In a construction project, the need to conduct effective and efficient material management is urgent since it takes up to 60% of the project budget. Most of the material tracking uses tag-based technology by attaching RFID, GPS, or UWB to the materials. This method is found to be effective in tracking the material in construction projects. However, there is still a manual job of putting the tag into each of the materials and problems related to the signal quality and infrastructure requirements. As an alternative way to do material tracking, point cloud processing can be used. This paper aims to develop an efficient approach to accurately detect concrete pipe precast material, calculate its numbers, and produce valuable data for material inventory management. The data was taken by a mobile laser scanner of a site-specific infrastructure project in Sydney. The resulting data was sparse and occluded because it was taken only from one side to replicate the actual scanning process in a construction project. The automated process has been conducted by matching the material based on its geometric feature of the 3D material model. The proposed approach can provide some spatial information such as location (x, y, z global coordinate), orientation of each material, and the number of materials. The result can detect up to 78.5% of the material. The difference between actual and predicted global coordinates is 0.75m which is acceptable for material location in a large infrastructure project. This data can be reconstructed in a 3D detail of the site project in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) platform in its actual location. The implementation of this method serves as an initial stage toward achieving synchronization between the physical construction and its corresponding digital twin in the field of construction.

Summary: Acquired resistance to oncogene-targeted therapies is the major driver of mortality for patients with cancer. Here, we present a 6-to-16-week assay to model the development of acquired resistance in adherent and suspension cancer cell lines. We describe steps for determining therapeutic dose, assaying acquired resistance, and testing combination therapies. Son of sevenless 1 and 2 (SOS1 and SOS2) are RAS guanine nucleotide exchange factors (RasGEFs) that mediate physiologic and pathologic receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK)‐dependent RAS activation. Here, we show that SOS2 modulates the threshold of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling to regulate the efficacy of and resistance to the EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR‐TKI) osimertinib in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). SOS2 deletion (SOS2KO) sensitized EGFR‐mutated cells to perturbations in EGFR signaling caused by reduced serum and/or osimertinib treatment to inhibit phosphatidylinositol 3‐kinase (PI3K)/AKT pathway activation, oncogenic transformation, and survival. Bypassing RTK reactivation of PI3K/AKT signaling represents a common resistance mechanism to EGFR‐TKIs; SOS2KO reduced PI3K/AKT reactivation to limit osimertinib resistance. In a forced HGF/MET‐driven bypass model, SOS2KO inhibited hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)‐stimulated PI3K signaling to block HGF‐driven osimertinib resistance. Using a long‐term in situ resistance assay, most osimertinib‐resistant cultures exhibited a hybrid epithelial/mesenchymal phenotype associated with reactivated RTK/AKT signaling. In contrast, RTK/AKT‐dependent osimertinib resistance was markedly reduced by SOS2 deletion; the few SOS2KO cultures that became osimertinib resistant primarily underwent non‐RTK‐dependent epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT). Since bypassing RTK reactivation and/or tertiary EGFR mutations represent most osimertinib‐resistant cancers, these data suggest that targeting proximal RTK signaling, here exemplified by SOS2 deletion, has the potential to delay the development osimertinib resistance and enhance overall clinical responses for patients with EGFR‐mutated LUAD.

Abstract Background Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to increase the affordability and accessibility of eye disease screening, especially with the recent approval of AI-based diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening programs in several countries. Methods This study investigated the performance, feasibility, and user experience of a seamless hardware and software solution for screening chronic eye diseases in a real-world clinical environment in Germany. The solution integrated AI grading for DR, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and glaucoma, along with specialist auditing and patient referral decision. The study comprised several components: (1) evaluating the entire system solution from recruitment to eye image capture and AI grading for DR, AMD, and glaucoma; (2) comparing specialist’s grading results with AI grading results; (3) gathering user feedback on the solution. Results A total of 231 patients were recruited, and their consent forms were obtained. The sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve for DR grading were 100.00%, 80.10%, and 90.00%, respectively. For AMD grading, the values were 90.91%, 78.79%, and 85.00%, and for glaucoma grading, the values were 93.26%, 76.76%, and 85.00%. The analysis of all false positive cases across the three diseases and their comparison with the final referral decisions revealed that only 17 patients were falsely referred among the 231 patients. The efficacy analysis of the system demonstrated the effectiveness of the AI grading process in the study’s testing environment. Clinical staff involved in using the system provided positive feedback on the disease screening process, particularly praising the seamless workflow from patient registration to image transmission and obtaining the final result. Results from a questionnaire completed by 12 participants indicated that most found the system easy, quick, and highly satisfactory. The study also revealed room for improvement in the AMD model, suggesting the need to enhance its training data. Furthermore, the performance of the glaucoma model grading could be improved by incorporating additional measures such as intraocular pressure. Conclusions The implementation of the AI-based approach for screening three chronic eye diseases proved effective in real-world settings, earning positive feedback on the usability of the integrated platform from both the screening staff and auditors. The auditing function has proven valuable for obtaining efficient second opinions from experts, pointing to its potential for enhancing remote screening capabilities. Summary: Intrinsic and acquired resistance limit the window of effectiveness for oncogene-targeted cancer therapies. Here, we describe an in situ resistance assay (ISRA) that reliably models acquired resistance to RTK/RAS-pathway-targeted therapies across cell lines. Using osimertinib resistance in EGFR-mutated lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) as a model system, we show that acquired osimertinib resistance can be significantly delayed by inhibition of proximal RTK signaling using SHP2 inhibitors. Isolated osimertinib-resistant populations required SHP2 inhibition to resensitize cells to osimertinib and reduce MAPK signaling to block the effects of enhanced activation of multiple parallel RTKs. We additionally modeled resistance to targeted therapies including the KRASG12C inhibitors adagrasib and sotorasib, the MEK inhibitor trametinib, and the farnesyl transferase inhibitor tipifarnib. These studies highlight the tractability of in situ resistance assays to model acquired resistance to targeted therapies and provide a framework for assessing the extent to which synergistic drug combinations can target acquired drug resistance.

Abstract Purpose: To compare the results of the current gold standard, laser interferometry, and keratometry by the IOL-Master, with a newly developed Galilei G6 using raytracing software Okulix for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations. Methods: For comparison of the IOL-power calculation of both devices, we analyzed the difference between the actual one-month postoperative subjective refraction and the theoretically calculated target refraction before cataract surgery. The IOL was selected according to the IOL Master recommendation aiming for emmetropia after surgery.We analyzed the differences of the measurements of the basic biometric data in 205 healthy eyes by each device. Results: Our study included 205 healthy, unoperated eyes from 117 patients (61 women, 56 men) aged 20 to 75 years. Twenty-two eyes of cataract patients were also included in this retrospective study design. The mean difference between the prediction of the postoperative refraction and the refraction actually achieved was 0.03 D for the IOL Master and –0.23 D for the Galilei G6. The difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.059). The difference between the IOL power calculation of the IOL Master and the calculation of the G6 was not statistically significant (P = 0.064). The difference between the predicted refraction of the G6 and the refraction achieved after one month was also not statistically significant (P = 0.12) and neither was the difference between the predicted refraction of the IOL Master and the achieved refraction (P = 0.39). The mean axial length was calculated as 24.21 ± 0.80 mm using the IOL Master and 24.27 ± 0.82 mm using the Galilei G6 device. The mean value regarding anterior chamber depth (ACD) of the IOL master was 3.46 ± 0.23 mm and for the Galilei was G6 3.51 ± 0.25 mm. When comparing the white to white (WTW) values of the IOL master, it showed mean values of 12.32 ± 0.31 and Galilei showed mean values of G6 12.21 ± 0.28. All of these differences (between Galileo and IOL Master measurements) were statistically significant (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Both the laser interferometry/keratometry performed by the IOL Master and the interferometry/raytracing biometry strategy performed by the Galilei G6 demonstrated equal results when executing the IOL power calculation before cataract surgery in eyes with no prior ocular surgery.

New transport infrastructure construction can stimulate the growth of economy as well as improving the public citizen welfare. However, with the rising number of mega infrastructure projects, the low project performance, such as project delay and cost escalation, are challenging the traditional Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. Traditional Construction progress monitoring methods rely on manual data collecting and paperwork reporting which can be labor-intensive, time-consuming and error-prone. Therefore, it is necessary for the involved stakeholders to introduce advanced technologies which facilitates assessing the construction performance automatically and ensures the projects to be delivered on time. The application of building information modeling (BIM) provides involved parties an accurate understandable single source of truth that can improve the interoperability of project information. Nevertheless, current ‘Scan-to-BIM’ workflow cannot support the demand for real-time data analysis and status reporting. This paper presents a semi-automatic construction progress monitoring framework that evaluating the project performance of the infrastructure in real-time. It introduces Hausdorff distance which transmits the 3-D geometrical information contained by as-built point cloud to virtual point cloud directly, to avoid the drawbacks of space partitioning algorithms. The Poisson surface reconstruction utilizing volume as criterion to improve the robustness of progress determination. In addition, the application of 2D polygon fitting provides a potentially feasible method to identify the installation of pre-cast components of the bridge construction. The results indicate that the proposed framework can effectively monitor the geometric increment of road bridge construction project.

The increasing number of aging infrastructures has drawn attention among the industry as the results caused by critical infrastructure failure could be destructive. It is essential to monitor the infrastructure assets and provide timely maintenance. However, one of the crucial problems is that the budget allocated to the maintenance stage is much less than that for the designing and construction stages. The cost of labor, equipment, and vehicles are significant. Therefore, it is impossible to perform a thorough inspection by human inspectors over each asset. A more efficient method will be needed to solve this problem. This paper aims to provide an automatic approach to detecting and measuring the dimensions of minor cracks that appear on concrete structures with a noisy background. This research also investigates the relationship between image pixel size, accuracy, detection rate of cracks, and shooting distance of images. The proposed method will be able to reduce the cost and increase accuracy. A case study was performed on a concrete sewer with cracks distributed on the surface in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Abstract Background There are few reports of new functional impairment following critical illness from COVID-19. We aimed to describe the incidence of death or new disability, functional impairment and changes in health-related quality of life of patients after COVID-19 critical illness at 6 months. Methods In a nationally representative, multicenter, prospective cohort study of COVID-19 critical illness, we determined the prevalence of death or new disability at 6 months, the primary outcome. We measured mortality, new disability and return to work with changes in the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 12L (WHODAS) and health status with the EQ5D-5LTM. Results Of 274 eligible patients, 212 were enrolled from 30 hospitals. The median age was 61 (51–70) years, and 124 (58.5%) patients were male. At 6 months, 43/160 (26.9%) patients died and 42/108 (38.9%) responding survivors reported new disability. Abstract Purpose: Currently, two major principles exist to create LASIK flaps: firstly, a strictly horizontal (2D) cut similar to the microkeratome-cut and secondly an angled cut with a “step-like” edge (3D). The strictly horizontal (2D) cut method can be performed using apparatus such as the low-energy FEMTO LDV Z8 laser and its predecessors which are specific to this type. Alternatively, the low-energy FEMTO LDV Z8 laser's 3D flap design creates an interlocking flap-interface surface which potentially contributes toward flap stability. In addition, the FEMTO LDV Z8 offers flap-position adjustments after docking (before flap-creation). The current study analyzed precision, safety, efficacy, as well as patient self-reported pain and comfort levels after applying two different types of LASIK flap morphologies which were created with a low-energy, high-frequency femtosecond (fs) laser device. Methods: A prospective, interventional, randomized, contralateral eye, single-center comparison study was conducted from November 2019 to March 2020 at the Hamburg vision clinic/ zentrumsehstärke, Hamburg, Germany. Eleven patients and 22 eyes received low-energy fs LASIK treatment for myopia or myopic astigmatism in both eyes. Before the treatment, the eyes were randomized (one eye was treated with the 2D, the other eye with the 3D method). Results: The mean central flap thickness one month after surgery was 110.7 ± 1.6 μm (2D) and 111.2 ± 1.7 μm (3D); P = 0.365 (2D vs 3D). Flap thickness measured at 13 different points resulted in no statistically significant differences between any of the measurement points within/between both groups; demonstrating good planarity of the flap was achieved using both methods. Despite not being statistically significant, the surgeons recognized an increase in the presence of an opaque bubble layer in the 3D flap eyes during surgery and some patients reported higher, yet not statistically significant, pain scores in the 3D flap eyes during the first hours after the treatment. Overall, safety- and efficacy indices were 1.03 and 1.03, respectively. Conclusion: In this prospective, randomized, contralateral eye study, the low-energy fs laser yielded predictable lamellar flap thicknesses and geometry at one-month follow-up. Based on these results, efficacy and safety of the corresponding laser application, that is, 2D vs 3D, are equivalent.

Requirements for wastewater management and water-reuse concepts concerning sustainability are gaining greater importance, especially in times of climate change. Industrial park developments are often hindered due to water scarcity. Thus, nowadays, the reuse of wastewater is becoming more and more important to increase the availability of water and to enable new developments. The sustainable Industrial WasteWater Management Concept with the focus on Reuse (IW2MC → R) provides a solution strategy to produce reuse water from industrial wastewater within production plants. To achieve sustainability, certain requirements are essential since the reuse water can be provided directly via an optimized wastewater treatment process for subsequent use. Hence, it is then ‘fit for purpose’. This enables a more efficient application of reuse water. Furthermore, due to environmental issues, it is important to construct space-saving water resource recovery facilities for reducing land consumption within industrial parks. HIGHLIGHTS The reuse of wastewater is becoming more and more important to increase the availability of water and to enable new developments.; An optimized treatment process reduces the required area inside the industrial park.; The IRF can be increased by optimized industrial park management by controlling new production plant settlements.; The IW2MC → R has to fulfill diverse sustainability requirements.;

Drug treatment of 3D cancer spheroids more accurately reflects in vivo therapeutic responses compared to adherent culture studies. In EGFR-mutated lung adenocarcinoma, EGFR-TKIs show enhanced efficacy in spheroid cultures. Simultaneous inhibition of multiple parallel RTKs further enhances EGFR-TKI effectiveness. We show that the common RTK signaling intermediate SOS1 was required for 3D spheroid growth of EGFR-mutated NSCLC cells. Using two distinct measures of pharmacologic synergy, we demonstrated that SOS1 inhibition strongly synergized with EGFR-TKI treatment only in 3D spheroid cultures. Combined EGFR- and SOS1-inhibition markedly inhibited Raf/MEK/ERK and PI3K/AKT signaling. Finally, broad assessment of the pharmacologic landscape of drug-drug interactions downstream of mutated EGFR revealed synergy when combining an EGFR-TKI with inhibitors of proximal signaling intermediates SOS1 and SHP2, but not inhibitors of downstream RAS effector pathways. These data indicate that vertical inhibition of proximal EGFR signaling should be pursued as a potential therapy to treat EGFR-mutated tumors.

The plasma facing first wall in ITER will be armored with beryllium. During operation, the armor has to sustain direct plasma contact during the start-up and ramp-down of the plasma. On top, transient thermal loads originating from a variety of plasma instabilities or mitigation systems are impacting the 8–10 mm thick beryllium tiles. In this work, possible armor thickness losses caused by the expected transient heat loads are reviewed. Applying conservative assumptions, vertical displacement events can cause locally a melt layer with a thickness of up to 3 mm. However, cracks after solidification/cool down are confined to the melt layer and the connection between melt layer and bulk remains strong. Radiative cooling mechanisms can be applied to significantly decrease the melt and evaporation layer thickness. To mitigate the critical damage potential of plasma disruptions, massive gas injections or shattered pellet injections can be deployed to transform the stored plasma energy into radiation, which implies a much more homogeneous distribution of energy to the plasma facing components. For a full power plasma discharge in ITER, these radiative loads can cause temperatures exceeding the melting temperature of beryllium. Experiments have demonstrated that a thickness of 340 µm at the entire first wall armor can be affected by these mechanisms over the lifetime of ITER. Edge localized modes with expected characteristics obtained by fluid model simulations caused fatigue cracks with a depth of up to 350 µm in experimental simulations. The critical heat flux factor FHF above which inflicted damage accumulates with each subsequent pulse has been determined to be in the range of FHF ≈ 9–12 MW m−2 s0.5. The damage from thermal loads below this threshold saturates between 104 and 106 pulses. Neutron irradiation has a deteriorating effect on the thermomechanical properties of beryllium, which strongly influence its resistance against thermally induced damages. The rather low neutron fluence over the lifetime of ITER is expected to reduce the material strength and thermal conductivity by a few tens of percents. If the thickness losses are affected to a similar extent, a sufficient margin of armor thickness will remain. Overall, the damage imposed by radiative loads from massive gas injections or shattered pellet injections is expected to be the dominant force influencing the condition of the first wall armor, at least if all disruptions can be successfully mitigated and the number of vertical displacement events can be constrained to a few occurrences over the service time of ITER. Tungsten, the plasma facing material (PFM) for the divertor in ITER, must sustain severe, distinct loading conditions. This broad array of exposure conditions necessitates comprehensive experiments that cover most of the expected loading parameters to predict qualitative statements about the performance and as a consequence thereof the intended operation time. However, comprehensive experiments are inherently difficult to realize due to the fact that there is no device that is capable of simulating all loading conditions simultaneously. Nevertheless, the linear plasma device PSI-2 enables experiments combining thermal and particle exposure at the same time. In this work, sequential and simultaneous loads on pure tungsten at different base temperatures were investigated to study not only the performance of the material, but also the influence of the experimental parameters. The detailed analysis and comparison of the obtained results showed different kinds of damage depending on the loading sequence, power density, microstructure of the samples, and base temperature. Finally, samples with transversal grain orientation (T) showed the weakest damage resistance and the increase of the base temperature could not compensate the detrimental impact of deuterium.

In the full-tungsten divertor qualification program at ITER Organization, macro-cracks, so called self-castellation were found in a fraction of tungsten monoblocks during cyclic high heat flux loading at 20MW/m2. The number of monoblocks with macro-cracks varied with the tungsten products used as armour material. In order to understand correlation between the macro-crack appearance and W properties, an activity to characterize W monoblock materials was launched at the IO. The outcome highlighted that the higher the recrystallization resistance, the lower the number of cracks detected during high heat flux tests. Thermo-mechanical finite element modelling demonstrated that the maximum surface temperature ranges from 1800 °C to 2200 °C and in this range recrystallization of tungsten occurred. Furthermore, it indicated that loss of strength due to recrystallization is responsible for the development of macro-cracks in the tungsten monoblock. Structural damage due to high flux particle irradiation can result in significant changes to the thermal strength of the plasma facing component surface (PFC) during off-normal events in a tokamak. Low-energy He+ ion irradiation of tungsten (W), which is currently the leading candidate material for future PFCs, can result in the development of a fiber form nanostructure, known as “fuzz”. In the current study, mirror-finished W foils were exposed to 100eV He+ ion irradiation at a fluence of 2.6 ×1024ionsm−2 and a temperature of 1200K. Then, samples were exposed to two different types of pulsed heat loading meant to replicate type-I edge-localized mode (ELM) heating at varying energy densities and base temperatures. Millisecond (ms) laser exposure done at 1200K revealed a reduction in fuzz density with increasing energy density due to the conglomeration and local melting of W fibers. At higher energy densities (∼ 1.5MJm−2), RT exposures resulted in surface cracking, while 1200K exposures resulted in surface roughening, demonstrating the role of base temperature on the crack formation in W. Electron beam heating presented similar trends in surface morphology evolution; a higher penetration depth led to reduced melt motion and plasticity. In situ mass loss measurements obtained via a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) found an exponential increase in particle emission for RT exposures, while the prevalence of melting from 1200K exposures yielded no observable trend. Material migration in ITER is expected to move beryllium (Be) eroded from the first wall primarily to the tungsten (W) divertor region and to magnetically shadowed areas of the wall itself. This paper is concerned with experimental study of Be layer response to ELM-like plasma pulses using the new QSPA-Be plasma gun (SRC RF TRINITI). The Be layers (1→50µm thick) are deposited on special castellated Be and W targets supplied by the ITER Organization using the Thermionic Vacuum Arc technique. Transient deuterium plasma pulses with duration ∼0.5ms were selected to provide absorbed energy densities on the plasma stream axis for a 30° target inclination of 0.2 and 0.5MJm−2, the first well below and the second near the Be melting point. This latter value is close to the prescribed maximum energy density for controlled ELMs on ITER. At 0.2MJm−2 on W, all Be layer thicknesses tested retain their integrity up to the maximum pulse number, except at local defects (flakes, holes and cracks) and on tile edges. At 0.5MJm−2 on W, Be layer melting and melt layer agglomeration are the main damage processes, they happen immediately in the first plasma impact. Melt layer movement was observed only near plasma facing edges. No significant melt splashing is observed in spite of high plasma pressure (higher than expected in ITER). Be layer of 10µm thick on Be target has higher resistance to plasma irradiation than 1 and 55µm, and retain their integrity up to the maximum pulse number at 0.2MJm−2. The experimental fusion reactor ITER will apply beryllium as first wall armor material. In present fusion experiments, e.g. ASDEX Upgrade, it has been detected that up to 25% of the plasma energy loss is deposited in non divertor regions during edge localized mode (ELM) events. Therefore, the impact of transient heating events on beryllium needs to be investigated to reliably predict the performance of the beryllium armor tiles under ITER operational conditions. In the present experiments, the electron beam facility JUDITH 2 was used to exert transient heat pulses with power densities of 0.14–1.0GWm−2, as they can be expected for mitigated Type 1 ELMs in ITER, pulse durations in the range of 0.08–1.0ms, and a number of pulses in the range of 103–107 on S-65 beryllium specimens that were brazed on an actively cooled copper structure. Thereby, a strong drop of the melting threshold was discovered from a heat flux factor FHF = 22–25MWm−2s0.5 for 102 pulses to FHF

The study summarizes the experimental results on fusion relevant pure heat load exposures of different tungsten products in the electron beam devices JUDITH 1 and 2. Besides steady state heat loading, up to 106 transient ELM-like pulses were applied. A detailed postmortem analysis reveals a wide and complex range of thermally-induced surface modifications and damages, such as roughening due to plastic deformation, cracking, and melting of parts of the material surface. Different industrially available tungsten products with varying thermal and mechanical properties were investigated in order to examine their influence on the thermal shock response. Furthermore, recrystallisation of the material, which will take place during long term operation, will additionally deteriorate the mechanical strength of the plasma facing material. The results show that the mechanical strength of the material has a significant influence on the formation and evolution of damage. Especially, recrystallisation and melting/resolidification will make the material more prone to thermal shock and fatigue, accelerating the evolution of damages. The combination of different material modifications/damages accompanied by the degradation of mechanical properties will have a strong impact on the plasma performance and lifetime of plasma facing materials/components. The damage of deformed double forged pure tungsten (W) and tungsten alloyed with 5wt% tantalum (WTa5) have been studied in experimental simulations of ITER-like transient events with relevant surface heat load parameters (energy density up to 0.75MJ/m2 and the pulse duration of 0.25ms) as well as particle loads (varied in wide range from 1023 to 1027 ion/m2 s) with quasi-stationary plasma accelerator QSPA Kh-50. The plasma exposures were performed for the targets maintained at room temperature and preheated at 200°C. The surface heat loads were either with no melting of W surface or above the melting threshold. The development of surface morphology of the exposed targets as well as cracking and swelling at the surface is discussed. Surface analysis was carried out with an optical microscopy and SEM. Surface modification and development of cracks led to increases of roughness of exposed surfaces. X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been used to study the micro-structural evolution of the exposed targets. The micro deformations of W and WTa5 are similar for targets exposed under similar conditions. The contribution of excess complexes of interstitial atoms in the formation of cracks after plasma irradiation was evaluated.

To investigate the synergistic effects of fuel retention in tungsten, experiments were performed in the linear plasma device PSI-2 where the transient heat loads were applied by a high energy laser during the steady-state plasma operation. The impact on the deuterium (D) retention of simultaneous and sequential exposures to laser and plasma has been investigated. A significant increase of D retention, more than a factor of 12, has been observed during the simultaneous transient heat loads and plasma exposure. Successive exposures to transient heat loads and deuterium plasma also show the increased content of D-atoms by more than a factor of 3.6 in comparison to the pure plasma loading. In both cases the increase is most likely due to enhanced hydrogen clustering by the thermal shock exposures, due to an increased mobility of D atoms along the shock-induced cracks as well as to increased diffusion of D atoms into the W material caused by strong temperature gradients during the laser pulse exposure. Experiments were performed in the linear plasma device PSI-2 in order to investigate the synergistic effects of combined steady-state He-plasma and thermal shock exposure. Tungsten produced according to the ITER material specifications by Plansee SE, Austria, was loaded sequentially and simultaneously by steady-state He plasma and transient thermal loads induced by a laser beam. All tungsten samples were exposed to helium plasma for 40min at a base temperature of ca. 850°C and a flux of ca. 2.8×1022m−2s−1. Before, during and after the plasma exposure 1000 thermal shock pulses with a pulse duration of 1ms and a power density 0.76GW/m² were applied on the samples. The thermal shock exposure before and after plasma exposure was done at room temperature in order to investigate helium induced surface effects also within cracks. The obtained results show that the combination of He plasma with transient thermal shock events results in a severe modification such as reduced height or agglomeration of the sub-surface He-bubbles and of the created nanostructures, i.e. W-fuzz.

Beryllium as the plasma facing material for the first wall of ITER will be exposed to thermal, particle and neutron loads. In the frame of the European qualification program for ITER, two HIPped beryllium small scale flat-tile mock-ups consisting of a steel support structure, a CuCrZr/Cu heat sink and two beryllium tiles on top were manufactured by CEA. One mock-up was exposed to neutron irradiation up to 0.75dpa in beryllium in the RBT-6 fission reactor at Dimitrovgrad, Russia, while the other one was kept as reference. Furthermore, an identical mock-up was produced in Russia by manufacturing via electron beam induced rapid brazing and also exposed to the same neutron irradiation conditions. For qualification, all three flat-tile mock-ups were exposed to cyclic steady state heat loads in the electron beam facility JUDITH-1 up to a maximum of 3.0MW/m2. Thereby, each tile was loaded individually as the full loading area exceeds the limits of the facility.

Massive gas injections (MGIs) will be used in ITER to mitigate the strong damaging effect of full performance plasma disruptions on the plasma facing components. The MGI method transforms the stored plasma energy to radiation that is spread across the vacuum vessel with poloidal and toroidal asymmetries. This work investigated the impact of MGI like heat loading on the first wall armor material beryllium. ITER-relevant power densities of 90-260MWm−2in combination with pulse durations of 5-10ms were exerted onto the S-65 grade beryllium specimens in the electron beam facility JUDITH 1. All tested loading conditions led to noticeable surface morphology changes and in the expected worst case scenario, a crater with thermally induced cracks with a depth of up to ∼340µm formed in the loaded area. The level of destruction in the loaded area was strongly dependent on the pulse number but also on the formation of beryllium oxide. The cyclic melting of beryllium could lead to an armor thinning mechanism under the presence of melt motion driving forces such as surface tension, magnetic forces, and plasma pressure.

One of the numerous challenges of the demonstration power plant DEMO is the selection of appropriate plasma facing materials (PFMs) and this task is ultimately important to the success for DEMO. Low-activation stainless steel (e.g. EUROFER, P92), which is already intended as structural material, could also become a possible plasma facing material, e.g. for the first wall (FW). Therefore, the ferritic martensitic steel P92 was investigated under DEMO relevant loading conditions. An area of the sample surfaces was firstly molten by transient events with varying power densities (A=245MW/m2, B=708MW/m2) and afterwards simultaneously and sequentially exposed to thermal and particle loads. Surface modifications and pronounced microstructure changes were investigated dependent on the pre-exposure, loading sequence and power density. More precisely, it turned out that there was no connection between the loading sequence and the surface modifications for the preloaded A-samples contrary to preloaded B-samples. The preloaded B-samples exhibited surface roughening, melting and the formation of holes dependent on the loading sequence and power density.

In the current study, a solid state disc laser with a wavelength of 1030nm and maximum power of 5.3kW was used to melt the surface of pure tungsten samples (manufactured according to ITER specifications by Plansee SE). Several combinations of laser power and traverse velocity were tested, with the aim of eliminating any pre-existing cracks and forming a smooth and contiguous resolidified surface. Some of the samples were previously damaged by the electron beam simulation of 100 THLs of 0.38GW/m² intensity (Δt=1ms) on a 4×4mm² area in the JUDITH1 facility. These conditions were chosen because the resulting damage (crack network) and the crack depth (∼200–300µm) are known from previous identical material tests with subsequent cross sectioning. After laser melting, the samples were analyzed by SEM, laser profilometry and metallographic cross sectioning. A closed surface without cracks, an increased grain size and pronounced grain boundaries in the resolidified area were found. Profilometry proved that the surface height variations are within ±25µm from the original surface height, meaning a very smooth surface was achieved. These results successfully demonstrate the possibility of repairing a cracked tungsten surface by laser surface re-melting. This “laser repair” could be used to extend the lifetime of future plasma facing components.

A global heat flux model based on a fractional derivative of plasma pressure is proposed for the heat transport in fusion plasmas. The degree of the fractional derivative of the heat flux, α, is defined through the power balance analysis of the steady state. Deformation analysis based on multi-temporal Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) surveys has been applied for many years in commercial and academic problem domains. Downsides of this technique are the sequential data acquisition as well as its limited accuracy compared to terrestrial InSAR or InRAR based technologies that are currently gaining attention of the geodetic community. A drawback of these instruments is its relative operation method while beneficially measurements within the entire field of view can be carried out simultaneously at high frequencies. At first comparative studies between TLS and InRAR scanning are presented which have been carried out at a quarry. Over the course of roughly two hours six epochs have been measured where geometric changes of different degrees have been purposely made. In order to ensure comparability concerning the outcome, both instrument coordinate systems have been transformed into a common coordinate system by applying corner cube reflectors. At last an assisted ground based RADAR approach is presented where advantages of both applied techniques are incorporated.

Aims: To report the clinical and diagnostic findings of a patient with bilateral corneal deposits caused by an underlying monoclonal gammopathy. Methods: Slit-lamp biomicroscopy, confocal microscopy and additional serological tests were performed on a 35-year-old man presenting with bilateral crystalline corneal deposits. Results: The patient was diagnosed as having monoclonal gammopathy based on elevated levels of serum immunoglobulin G. Confocal microscopy showed highly reflective (protein) deposits throughout the entire cornea, with the highest density in the epithelium and anterior stromal keratocytes. Conclusions: Monoclonal gammopathy, a potential sign of a life-threatening disease, can lead to dense, bilateral corneal deposits. As such changes can occur long before ocular or systemic discomforts appear, an early diagnosis is crucial. Ophthalmologists should be aware of corneal deposits as potential warning signs of monoclonal gammopathy.
