1. Performance and Cost-Effectiveness of Ferric and Aluminum Hydrous Metal Oxide Coating on Filter Media to Enhance Virus Removal

Abstract

Coating sand and granular activated carbon with iron aluminum hydroxides changed the zeta potential of these filtration media from negative to positive at pH 6–9, while also significantly improving removal of viruses (MS2, PRD1, Polio1). A quaternary ammonium based coating on sand also increased zeta potential, but led to limited improvement in virus removal. The coated activated carbon was effective in both columns and faucet filters. Performance of faucet filters decreased slightly (e.g., 98% removal initially vs. 89% removal after 1 month) with time. The chemical costs of coating would add approximately 10% to the cost of water delivered by large-scale municipal systems, whereas coating chemical costs would add less than 1% to the cost of water treated by point-of-use faucet filters. The improvement in virus removal performance gained by use of coated filter media provides a significant benefit to the consumer in terms of increased microbiological quality at a modest-to-negligible increase in cost.

Abstract

The publication of David Hunter Strother’s Virginia Illustrated under the pseudonym Porte Crayon in Harper’s Monthly (1854–56) provides a compelling case study through which to consider the role of race in the development of a US mass visual culture. The media combinations found within and the reception history of Virginia Illustrated demonstrate the importance of racialized viewing to the early success of Harper’s Monthly at a critical moment in media history. To be sure, Virginia Illustrated circulated racist stereotypes to be mass consumed, but the image/text operations of Strother’s literary sketches and illustrations also extended the privileges and pleasures inherent in the performance of the white male gaze to the expanding readership of Harper’s Monthly despite the differences in region, gender, and class of that audience. The case study of Virginia Illustrated challenges us to revisit the oddly marginalized relationship of nineteenth-century illustration to literary, art, and media history and invites us to situate nineteenth-century US literature into the wider media landscape of which it was undoubtedly a part.

Abstract

This report presents a concept of constructing a detector dedicated for detection of muons observed during measurements carried out at the MPD (Multi-Purpose Detector) detector that is currently under construction at the NICA facility, Russia, Dubna. It has been proposed to design and build an additional detector that will complement the current MPD set and increase its measurement capabilities. The main goal of this project is to provide information from cosmic muons that pass the MPD detector in both in-beam and off-beam experiments. Hence, the detector is called the MPD COsmic Ray Detector (MCORD).The conceptual design of MCORD is proposed by a Polish consortium NICA-PL comprising several Polish scientific institutions. The data from cosmic ray muons could be used as a trigger for calibration of other detection systems comprising the MPD detector. Large surface covered by the MCORD offers also possibility for efficient registration of muons generated in expanding atmospheric showers induced by distant sources. Moreover, beyond some energy threshold, observation of muons originating from decays of collision products will also be possible. In this report examples of the MCORD functionality as a part of the MPD detector are presented. The MCORD is designed as a universal, fast triggering system built as a modular reconfigurable construction. The detection system will be based on plastic scintillators equipped with wavelength shifting fibers, and silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) will be used for scintillation readout. The online analysis of received signals will be performed using digital FPGA modules. Due to the modular design, the same system (its small part) can be used for both laboratory testing of other MPD sub-detectors, and the calibration of these detectors after placing them inside the MPD in off-beam mode. The full detector will support these systems as an additional trigger, calibrator, and muon identifier during the normal operation of the MPD detector with the beam. Thanks to its unique construction, it will expand the possibilities of collecting scientific data of the MPD detector with astrophysical observations. The publication will show the assumptions of the mechanical structure and electronic systems of the planned detector. The installation site of the detector as part of the MPD detector will be described in detail. In the following, the results of simulations made in preparation for this project will be presented. In particular, simulations with the CORSIKA code present angular distributions of particles in cosmic showers in the Dubna city region. Since muons dominate the cosmic ray showers, the MPD detector response to expected cosmic muon flux was also simulated. The results provide information about the muon cut-off thresholds depending on the MPD detector composition during the installation campaign. Simulations of muon events that could be used for MPD subsystems calibration were also performed. The results shown for various configuration of MCORD detector modules will enable the estimation of the time necessary to perform such tests in the future. Simulations with UrQMD model shows the muon abundances due to beam-beam collisions. Approximately 90% of muons are created from pions, whereas the number of muons that reach the MCORD detector is 10 times greater than the number of pions. The MPD detector response was also simulated under the influence of a stream of various particles, especially muons. It shows energy dependence of muon transmission coefficient for MPD with and without ECal assembled. Assuming requirement for muon transmission above 95%, the muon cut-off thresholds are 1.6 GeV and 2.0 GeV, respectively. MCORD detector performance evaluation is also reported. In the case when we used scintillators with one fiber with a diameter of 1 mm, the time resolution of about 1.0 ns was recorded, which corresponds to the positional accuracy (σx) of 7.1 cm. The results of laboratory tests show that application of a 2 mm diameter WLS fiber instead of the previously used 1 mm diameter fiber improves the time resolution to 0.80 ns.

Abstract

International audience; The reactions$^{136}$Xe + p and$^{136}$Xe +$^{12}$C have been studied in inverse kinematics at 1 A GeV with the SPALADiN setup at GSI. The detection in coincidence of the final-state charged particles (projectile residues, nuclei of charge $ Z \geq 2$ and neutrons was performed with a big-aperture dipole magnet and large-acceptance detectors. This provided an extended coverage of the phase space of decay products of the prefragment formed at the end of the intranuclear cascade. This coincidence measurement, performed on an event-by-event basis permits both an estimate of the excitation energy of the prefragments and a determination of their deexcitation channels. The element production cross sections are compared with existing data and theoretical models. The evolution of observables such as the total multiplicity or the fragment production with the prefragment’s excitation energy is studied for both reactions and compared with models.

Abstract

The first observation of (anti)deuterons in deep inelastic scattering at HERA has been made with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 300--318 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. The measurement was performed in the central rapidity region for transverse momentum per unit of mass in the range 0.3, Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables, submitted to Nucl. Phys. B

Abstract

Isolated photon production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 320pb^-1. Measurements were made in the isolated-photon transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges 4 < E_T < 15 GeV and -0.7 < eta < 0.9 for exchanged photon virtualities, Q^2, in the range 10 < Q^2 < 350 GeV and for invariant masses of the hadronic system W_X> 5 GeV. Differential cross sections are presented for inclusive isolated photon production as functions of Q^2, x, E_T and eta. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo simulations and perturbative QCD predictions give a reasonable description of the data over most of the kinematic range., 23 pages, 5 figures (15 subfigures)

Abstract

Pion energy spectra are presented for central collisions of neutron-rich $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}+^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ and neutron-deficient $^{108}\mathrm{Sn}+^{112}\mathrm{Sn}$ systems using simulations with the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model. These calculations, which incorporate isospin-dependent mean-field potentials for relevant baryons and mesons, display a sensitivity to the pion spectra that could allow significant constraints on the density dependence of the symmetry energy and its mean-field potential at suprasaturation densities. The predicted sensitivity increases with the isospin asymmetry of the total system and decreases with incident energy.

Abstract

A search for stop production in R-parity-violating supersymmetry has been performed in $e^{+}p$ interactions with the ZEUS detector at HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 65 pb$^{-1}$. At HERA, the R-parity-violating coupling $\lambda'$ allows resonant squark production, $e^+d\to\tilde{q}$. Since the lowest-mass squark state in most supersymmetry models is the light stop, $\tilde{t}$, this search concentrated on production of $\tilde{t}$, followed either by a direct R-parity-violating decay, or by the gauge decay to $b\tilde{\chi}^+_{1}$. No evidence for stop production was found and limits were set on $\lambda'_{131}$ as a function of the stop mass in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Abstract

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy-ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. The results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model simulations favoured a moderately soft symmetry term, but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. These results have been confirmed by an independent analysis based on the Tübingen QMD simulations. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration. Abstract

PurposeThis paper aims to describe a case study of the FCC, dealing with relieving the tension between technical innovation and the regulation of applications of technology.Design/methodology/approachThe author's experience as Chief Scientist of the FCC is used to show how the innovations of the information age were accommodated under the procedures governing the regulation of communications.FindingsThe success of the rapid introduction of digital information technology and networking, replacing analog telephony and inflexible technical rules governing the use of the electromagnetic spectrum, resulted from relatively minor modifications in staffing of a technical planning office lacking currency with the innovations in the technology supporting the communication and broadcasting industries. The support of the chairman, the commissioners, and their confidence in the leadership of the office were critical to success.Originality/valueLeading a regulatory agency to helping rather than hindering progress speaks for itself.

Abstract

A new type of spallation experiments has been carried out at GSI, Darmstadt (Germany) in order to understand the spallation mechanism in greater details. These experiments use the inverse-kinematics technique where the ion beam is directed onto a liquid Hydrogen target, allowing the detection of heavy spallation residues in coincidence with low center-of-mass energy light particles. The setup is based on A Large Acceptance DIpole magNet (ALADIN) coupled with a multitrack Time Projection Chamber (TPC), a hodoscope and a neutron detector. First, data on 56 Fe + p at 1 A GeV were taken in February 2004. In the on-going analysis, isotopic cross-sections have been determined and compared to data taken at the FRagment Separator in GSI. Mean values and width of residue velocity distributions have also been obtained as well as Helium production cross-section. First, coincidence data are being analyzed.

Abstract

Early and middle Miocene cool-water carbonates from the Murray Basin, South Australia, preserve an excellent stable-isotope record of ocean-climate change. These variably fossiliferous heterozoan deposits accumulated on a low-energy, mesotrophic, centripetal epeiric ramp during a gradual shift in climate from cool, wet conditions and abundant continent-derived nutrients to a seasonal, arid climate with reduced delivery of trophic resources to the marine realm. Temporal trends in δ13C and δ18O from unaltered brachiopods record an epeiric sea response to this warming. The globally recognized middle Miocene Monterey Event (~ 17 to 13.5 Ma) dominates the carbon isotope record, albeit with higher (~ 0.5‰) than open-ocean δ13C values. Such higher δ13C values are attributed to an increase in benthic carbonate production that accompanied climate change and the relatively short seawater mixing times characteristic of epeiric-sea systems. The Murray Basin oxygen isotope curve contains lower δ18O values (~ 2.0‰ lower) than those of the deep-sea record. This difference is ascribed to the warmer seawater temperatures (~ 17 to 22°C) that prevailed across the Miocene Murray Basin. These results show that the isotope chemistry of epeiric-sea brachiopods can be a reliable gauge of regional and global environmental evolution. Although diagenetic overprinting from meteoric cement-filled punctae and local forcing factors introduce "noise" that mutes isotopic signals, the open-ocean secular record is clearly discernible.

Abstract

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich Heavy-Ion at intermediate energies has been recently proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear equation of state (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011. © Owned by the authors, 2012.

Abstract

The very forward region of a linear collider detector is a particularly challenging area for instrumentation. For the TESLA project a luminometer (LAT) at small polar angles is foreseen to perform a high precision (O(10/sup -4/)) luminosity measurement, requiring the control of the systematics on the corresponding level. Monte Carlo simulations to optimize the shape and the structure of the calorimeter are presented. A second calorimeter (LCAL) is positioned just adjacent to the beampipe. Into this device a large amount of bremsstrahlung remnants, several ten TeV per bunch crossing, is scattered, resulting in a radiation dose of about 10 MGy per year. The distribution of the bremsstrahlung has to be measured in order to assist in the tuning of the beams at the final focus. Furthermore, single hard electrons have to be measured, or at least vetoed. The latter is important, since events with high energetic electrons near the beampipe are a serious background in many search channels with missing energy and momentum. Monte Carlo simulations for a heavy crystal calorimeter and a diamond/tungsten sandwich structures are presented and compared. First results on sensor tests are given.

Abstract

The Pliocene Norwest Bend Formation is a well-preserved succession of terrestrial and shallow-marine deposits in the Murray Basin, South Australia. Sediments in this unit consist of two discrete terrigenous clastic-rich, decametre-scale sequences, or informal members, which record episodes of marine incursion during the Early and Late Pliocene respectively. The base of each sequence is a transgressive lag and/or strandline deposit that is transitional upwards into a highstand, subtidal, terrigenous clastic and cool-water carbonate sediment accumulation. The top of each sequence is incised by fluvial channels that are filled by river deposits which formed as relative sea-level fell and terrestrial environments prograded basinward. Sedimentological data suggest that gross stratigraphic architecture was primarily determined by glacioeustasy. Differences in sedimentary style between these two sequences, however, reflect a major climatic change that took place in southern Australia during the mid-Pliocene. The lower quartzose sand member is formed of siliciclastic sediment derived from prolonged, deep, subaerial weathering and contains a bivalve-dominated, cool-temperate, open-marine mollusc assemblage. These sediments accumulated under an equitable, relatively warm, humid climate. The Murray Basin during this time, because of high fluvial discharge, was a salt-wedge estuary with typical estuarine circulation. In contrast, the upper, oyster-rich member is typified by large monospecific oyster buildups that grew in restricted coastal environments. Strandline deposits contain a warm-temperate skeletal assemblage. Contemporaneous aeolian sediments accumulated under warm, semi-arid climatic conditions. Well-developed ferricrete, silcrete and calcrete horizons reflect cyclic conditions of rainwater infiltration and evaporation in the seasonally dry climate that typifies southern Australia today. Highly seasonal rainfall produced an estuary that fluctuated annually from being well to partially mixed. These Pliocene sediments support the notion that mollusc-rich facies are the signature of cool-water carbonate accumulations in inboard neritic environments. Unlike bryozoans that dominate the outer parts of Cenozoic cool-water carbonate shelves, molluscs evolved to exploit an array of coastal ecosystems with wide salinity variations and variable sedimentation rates.

Abstract

The beauty production cross section for deep inelastic scattering events with at least one hard jet in the Breit frame together with a muon has been measured, for photon virtualities Q^2 > 2 GeV^2, with the ZEUS detector at HERA using integrated luminosity of 72 pb^-1. The total visible cross section is sigma_b-bbar (ep -> e jet mu X) = 40.9 +- 5.7 (stat.) +6.0 -4.4 (syst.) pb. The next-to-leading order QCD prediction lies about 2.5 standard deviations below the data. The differential cross sections are in general consistent with the NLO QCD predictions; however at low values of Q^2, Bjorken x, and muon transverse momentum, and high values of jet transverse energy and muon pseudorapidity, the prediction is about two standard deviations below the data., 18 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Certain members of the bryozoan genus Celleporaria form large, erect colonies of hollow branches (∼10–30 cm tall and 1–3 cm diameter). These are common and conspicuous in Pleistocene and Cenozoic neritic strata of the southern margin of Australia. Most of these basins are characterized by decimeter-scale cycles through subtidal, heterozoan, cool-water, carbonate sediments. Several intervals are further characterized by pervasive celleporarid bryozoan thickets (10–30 cm thick), individual units of which can be traced for many tens of kilometers. Study of modern, live celleporarid bryozoans from the continental shelf of the Great Australian Bight (GAB), Pleistocene celleporarid mounds stranded below the shelf break of the Australian margin, and Miocene celleporarid thickets from the Murray and Torquay Basins indicates that Celleporaria thickets form under specific environmental conditions: i.e., low-energy or sub-swell wave-base settings, mud-silt substrate, medium-high mesotrophy, and moderate sed...

Abstract

Decimeter-scale, deepening-upward cycles are the basic depositional motif of Oligocene-Miocene Murray Supergroup limestones in the Murray Basin, southeastern Australia. Cycles formed in this large intracratonic basin on a centripetal, temperate-water epeiric ramp. They reflect generation by trophic resource-influenced carbonate production under mostly transgressive conditions. Listed from the base up, each cycle is ideally composed of five parts: Part A--biotically depauperate carbonates reflecting relatively shallow-water, restricted, variably stressed highly mesotrophic environments; Part B--increasingly biotically diverse limestones recording progressively more physical energy and less mesotrophic conditions upward; OM1--a conspicuous hardground to firmground surface formed during late transgression to stillstand during which wave sweeping and reworking contributed to omission and lithification; Part C--relatively biotically diverse, epifauna-dominant sediments that were highly abraded during periods of condensed sedimentation under marginally oligotrophic conditions; and OM2 (cycle boundary)--a rarely conspicuous surface representing arrested sedimentation and variable cementation as trophic resources increased and conditions for carbonate production deteriorated. Ten cycle types are grouped into four major styles; clay cycles, mollusc cycles, echinoid cycles, and bryozoan cycles. These are interpreted to form a lithological continuum from inner restricted terrigenous locales to outer, open marine, bryozoan-colonized environments. Deepening-upward cycles were profoundly sensitive to autogenic factors such as nutrient influx, terrigenous content and turbidity, hydrodynamic energy, water temperature, salinity, and water depth manifested in this intracratonic setting. Although these cycles share a similar sedimentological motif and hydrodynamic energy-based cycle-capping process with open shelf, epicratonic, shallowing-upward subtidal cycles of Tertiary age, they formed in a very different way reflecting the distinctive intracratonic environment in which they formed. Murray Basin cycles preserve a record of relative sea-level rise whereas open shelf cycles accumulated mostly during relative sea-level fall.

Abstract

A combination is presented of the inclusive deep inelastic cross sections measured by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations in neutral and charged current unpolarised e ± p scattering at HERA during the period 1994-2000. The data span six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentum-transfer squared, Q 2, and in Bjorken x. The combination method used takes the correlations of systematic uncertainties into account, resulting in an improved accuracy. The combined data are the sole input in a NLO QCD analysis which determines a new set of parton distributions, HERAPDF1.0, with small experimental uncertainties.
