1. Three-dimensional characterization of sex differences in abdominal aortic aneurysm progression via vascular deformation mapping

Abstract: Abstract Although abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are more common in men, women are at greater risk for AAA growth/rupture. Vascular deformation mapping (VDM) utilizes deformable image registration to qualify and quantify 3D-AAA growth using computed tomography angiograms (CTA). In this study we leveraged VDM to investigate sex differences in AAA growth patterns. Patients with infra-renal AAA and ≥ 2 CTA were identified. Males and females were matched for age, hypertension, and smoking history. Patient characteristics, maximum diameter (Dmax), and AAA volume were obtained. CTA images were segmented, and VDM was conducted to quantify 3D AAA growth rate per year (GR, cm/year). Statistical shape modeling was utilized to compute mean aneurysm shapes and 3D GR. Average GR was evaluated at specific regions of the aortic surface for males and females. Seventeen males and 17 females were matched. At the individual level, there were no sex differences in changes in Dmax or AAA volume. However, females had larger GR across the anterior and right lateral AAA (1.33 vs 0.89 and 1.56 vs 0.74 cm/year, respectively), despite no difference in posterior or left lateral AAA GR. Despite comparable changes in Dmax, AAA volume, and GR magnitude, women demonstrated a more eccentric, anterior-predominant, AAA growth pattern.

Abstract: Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is known to promote arterial collateral circulation development from mesenteric vessel compression and can lead to the development of visceral aneurysms. These aneurysms are often diagnosed at the time of rupture and pose a significant morality risk without appropriate intervention. A celiacomesenteric trunk is a rare anatomic variant in which the celiac artery and superior mesenteric artery share a common origin and has been postulated as a risk factor for developing MALS. In this report, we present a novel case of MALS in a patient with a celiacomesenteric trunk and a superior mesenteric artery aneurysm.

Abstract: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a complex disease that requires regular imaging surveillance to monitor for aneurysm stability. Current imaging surveillance techniques use maximum diameter, often assessed by computed tomography angiography (CTA), to assess risk of rupture and determine candidacy for operative repair. However, maximum diameter measurements can be variable, do not reliably predict rupture risk and future AAA growth, and may be an oversimplification of complex AAA anatomy. Vascular deformation mapping (VDM) is a recently described technique that uses deformable image registration to quantify three-dimensional changes in aortic wall geometry, which has been previously used to quantify three-dimensional (3D) growth in thoracic aortic aneurysms, but the feasibility of the VDM technique for measuring 3D growth in AAA has not yet been studied. Seven patients with infra-renal AAAs were identified and VDM was used to identify three-dimensional maps of AAA growth. In the present study, we demonstrate that VDM is able to successfully identify and quantify 3D growth (and the lack thereof) in AAAs that is not apparent from maximum diameter. Furthermore, VDM can be used to quantify growth of the excluded aneurysm sac after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). VDM may be a useful adjunct for surgical planning and appears to be a sensitive modality for detecting regional growth of AAAs.

Abstract: Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) has been used as an alternative to carotid endarterectomy and transfemoral carotid artery stenting. Although TCAR has been associated with a decrease in perioperative strokes compared with transfemoral carotid artery stenting, little is known about the safety of cerebral blood during flow reversal or the value of adjunctive electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring in performing TCAR. We describe two cases of EEG changes in patients undergoing TCAR. These cases highlight the use of adjunctive EEG and provide examples of test clamping to assess for compromised collateral cerebral blood flow in patients undergoing TCAR. 6. Impact of Cannabis Use on Outcomes after Lower Extremity Bypass

Abstract: Cannabis is one of the most commonly used substances in the United States, with national use on the rise. However, there is a paucity of data regarding the effects of cannabis and surgical outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the association of cannabis use on postoperative outcomes after lower extremity bypass.We queried a large statewide registry from 2014 to 2021 to assess patients who underwent lower extremity bypass procedures. Data were gathered regarding cannabis use and the association with postoperative outcomes at 30 days and 1 year.A total of 11,013 patients were identified. Ninety-one percent of patients (10,024) reported no cannabis use, whereas 9.0% (989) reported cannabis use in the past month. Compared with noncannabis users, patients using cannabis had higher opioid use at discharge (odds ratio [OR]: 1.56, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.28-1.90), decreased bypass patency at 30 days (OR: 0.52, 95% CI: 0.36-0.78) and 1 year (OR: 0.64, 95% CI 0.47-0.86), and an increased amputation rate at 1 year (OR: 1.25, 95% CI: 1.02-1.52) after lower extremity bypass.This study shows that cannabis use in vascular surgical patients was associated with decreased graft patency, increased amputation, and increased opioid use after lower extremity bypass procedures. Although future studies are needed, the present study provides novel data that can be used to counsel patients undergoing vascular surgery.

Abstract: Objective The current study evaluated all-cause 30-day readmissions after carotid endarterectomy. Methods Patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy were selected from the Cerner Health Facts® database using ICD-9-CM procedure codes from their index admission. Readmission within 30 days of discharge was determined. Chi-square analysis determined characteristics of the index admission (demographics, diagnoses, postoperative medications, and laboratory results) associated with readmission. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify characteristics independently associated with readmission. Results In total, 5257 patients undergoing elective carotid endarterectomy were identified. Readmission within 30 days was 3.1%. After multivariable adjustment, readmission was associated with end-stage renal disease (OR: 3.21, 95% CI: 1.01–10.2), hemorrhage or hematoma (OR: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.15–4.77), procedural complications (OR: 3.07, 95% CI: 1.24–7.57), use of bronchodilators (OR: 1.48, 95% CI: 1.03–2.11), increased Charlson index scores (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.08–1.38), and electrolyte abnormalities (hyponatremia Conclusions Factors associated with readmission following carotid endarterectomy included younger age, increased comorbidity burden, end-stage renal disease, electrolyte disorders, the use of bronchodilators, and complications including bleeding (hemorrhage or hematoma). Of note, in this real-world study, only 40% of the patients received protamine, despite evidence-based literature demonstrating the reduced risk of bleeding complications. As healthcare moves towards quality of care-driven reimbursement, physician modifiable targets such as protamine utilization to reduce bleeding are greatly needed to reduce readmission, and failure to reduce preventable physician-driven complications after carotid interventions may be associated with decreased reimbursement.

13. Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and treatment targets in vascular surgery patients

Abstract: Introduction Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) is a known contributing factor to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and a primary therapeutic target for medical management of ASCVD. Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL) has recently been identified as a secondary therapeutic target but is not yet widely used in vascular surgery patients. We sought to assess if vascular surgery patients were undertreated per non-HDL therapeutic guidelines. Methods This was an observational study that used a single-center database to identify a cohort of adult patients who received care from a vascular surgery provider from 01/2001 to 07/2021. ICD-9/10-CM codes were used to identify patients with a medical history of hyperlipidemia (HLD), coronary artery disease (CAD), cerebrovascular occlusive disease (CVOD), peripheral artery disease (PAD), hypertension (HTN), or diabetes mellitus (DM). Patient smoking status and medications were also identified. Lab values were obtained from the first and last patient encounter within our system. Primary outcomes were serum concentrations of LDL and non-HDL, with therapeutic thresholds defined as 70 mg/dL and 100 mg/dL, respectively. Results The cohort included 2465 patients. At first encounter, average age was 59.3 years old, 21.4% were on statins, 8.4% were on a high-intensity statin, 25.7% were diagnosed with HLD, 5.2% with CAD, 15.3% with PAD, 26.3% with DM, 18.6% with HTN, and 2.1% with CVOD. At final encounter, mean age was 64.8 years, 23.5% were on statins with 10.1% on high-intensity statin. Diagnoses frequency did not change at final encounter. At first encounter, nearly two-thirds of patients were not at an LDL Discussion Among vascular surgery patients, over half did not meet non-HDL targets. These results suggest that we may be vastly under-performing adequate medical optimization with only about one-fourth of patients on a statin at their final encounter and approximately one-tenth of patients being treated with a high-intensity statin. With recent evidence supporting non-HDL as a valuable measurement for atherosclerotic risk, there is potential to optimize medical management beyond current high-intensity statin therapy. Further investigation is needed regarding the risk of adverse events between patients treated with these varied therapeutic targets.

14. Importance of the profunda femoris upon patency following aortoiliac procedures

Abstract: The importance of the profunda femoris for aortoiliac inflow procedure patency is well-recognized. We aim to quantify the characteristics of the profunda femoris and its relation to patency following aortoiliac inflow procedures.Patients undergoing aortoiliac inflow procedures between 2009 and 2019 were identified. These were classified into aorto-bifemoral bypass (ABF), extra-anatomic bypass (EAB), femoral endarterectomy (FEA), and iliac stenting. Preoperative imaging characteristics of the profunda femoris were reviewed as well as outcomes.We performed 269 procedures in 202 patients. Of these, 162 were men (59.8%), with a mean age of 61 years (standard deviation, 11.45 years). A total of 123 patients (45.3%) presented with claudication, 69 (25.9%) with critical limb ischemia, and 30 (11.2%) with acute limb ischemia. Fifty patients (18.6%) underwent ABF, 44 (16.4%) underwent EAB, 57 (21.2%) underwent FEA, and 158 (58.7%) underwent iliac stenting. Fourteen patients (5.2%) underwent FEA plus iliac stenting. Fifty-two patients (19.2%) had an occluded superficial femoral artery. Twenty-four patients (8.9%) had additional outflow procedures performed during the index operation, including infrainguinal endovascular intervention in 10 patients (3.7%), infrainguinal bypass in 10 patients (3.7%), and femoropopliteal thrombectomy in 5 patients (1.9%). The mean follow-up was 17.5 months with overall 2-year primary patency (PP) of 79%. Two-year PP was 94.7% for FEA, 85.6% for ABF, 79.8% for iliac stents, and 62.5% for EAB. Unadjusted analysis revealed that loss of primary assisted patency was associated with active smoking (67.6% vs 48.6%; P = .035), lower creatinine (mean, 0.84 vs 1.06 mg/dL; P = .003), critical limb ischemia vs claudication (37.8% vs 21.4%; P = .037), and profunda femoris with fewer than five branches2 mm in size (88.2% vs 68.5%; P = .011). Multivariate analysis confirmed that a profunda with five or more branches2 mm in diameter was significantly associated with a lower risk of thrombosis (odds ratio, 0.30; P = .034). Size of the profunda greater than 6 mm approached statistical significance on univariate analysis (35% of the non-thrombosed vs 21% in the thrombosed; P = .073), but did not significantly affect risk of thrombosis on the multivariate analysis (odds ratio, 0.58; P = .25). The 2-year PP when all operations were considered was 76% compared with 72% for profunda with fewer than five branches2 mm.Anatomic characteristics of the profunda are associated with patency of inflow procedures. Care should be taken to assess the main profunda and branch diameters on preoperative imaging. A concomitant infrainguinal procedure should be considered in cases of profunda with inadequate large branches, to ensure long-term patency of the inflow operation.

Abstract: Background The optical coherence tomography (OCT) catheter, Ocelot (Avinger Inc., Redwood City, CA), has been utilized to cross Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus Document (TASC) D lesions. Studies have assessed the characteristics of high-risk plaques in the carotid artery, but few, if any data exist evaluating OCT and plaque morphology in the superficial femoral artery (SFA). This study assessed SFA plaque morphology using OCT and lesion crossing success in chronic total occlusions (CTOs). Methods We reviewed patients who underwent attempted infrainguinal revascularization with TASC D CTOs using the Ocelot catheter between June 2014 and June 2018, and recorded demographic information, smoking status, and medical comorbidities. A matched cohort of 44 successfully crossed lesions was compared to 44 that failed; images insufficient for analysis were excluded. The morphology of the plaque was studied using OCT at the proximal cap, midpoint of the lesion, and the distal cap. Morphologic data studied included the intima-media thickness ratio, cross-sectional area of the plaque, and gray-scale median of the plaque. Results A total of 140 patients who underwent lower extremity procedures for TASC D lesions of the SFA with OCT imaging were reviewed with a crossing rate of 69.0%. No significant differences were found between crossed and uncrossed lesions for intima-media thickness or cross-sectional area at the proximal cap, the midpoint, or the distal cap. A lower gray-scale median at the proximal cap was associated with the ability to cross the chronic SFA occlusion (P=0.05). Subgroup analysis stratified by smoking and calcium content also demonstrated that a lower gray-scale median at the proximal cap was associated with the ability to cross the chronic SFA occlusion (P=0.01 and P=0.04, respectively). Conclusions Lower gray-scale median at the proximal cap of a chronic SFA occlusion calculated using OCT images was associated with the ability to successfully cross the lesion. Higher plaque gray-scale median is correlated with increased calcium, greater fibrous tissue, and signal-rich plaques. Gray-scale median in the proximal cap is useful marker to determine plaque composition and subsequent technical success for crossing chronic SFA occlusions. Further studies are needed to fully determine the utility of OCT images to predict successful endovascular revascularization of chronic SFA occlusions.

Abstract: Objectives: Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) has emerged as a less invasive alternative to open repair for ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (rAAA), but comparisons to traditional open rAAA repair and late complications leading to readmission are limited. Materials and Methods: Hospitalizations for patients undergoing repair for rAAA were selected from the Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD). In-hospital mortality, complications, 30-day readmission, readmission diagnoses, and charges were evaluated. Design-adjusted chi-square, Wilcoxon test, and logistic regression were used for analysis. Results: During 2014-2016, 3,629 open rAAA and 5,037 EVAR were identified. The index mortality rate was 21.4% for EVAR vs. 33.5% for open (p < .0001). Median index length of stay (LOS) was 4.9 days for EVAR vs. 8.6 days for open repair (p < 0.001). All-cause 30-day readmission after rAAA was higher following EVAR (18.9%) than open (14.3%, p = .007). Time to readmission and charges for readmission stays did not differ between procedure groups. Respiratory complications were more common following open repair than EVAR (20.4% vs 11.4%, respectively; p = .008). Patients who underwent open repair suffered more infectious complications than patients treated with EVAR during readmission (49.2% vs 39.8%, respectively; p = 0.054). In multivariable analysis, factors associated with readmission included having EVAR during the index stay (Odds ratio [OR] = 1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.14-1.88; p = .003), increased length of index stay (OR = 1.01; 95% CI 1.01-1.02; p = 0.002), chronic kidney disease (OR = 1.51; 95% CI 1.18-1.94; p = .001), and coronary artery disease (OR = 1.32; 95% CI 1.02-1.71; p = .034). Aggregate readmission charges totaled $79 million. Readmissions were most often infectious complications for both repair types. Conclusions: EVAR was used more often than open repair for rAAA. In-hospital mortality and length of the index stay were significantly lower following EVAR. After multivariable adjustment, the odds of readmission were 1.5 times higher after EVAR, costing the health system more over time when prevalence and readmission are considered. Coronary artery disease, chronic kidney disease, and index length of stay were also associated with 30-day readmission. Further investigation into reasons why a less invasive procedure, EVAR, has a higher readmission rate and understanding post-discharge infectious complications may help lower overall health care utilization after rAAA.

Abstract: Frailty has been associated with poor postoperative outcomes. This study evaluated the 5-factor modified frailty index (mFI-5) to assess complications, mortality, discharge disposition, and readmission in patients undergoing lower extremity (LE) bypass for critical limb ischemia (CLI).The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program vascular module (2011-2017) was utilized to identify patients undergoing LE bypass for CLI. Adverse events included infectious complications, bleeding complications, prolonged ventilation, amputation, readmission, and death. Patients were divided into groups based on mFI-5 scores: mFI1 (0), mFI2 (0.2), mFI3 (0.4), and mFI4 (0.6-1). Data were analyzed using the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel statistic for general association and multivariable logistic regression. About 11,530 patients undergoing bypass for CLI were identified (42% rest pain and 58% tissue loss; 23% mFI1, 31% mFI2, 27% mFI3, and 19% mFI4; 64% men and 36% women). An increase in mFI-5 was associated with higher 30-day mortality (mFI1 = 0.62%; mFI12 = 1.45%; mFI13 = 1.35%; and mFI14 = 3.09%; P .0001). After adjustment for age, mFI4 was associated with increased mortality compared with mFI1 (odds ratio, 3.80; 95% confidence interval, 1.69-8.54). Increased mFI-5 was associated with bleeding complications, wound infections, urinary tract infections, prolonged ventilation, sepsis, unplanned reoperations, and discharge to nonhome destination (all P .01). Compared with mFI1 (13.5%), mFI4 was associated with increased 30-day readmission (24.8%, P .0001). In patients undergoing LE bypass for CLI, higher mFI-5 was associated with increased postoperative complications, in-hospital and 30-day mortality, nonhome discharge, and 30-day readmission. The mFI-5 as an easily calculated tool can identify patients at high risk for inferior outcomes. It should be incorporated into discharge planning after LE bypass for CLI.

Abstract: Objective: Enhanced expression of PAI-1 (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1) has been implicated in atherosclerosis formation in humans with obesity and metabolic syndrome. However, little is known about the effects of pharmacological targeting of PAI-1 on atherogenesis. This study examined the effects of pharmacological PAI-1 inhibition on atherosclerosis formation in a murine model of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Approach and Results: LDL receptor-deficient ( ldlr −/− ) mice were fed a Western diet high in cholesterol, fat, and sucrose to induce obesity, metabolic dysfunction, and atherosclerosis. Western diet triggered significant upregulation of PAI-1 expression compared with normal diet controls. Addition of a pharmacological PAI-1 inhibitor (either PAI-039 or MDI-2268) to Western diet significantly inhibited obesity and atherosclerosis formation for up to 24 weeks without attenuating food consumption. Pharmacological PAI-1 inhibition significantly decreased macrophage accumulation and cell senescence in atherosclerotic plaques. Recombinant PAI-1 stimulated smooth muscle cell senescence, whereas a PAI-1 mutant defective in LRP1 (LDL receptor-related protein 1) binding did not. The prosenescent effect of PAI-1 was blocked by PAI-039 and R2629, a specific anti-LRP1 antibody. PAI-039 significantly decreased visceral adipose tissue inflammation, hyperglycemia, and hepatic triglyceride content without altering plasma lipid profiles. Conclusions: Pharmacological targeting of PAI-1 inhibits atherosclerosis in mice with obesity and metabolic syndrome, while inhibiting macrophage accumulation and cell senescence in atherosclerotic plaques, as well as obesity-associated metabolic dysfunction. PAI-1 induces senescence of smooth muscle cells in an LRP1-dependent manner. These results help to define the role of PAI-1 in atherosclerosis formation and suggest a new plasma-lipid-independent strategy for inhibiting atherogenesis.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE Peripheral artery disease (PAD) has been shown to affect health status and quality of life; however, the disability associated by specific anatomic level of disease is unknown. We evaluated patients presenting with claudication by anatomic level and used the Peripheral Artery Questionnaire (PAQ), a PAD-specific validated tool, to quantify patients' symptoms, function, treatment satisfaction, and quality of life. METHODS The Patient-centered Outcomes Related to Treatment Practices in peripheral Arterial disease: Investigating Trajectories (PORTRAIT) registry is a multicenter, international, prospective study of patients with PAD. Anatomic level of PAD was stratified as follows: aortoiliac only, femoral-popliteal only, infrapopliteal only, and multilevel disease. Health status information was collected at baseline and at 3, 6, and 12 months using the PAQ. Student t-test, χ2 test, and linear mixed effects models were examined. RESULTS Anatomic data were present in 623 (48.9%) of 1275 patients: 127 aortoiliac (20.4%), 221 femoral-popliteal (35.5%), 39 infrapopliteal (6.3%), and 236 multilevel disease (37.9%). Groups were similar by sex and race. Baseline PAQ summary scores differed between lesions, with multilevel disease having the lowest (poorest) estimated PAQ summary score (P = .014). Patients with aortoiliac disease were significantly younger, were more likely to be smokers, and presented with higher ankle-brachial index (all P < .05). Almost one-fourth of patients underwent an intervention by 3 months, 83% of which were endovascular. Repeated-measures analyses demonstrated a significant association between anatomic lesion and PAQ scores over time (P = .016), even after adjustment for age, sex, work status, ankle-brachial index, smoking, history of diabetes and chronic kidney disease, and country. Multilevel disease had the lowest adjusted average PAQ summary score over time (63.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 60.8-65.5) and was significantly lower than aortoiliac (68.1; 95% CI, 64.8-71.4; P = .02) and femoral-popliteal (68.2; 95% CI, 65.8-70.6; P = .002) but not infrapopliteal (66.2; 95% CI, 60.5-72.0; P = .32). CONCLUSIONS Overall, patients with claudication had similar health status on presentation by level of disease, yet patients with isolated aortoiliac disease fared significantly better over time with regard to quality of life and PAQ scores. Subset analysis demonstrated that patients undergoing interventions for aortoiliac disease and multilevel disease, which were primarily endovascular procedures, appeared to improve health status more over time compared with femoral-popliteal and infrapopliteal interventions. No significant benefits were found with intervention for femoral-popliteal disease or infrapopliteal disease compared with medical management. Treatment of aortoiliac and multilevel disease for claudication should be considered by clinicians as it may represent the greatest potential benefit for improving overall health status in patients with PAD. Further studies evaluating intervention compared with medical management alone are needed to further evaluate this finding.

Abstract: SCK·CEN has developed a process to separate boric acid during and/or after evaporation of the liquid waste from pressurized light-water reactors. The key goal is to achieve higher waste volume reduction factors, while maintaining low activity discharge limits. An additional goal is to obtain purified boric acid for recycling. The process is based on the volatility of boric acid in steam. The liquid waste is treated in a semicontinuous evaporator, which operates preferentially at a higher temperature than the present evaporators. The stream loaded with boric acid is fed to a column for fractional condensation with partial reflux. In this way, one obtains a highly concentrated waste that contains all the radioactive and chemical impurities and little boron, a concentrated boric acid solution which can be reused, as well as a highly decontaminated effluent without boron. Abstract: We present a numerical method for the simulation of Czochralski growth. Our model is both global, considering conductive and radiative exchanges in the overall furnace, and time-dependent, including the heat capacity of all constituents, the motion of the solid/liquid interface, the varying interface radius and all geometrical changes induced by the lengthening of the crystal. The input parameters are the pulling rate and the heater power. However, calculations can be performed in an inverse way as well and yield the heater power as a response to a prescribed crystal shape. This latter possibility has been applied to the pulling of the head of a germanium crystal. The results show how to control the radius by modulating the heater power in order to avoid the generation of undesirable thermal stresses.

Abstract: Results are presented of an electron spin resonance (ESR) study carried out at cryogenic temperatures (4.2 K≲T≲35 K) at X‐ and K‐band frequencies of spin‐active defect centers created by ion implantation of 1014 As+ cm−2 at 60 or 80 keV into the SiO2 layer of Si‐SiO2 structures (dSiO2=104–130 nm). Observations were made on single‐crystal boron doped (001) Si wafers of resistivities ρ300 K=0.23 and 22 Ω cm, which had been thermally oxidized. In general, three well‐distinguished centers are observed; two signals, which originate from centers residing in the SiO2 layer, showed typical ‘‘glass’’ pattern line shapes. The first is definitely proven to be the E′ center, which constitutes the first clear experimental evidence of the E′ center in ion‐implanted Si/SiO2 structures. The second signal is shown to correspond very nearly with the ‘‘wet’’ oxygen‐related hole center (OHC) with zero crossing of the derivative spectrum dP/dB given by ga=2.0095. Abstract: Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. Abstract: For 4⪅T⩽22K, an analysis of the ESR linewidth of the Pb0 (°Si ≡ Si3) defect at the (111) Si/Si02 interface is presented. The spin-lattice relaxation time shows T1 ∼ T−2 which can be explained either by a phonon-bottleneck or the existence of a two-level system demonstrating that the spin-bath relaxation of Pb0 is governed by the near by a-Si02 layers, presenting herewith an alternative way of interpreting optical-irradiation influences on the Pb0 behaviour.

30. X and K band ESR study of the Pb interface centres in thermally oxidized p-type (001)Si wafers at low temperatures and influence of medium-dose As+ ion implantation

Abstract: Electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments have been carried out at cryogenic temperatures (4.2 ≲ T ≲ 35 K) and room temperatures at 9.0 and 20.9 GHz on the Pb0 and Pb1 (commonly referred to as Pb) spin-active defects residing at the Si/SiO2 interface. The ESR lineshapes were shown to display gaussian characteristics with inhomogeneous line broadenings amounting to 0.7 ± 0.1 and 0.2 ± 0.1 mT at K band for Pb0, and Pb1 respectively, whereas the oscillator strength of both signals followed the paramagnetic law (~ T−1) down to 4.2 K within experimental error. In general the observed Pb spectrum appeared to have fewer peaks than in other observations, at most displaying two distinguishable lines. Mostly however, only one somewhat broad signal (of measured peak-to-peak linewidth >Bptp ≅ 1.5 ± 0.15 mT and g = 2.0058 ± 0.0002 for $ B ‖ [001] was observed. By fully incorporating ΔBptp data for the first time in these observations and using computer simulations, it has been shown that the pervailing experimental spectrum always contains the signals from both kind of centers although mostly these are not separately discernable. Further, it emerged that the actual appearance of the experimental spectra is dirigated by the presence of a distribution of the SiIII unsaturated bond orientations around the ones normally prescribed by the Si crystallinity at the interface. It is found that for both centers this “angle” distribution predominantly occurs vertically with respect to the (001) interface plane. Ion implantation of 1014 As+ cm−2 at 60 or 80 keV into the oxide layer of the Si/SiO2 structure is shown to randomize the Pb dangling bond (DB) orientations (resulting in an isotropic g value behavior) but the effect of this is totally eliminated by subsequent annealing at 1000°C in N2 ambient. It is argued that ESR has become a very sensitive means to study the “purity” of interfacial DB positions with respect to the Si single-crystal prescribed positions and to enable the display of collective fingerprints of the interface defects.

31. Near Si/SiO2 interfacial layer formation of uncompensated P states in B-doped Si by thermal oxidation, evidenced by ESR at low T

Abstract: It has been found that thermal oxidation of B-doped (p-type) commercially obtained CZ-grown Si wafers of room temperature resistivity 8 ≲ ϱ RT ≲ 37 Ω cm creates P-rich near-interfacial Si layers. The piled-up P was detected via X- and K-band ESR carried out in the temperature range 1.5 ⩽ T ⩽ 77 K, displaying a spectrum which is shown to be identical to the one typical for 31P atoms dissolved in P-doped (n-type) Si. From signal-intensity calibrations and chemical-thinning sequences, the P was shown to be piled up in the Si/SiO2-interfacial top-Si layers revealing the existence of local bulk concentrations N ≳ 7.6×1016P atoms cm−3 in one sample, most of the phosphorus being accumulated in a 25 nm thick interfacial Si layer. For the other samples, even higher N values were derived. The observability by ESR of the piled-up P was subsequently shown to be allowed by the effective reversal of the semiconductor type, i.e. from p to n, of the interfacial Si layers by the high local P donor concentrations compared to the averaged B concentrations; surface charge induced band-bending effects are shown to be negligible. As to the physical origin of the P atoms, from several experimental facts and arguments the possibility of external input during thermal cycling was excluded. Instead, the P atoms are presumed to be inherently present as bulk impurities - thus referring to a non-negligible compensation ratio of the doped Si - the P being collected at the interface during thermal oxidation via vacancy-mediated diffusion, driven by the naturally-present interfacial strain field. Once the strain field has been released by an interfacial saturation concentration of P, the ordinary inwards-Si diffusing behaviour via the interstitialcy mechanism becomes dominant. Consequently, it is argued that P may diffuse via a dual mechanism.

32. Within-person associations between emotion regulation and negative affect in adolescents' daily life.

Abstract: Adolescence is marked by elevated levels of negative affect (NA) and is a crucial period for the development of emotion regulation (ER). To date, relatively little is known about how adolescents' daily use of different ER strategies (ERS) is associated with momentary affective experiences. To elucidate these dynamics, we investigated whether (a) within-person differences in using different ERS were related to momentary NA and positive affect, (b) ER variability (operationalized as between-strategy variability) was related to momentary affect, and (c) stressor intensity was a moderator herein. Data from two ecological momentary assessment studies were used: N Study1 = 89 Dutch adolescents (48% females, data collected in 2019) and N Study2 = 266 Belgian adolescents (42% females, data collected in 2021). Momentary affect and ERS use were measured eight times per day during 1 week (Study 1) or five times during 2 weeks (Study 2). Within-person associations were estimated using a series of univariate autoregressive (Lag-1) dynamic structural equation models. Results show that, of all the ERS examined, only distraction was associated with lower levels of momentary NA and higher levels of positive affect across both studies, whereas the opposite associations were found for rumination. Contrary to expectations, ER variability was associated with lower levels of momentary NA only when stressor intensity was low but with higher levels of NA when stressor intensity was high. Overall, findings have noteworthy implications for future research on affect dynamics in adolescents and reveal a more nuanced picture about the benefits of ER variability in daily life. 33. Does Context Matter? Daily Diary Study Exploring the Effects of Stressor Intensity and Perceived Controllability on the Relationship Between Emotion Regulation and Affect in Adolescents.

Abstract: Theoretical accounts emphasize the importance of context sensitivity in emotion regulation, yet research often neglects this. This study explored how adolescents' use of three emotion regulation strategies-cognitive reappraisal, distraction, and rumination-interacted with stressor intensity and perceived controllability to influence daily emotions. A total of 249 adolescents participated in a daily diary study (M age = 12.73, SD age = 0.78; 63.1% males). Adolescents reported their daily use of emotion regulation strategies, emotional states, and contextual factors. In high-intensity stress situations, reappraisal and distraction each showed associations with reductions in negative affect, whereas rumination was related to increases in negative affect. In low-intensity stress contexts, reappraisal was associated with decreases in positive affect, and no significant effects emerged for distraction or rumination. For perceived controllability, no impact on negative affect was found; however, positive affect increased in uncontrollable situations when levels of reappraisal and rumination were low. Overall, the findings underscore the importance of stressor intensity and perceived controllability, suggesting that distraction's effectiveness is less context-dependent than reappraisal and rumination. A total of 102 adolescents (M age = 14.10 years, SD age = 0.63; 50 males) completed the heartbeat counting task with adapted instructions to assess interoceptive accuracy, sensibility, and awareness. During a follow-up session, participants underwent a standardized stressful task, throughout which measures of negative affect and respiratory sinus arrythmia (RSA) were collected. Results from multilevel models indicated that adolescents with higher interoceptive accuracy reported less pronounced increases in negative affect during stress induction, and subsequently experienced a less steep decrease in negative affect during recovery, compared to those with lower accuracy. Regarding RSA, adolescents with higher interoceptive accuracy exhibited greater decreases in RSA from baseline to stress, while those with higher interoceptive awareness maintained higher RSA levels throughout the experiment. In contrast, individuals with higher interoceptive sensibility exhibited lower levels of RSA during the experiment. These findings add to the limited literature on interoception in adolescents by illuminating its role in emotional experiences, stress responses, and recovery processes. Our study suggests that examining distinct dimensions of interoception, along with physiological measures during stress and recovery, is crucial for understanding its beneficial or adverse effects in adolescence. 35. Should Adolescents Listen to Their Hearts? A Closer Look at the Associations Between Interoception, Emotional Awareness and Emotion Regulation in Adolescents.

Abstract: The aim of the current study was to replicate findings from prior work among adults showing that individuals with better interoceptive skills have more emotional awareness, and show better emotion regulation abilities, in a sample of adolescents and by relying on instructions that reduce the contamination of known confound variables. A total of 102 Belgian adolescents ( M age = 14.10 years, SD age = .63; 50 males) completed self-report questionnaires of emotional processes (FEEL-KJ and DERS) and the modified heartbeat counting task. From this task, interoceptive accuracy, interoceptive sensibility (confidence ratings), and interoceptive awareness scores (within-person correlations) were derived per participant. Results revealed no associations between the three dimensions of interoception and adolescents' levels of emotional awareness, adaptive, and maladaptive emotion regulation. The lack of associations which contrast some prior work with adults may be due to developmental differences. However, these might also support the low validity of the heartbeat counting task, or could be attributed to the measurement of the emotion measures (i.e., self-report). Future studies should, nevertheless, also test whether these non-significant results can be explained by the developmental differences in adolescents. 36. Always look on the bright side of life: Individual differences in visual attentional breadth for understanding temperament and emotion regulation in adolescents.

Abstract: Introduction: Cognitive-affective models of depression show that negative and positive emotionality differentially confer risk for depression through maladaptive and adaptive emotion regulation (ER) strategies respectively. Yet, no research has examined the mechanisms through which these temperament traits shape individual differences in ER. The current study explored the mediating role of attentional breadth for emotional information in the distinct pathways from temperament to ER strategies in adolescents., Methods: The hypotheses were tested in a selected sample of 71 adolescents ( M = 14.15, SD = 1.90; 62% girls) using a previously validated measure of visuospatial attentional breadth., Results: First, positive emotionality was positively associated with attentional breadth for positive stimuli and temperamental vulnerable adolescents showed deficits in the processing of positive stimuli when presented far from the center of the visual field. Second, attentional breadth towards neutral stimuli was positively related to adaptive ER strategies. Third, no evidence was found for the proposed mediation models. Abstract: Introduction: This study examined the moderating role of adaptive and maladaptive emotion regulation in the relationship between general perceived stress and depressive symptoms during the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown in March-April 2020 in Belgium, while controlling for past depressive symptoms in 2016., Methods: Participants were 110 adolescents (55% female; Mage = 16, SDage = 1.80) who filled out different questionnaires assessing maladaptive and adaptive emotion regulation strategies (ERS), perceived stress, and depressive symptoms., Results: Results revealed that only maladaptive ERS statistically significantly moderated the relationship between perceived stress and depressive symptoms. More specifically, the amount of perceived stress is positively associated with the level of depressive symptoms, especially in adolescents who use more maladaptive ERS., Conclusion: The repertoire of adaptive ERS might not be sufficient for adolescents to flexibly cope with a highly stressful situation such as the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. 38. Recent Advancements in Tracking Bacterial Effector Protein Translocation.

Abstract: Bacteria-host interactions are characterized by the delivery of bacterial virulence factors, i.e., effectors, into host cells where they counteract host immunity and exploit host responses allowing bacterial survival and spreading. These effectors are translocated into host cells by means of dedicated secretion systems such as the type 3 secretion system (T3SS). A comprehensive understanding of effector translocation in a spatio-temporal manner is of critical importance to gain insights into an effector's mode of action. Various approaches have been developed to understand timing and order of effector translocation, quantities of translocated effectors and their subcellular localization upon translocation into host cells. Recently, the existing toolset has been expanded by newly developed state-of-the art methods to monitor bacterial effector translocation and dynamics. In this review, we elaborate on reported methods and discuss recent advances and shortcomings in this area of tracking bacterial effector translocation.

Abstract: Background: Beer flavor stability is important to brewers as a result of the increased global demand for beer. Increasing export leads to prolonged periods of transportation and storage and causes fresh flavor deterioration. Therefore, the present study examined the effect of different temperatures in combination with vibrations on beer quality. Beer was exposed to vibrations (50 Hz, 15 m s -2 , simulating transport) at 5, 30 and 45 °C for 22, 38 and 90 h and (for half the samples) aged for 60 days at 30 °C., Results: The results obtained indicated decreased oxygen concentrations as a result of an elevated temperature and vibrations. There was no effect (P > 0.05) on color and a limited effect of temperature and vibrations on iso-α-acids. The parameters temperature and vibrations have a significant influence (P < 0.05) on aldehyde concentrations, namely total aldehydes, and especially '2-methylpropanal', '2-methylbutanal' and 'furfural'., Conclusion: The impact of vibrations on the aldehydes concentrations was substantial when subjected to an elevated temperature. Abstract: Over the past 30 years, there have been significant advancements in the field of nanomaterials. The possibility to use them in applications such as cancer treatment is extremely promising; however, the toxicity of many nanomaterials as well as the high costs associated with their use is still a concern. This paper aims to study the connection between nanomaterial toxicity and cost. This synergy may be interpreted as a different version of the classic "Prisoner's Dilemma" game, which in this case attempts to explain the possible outcomes of cooperation versus conflict between science advocating for the use of high-risk, possibly toxic materials due to their high returns, and society that might be dubious about the use of high-risk materials. In an effort to create diverse evaluation methodologies, this work uses a forecast horizon to evaluate the current status and expected future of the nanomaterials market. The historical progress of each market, toxicity information, and possible returns stemming from their use is taken into account to analyze the predictions. Abstract: Background: Nanotechnology has been in the limelight since its emergence and its products affect everyday lives. Nanomaterials are characterized by features such as size and shape, thus rendering their possible number essentially unlimited, which in turn makes them difficult to study and categorize regarding possible dangers. This work suggests that grouping could allow studying them with limited testing efforts without endangering safety., Methods: Initially, the materials are identified and grouped according to their applications in health/medicine, as well as on their environmentally-friendly potential. The materials are then categorized using various toxicity classification methods to identify those with highest risks and group them with others that demonstrate similar behavior., Results: The materials studied show promising uses in diagnostics, drug delivery, biosensors, water purification, oil spill cleaning, emission control and other fields. The toxicity risk assessment shows that the majority pose little to moderate risk, however there are certain materials that can be extremely hazardous or even cause death under specific circumstances. A risk mitigation plan was also developed., Conclusions: Nanomaterials applications, including drug delivery, cancer treatment, waste treatment, solar energy generation etc. can be very beneficiary, but at the same time, these materials can be extremely harmful or even cause death, thus making the need to prioritize research on high risk materials crucial. A clear regulatory framework that addresses both benefits and risks and communicates that information effectively should play an important part in European and worldwide efforts., General Significance: The risk analysis validated the impression that there is limited research on nanomaterial toxicity risks, which calls for a more organized approach. The framework outlined in this work can be utilized by researchers as well as government bodies, in order to form regulatory policies and adopt a universally accepted labeling system. 42. Reuse of bituminous pavements: A mini-review of research, regulations and modelling.

Abstract: Bituminous pavement can be recycled - even multiple times - by reusing it in new bituminous mixtures. If the mechanical properties of the binder get worse, this reclaimed asphalt is often used in the sub-structure of the road. Apparently, up till now, no end-of-life phase exists for the material. Actually, defining the end-of-life and the end-of-waste stage of a material is important for life cycle assessment modelling. Various standards and scientific studies on modelling life cycle assessment are known, but the crucial stages are not yet defined for reclaimed asphalt pavement. Unlike for iron, steel and aluminium scrap, at this moment, no legislative end-of-waste criteria for aggregates are formulated by the European Commission. More research is necessary in order to develop valuable end-of-life criteria for aggregates. This contribution is a mini-review article of the current regulations, standards and studies concerning end-of-life and end-of-waste of reclaimed asphalt pavement. The existing methodology in order to define end-of-waste criteria, a case study on aggregates and the argumentation used in finished legislative criteria are the basis to clarify some modelling issues for reclaimed asphalt material. Hence, this contribution elucidates the assignment of process environmental impacts to a life cycle stage as defined by EN15804, that is, end-of-life stage (C) and the supplementary information Module D with benefits and loads beyond the system boundary.
