Using diffusion MRI tractography, we investigated individuals undergoing language training to explore brain structural predictors of L2 learning success. We dissected SLF II and III using gold-standard anatomical definitions and related prelearning white matter integrity to language improvements corresponding with hypothesized tract functions. SLF II properties predicted improvement in lexical retrieval, while SLF III properties predicted improvement in articulation rate. Finer grained separation of these pathways enables better understanding of their distinct roles in language, which is essential for studying how anatomical connectivity relates to L2 learning abilities.

Abstract

Although COVID-19-associated hospitalizations and deaths have occurred more frequently in adults,† COVID-19 can also lead to severe outcomes in children and adolescents (1,2). Schools are opening for in-person learning, and many prekindergarten children are returning to early care and education programs during a time when the number of COVID-19 cases caused by the highly transmissible B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is increasing.§ Therefore, it is important to monitor indicators of severe COVID-19 among children and adolescents. This analysis uses Coronavirus Disease 2019-Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET)¶ data to describe COVID-19-associated hospitalizations among U.S. children and adolescents aged 0-17 years. During March 1, 2020-August 14, 2021, the cumulative incidence of COVID-19-associated hospitalizations was 49.7 per 100,000 children and adolescents. The weekly COVID-19-associated hospitalization rate per 100,000 children and adolescents during the week ending August 14, 2021 (1.4) was nearly five times the rate during the week ending June 26, 2021 (0.3); among children aged 0-4 years, the weekly hospitalization rate during the week ending August 14, 2021, was nearly 10 times that during the week ending June 26, 2021.** During June 20-July 31, 2021, the hospitalization rate among unvaccinated adolescents (aged 12-17 years) was 10.1 times higher than that among fully vaccinated adolescents. Among all hospitalized children and adolescents with COVID-19, the proportions with indicators of severe disease (such as intensive care unit [ICU] admission) after the Delta variant became predominant (June 20-July 31, 2021) were similar to those earlier in the pandemic (March 1, 2020-June 19, 2021). Implementation of preventive measures to reduce transmission and severe outcomes in children is critical, including vaccination of eligible persons, universal mask wearing in schools, recommended mask wearing by persons aged ≥2 years in other indoor public spaces and child care centers,†† and quarantining as recommended after exposure to persons with COVID-19.§§.

COVID-19-associated hospitalization rates are highest among adults aged ≥65 years (1); however, COVID-19 can and does cause severe and fatal outcomes in children, including infants (2,3). After the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.529 (Omicron) BA.1 variant in December 2021, hospitalizations among children aged5 years, who were ineligible for vaccination, increased more rapidly than did those in other age groups (4). 35. Trapped waves on interfacial hydraulic falls over bottom obstacles

Abstract

Hydraulic falls on the interface of a two-layer density stratified fluid flow in the presence of bottom topography are considered. We extend the previous work [Philos. Trans. R. Soc. London A 360, 2137 (2002)] to two successive bottom obstructions of arbitrary shape. The forced Korteweg-de Vries and modified Korteweg-de Vries equations are derived in different asymptotic limits to understand the existence and classification of fall solutions. The full Euler equations are numerically solved by a boundary integral equation method. New solutions characterized by a train of trapped waves are found for interfacial flows past two obstacles. The wavelength of the trapped waves agrees well with the prediction of the linear dispersion relation. In addition, the effects of the relative location, aspect ratio, and convexity-concavity property of the obstacles on interface profiles are investigated.

Abstract

In January 2020, Santa Clara County, California, USA, began identifying laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease among residents. County staff conducted case and contact investigations focused on households and collected detailed case demographic, occupation, exposure, and outcome information. We describe the first 200 test-positive cases during January 31-March 20, 2020, to inform future case and contact investigations. Probable infection sources included community transmission (104 cases), known close contact with a confirmed case-patient (66 cases), and travel (30 cases). Disease patterns across race and ethnicity, occupational, and household factors suggested multiple infection risk factors. Disproportionately high percentages of case-patients from racial and ethnic subgroups worked outside the home (Hispanic [86%] and Filipino [100%]); household transmission was more common among persons from Vietnam (53%). Even with the few initial cases, detailed case and contact investigations of household contacts capturing occupational and disaggregated race and ethnicity data helped identify at-risk groups and focused solutions for disease control.

Abstract

Timber pile is an ancient technology applied in soft ground improvement for more than 1000 years. With the rise of many high-rise buildings, many types of modern mechanized-construction piles are widely developed and applied; for example, steel pile, precast concrete pile, sand pile, and gravel pile are widely used instead of timber piles. Yet, in some special conditions, timber piles have certain advantages due to their environment-friendly characteristics, which result in obvious economic benefits and suitability. To overcome the weakness of the traditional timber pile technology and expand its application in engineering practice, a drained-timber pile technique was put forward. This technology is to wrap the permeable filter-type drainage geotextile around the timber pile, so that the timber pile not only has the replacement function to strengthen the foundation but also has the drainage function, can accelerate the pore water discharge, and speeds up the soft soil foundation consolidation. The reduced scale soil-column consolidation model was designed to perform the consolidation tests for the soil column with a drained-timber rod. In total, eight types of soil-column consolidation tests were carried out to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the drained-timber pile technique. The results revealed that, under the same loading and consolidation time, the drained-timber rod can obviously increase the degree of consolidation when compared with traditional timber rod. It can be expected that the drained-timber pile technique has a good application prospect for the construction of medium-small hydraulic structures and for the treatment of super soft clay.

38. Reliable water vapour isotopic composition measurements at low humidity using frequency-stabilised cavity ring-down spectroscopy

Abstract

In situ measurements of water vapour isotopic composition in polar regions has provided needed constrains of post-deposition processes involved in the archiving of the climatic signal in ice core records. During polar winter, the temperatures, and thus the specific humidity, are so low that current commercial techniques are not able to measure the vapour isotopic composition with enough precision. Here, we make use of new developments in infrared spectroscopy and combine an optical-feedback frequency-stabilised laser source (OFFS technique) using a V-shaped cavity optical feedback (VCOF) cavity and a high-finesse cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) cavity to increase the signal-to-noise ratio while measuring absorption transitions of water isotopes. We present a laboratory infrared spectrometer leveraging all these techniques dedicated to measure water vapour isotopic composition at low humidity levels. At 400 ppmv, the instrument demonstrates a precision of 0.01 ‰ and 0.1 ‰ in δ18O and d-excess, respectively, for an integration time of 2 min. This set-up yields an isotopic composition precision below 1 ‰ at water mixing ratios down to 4 ppmv, which suggests an extrapolated precision in δ18O of 1.5 ‰ at 1 ppmv. Indeed, thanks to the stabilisation of the laser by the VCOF, the instrument exhibits extremely low drift and very high signal-to-noise ratio. The instrument is not hindered by a strong isotope–humidity response which at low humidity can create extensive biases on commercial instruments.

Abstract

A proof of concept for using paper test as a suitable method in the production of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) is reported. The paper test which detects antibodies against porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) using colloidal gold-labelled capsid protein as the antigen probe was applied exclusively in the screening of anti-PCV2 MAbs. It allowed the detection of 118 single cell clones within 30 min using naked eyes. MAbs with specific binding to authentic epitopes on the virus were selected using a blocking strategy in which the antibody was pre-incubated with PCV2 viral sample before applying to the test paper. Five hybridomas secreting MAbs against the capsid protein were obtained, with only three of them capable of binding to PCV2. The results were validated and confirmed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunofluorescence assay. The paper test is simple, rapid, and independent on professional technicians and proves to be an excellent approach for the screening of MAbs against specific targets.

Abstract

Influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2 are significant causes of respiratory illness in children.Influenza and COVID-19-associated hospitalizations among children18 years old were analyzed from FluSurv-NET and COVID-NET, two population-based surveillance systems with similar catchment areas and methodology. The annual COVID-19-associated hospitalization rate per 100 000 during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (October 1, 2020-September 30, 2021) was compared to influenza-associated hospitalization rates during the 2017-18 through 2019-20 influenza seasons. In-hospital outcomes, including intensive care unit (ICU) admission and death, were compared.Among children18 years old, the COVID-19-associated hospitalization rate (48.2) was higher than influenza-associated hospitalization rates: 2017-18 (33.5), 2018-19 (33.8), and 2019-20 (41.7). The COVID-19-associated hospitalization rate was higher among adolescents 12-17 years old (COVID-19: 59.9; influenza range: 12.2-14.1), but similar or lower among children 5-11 (COVID-19: 25.0; influenza range: 24.3-31.7) and 0-4 (COVID-19: 66.8; influenza range: 70.9-91.5) years old. Among children18 years old, a higher proportion with COVID-19 required ICU admission compared with influenza (26.4% vs 21.6%; p 0.01). Pediatric deaths were uncommon during both COVID-19- and influenza-associated hospitalizations (0.7% vs 0.5%; p = 0.28).In the setting of extensive mitigation measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual COVID-19-associated hospitalization rate during 2020-2021 was higher among adolescents and similar or lower among children12 years old compared with influenza during the three seasons before the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 adds substantially to the existing burden of pediatric hospitalizations and severe outcomes caused by influenza and other respiratory viruses.

Abstract

Body mass index, race/ethnicity, and payer status are associated with operative mortality in congenital heart disease (CHD). Interactions between these predictors and impacts on longer term outcomes are less well understood. We studied the effect of body mass index, race/ethnicity, and payer on 1-year outcomes following elective CHD surgery and tested the degree to which race/ethnicity and payer explained the effects of body mass index. We hypothesized that body mass index might be a potentially modifiable risk factor for post-operative outcomes. Patients aged 2–25 years who underwent elective CHD surgery at our center from 2010 to 2017 were included. We assessed 1-year unplanned cardiac re-admissions, re-interventions, and mortality. Step-wise, multivariable logistic regression was performed. Of 929 patients, 10.4% were underweight, 14.9% overweight, and 8.5% obese. Non-white race/ethnicity comprised 40.4% and public insurance 29.8%. Only 0.5% died prior to hospital discharge with one additional death in the first post-operative year. Among patients with continuous follow up, unplanned re-admission and re-intervention rates were 14.7% and 12.3%, respectively. Abstract

Utilization of ventricular assist devices (VADs) in adult populations with severe heart failure as a bridge to transplant has become the standard of care over the past two decades. Analogously, the use of VADs in pediatric populations has become more commonplace as pediatric heart transplantation has become more prevalent. We still have much to learn, however, about the complications after VAD placement in pediatric patients, their impact on transplantation and, in particular, how outcomes have changed over time. The objectives of this study were to (a) review the experience of a single pediatric VAD center, (b) identify risk factors that could lead to poor outcomes in patients on the transplant waitlist after VAD implantation and (c) demonstrate changes in outcomes over time. A retrospective cohort analysis was performed comparing death as a primary outcome and stroke and acute kidney injury (AKI) as secondary outcomes, across the study period divided into three timed eras. We analyzed 88 patients supported by a VAD over a 24-year timeframe. The duration, age at implant and indication for VAD support did not change significantly across the eras. We found that the incidence of stroke decreased over the study period and, while the rates of AKI did not change over the study period, those who developed AKI, while supported on VAD, had an increased risk of death.

Abstract

The Camp Fire, California's deadliest wildfire, began November 8, 2018, and was extinguished November 25 (1). Approximately 1,100 evacuees from the fire sought emergency shelter. On November 10, acute gastroenteritis (AGE) was reported in two evacuation shelters; norovirus illness was suspected, because it is commonly detected in shelter-associated AGE outbreaks. Norovirus is highly contagious and resistant to several disinfectants. Butte County Public Health Department (BCPHD), assisted by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), initiated active surveillance to identify cases, confirm the etiology, and assess shelter infection prevention and control (IPC) practices to guide recommendations. During November 8-30, a total of 292 patients with AGE were identified among nine evacuation shelters; norovirus was detected in 16 of 17 unique patient stool specimens. Shelter IPC assessments revealed gaps in illness surveillance, isolation practices, cleaning, disinfection, and handwashing. CDPH and BCPHD collaborated with partner agencies to implement AGE screening, institute isolation protocols and 24-hour cleaning services, and promote proper hand hygiene. During disasters with limited resources, damaged infrastructure, and involvement of multiple organizations, establishing shelter disease surveillance and IPC is difficult. However, prioritizing effective surveillance and IPC at shelter activation is necessary to prevent, identify, and contain outbreaks.

Abstract

Background: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) can provide crucial support for single ventricle (SV) patients at various stages of palliation. However, characterization of the utilization and outcomes of ECMO in these unique patients remains incompletely studied. Methods: We performed a single-center retrospective review of SV patients between 2010 and 2017 who underwent ECMO cannulation with primary end point of survival to discharge and secondary end point of survival to decannulation or orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT). Multivariate analysis was performed for factors predictive of survival to discharge and survival to decannulation. Results: Forty SV patients with a median age of one month (range: 3 days to 15 years) received ECMO support. The incidence of ECMO was 14% for stage I, 3% for stage II, and 4% for stage III. Twenty-seven (68%) patients survived to decannulation, and 21 (53%) patients survived to discharge, with seven survivors to discharge undergoing OHT. Complications included infection (40%), bleeding (40%), thrombosis (33%), and radiographic stroke (45%). Factors associated with survival to decannulation included pre-ECMO lactate (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.61, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.41-0.90, P = .013) and post-ECMO bicarbonate (HR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.0-1.5, P = .018). Factors associated with survival to discharge included central cannulation (HR: 40.0, 95% CI: 3.1-500.0, P = .005) and lack of thrombotic complications (HR: 28.7, 95% CI: 2.1-382.9, P = .011). Conclusions: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation can be useful to rescue SV patients with approximately half surviving to discharge, although complications are frequent. Early recognition of the role of heart transplant is imperative. Further study is required to identify areas for improvement in this population.

Abstract

Neonates with symptomatic tetralogy of Fallot (sTOF) may undergo palliations with varying physiology, namely systemic to pulmonary artery connections (SPC) or right ventricular outflow tract interventions (RVOTI). A comparison of palliative strategies based on the physiology created is lacking. Consecutive sTOF neonates undergoing SPC or RVOTI from 2005-2017 were reviewed from the Congenital Cardiac Research Collaborative. The primary outcome was survival with successful complete repair (CR) by 18 months. A variety of secondary outcomes were assessed including overall survival, hospitalization-related comorbidities, and interstage reinterventions. Propensity score adjustment was utilized to compare treatment strategies. The cohort included 252 SPC (surgical shunt = 226, ductus arteriosus stent = 26) and 68 RVOTI (balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty = 48, RVOT stent = 11, RVOT patch = 9) patients. Genetic syndrome (29 [42.6%] v 75 [29.8%], p = 0.04), weight 2.5 kg (28 [41.2%] v 68 [27.0%], p = 0.023), bilateral pulmonary artery Z-score - 2 (19 [28.0%] v 36 [14.3%], p = 0.008), and pre-intervention antegrade flow (48 [70.6%] v 104 [41.3%], p 0.001) were more common in RVOTI. Significant center differences were noted (p 0.001). Adjusted survival to CR by 18 months (HR = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.63-1.21, p = 0.41) and overall survival (HR = 2.08, 95% CI = 0.93-4.65, p = 0.074) were similar. RVOTI had increased interstage reintervention (HR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.36-3.99, p = 0.001). Total anesthesia (243 [213, 277] v 328 [308, 351] minutes, p 0.001) and cardiopulmonary bypass times (117 [103, 132] v 151 [143, 160] minutes, p 0.001) favored RVOTI. In this multicenter comparison of physiologic palliation strategies for sTOF, survival to successful CR and overall survival were similar; however, reintervention burden was significantly higher in RVOTI.
