One of the ways to extend the lifetime of the divertor for DEMO could be to replace the solid tungsten plasma-facing components with liquid tin (Sn) confined in a tungsten capillary porous structure (CPS). Testing a CPS in a divertor plasma configuration is crucial for the development of a liquid metal divertor (LMD) to understand how the main plasma is affected. Only a limited Sn concentration is allowed in the plasma core, due to the high radiative losses associated with the high atomic number of Sn (50). Therefore, it is necessary to test a small-scale LMD filled with Sn in a tokamak environment, which has not previously been done. In ASDEX Upgrade, a liquid tin module (LTM) has been exposed by means of the divertor manipulator. During plasma flat-top, the outer strike point (OSP) was placed onto the pre-heated LTM and held there for a time interval between 2 and 3.4s over multiple discharges. Photographs of the LTM taken after each discharge, revealed macroscopic Sn leakage onto the adjacent tile. Simulations with the HeatLMD code predicted an acceptable tin erosion near the LTM with thermal sputtering dominating over evaporation. However, spectroscopic measurements revealed an order of magnitude higher erosion. Since this remained constant when the OSP was held on the LTM so that the surface temperature increased, evaporation could be excluded as the main source of Sn erosion. Comparison between discharges with different durations of OSP location on the LTM revealed an increase in core radiation up to 1.5MW due to Sn. The 1.5D-impurity transport code STRAHL was used to interpret this increase in total plasma radiation and revealed a Sn concentration in the main plasma of up to 1.4×10-4. Given that the LTM only covered about 1/650 of the outer divertor circumference, extrapolating to a full toroidal divertor implies erosion is above acceptable limits. The unexpectedly high Sn fraction in the main plasma is attributed to the ejection of Sn droplets reaching the main plasma, which may have originated from either the CPS or leaked tin. This conclusion is also supported by splashes of tin droplets, which were observed on the adjacent divertor tile and one ∼0.5m downstream. Therefore, to make a Sn-filled LMD a viable alternative to solid tungsten, the formation of droplets must be reduced by two orders of magnitude.

To achieve their goals, future thermonuclear reactors such as ITER and DEMO are expected to operate plasmas with a high magnetic field, triangularity and confinement. To address the corresponding challenges, the concept of the high-field ( $B_{\textrm{T}} \unicode{x2A7D}$ 5 T), high-current ( $I_{\textrm{P}} \unicode{x2A7D}$ 2 MA) COMPASS Upgrade tokamak was established, and the device is currently being constructed in Prague, Czech Republic. This contribution provides an overview of the priority physics topics for the future physics programme of COMPASS Upgrade, namely: (i) characterisation of alternative confinement modes, (ii) a power exhaust including liquid metals, (iii) operation with a hot first wall and (iv) the influence of plasma shape on pedestal stability and confinement. The main scenarios are presented, as predicted by METIS and FIESTA codes. Pedestal pressure and density are estimated using EPED, multi-machine semi-empirical scaling and a neutral penetration model. Access to detachment is estimated using a detachment qualifier.

The liquid metal divertor (LMD) concept offers a promising solution to manage extreme heat loads in plasma devices. This study presents predictive simulations using the HeatLMD model for the COMPASS-U tokamak with a full toroidal liquid metal divertor, expected to achieve reactor-relevant divertor heat flux densities. We derive the scaling of the Li|Sn outflux over 7 assumed independent parameters, transferable to other tokamaks. Its transport to LCFS (via ERO2.0) and its radiation (via Aurora and FACIT) predicts acceptably low lithium concentration and negligible plasma cooling. However, for tin, the medium power scenario requires backside cooling beyond the capability of the ITER-like water-cooled divertor, though a temporary heat absorber can approximate this for a 1 s plasma pulse. For incident divertor power exceeding 2 MW and strike point T _e < 10 eV, HeatLMD predicts significant tin plasma radiative disruption.

Two small liquid metal targets based on the capillary porous structure were exposed to the divertor plasma of the tokamak COMPASS. The first target was wetted by pure lithium and the second one by a lithium-tin alloy, both releasing mainly lithium atoms (sputtering and evaporation) when exposed to plasma. Due to poorly conductive target material and steep surface inclination (implying the surface-perpendicular plasma heat flux 12–17 MW/m2) for 0.1–0.2 s, the LiSn target has reached 900 °C under ELMy H-mode. A model of heat conduction is developed and serves to evaluate the lithium sputtering and evaporation and, thus, the surface cooling by the released lithium and consequent radiative shielding. In these conditions, cooling of the surface by the latent heat of vapor did not exceed 1 MW/m2. About 1019 lithium atoms were evaporated (comparable to the COMPASS 1 m3 plasma deuterium content), local Li pressure exceeded the deuterium plasma pressure. Since the radiating Li vapor cloud spreads over a sphere much larger than the hot spot, its cooling effect is negligible (0.2 MW/m2). We also predict zero lithium prompt redeposition, consistent with our observation.

Power handling experiments with a special liquid metal divertor module based on the capillary porous system technology were performed in the tokamak COMPASS. The performance of two metals (Li and LiSn alloy) were tested for the first time in a divertor under ELMy H-mode conditions. No damage of the capillary mesh and a good exhaust capability were observed for both metals in two separate experiments with up to 12 MW/m2 of deposited perpendicular, inter-ELM steady-state heat flux and with ELMs of relative energy ~3% and a local peak energy fluence at the module ~15 kJ.m−2. No droplets were directly ejected from the mesh top surface and for the LiSn experiment, no contamination of the core and SOL plasmas by Sn was observed. The elemental depth profile analysis of 14 stainless-steel samples located around the vacuum vessel for each experiment provides information about the migration of evaporated/redeposited liquid elements.
