1. Effects of service-learning as opposed to traditional teaching-learning contexts: a pilot study with three different courses

Abstract

IntroductionService-Learning (SL) is an innovative teaching-learning proposal with an increasingly wide application in higher education. Previous studies show its potential to generate positive personal, academic, social and citizenship outcomes among students who participate in it. But studies that help understand in depth its real impact, particularly in comparison with more traditional teaching-learning contexts, are still scarce. MethodThis study explores the effects of Service-Learning on 122 university students, who were attending Psychology (n = 80), Social Work (SW; n = 19) and Applied Foreign Languages (AFL; n = 23) degree courses. These participants were organized into service-learning and traditional teaching-learning groups and assessed on expectations and impact of the service-experience, development of social and civic skills, and life goals.ResultsResults show significant differences between pre- and post-tests in life goals, namely an increase in hedonistic and wellbeing goals for Psychology students, political, hedonistic, religious, personal development, and wellbeing goals for SW students, and social and wellbeing goals for AFL students. Students in Psychology and AFL increased their expectations with the service and students in the AFL developed more pro-social behaviors.DiscussionThese results are encouraging for the expansion of this transformative teaching-learning practice to courses of different scientific areas, although with some specificities, with the purpose of contributing to a more responsible, critical and participatory society in the creation of the common good.

Abstract

Abstract Background Treatment of open angle glaucoma (OAG) and/or ocular hypertension (OHT) focuses on achievement of target intraocular pressure (IOP), with the objective of slowing disease progression. However, ocular surface health is an important consideration in the optimization of treatment. We report 6 patient cases in which enhanced IOP control was achieved following appropriate management of ocular surface inflammation and a therapeutic switch to the preservative-free (PF) tafluprost (0.0015%)/timolol (0.5%) fixed-dose combination (FC). Case presentation Six patient cases, aged 48–74 years, presented with OAG or OHT. Each patient had signs and symptoms of ocular surface disease (OSD). Cases 1–3 were each receiving maximal medical therapy for OAG; regimens comprising prostaglandin analogue (PGA), β-blocker, carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (CAI) and α-2 agonist agents (including treatments containing preservative agent). Cases 1 and 2 reported IOP values ≥23 mmHg in each eye, and wide IOP fluctuations were identified when reviewing patient data concerning case 3 (11–20 mmHg). Maximal therapy was ceased and PF tafluprost/timolol FC was initiated, after which the signs and symptoms of OSD were improved and IOP was reduced (≤18 mmHg for cases 1–3) and stabilized. Cases 4 and 5 were diagnosed with OAG and case 6 had OHT. Each had symptoms and signs of OSD and were treated with a preserved PGA monotherapy (latanoprost 0.005% or bimatoprost 0.03%). At presentation, IOP was 24 mmHg in both eyes (case 4), ≥18 mmHg (case 5) and ≥ 22 mmHg (case 6). Following a switch to the PF tafluprost/timolol FC, OSD symptoms were improved and IOP was 14 mmHg (both eyes; case 4), ≤14 mmHg (case 5) and 16 mmHg (both eyes; case 6). Conclusions In addition to IOP-lowering efficacy, approaches to the management of OAG and OHT should consider the impact of treatment tolerability and the susceptibility of these patients to OSD. The presence of ocular surface inflammation appears to be detrimental to adherence and therefore to the effectiveness of topical medications. Addressing OSD through the use of PF FC formations, such as the PF tafluprost/timolol FC, reduces exposure to potentially toxic agents and facilitates improvements in IOP control.

4. Confined Charged Particles in C-periodic Volumes

Abstract

Charged particles in an Abelian Coulomb phase are non-local infraparticles that are surrounded by a cloud of soft photons which extends to infinity. Gauss' law prevents the existence of charged particles in a periodic volume. In a $C$-periodic volume, which is periodic up to charge conjugation, on the other hand, charged particles can exist. This includes vortices in the $3$-d XY-model, magnetic monopoles in $4$-d $\mathrm{U}(1)$ gauge theory, as well as protons and other charged particles in QCD coupled to QED. In four dimensions non-Abelian charges are confined. Hence, in an infinite volume non-Abelian infraparticles cost an infinite amount of energy. However, in a $C$-periodic volume non-Abelian infraparticles (whose energy increases linearly with the box size) can indeed exist. 5. Phase diagram and non-Abelian symmetry locking for fermionic mixtures with unequal interactions

Abstract

The occurrence of non-Abelian symmetry-locked states in ultracold fermionic mixtures with four components is investigated. We study the phase diagram in the presence of an attractive interaction between the species of two pairs of the mixture, and general (also repulsive) interactions between the species of each pair. This system is physically realized, e.g., in mixtures of two different earth-alkaline species, both of them with two hyperfine levels selectively populated. We find an extended region of the diagram exhibiting a two-flavors superfluid symmetry-locking (TSFL) phase. This phase is present also for not too large repulsive intra-pair interactions and it is characterized by a global non-Abelian symmetry group obtained by locking together two independent invariance groups of the corresponding normal state. Explicit estimates are reported for the mixture of the fermionic isotopes $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$-$^{173}\mathrm{Yb}$, indicating that the TFSL phase can be achieved also without tuning the interactions between $\mathrm{Yb}$ atoms.

Abstract

Fuel cell is considered an energetic solution of low environmental impact which large-scale commercialization is hindered by the expensive Pt-based cathodic electrocatalyst. Therefore, its replacement by an active less-expensive metal-free electrocatalyst such as nitrogen-doped graphene (N-graphene) is desirable. To investigate nitrogen-doping influence on graphene’s activity in alkaline oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), we prepared N-graphene through thermal treatment of graphene and urea at 800 °C for 30 min. N-graphene exhibited higher onset potential, half-wave potential, diffusion-limited current density and kinetic current density in ORR (0.78 V vs RHE, 0.63 V vs RHE, -3.36 mA cm-2, -3.00 mA cm-2, respectively) than undoped graphene (0.73 V vs RHE, 0.62 V vs RHE, -2.80 mA cm-2, -2.23 mA cm-2, respectively), which may be attributed to nitrogen-doping, edges and defect sites in N-graphene, as revealed by elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy results. This activity improvement also affected ORR’s selectivity and rate-determining step.

10. Chyloperitoneum due to gastric carcinoma: a case report

Abstract

Chyloperitoneum is a rare manifestation of gastric carcinoma, generally occurring late in the course of the disease with a poor prognosis. We report an unusual case of chyloperitoneum in a patient with gastric carcinoma. A 61-year-old male patient presented with postprandial fullness, nausea and weight loss. The upper gastrointestinal endoscopy demonstrated a stenosing lesion of the esophagogastric junction. A biopsy was made and revealed a signet-ring cell gastric adenocarcinoma. The staging CT scan showed multiple abdominal lymphadenopathies and mild ascites. The patient underwent a staging laparoscopy that revealed a large carcinoma of the gastric cardia and a milky-appearing peritoneal fluid. A peritoneal washing and abdominal drainage were performed. The fluid analysis showed a high concentration of triglycerides, compatible with a chyloperitoneum. The patient started medium chain triglycerides-based diet with good response. This case report emphasizes that chyloperitoneum should be considered when assessing patients with gastric carcinoma.

11. Kuhn, Condorcet, and Comte: On the Justification of the 'Old' Historiography of Science

Abstract

Despite the importance of the “historiographical revolution” in Kuhn’s work, he did not carry out a specific study about it. Without a systematic investigation into it, he even affirms that the “old” historiography of science (OHS) is unhistorical, suggesting its summary disqualification in the face of his “new historiography” of science (NHS). My wider project, of which this paper is a part, is to better discuss the issue of the justification of the NHS. In this paper, I discuss the justification (and the genesis) of the OHS, focusing on Condorcet and Comte and resorting especially to Koyré. This will allow us to understand that the relation between the OHS and the NHS is a new instance of inter-theoretical incommensurability. And, indeed, that the NHS is not stricto senso a new historiography. It is the same historiography used for other disciplines (art, philosophy), which in the twentieth century begins to be applied to science as well.

Abstract

The first manuscript of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, probably written in late 1958, is available in the Kuhn Archive at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)1. It is the first version of Chapter 1, which is the introduction to the book, and is completely different from the version that was published. In this article, I turn to the manuscript to show that at that time Kuhn considered the comparison between the image of science and the image of art as the most appropriate way to announce his project: to change the image of science by bringing it closer to the image of art. As I try to demonstrate, this appeal to the history of art is not merely occasional. And it allows us to understand Kuhn’s intriguing retrospective statement, according to which Structure was a belated product of his discovery of the parallels between science and art. Some passages from Kuhn’s unpublished manuscript are transcribed in the article.

Abstract

The quality of water supplied to the human populations should be under continuous monitorization to detect possible threats to the consumer or infrastructure. The measurement of water's pH allows to conclude about water quality. Solar thermal energy harvesting and consequent conversion into electrical energy, after properly regulated, allows to power an intelligent sensor to measure the pH values of water. The adoption of the IEEE1451 standard allows the smart sensor, through the services provided by this standard, integrate a sensor network and cooperate with other elements of the network to maximize the functionality and overall efficiency of the water distribution system.

Abstract

The evolution of Information and Communication Technologies and the increasing smartness of instrumentation is leading the industrial sector to evolve and reach the 4th generation of the industry. The standardization will support the technological evolution leading the industry to the Factory of the Future. The IEEE 1451 family of standards was developed to enhance the implementation of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) able to communicate with the network, and so lead to the Internet of Things. In several phases of product development, the control and measurement tasks are needed and WSN can be implemented to reduce men hours and increase the accuracy of the measurements. In this context, this paper discusses a wireless sensor network in an automotive factory environment, and presents how the standard can be applied to the painting process. This is a work in progress, so in this paper is discussed the implementation of the family of standards and what are the advantages of using standardized sensor networks.

Abstract

With the demand for greener urban mobility solutions, cities are implementing bike-sharing systems to reduce the usage of combustion engine vehicles and, at same time, promote physical activities. This concept presents itself as a good scenario to the implementation of wireless sensors network on bicycles due to its features: mobile transducers, different sensors and data, and system architecture. This paper discusses the scenario of an e-bike sharing infrastructure that implements a network of transducers following the guidelines from IEEE 1451 standards, highlighting the implementation its details. The development of network compliant with this family of standards promotes the implementation of features such as interoperability, connectivity, scalability, and plug-and-play on new devices and systems.

30. Carnap, Kuhn, and the History of Science: A Reply to Thomas Uebel

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to respond to Thomas Uebel’s criticisms of my comments regarding the current revisionism of Carnap’s work and its relations to Kuhn. I begin by pointing out some misunderstandings in the interpretation of my article. I then discuss some aspects related to Carnap’s view of the history of science. First, I emphasize that it was not due to a supposed affinity between Kuhn’s conceptions and those of logical positivists that Kuhn was invited to write the monograph on the history of science for the Encyclopedia. Three other authors had been invited first, including George Sarton whose conception was entirely different from Kuhn’s. In addition, I try to show that Carnap attributes little importance to the history of science. He seldom refers to it and, when he does, he clearly defends (like Sarton) a Whig or an ‘old’ historiography of science, to which Kuhn opposes his “new historiography of science”. It is argued that this raises serious difficulties for those, like Uebel, who hold the view that Carnap includes the historical or the social within the rational.

Abstract

This may possibly be the first work on Kuhn and Sarton despite the importance of the subject, since Sarton was one of the main representatives of the “old” historiography of science, essential to understanding Kuhn’s critical proposal of a “new historiography of science” and the “historiographic revolution”. The theme has not been explored up until now by Kuhn scholars perhaps due to the vastness of Sarton’s work and the inadequate resource of merely citing excerpts out of context. Seeking to circumvent these problems, in a Koyrean way, we focus here on a case study. It is a peculiar case study and convenient for our purposes because, while it is of great importance for Sarton’s conception regarding the history of science and is in fact present throughout his academic career, it is not very extensive and can therefore be addressed in a more complete manner. We refer to Sarton’s treatment of Leonardo da Vinci and a discovery that he did not make: the discovery of blood circulation in the seventeenth century, attributed to William Harvey. Although Kuhn did not write about Leonardo or Harvey, we aim to show that he clearly positioned himself contrary to Sarton, albeit indirectly, with respect to this particular historical episode, as well.

Abstract

Despite its low NDF digestibility, sugarcane is an option for feeding dairy cattle in tropical regions. We evaluated the effect of sugarcane silages inoculated with CCMA 0170 (LH; an epiphytic bacteria isolated from sugarcane) or with NCIMB 40788 (LB; a commercial strain isolated from temperate grasses) on dairy cow performance and feeding behavior. The microbial inoculums were previously grown in the laboratory to obtain 5 log cfu/g of fresh forage. Nine tons of each inoculated silage and a noninoculated control silage (CON) were harvested from the same field and stored for at least 35 d in experimental 20 × 2.1 × 0.4 m bunker silos. Fifteen Holstein cows in late lactation (336 ± 175 days in milk at the start of the experiment) received the treatments in five 3 × 3 Latin squares with 21-d periods. The diets contained 20% of DM of sugarcane silage and 41% of DM of corn silage. Milk yield was increased from 18.0 kg/d for CON to18.8 kg/d for LH, but LB did not elicit a detectable increase in milk yield (18.1 kg/d). The daily yields of fat, protein, lactose, and total solids were increased by LH. Daily DMI and total tract apparent digestibility of nutrients did not differ among treatments. Both inoculated silages reduced acetate and increased butyrate proportions in ruminal VFA, but only LH silage reduced the acetate to propionate ratio (3.0 vs 3.3). First meal duration was shorter for CON compared to LH and LB. The proportion of daily intake between 0700 and 1300 h tended to be increased, and the proportion between 1900 and 0700 h was reduced by LH. The inoculation of sugarcane silage with affected rumen fermentation profile and feeding behavior of late lactation dairy cows, increasing the yield of milk solids.

Abstract

This paper shows the comparison obtained in the oil and gas production increase by cyclic gas injection produced at Provincia field and the cyclic solvent + gas injection (same field). According the composition of the production gas of Provincia Field (Table 1) used during the cyclic injection, is denominated as "rich gas", the molar fraction between C2 to C7+ is 31%. The Provincia Field is a mature field that has since the late 80's the Gas Lift as artificial lift system and for our particular case, that resource compressed gas was taken at 1000 psig to cyclically inject gas production. Besides, the cyclic gas injection & cyclic solvent + gas injection technology was proved. The cyclic rich gas injection of was put in practice in 9 wells of the field and the cyclic injection + gas was applied in the well Santos 94. For our specific case, the application of both technologies in the increase of productivity obtained in Santos 94 (API Gravity 20°) is going to compare. During the total cycle of injection & production of cyclic gas in Santos 94 an increase of oil production was obtained, 2134 Bls and 32,4 MMCF of gas. The oil and gas incremental production during the injection cycle of solvent + rich gas was 3232 Bls and 171 MMCF (32715 Equivalent Barrels).

Abstract

Photovoltaic (PV) generation systems have been increasingly used to generate electricity from renewable sources, attracting a growing interest. Recently, grid connected PV micro-generation facilities in individual homes have increased due to governmental policies as well as greater attention by industry. As low voltage (LV) distribution systems were built to make energy flow in one direction, the power feed-in of PV generation in rural low-voltage grids can influence power quality (PQ) as well as facility operation and reliability. This paper presents results on PQ analysis of a real PV generation facility connected to a rural low-voltage grid. Voltage fluctuations and voltage harmonic contents were observed. Statistical analysis shows a negative impact on PQ produced by this PV facility and also that only a small fraction of the energy available during a sunny day is converted, provoking losses of revenue and forcing the converter to work in an undesirable operating mode. We discuss the disturbances imposed upon the grid and their outcome regarding technical and economic viability of the PV system, as well as possible solutions. A low-voltage grid strengthening has been suggested and implemented. After that a new PQ analysis shows an improvement in the impact upon PQ, making this facility economically viable.

Abstract

A search for rare charmless decays of B0d and B0s mesons has been performed in the exclusive channels B0d(s) →ηη0, B0d(s) →ηπ0 and B0d(s) →π0π0. The data sample consisted of three million hadronic Z decays collected by the L3 experiment at LEP from 1991 through 1994. No candidate event has been observed and the following upper limits at 90% confidence level on the branching ratios have been set: Br(B0d→ηη) −4, Br(B0s →ηη) < 1.5 x 10−3, Br(B0d→ηπ0) < 2.5 x 10−4, Br(B0s→ηπ0) < 1.0 x 10−3, Br(B0d→π0π0) < 6.0 x 10−5, Br(B0s→π0π0) < 2.1 x 10−4. Abstract

The importance given to Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles and Electric Vehicles and its integration in world market has increased the interest in all related with the electrification of transportation, such as batteries and fast charging options for the users of this kind of cars. This paper presents the recently work conducted by the authors in this field of interest. It proposes an interface with the customer for fast PV charging station, observing the technological requirements. Components, communications protocols and flowcharts of the developed software program are shown.

37. Kuhn and the genesis of the 'new historiography of science'

Abstract

In this paper I identify a tension between the two sets of works by Kuhn regarding the genesis of the “new historiography” of science. In the first, it could be said that the change from the traditional to the new historiography is strictly endogenous (referring to internal causes or reasons). In the second, the change is predominantly exogenous. To address this question, I draw on a text that is considered to be less important among Kuhn’s works, but which, as shall be argued, allows some contact between Kuhn’s two approaches via Koyre. I seek to point out and differentiate the roles of Koyre and Kuhn – from Kuhn’s point of view – in the development of the historiography of science and, as a complement, present some reflections regarding the justification of the new historiography.

Abstract

In recent years, a revisionist process focused on logical positivism can be observed, particularly regarding Carnap’s work. In this paper, I argue against the interpretation that Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions having been published in the International Encyclopedia of Unified Science, co-edited by Carnap, is evidence of the revisionist idea that Carnap “would have found Structure philosophically congenial”. I claim that Kuhn’s book, from Carnap’s point of view, is not in philosophy of science but rather in history of science (in the context of a sharp discovery–justification distinction). It could also explain the fact that, despite his sympathetic letters to Kuhn as editor, Carnap never refers to Kuhn’s book in his work in philosophy of science.

Abstract

Electric vehicles are a relatively recent technology that is seeking for its place in the market. It has several advantages, such as the reduced greenhouse emissions, fuel savings and its ease of use. The increase of the electric vehicles in the roads raises issues about their impact on the grid, in terms of power quality. This paper presents the main considerations about power balance and the impact of an electric vehicle charge in the voltage, current, and total harmonic distortion. An experimental charging station prototype for Modes 2 and 3 is used to acquire data of voltage, current and active and reactive power for different charging profiles and battery state of charge.

Abstract

Microgeneration is the small-scale generation of heat or electric power or both, by individuals or buildings to meet their own needs. Recently, microgeneration is being regarded as a means to decentralize the power production of renewable energies, reducing the impacts on the grid caused by unexpected energy demands. Given the increase in microgeneration facilities, determining the quantity of energy produced and the power quality assumes growing importance in low, medium, or high voltage facilities. This paper presents a power quality analysis of two different facilities with photovoltaic generation localized in a rural area of Portugal, describing the voltage and frequency behaviour, the harmonic contents, and the total harmonic distortion. Statistical data are presented regarding the number of voltage events and occurrence of dips and swells in both facilities as a percentage of rated voltage. We conclude that some PV systems can severely affect voltage quality, forcing the grid to work at and even above the maximum voltage standard limit.

Abstract

In the Iberian Peninsula, the Mirandese dialect, spoken in Miranda do Douro (Portugal) close to the north-eastern border with Spain, has attracted much attention. Aim, subjects and methods: This study focuses on providing further insight into the connections forged between Miranda do Douro and regions in the nearby Province of Zamora. This is in order to better assess the extent to which such relations could have been detained by the current patterns of genetic diversity of the populations, whilst contributing to refining the knowledge on patterns of micro-differentiation within the Peninsula. The genetic characterization of both populations was performed through the analysis of X-chromosomal markers: X-STRs and X-indels.The results showed that Miranda do Douro tended to present slightly lower levels of diversity in comparison to the other studied regions, which can be a discreet sign of isolation of that population over the years that might have led the way to the preservation of a language not spoken anywhere else in the country. The analysis of X-STRs particularly brought to light the presence of a subtle population sub-structure at the micro-geographical area encompassing the north-eastern border, which seems to portray the importance of the political border as a mechanism withholding gene flow between the two countries.

Abstract

The leaffooted bug, Leptoglossus zonatus (Hemiptera: Coreidae) is an emerging pest of several crops around the World and up to now very little is known of its digestive system. In this article, glycoside hydrolase (carbohydrase) activities in the adult midgut cells and in the luminal contents of L. zonatus adult females were studied. The results showed the distribution of digestive carbohydrases in adults of this heteropteran species in the different intestinal compartments. Determination of the spatial distribution of α-glucosidase activity in L. zonatus midgut showed only one major molecular form, which was not equally distributed between soluble and membrane-bound isoforms, being more abundant as a membrane-bound enzyme. The majority of digestive carbohydrases were found in the soluble fractions. Activities against starch, maltose and the synthetic substrate NPαGlu were found to show the highest levels of activity, followed by enzymes active against galactosyl oligosaccharides. Based on ion-exchange chromatography elution profiles and banding patterns in mildly denaturing electrophoresis, both midgut α-amylases and α-galactosidases showed at least two isoforms. The data suggested that the majority of carbohydrases involved in initial digestion were present in the midgut lumen, whereas final digestion of starch and of galactosyl oligosaccharides takes place partially within the lumen and partially at the cell surface. The complex of carbohydrases here described was qualitatively appropriate for the digestion of free oligosaccharides and oligomaltodextrins released by α-amylases acting on maize seed starch granules.

Abstract

The role of reinfection in the evolution of Chagas' disease was evaluated in dogs alternately infected with the 147 and SC-1 strains of Trypanosoma cruzi. A parasitologic, serologic, clinical, and electrocardiographic follow-up was carried out on the infected and noninfected dogs. The dogs were reinfected five times over a period of 38 months. No deaths were observed during the experiment. They presented a brief oligosymptomatic acute phase. The level of parasitemia decreased progressively with the number of reinfections. Bloodstream parasites were not detectable after the fifth reinfection. All parasite samples isolated during the follow-up were zymodeme B, corresponding to strain 147, irrespective of the strain with which the dogs were first infected and of the triatomine species used for isolation. Conversely, amplification by the polymerase chain reaction of a segment of the T. cruzi mini-exon gene showed the simultaneous presence of both strains in three of the eight reinfected animals. Antibody titers were greater among the dogs successively infected than those infected only once. Neither amastigotes nor T. cruzi DNA were detected in the tissues of the infected dogs. Alterations related to Chagas' disease were identified only in the heart and consisted of chronic focal and discrete myocarditis, compatible with the indeterminate form of Chagas' disease. All infected dogs developed this form of the disease, which was independent of the number of infections.

Abstract

A search for single and multi-photon events with missing energy is performed using data collected at centre-of-mass energies between 161 GeV and 172 GeV for a total of 20.9 pb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The results obtained are used to derive the value for the $\nu\bar{\nu}\gamma(\gamma)$ cross section as well as upper limits on new physics processes.
