1. Influence of Model Assumptions on Radial Flow Investigations in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Abstract: An effective way for the investigation of nuclear matter under the extreme conditions of high density and temperature is the study of nuclear fragmentation, realized in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions. The potential energy accumulated in the compression zone of the collision is converted into collective flow of matter in the later stages of the reaction. During the expansion of the system, fragments are formed in a clusterization process. In the final stage of the reaction, the fragments are moving along Coulomb trajectories and may deexcite by particle emission or secondary break-up.In order to verify the influence of the collective energy on the experimental energy spectra and extract quantitative information on the thermal and collective components, a model simulation was developed. In this procedure, the evolution of the disintegrating system in a multifragmentation process was described after the freeze-out stage with a Monte-Carlo approach. A reconstruction procedure for the fragment kinetic energies has shown the possibility to obtain the thermal and collective components from measured fragment spectra. In the present work, we scrutinize the model simulation for the evolution of the disintegrating system by testing the sensitivity of the collective expansion energy extraction on the model assumptions concerning the freeze-out characteristics, such as the size and shape of the freeze-out volume. Furthermore, thermal aspects of the early stage of the expansion are tested with an examination of the relationship between the assumption of the degree of thermalization of the emitting source and the extracted value of the collective energy.

Abstract: The new detector CHIMERA, in its final 4π configuration, has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania in January 2003. Beams of different energies ranging from protons to Au ions were delivered by the Tandem and the Super Conducting Cyclotron for nuclear reaction studies, in agreement with the approval of the Scientific Advisory Committee of LNS. Recent experimental results confirm very low energy thresholds of the trigger (below 0.5 MeV/nucleon), ensured within a wide dynamical range. Good characteristics of identification of light charged particles and heavy fragments have been obtained by using three detection techniques: Δ E-E , Δ E -time of flight, and the Pulse-Shape discrimination method. We present results of recent analysis concerning the production of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) in semi-peripheral collisions. Our results combined with theoretical Boltzmann-Nordheim-Vlasov simulations clearly demonstrate the presence of very fast processes of IMF production in the overlapping region of the target and projectile nuclei during re-separation, i.e. in the time scale comparable with the collision time. Evidence for slower, sequential-like production of IMF's is also shown.

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire NIM; Semiperipheral collisions in the $^{124}$Sn+${64}Ni reaction at 35 MeV/nucleon were studied using the forward part of the Charged Heavy Ion Mass and Energy Resolving Array. Nearly completely determined ternary events involving projectilelike fragments (PLF), targetlike fragments (TLF), and intermediate mass fragments (IMF) were selected. A new method of studying the reaction mechanism, focusing on the analysis of the correlations between relative velocities in the IMF+PLF and IMF+TLF subsystems, is proposed. The relative velocity correlations provide information on the time sequence and time scale of the neck fragmentation processes leading to production of IMFs. It is shown that the majority of light IMFs are produced within 40–80 fm/c after the system starts to reseparate. Heavy IMFs are formed at times of about 120 fm/c or later and can be viewed as resulting from two-step (sequential) neck rupture processes.

Abstract: A systematic study of isotopic effects in the break-up of projectile spectators at relativistic energies has been performed with the ALADiN spectrometer at the GSI laboratory. Searching for signals of criticality in the fragment production we have applied the model independent universal fluctuations theory already proposed to track criticality signals in multifragmentation to our data. Abstract: We review the main results obtained by the BRAHMS collaboration on the properties of hot and dense hadronic and partonic matter produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC. A particular focus of this paper is to discuss to what extent the results collected so far by BRAHMS, and by the other three experiments at RHIC, can be taken as evidence for the formation of a state of deconfined partonic matter, the so called quark-gluon-plasma (QGP). We also discuss evidence for a possible precursor state to the QGP, i.e. the proposed Color Glass Condensate., 32 pages, 18 figures

Abstract: We present the results obtained by the BRAHMS experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) for three colliding systems, namely: Au + Au , d + Au and p + p at [Formula: see text]. The main focus here is to give an overview of the main results on the reaction dynamics and on the properties of hot and high energy density matter produced in utra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. Measurement of particle production, particle spectra over a large rapidity interval as well as high pt measurements related to nuclear modification in Au + Au and d + Au collision are discussed. The observed number of charged particles produced per unit of rapidity at the central rapidity region indicates that a high energy density (> 5 GeV/fm3) system is created at the initial stage of the Au + Au reaction. From the particle spectra we deduced significant radial expansion (β ≈ 0.75) which is consistent with the large initial energy density. For Au + Au at η = 0 we observe the suppression of the high p T particles as compared to the elementary collisions, whereas for the d + Au reaction the Cronin type enhancement is observed. We also discuss to what extent these results can be taken as evidence for the quark gluon plasma (QGP). Finally, we present the nuclear modification effects in d + Au reaction as a function of rapidity and consider whether the observed suppression at forward rapidities constitutes sufficient evidence for a possible precursor state to the QGP, i.e. the Color Glass Condensate (CGC).

Abstract: We present a measurement of π − / π + , K − / K + and p ¯ / p from p + p collisions at s = 200 GeV over the rapidity range 0 y 3.4 . For p T 2.0 GeV / c we see no significant transverse momentum dependence of the ratios. All three ratios are independent of rapidity for y ≲ 1.5 and then steadily decline from y ∼ 1.5 to y ∼ 3 . The π − / π + ratio is below unity for y > 2.0 . The p ¯ / p ratio is very similar for p + p and 20% central Au + Au collisions at all rapidities. In the fragmentation region the three ratios seem to be independent of beam energy when viewed from the rest frame of one of the protons. Theoretical models based on quark–diquark breaking mechanisms overestimate the p ¯ / p ratio up to y ≲ 3 . Including additional mechanisms for baryon number transport such as baryon junctions leads to a better description of the data.

Abstract: Particle production of charged kaons in central Au+Au collisions at has been studied as a function of rapidity by the BRAHMS collaboration at RHIC. The kaon spectral shapes are described well by an exponential in transverse mass for the rapidity range of 0 ≤ yK ≤ 3.3 with smoothly decreasing inverse slopes as the rapidity increases. For the charged kaon to pion ratios, while there is no significant rapidity dependence for the K+/π+ ratio, the K−/π− ratio shows a significant decrease from y ≈ 1 towards higher rapidities. The systematics of K−/K+ and ratios in the measured rapidity range demonstrates a strongly correlated behaviour which can be described by thermal–statistical models.

Abstract: The BRAHMS experiment at RHIC was conceived to pursue the understanding of nuclear matter under extreme conditions by detailed measurements of charged hadrons over the widest possible range of rapidity and transverse momentum. The experiment consists of two spectrometers with complementary charged hadron detection capabilities as well as a series of global detectors for event characterization. A series of tracking detectors, time-of-flight arms and Cherenkov detectors enables momentum determination and particle identification over a wide range of rapidity and transverse momentum. Technical details and performance results are presented for the various detector subsystems. The performance of the entire system working together is shown to meet the goals of the experiment.

Abstract: Results from the BRAHMS Collaboration for the inaugural physics run with the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC), Au + Au collisions at √sNN = 130 GeV in the late summer of 2000, and some results of the very first data from the summer of 2001 at √sNN = 200 GeV are presented. Here the main focus is on the determination of the pseudorapidity distribution of charged particles as a function of collision centrality and on the measurement of the antiproton to proton and the K− to K+ ratios as a function of rapidity. The pseudorapidity density at midrapidity reaches dN(ch)/dη = 553 ± 36 for the most central collisions (0–5%) at √sNN = 130 GeV; the corresponding number for a higher energy is dN(ch)/dη = 632 ± 36, demonstrating an increase in multiplicity of about 14%. The measured antiproton/proton ratios peak at midrapidity around N()/N(p) = 0.64 ± 0.06 and drop to 0.41 ± 0.04 at y ≈ 2 for √sNN = 130 GeV reactions; the K− to K+ ratios are 0.90 ± 0.06 (y ≈ 0) and 0.83 ± 0.1 (y ≈ 2.5).

Abstract: International audience; The entrance channel dynamics of the 40Ca+40Ca reaction at 35A MeV is modeled with the recently developed QMD codes, EQMD and AMD-V. Drastic differences are observed in the entrance channel dynamics calculated by the two models. AMD-V with a Gogny force reproduces the experimental results over all. The importance of the introduction of the diffusion process to the centroid motion of wave packets is suggested.

Abstract: 124 Sn+ 64 Ni and 112 Sn+ 58 Ni reactions at 35 A MeV incident energy were studied by using the 688 Si–CsI telescopes of the forward part (1°⩽ θ lab ⩽30°) of CHIMERA multi-detector. The most central part, 1% of the total measured cross section was selected by means of a multidimensional analysis of the experimental observables. The detected isotopes of light fragments (3⩽ Z ⩽8) provided information on breakup temperatures of the emitting sources. The space–time structure of these sources was deduced from fragment correlations. An odd–even effect in the fragment production, enhanced by the isospin of the entrance channel, was observed. Freeze-out unbound neutron-to-proton relative densities for both studied reactions have been deduced, indicating for a possible isospin distillation mechanism related to a phenomenon of the liquid–gas phase transition in asymmetric systems.

19. The dependence of fission time-scales on fragment mass asymmetry in the 20Ne+165Ho reaction at 50A MeV

Abstract: The pre-scission and post-scission multiplicities of alpha particles were determined in coincidence with fission fragments for four windows of exit channel mass asymmetry in the reaction 20Ne+165Ho at 50A MeV. The technique used employed a kinematic analysis of the energy spectra of alpha particles as a function of the emission angle with respect to the fission axis. Using a procedure of fitting the experimental energy spectra with those resulting from a Monte Carlo simulation program, the total multiplicity of alpha particles was separated into pre-scission and post-scission components. Using the pre-scission and post-scission multiplicities, neutron multiplicity measurements and other empirical observations, both the initial excitation energy and the excitation energy at scission of the compound nucleus were determined. The pre-scission times in the de-excitation of a highly excited 178W compound nucleus with initial excition energy of 570 MeV were evaluated using statistical model calculations. Only a small decrease in scission time was derived for the most asymmetric events studied. The possible contribution of very damped deep inelastic processes is discussed.

Abstract: We investigate the importance of the quantum statistics and deexcitation of primary fragments on the isotope yield ratio temperature determination. A phenomenological formula is presented which allows derivation of the temperature of the decaying nuclear system at the freeze-out time from the measured double yield ratios of two isotope pairs. 21. Study of the violent collisions between63Cu+232Th at 35 MeV/nucleon

Abstract: A study of the decay of hot and heavy composite nuclei produced in the violent collisions between {sup 63}Cu and {sup 232}Th at 35A MeV is presented. The measurement of fission fragment correlations indicates that {approximately} 70{percent} of the projectile linear momentum can be transferred to the fissioning system. Heavy reaction products were observed at a laboratory angle of {theta}=6{degree} in coincidence with neutrons, light charged particles, and intermediate mass fragments. The dynamical aspects of the collisions between the projectile and target nuclei were investigated using the computer code CHIMERA which is based upon the molecular dynamics concept. Asymptotic characteristics of the reaction products were confronted with results of calculations of the tandem CHIMERA plus GEMINI codes. The data and model comparisons show that a composite system of mass as high as 275 amu and with an excitation energy {approximately} 1 GeV is formed in the most violent collisions. Some of the heavy reaction remnants are located on the fragment mass versus velocity plane inside the area where the evaporation residues resulting from the decay of the hot composite system are expected. A high neutron multiplicity associated with these events indicates their origin in the most dissipative events. Abstract: Observations of heavy remnants emitted at forward angles with high velocities and high associated particle multiplicities have been used to select central collisions of 35A MeV {sup 63}Cu with {sup 197}Au. The data indicate that these remnants, both fission fragments and evaporation residuelike products, result from the deexcitation of nuclei with A{approximately}225{endash}240 having excitation energies of {approximately} 800{endash}1300 MeV. Similar particle multiplicities are observed for both evaporative and fission decay channels. Modeling the results with hybrid codes which treat entrance channel dynamics followed by sequential statistical decay requires the inclusion of some delay in the fission channel to produce heavy remnants with mass A{ge}130, but the trend of the predicted velocities of these heavy remnants is different from that of the experiments. Calculations with a dynamic model based on the molecular dynamics approach have also been performed and lead to similar results. He and Li isotope yield ratios and the apparent temperatures derived from those ratios are similar to those previously reported for excited nuclei in this mass region. Temperatures derived from other yield ratios are also similar once a self-consistent treatment, taking into account population and decay of known excited states, is applied. The derived temperatures show little variation more » with excitation energy, suggesting that a limiting temperature may be reached at relatively low excitation energy, although the interpretation of this result and the determination of the actual initial value of this temperature is model dependent. Abstract: The BRAHMS collaboration has measured identified particle spectra from Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV. Rapidity densities are deduced from fits to the pion and kaon spectra. dN/dy is plotted as a function of rapidity and 4π yields and ratios are calculated. The signed K/π ratios are compared to values obtained at lower energies. We find that K–/π– increases monotonically from the AGS and SPS regimes, while K+/π+ is similar to what was found at the highest $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ at SPS. Abstract: The performance of the LAND neutron detector is studied. Using an event-mixing technique based on one-neutron data obtained in the S107 experiment at the GSI laboratory, we test the efficiency of various analytic tools used to determine the multiplicity and kinematic properties of detected neutrons. A new algorithm developed recently for recognizing neutron showers from spectator decays in the ALADIN experiment S254 is described in detail. Its performance is assessed in comparison with other methods. The properties of the observed neutron events are used to estimate the detection efficiency of LAND in this experiment., 16 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: The N/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at the GSI Schwerionen Synchrotron (SIS). Stable and radioactive Sn and La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. For the interpretation of the data, calculations with the statistical multifragmentation model for a properly chosen ensemble of excited sources were performed. The parameters of the ensemble, representing the variety of excited spectator nuclei expected in a participant-spectator scenario, are determined empirically by searching for an optimum reproduction of the measured fragment-charge distributions and correlations. An overall very good agreement is obtained. The possible modification of the liquid-drop parameters of the fragment description in the hot freeze-out environment is studied, and a significant reduction of the symmetry-term coefficient is found necessary to reproduce the mean neutron-to-proton ratios /Z and the isoscaling parameters of Z, 23 pages, 29 figures, published in Physical Review C

Abstract: The discriminant-analysis method has been applied to optimize the exotic-beam charge recognition in a projectile fragmentation experiment. The experiment was carried out at the GSI using the fragment separator (FRS) to produce and select the relativistic secondary beams, and the ALADIN setup to measure their fragmentation products following collisions with Sn target nuclei. The beams of neutron poor isotopes around 124La and 107Sn were selected to study the isospin dependence of the limiting temperature of heavy nuclei by comparing with results for stable 124Sn projectiles. A dedicated detector to measure the projectile charge upstream of the reaction target was not used, and alternative methods had to be developed. The presented method, based on the multivariate discriminant analysis, allowed to increase the efficacy of charge recognition up to about 90%, which was about 20% more than achieved with the simple scalar methods., Comment: 6 pages, 7 eps figures, elsart, submitted to Nucl. Abstract: The sizes, temperatures and free neutron to proton ratios of the initial interaction zones produced in the collisions of 40 MeV/nucleon $^{40}$Ar + $^{112}$Sn and 55 MeV/nucleon$^{27}$Al + $^{124}$Sn are derived using total detected neutron plus charged particle multiplicity as a measure of the impact parameter range and number of participant nucleons. The size of the initial interaction zone, determined from a coalescence model analysis, increases significantly with decreasing impact parameter. The temperatures and free neutron to proton ratios in the interaction zones are relatively similar for different impact parameter ranges and evolve in a similar fashion., 7 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: The N/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied in a recent experiment at the GSI laboratory with the ALADiN forward spectrometer coupled to the LAND neutron detector. Besides a primary beam of 124Sn, also secondary beams of 124La and 107Sn delivered by the FRS fragment separator have been used in order to extend the range of isotopic compositions of the produced spectator sources. With the achieved mass resolution of \Delta A/A \approx 1.5%, lighter isotopes with atomic numbers Z \le 10 are individually resolved. The presently ongoing analyses of the measured isotope yields focus on isoscaling and its relation to the properties of hot fragments at freeze-out and on the derivation of chemical freeze-out temperatures which are found to be independent of the isotopic composition of the studied systems. Abstract: Particle production of identified charged hadrons, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}},{K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}},p$, and $\overline{p}$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathit{NN}}}=$ 200 GeV, has been studied as a function of transverse momentum and collision centrality at $y=0$ and $y~1$ by the BRAHMS experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. Significant collective transverse flow at kinetic freeze-out has been observed in the collisions. The magnitude of the flow rises with the collision centrality. Proton and kaon yields relative to the pion production increase strongly as the transverse momentum increases and also increase with centrality. Particle yields per participant nucleon show a weak dependence on the centrality for all particle species. Hadron production remains relatively constant within one unit around midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathit{NN}}}=$ 200 GeV.

Abstract: We have measured rapidity densities dN/dy of pi+/- and K+/- over a broad rapidity range (-0.1 < y < 3.5) for central Au + Au collisions at square root(sNN) = 200 GeV. These data have significant implications for the chemistry and dynamics of the dense system that is initially created in the collisions. The full phase-space yields are 1660 +/- 15 +/- 133 (pi+), 1683 +/- 16 +/- 135 (pi-), 286 +/- 5 +/- 23 (K+), and 242 +/- 4 +/- 19 (K-). The systematics of the strange to nonstrange meson ratios are found to track the variation of the baryochemical potential with rapidity and energy. Landau-Carruthers hydrodynamics is found to describe the bulk transport of the pions in the longitudinal direction.

Abstract: Charged-particle pseudorapidity densities are presented for the $d+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}$ reaction at $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=200\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$ with $\ensuremath{-}4.2\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\le}4.2$. The results, from the BRAHMS experiment at BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, are shown for minimum-bias events and 0%--30%, 30%--60%, and 60%--80% centrality classes. Models incorporating both soft physics and hard, perturbative QCD-based scattering physics agree well with the experimental results. The data do not support predictions based on strong-coupling, semiclassical QCD. In the deuteron-fragmentation region the central 200 GeV data show behavior similar to full-overlap $d+\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}$ results at $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=19.4\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$.

Abstract: We report on a study of the transverse momentum dependence of nuclear modification factors ${R}_{d\mathrm{A}\mathrm{u}}$ for charged hadrons produced in $\mathrm{\text{deuteron}}\text{ }\text{ }+\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{\text{gold}}$ collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=200\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$, as a function of collision centrality and of the pseudorapidity ($\ensuremath{\eta}=0$, 1, 2.2, 3.2) of the produced hadrons. Abstract: Heavy ion collisions at RHIC energies (Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV) exhibit significant new features as compared to earlier experiments at lower energies. The reaction is characterized by a high degree of transparency of the collisions partners leading to the formation of a baryon-poor central region. In this zone, particle production occurs mainly from the stretching of the color field. The initial energy density is well above the one considered necessary for the formation of the Quark Gluon Plasma, QGP. The production of charged particles of various masses is consistent with chemical and thermal equilibrium. Recently, a suppression of the high transverse momentum component of hadron spectra has been observed in central Au+Au collisions. This can be explained by the energy loss experienced by leading partons in a medium with a high density of unscreened color charges. In contrast, such high $p_t$ jets are not suppressed in d+Au collisions suggesting that the high $p_t$ suppression is not due to initial state effects in the ultrarelativistic colliding nuclei., 15 pages, 11 figures. to appear in Nucl. Abstract: Charged-particle pseudorapidity densities are presented for the d + Au reaction at sqrt[s(NN)] = 200 GeV with -4.2or = etaor = 4.2. The results, from the BRAHMS experiment at BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, are shown for minimum-bias events and 0%-30%, 30%-60%, and 60%-80% centrality classes. Models incorporating both soft physics and hard, perturbative QCD-based scattering physics agree well with the experimental results. The data do not support predictions based on strong-coupling, semiclassical QCD. In the deuteron-fragmentation region the central 200 GeV data show behavior similar to full-overlap d+Au results at sqrt[s(NN)] = 19.4 GeV.

Abstract: A systematic study of isospin effects in the breakup of projectile spectators at relativistic energies has been performed with the ALADiN spectrometer at the GSI laboratory (Darmstadt). Four different projectiles 197Au, 124La, 124Sn and 107Sn, all with an incident energy of 600 AMeV, have been used, thus allowing a study of various combinations of masses and N/Z ratios in the entrance channel. The measurement of the momentum vector and of the charge of all projectile fragments with Z>1 entering the acceptance of the ALADiN magnet has been performed with the high efficiency and resolution achieved with the TP-MUSIC IV detector. The Rise and Fall behavior of the mean multiplicity of IMFs as a function of Zbound and its dependence on the isotopic composition has been determined for the studied systems. Other observables investigated so far include mean N/Z values of the emitted light fragments and neutron multiplicities. Abstract: An extensive experimental survey of the features of the disassembly of a small quasi-projectile system with $A \sim$ 36, produced in the reactions of 47 MeV/nucleon $^{40}$Ar + $^{27}$Al, $^{48}$Ti and $^{58}$Ni, has been carried out. Nuclei in the excitation energy range of 1-9 MeV/u have been investigated employing a new method to reconstruct the quasi-projectile source. At an excitation energy $\sim$ 5.6 MeV/nucleon many observables indicate the presence of maximal fluctuations in the de-excitation processes. The fragment topological structure shows that the rank sorted fragments obey Zipf's law at the point of largest fluctuations providing another indication of a liquid gas phase transition. The caloric curve for this system shows a monotonic increase of temperature with excitation energy and no apparent plateau. The temperature at the point of maximal fluctuations is $8.3 \pm 0.5$ MeV. Taking this temperature as the critical temperature and employing the caloric curve information we have extracted the critical exponents $\beta$, $\gamma$ and $\sigma$ from the data. Their values are also consistent with the values of the universality class of the liquid gas phase transition. Abstract: Light charged particle, (Z = 2), and intermediate-mass fragments, (2 124 Sn, 124 Xe + 124 Sn, 112 Sn reactions at 28 MeV/nucleon. With increasing centrality, the heavier 6 He isotope is found to be emitted closer to mid-rapidity than the lighter 3 He isotope. The emission becomes increasingly favorable for particles with higher charge, Z, indicating mid-rapidity region to be not only neutron rich, but also a rich source of heavy fragment (cluster) formation.

Abstract: A wide variety of observables indicate that maximal fluctuations in the disassembly of hot nuclei with A ~ 36 occur at an excitation energy of 5.6 +- 0.5 MeV/u and temperature of 8.3 +- 0.5 MeV. Associated with this point of maximal fluctuations are a number of quantitative indicators of apparent critical behavior. The associated caloric curve does not appear to show a flattening such as that seen for heavier systems. Abstract: The reaction systems, 64Zn + 58Ni, 64Zn + 92Mo, 64Zn + 197Au, at 26A, 35A and 47A MeV, have been studied both in experiments with a 4$\pi$ detector array, NIMROD, and with Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics model calculations employing effective interactions corresponding to soft and stiff equations of state (EOS). Direct experimental observables, such as multiplicity distributions, charge distributions, energy spectra and velocity spectra, have been compared in detail with those of the calculations and a reasonable agreement is obtained. The velocity distributions of $\alpha$ particles and fragments with Z >= 3 show distinct differences in calculations with the soft EOS and the stiff EOS. The velocity distributions of $\alpha$ particle and Intermediate Mass Fragments (IMF's) are best described by the stiff EOS. Neither of the above direct observables nor the strength of the elliptic flow are sensitive to changes in the in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross sections. A detailed analysis of the central collision events calculated with the stiff EOS revealed that multifragmentation with cold fragment emission is a common feature predicted for all reactions studied here. A possible multifragmentation scenario is presented; after the preequilibrium emission ceases in the composite system, cold light fragments are formed in a hotter gas of nucleons and stay cold until the composite system underdoes multifragmentation. For reaction with 197Au at 47A MeV a significant radial expansion takes place. For reactions with 58Ni and 92Mo at 47A MeV semi-transparency becomes prominent. The differing reaction dynamics drastically change the kinematic characteristics of emitted fragments. This scenario gives consistent explanations for many existing experimental results in the Fermi energy domain., Comment: 34 pages, 43 figures
