1. MmpA, a Conserved Membrane Protein Required for Efficient Surface Transport of Trehalose Lipids in Corynebacterineae

Abstract: Cell walls of bacteria of the genera Mycobacterium and Corynebacterium contain high levels of (coryno)mycolic acids. These very long chain fatty acids are synthesized on the cytoplasmic leaflet of the inner membrane (IM) prior to conjugation to the disaccharide, trehalose, and transport to the periplasm. Recent studies on Corynebacterium glutamicum have shown that acetylation of trehalose monohydroxycorynomycolate (hTMCM) promotes its transport across the inner membrane. Acetylation is mediated by the membrane acetyltransferase, TmaT, and is dependent on the presence of a putative methyltransferase, MtrP. Here, we identify a third protein that is required for the acetylation and membrane transport of hTMCM. Deletion of the C. glutamicum gene NCgl2761 (Rv0226c in Mycobacterium tuberculosis) abolished synthesis of acetylated hTMCM (AcTMCM), resulting in an accumulation of hTMCM in the inner membrane and reduced synthesis of trehalose dihydroxycorynomycolate (h2TDCM), a major outer membrane glycolipid. Complementation with the NCgl2761 gene, designated here as mmpA, restored the hTMCM:h2TDCM ratio. Comprehensive lipidomic analysis of the ΔtmaT, ΔmtrP and ΔmmpA mutants revealed strikingly similar global changes in overall membrane lipid composition. Our findings suggest that the acetylation and membrane transport of hTMCM is regulated by multiple proteins: MmpA, MtrP and TmaT, and that defects in this process lead to global, potentially compensatory changes in the composition of inner and outer membranes.

3. Feasibility and diagnostic utility of antigen-specific interferon-gamma responses for rapid immunodiagnosis of tuberculosis using induced sputum.

Abstract: The diagnosis of smear-negative or sputum-scarce tuberculosis (TB) is problematic as culture takes several weeks and representative biological samples are difficult to obtain. RD-1 antigen-specific interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) are sensitive and specific blood-based tests for the diagnosis of M. tuberculosis infection. The feasibility and diagnostic utility of this rapid immunodiagnostic assay, using cells from induced sputum, is unknown.Cells isolated from induced sputum were co-cultured with ESAT-6 and CFP-10 antigens using a standardized enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assay (T-SPOT.TB) in 101 consecutively recruited TB suspects or non-TB controls. An optimization phase using 28 samples was followed by a validation phase using samples from 73 participants (20 with definite or probable TB, and 48 with non-TB). Despite optimization of sputum processing 65/73 (89%) of the IGRAs in the validation phase were inconclusive. 44/73 (60%) tests failed due to sputum induction-related factors [sputum induction-related adverse events (n = 5), inadequate sputum volume (n = 8), non-homogenisable sputum (n = 7), and insufficient numbers of cells to perform the assay (n = 24)], whilst 20/73 (27%) tests failed due T-SPOT.TB assay-related factors [excessive debris precluding reading of spots in the ELISPOT well (n = 6), failure of the positive control (n = 11), or high spot count in the negative control (n = 3)]. Only 8/73 (11%) of the available samples could therefore be correctly categorized (7 definite or probable TB, and 1 non-TB patient). Thus, 13/20 (65%) of the definite or probable TB cases remained undiagnosed.Rapid immunodiagnosis of pulmonary TB by antigen-specific IFN-gamma ELISPOT responses, using cells from induced sputum, is possible. However, the test, in its current ELISPOT format, is not clinically useful because the majority of the assays are inconclusive.

Abstract: Aims Between 2012 and 2014 the number of patients treated in the UK with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) techniques increased significantly. One reason for this was the radiotherapy innovation fund for the centres in England. Before the announcement of the fund, a survey of radiotherapy centres was carried out in 2012 which collected data on IMRT uptake, obstacles to implementation, equipment used, delivery techniques and verification methods. A repeat survey was carried out in 2014 to identify key changes to IMRT quality assurance and verification practices. Materials and methods An online questionnaire was sent out to all 65 UK radiotherapy centres in the summer of 2012 and again in the summer of 2014. Questions covered background and equipment, machine tolerance and quality assurance, machine-based verification, software-based verification and future plans. Results There have been significant changes in the delivery techniques used for IMRT, with more than twice as many centres reporting the use of volumetric-modulated arc therapy techniques in 2014 compared with 2012. This has been combined with an increase in Monte Carlo-based algorithms in treatment planning systems. In 2012 all centres reported the need to carry out machine-based measurements for IMRT plan verification, dropping to 93% in 2014. Nineteen per cent of centres now report making only one measurement per month for prostate plans and 8% of breast plans never have physical measurements. Most centres use detector arrays for quality assurance measurement (86% in 2012 and 91% in 2014), but a significant number still use film and/or ionisation chambers (51% and 41%). In the analysis of these measurements there has been an increase in the use of tighter criteria. There has been a significant increase in the use of software for verification from 63% in 2012 to 95% in 2014. All centres reported that they needed further resources in order to efficiently achieve the quality assurance required for the number of patients planned to be treated in their centre. Conclusions The increased numbers of patients being treated with IMRT has meant that there have been significant changes in the way that quality assurance is carried out. These have been mainly in the reduction of measurements and the increase in software-based verification. However, quality assurance is still a significant burden and still has an effect on the numbers of patients who can be treated with IMRT.

Abstract: Aims Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) can be divided into favourable and poor prognostic groups by association with human papilloma virus (HPV) and smoking. This study prospectively investigated a dose-intensified schedule in poor/intermediate prognosis OPSCC. Materials and methods Patients with p16/HPV-negative or p16-positive N2b OPSCC with a greater than 10 pack-year smoking history were eligible. Patients were planned to receive 64 Gy in 25 fractions with cisplatin. The primary end point was absence of grade 3 mucositis at 3 months. Results Fifteen patients were recruited over 14 months. All patients completed a minimum of 2 years of follow-up. All patients completed full-dose radiotherapy within a median treatment time of 32 days (31–35). Grade 3 mucositis was absent in all patients at 3 months. There was one grade 4 toxicity event due to cisplatin (hypokalaemia). Complete response rates at 3 months were 100% and 93% for local disease and lymph nodes, respectively. One patient developed metastatic disease and subsequently died. Overall survival at 2 years was 93% (95% confidence interval 61–99%). Conclusions The schedule of 64 Gy in 25 fractions with concomitant chemotherapy is tolerable in patients with poor and intermediate prognosis OPSCC.

Abstract: Mycobacterium tuberculosis and related Corynebacterineae synthesize a family of lipomannans (LM) and lipoarabinomannans (LAM) that are abundant components of the multilaminate cell wall and essential virulence factors in pathogenic species. Here we describe a new membrane protein, highly conserved in all Corynebacterineae, that is required for synthesis of full-length LM and LAM. Deletion of the Corynebacterium glutamicum NCgl2760 gene resulted in a complete loss of mature LM/LAM and the appearance of a truncated LM (t-LM). Complementation of the mutant with the NCgl2760 gene fully restored LM/LAM synthesis. Structural studies, including monosaccharide analysis, methylation linkage analysis, and mass spectrometry of native LM species, indicated that the ΔNCgl2760 t-LM comprised a series of short LM species (8–27 residues long) containing an α1–6-linked mannose backbone with greatly reduced α1–2-mannose side chains and no arabinose caps. The structure of the ΔNCgl2760 t-LM was similar to that of the t-LM produced by a C. glutamicum mutant lacking the mptA gene, encoding a membrane α1–6-mannosyltransferase involved in extending the α1–6-mannan backbone of LM intermediates. Interestingly, NCgl2760 lacks any motifs or homology to other proteins of known function. Attempts to delete the NCgl2760 orthologue in Mycobacterium smegmatis were unsuccessful, consistent with previous studies indicating that the M. tuberculosis orthologue, Rv0227c, is an essential gene. Together, these data suggest that NCgl2760/Rv0227c plays a critical role in the elongation of the mannan backbone of mycobacterial and corynebacterial LM, further highlighting the complexity of lipoglycan pathways of Corynebacterineae.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE Early studies in Cape Town identified independent HIV-1 epidemics, with distinct viral subtypes, among men who have sex with men (MSM) and the heterosexual population. However, few recent HIV-1 subtype data are available for MSM in South Africa. We examined HIV-1 subtypes among MSM in Cape Town. DESIGN Cross-sectional survey. METHODS Self-identified MSM were recruited from geographically and racially disparate communities across Cape Town. Participants completed behavioral questionnaires and underwent HIV testing. Virus isolated from infected participants underwent complete env gp160 sequencing, and HIV-1 subtypes were assigned through phylogenetic analysis. RESULTS In total, 194 HIV-infected MSM were enrolled: 67% black African, 24% colored, and 9% white men. More black African men identified as bisexual or heterosexual compared with other races. Overall, 31%-66% of men reported a recent partner of another race. HIV-1 subtypes were confirmed for 143 participants: 81% were subtype C, 14% B, 1% A1, 1% F2, and 3 recombinant viruses. Subtype C virus was associated with black African race (P = 0.003 compared with colored; P < 0.001 compared with white), men who identified as bisexual/heterosexual (P = 0.01), and reported a female sexual partner in the last year (P = 0.02). Compared with previous studies, an increasing prevalence of subtype C virus was noted among white MSM. CONCLUSIONS This molecular epidemiology study provides novel evidence of sexual network links between the heterosexual and MSM epidemics and between historically racially disparate communities. These findings provide insights into the drivers of HIV epidemics in different population groups and may have implications for prevention strategies.

Abstract: D∗± production via e+e−→D∗±X has been measured at an average CM energy of 34.4 GeV. The D∗± energy spectrum is hard, with a maximum near χ = 0.6. The size of the D∗ cross section, R D ∗ = σ( e + e − → D ∗ X ) σ μμ = 2.50 ± 0.64 ± 0.88 (assuming R D ∗0 = R D ∗+ ) indicates that a large fraction of charm quark production yields D∗ mesons. The D∗± angular distribution exhibits a forward—backward asymmetry, A = −0.28 ± 0.13. This is consistent with that expected in the standard theory for weak neutral currents and leads to |gAc| = 0.89 ± 0.44 for the axial vector coupling of the charm quark.

Abstract: We present an analysis of electroweak leptonic couplings from high statistics experiments on Bhabha scattering and μ pair production at an energy of 34.5 GeV. The forward-backward charge asymmetry of the μ pairs was measured to be −0.098±0.023±0.005. The data were found to agree well with the standard theory of electroweak interaction giving sin2θW=0.27±0.07. The leptonic weak couplings were determined to begv=0.000±0.170 andgA=−0.481±0.055. The data were also used to investigate a class of composite models for leptons.

Abstract: The full TASSO data have been used to study the inclusive production of strange mesons in e+e- annihilations. Differential and total cross sections have been measured in the centre of mass energy range 14 to 44 GeV for K0, {Mathematical expression} and 34.5 to 44 GeV for K*± (892). We have investigated the strange meson production properties in jets by studying the rapidity and pt2 distributions as well as the evolution of the multiplicities as a function of the event sphericity. We find no evidence that the strange meson yields increase with increasing sphericity faster than the total charged multiplicity. © 1990 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: We present an analysis of ρ0ρ0 production by two photons in the ρ0ρ0 invariant mass range from 1.2 to 2.0 GeV. From a study of the angular correlations in the process γγ→ρ0ρ0→π- π+π- we exclude a dominant contribution from JP=0- or 2- states. The data indicate sizeable contributions from JP=0+ for four pion masses M4π1.7 GeV. The data are also well described by a model with isotropic production and uncorrelated isotropic decay of the ρ0,s. The cross section stays high below the nominal ρ0ρ0 threshold, i.e. M4π

Abstract: Inclusive charged particle production ine + e − annihilation into hadrons is studied in terms of the particle fractional momentumx p . Thex p distribution for gluon jets is extracted by comparing two data samples measured in the TASSO detector: nearly symmetric three jet events at centre-of-mass energyW∼35 GeV and two jet events atW∼22 GeV, yielding quark and gluon jets of similar energies (∼11.5 GeV). No significant difference is observed between quark and gluon jets. Monte Carlo models based on parton showers describe the trend and energy variation of the data better than a model with second order matrix element in α s .

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To examine whether a lipoarabinomannan (LAM) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) that offers diagnostic utility using urine in patients with tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection can be used in induced sputum to diagnose sputum-scarce patients with suspected TB. DESIGN: LAM was measured in induced sputum samples obtained from 61 consecutively recruited sputum-scarce TB suspects in a tertiary hospital respiratory clinic in South Africa. Liquid culture positivity for Mycobacterium tuberculosis was used as the reference standard. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to assess alternative LAM concentration cut-offs. RESULTS: A total of 87% (53/61) of study patients had a valid M. tuberculosis culture result; 49% (23/53) were HIV-infected and 17% (9/53) were culture-positive for M. tuberculosis. Induced sputum smear microscopy and LAM ELISA had an overall sensitivity of 56% (95%CI 27-81); however the specificity of LAM ELISA was 48% (95%CI 34-62) while the positive and negative predictive values were respectively 18% (95%CI 8-36) and 84% (95%CI 65-94). An optimal rule-in cut-off selected by receiver operating characteristic (LAM concentration >5.73 ng/ml) increased test specificity to 98% and reduced sensitivity to 22%. Normalisation of the assay for sample total protein or cell count did not improve diagnostic accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: In this proof-of-concept study the ELISA was not clinically useful for TB diagnosis using induced sputum.

Abstract: The tuberculin skin test (TST) is a model of integrated innate and adaptive human immune responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but the component processes that are involved in this model have not previously been defined in vivo. We used transcriptional profiling to study these responses within the TST at molecular and system levels. Skin biopsies from TST injection sites were examined in subjects classified as TST(+) or TST(-) by clinical and histological criteria. Genome-wide expression arrays showed evolution of immune responses reflecting T-cell activation and recruitment with uniquely Th1-polarized responses and cytotoxic T cells (CTLs). In addition, distinct innate immune and IFN-γ-stimulated gene expression signatures were identified, under the regulation of NF-κB and STAT1 transcriptional control. These were highly enriched for chemokines and MHC class II molecules providing a potential mechanism for paracrine amplification of inflammatory responses in the TST, by supporting cellular recruitment and enhancing antigen presentation. The same repertoire of innate and adaptive immune responses was evident in TST(+) and TST(-) subjects alike, clinically positive TSTs being distinguished only by quantitatively greater differences. These data provide new insights into complex multifaceted responses within the TST, with much greater sensitivity than previous clinical or histological assessments.

Abstract: Summary Background/objective Flexibility in sample processing may improve test utility of the quantitative antigen-specific T cell assay (T-SPOT ® .TB). We investigated whether delayed sample processing with and without the use of T-Cell Xtend , a proprietary reagent, impacted upon test accuracy. Methods Blood samples obtained from 363 sequentially recruited tuberculosis suspects or treated patients were processed immediately (day 0) and at different times after receipt of the sample [∼24-h (day 1) or ∼32-h (day 2)] with and without adding T-Cell Xtend . Results T-Cell- Xtend -independent median ELISPOT counts (spot forming cells per million peripheral blood mononuclear cells) were significantly higher at day 1 versus day 0 (114 vs. 100; n =66; p =0.03); inter-time-point agreement between the results was 95.45% and the conversion/reversion rate was 4.55%. By contrast, counts on day 0 without T-Cell Xtend versus day 1 with T-Cell Xtend were similar (56 vs. 56; n =215), inter-time-point agreement between the results was 97.17%, and the conversion/reversion rate was 2.83%. Counts performed at day 2 with T-Cell Xtend were not significantly different from day 0. These findings were independent of HIV status. Conclusion There was high agreement between results when samples were processed immediately and after a 24-h delay. However, although the use of T-Cell Xtend appeared to reduce the number of conversions/reversions this reduction was not statistically significant. Larger studies are required to clarify these findings.

Abstract: Hypofractionated accelerated chemoradiotherapy in the conformal era achieved acceptable control rates for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. This study reports outcomes for biologically staged oropharyngeal cancer treated using four-week intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and synchronous chemotherapy. Between 2009–2012, patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx treated with hypofractionated chemo-IMRT (55Gray in 20 fractions), with either carboplatin or cetuximab were prospectively identified. Outcome measures analysed were 2-year loco-regional recurrence-free survival (LR-RFS) and overall survival (OS). Eighty-five consecutive patients with oropharyngeal cancer (p16 positive never smoked n=17; p16 positive ever smoked n=42; p16 negative n=24; unknown n=2)) were treated with IMRT with carboplatin (n=69) or cetuximab (n=16), with median follow up in surviving patients of 26 months. Two year LR-RFS was 68% for the whole cohort (95% confidence intervals 58%-78%), 87% (58%–97%) for the p16 positive never-smokers, 75% (58%–86%) for the p16 positive ever-smokers and 45% (25%–63%) for the p16 negative patients. OS at 24 months for these groups respectively was 80% (69–87%), 100.0%, 90% (75%–96%) and 46.9% (25%–66%). Abstract: A small electromagnetic sampling calorimeter, installed in the ZEUS experiment in 1995, significantly enhanced the acceptance for very low x and low Q 2 inelastic neutral current scattering, e+p → e+X, at HERA. A measurement of the proton structure function F2 and the total virtual photon-proton ( γ ∗ p ) cross-section is presented for 0.11 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 0.65 GeV2 and 2 × 10−6 ≤ x ≤ 6 × 10−5, corresponding to a range in the γ ∗ p c.m. energy of 100 ≤ W ≤ 230 GeV. Comparisons with various models are also presented.

Abstract: Deep inelastic charged-current reactions have been studied ine+p ande−p collisions at a center of mass energy of about 300GeV in the kinematic regionQ2>200GeV2 andx>0.006 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The integrated cross sections forQ2>200GeV2 are found to be $\sigma _{e^ + p \to \bar \nu X} = 30.3_{ - 4.2 - 2.6}^{ + 5.5 + 1.6} pb$ and $\sigma _{e^ - p \to \nu X} = 54.7_{ - 9.8 - 3.4}^{ + 15.9 + 2.8} pb$. Differential cross sections have been measured as functions of the variablesx, y andQ2. From the measured differential cross sectionsdσ/dQ2, theW boson mass is determined to be $M_W = 79_{ - 7 - 4}^{ + 8 + 4} GeV$. Measured jet rates and transverse energy profiles agree with model predictions. A search for charged-current interactions with a large rapidity gap yielded one candidate event, corresponding to a cross section of $\sigma _{e^ + p \to \bar \nu X} (Q^2 > 200 GeV^2 ; \eta _{\max }< 2.5) = 0.8_{ - 0.7}^{ + 1.8} \pm 0.1 pb$

Abstract: We report on a measurement of the proton structure function F 2 in the range 3.5×10-5≤x≤4×10-3 and 1.5 GeV2≤Q 2≤15GeV2 at the ep collider HERA operating at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=300GeV. The rise of F 2 with decreasing x observed in the previous HERA measurements persists in this lower x and Q 2 range. The Q 2 evolution of F 2, even at the lowest Q 2 and x measured, is consistent with perturbative QCD. © 1996 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract: Deep inelastic $e~-p$ scattering has been studied in both the charged-current (CC) and neutral-current (NC) reactions at momentum transfers squared, $Q~2$, between 400 GeV$~2$ and the kinematic limit of 87500 GeV$~2$ using the ZEUS detector at the HERA $ep$ collider. The CC and NC total cross sections, the NC to CC cross section ratio, and the differential cross sections, $ d\sigma/dQ~2 $, are presented. For $Q~2 \simeq M_W~2$, where $M_W$ is the mass of the $W$ boson, the CC and NC cross sections have comparable magnitudes, demonstrating the equal strengths of the weak and electromagnetic interactions at high $Q~2$. The $Q~2$ dependence of the CC cross section determines the mass term in the CC propagator to be $M_{W} = 76 \pm 16 \pm 13$GeV.

Abstract: In thin-film silicon photovoltaic modules the laser scribing processes are optimised to achieve low-loss performance of the segment interconnections. The characterisation of the component scribes and the contribution of the interconnect structure to the initial, degraded and low illumination performance of the module are described. Scribing processes based on nanosecond (ns) pulse duration lasers that are irradiated from the substrate side have been studied. These through-theglass (TTG) processes use selective laser wavelengths for targeted removal of the different layers in the photovoltaic cell structure. It is shown that wide process windows exist for the three laser scribing processes in the interconnect structure, with well defined behaviour at the limits of each process. In a second part of this paper, initial studies have been made on scribing processes using lasers with picosecond (ps) pulse durations with irradiation from the deposition layer side of the module. This 'top-scribe' approach allows a single wavelength for all three scribing processes and the high power ps laser sources now available can support scribe processing speeds of up to 120 m/min. The interaction between the ps laser and processed layers is characterised to derive the process ablation fluences and initial scribe process window parameters.

In order to establish UK volume definition practice in oropharyngeal cancer, the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit distributed questionnaires to known UK head and neck oncologists in JuneeJuly 2010. Forty oncologists responded from 33 centres. Twenty-two of the 33 centres (27 of 40 oncologists) used intensity-modulated radiotherapy (22/ 33; 66.7%) of whom 19 (70.1%) used three dose levels and eight (29.6%) used two dose levels. The intensitymodulated radiotherapy high dose ranged from 65 to 70 Gy in 30e35 fractions; intermediate dose 54e63.7 Gy in 30e35 fractions; elective dose 44e56 Gy in 22e30 fractions. The growth of the high dose clinical target volume (CTV) from the GTV was as follows: anatomical alone: two oncologists (7.4%), geometric alone: seven (25.9%), combined anatomical and geometric: 18 (66.7%). The minimum margin used to construct the high dose CTV from the GTV ranged between 5 and 20 mm. The growth of the CTV from the GTV for the intermediate dose was as follows: anatomical alone: six (31.6%), geometric alone: two (10.5%), combined anatomical and geometric: nine (47.4%), information unavailable from two oncologists. The minimum geometric margin varied between 0 and 15 mm. This survey illustrates the variability in UK contouring strategies for oropharyngeal carcinoma, with most responding clinicians using combined anatomical and geometric growth and a three dose level technique. This technique relies on the hypothesis that only the GTV requires a radical dose and surrounding tissues can be adequately treated with an intermediate ‘microscopic’ dose. However, there are no prospective studies with long-term follow-up to validate the safety of this approach.

Abstract: We report the full reconstruction of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ mesons through the decay chain ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi} \ensuremath{\gamma}, J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, using data obtained at the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}p collisions at \ensuremath{\surd}s =1.8 TeV. This exclusive ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ sample is used to measure the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$-meson production cross section times branching fractions. We obtain \ensuremath{\sigma}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}B=3.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4(stat${)}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1.1}^{+1.2}$(syst) nb for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}}$ mesons decaying to J/\ensuremath{\psi} with ${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{T}}$g6.0 GeV/c and pseudorapidity \ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\Vert}0.5. From this and the inclusive J/\ensuremath{\psi} cross section we calculate the inclusive b-quark cross section to be 12.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4.5 \ensuremath{\mu}b for ${\mathit{p}}_{\mathit{T}}^{\mathit{b}}$g8.5 GeV/c and \ensuremath{\Vert}${\mathit{y}}^{\mathit{b}}$\ensuremath{\Vert}1.

Abstract: We have searched for the $b$-flavored baryon decay ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0}$ in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). In the $\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0}$ invariant-mass distribution we observe a flat distribution and a small number of events, consistent with no signal. Using the $b$-quark cross section measured by the CDF we put an upper limit on the $b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}$ production fraction times the branching ratio $F({\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b})B({\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{b}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\frac{J}{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{0})$ of 0.50\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We present limits on the WIMP-nucleon cross section for inelastic dark matter derived from the 2008 run of ZEPLIN-III. Cuts, notably on scintillation pulse shape and scintillation-to-ionisation ratio, give a net exposure of 63 kg.days in the range 20-80keV nuclear recoil energy, in which 6 events are observed. Upper limits on signal rate are derived from the maximum empty patch in the data. Under standard halo assumptions a small region of parameter space consistent, at 99% CL, with causing the 1.17 ton.year DAMA modulation signal is allowed at 90% CL: it is in the mass range 45-60 GeV with a minimum CL of 88%, again derived from the maximum patch. This is the tightest constraint on that explanation of the DAMA result yet presented using a xenon target., 4 pages, 5 figures. Updated with 1.17 ton.year DAMA results.

Abstract: Inclusive [ital J]/[psi] and [psi](2[ital S]) production has been studied in [ital [bar p]p] collisions at [radical][ital s] =1.8 TeV using 2.6[plus minus]0.2 pb[sup [minus]1] of data taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The products of production cross section times branching fraction were measured as functions of [ital P][sub [ital T]] for [ital J]/[psi][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] and [psi](2[ital S])[r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]. In the kinematic range [ital P][sub [ital T]][gt]6 GeV/[ital c] and [vert bar][eta][vert bar][le]0.5 we get [sigma]([ital [bar p]p][r arrow][ital J]/[psi] [ital X])[ital B]([ital J]/[psi][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]) =6.88[plus minus]0.23(stat)[sub [minus]1.08][sup +0.93](syst) nb, and [sigma]([ital [bar p]p][r arrow][psi](2[ital S])[ital X])[ital B]([psi](2[ital S])[r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]) =0.232[plus minus]0.051(stat)[sub [minus]0.032][sup +0.029](syst)nb. From these values we calculate the inclusive [ital b]-quark production cross section.

Abstract: We search for the rare decay ${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ in 4.2 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of pp\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. At the 95% confidence level, we find an upper limit on the partial decay width to be \ensuremath{\Gamma}(${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$)/\ensuremath{\Gamma}(${\mathit{W}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{e}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$\ensuremath{\nu})\ensuremath{\le}7.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}3}$.

Abstract: We present results of searches for the top quark in {ital p{bar p}} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV. The data sample was collected during 1988--1989 at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and has an integrated luminosity of 4.1 pb{sup {minus}1}. We have extended our previous search for {ital e}{mu} final states to include the {ital ee} and {mu}{mu} channels. In addition, we have searched for a low-transverse-momentum muon as a tag of the bottom quark in top decay events with a lepton and at least two jets. We obtain a lower limit on the top-quark mass of 91 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} at the 95% confidence level assuming standard-model charged-current decays.

Abstract: We present new experimental constraints on the WIMP-nucleon spin-dependent elastic cross-sections using data from the first science run of ZEPLIN-III, a two-phase xenon experiment searching for galactic dark matter WIMPs based at the Boulby mine. Analysis of $\sim$450 kg$\cdot$days fiducial exposure revealed a most likely signal of zero events, leading to a 90%-confidence upper limit on the pure WIMP-neutron cross-section of $\sigma_n=1.8\times 10^{-2}$ pb at 55 GeV/$c^2$ WIMP mass. Recent calculations of the nuclear spin structure based on the Bonn CD nucleon-nucleon potential were used for the odd-neutron isotopes $^{129}$Xe and $^{131}$Xe. These indicate that the sensitivity of xenon targets to the spin-dependent WIMP-proton interaction is much lower than implied by previous calculations, whereas the WIMP-neutron sensitivity is impaired only by a factor of $\sim$2., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Following the first 31‐day underground run in Boulby Mine, UK, the collaboration published dark matter limits in January 2007; the first such limits using two‐phase xenon technology. We outline the key detector design, performance and results here.

Abstract: The ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$ B\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} $^{0}$ average mixing parameter \ensuremath{\chi} has been extracted from e\ensuremath{\mu} and ee events produced in pp\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} collisions at \ensuremath{\surd}s =1.8 TeV. In a sample of 900 e\ensuremath{\mu} events, the like-sign to opposite-sign charge ratio R is measured to be 0.556\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.048(stat${)}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}0.042}^{+0.035}$(syst). In the absence of mixing, the expected value of R would be 0.23\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06. The corresponding number for 212 ee events is 0.573\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.116(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.047(syst) with an expected nonmixing value of 0.24\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07. The observed excess in R leads to a combined determination of \ensuremath{\chi}=0.176\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.031(stat+syst) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.032 (model), where the last uncertainty is due to Monte Carlo modeling.

Abstract: The {ital W}{prime} is a charged, heavy, vector boson predicted to exist by some extensions of the standard model. We have searched for the processes {ital W}{prime}{r arrow}{ital e}{nu} and {ital W}{prime}{r arrow}{mu}{nu} for {ital M}{sub {ital W}{prime}}{gt}100 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}, in {ital {bar p}p} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV, using data taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The nonobservation of these processes leads to a lower limit of 520 Gev/{ital c}{sup 2} (95% confidence level) on the mass of the {ital W}{prime}, assuming standard-strength couplings to three fermion generations.

Abstract: Using the Collider Detector at Fermilab, the {ital W}-boson differential cross section {ital d}{sigma}/{ital dP}{sub {ital T}} is measured using {ital W}{r arrow}{ital e}{nu} events in proton-antiproton collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV. A next-to-leading-order theoretical calculation agrees well with the data. The cross section ({sigma}) for {ital P}{sub {ital T}}{gt}50 GeV/{ital c} is measured to be 423{plus minus}58(stat){plus minus}108(syst) pb.

Abstract: The ZEPLIN-III experiment in the Palmer Underground Laboratory at Boulby uses a 12kg two-phase xenon time projection chamber to search for the weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) that may account for the dark matter of our Galaxy. The detector measures both scintillation and ionisation produced by radiation interacting in the liquid to differentiate between the nuclear recoils expected from WIMPs and the electron recoil background signals down to ~10keV nuclear recoil energy. An analysis of 847kg.days of data acquired between February 27th 2008 and May 20th 2008 has excluded a WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering spin-independent cross-section above 8.1x10(-8)pb at 55GeV/c2 with a 90% confidence limit. It has also demonstrated that the two-phase xenon technique is capable of better discrimination between electron and nuclear recoils at low-energy than previously achieved by other xenon-based experiments., 12 pages, 17 figures

Abstract: The forward-backward asymmetry in the reaction e+e-→bb has been determined at centre of mass energies near 35 GeV using the TASSO detector. We report results from three different methods. The combined result of the measurements is$\overline A _b = - 0.21 \pm 0.08$ ignoring$B^0 \bar B^0 $ mixing. Taking mixing into account leads to a corrected asymmetry of$\overline {A_b^{cor} } = - 0.28 \pm 0.11$. The axial vector coupling constant of theb quark as calculated from the corrected asymmetry isab=−1.2±0.5 to be compared with the valueabSM=−1 from the standard model.

Abstract: The full TASSO data have been used to study the orientation of three-jet events ine+e− annihilation. The polar angle distributions of the normal to the three-jet plane as well as the polar angle distribution of the most energetic jet have been measured as a function of the thrust cut-off used to select the three-jet sample. The data corrected for radiation and detector effects are compared to QCD predictions and fair agreement is found. As a consistency check we also present measurements of the azimuthal correlations between the lepton and hadron planes. A significant azimuthal dependence is found, consistent again with the QCD predictions.

Abstract: A search for the top quark in {ital {bar p}p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using the Collider Detector at Fermilab is described. A study of events selected by requiring an energetic electron, missing transverse energy, and two or more jets excludes at 95% confidence level the standard-model production and decay of {ital t{bar t}} pairs if the top-quark mass is between 40 and 77 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}. The observed electron + multijet data are consistent with {ital W}-boson production.
