X.; Wolfgang, A.; Ziegler, C.; KESPRINT Team., We present the discovery and characterization of two transiting planets observed by TESS in the light curves of the young and bright (V = 9.67) star HD73583 (TOI-560). We perform an intensive spectroscopic and photometric space- and ground-based follow-up in order to confirm and characterize the system. We found that HD73583 is a young (∼500 Myr) active star with a rotational period of 12.08 ± 0.11 d, and a mass and radius of 0.73 ± 0.02 M⊙ and 0.65 ± 0.02 R⊙, respectively. HD 73583 b (Pb = 6.3980420+0.0000067−0.0000062 d) has a mass and radius of 10.2+3.4−3.1 M⊕ and 2.79 ± 0.10 R⊕, respectively, which gives a density of 2.58+0.95−0.81 gcm−3⁠. HD 73583 c (Pc = 18.87974+0.00086−0.00074 d) has a mass and radius of 9.7+1.8−1.7 M⊕ and 2.39+0.10−0.09 R⊕, respectively, which translates to a density of 3.88+0.91−0.80 gcm−3⁠. Both planets are consistent with worlds made of a solid core surrounded by a volatile envelope. Because of their youth and host star brightness, they both are excellent candidates to perform transmission spectroscopy studies. We expect ongoing atmospheric mass-loss for both planets caused by stellar irradiation. We estimate that the detection of evaporating signatures on H and He would be challenging, but doable with present and future instruments. © The Author(s) 2022. This paper introduces a new method for optimizing the efficiency of two planar coils for a wireless power transfer system, assuring a specific pre-defined efficiency over the entire given charging surface. The referred efficiency is calculated from the transmitter’s source to the receiver’s load. This study is based on rectangular shaped coils. The electrical parameters, coupling and efficiency of the system are calculated and optimized as function of their physical dimensions. Thus, taking those parameters into account a useful design tool is proposed here. One of many possible designs is presented as example, which proves by theoretical and simulation results that the receiver might be free-positioned over the surface of charging without losing efficiency. Results for a 13.56 MHz system show that more than 82 % of efficiency (load to transmitter coil) can be achieved for a 4 cm x4 cm receiver moving over a 12 cm x8 cm surface.

The following FPGA-based (Field Programmable Gate Array) experiences stem from a broader line of research investigating methodologies for scaling cognitive/intelligent architectures into limited-resource implementations. Some of these architectures were designed for solving problems involving abstract concepts and uncertain environments, without regarding resource requirements: their original implementations are cluster-based, PCbased or other. Commercial, embedded applications have afforded being independent from them for years. However, today there exists a drive towards new functionalities which put conventional technologies to their limit. From the point of view of the user, these functionalities stand, for instance, for HMI capable of interacting with the user in natural language, perception systems capable of detecting objects in the environment and reacting to their presence and automatic control systems capable of replacing human operation in complex scenarios. A representative field of application of these functionalities is the automotive industry. Active research is being carried out to develop highly dependable, low-cost real-time systems that may predict forthcoming accidents, may assess risk situations when driving or that may take control of the vehicle when collision is detected as inevitable (for example some PSSIS: Primary and Secondary Interaction Systems). From the point of view of the engineer, many of these functionalities involve complex tasks as object recognition, decision making and action planning, supported by enriched models of the environment and the system itself, capable of representing concepts, abstract properties and uncertainty. All of these tasks are carried out as part of the operation of existing cognitive architecture-based systems.

Estimating and forecasting suspended sediments concentrations in streams constitutes a valuable asset for sustainable land management. This research presents the development of a non-linear autoregressive exogenous neural network (NARX) for forecasting sediment concentrations at the exit of Francia Creek watershed (Valparaiso, Chile). Details are presented on input data selection, data splitting, selection of model architecture, determination of model structure, NARX training (optimization of model parameters), and model validation (hindcasting and forecasting). The study explored if the developed artificial neural network model is valid for forecasting daily suspended sediment concentrations for a complete year, capturing seasonal trends, and maximum and baseflow concentrations. Francia Creek watershed covers approximately 3.24 km2. Land cover within the catchment consists mainly of native and exotic vegetation, eroded soil, and urban areas. Input data consisting of precipitation and stream flow time-series were fed to a NARX network for forecasting daily suspended sediments (SST) concentrations for years 2013&ndash, 2014, and hindcasting for years 2008&ndash, 2010. Training of the network was performed with daily SST, precipitation, and flow data from years 2012 and 2013. The resulting NARX net consisted of an open-loop, 12-node hidden layer, 100 iterations, using Bayesian regularization backpropagation. Hindcasting of daily and monthly SST concentrations for years 2008 through 2010 was successful. Daily SST concentrations for years 2013 and 2014 were forecasted successfully for baseflow conditions (R2 = 0.73, NS = 0.71, and Kling-Gupta efficiency index (K-G) = 0.84). Forecasting daily SST concentrations for year 2014 was within acceptable statistical fit and error margins (R2 = 0.53, NS = 0.47, K-G = 0.60, d = 0.82). Forecasting of monthly maximum SST concentrations for the two-year period (2013 and 2014) was also successful (R2 = 0.69, NS = 0.60, K-G = 0.54, d = 0.84).

Access to safe, high quality water for consumption, agriculture, industry, and recreation is critically important. Continuous agricultural and mining activities have impaired the waters of the Grand Lake watershed in the central Great Plains region of the United States. The Grand Lake watershed encompasses portions of southeast Kansas, southwest Missouri, northwest Arkansas, and northeast Oklahoma, and drains into Grand Lake in northeast Oklahoma. The Cherry Creek watershed drains approximately 882.2 km2 (218,000 ac) of land in southeast Kansas and is a contributor of water to the Grand Lake watershed. This paper presents a water quality assessment in the Cherry Creek watershed, with an end toward mitigation of nonpoint source pollutants that are a major contributor to sediment and nutrient contaminants in Grand Lake. A hydrological model was developed using the Hydrological Simulation Program Fortran code and was updated, calibrated, and verified with measured data reported by US Geological Survey (USGS) and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The model was extended to simulate water quality within the study area. Nitrate (NO3−-N), total ammonia (TAM), total phosphorus (TP), and orthophosphate (PO43−-P) concentrations measured at the USGS stations were used to calibrate the model, and concentrations reported by KDHE at downstream locations were used to verify the model. Results indicate good performance of the hydrological model as tests of fitness were within levels established in previous studies (root-mean-squared-error to standard deviation ratio [RSR] 0.6; NS > 0.5). Nutrient measurements below the minimum quantifiable limit (MQL) hampered precise simulation of nutrient changes, though simulated values were acceptable in terms of ranges of contaminant concentration values and seasonal trends. The calibrated model was used to estimate the probability that nutrient levels would exceed established water quality criteria for rivers and streams. Concentration values of NO3−-N and TAM are shown to be low for an agricultural watershed: 75% of the NO3−-N and TAM concentrations are lower than 0.41 mg L−1. The probability of NO3−-N and TAM concentrations being toxic for aquatic communities is lower than 9%. Although model-estimated PO43−-P concentrations were low in numerical value (ranging from 0 to 2.60 mg L−1), they could still promote eutrophication according to the accepted 0.05 mg L−1 criteria for maximum PO43−-P concentrations in streams. Concentrations of PO43−-P in Cherry Creek have a 30.4% probability of exceeding that threshold. Extensive use of animal manure (primarily poultry) or manure from cattle grazing on pasture may account for the elevated levels of PO43−-P observed in the watershed. Although nutrient runoff from agricultural watersheds is anticipated to be a major contributor to elevated stream nutrient loads, these results indicate minimal contamination from Cherry Creek.

This paper presents details of a water quality model of the Mobile River watershed that estimates total suspended sediments at the outlet of the watershed. The model is capable of simulating Nitrate (NO3), Total Ammonia (TAM), and Total Suspended Sediments (TSS) for extended periods of time at a daily temporal resolution (1970-1995). The Hydrological Simulation Program Fortran is used for modeling the hydrological, nitrogenous constituents, and sediment processes. Based on the nutrient simulation and exploration of the effects of two management practices (filter strips and stream bank stabilization and fencing) on nutrient removal, the resulting sediment model is used to implement the most efficient nutrient management practice and explore its effects on TSS concentrations in the Mobile River. Results show that the implementation of the management practice “stream bank stabilization and fencing” to agricultural lands in sub-watersheds that had intense agricultural activities produced the highest reductions of NO3 concentration (up to 14.06%) and TAM concentrations (8.01%). Based on the nutrient simulation and identification of “stream bank stabilization and fencing” as the most efficient BMP for nutrient concentration reduction, the sediment model was used to explore its effects on TSS concentrations in the Mobile River. Implementing “stream bank stabilization and fencing” produced monthly median TSS concentration reductions ranging from 3.6% to 10.6% in the Mobile River.

Data provided by products 3B42 V7 (TRMM) and its successor 3IMERG (GPM) are compared with discrete rainfall information throughout the Chilean territory covering four macro hydroclimatic zones. Precipitation data was obtained from weather stations available on a daily basis from the 1930s to present. A total of 143 stations were chosen and rainfall estimates performed for years 2014 through 2018. Applying the same metrics we showed how GPM performances improve as the temporal aggregation increases. Several drawbacks were detected in the coastal areas, which were characterized by lower accuracy performances than internal areas. However, the 3IMERG product could be a strong source of data to study the impact that climatic disturbances have on the hydrologic cycle in the Central and South zones of Chile. Additionally, its offers a fundamental source of data for remote zones or areas where access is complicated to install weather stations.

Summary Vaca Muerta is one of the biggest unconventional finds of the last several years, located in the Neuquen Basin in Argentina, it is the second biggest shale gas reservoir and the fourth for shale oil in the world. To meet the objective of drilling horizontal wells with high performance, a roadmap focused in the fast introduction of technology and processes was established to achieve a fast learning curve. To improve drilling performance, the selection and implementation of directional tools and bit technologies through all sections was vital. To reduce flat times, a deep analysis of invisible lost time was used to find potential time saving areas. The implementation of batch drilling and offline cementing and logging operations led to huge time saving. The effective implementation of the technologies and processes roadmap along with the solutions found for the issues encountered, was the key of the success of the project. The results of the first pad drilled was 38.6 days in average time per well. For the second pad we reached an average well time of 23.7 days.

The design of retaining walls is increasingly present in engineering projects for urban areas, given their continuous development. In Brasilia and in the Federal District, many retaining walls are built in order to optimize space, such as in underground parking lots. These excavations need retaining works in order to maintain the terrain in place and to avoid any collapse. This paper has the aim of analyze numerically the behavior of “curtain piles” as retaining walls founded in tropical soils of the Federal District. The construction under study is characterized by a 13 m deep excavation, three levels of passive anchors, piles of 60 cm of diameter and 18 m long. It is founded in what is called “porous clay” of Brasilia and has instrumentation, which has yielded data displacements and stresses acting on the anchors to have the overall behaviour of the structure. Many laboratory tests were carried out to obtain the necessary soil parameters for the model. Plaxis software was selected as a numerical tool in order to simulate excavation steps, construction process, structure deformation and the presence of structural elements as piles and nails. The numerical model was developed and compared with the instrumentation data showing that the Mohr-Coulomb model used did not allow a reasonable prediction of the study case structure behavior.
