1. Occurrence and Evolution of Switchbacks in the Inner Heliosphere: Parker Solar Probe Observations

Abstract

Since its launch in 2018, the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission revealed the presence of numerous fascinating phenomena occurring closer to the Sun, such as the presence of ubiquitous switchbacks (SBs). The SBs are large magnetic field deflections of the local magnetic field relative to a background field. We investigated the statistical properties of the SBs during the first 10 encounters between 13.28 and 58 solar radii ( R _⊙ ) using data from the SWEAP and FIELDS suites on board PSP. We find that the occurrence percentage of small deflections with respect to the Parker spiral decreases with radial distance ( R ). In contrast, the occurrence percentage of the large deflections (SBs) increases with R , as does the SB patches. We also find that the occurrence of SBs correlates with the bulk velocity of the solar wind, i.e., the higher the solar wind velocity, the higher the SB occurrence. For V _sw ≤ 400 km s ^−1 , the SB occurrence percentage shows a constantly increasing trend between 13 and 58 R _⊙ . However, for V _sw > 400 km s ^−1 , the occurrence percentage saturates beyond 35 R _⊙ . The occurrence percentage of mini SB patches (200 s) increases with R . Sub-Alfvénic regions that we analyzed during Encounters 8–10 have not shown any SBs. This analysis of the PSP data hints that some of the SBs are decaying and some are being created in situ.

Abstract We review the physics opportunities of the Future Circular Collider, covering its e+e-, pp, ep and heavy ion programmes. We describe the measurement capabilities of each FCC component, addressing the study of electroweak, Higgs and strong interactions, the top quark and flavour, as well as phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We highlight the synergy and complementarity of the different colliders, which will contribute to a uniquely coherent and ambitious research programme, providing an unmatchable combination of precision and sensitivity to new physics.

Abstract

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the top priority was to hinder the spread of the virus and prevent the collapse of the health systems. To achieve this, it was mandatory to ensure adequate supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE), which may not have been available in the short-term during the first months of the crisis. While leading manufacturing companies all over the world were retooling their factories to produce medical equipment, 3D printing offered a transition solution to quickly supply PPEs in the case of emergency. In this context, the University of Castilla-La Mancha started a new solidarity project to produce PPEs via 3D printing, especially for healthcare staff. This project was characterized by the commitment of several geographically distributed volunteers, with limitations due to confinement. The group of volunteers required an organizational model supported by ad-hoc technology to make their collaboration efficient. This article demonstrates how a centralized production model is not efficient in such a situation, and proposes a novel web system supported by an intelligent recommender, which facilitates a distributed organizational model that optimizes manufacturing and delivery times of PPEs. The results show how our proposal drastically improves the efficiency of the group of collaborators, and adequately address the high social demand concentrated in a short period. This was a crucial change for the production and distribution of over 23,500 PPEs during the first 40 days of the crisis, in one of the regions with a higher rate of COVID-19 cases in Europe.

Abstract

The design, fabrication, and tests of the new generation of superconducting magnets for the High Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) require the support of an adequate sensing technology able to assure the integrity of the strain-sensitive and brittle superconducting cables through the whole service life of the magnet: assembly up to 150 MPa, cool down to 1.9 K, and powering up to about 16 kA. A precise temperature monitoring is also needed, in order to guarantee the safe working condition of the superconducting cables in the power transmission lines (SC-Link) designed to feed the magnet over long distance. Fiber Bragg Grating-based temperature and strain monitoring systems have been implemented in the first SC-Link prototype and in two subscale dipole magnets and tested in the cryogenic test facility at CERN, at 30 K, 77 K, and 1.9 K.

Abstract

About one hundred magnets of six different types shall be installed in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) in the years 2026-2028 at CERN. The magnets design, construction and test are based on CERN collaborations with institutes and industrial partners in USA, Spain, Italy, Japan and China. Three types of correctors are based on Nb‒Ti technology and feature conductor peak fields in the 2 to 4 T range: for all of them the prototype phase has been successfully completed. The production is well advanced for the superferric correctors, and is starting for the canted cosine theta correctors and for the nested correctors. The separation and recombination Nb‒Ti dipoles D1 and D2, with a 4.5-6 T bore field range, are both in the prototype phase after the completion of the short model program. The most challenging magnet, the Nb3Sn quadrupole with conductor peak field above 11 T, is in the prototype phase at CERN and halfway through the production phase in the USA. In this paper we will give, for each type of magnet, an overview of the main achievements obtained so far and we will outline the technical points still needing validation from the prototype program.

Abstract

We argue that a description of supersymmetric extended objects from a unified geometric point of view requires an enlargement of superspace. To this aim we study in a systematic way how superspace groups and algebras arise from Grassmann spinors when these are assumed to be the only primary entities. In the process, we recover generalized spacetime superalgebras and extensions of supersymmetry found earlier. The enlargement of ordinary superspace with new parameters gives rise to extended superspace groups, on which manifestly supersymmetric actions may be constructed for various types of p-branes, including D-branes (given by Chevalley-Eilenberg cocycles) with their Born-Infeld fields. This results in a field/extended superspace democracy for superbranes: all brane fields appear as pull-backs from a suitable target superspace. The OSp(2|2)-invariant planar dynamics of a D=4 superparticle near the horizon of a large mass extreme black hole is described by an N=2 superconformal mechanics, with the SO(2) charge being the superparticle's angular momentum. The {\it non-manifest} superconformal invariance of the superpotential term is shown to lead to a shift in the SO(2) charge by the value of its coefficient, which we identify as the orbital angular momentum. After defining cohomologically higher order BRST and anti-BRST operators for a compact simple algebra {\cal G}, the associated higher order Laplacians are introduced and the corresponding supersymmetry algebra $\Sigma$ is analysed. These operators act on the states generated by a set of fermionic ghost fields transforming under the adjoint representation. In contrast with the standard case, for which the Laplacian is given by the quadratic Casimir, the higher order Laplacians $W$ are not in general given completely in terms of the Casimir-Racah operators, and may involve the ghost number operator. The higher order version of the Hodge decomposition is exhibited. The limit of this algebra when $q$ is a $n$-th root of unity is also studied in detail. By means of a chain rule expansion, the left and right derivatives are identified with the charge $Q$ and covariant derivative $D$ encountered in ordinary/fractional supersymmetry and this leads to new results for these operators. A generalized Berezin integral and fractional superspace measure arise as a natural part of our formalism. When $q$ is a root of unity the algebra is found to have a non-trivial Hopf structure, extending that associated with the anyonic line. One-dimensional ordinary/fractional superspace is identified with the braided line when $q$ is a root of unity, so that one-dimensional ordinary/fractional supersymmetry can be viewed as invariance under translation along this line. It is shown that the non-trivial cocycles on simple Lie algebras may be used to introduce antisymmetric multibrackets which lead to higher-order Lie algebras, the definition of which is given. We re-examine all the contractions related with the ${\cal U}_q(su(2))$ deformed algebra and study the consequences that the contraction process has for their structure. We also show using ${\cal U}_q(su(2))\times{\cal U}(u(1))$ as an example that, as in the undeformed case, the contraction may generate Hopf algebra cohomology. We shall show that most of the different Hopf algebra deformations obtained have a bicrossproduct or a cocycle bicrossproduct structure, for which we shall also give their dual `group' versions. The deformations of the Galilei algebra and their associated noncommutative Newtonian spacetimes are investigated. This is done by analyzing the possible nonrelativistic limits of an eleven generator (pseudo)extended \kap-Poincar\'e algebra $\tilde{\cal P}_\kappa$ and their implications for the existence of a first order differential calculus. Abstract

International audience; For the HL-LHC project, a 90 mm NbTi cos(2θ) double aperture quadrupole magnet with an operating gradient of 120 T/m at 1.9 K has been designed as an option to replace the 70 mm aperture LHC quadrupole MQY. CEA in collaboration with CERN designed and manufactured a single aperture short model magnet with a magnetic length of 1.215 m at 1.9 K called MQYYM. The MQYYM cold test occurred at CEA at 4.2 K in a vertical cryogenic station. During the power test, the operating gradient at 1.9 K has been reached after two training quenches. All along the test, magnetic and mechanical measurements were done using respectively a rotating probe and strain gauges. This paper describes the performance of the MQYYM at 4.2 K and gives an analysis of the data acquired during the test, including training behavior, quench detection, protection and field quality measurements.

Abstract

Launched on 12 Aug. 2018, NASA's Parker Solar Probe had completed 13 of its scheduled 24 orbits around the Sun by Nov. 2022. The mission's primary science goal is to determine the structure and dynamics of the Sun's coronal magnetic field, understand how the solar corona and wind are heated and accelerated, and determine what processes accelerate energetic particles. Parker Solar Probe returned a treasure trove of science data that far exceeded quality, significance, and quantity expectations, leading to a significant number of discoveries reported in nearly 700 peer-reviewed publications. The first four years of the 7-year primary mission duration have been mostly during solar minimum conditions with few major solar events. Starting with orbit 8 (i.e., 28 Apr. 2021), Parker flew through the magnetically dominated corona, i.e., sub-Alfv\'enic solar wind, which is one of the mission's primary objectives. In this paper, we present an overview of the scientific advances made mainly during the first four years of the Parker Solar Probe mission, which go well beyond the three science objectives that are: (1) Trace the flow of energy that heats and accelerates the solar corona and solar wind; (2) Determine the structure and dynamics of the plasma and magnetic fields at the sources of the solar wind; and (3) Explore mechanisms that accelerate and transport energetic particles., Comment: 157 pages, 65 figures

The use of pressurized bladders for stress control of superconducting magnets was firstly proposed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the early 2000s. Since then, the so-called ‘bladders and keys’ procedure has become one of the reference techniques for the assembly of high-field accelerator magnets and demonstrators. Exploiting the advantages of this method is today of critical importance for Nb$_{3}$Sn-based accelerator magnets, whose production requires the preservation of tight stress targets in the superconducting coils to limit the effects of the strain sensitivity and brittleness of the conductor. The present manuscript reports on the results of an experimental campaign focused on the optimization of the ‘bladders and keys’ assembly process in the MQXFB quadrupoles. These 7.2 m long magnets shall be among the first Nb$_{3}$Sn cryomagnets to be installed in a particle accelerator as a part of the High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC. One of the main practical implications of the bladders technique, especially important when applied to long magnets like MQXFB, is that to insert the loading keys, the opening of a certain clearance in the support structure is required. The procedure used so far for MQXF magnets involved an overstress in the coils during bladder inflation. The work presented here shows that such an overshoot can be eliminated thanks to additional bladders properly positioned in the structure. This optimized method was validated in a short model magnet and in a full-length mechanical model, becoming the new baseline for the series production at CERN Furthermore, the results are supported by numerical predictions using finite element models. Abstract

International audience; In the framework of the HL-LHC project, a NbTi double aperture quadrupole magnet MQYY is being developed as an option to replace the LHC magnet MQY. This 90 mm double aperture cos-2θ quadrupole has an operating gradient of 120 T/m at 1.9 K. To demonstrate the validity of the design, a single aperture short model of 1.2 m called MQYYM has been developed. Designed by CEA and manufactured in collaboration with CERN, the MQYYM magnet is being prepared for cold test at CEA in a dedicated cryogenic station with LHe bath at 1 bar 4.2 K and 23 mbar 1.9 K. First, this paper will summarize the initial and as-built magnet designs based on the assembly at CERN. Second, updated mechanical measurements of collaring and axial pre-loading will be presented. Finally warm magnetic measurements performed at CERN during the assembly and at CEA during test preparation will be detailed.

In order to qualify the magnet design and characterize its performance with different conductors, cable geometries and pre-load configurations, five short model magnets, called MQXFS, were fabricated, assembled and tested. Abstract

International audience; R2D2, the Research Racetrack Dipole Demonstrator, is a short model being developed within a collaboration between CEA Paris-Saclay and CERN. The goal of the program is to develop key technologies for future high field 16 T Nb3Sn magnets for particle colliders. In the particular case of block-coil designs, two different cable grades are wound in the same coil layer, in order to maximize the current density, therefore to minimize the size of the magnet and the use of superconductor. One of the most challenging technologies with this grading concept, is the connection between two cables grades. CEA Paris-Saclay has proposed a concept of external joints, for which the cable exits are guided outside of the coil to perform the connections between the cable grades. The R2D2 project is aimed at demonstrating this technology in a representative demonstrator magnet, while simplifying and reducing the risks when possible, as an intermediate step towards 16 T magnets. In particular, the magnet is composed of single-layer racetrack coils, mainly to reduce the use of conductor and simplify some fabrication steps. However, the complexity inherent to the external joints requires a special focus in the design of the coil ends. To do so, the design of the magnet has been performed using a combination of CAD (Computer Aided Design), magnetic and mechanical 3D FEM (Finite-Elements Models). This paper will explain the design choices leading to a safe operation of the magnet in terms of peak fields and peak stresses.

Abstract

Lymphoceles are lymphatic fluid collections resulting from lymphatic vessel disruption after surgery or trauma. They are most often described following retroperitoneal surgeries such as cystectomies, prostatectomies, renal transplants, and gynecologic surgeries. Most lymphoceles are asymptomatic and resolve spontaneously without treatment. If persistent, they can become infected or exert mass effect on adjacent structures causing pain, urinary, or lower limb edema particularly for lymphoceles in the pelvis Symptomatic lymphoceles should be treated to relieve symptoms and prevent functional compromise of vital adjacent structures. Although surgery has been traditionally accepted as the gold standard treatment, advances in imaging and interventional technology allow for less invasive, percutaneous treatment. Available minimally invasive treatment options include percutaneous aspiration, catheter drainage, sclerotherapy, and lymphangiography with lymphatic embolization. A review of these treatment options and a suggested algorithm for managing lymphoceles is presented.

Abstract

The fast thermal and electromagnetic transients that occur in a superconducting magnet in case of a quench have the potential of generating large mechanical stresses both in the superconducting coils and in the magnet structure. While the investigation of such quench loads should generally be conducted to ensure a safe operation of the system, its importance is greatly enlarged in the case of high-field magnets based on strain sensitive superconductors. For these, a rigorous analysis of the magnet mechanics during a quench becomes critical. The scope of this work is hence to bring, for the first time, a detailed understanding of the three-dimensional mechanical behavior of a Nb3Sn accelerator magnet during a quench discharge. The study relies on the use of finite element models, where various multi-domain simulations are employed together to solve the coupled physics of the problem. Our analysis elaborates on the case study of the new MQXF quadrupole magnet, currently being developed for the high-luminosity upgrade of the LHC. Notably, we could find a very good agreement between the results of the simulation and experimental data from full-scale magnet tests. The validated model confirms the appearance of new peak stresses in the superconducting coils. An increase in the most relevant transverse coil stresses of 20–40 MPa with respect to the values after magnet cool-down has been found for the examined case. Abstract

For the upgrade of the LHC during the long shutdown 2 and for the HL-LHC upgrade during the long shutdown 3, a few 15 m 8.3 T Nb–Ti main dipole magnets are foreseen to be replaced by two 11 T Nb3Sn dipoles, 5.5 m long each. After the production and test of three single aperture models at CERN, the first 2-m-long twin-aperture model has been tested. The model was used to exploit the limits of the model in terms of quench performance and protection. The protection studies included the heater efficiency studies and hotspot temperature studies. In this paper, the performance of the magnet DP101 in terms of training behavior, detection, and protection, and other cold powering test will be presented and discussed.
