Abstract

Context. With an orbital distance comparable to that of Saturn in the solar system, β Pictoris b is the closest (semi-major axis ≃9 au) exoplanet that has been imaged to orbit a star. Thus it offers unique opportunities for detailed studies of its orbital, physical, and atmospheric properties, and of disk-planet interactions. With the exception of the discovery observations in 2003 with NaCo at the Very Large Telescope (VLT), all following astrometric measurements relative to β Pictoris have been obtained in the southwestern part of the orbit, which severely limits the determination of the planet’s orbital parameters. Aims. We aimed at further constraining β Pictoris b orbital properties using more data, and, in particular, data taken in the northeastern part of the orbit. Methods. We used SPHERE at the VLT to precisely monitor the orbital motion of beta β Pictoris b since first light of the instrument in 2014. Results. We were able to monitor the planet until November 2016, when its angular separation became too small (125 mas, i.e., 1.6 au) and prevented further detection. We redetected β Pictoris b on the northeast side of the disk at a separation of 139 mas and a PA of 30° in September 2018. The planetary orbit is now well constrained. With a semi-major axis (sma) of a = 9.0 ± 0.5 au (1σ), it definitely excludes previously reported possible long orbital periods, and excludes β Pictoris b as the origin of photometric variations that took place in 1981. We also refine the eccentricity and inclination of the planet. From an instrumental point of view, these data demonstrate that it is possible to detect, if they exist, young massive Jupiters that orbit at less than 2 au from a star that is 20 pc away.

Abstract

Large surveys with new-generation high-contrast imaging instruments are needed to derive the frequency and properties of exoplanet populations with separations from ~5 to 300 au. A careful assessment of the stellar properties is crucial for a proper understanding of when, where, and how frequently planets form, and how they evolve. The sensitivity of detection limits to stellar age makes this a key parameter for direct imaging surveys. Aims. We describe the SpHere INfrared survey for Exoplanets (SHINE), the largest direct imaging planet-search campaign initiated at the VLT in 2015 in the context of the SPHERE Guaranteed Time Observations of the SPHERE consortium. In this first paper we present the selection and the properties of the complete sample of stars surveyed with SHINE, focusing on the targets observed during the first phase of the survey (from February 2015 to February 2017). This early sample composed of 150 stars is used to perform a preliminary statistical analysis of the SHINE data, deferred to two companion papers presenting the survey performance, main discoveries, and the preliminary statistical constraints set by SHINE. Methods. Based on a large database collecting the stellar properties of all young nearby stars in the solar vicinity (including kinematics, membership to moving groups, isochrones, lithium abundance, rotation, and activity), we selected the original sample of 800 stars that were ranked in order of priority according to their sensitivity for planet detection in direct imaging with SPHERE. The properties of the stars that are part of the early statistical sample wererevisited, including for instance measurements from the Gaia Data Release 2. Rotation periods were derived for the vast majority of the late-type objects exploiting TESS light curves and dedicated photometric observations. Results. The properties of individual targets and of the sample as a whole are presented. © ESO 2021. Abstract

The SHINE project is a 500-star survey performed with SPHERE on the VLT for the purpose of directly detecting new substellar companions and understanding their formation and early evolution. Here we present an initial statistical analysis for a subsample of 150 stars that are representative of the full SHINE sample. Our goal is to constrain the frequency of substellar companions with masses between 1 and 75 MJup and semimajor axes between 5 and 300 au. We adopt detection limits as a function of angular separation from the survey data for all stars converted into mass and projected orbital separation using the BEX-COND-hot evolutionary tracks and known distance to each system. Based on the results obtained for each star and on the 13 detections in the sample, we use a MCMC tool to compare our observations to two different types of models. The first is a parametric model based on observational constraints, and the second type are numerical models that combine advanced core accretion and gravitational instability planet population synthesis. Using the parametric model, we show that the frequencies of systems with at least one substellar companion are $23.0_{-9.7}^{+13.5}\%$, $5.8_{-2.8}^{+4.7}\%$, and $12.6_{-7.1}^{+12.9}\%$ for BA, FGK, and M stars, respectively. We also demonstrate that a planet-like formation pathway probably dominates the mass range from 1-75 MJup for companions around BA stars, while for M dwarfs, brown dwarf binaries dominate detections. In contrast, a combination of binary star-like and planet-like formation is required to best fit the observations for FGK stars. Using our population model and restricting our sample to FGK stars, we derive a frequency of $5.7_{-2.8}^{+3.8}\%$, consistent with predictions from the parametric model. Abstract

The planetary system discovered around the young A-type HR8799 provides a unique laboratory to: a) test planet formation theories, b) probe the diversity of system architectures at these separations, and c) perform comparative (exo)planetology. We present and exploit new near-infrared images and integral-field spectra of the four gas giants surrounding HR8799 obtained with SPHERE, the new planet finder instrument at the Very Large Telescope, during the commissioning and science verification phase of the instrument (July-December 2014). With these new data, we contribute to completing the spectral energy distribution of these bodies in the 1.0-2.5 $\mu$m range. We also provide new astrometric data, in particular for planet e, to further constrain the orbits. We used the infrared dual-band imager and spectrograph (IRDIS) subsystem to obtain pupil-stabilized, dual-band $H2H3$ (1.593 $\mu$m, 1.667 $\mu$m), $K1K2$ (2.110 $\mu$m, 2.251 $\mu$m), and broadband $J$ (1.245 $\mu$m) images of the four planets. IRDIS was operated in parallel with the integral field spectrograph (IFS) of SPHERE to collect low-resolution ($R\sim30$), near-infrared (0.94-1.64 $\mu$m) spectra of the two innermost planets HR8799d and e. The data were reduced with dedicated algorithms, such as the Karhunen-Lo\`eve image projection (KLIP), to reveal the planets. We used the so-called negative planets injection technique to extract their photometry, spectra, and measure their positions. Abstract

The Quebec Water Policy was launched in November 2002 in support of reform of the water governance. One of the government commitments is to gradually implement watershed-based management for 33 major watercourses located primarily in the St. Lawrence plain. At the local and regional levels, watershed organizations are responsible for implementing integrated management, from a sustainable-development perspective, by preparing a master plan for water (MPW), which will include watercourses, lakes, wetlands and aquifers. These watershed organizations rely on public consultation, as well as local and regional expertise, on the responsibilities for water of the municipalities and regional county municipalities of the territory, as well as those of the ministries and other government agencies. They are also required to observe national priorities regarding protection, restoration, and development of water resources and to comply with relevant guidelines, directives, standards, regulations, and legislation. The role of watershed organizations is to act as planning and consultation tables. Government representatives are present, on the initial process, as the facilitator and for scientific and technical support. They do not have, at this moment, any voting or decisional rights. After two years, integrated water management mobilized water stakeholders on watersheds and they are on their way to initiating their first MPW.

Abstract

We report a laboratory experiment to assess the performance and limitations of the four-quadrant phase mask coronagraph we proposed 2 years ago. A total flux rejection factor of 4400 was reached using off-the-shelf optical components. The peak intensity of the Airy pattern is correspondingly reduced by a factor of 44,000 with a stability of a few hours. In this paper, we discuss implications of this excellent result regarding the next generation of instruments for extrasolar planet detection.

Abstract

International audience; In the framework of exoplanet direct imaging, a few coronagraphs have been proposed to overcome the large flux ratio that exists between the star and its planet. However, there are very few solutions that gather in the same time broad band achromaticity, a small inner working angle (shortest angular distance for planet detection), a good throughput for the planet light, and a mature technical feasibility. Here, we propose to use a combination of chromatic Four Quadrant Phase Mask coronagraphs to achromatize the dephasing of this well-studied monochromatic coronagraph. After describing the principle of the technique, we present preliminary results for a compact prototype. Contrast larger than 10000 are reached with more than 250 nm of spectral bandwidth in the visible. Stability over time and effect of the filtering is also discussed.

Abstract

A large number of coronagraphs have been proposed to overcome the ratio that exists between the star and its planet. The planet finder of the Extremely Large Telescope, which is called EPICS, will certainly need a more efficient coronagraph than the ones that have been developed so far. We propose to use a combination of chromatic Four Quadrant Phase Mask coronagraph to achromatize the dephasing of the device while maintaining a high rejection performance. After describing this multi-stage FQPM coronagraph, we show preliminary results of a study on its capabilities in the framework of the EPICS instrument, the planet finder of the European Extremely Large Telescope. Eventually, we present laboratory tests of a rough prototype of a multi-stage four-quadrant phase mask. On one hand, we deduce from our laboratory data that a detection at the 10^-10 level is feasible in monochromatic light. Abstract

The system of four planets around HR8799 offers a unique opportunity to probe the physics and chemistry at play in the atmospheres of self-luminous young (~30 Myr) planets. We recently obtained new photometry of the four planets and low-resolution (R~30) spectra of HR8799 d and e with the SPHERE instrument (paper III). In this paper (paper IV), we compare the available spectra and photometry of the planets to known objects and atmospheric models (BT-SETTL14, Cloud-AE60, Exo-REM) to characterize the atmospheric properties of the planets. We find that HR8799d and e properties are well reproduced by those of L6-L8 dusty dwarfs discovered in the field, among which some are candidate members of young nearby associations. No known object reproduces well the properties of planets b and c. Nevertheless, we find that the spectra and WISE photometry of peculiar and/or young early-T dwarfs reddened by submicron grains made of corundum, iron, enstatite, or forsterite successfully reproduce the SED of these two planets. Our analysis confirms that only the Exo-REM models with thick clouds fit (within 2{\sigma}) the whole set of spectrophotometric datapoints available for HR8799 d and e for Teff = 1200 K, log g in the range 3.0-4.5, and M/H=+0.5. The models still fail to reproduce the SED of HR8799c and b. The determination of the metallicity, log g, and cloud thickness are degenerate. We conclude that an enhanced content in dust and decreased CIA of H2 is certainly responsible for the deviation of the properties of the planet with respect to field dwarfs. The analysis suggests in addition that HR8799c and b have later spectral types than the two other planets, and therefore could both have lower masses., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables, accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract

The performance of high contrast imaging systems is very often limited by the presence of static speckles in the point-spread function of the central source. Several techniques have already been proposed to discriminate a faint companion from these residual speckles. These techniques used different criteria to separate a speckle from a companion: polarization, spectral information or coherence. Here, we propose a new imaging device, the Self-Coherent Camera (SCC), that is based on the lack of coherence between the stellar light and the planet that is searched for. This SCC is a simple instrument that allows us to reach the fundamental limitation of the photon noise by calibrating the speckles in the recorded images. After the description of the general problem of discriminating speckles from planets, we will explain the principle of the SCC. Then, we will analyze the different limitations of this technique as well as the performance that can be reached with current telescopes.

Abstract

We present data from high-dispersion echelle spectra and simultaneous $uvby$ photometry for $��$~Doradus. These data were obtained from several sites during 1994 November as part of the MUSICOS-94 campaign. The star has two closely-spaced periods of about 0.75 d and is the brightest member of a new class of variable early F-type stars. A previously suspected third period, very close to the other two, is confirmed. Previous observations indicated that sudden changes could be expected in the spectrum, but none were found during the campaign. The radial velocities rule out the possibility of a close companion. The phasing between the radial velocity and light curve of the strongest periodic component rules out the starspot model. The only viable mechanism for understanding the variability is nonradial pulsation. We used the method of moments to identify the modes of pulsation of the three periodic components. These appear to be sectorial retrograde modes with spherical harmonic degrees, ($\ell, m$), as follows: $f_1$ = (3,3), $f_2$ = (1,1) and $f_4$ = (1,1). Abstract

We describe results from the December 1989 multi-site continuous observing campaign (MUSICOS 89 with 17 telescopes around the globe) dedicated to the study of active structures and flares on the RS CVn system HR1099=V711 Tau. Two exceptional white-light flares were detected on 14 and 15 December with remarkable photometric and spectral signatures during rise and decay. Equivalent colours, temperature excesses, projected areas (0.55 and 0.89 solar disc areas), radiative and kinetic energy budgets were derived for the two white-light flares. At IAU Colloq. 153, we presented the relation between Doppler imaged spots, extended emission and these giant flares, and discussed them in the context of models of magnetic interconnection and filament energy storage between the stars.

Abstract

The electronic camera built by the Meudon Camera Group was used during three observational shifts at the prime focus at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The instrument is described and its performances given. The camera is used with S 11 photocathodes saved in the detector during several months under the protection of an all-metal valve. 30 pl/mm are resolved on the photocathode and on standard observations, the RMS noise does not exceed 7 e-/h/pixel. All camera functions (high voltage, plate commutation, time of exposure, etc.) are fully under control of a Z80 microprocessor. A phosphor screen located in the same plane as the nuclear plates is used to check the electronic and optical focusing on the telescope. The first observations led to a limiting magnitude of MV=25.2 (S/N=5) in one hour, with a 1.4" seeing. Current seeing of 1" in Hawaii will give access to mV=25.6 in one hour, mB=26.4 in two hours and mU=25.5 in one hour. Some examples, taken from different observational runs, are presented.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses development of a new type of Lallemand camera. At the Imperial College Symposium, it was discussed to produce an electrostatic camera based on the Lallemand principle, but with a technology more suited to difficult operational conditions. The results obtained with a first prototype enabled researchers to begin fabrication of four-valve cameras. In this camera, the photocathodes are introduced into the camera following the Lallemand procedure. The valve is then closed tightly and the camera relieved of both its introduction appendages by pinching off two silver-plated copper tubes. The electronic tube with the photocathode may then stand as long as it is necessary before operation. In operation, the drum bearing the emulsions is attached under the valve unit, vacuum tightness being obtained by squashing an indium wire between camera and plate-holder flanges. Although nearly 100 closures were required to select the material and shape of the sealing parts, only 4 tests in the presence of the photocathode have been completed, with the last attempt being unsuccessful. It was found that the closing force was too high and the consequent slight deformation of the valve components finally prevented perfect leak tightness.

Abstract

The Quebec Water Policy was launched in November 2002 in support of reform of the water governance. One of the government commitments is to gradually implement watershed-based management for 33 major watercourses located primarily in the St. Lawrence plain. At the local and regional levels, watershed organizations are responsible for implementing integrated management, from a sustainable-development perspective, by preparing a master plan for water (MPW), which will include watercourses, lakes, wetlands and aquifers. These watershed organizations rely on public consultation, as well as local and regional expertise, on the responsibilities for water of the municipalities and regional county municipalities of the territory, as well as those of the ministries and other government agencies. They are also required to observe national priorities regarding protection, restoration, and development of water resources and to comply with relevant guidelines, directives, standards, regulations, and legislation. The role of watershed organizations is to act as planning and consultation tables. Government representatives are present, on the initial process, as the facilitator and for scientific and technical support. They do not have, at this moment, any voting or decisional rights. After two years, integrated water management mobilized water stakeholders on watersheds and they are on their way to initiating their first MPW.

17. Subwavelength surface-relief gratings for stellar coronagraphy.

Abstract

We present a new design of a phase mask coronagraph implemented with subwavelength diffractive optical elements consisting of optimized surface-relief gratings. Phase mask coronagraphy is a recent technique that seeks to accommodate both high dynamic and high angular resolution imaging of faint sources around bright astrophysical objects such as exoplanets orbiting their host stars. The original design we propose is a new, integrated, and flexible solution to the pi phase-shift chromaticity of the phase mask coronagraphs. It will allow broadband observations, i.e., shorter integration times and object characterizations, by means of spectroscopic analysis. The feasibility of the component manufacturing is also considered through a tolerance study.
