Traffic light schemes (TLSs) are commonly used to mitigate induced seismicity caused by subsurface fluid injection. Verdon and Bommer (J Seismol 25:301–326, 2021a) investigated the validity of the implicit assumptions that underpin the successful functioning of TLSs. In particular, they examined the extent to which magnitude jumps (sudden increases in event magnitudes from any preceding seismicity) and trailing events (continued increases in seismicity levels after the end of injection) took place in hydraulic fracturing (HF) induced seismicity sequences. Other technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), wastewater disposal (WWD) and natural gas storage (NGS) involve the gradual but long-term injection of large fluid volumes at low pressure. Hence, we might expect to see a different spatial and temporal evolution of magnitudes for seismicity induced by low-pressure, long-term (LPLT) injections compared to HF. In this study, we compile cases of LPLT injection-induced seismicity in order to examine their temporal evolution. We examine the occurrence of magnitude jumps, trailing events and onset times for seismicity after the initiation of injection. We find that few LPLT injections have produced trailing events, and that magnitude jumps are typically below 1.5 magnitude units. The timescale of event occurrence (relative to the onset of injection) is highly variable, likely reflecting site-specific conditions. For long-term injection, we observe a trend for the largest events to occur within the earlier part of each sequence, with magnitudes then stabilising, or even reducing, as injection continues. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the next record breaking event (NRBE) model as a method for forecasting induced event magnitudes, finding that this method performs reasonably well in most cases, but that in some cases the largest event significantly exceeds this model.

Between 15% and 30% of edge-localized-mode (ELM) heat flux can be deposited to regions outside the main divertor including the far scrape-off-layer (SOL), private flux region (PFR), and secondary divertor inner target. Analysis shown here demonstrates that type-I and small ELM plasmas are transported to the PFR and to the secondary inner divertor, which is magnetically isolated from the outer divertor, leading to well-defined heat flux profiles and with peak values that can surpass those at the secondary outer target. Such features are consistently observed for pedestal collisionalities from νe* ∼ 1.5 to νe* ∼ 3.9. Heat flux profiles of the examined ELM types feature rippled structures due to bursts in the outer far-SOL region but not on the secondary inner target, causing long decay lengths in the time-averaged ELM profiles. The contribution of each ELM type to the total time-averaged power deposited to the secondary divertor has been evaluated, showing that grassy ELMs contribute ∼8%, small ELMs ∼67%, and type-I ELMs ∼85%. These findings imply that small ELMs may yet pose a concern for future machines if some regions of the main wall are not designed to withstand significant heat and particle fluxes. Due to the low intra-ELM heat flux contribution, however, the grassy ELM regime is an attractive option for an ELMing scenario in future machines.

With opioid overdose rates doubling in the state of Kentucky over the last year, the opioid crisis is having a deadly impact on the state. Among Black individuals in particular, overdose rates have increased by nearly a third. As such, we must examine ways to effectively intervene to reduce deaths among this underrepresented population.The current study utilized a thematic analysis to examine factors influencing treatment perceptions and experiences among a sample of 39 Black adults with a recent history of opioid use.The primary themes highlighted in the study included "autonomous accessibility," "provider characteristics," and "relational support," which are aligned with Self-Determination Theory.We discuss how these themes relate to treatment initiation, engagement, and completion and discuss implications of this research in treatment for Black adults. Specifically, we discuss treatment considerations among Black adults who use prescription opioids such as ensuring autonomy and a collaborative approach to treatment, especially in mandated treatment, with strategies such as motivational interviewing. Further, we discuss the importance of nonjudgmental providers, gauging client preferences for racially, ethnically, and gender matched providers; and we assess support networks among clients and how these networks can be integrated or utilized in treatment planning.

The Surface Eroding Thermocouple (SETC) is a robust diagnostic utilized in DIII-D to provide fast, edge-localized modes (ELMs) resolved heat flux measurements, in particular in geometric regions that are too shadowed for traditional infrared thermography. In order to further investigate the power dissipation in the divertor region, a combination of flush-mounted and recessed SETCs was developed to assess the effect on surface heating from non-charged particles at the divertor target. Utilizing the Divertor Materials Evaluation System sample exposure platform, the first demonstration of the feasibility of using this new method to distinguish between the heat flux from charged particles and that from neutrals and radiative heating was achieved. This paper details the process of using the combination of flush SETCs and recessed SETCs to measure the multiple heat flux components at the divertor target and further discusses how to determine two important ratios, α (ratio of heat flux from charged particles deposit on recessed SETC to that deposit on flush SETC) and β (ratio of heat flux from non-charged particles deposit on recessed SETC to that deposit on flush SETC), in the estimation of the heat flux from non-charged particle sources. Using a time dependent ratio α, it was found that ∼50% of the total incident heat flux is attributable to the non-charged particles in the fully detached open divertor in DIII-D. Finally, the new application of similar SETC diagnostics in the Small Angle Slot divertor with a V-like configuration and partial tungsten coated surface (SAS-VW) is also introduced.

Sodium (Na+) exclusion is an important rootstock trait, which contributes to the overall salt tolerance of a grafted vine by limiting Na+ accumulation in both leaves and berries. A population of 68 hybrid Vitis genotypes, presumed to be from a cross between the rootstocks ‘K51-40’ and ‘140 Ruggeri’, have previously been investigated for their ability to exclude Na+. Here we report that the genotyping of this population with eight short sequence repeat (SSR) markers showed that ‘140 Ruggeri’ is the male parent of only 40 individuals. The rootstock ‘Schwarzmann’ is the male parent of 18 genotypes, with the remaining 10 genotypes being derived from unknown pollen sources. The role of HKT1;1 in Na+ exclusion in the 40 ‘K51-40’ × ‘140 Ruggeri’ hybrids has previously been reported, with four unique alleles of this gene present in this family, with each parent heterozygous for a dominant allele (EK or ER) linked with strong exclusion and for a recessive allele (eK or eR) linked with poor exclusion. In the present study, we found ‘Schwarzmann’ is also heterozygous for HKT1;1 alleles, consisting of dominant (EK) and recessive (eK) alleles identical to those of ‘K51-40’. The 18 ‘K51-40’ × ‘Schwarzmann’ hybrids were scored for inheritance of these alleles. When screened for the Na+ exclusion phenotype, two homozygous eKeK genotypes accumulated less Na+ than eKeR hybrids having ‘140 Ruggeri’ as the pollen parent. Thus, it appears that the recessive eR allele from ‘140 Ruggeri’ results in higher Na+ accumulation than the recessive eK allele from ‘K51-40’ or ‘Schwarzmann’, and this is supported by functional Na+ transport rates of the encoded HKT1;1 proteins previously reported.

It is estimated that pilot plants and reactors may experience rates of net erosion and deposition of solid plasma facing component (PFC) material of 103–105 kg yr−1. Even if the net erosion (wear) problem can be solved, the redeposition of so much material has the potential for major interference with operation, including disruptions due to so-called ‘unidentified flying objects (UFOs)’ and unsafe dust levels. The potential implications appear to be no less serious than for plasma contact with the divertor target: a dust explosion or a major UFO-disruption could be as damaging for an actively-cooled deuterium-tritium (DT) tokamak as target failure. It will therefore be necessary to manage material deposits to prevent their fouling operation. This situation appears to require a fundamental paradigm shift with regard to meeting the challenge of taming the plasma–material interface: it appears that any acceptable solid PFC material will in effect be flow-through, like liquid–metal PFCs, although at far lower mass flow rates. Solid PFC material will have to be treated as a consumable, like brake pads in cars. ITER will use high-Z (tungsten) armor on the divertor targets and low-Z (beryllium) on the main walls. The ARIES-AT reactor design calls for a similar arrangement, but with SiC cladding on the main walls. Non-metallic low-Z refractory materials such as ceramics (graphite, SiC, etc) used as in situ replenishable, relatively thin—of order mm—claddings on a substrate which is resistant to neutron damage could provide a potential solution for the main walls, while reducing the risk of degrading the confined plasma. Separately, wall conditioning has proven essential for achieving high performance. For DT devices, however, standard methods appear to be unworkable, but recently powder droppers injecting low-Z material ∼continuously into discharges have been quite effective and may be usable in DT devices as well. The resulting massive generation of low-Z debris, however, has the same potential to seriously disrupt operation as noted above. Powder droppers provide a unique opportunity to carry out controlled studies on the management of low-Z slag in all current tokamaks, independent of whether their protection tiles use low-Z or high-Z material.

The companion part A paper (Stangeby et al 2022) reports a number of independent estimates indicating that high-duty-cycle DT tokamaks starting with pilot plants will likely experience rates of net erosion and deposition of solid PFC, plasma facing component, material in the range of 103 to 104 kg yr−1, regardless of the material used. The subsequent redeposition of such large quantities of material has the potential for major interference with tokamak operation. Similar levels and issues will be involved if ∼continuous low-Z powder dropping is used for surface conditioning of DT tokamaks, independent of the material used for the PFC armor. In Stangeby et al (2022) (part A) it is proposed that for high-duty-cycle DT tokamaks, non-metallic low-Z refractory materials such as ceramics (graphite, SiC, etc) used as in situ replenishable, relatively thin—of order mm—claddings on a substrate which is resistant to neutron damage could provide a potential solution for protecting the main walls, while reducing the risk of degrading the confined plasma. Assessment of whether such an approach is viable will require information, much of which is not available today. Section 6 of part A identifies a partial list of major physics questions that will need to be answered in order to make an informed assessment. This part B report describes R&D needed to be done in present tokamaks in order to answer many of these questions. Most of the required R&D is to establish better understanding of low-Z slag generation and to identify means to safely manage it. Powder droppers provide a unique opportunity to carry out controlled studies on the management of low-Z slag in current tokamaks, independent of whether their protection tiles use low-Z or high-Z material.

Measuring the physical properties of geological materials is important for understanding geologic history. Yet there has never been an instrument with the purpose of measuring mechanical properties of rocks sent to another planet. The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover employs the Powder Acquisition Drill System (PADS), which provides direct mechanical interaction with Martian outcrops. While the objective of the drill system is not to make scientific measurements, the drill's performance is directly influenced by the mechanical properties of the rocks it drills into. We have developed a methodology that uses the drill to indicate the uniaxial compressive strengths of rocks through comparison with performance of an identically assembled drill system in terrestrial samples of comparable sedimentary class. During this investigation, we utilize engineering data collected on Mars to calculate the percussive energy needed to maintain a prescribed rate of penetration and correlate that to rock strength.

Diagenetic silica enrichment in fracture-associated halos that crosscut lacustrine and unconformably overlying aeolian sedimentary bedrock is observed on the lower north slope of Aeolis Mons in Gale crater, Mars. The diagenetic silica enrichment is colocated with detrital silica enrichment observed in the lacustrine bedrock yet extends into a considerably younger, unconformably draping aeolian sandstone, implying that diagenetic silica enrichment postdates the detrital silica enrichment. A causal connection between the detrital and diagenetic silica enrichment implies that water was present in the subsurface of Gale crater long after deposition of the lacustrine sediments and that it mobilized detrital amorphous silica and precipitated it along fractures in the overlying bedrock. Although absolute timing is uncertain, the observed diagenesis likely represents some of the most recent groundwater activity in Gale crater and suggests that the timescale of potential habitability extended considerably beyond the time that the lacustrine sediments of Aeolis Mons were deposited.

The structure of the edge plasma in a magnetic confinement system has a strong impact on the overall plasma performance. We uncover for the first time a magnetic-field-direction dependent density shelf, i.e., local flattening of the density radial profile near the magnetic separatrix, in high confinement plasmas with low edge collisionality in the DIII-D tokamak. The density shelf is correlated with a doubly peaked density profile near the divertor target plate, which tends to occur for operation with the ion B×∇B drift direction away from the X-point, as currently employed for DIII-D advanced tokamak scenarios. This double-peaked divertor plasma profile is connected via the E×B drifts, arising from a strong radial electric field induced by the radial electron temperature gradient near the divertor target. The drifts lead to the reversal of the poloidal flow above the divertor target, resulting in the formation of the density shelf. The edge density shelf can be further enhanced at higher heating power, preventing large, periodic bursts of the plasma, i.e., edge-localized modes, in the edge region, consistent with ideal magnetohydrodynamics calculations.

Urediniospore isolates of Puccinia triticina were obtained from wheat leaf collections made in three wheat-growing regions in Nebraska in 1997 and in four regions in 1998. Using 16 Thatcher lines that are near-isogenic for leaf rust resistance, 17 virulence phenotypes were found among 121 single uredinial isolates in 1997, and 42 virulence phenotypes were found among 178 isolates in 1998. The most prevalent phenotype in 1997 was MDRR (virulent on Lr1, 3, 3ka, 10, 11, 18, 23, 24, and 30). In 1998, virulence phenotypes MDRR and MDRM (virulent on Lr1, 3, 3ka, 10, 11, 23, 24, and 30) were the most prevalent. In both years, virulence frequency was above 80% to genes Lr1, 3, 3ka, 10, 11, 23, 24, and 30 and below 21% to Lr2a, 17, and 26. Virulence frequency to Lr2c was 37% in 1997 and 22% in 1998. No virulence was found to Lr9, 16, or 21 in either year. New virulence phenotypes were detected in 1998 that were not found in 1997. In 1998, virulence was less frequent on Lr2a, 2c, 3ka, 18, 24, and 26 and more frequent on Lr17 than in 1997.

DIII-D research is addressing critical challenges in preparation for ITER and the next generation of fusion devices through focusing on plasma physics fundamentals that underpin key fusion goals, understanding the interaction of disparate core and boundary plasma physics, and developing integrated scenarios for achieving high performance fusion regimes. Fundamental investigations into fusion energy science find that anomalous dissipation of runaway electrons (RE) that arise following a disruption is likely due to interactions with RE-driven kinetic instabilities, some of which have been directly observed, opening a new avenue for RE energy dissipation using naturally excited waves. Dimensionless parameter scaling of intrinsic rotation and gyrokinetic simulations give a predicted ITER rotation profile with significant turbulence stabilization. Coherence imaging spectroscopy confirms near sonic flow throughout the divertor towards the target, which may account for the convection-dominated parallel heat flux. Core-boundary integration studies show that the small angle slot divertor achieves detachment at lower density and extends plasma cooling across the divertor target plate, which is essential for controlling heat flux and erosion. The Super H-mode regime has been extended to high plasma current (2.0 MA) and density to achieve very high pedestal pressures (~30 kPa) and stored energy (3.2 MJ) with H 98y2 ≈ 1.6–2.4. In scenario work, the ITER baseline Q = 10 scenario with zero injected torque is found to have a fusion gain metric independent of current between q 95 = 2.8–3.7, and a lower limit of pedestal rotation for RMP ELM suppression has been found. In the wide pedestal QH-mode regime that exhibits improved performance and no ELMs, the start-up counter torque has been eliminated so that the entire discharge uses ≈0 injected torque and the operating space is more ITER-relevant. Finally, the high- (⩽3.8) hybrid scenario has been extended to the high-density levels necessary for radiating divertor operation, achieving ~40% divertor heat flux reduction using either argon or neon with P tot up to 15 MW.

Canadian contributions to International Polar Year (IPY) 2007–2008 were designed to improve the understanding of climate change impacts and adaptation and to gain insight into issues surrounding community health and well-being in Canada’s arctic. Fifty-two research projects, involving scientists, northern partners and communities, focused on the arctic atmosphere and climate, cryosphere, oceans, sea ice, marine ecosystems, terrestrial ecosystems, wildlife as well as human health and community well-being. Key research findings on these topics are presented in this special issue of Climatic Change. This introductory paper presents an overview of the international and Canadian IPY programs and a summary of Canadian IPY results, including progress made in data management and capacity building. The legacy of IPY in Canada includes expanded international scientific cooperation, meaningful partnerships with northern communities, and more northern residents with research training.

We report on recent DIII-D experiments that integrate edge localized mode (ELM) suppression using resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) with divertor heat flux reduction under radiating divertor conditions. Our results illustrate the limitations in maintaining ELM suppression at gas puffing levels that were representative of good puff and pump operation in previous experiments without RMP. The electron pressure gradient in the pedestal (∇Pe) increased steadily during gas puffing and ELMs returned once ∇Pe reached values consistent with the peeling–ballooning stability limit, as determined by edge stability analysis. Even with this return of ELMs, a radiating divertor with RMP generated higher levels of total radiated power (∼40%) than comparable standard ELMing discharges without RMP at the same density. Differences in the accumulation of the seed argon in the core plasma between RMP and non-RMP during puff and pump were less than 20%.

Measurements and simulations with the UEDGE code of radiated power, and ion saturation currents and power loads to the target plates have been compared for density scans in ohmic and low confinement mode plasmas in DIII-D, ASDEX Upgrade, and JET. Simulations including cross-field drifts and assuming elevated chemical sputtering yields of 3%–4% move the numerical solutions closer to many of the measurements compared to omitting the drifts and using the published Davis–Haasz yields. Adopting these assumptions the simulations reproduce the measured currents and powers, and their functional dependence on upstream density to within a factor of 2, with the exception of the ion currents to the low field side target in ASDEX Upgrade and the high field side target in JET. The applicability of using enhanced sputtering yields is discussed by comparing measured and simulated emission from low charge state carbon in the divertor regions.

As shown on DIII-D edge localized modes (ELMs) can be either completely eliminated or mitigated with resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) fields. Two infrared cameras, separated 105° toroidally, were used to make simultaneous measurements of ELM heat loads with high frame rates. Without the RMP fields ELMs display a variety of different heat load dynamics and a range of toroidal variability that is characteristic of their 3D structure. Comparing radial averages there is no asymmetry between two toroidal locations. With RMP-mitigated ELMs, the variability in the radially averaged power loads is significantly reduced and toroidal asymmetries in power loads are introduced. In addition to RMP ELM suppression scenarios an RMP scenario with only very small ELMs and very good confinement has been achieved.

The three-dimensional (3D) features of plasma edge profiles and wall interaction patterns induced by edge resonant magnetic perturbation fields (RMP) are discussed comparing TEXTOR and DIII-D. We show that the scrape-off layer (SOL) profiles and decay lengths depend the edge safety factor, the RMP base mode as well as on the plasma rotation during RMP application indicating modification of SOL transport by the 3D perturbation fields. This is compatible with channelling of particle and heat efflux along open perturbed field lines in the very edge of the plasma boundary into a completely re-arranged, helically striated 3D divertor footprint. The distribution of the measured divertor heat and particle fluxes at DIII-D match the vacuum modelled magnetic footprint topology in L-mode while in H-mode the striation width exceeds the modelled footprint width by 15–30%. This 3D structure of the measured heat and particle fluxes results in a new situation for the material erosion properties and initial quantification of the net-erosion within the 3D footprint shows in L-mode a 50% decrease of the chemical erosion yield and evidence for a comparably small 15-20% increase in physical sputtering. Extrapolation of these findings to ITER by vacuum modelling of the magnetic footprint for the actual ELM control coils shows a similar vacuum magnetic footprint topology as found at DIII-D during RMP ELM suppression. However, the open field lines escape the CFC covered ITER divertor area potentially transferring net-erosion characteristics from the CFC domain onto the Tungsten including so far unconsidered heat and particle loads on this sensitive material.

Stochastic boundaries in fusion devices have been investigated in tokamaks, stellarators and reversed field pinch experiments for many years. However, since edge localized modes (ELMs) have been successfully eliminated in H-mode plasmas at the DIII-D tokamak [1,2] with small, edge resonant magnetic perturbations, they have become a widely investigated topic in tokamaks. In DIII-D stochastic boundaries are produced by coils external to the plasma. The magnetic field there consists of field lines with very different connection lengths, which produces a three dimensional, heterogenous structure of stochastic volume. The most obvious manifestation of the perturbed plasma edge is the strike line splitting observable in heat and particle fluxes, which changes with collisionality. The interaction of the magnetic perturbation and the magnetic equilibrium is of a resonant nature and the structure of the stochastic volume is a strong function of q(95). This is observed as a modulation of e.g. electron temperature as measured by ECE or Thomson scattering. Previous olecranon fracture reports contain a small proportion of type 5 fractures, mostly treated with conservative therapy.To evaluate the clinical details and outcome of type 5 olecranon fractures in a large group of horses treated by tension band plate fixation and to compare results with other treatment methods.Medical records of 97 cases, including 32 (33%) classified as type 5, were reviewed. Subject details, history, radiographic findings, treatment and follow-up results (2-146 months post operatively) were recorded.Treatment included open reduction and internal fixation using a narrow or broad dynamic compression plate (n = 20), conservative therapy (n = 7) and euthanasia (n = 5). Long-term follow-up was available in 15 cases treated surgically, of which 2 were sound and in training, 11 sound and performing athletically and 2 unsound. Distal semilunar notch involvement, comminution or open status did not appear to affect prognosis.Internal plate fixation provides an excellent prognosis for an animal to be capable of athletic performance.Describing tension band plate fixation and results offers a method of fracture repair that should improve treatment and prognosis for type 5 olecranon fractures.

A qualitative as well as quantitative evaluation of experimentally observed plasma parameters in the detached regime proves to be difficult for several tokamaks. A series of ohmic discharges have been performed in ASDEX Upgrade and DIII-D at similar as possible plasma parameters and at different line averaged densities, {bar n}{sub e}. The experimental data represent a set of well diagnosed discharges against which numerical simulations are compared. For the numerical modeling the fluid-code B2.5 coupled to the Monte Carlo neutrals transport code EIRENE is used. Only the combined enhancement of effects, such as geometry, drift terms, neutral conductance, increased radial transport and divertor target composition, explains a significant fraction of the experimentally observed asymmetries of the ion fluxes as a function of {bar n}{sub e} to the inner and outer target plates in ASDEX Upgrade. The relative importance of the mechanisms leading to detachment are different in DIII-D and ASDEX Upgrade.

A conceptual model is introduced describing the 3D magnetic topology and nonlinear evolution of Type-I edge localized modes (ELMs), which immediately follow the initial linear peeling-ballooning growth phase. The model requires feedback amplification of stable and unstable invariant manifolds that increases the helical perturbation. The amplification process is caused by a rapid growth of field-aligned helical thermoelectric currents that flow through relatively short pedestal plasma flux tubes connecting the inner and outer divertor target plates. It is shown that the model qualitatively agrees with the formation of global field-aligned emission filaments and with fast IR heat flux splitting patterns of the inner and outer strike points observed experimentally. In addition, the model predicts an increase in the size of the ELMs as the pedestal collisionality drops. Experimental data and modeling results are presented supporting the basic conceptual elements of the model.

Edge localized modes (ELMs) are predicted to be a significant problem for ITER due to impulse heating of the divertor target plates. During low collisionality experiments on DIII-D where ELMs were suppressed using resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP), target plate profiles of particle flux ( J sat ), electron temperature ( T e ), and floating potential ( V f ) have been measured with Langmuir probes (LP) and compared to IRTV heat flux profiles. During ELM suppression, J sat and T e increase and the J sat profile broadens. A three-peak structure, most visible in the V f , agrees with the spacing and q 95 dependence of an n = 3 toroidal pattern predicted by the TRIP3D code. The heat flux calculated from Langmuir probe data (using sheath theory) is observed to get ∼2× larger during ELM suppression than between ELMs before the RMP is turned on. The sheath power transmission factor profile has been determined from IRTV and Langmuir probe data.

Maropitant (Cerenia), a selective neurokinin(1) receptor antagonist, was evaluated for safety and efficacy in treatment and prevention of acute vomiting due to various etiologies in dogs in a randomized clinical trial. Two-hundred seventy-eight dogs were enrolled from 29 veterinary hospitals. Two-hundred fifty-two were evaluable for efficacy, while 275 were evaluable for safety. A randomized block design was utilized (three maropitant- and one placebo-treated dog per block). Initial treatment was maropitant at 1 mg/kg body weight (0.45 mg/lb) or an equivalent volume of saline (placebo) administered subcutaneously. On the subsequent 1 to 4 days, maropitant or placebo (dependent on allocation) was administered subcutaneously or orally at approximate 24-h intervals as needed. Two natural, low K2O/Na2O, TTG tonalitic gneisses (one hornblende-bearing and the other biotite-bearing) were partially melted at 0.8–1.2 GPa (fluid-absent). The chief melting reactions involve the breakdown of the biotite and hornblende. The hornblende tonalite is slightly less fertile than the biotite tonalite, but melt volumes reach around 30% at 1,000°C. This contrasts with results of most previous work on more potassic TTGs, which generally showed much lower fertility, though commonly producing more potassic melts. Garnet is formed in biotite-bearing tonalitic protoliths at P > 0.8 GPa and at > 1.0 GPa in hornblende-bearing tonalitic protoliths. All fluid-absent experiments produced peraluminous granitic to granodioritic melts, typically with SiO2 > 70 wt.%. For the biotite tonalite, increasing T formed progressively more melt with progressively lower K2O/Na2O. However, the compositions of melts from the hornblende tonalite do not vary significantly with T. With increasing P, melts from the biotite tonalite become less potassic, due to the increasing thermal stability of biotite. For the hornblende tonalite, again there is no consistent trend. Fluid-absent melting of sodic TTGs produces melts with insufficient K2O to model the magmas that formed the voluminous, late, potassic granites that are common in Archaean terranes. Reconnaissance fluid-present experiments at 0.6 GPa imply that H2O-saturated partial melting of TTGs is also not a viable process for producing magmas that formed these granites. The protoliths for these must have been more potassic and less silicic. Nevertheless, at granulite-facies conditions, sodic TTGs will produce significant quantities of broadly leucogranodioritic melt that will be more potassic than the protoliths. Upward abstraction of this melt would result in some LILE depletion of the terrane. Younger K-rich magmatism is unlikely to represent recycling of TTG crust on its own, and it seems most likely that evolved crustal rocks and/or highly enriched mantle must be involved.

Lake-wide zooplankton surveys are critical for documenting and understanding food web responses to ecosystem change. Surveys in 2003 and 2008 during the binational intensive field year in Lake Ontario found that offshore epilimnetic crustacean zooplankton declined by a factor of 12 (density) and factor of 5 (biomass) in the summer with smaller declines in the fall. These declines coincided with an increase in abundance of Bythotrephes and are likely the result of direct predation by, or behavioral responses to this invasive invertebrate predator. Whole water column zooplankton density also declined from 2003 to 2008 in the summer and fall (factor of 4), but biomass only declined in the fall (factor of 2). The decline in biomass was less than the decline in density because the average size of individual zooplankton increased. This was due to changes in the zooplankton community composition from a cyclopoid/bosminid dominated community in 2003 to a calanoid dominated community in 2008. The increase in calanoid copepods was primarily due to the larger species Limnocalanus macrurus and Leptodiaptomus sicilis. These cold water species were found in and below the thermocline associated with a deep chlorophyll layer. In 2008, most of the zooplankton biomass resided in or below the thermocline during the day. Increased importance of copepods in deeper, colder water may favor Cisco and Rainbow Smelt over Alewife because these species are better adapted to cold temperatures than Alewife.

Aim To produce a statistical stratification of the European environment, suitable for stratified random sampling of ecological resources, the selection of sites for representative studies across the continent, and to provide strata for modelling exercises and reporting. Location A ‘Greater European Window’ with the following boundaries: 11 ° W, 32 ° E, 34 ° N, 72 ° N. Methods Tw enty of the most relevant available environmental variables were selected, based on experience from previous studies. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to explain 88% of the variation into three dimensions, which were subsequently clustered using an ISODATA clustering routine. The mean first principal component values of the classification variables were used to aggregate the strata into Environmental Zones and to provide a basis for consistent nomenclature. Results The Environmental Stratification of Europe (EnS) consists of 84 strata, which have been aggregated into 13 Environmental Zones. The stratification has a 1 km 2 resolution. Aggregations of the strata have been compared to other European classifications using the Kappa statistic, and show ‘good’ comparisons. The individual strata have been described using data from available environmental databases. The EnS is available for noncommercial use by applying to the corresponding author. Main conclusions The Environmental Stratification of Europe has been constructed using tried and tested statistical procedures. It forms an appropriate stratification for stratified random sampling of ecological resources, the selection of sites for representative studies across the continent and for the provision of strata for modelling exercises and reporting at the European scale.

As part of a study of carbon–tritium co-deposition, we carried out an experiment on DIII-D involving a toroidally symmetric injection of 13CH4 at the top of a LSN discharge. A Monte Carlo code, DIVIMP-HC, which includes molecular breakup of hydrocarbons, was used to model the region near the puff. The interpretive analysis indicates a parallel flow in the SOL of M∥ ∼ 0.4 directed toward the inner divertor. The CH4 is ionized in the periphery of the SOL and so the particle confinement time, τc, is not high, only ∼5 ms, and about 4X lower than if the CH4 were ionized at the separatrix. For such a wall injection location, however, approximately 60–75% of the CH4 gets ionized to C+, C2+, etc., and is efficiently transported along the SOL to the inner divertor, trapping hydrogen by co-deposition there.

The Advanced Limiter Test (ALT) project is the focus of a fruitful and intense International Energy Agreement collaboration on TEXTOR. The pump limiter is a mechanical boundary that is laid out for taking the full heat load of TEXTOR, namely 8 MW (assuming 2 MW radiated power) for 10 s, and provides a pumping efficiency of at least 5% of the working gas. This layout is adopted from the requirements of a fusion reactor: It is mandatory to remove both the full power that is convected to the limiter or divertor and the helium ash that is generated in the fusion process. In order to obtain pumping for all gases, the ALT-II is equipped with turbomolecular pumps. A short description of ALT-II is given, and the power and particle fluxes to the limiter surface and into the exhaust scoops are discussed. Requirements of the helium removal rate for a reactor and relevant measurements are discussed, and particle removal and the power distribution to the limiters are treated. Related topics of the ALT-II program were hydrogen recycling and the measurement of turbulence-induced anomalous particle transport in the plasma edge.

Low aspect ratio plasmas in devices such as the mega ampere spherical tokamak (MAST) are characterized by strong toroidicity, strong shaping and self fields, low magnetic field, high beta, large plasma flow and high intrinsic E × B flow shear. These characteristics have important effects on plasma behaviour, provide a stringent test of theories and scaling laws and offer new insight into underlying physical processes, often through the amplification of effects present in conventional tokamaks (e.g. impact of fuelling source and magnetic geometry on H-mode access). The enhancement of neoclassical effects makes MAST ideal for the study of particle pinch processes and neoclassical resistivity corrections, which can be assessed with unique accuracy. MAST data have an important influence on scaling laws for confinement and H-mode threshold power, exerting strong leverage on the form of these scaling laws (e.g. scaling with aspect ratio, beta, magnetic field, etc). The high intrinsic flow shear is conducive to transport barrier formation by turbulence suppression. Internal transport barriers are readily formed in MAST with both co- and counter-NBI, and electron and ion thermal diffusivities have been reduced to the ion neoclassical level. The strong variation in toroidal field (~ × 5 in MAST) between the inboard and outboard plasma edges, provides a useful test of edge models prompting, for example, a comparison of inboard and outboard scrape-off-layer transport to highlight magnetic field effects. Low aspect ratio plasmas are also an ideal testing ground for plasma instabilities, such as neoclassical tearing modes, edge localized modes (ELMs) and Alfven eigenmodes, which are readily generated due to the supra-Alfvenic ion population. Examples of how MAST is providing new insights into such instabilities (e.g. ELM structure) are described.

This work investigates the potential roles played by the scrape-off-layer current (SOLC) in MHD activity of tokamak plasmas, including effects on stability. SOLCs are found to be an integral part of the MHD activity, with a propensity to flow in a non-axisymmetric pattern and with magnitude potentially large enough to play a role in the MHD stability. Candidate mechanisms that can drive these SOLCs are identified: (a) non-axisymmetric thermoelectric potential, (b) electromotive force from MHD activity, and (c) flux swing, both toroidal and poloidal, of the plasma column. Other potential magnetic consequences of the SOLC are identified: (a) its error field can introduce complications in feedback control schemes for stabilizing MHD activity, and (b) its non-axisymmetric field can be falsely identified as an axisymmetric field by the tokamak control logic and in equilibrium reconstruction. The radial profile of an SOLC observed during a quiescent discharge period is determined, and found to possess polarity reversals as a function of radial distance.

The apancreatic state secondary to resective surgery for chronic pancreatitis is associated with a high rate of late morbidity and mortality that is due, in part, to endocrine insufficiency. Resective procedures should, therefore, be used very selectively. Over the last 2 decades we have seen a shift from extensive distal resections to limited proximal resections. This is because of the lowering of the operative mortality of pancreatic head resection and its better results in pain relief, while preserving in situ the body and tail of the gland with its metabolic functions. Islet autotransplantation and segmental pancreatic autotransplantation were introduced in 1977 and 1978, respectively. Over 150 and 25 cases of these operations have been reported, respectively. Both techniques are evolving with a goal to improve results. Procedures placing the graft in the iliac fossa and anastomosing the pancreatic duct to the jejunum are now favored over groin placement and duct occlusion. Islet autotransplants achieve a higher yield of islet cells and decrease the exocrine impurity of the preparation. Both methods can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes mellitus, and when diabetes mellitus does occur, it is frequently easier to manage. The long-term function of the grafts appears to be dependent on the beta-cell mass available in the diseased pancreas, the loss of cells related to the transplant procedure, and the characteristics of gradual loss of function from the type of transplant used. Although extensive pancreatic resections are occasionally required, the possibility of autotransplantation should be considered in those patients.
