Pre-synchronization has been evaluated as a method to improve synchrony of ovulatory follicles before fixed-time AI (FTAI). The objective was to compare FTAI results in beef cows from two protocols that utilize pre-synchronization. Blood samples were collected on d-14 (d0=CIDR removal) to determine progesterone concentration at the start of synchronization (P4start: ≥1ng/mL=high, < 1ng/mL=low). In a subset (n=1,032), an additional blood sample was taken between d-21 and -29 to determine cyclicity. Cows (n=1,119), from 21 herds, were grouped by days postpartum and age and randomly assigned to one of two protocols. Cows assigned to the PG 6-day CIDR protocol (PG6d) received prostaglandin F2α (PG) on d-9, CIDR insertion and GnRH on d-6, and CIDR removal and PG on d0. Cows assigned to the 7&7 Synch protocol (7&7) were administered PG and CIDR insertion on d-14, GnRH on d-7, CIDR removal and PG on d0. For both protocols, FTAI occurred coincident with GnRH 66 h after second PG. Pregnancy was determined by transrectal ultrasonography 30-40 d following FTAI. The GLIMMIX procedure of SAS (9.4) was used to detect differences in estrus response and pregnancy success with herd included as a random variable. Estrus response (0 to 66 h) was influenced by treatment (P< 0.01; PG6d=60±5% and 7&7=74±4%), Body Condition Score (P< 0.01), cycling status (P=0.03), P4start (P< 0.01), and a P4start by treatment interaction (P< 0.001; PG6d-highP4=62±6%, PG6d-lowP4=58±6%, 7&7-highP4=84±3%, 7&7-lowP4=60±6%). Pregnancy success was influenced by estrus expression (P< 0.01; estrus=38±4% and no estrus=62±6%), and a treatment by P4start interaction (P=0.04; PG6d-highP4=58±5%, PG6d-lowP4=39±7%, 7&7-highP4=49±5%, 7&7-lowP4=55±8%) but was not influenced by treatment (P=0.45; PG6d=49±4% and 7&7=52±4%). In conclusion, effectiveness of pre-synchronization method depends on a cows’ physiological status at the beginning of the protocol. The 7&7 protocol increased estrus response compared to PG6d, but there was no difference in pregnancy success.

It has been reported that plasma serine protease inhibitor (SERPINA5) and dystroglycan (DAG1) are loosely attached to the sperm and SERPINA5 can also be present on sperm tails. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether SERPINA5 and/or DAG1 could be used as a fertility marker in dairy bulls. Frozen semen from dairy bulls (n=19) were evaluated for concentration of SERPINA5 and DAG1 and percentage of sperm tail labeled for SERPINA5 (SERPINA5-tail) by immunofluorescence in a minimum of 200 sperm cells per bull in two different ejaculates. Semen was evaluated for total motility, progressive motility, and viability. Semen was used for in vitro embryo production (~150 oocytes/bull). Bull fertility was classified by two methods, sire conception rates [SCR - High-SCR ( >1.0) or Low-SCR (< -4.0)] and the ratio of embryos that developed into a blastocyst (BL) from those that had cleaved (CL) as Good (BL/CL≥38.5%) or Poor (BL/CL< 38.5%). The GLIMMIX procedure of SAS was used to evaluate fertility classification with SCR, BL/CL, and the interaction in the model with bull as a random effect. Progressive motility, CL, SERPINA5 and DAG1 concentration, and SERPINA5-tail did not differ (P≥0.14) among SCR and BL/CL classifications or their interaction. There was no difference (P>0.33) in total motility between High-SCR and Low-SCR or BL/CL classification; however, the interaction was significant (P=0.02; High-SCR/Good 54.9±2.8%, High-SCR/Poor 39.4±5.4%, Low-SCR/Good 44.8±4.5%, Low-SCR/Poor 52.03±3.2%). High-SCR bulls had decreased BL (P=0.03; 30.6±1.6%, 35.8±1.4%, respectively) and tended to have decreased BL/CL ratio (P=0.10; 38.1±2.0%, 42.9±1.8%, respectively) compared with Low-SCR bulls. In summary, DAG1 and SERPINA5 do not seem to be a putative fertility marker. In vitro embryo production is not a good predictor of SCR, since High-SCR and Low-SCR bulls may have Good or Poor in vitro embryo developments.

Damage to the bovine corpus luteum (CL) has been reported following modified-live virus vaccination (MLV). The objective of this study was to investigate the degree of luteal apoptosis after MLV or inactivated vaccine (IV) administration at time of artificial insemination. Beef females were estrous synchronized and on d 0 were vaccinated with a MLV or IV after being transrectally ultrasounded to record presence and location of dominant follicles and CL. Thirteen cows (MLV, n=7; IV, n=6) were selected on d 10-13 across treatment based on dominant follicle size and estrus expression for ovariectomy. Ovaries were obtained and CL were frozen in OCT and sectioned for immunohistochemistry analysis. At the time of ovary collection, some MLV animals had two CL. These were characterized into old or new CL, relative to if ovulation had occurred in response to the synchronization protocol or afterward due to an abnormal cycle, respectively. For immunohistochemistry analysis, two nonconsecutive sections were evaluated for apoptosis using a TUNEL staining kit (ab66110) according to manufacturer’s instructions, with the modification of DAPI being used as a cell marker. Two random fields of view from each section were photographed with a Keyence BZ-X810 microscope and were evaluated for number of total and apoptotic cells. The GLIMMIX procedure of SAS was utilized to analyze percentage of apoptotic cells with image included as a random effect. Percentage of apoptotic cells were affected by treatment (P < 0.0001). MLV-new CL had the greatest percentage (35.56 ± 5.5%) of luteal cell apoptosis, while MLV-old CL (7.05 ± 4.6%) and IV (4.24 ± 4.9%) were similarly decreased. In summary, a greater degree of apoptosis in new CL which formed after an abnormal cycle following MLV administration indicates the ability of MLV to induce estrous cycle dysfunction and extend its effects to luteal cell development and function.

We study inelastic collisions between CaF molecules and $^{87}$Rb atoms in a dual-species magneto-optical trap. The presence of atoms increases the loss rate of molecules from the trap. By measuring the loss rates and density distributions, we determine a collisional loss rate coefficient $k_{2} = (1.43 \pm 0.29) \times 10^{-10}$ cm$^{3}$/s at a temperature of 2.4 mK. We show that this is not substantially changed by light-induced collisions or by varying the populations of excited-state atoms and molecules. The observed loss rate is close to the universal rate expected in the presence of fast loss at short range, and can be explained by rotation-changing collisions in the ground electronic state., 14 pages, 6 figures. We prepare mixtures of ultracold CaF molecules and Rb atoms in a magnetic trap and study their inelastic collisions. When the atoms are prepared in the spin-stretched state and the molecules in the spin-stretched component of the first rotationally excited state, they collide inelastically with a rate coefficient of $k_2 = (6.6 \pm 1.5) \times 10^{-11}$ cm$^{3}$/s at temperatures near 100~$��$K. We attribute this to rotation-changing collisions. When the molecules are in the ground rotational state we see no inelastic loss and set an upper bound on the spin relaxation rate coefficient of $k_2 < 5.8 \times 10^{-12}$ cm$^{3}$/s with 95% confidence. We compare these measurements to the results of a single-channel loss model based on quantum defect theory. The comparison suggests a short-range loss parameter close to unity for rotationally excited molecules, but below 0.04 for molecules in the rotational ground state., 9 pages, 6 figures. Understanding frequency and variation of cave-exiting activity after arousal from torpor of hibernating bats is important for bat ecology and conservation, especially considering white-nose syndrome. In winter from 2011 to 2018, we acoustically monitored, and counted in hibernacula, two species of conservation concern—western small-footed myotis (Myotis ciliolabrum) and Townsend’s big-eared bats (Corynorhinus townsendii)—in 9 caves located in important habitat for these species in western North America. We investigated if cave-exiting activity differed by species, cave, number of hibernating bats, moon phase, and weather variables. Both species exited hibernacula during all winter months, but most activity occurred in March followed by November. Although we counted almost 15 times more Townsend’s big-eared bats during hibernacula surveys, we documented western small-footed myotis exiting caves 3 times more than Townsend’s big-eared bats. Cave-exiting activity increased with increasing number of hibernating bats, but more so for western small-footed myotis. Both species of bats were active during warm weather and low wind speeds. Western small-footed myotis were more active during colder temperatures, higher wind speeds, and greater change in barometric pressure than Townsend’s big-eared bats. Our results provide a long-term dataset of cave-exiting activity after arousal from torpor during hibernation for these species before the arrival of white-nose syndrome.

We present a spatially resolved H ii region study of the gas-phase metallicity, ionization parameter, and interstellar medium (ISM) pressure maps of six local star-forming and face-on spiral galaxies from the TYPHOON program. Self-consistent metallicity, ionization parameter, and pressure maps are calculated simultaneously through an iterative process to provide useful measures of the local chemical abundance and its relation to localized ISM properties. We constrain the presence of azimuthal variations in metallicity by measuring the residual metallicity offset Δ(O/H) after subtracting the linear fits to the radial metallicity profiles. We, however, find weak evidence of azimuthal variations in most of the galaxies, with small (mean 0.03 dex) scatter. The galaxies instead reveal that H ii regions with enhanced and reduced abundances are found distributed throughout the disk. While the spiral pattern plays a role in organizing the ISM, it alone does not establish the relatively uniform azimuthal variations we observe. Differences in the metal abundances are more likely driven by the strong correlations with the local physical conditions. We find a strong and positive correlation between the ionization parameter and the local abundances as measured by the relative metallicity offset Δ(O/H), indicating a tight relationship between local physical conditions and their localized enrichment of the ISM. Additionally, we demonstrate the impact of unresolved observations on the measured ISM properties by rebinning the data cubes to simulate low-resolution (1 kpc) observations, typical of large IFU surveys. We find that the ionization parameter and ISM pressure diagnostics are impacted by the loss of resolution such that their measured values are larger relative to the measured values on sub-H ii region scales.

The objective of this study was to determine factors impacting abundance of pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) after embryo transfer. Cows were synchronized using the 7-d CO-Synch+CIDR® protocol and grouped by estrus expression 48h after prostaglandin (d0) [Estrual (PC): n = 198; Non-estrual: n = 406]. Non-estrual cows were administered GnRH and randomly assigned to Estradiol treatment (E2: n=202; 0.1mg estradiol 17-β) or no treatment (NC: n = 204). In vivo produced embryos were transferred on d7, with grade, stage, and flush balanced across treatments. Circulating concentrations of estradiol and progesterone were determined on d0 and d7, respectively. Abundance of PAGs was determined on d24 and d26. Cows that were pregnant on d30 were grouped by age (H: 2, C: >2 years) and subjected to analysis. Correlations were analyzed using PROC CORR in SAS, while PAGs were analyzed using PROC GLIMMIX with treatment, age, year, sire, and embryo grade and stage as fixed effects. Abundance of PAGs on d24 was influenced by treatment (P = 0.01; PC=0.75±0.09, E2=0.59±0.09, NC=0.56±0.08), age (P < 0.01; H=0.75±0.09, C=0.52±0.08), year (P < 0.0001; 2019=0.42±0.08, 2020=0.84±0.09), and sire (P = 0.02; A=0.49±0.12, B=0.62±0.09, C=0.47±0.11, D=0.77±0.08, E=0.83±0.21), but not embryo grade (P = 0.89) or stage (P = 0.40). There was a negative correlation between d0 estradiol and d24 PAGs (P < 0.0001, r=-0.34), and a positive correlation between d7 progesterone and d24 PAGs (P < 0.0001, r=0.36). On d26, PAGs tended to differ by treatment (P = 0.09; PC=2.43±0.20, E2=2.33±0.21, NC=2.03±0.20). Age (P = 0.02; H=2.48±0.22, C=2.05±0.16), and sire (P = 0.0007; B=2.01±0.20, D=2.52±0.17) influenced PAGs, but embryo grade (P = 0.33) and stage (P = 0.32) did not on d26. Sire was associated with PAGs, and presumably embryo attachment, but not pregnancy rate. Increased progesterone concentrations on d7 were correlated with earlier attachment as measured by PAGs. Estrus expression prior to d0 may enhance earlier attachment of the fetal/maternal interface, and supplemental estradiol on d0 may improve attachment by d26 when ovulation is induced. Performance parameters of an electric discharge excited, supersonic flow CO laser operated with significant amounts of air species in the laser mixture is studied experimentally and by kinetic mode...

Eight short-range, open-terrain SF6 tracer tests in low wind speeds were conducted during Phase 2 of Project Sagebrush using continuous releases. Four tests were made during very unstable conditions in July and August 2016, and four during very stable conditions in October 2016. All tests featured 10-min averaging and 1-Hz sampling of tracer concentrations together with an extensive suite of meteorological measurements. We find that the uncertainty in well-mixed daytime measurements of tracer concentrations, using the absolute value of the relative percentage difference in collocated duplicate samplers, approaches a downwind limit of about 7–8%. Concentration variability in collocated sampling, due to stochastic factors and independent of measurement uncertainty, increases the total observational uncertainty closer to the source from about 20% (daytime) to 40% (very stable conditions). Longer averaging periods moderately reduce the concentration variability. The data indicate that the large increase in concentration variability is linked with the suppression of turbulent mixing, small eddy length scales, and meandering in very stable conditions. These results should be considered when comparing observations with model predictions in evaluations.

A field study was conducted of flows in the Birch Creek Valley in eastern Idaho. There is a distinct topographic constriction in the Birch Creek Valley that creates two subbasins: an upper and lower valley. The data were classified into one of three groups based on synoptic influence (weak/absent, high wind speeds, and other evidence of synoptic influence). Gap flows commonly developed downwind of the constriction in association with the weak/absent group but also occurred in association with the two synoptic groups suggesting the potential for more diverse origins. In general, the frequency and strength of gap flows appeared to be linked to the development of the requisite thermal regime and minimization of any synoptically driven southerly winds that would suppress outflows. Gap flows were characterized by high wind speeds with jetlike vertical profiles along the axis of the lower valley. For all three groups the morning transition in the upper valley and western sidewall usually proceeded slightly ahead of the lower valley, consistent with the principles of the topographic amplification factor. The persistence of southerly winds in the lower valley past evening transition inhibited the development of gap flows, promoted strong nighttime inversions, and delayed the onset of morning transition relative to the upper valley. Nocturnal temperature inversions in the lower valley were largely eliminated with the onset of strong gap flows resulting in earlier morning transitions there. The form for a method of predicting gap flow wind speeds is proposed.

A chemical flow reactor is used to study the vibrational population distribution of CO produced by a reaction between carbon vapor generated in an arc discharge and molecular oxygen. The results demonstrate formation of highly vibrationally excited CO, up to vibrational level v = 14, at low temperatures, T = 400–450 K, with population inversion at v = 4–7, in a collision-dominated environment, 15–20 Torr. The average vibrational energy per CO molecule formed by the reaction is 0.6–1.2 eV/molecule, which corresponds to 10–20% of reaction enthalpy. The results show feasibility of development of a new CO chemical laser using carbon vapor and oxygen as reactants.

We demonstrate a robust method of resolving the star-formation and AGN contributions to emission lines using two very well known AGN systems: NGC 1365, and NGC 1068, using the high spatial resolution data from the TYPHOON/PrISM survey. We expand the previous method of calculating the AGN fraction by using theoretical-based model grids rather than empirical points. The high spatial resolution of the TYPHOON/PrISM observations show evidence of both star formation and AGN activity occurring in the nuclei of the two galaxies. We rebin the data to the lower resolutions, typically found in other integral field spectroscopy surveys such as SAMI, MaNGA, and CALIFA. The results show that when rebinned from the native resolution of TYPHOON (< 200 pc/pixel) to 1 kpc/pixel, the effects include a roughly 3 kpc increase in the radius of measured AGN activity, and a factor of 2 to 7 increase in the detection of low surface brightness features such as shocks. All of this information is critical, because information on certain physical processes may be lost at varying resolutions. Organochlorine pesticides are routinely used in agricultural processes across the United States. Compared to surrounding areas, Illinois ranks as one of the highest users of triazine herbicides due to corn and soybean production. These pesticides have been detected in dietary sources and drinking water, thus leading to risks to human health. With conflicting reports as to whether pesticides play a role in tumor metastasis, we examined the migration rate for cancerous (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and normal (MCF-10A) breast cells after exposure to six different pesticides using an in vitro scratch assay. Physiological concentrations of two insecticides (chlorpyrifos and resmethrin) and four herbicides (acetochlor, atrazine, cyanazine, and simazine) were applied to the cells for up to 72 hours and the ability of treated cells to regrow over a wounded area was assessed in 24 hour increments. Interestingly, significant differences in recovery after exposure to these compounds were not observed for any pesticide tested. However, reductions in recovery percentages were observed when comparing pesticide exposure to 17β-estradiol, a known trophic hormone for many breast cancers, in a cell type-dependent manner. Thus, although statistically significant increases in migration could be observed after estrogen exposure, short-term exposure to pesticides did not increase cell migration in this wound assay.

Recent developments in the study of very high energy non-equilibrium fluid flows are reviewed. These are flows of molecular gases which exhibit substantial degrees of mode disequilibrium, specifically high energy in molecular vibrational and electronic modes, and high electron energies when the gases are weakly ionized. In contrast, the modes of molecular translation and rotation remain at lower energies. Attention is focused on high density, collision-dominated gases. Studies in two systems are presented: A small wind tunnel where an M = 5 steady air flow over small models is produced, and a flowing carbon monoxide gas laser, exhibiting very high energy loading of the vibrational quantum states. The development of non-intrusive optical diagnostics to measure vibrational and electronic state populations and rotational/translational mode temperatures in the flows, with high spatial and temporal resolution, is presented. Kinetic modeling and experimental validation studies in these environments are also discussed.

A small-scale Mach 5 blow down wind tunnel, with ample access for optical diagnostics and ability to generate steady-state nonequilibrium flows, has been designed and operated. The wind tunnel uses transverse repetitively pulsed nanosecond discharge, fully overlapped with a transverse DC discharge and operated at high plenum pressures (P0=0.5-1.0 atm) to load internal energy modes of nitrogen and oxygen molecules. The discharge remains stable at energy loadings of up to ~0.1 eV/molecule in nitrogen (discharge power up to 2.5 kW). The wind tunnel generates nonequilibrium nitrogen and air flows with steady-state run time of 5-10 seconds, translational / rotational temperature of T0~300-400 K, and estimated upper bound nitrogen vibrational temperature of Tv0~2,000 K. Internal energy mode disequilibrium in the flow is controlled by injecting nitric oxide, hydrogen, or water vapor into the subsonic flow between the discharge section and the nozzle throat. The effect of energy mode disequilibrium is studied in a flow over a cylinder model placed in the Mach 5 test section. The flow field in the supersonic test section is well predicted by a 3-D compressible Navier-Stokes flow code, indicating good flow quality. The supersonic flow field over the model is visualized by schlieren imaging and NO PLIF imaging, using a burst mode laser operated in the vicinity of 226 nm, at a pulse repetition rate of 10-20 kHz. The laser was operated in the injection-seeded mode, generating narrow linewidth (~0.1 cm -1 ) output for single-line NO excitation in the flow. Nitric oxide was either injected into the flow in the plenum or generated in a repetitively pulsed nanosecond discharge in dry air. Both single-pulse PLIF images and images integrated over 10-50 laser pulses have been obtained. Two single-line NO PLIF images on a NO(X,v˝=0→A,v´=0) transition are used for measurements of 2-D temperature distributions in nitrogen flows in the supersonic test section. Another single-line NO PLIF image on a NO(X,v˝=1→A,v´=1) transition is used to estimate NO vibrational temperature behind the bow shock, TV(NO)=550 ± 100 K. The NO vibrational temperature increases when the energy loading in the discharge is increased. Kinetic modeling calculations indicate that low NO vibrational temperature is due to fairly low vibrational energy loading per nitrogen molecule in the discharge. Schlieren images of a supersonic flow over the cylinder model demonstrate that the shock stand-off distance is reduced by approximately 5% when the discharge in the wind tunnel is in operation and water vapor or hydrogen are injected into the flow between the discharge section and the nozzle throat. This effect is attributed to additional heating of the flow in the plenum during relaxation of vibrationally excited nitrogen in the presence of water vapor or hydrogen.

Picosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering is used for measurement of nitrogen vibrational distribution function in the plenum of a highly nonequilibrium Mach 5 wind-tunnel incorporating a high-pressure pulser– sustainer discharge. First-level vibrational temperatures of the order of 2000K are achieved in the 300 torr non-selfsustained plasma discharge generated by a high E=n ( 300 Td) nanosecond-pulsed discharge, which provides ionization in combination with an orthogonal low E=n ( 10 Td) dc sustainer discharge, which efficiently loads the nitrogen vibrational mode. It is also shown that operation with the nanosecond-pulsed plasma alone results in significant vibrational energy loading, withTv N2 of the order of 1100K.Downstream injection ofCO2, NO, andH2 results in vibrational relaxation, demonstrating the ability to further tailor the vibrational energy content of the flow. N2-NO vibration–vibration andN2-H2 vibration–translation rates inferred from these data agreewell with previous literature results to within the uncertainty in rotational-translational temperature.

Concentration variability in the fast-response tracer dataset for continuous, near-surface, point source releases in the urban core from the Joint Urban 2003 field study is analyzed. Concentration variability for conditionally and unconditionally sampled time series is characterized by probability densities, concentration fluctuation intensity, skewness, and kurtosis. Significant day-night differences in plume dispersion are observed. Relative to daytime, nighttime plumes were more likely to have reduced concentration fluctuation intensities, higher normalized surface concentrations, suppressed vertical mixing, and a greater prevalence of Gaussian-like distributions rather than log-normal or mixed mode distributions. This was in spite of the similar stability and turbulence conditions in the urban core for day and night. The potential roles of flow meander and thermal stability in explaining these differences are examined. Probability densities of concentration are found to be a strong function of fluctuation intensity. There are few differences in probability densities between day and night when classified by fluctuation intensity. There are no appreciable differences between conditional and unconditional probability densities and only small differences between conditional and unconditional sampling statistics relative to the larger differences usually observed in more homogeneous settings. Fluctuation intensity, skewness, and kurtosis are higher for the daytime experiments, and closer to the source, but show little difference between conditional and unconditional results over most of their range of values. The log-normal distribution provides a better overall fit to a broader range of the dataset than the exponential or clipped-normal distributions.

A roadway toxics dispersion study was conducted at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to document the effects on concentrations of roadway emissions behind a roadside sound barrier in various conditions of atmospheric stability. The homogeneous fetch of the INL, controlled emission source, lack of other manmade or natural flow obstructions, and absence of vehicle-generated turbulence reduced the ambiguities in interpretation of the data. Roadway emissions were simulated by the release of an atmospheric tracer (SF6) from two 54 m long line sources, one for an experiment with a 90 m long noise barrier and one for a control experiment without a barrier. Simultaneous near-surface tracer concentration measurements were made with bag samplers on identical sampling grids downwind from the line sources. An array of six 3-d sonic anemometers was employed to measure the barrier-induced turbulence. Key findings of the study are: (1) the areal extent of higher concentrations and the absolute magnitudes of the concentrations both increased as atmospheric stability increased; (2) a concentration deficit developed in the wake zone of the barrier with respect to concentrations at the same relative locations on the control experiment at all atmospheric stabilities; (3) lateral dispersion was significantly greater on the barrier grid than the non-barrier grid; and (4) the barrier tended to trap high concentrations near the “roadway” (i.e. upwind of the barrier) in low wind speed conditions, especially in stable conditions.

This paper demonstrates significant potential of the use of high-voltage, nanosecond pulse duration, high pulse repetition rate discharges for aerospace applications. The present results demonstrate key advantages of these discharges: 1) stability at high pressures, high flow Mach numbers, and high-energy loadings by the sustainer discharge, 2) high-energy fractions going to ionization and molecular dissociation, and 3) targeted energy addition capability provided by independent control of the reduced electric field of the direct current sustainer discharge. These unique capabilities make possible the generation of stable, volume-filling, low-temperature plasmas and their use for high-speed flow control, nonthermal flow ignition, and gasdynamic lasers. In particular, the crossed pulsersustainerdischargewasusedformagnetohydrodynamic flowcontrolincoldM � 3 flows,providing firstevidenceof cold supersonic flow deceleration by Lorentz force. The pulsed discharge (without sustainer) was used to produce plasma chemical fuel oxidation, ignition, and flameholding in premixed hydrocarbon–air flows, in a wide range of equivalence ratios and flow velocities and at low plasma temperatures, 150–300 � C. Finally, the pulser-sustainer discharge was used to generate singlet oxygen in an electric discharge excited oxygen–iodine laser. Laser gain and output power are measured in the M � 3 supersonic cavity.

A stable ethylene/oxygen/argon flame is sustained and nearly complete combustion is achieved in the combustion chamber of an M = 3 supersonic nozzle, at a stagnation pressure of P 0 =1 atm. Ultraviolet and visible emission is detected both from the combustion chamber and from the M = 3 flow of combustion products. Temperature in the combustor, inferred from the visible emission spectra, is To = 2000 ± 200 K. Electron density in M = 3 flow of combustion products has been measured using Thomson discharge n, = 1.4 ± 0.2·10 8 cm -3 , at an ionization fraction of n e /N = (0.65 ± 0.15) · 10 -9 . This corresponds to an electron density of n e0 = 2.2 ·10 9 cm -3 in the combustor. The chemi-ionization current measured in the M = 3 flow is found to be proportional to the equivalence ratio in the combustor. The time-resolved chemi-ionization current is in very good correlation with the visible emission from ethylene-air and propane-oxygen-argon flames in the combustor at unstable combustion conditions. The results show that nearly all electrons can be removed from the supersonic flow of combustion products by applying a moderate transverse electric field. No effect of electron removal on visible emission has been detected. A similar result was obtained for nitric oxide β bands and cyanogen violet band emission, when nitric oxide was injected into the combustion product flow.

A chemical flow reactor has been used to study the vibrational population distribution of carbon monoxide produced by a reaction between vapor-phase carbon generated in an arc discharge and oxygen, to determine feasibility of extracting the chemical energy released from this reaction by laser radiation. Additionally, a supersonic flow, electric discharge excited CO laser has been developed and characterized over a range of operating conditions. The same supersonic laser apparatus can be adapted to produce population inversion via oxidation of vapor-phase carbon, generating vibrationally excited CO. Resultant laser power and spectra are compared with the predictions of a kinetic model of a supersonic flow CO laser.

The paper presents results of a high-pressure, non-self-sustained crossed discharge–M = 3 supersonic laser cavity operation. A stable and diffuse pulser–sustainer discharge in O2–He flows is generated at pressures of up to P0 = 120 Torr and discharge powers of up to 2.1 kW. The reduced electric field in the dc sustainer discharge ranges from 0.6 × 10−16 to 1.2 × 10−16 V cm2. Singlet delta oxygen (SDO) yield in the discharge, up to 5.0–5.7% at the flow temperatures of 400-420 K, was inferred from the integrated intensity of the (0, 0) band of the O2(a 1Δ → X 3Σ) infrared emission spectra calibrated using a blackbody source. The yield increases with the discharge power and remains nearly independent of the O2 fraction in the mixture (in the 10–20% range). Static pressure and temperature measurements in the supersonic cavity show that a steady-state M = 3 flow in the cavity can be sustained for up to 20 s, at the flow temperature of T = 120 ± 15 K. The results suggest that the measured SDO yield exceeds the threshold yield at the cavity temperature by up to a factor of 2.5. PLIF iodine vapour visualization in the supersonic cavity, which showed the presence of large-scale structures, suggests the need to improve iodine vapour mixing with the main oxygen–helium flow.

The paper presents results of plasma assisted combustion experiments in premixed hydrocarbon–air flows excited by a low-temperature transverse repetitively pulsed discharge plasma. The experiments have been conducted in methane–air and ethylene–air flows in a wide range of equivalence ratios, flow velocities, and pressures. The plasma was generated by a sequence of high-voltage (∼10 kV), short pulse duration (∼50 ns), high repetition rate (up to 50 kHz) pulses. The high reduced electric field during the pulse allows efficient electronic excitation and molecular dissociation. On the other hand, the extremely low duty cycle of the repetitively pulsed discharge, ∼1/500, greatly improves the discharge stability and helps sustaining diffuse and uniform nonequilibrium plasma. Generating this repetitively pulsed plasma in premixed hydrocarbon–air flows results in ignition and flameholding, occurring at low plasma temperatures, 140–300 °C, inferred from the nitrogen second positive band system spectra. At these conditions, the reacted fuel fraction, measured by the FTIR absorption spectroscopy, is up to 80%. The experiments demonstrate significant methane and ethylene conversion into CO, CO2, and H2O even at the conditions when there is no flame detected in the test section. At these conditions, fuel oxidation occurs due to plasma chemical reactions, without ignition. This provides additional evidence for the nonthermal fuel oxidation triggered by plasma-generated radicals.

The gas-phase Boudouard disproportionation reaction between two highly vibrationally excited CO molecules in the ground electronic state has been studied in optically pumped CO. The gas temperature and the CO vibrational level populations in the reaction region, as well as the CO 2 concentration in the reaction products have been measured using FTIR emission and absorption spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that CO 2 formation in the optically pumped reactor is controlled by the high CO vibrational level populations, rather than by CO partial pressure or by flow temperature. The disproportionation reaction rate constant has been determined from the measured CO 2 and CO concentrations using the perfectly stirred reactor (PSR) approximation. The reaction activation energy, 11.6 ± 0.3 eV (close to the CO dissociation energy of 11.09 eV), was evaluated using the statistical transition state theory, by comparing the dependence of the measured CO 2 concentration and of the calculated reaction rate constant on helium partial pressure. The disproportionation reaction rate constant measured at the present conditions is k f = (9 ± 4) × 10 −18 cm 3 /s. The reaction rate constants obtained from the experimental measurements and from the transition state theory are in good agreement.

This paper offers a reconsideration of the date of composition, structure and character of the history of Valerius Antias. Ancient testimony establishes c. 80–60 BC as the date of composition, and attested book numbers show that the bulk of the work was devoted to the recent past. Antias did invent freely, but the extent of his inventions may not have been as great as commonly supposed. He also carried out archival research, particularly in the record of senatorial decrees, and for the Middle Republic used this material to construct an annual framework for his narrative. As a result, Antias' history had greater amplitude of treatment than those of his predecessors, which accounts for the extent of Livy's debt to him.

This paper presents results of singlet oxygen generation experiments in a high-pressure, non-self-sustained crossed discharge. The discharge consists of a high-voltage, short pulse duration, high repetition rate pulsed discharge, which produces ionization in the flow, and a low-voltage dc discharge which sustains current in a decaying plasma between the pulses. The sustainer voltage can be independently varied to maximize the energy input into electron impact excitation of singlet delta oxygen (SDO). The results demonstrate operation of a stable and diffuse crossed discharge in O2–He mixtures at static pressures of at least up to P0 = 380 Torr and sustainer discharge powers of at least up to 1200 W, achieved at P0 = 120 Torr. The reduced electric field in the positive column of the sustainer discharge varies from E/N = 0.3 × 10 −16 to 0.65 × 10 −16 Vc m 2 , which is significantly lower than E/N in self-sustained discharges and close to the theoretically predicted optimum value for O2(a 1 �) excitation. Measurements of visible emission spectra O2(b 1 � → X 3 �) in the discharge afterglow show the O2(b 1 �) concentration to increase with the sustainer discharge power and to decrease as the O2 fraction in the flow is increased. Rotational temperatures inferred from these spectra in 10% O2–90% He flows at P0 = 120 Torr and mass flow rates of ˙ m = 0.73–2.2 g s −1 are 365–465 K. SDO yield at these conditions, 1.7% to 4.4%, was inferred from the integrated intensity of the (0,0) band of the O2(a 1 � → X 3 �) infrared emission spectra calibrated using a blackbody source. The yield remains nearly constant in the discharge afterglow, up to at least 15 cm distance from the discharge. Kinetic modelling calculations using a quasi-one-dimensional nonequilibrium pulser–sustainer discharge model coupled with the Boltzmann equation for plasma electrons predict gas temperature rise in the discharge in satisfactory agreement with the experimental measurements. However, the model overpredicts the O2(a 1 �) yield by a factor of 2–2.5, which suggests that the model’s description of nonequilibrium O2–He plasma kinetics at high pressures is not quite adequate. Results are presented of nonequilibrium rf plasma-assisted combustion experiments in premixed air-fuel flows. The experiments have been conducted in methane-air, ethylene-air, and CO-air mixtures. The results show that large volume ignition by the uniform and diffuse rf plasma can be achieved at significantly higher flow velocities (up to u = 25 m/s) and lower pressures (P = 60-130 torr) compared to both a spark discharge and a dc arc discharge. The experiments also demonstrated flame stabilization by the rf plasma, without the use of any physical obstacle flameholders. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectra of combustion products show that a significant fraction of the fuel (up to 80%) burns in the test section. Temperature measurements in the diffuse rf discharge using FTIR emission spectra show that the flow temperature in the plasma before ignition (T = 250-550°C at P = 60-120 torr) is considerably lower than the autoignition temperatures for ethylene-air mixtures at these pressures (T = 600-700°C). Visible emission spectroscopy measurements in C 2 H 4 -air flows in the rf discharge detected presence of radical species such as CH, C 2 , and OH, as well as O atoms. In CO-air flows, O and H atoms have been detected in the rf plasma region and CO 2 emission (carbon monoxide flame bands) in the flame downstream of the rf plasma.

A method for direct measurements of electron number density, ionization rate, and the electron–ion recombination rate coefficient in optically pumped non-equilibrium plasmas has been developed. In this method, a pulsed, non-self-sustained discharge created by applying square-shaped, below breakdown voltage pulses to two electrodes placed outside the plasma (a Thomson probe) is used to remove electrons from the plasma. The electron number density is inferred for CO/Ar and CO/N2 optical mixtures with small amounts of O2 additive present. The results are compared with microwave attenuation measurements. The electron–ion recombination rate coefficients in CO/Ar/O2 and in CO/N2/O2 plasmas are β = (3–4) × 10−8 cm3 s−1 and β = (2–3) × 10−7 cm3 s−1, respectively. Time-dependent measurements of the electron concentration and vacuum ultraviolet radiation (CO fourth positive system) are used to study the mechanism of CO(A1Π) population in the optically pumped plasma. The experimental results are compared with kinetic modelling calculations. The results systematically show that the intensity of the CO fourth positive radiation closely follows the electron number density in the laser-excited plasma region after the Thomson probe voltage is turned on or off. This demonstrates that electrons play a major role in the excitation of the A1Π electronic state of CO and provides additional evidence that vibrational-to-electronic (V–E) energy transfer in plasmas sustained without external electric fields is mediated by collisions with electrons.

An experimental study of shock modie cation in an M =2:5 supersonic e ow of nonequilibrium plasma over a cone is discussed. The experiments are conducted in a nonequilibrium plasma supersonic wind tunnel. Recent experiments at the Ohio State University using a supersonic plasma e ow over a quasi-two-dimensional wedge showed that an oblique shock can be considerably weakened by a transverse rf discharge plasma. The previously observed shock weakening, however, has been found consistent with a temperature rise in the boundary layers heated by the discharge. In thepresent study, theboundary-layereffects on theshock waveare reduced by placing an entire cone model into a supersonic inviscid core e ow. The electron density in the supersonic plasma e ow in the test section is measured using microwave attenuation. The ionization fraction in the discharge is in the same range as in the previous plasma shock experiments, up to ne/N =(1.2‐3.0)£10 i7 . The results do not show any detectable shock weakening by the plasma. This strongly suggests that the previously observed shock weakening and dispersion in nonequilibrium plasmas are entirely due to thermal effects.

The Valdez Glacier is a 33 km-long (20 mi) valley glacier located in the Chugach Mountains of south-central Alaska. The glacier occupies a deeply-incised U-shaped valley and terminates into Valdez Glacier lake, a proglacial lake located about 10 km (6 mi) east of the town of Valdez. Valdez Glacier lake is the dynamic, natural reservoir from which Valdez Glacier Stream originates, and plays an important role in modulating the discharge of water into Valdez Glacier Stream. This data release provides bathymetric measurements collected on July 3, 2012.

The paper discusses experiments on vibration-to-electronic energy transfer in CO laser pumped CO–Ar and CO–N2 plasmas. Ionization in these strongly nonequilibrium plasmas occurs by an associative mechanism, in collisions of two highly vibrationally excited CO molecules. The experiments show that removal of the electrons from the optically pumped plasmas using a saturated Thomson discharge results in considerable reduction of the UV/visible radiation from the plasma (CO 4th positive bands, NO c bands, CN violet bands, and C2 Swan bands). At some conditions, the removal of electrons results in a nearly complete extinguishing of the UV/visible glow of the plasma. This effect occurs even though electron removal results in an increase of the high vibrational level populations of the ground electronic state CO(X 1 R, v � 15–35). On the other hand, deliberate electron density increase by adding small amounts of O2 or NO to the optically pumped CO–Ar plasmas produced a substantial increase of the UV/visible radiation intensity, which strongly correlates with the electron density. The results of the present experiments indicate that the vibration-toelectronic (V–E) energy transfer process CO(X 1 R ! A 1 P), and, possibly, analogous processes populating radiating excited electronic states of NO, CN, and C2, in optically pumped plasmas, may be mediated by the presence of electrons which are created in the absence of an electric field, with low initial energies. Alcohol use disorder (AUD), a term that comprises both alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence, is a highly prevalent psychiatric disorder. Over 50% of treated AUD patients also suffer from other psychiatric disorder(s). Detailed study has revealed disorders across multiple psychiatric domains with rates of co-occurrence far greater than chance, suggesting a synergistic relationship. The basis of this synergy is explored along with its multiple forms, including behavioral and neurobiologic. Specific topics include the predisposition to both AUD and co-occurring psychopathology, the vulnerability to environmental risk factors that exacerbate these predispositions, and the nature of reinforcement in acute intoxication. Co-occurrence can also modify and exacerbate the neuroadaptations underpinning chronic dependence and relapse, the manifestations of acute and protracted withdrawal, emergence of medical and psychiatric complications, and ultimately the potential for relapse. The outcomes of co-occurrence as well as the unique impact it has on proper treatment are also discussed. Throughout, the significance of recognizing co-occurrence is emphasized since, both neurobiologically and clinically, the synergies between co-occurring disorders yield a result far more complex than a mere sum of the component disorders.
