Here, we report the development of a homemade experimental setup to perform under vacuum an in situ study of the physical properties of bundles of single-walled carbon nanotubes intercalated with rubidium ions using electrical conductivity, X-ray absorption and Raman measurements. This set-up was successfully used at the SAMBA beamline at the Soleil synchrotron. The electrical resistance displays an important drop with the stoichiometry (intercalation time). The Raman radial breathing modes and the G-band of the nanotubes clearly indicate an important electron transfer. The G-band behaviour features a transition from semiconducting to metallic nanotubes, confirmed by the electrical resistance measurements as a function of the temperature after rubidium intercalation. This set-up can be used for the study of any type of extremely air sensitive materials.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments are usually carried out at very high and homogenous magnetic fields. However, portable systems have emerged in recent years at low fields, offering many advantages like easier maintenance and open design that permit us to imagine a variety of coil configurations in order to maximize the homogeneity of the static field B0 and the radio-frequency field B1. The wire winding distribution based on space harmonics suppression (SHS) of the cosine current density distribution offers new possibilities of producing homogenous static fields B0. In this work, an extension of the SHS method, allowing homogeneity enhancement and flexibility of the coil design, is presented. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated through the construction of homogenous magnetic field coils dedicated to a very low magnetic field (8 mT) 1H NMR spectrometer. The performance of these coils in terms of magnetic field intensity and homogeneity as well as self-heating behavior is compliant with in planta experiments for agronomic studies.

Background. Primary aortic thrombus is an uncommon entity and not frequently reported in the literature. Herein, we discuss the presentation and management of a patient with a primary thoracic mural thrombus. Case Summary. A 46-year-old female with past medical history of tobacco dependence presented for low-grade fever and sudden onset, severe right upper quadrant abdominal pain with associated nausea and vomiting. Computed tomography (CT) revealed an intraluminal polypoid filling defect arising from the isthmus of the aorta projecting into the proximal descending aorta and findings consistent with infarction of the spleen and right kidney. Infectious, autoimmune, hematologic, and oncologic work-up were all unyielding. The patient was started on heparin and later transitioned to apixaban 5 mg twice a day and 81 mg of aspirin daily. She was also counseled regarding smoking cessation. Two months follow-up CT revealed resolution of the thrombus. Patient had no further thromboembolic complications. Discussion. We present a unique case of primary aortic thrombus. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case managed successfully with a NOAC. This diagnosis is one of exclusion and through work-up should be completed. Our aim is to raise awareness of this condition and successful management with apixaban in low-risk patients.

Myxomas are the most common benign cardiac neoplasms in adults. The vast majority of cardiac myxomas arise from the left atrium near the fossa ovalis of the intra-atrial septum. There have been reports of myxomas arising from the ventricles accounting for about 5% of cases. In our literature review, we have found 55 reported cases of myxomas originating from the mitral valve reported in the adult population dating back to 1871. The majority of these cases presented with embolic complications or syncope. We present an incidental mitral valve myxoma which we excised in efforts to prevent debilitating complications.

The Covid-19 pandemic necessitated the opening of a dedicated inpatient unit for the management of cancer and Covid-19 patients in a cancer center. We report the support by the mobile palliative care team of team resilience in cancer work. The complexity of patient management required the implementation of multidisciplinarity which allowed to face adversity to provide better care in pandemic, then in daily life., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Masson SAS. Acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) is a common reason for admission to the hospital, and readmission is frequent. Multiple factors contribute to rehospitalizations, but inadequate assessment of volume status leading to persistent congestion is an important factor. We sought to determine if focused cardiac ultrasound (FCU) of the inferior vena cava (IVC), as a surrogate of volume status, would predict readmission of ADHF patients after index hospitalization. Patients admitted with a primary diagnosis of ADHF were prospectively enrolled. All patients underwent FCU of the IVC on admission and then daily. 82 patients were enrolled. Patients demonstrated improvement in heart failure physical examination findings and symptoms during the hospitalization. There was a reduction in the size of the IVC and a significant increase in patients with small collapsible vena cava. Logistic regression analysis of physical examination, patient symptoms, and IVC parameters at discharge demonstrated IVC collapsibility and patient reported dyspnea improvement as the only significant variables to predict readmission or emergency department visit. FCU assessment of IVC size and collapsibility may be useful in patients with ADHF to predict risk of being readmitted within 30 days of hospital discharge.

Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of death among women worldwide. Characterized by complex etiology and multi-level heterogeneity, its origins are not well understood. Intense research efforts over the last decade have furthered our knowledge by identifying multiple risk factors that are associated with the disease. However, it is still unclear how genetic heterogeneity contributes to tumor formation, and more specifically, how genome-level heterogeneity acts as the key driving force of cancer evolution. Most current genomic approaches are based on 'average molecular profiling.' While effective for data generation, they often fail to effectively address the issue of high level heterogeneity because they mask variation that exists in a cell population. In this synthesis, we hypothesize that genome-mediated cancer evolution can effectively explain diverse factors that contribute to ovarian cancer. In particular, the key contribution of genome replacement can be observed during major transitions of ovarian cancer evolution including cellular immortalization, transformation, and malignancy. First, we briefly review major updates in the literature, and illustrate how current gene-mediated research will offer limited insight into cellular heterogeneity and ovarian cancer evolution. We next explain a holistic framework for genome-based ovarian cancer evolution and apply it to understand the genomic dynamics of a syngeneic ovarian cancer mouse model. Finally, we employ single cell assays to further test our hypothesis, discuss some predictions, and report some recent findings.

The ability of different radiographic techniques to detect the presence of artificially created periapical lesions in mandibles of human cadavers was investigated. Conventional radiography was compared with direct digital imaging using the Digora system. Artificial lesions were created around the roots of molars in three stages: removal of lamina dura only, extension to cancellous bone, and involvement of cortical plate. Radiographs and digital images (gray scale, color, and reverse image) were obtained preoperatively and after each stage of bone removal. Images were scored on a 5-point scale by eight observers. For all image types, lesions were readily detectable after removal of lamina dura only, with increasing detectability associated with further bone removal (especially cortical plate involvement). Radiographs and gray-scale digital images were comparable at all stages, whereas color and reverse images were associated with a greater spread of diagnostic scores. Digital imaging did not enhance detectability of lesions.
