1. Ameliorating effect of 2′-fucosyllactose and 6′-sialyllactose on lipopolysaccharide-induced intestinal inflammation

Abstract: ABSTRACT: Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) affect gut microbiota during neonatal development, particularly with respect to the immune system. Bovine milk-based infant formulas have low oligosaccharide contents. Thus, efforts to fortify infant formulas with HMO are being undertaken. Two major HMO, 2′-fucosyllactose (2′-FL) and 6′-sialyllactose (6′-SL), exert anti-inflammatory effects; however, the associations between anti-inflammatory effects induced by 2′-FL and 6′-SL cotreatment and gut microbiota composition and metabolite modulation remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the effects of a mixture of these HMO. To determine the optimal HMO ratio for anti-inflammatory effects and elucidate its mode of action, LPS-induced inflammatory HT-29 epithelial cells and intestinal-inflamed suckling mice were treated with various mixtures of 2′-FL and 6′-SL. A 2′-FL:6′-SL ratio of 5:1 was identified as the most effective pretreatment HMO mixture in vitro; thus, this ratio was selected and used for low-, middle-, and high-dose treatments for subsequent in vivo studies. In vivo, high-dose HMO treatment restored LPS-induced inflammation symptoms, such as BW loss, colon length reduction, histological structural damage, and intestinal gene expression related to inflammatory responses. High-dose HMO was the only treatment that modulated the major phyla Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes and the genera Ihubacter, Mageeibacillus, and Saccharofermentans. These changes in microbial composition were correlated with intestinal inflammation-related gene expression and short-chain fatty acid production. To our knowledge, our study is the first to report the effects of Ihubacter, Mageeibacillus, and Saccharofermentans on short-chain fatty acid levels, which can subsequently affect inflammatory cytokine and tight junction protein levels. Conclusively, the HMO mixture exerted anti-inflammatory effects through changes in microbiota and metabolite production. These findings suggest that supplementation of infant formula with HMO may benefit formula-fed infants by forming unique microbiota contributing to neonatal development. more...

3. Effectiveness of immunoglobulin replacement therapy in preventing infections in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a systematic review

Abstract: Abstract Purpose Immunoglobulin replacement therapy is a standard treatment for patients with antibody production deficiencies, which is of interest in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This systematic review, registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021281118), assessed the current literature regarding immunoglobulin replacement therapy on COPD clinical outcomes in patients with low immunoglobulin G (IgG) serum concentrations. Methods Literature searches conducted from inception to August 23, 2021, in databases including MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL. Population (sex, age, comorbidities), baseline clinical characteristics (pulmonary function testing results, IgG levels), and outcome (hospitalizations, emergency department visits) were extracted after title/abstract and full text screening. The Cochrane risk of bias assessment form was used for risk of bias assessment of randomized controlled trials and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) assessment was used for pre and post studies. Results A total of 1381 studies were identified in the preliminary search, and 874 records were screened after duplicates were removed. Screening 77 full texts yielded four studies that were included in the review. Conclusion It is unclear whether immune globulin replacement therapy reduces acute exacerbation frequency and severity in COPD. Current evidence suggests that it is worth considering, but better developed protocols for administration of immune globulin supplementation is required for future randomized controlled trials. more...

Abstract: Abstract JSNS $$^2$$ 2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that searches for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $$\bar{\nu }_{\mu } \rightarrow \bar{\nu }_{e}$$ ν ¯ μ → ν ¯ e appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. The JSNS $$^2$$ 2 experiment performed data taking from 2021. In this manuscript, a study of the accidental background is presented. The rate of the accidental background is ( $$9.29\pm 0.39) \times 10^{-8}$$ 9.29 ± 0.39 ) × 10 - 8 /spill with 0.75 MW beam power and comparable to the expected number of signal events. more...

5. Detection of novel drug-adverse drug reaction signals in rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis: analysis of Korean real-world biologics registry data

Abstract: Abstract This study aimed to detect signals of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and targeted therapies in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients. Utilizing the KOrean College of Rheumatology BIOlogics & Targeted Therapy Registry (KOBIO) data, we calculated relative risks, excluded previously reported drug-ADR pairs, and externally validated remaining pairs using US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and single centre’s electronic health records (EHR) data. Analyzing data from 2279 RA and 1940 AS patients, we identified 35 significant drug-ADR pairs in RA and 26 in AS, previously unreported in drug labels. Among the novel drug-ADR pairs from KOBIO, 15 were also significant in the FAERS data. Additionally, 2 significant drug-laboratory abnormality pairs were found in RA using CDM MetaLAB analysis. Our findings contribute to the identification of 14 novel drug-ADR signals, expanding our understanding of potential adverse effects related to biological DMARDs and targeted therapies in RA and AS. Abstract: The Pohang-Accelerator-Laboratory X-ray free-electron laser (PAL-XFEL) emits intense, ultra-short X-ray pulses, enabling studies on ultra-small and -fast dynamics in various fields. We designed and fabricated silicon p-intrinsic-n photo-diodes (PDs) to detect strong X-ray pulses. Four types of PDs were fabricated with different metal shapes on the P- and N-sides. The fabrication process was split into two parts, based on the thickness of the Al metal and anti-reflective coating (ARC) layers, to evaluate the fabrication process feasibility and the detection performance. A beam test was performed with X-ray pulses at the soft X-ray beamline of the PAL-XFEL using the proposed PDs and a commercial PD. The test was designed to evaluate the effects of the metal and ARC layers and compare the detection efficiency depending on the X-ray entrance side and signal readout side. The waveforms were saved during the test and integrated to obtain the charges. Thereafter, they were analyzed and normalized, and compared. Abstract: Abstract Neutrino elastic scattering observation with NaI (NEON) is an experiment designed to detect neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering using reactor electron antineutrinos. NEON is based on an array of six NaI(Tl) crystals with a total mass of 13.3 kg, located at the tendon gallery that is 23.7 m away from a reactor core with a thermal power of 2.8 GW in the Hanbit nuclear power complex. The installation of the NEON detector was completed in December 2020, and since May 2021, the detector has acquired data at full reactor power. Based on the observed light yields of the NaI crystals of approximately 22, number of photoelectrons per unit keV electron-equivalent energy (keVee), and 6 counts/kg/keV/day background level at 2–6 keVee energy, coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE $$\nu $$ ν NS) observation sensitivity is evaluated as more than 3 $$\sigma $$ σ assuming 1-year reactor-on and 100 days reactor-off data, 0.2 keVee energy threshold, and 7 counts/keV/kg/day background in the signal region of 0.2 $$-$$ - 0.5 keVee. This paper describes the design of the NEON detector, including the shielding arrangement, configuration of NaI(Tl) crystals, and associated operating systems. Abstract: This study experimentally investigated various spraying modes in electrospraying, an atomization method in which a high voltage is applied to the auxiliary device at the tip of the nozzle. The spraying modes were generated depending on the experimental parameters (voltage, current, and flow rate) and characteristics of two test solutions (S and C), which were a mixture of ethanol, glycerol, citric acid, and water. Solution C had a higher electrical conductivity than solution S. Eleven spray modes were identified in the study. From a comparison of the spray modes, a maximum Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of the cone jet of solution S was 1.7 times that of solution S. The standard deviation of SMD for the unstable, rotating-jet, and pulsed-jet modes were more than two times that for the cone-jet mode. With an increase in flow rate in the cone jet, the SMD and SMD standard deviation of solution C increased linearly, and the SMD value of solution C was ~5% lower than that of solution B. The SMD standard deviations for both S and C solutions were small at low flow rates, and the standard deviation for solution C (with high conductivity) was smaller than that of solution S. For a given SMD, the current associated with solution C was higher than that associated with solution S. The study presented the comprehensive data for SMD, SMD standard deviation, and current in an electrospray system for the two fluids of different electrical conductivities under various experimental conditions. more...

Abstract: Abstract JSNS $$^2$$ 2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that is searching for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $${\bar{\nu }}_{\mu } \rightarrow {\bar{\nu }}_{e}$$ ν ¯ μ → ν ¯ e appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. Before dedicated data taking in the first-half of 2021, we performed a commissioning run for 10 days in June 2020. Using the data obtained in this commissioning run, in this paper, we present an estimate of the correlated background which imitates the $${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$$ ν ¯ e signal in a sterile neutrino search. 15. Synergistic enhancement of urban haze by nitrate uptake into transported hygroscopic particles in the Asian continental outflow

Abstract: Haze pollution is affected by local air pollutants, regional transport of background particles and precursors, atmospheric chemistry related to secondary aerosol formation, and meteorological conditions conducive to physical, dynamical, and chemical processes. In the large, populated and industrialized areas like the Asian continental outflow region, the combination of regional transport and local stagnation often exacerbates urban haze pollution. However, the detailed chemical processes underlying the enhancement of urban haze induced by the combined effect of local emissions and transported remote pollutants are still unclear. Here, we demonstrate an important role of transported hygroscopic particles in increasing local inorganic aerosols, by studying the chemical composition of PM2.5 collected between October 2012 and June 2014 in Seoul, a South Korean megacity in the Asian continental outflow region, using the ISORROPIA II thermodynamic model. PM2.5 measured under the condition of regional transport from the upwind source areas in China was higher in mass concentration and richer in secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) species (SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+) and aerosol liquid water (ALW) compared to that measured under non-transport conditions. The secondary inorganic species and ALW were both increased, particularly in cases with high PM2.5 levels, and this indicates inorganic species as a major driver of hygroscopicity. We conclude that the urban haze pollution in a continental outflow region like Seoul, particularly during the cold season, can be exacerbated by ALW in the transported particles, which enhances the nitrate partitioning into the particle phase in NOx- and NH3-rich urban areas. This study reveals the synergistic effect of remote and local sources on urban haze pollution in the downwind region and provides insight into the nonlinearity of domestic and foreign contributions to receptor PM2.5 concentrations in numerical air quality models. more...

Abstract: Abstract The Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation (RENO) experiment has been taking data using two identical liquid scintillator detectors since August 2011. The experiment has observed the disappearance of reactor neutrinos in their interactions with free protons, followed by neutron capture on hydrogen (n-H). Based on 1500 live days of data taken with 16.8 GW th reactors at the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant in Korea, the near (far) detector observes 567690 (90747) electron antineutrino candidate events with the n-H data. This provides an independent measurement of neutrino mixing angle θ 13 and a consistency check on the validity of the result obtained from the data with neutron capture on Gadolinium (n-Gd). Furthermore, it provides an important cross-check on the systematic uncertainties of the n-Gd measurement. Based on a rate-only analysis, we obtain sin2 2θ 13 = 0.086 ± 0.008(stat.) ± 0.014(syst.). Abstract: BACKGROUND: The severity of non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) can be classified based on an assessment of the patient´s body mass index, age, presence of cavity, erythrocyte sediment rate and sex (BACES). In this study, changes in lung function according to disease severity were analysed.METHODS: Patients with NTM-PD who underwent at least two lung function tests between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2021, were classified according to their BACES score into mild (0–1), moderate (2–3) and severe (4–5) groups, and changes in lung function were assessed using BACES scores.RESULTS: A total of 354 patients were divided into three groups: mild (n = 108), moderate (n = 216) and severe (n = 30). As disease severity increased, the decrease in forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC) and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) was greater: respectively 26.4 mL/year, 31.3 mL/year and 35.7 mL/year in case of FEV1 (P for trend = 0.002); 18.9 mL/year, 25.5 mL/year and 48.9 mL/year in case of FVC (P for trend = 0.002); and 0.7%/year, 1.3%/year and 2.5%/year for DLCO (P for trend = 0.023) in the mild, moderate and severe groups.CONCLUSION: The decrease in lung function in NTM-PD was correlated with disease severity. more...

Abstract: In high-field magnetic resonance imaging, water-fat separation in the presence of B0 field inhomogeneity is an important research. Various field map estimation techniques that use three-point multi-echo acquisitions have been developed for reliable water-fat separation. Among the numerous techniques, iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least squares estimation (IDEAL) has gained considerable popularity as an iterative method for acquiring high-quality water and fat images. Some of the goals for the IDEAL are to obtain an initial estimate of the field map and to ensure that the algorithm arrives at the correct solution that is close to the true value. However, due to the worsened B0 inhomogeneity at high field, IDEAL cannot adjust for meaningful field map estimation, particularly for a large field of view. Previously, to improve the robustness of this estimation, a region-growing technique was developed to take advantage of the 2D linear extrapolation procedure through the seed point set by the median value in the target object. There are some limitations with this approach, for example, the dependence on the initial seed point such as its number, intensity, and position. In this paper, we introduce a robust method called the multiple region-growing scheme that does not need to consider parameters related to accuracy. As a result of the proposed method, we obtained a robust field map estimation that can be applied in high fields with an average accuracy of 91.9% higher than the existing method. more...

Abstract: In this paper, the remote sensoring device for controlling the avatar in the virtual reality (VR) game which is being worn by the head-mounted display (HMD) was investigated. This remote sensoring device, which people use while sitting on a swivel chair, minimizes sensor attachment, and removes parameters for pelvic rotation angle in standing position. The rotating chair, which also functions as the center-weighted stationary belt of the conventional treadmill-type input device, has the advantage that the head trekking function mounted on the HMD can be utilized freely and the balance feeling of the user can be stabilized in a sitting position on the chair. In this posture, the sensoring input device was developed using Bluetooth wireless communication to freely turn and walk. Using the data from the inertial measurement device, which was a combination of the speedometer and the accelerometer, a sensoring input device for recognizing the user's leg motion was created. The running speed of the recognized leg was designed to be close to the average walking speed and the running speed of the person, so that the running and walking in the game can be separated and implemented. The motion velocity of the leg would be calculated through each speedometer measurement, the value would be integrated, and the error would be corrected by the Kalman filter to obtain the user's knee angle. In other words, applying a Kalman filter to data obtained from sensors, such as accelerometers, angular speedometers, and geomagnetic sensor can determine the direction of motion of the legs. This integrated system is called the attitude and heading references system. The knee joint angle and the value of the pressure sensor were used as threshold values to determine the state of the leg when walking, and the angular velocity derived from the movement of the leg was used to determine the moving speed of the avatar in the VR game. The recognition rate was calculated by comparing the number of times the user attempts to move the avatar by moving the avatar and the number of times the avatar of the game was moved, and the distance of the avatar was measured to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. more...

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to develop a customized diving computer that is interlocked with a textile type sensor attached to a suit to enhance the safety factor of a diver and a monitoring system to help diver safety management. The development of this diving computer is largely divided into three stages. The first is to develop a function to check the status of the diver in conjunction with the textile type wearable sensor attached to the suit. Second, the development of a diving computer is based on Android OS based on the existing closed OS. The third is the development of actual diving computer hardware focusing on waterproof function. This course aims to focus on safety factors of the diver, to collect biometric information through a wearable sensor attached to the diver suit, to analyze it in the diving computer, and to provide a customized diving guide. The performance evaluation of the result was conducted through the usability evaluation of the diving computer, and the safety and efficiency were verified through the overall satisfaction and the functional evaluation of 92.7%. 23. Effects of meteorology and emissions on urban air quality: a quantitative statistical approach to long-term records (1999–2016) in Seoul, South Korea

Abstract: Together with emissions of air pollutants and precursors, meteorological conditions play important roles in local air quality through accumulation or ventilation, regional transport, and atmospheric chemistry. In this study, we extensively investigated multi-timescale meteorological effects on the urban air pollution using the long-term measurements data of PM10, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3 and meteorological variables over the period of 1999–2016 in Seoul, South Korea. The long-term air quality data were decomposed into trend-free short-term components and long-term trends by the Kolmogorov–Zurbenko filter, and the effects of meteorology and emissions were quantitatively isolated using a multiple linear regression with meteorological variables. In terms of short-term variability, intercorrelations among the pollutants and meteorological variables and composite analysis of synoptic meteorological fields exhibited that the warm and stagnant conditions in the migratory high-pressure system are related to the high PM10 and primary pollutant, while the strong irradiance and low NO2 by high winds at the rear of a cyclone are related to the high O3. In terms of long-term trends, decrease in PM10 (−1.75 µg m−3 yr−1) and increase in O3 (+0.88 ppb yr−1) in Seoul were largely contributed by the meteorology-related trends (−0.94 µg m−3 yr−1 for PM10 and +0.47 ppb yr−1 for O3), which were attributable to the subregional-scale wind speed increase. Comparisons with estimated local emissions and socioeconomic indices like gross domestic product (GDP) growth and fuel consumptions indicate probable influences of the 2008 global economic recession as well as the enforced regulations from the mid-2000s on the emission-related trends of PM10 and other primary pollutants. Change rates of local emissions and the transport term of long-term components calculated by the tracer continuity equation revealed a decrease in contributions of local emissions to the primary pollutants including PM10 and an increase in contributions of local secondary productions to O3. The present results not only reveal an important role of synoptic meteorological conditions on the episodic air pollution events but also give insights into the practical effects of environmental policies and regulations on the long-term air pollution trends. Abstract: Abstract Two dimensional layered organic-inorganic halide perovskites offer a wide variety of novel functionality such as solar cell and optoelectronics and magnetism. Self-assembly of these materials using solution process (ex. spin coating) makes crystalline thin films synthesized at ambient environment. However, flexibility of organic layer also poses a structure stability issue in perovskite thin films against environment factors (ex. moisture). In this study, we investigate the effect of solvents and moisture on structure and property in the (C6H5(CH2)2NH3)2(Cu, Mn)Cl4 (Cu-PEA, Mn-PEA) perovskite thin films spin-coated on Si wafer using three solvents (H2O, MeOH, MeOH + H2O). A combination of x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) show that relative humidity (RH) has a profound effect on perovskite thin films during sample synthesis and storage, depending on the kind of solvent used. The ones prepared using water (Cu-PEA:H2O, Mn-PEA:H2O) show quite different behavior from the other cases. According to time-dependent XRD, reversible crystalline-amorphous transition takes place depending on RH in the former cases, whereas the latter cases relatively remain stable. Abstract: Three-dimensional digital documentation is an important technique for the maintenance and monitoring of cultural heritage sites. This study focuses on the three-dimensional digital documentation of the Magoksa Temple, Republic of Korea, using a combination of terrestrial laser scanning and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry. Terrestrial laser scanning mostly acquired the vertical geometry of the buildings. In addition, the digital orthoimage produced by UAV photogrammetry had higher horizontal data acquisition rate than that produced by terrestrial laser scanning. Thus, the scanning and UAV photogrammetry were merged by matching 20 corresponding points and an absolute coordinate system was established using seven ground control points. The final, complete threedimensional shape had perfect horizontal and vertical geometries. This study demonstrates the potential of integrating terrestrial laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry for three-dimensional digital documentation. Abstract: The air quality of the megacities in populated and industrialized regions like East Asia is affected by both local and regional emission sources. The combined effect of regional transport and local emissions on multiday haze was investigated through a synthetic analysis of PM2. 5 sampled at both an urban site in Seoul, South Korea and an upwind background site on Deokjeok Island over the Yellow Sea during a severe multiday haze episode in late February 2014. Inorganic components and carbonaceous species of daily PM2. 5 samples were measured, and gaseous pollutants, local meteorological factors, and synoptic meteorological conditions were also determined. A dominance of fine-mode particles (PM2. 5 ∕ PM10 ∼ 0.8), a large secondary inorganic fraction (76 %), high OC ∕ EC (> 7), and highly oxidized aerosols (oxygen-to-carbon ratio of ∼ 0.6 and organic-mass-to-carbon ratio of ∼ 1.9) under relatively warm, humid, and stagnant conditions characterize the multiday haze episode in Seoul; however, the early and late stages of the episode show different chemical compositions of PM2. 5. High concentrations of sulfate in both Seoul and the upwind background in the early stage suggest a significant regional influence on the onset of the multiday haze. At the same time, high concentrations of nitrate and organic compounds in Seoul, which are local and highly correlated with meteorological factors, suggest the contribution of local emissions and secondary formation under stagnant meteorological conditions to the haze. A slow eastward-moving high-pressure system from southern China to the East China Sea induces the regional transport of aerosols and potential gaseous precursors for secondary aerosols from the North China Plain in the early stage but provides stagnant conditions conducive to the accumulation and the local formation of aerosols in the late stage. A blocking ridge over Alaska that developed during the episode hinders the zonal propagation of synoptic-scale systems and extends the haze period to several days. This study provides chemical insights into haze development sequentially by regional transport and local sources, and shows that the synoptic condition plays an important role in the dynamical evolution of long-lasting haze in the Asian continental outflow region. more...

Abstract: The experimental boiling critical heat flux (CHF) behavior of CeO2 nanoparticles coated surface under various deposition condition was experimentally measured. The CHF behavior of CeO2 nanoparticles coated surface was analyzed based on coupled analysis of surface wettability and capillarity. The surface conditions were modulated by changing the volume concentration and deposition time during the nanoparticles coating process. The convex shaped CHF behavior was observed along with the volume concentration of nanofluid. The analysis based on a single parameter such as surface wettability and capillarity couldn’t explain the complex CHF behavior. The novel way to explain the complex CHF behaviors of CeO2 nanoparticles coated surface is proposed. The model in this study considered the coupling behavior of surface rewetting and liquid transport by capillary wicking motion through the CHF enhancement partitioning. 30. Sources and atmospheric processing of winter aerosols in Seoul, Korea: insights from real-time measurements using a high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer

Abstract: Highly time-resolved chemical characterization of nonrefractory submicrometer particulate matter (NR-PM1) was conducted in Seoul, the capital and largest metropolis of Korea, using an Aerodyne high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS). The measurements were performed during winter, when elevated particulate matter (PM) pollution events are often observed. This is the first time that detailed real-time aerosol measurement results have been reported from Seoul, Korea, and they reveal valuable insights into the sources and atmospheric processes that contribute to PM pollution in this region. The average concentration of submicron aerosol (PM1 = NR-PM1+ black carbon (BC)) was 27.5 µg m−3, and the total mass was dominated by organics (44 %), followed by nitrate (24 %) and sulfate (10 %). The average atomic ratios of oxygen to carbon (O / C), hydrogen to carbon (H / C), and nitrogen to carbon (N / C) of organic aerosols (OA) were 0.37, 1.79, and 0.018, respectively, which result in an average organic mass-to-carbon (OM / OC) ratio of 1.67. The concentrations (2.6–90.7 µg m−3) and composition of PM1 varied dynamically during the measurement period due to the influences of different meteorological conditions, emission sources, and air mass origins. Five distinct sources of OA were identified via positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis of the HR-ToF-AMS data: vehicle emissions represented by a hydrocarbon-like OA factor (HOA, O / C = 0.06), cooking activities represented by a cooking OA factor (COA, O / C = 0.14), wood combustion represented by a biomass burning OA factor (BBOA, O / C = 0.34), and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) represented by a semivolatile oxygenated OA factor (SV-OOA, O / C = 0.56) and a low-volatility oxygenated OA factor (LV-OOA, O / C = 0.68). On average, primary OA (POA = HOA + COA + BBOA) accounted for 59 % the OA mass, whereas SV-OOA and LV-OOA contributed 15 and 26 %, respectively. Our results indicate that air quality in Seoul during winter is influenced strongly by secondary aerosol formation, with sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, SV-OOA, and LV-OOA together accounting for 64 % of the PM1 mass during this study. However, aerosol sources and composition were found to be significantly different between clean and polluted periods. During stagnant periods with low wind speed (WS) and high relative humidity (RH), PM concentration was generally high (average ±1σ = 43.6 ± 12.4 µg m−3) with enhanced fractions of nitrate (27 %) and SV-OOA (8 %), which suggested a strong influence from local production of secondary aerosol. Low-PM loading periods (12.6 ± 7.1 µg m−3) tended to occur under higher-WS and lower-RH conditions and appeared to be more strongly influenced by regional air masses, as indicated by higher mass fractions of sulfate (12 %) and LV-OOA (20 %) in PM1. Overall, our results indicate that PM pollutants in urban Korea originate from complex emission sources and atmospheric processes and that their concentrations and composition are controlled by various factors, including meteorological conditions, local anthropogenic emissions, and upwind sources. more...

Abstract: Water is the most abundant component of atmospheric fine aerosol. However, despite rapid progress, multiphase chemistry involving wet aerosols is still poorly understood. In this work, we report results from smog chamber photooxidation of glyoxal- and OH-containing ammonium sulfate or sulfuric acid particles in the presence of NOx and O3 at high and low relative humidity. Particles were analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS). During the 3 h irradiation, OH oxidation products of glyoxal that are also produced in dilute aqueous solutions (e.g., oxalic acids and tartaric acids) were formed in both ammonium sulfate (AS) aerosols and sulfuric acid (SA) aerosols. However, the major products were organonitrogens (CHNO), organosulfates (CHOS), and organonitrogen sulfates (CHNOS). These were also the dominant products formed in the dark chamber, indicating non-radical formation. In the humid chamber (> 70 % relative humidity, RH), two main products for both AS and SA aerosols were organonitrates, which appeared at m ∕ z− 147 and 226. They were formed in the aqueous phase via non-radical reactions of glyoxal and nitric acid, and their formation was enhanced by photochemistry because of the photochemical formation of nitric acid via reactions of peroxy radicals, NOx and OH during the irradiation. more...

Abstract: In plasmas with strong shape and large pedestal width, like DIII-D high poloidal-beta discharges, the eigenvalue spectrum of the peeling ballooning mode (PBM) is shown to shift to the very low-n regime near one, where n is the toroidal mode number. This peeling-type eigenvalue spectrum has a further shift to n = 1, thus being smoothly connected to the n = 1 external kink mode (EKM), as the normalized beta (βN) increases. Once this connection occurs, the mode takes a mixture form of the PBM and EKM with its mode structure varying from the PBM-like to the EKM-like one as βN increases. The mode stability also becomes sensitive to both the local pedestal gradient and global βN, thus allowing an anti-correlation between the two driving forces. These results appear to provide a qualitative explanation of the two unexpected features observed in the DIII-D high poloidal-beta discharges, that is, the dominance of the n = 1 mode in the edge-localized-modes and the negative correlation between the pedestal height and the internal transport barrier strength. more...

Abstract: Background: Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a receptor targeted by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is highly expressed in the nasal mucosa. Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) shows diverse endotypes and is aggravated by viral infection. Whether viral stimulation and CRS endotype influence ACE2 expression remains unclear. We investigated the expression of ACE2 and the transmembrane protease, serine 2 (TMPRSS2), which mediate the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into cells, and assessed polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly[I:C])-induced changes based on CRS endotype. Methodology: ACE2 and TMPRSS2 expression was evaluated based on CRS phenotype, endotype, and tissue type. Correlations between ACE2/TMPRSS2 expression and inflammatory mediators in nasal polyps (NP) were examined. Air-liquid interface culture experiments were performed to assess the effects of major cytokines or poly(I:C) stimulation on ACE2/TMPRSS2 expression in primary epithelial cells from healthy nasal mucosa, eosinophilic NP (ENP), and non-eosinophilic NP (NENP). Results: In primary nasal epithelial cells, interleukin (IL)-13 decreased ACE2 expression but increased TMPRSS2. Eosinophilic CRS showed lower ACE2 expression than non-eosinophilic CRS, regardless of CRS phenotype. CRS endotype was an independent factor associated with ACE2/TMPRSS2 expression in NP. Serum and tissue eosinophilic marker levels were inversely correlated with ACE2 expression, whereas tissue neutrophilic marker levels and ACE2 expression were positively correlated in NP. ACE2 expression was suppressed in ENP tissues; however, a combination of poly(I:C) and IL-13 induced ACE2/TMPRSS2 upregulation in ENP. Abstract: Nd-Fe-B-type die-upset magnet with high electrical resistivity was prepared by doping of eutectic DyF3–LiF salt mixture. Mixture of melt-spun Nd-Fe-B flakes (MQU-F: Nd13.6Fe73.6Co6.6Ga0.6B5.6) and eutectic binary (DyF3–LiF) salt (25 mol% DyF3 – 75 mol% LiF) was hot-pressed and then die-upset. By adding the eutectic salt mixture (> 4 wt%), electrical resistivity of the die-upset magnet was enhanced to over 400 μΩ.cm compared to 190 μΩ.cm of the un-doped magnet. Remarkable enhancement of the electrical resistivity was attributed to homogeneous and continuous coverage of the interface between flakes by the easily melted eutectic salt dielectric mixture. It was revealed that active substitution of the Nd atoms in neighboring flakes by the Dy atoms from the added (DyF3–LiF) salt mixture had occurred during such a quick thermal processing of hot-pressing and die-upsetting. This Dy substitution led to coercivity enhancement in the die-upset magnet doped with the eutectic (DyF3–LiF) salt mixture. Abstract: Spatiotemporal characteristics of surface ozone (O3) variations over South Korea are investigated with consideration of meteorological factors and timescales based on the Kolmogorov–Zurbenko filter (KZ filter), using measurement data at 124 air quality monitoring sites and 72 weather stations for the 12 yr period of 1999–2010. In general, O3 levels at coastal cities are high due to dynamic effects of the sea breeze while those at the inland and Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) cities are low due to the NOx titration by local precursor emissions. We examine the meteorological influences on O3 using a combined analysis of the KZ filter and linear regressions between O3 and meteorological variables. We decomposed O3 time series at each site into short-term, seasonal, and long-term components by the KZ filter and regressed on meteorological variables. Impact of temperature on the O3 levels is significantly high in the highly populated SMA and inland region, but low in the coastal region. In particular, the probability of high O3 occurrence doubles with 4 °C of temperature increase in the SMA during high O3 months (May–October). This implies that those regions will experience frequent high O3 events in a future warming climate. In terms of short-term variation, the distribution of high O3 probability classified by wind direction shows the effect of both local precursor emissions and long-range transport from China. In terms of long-term variation, the O3 concentrations have increased by +0.26 ppbv yr−1 (parts per billion by volume) on nationwide average, but their trends show large spatial variability. Singular value decomposition analyses further reveal that the long-term temporal evolution of O3 is similar to that of nitrogen dioxide, although the spatial distribution of their trends is different. This study will be helpful as a reference for diagnostics and evaluation of regional- and local-scale O3 and climate simulations, and as a guide to appropriate O3 control policy in South Korea. more...

44. Long-term trend of CO2 and ocean acidification in the surface water of the Ulleung Basin, the East/Japan Sea inferred from the underway observational data

Abstract: Anthropogenic carbon is responsible for both global warming and ocean acidification. Efforts are underway to understand the role of ocean in a high CO2 world on a global context. However, marginal seas received little attention despite their significant contribution to biogeochemical cycles. Here we report the CO2 increase and ocean acidification in the surface waters of the Ulleung Basin (UB) of the East/Japan Sea, and possible causes are discussed. Fourteen observations of surface fCO2 were made in the period from 1995 to 2009. The contribution of temperature variation to the seasonality of fCO2 was almost equivalent to the non-thermal effect in the UB. However, the difference of relative contribution with the season makes two seasonal peaks of fCO2 in the surface water of the UB. Non-thermal effect contributed to the surface fCO2 drawdown in summer, whereas the surface fCO2 elevation in winter. The decadal trend of fCO2 increment was estimated by harmonic analysis. The estimated rates of increase of fCO2 were 1.8 ± 0.4 μatm yr−1 for the atmosphere and 2.7 ± 1.1 μatm yr−1 for the surface water. The ocean acidification trend, calculated from total alkalinity and fCO2, was estimated to be −0.03 ± 0.02 pH units decade−1. These rates seem to be higher than observations at most other ocean time-series sites during the same period of time. Abstract: Napier grass (Cenchrus purpureus Schum.) is one of the highest yielding tropical C4 forage grasses and a promising candidate feedstock for the production of biofuel. Genetic engineering and genome editing have tremendous potential for crop improvement and require the establishment of a transformation protocol. In this study, transgenic Napier grass was generated by introducing a minimal cassette (MC) encoding the antibiotic resistance gene nptII with biolistic gene transfer into embryogenic callus. Paromomycin was superior to geneticin as a selective agent in the selection of transgenic calli. Two high-biomass producing Napier grass accessions were successfully transformed. Southern blot analysis revealed simple transgene integration patterns with 33% of the regenerated transgenic lines having a single insert of the minimal transgene expression cassette. NPTII-ELISA confirmed transgene expression in all transgenic lines. The results of this study will enable the acceleration of Napier grass improvement by genetic transformation or genome editing. more...

They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants-neutron stars and black holes-are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokandeʼs response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. 47. Long-range transport of giant particles in Asian dust identified by physical, mineralogical, and meteorological analysis

Abstract: Giant particles transported over long distances are generally of limited concern in atmospheric studies due to their low number concentrations in mineral dust and possible local origin. However, they can play an important role in regional circulation of earth materials due to their enormous volume concentration. Asian dust laden with giant particles was observed in Korea on 31 March 2012, after a migration of about 2000 km across the Yellow Sea from the Gobi Desert. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that 20% of the particles exceeded 10 μm in equivalent sphere diameter, with a maximum of 60 μm. The median diameter from the number distribution was 5.7 μm, which was larger than the diameters recorded of 2.5 and 2.9 μm in Asian dust storms in 2010 and 2011, respectively, and was consistent with independent optical particle counter data. Giant particles (>10 μm) contributed about 89% of the volume of the dust in the 2012 storm. Illite–smectite series clay minerals were the major mineral group followed by quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, and calcite. The total phyllosilicate content was ~52%. The direct long-range transport of giant particles was confirmed by calcite nanofibers closely associated with clays in a submicron scale identified by high-resolution SEM and transmission electron microscopy. Since giant particles consisted of clay agglomerates and clay-coated quartz, feldspars, and micas, the mineral composition varied little throughout the fine (20 μm) size bins. Analysis of the synoptic conditions of the 2012 dust event and its migration indicated that the mid-tropospheric strong wind belt directly stretching to Korea induced rapid transport of the dust, delivering giant particles. Giant dust particles with high settling velocity would be the major input into the terrestrial and marine sedimentary and ecological systems of East Asia and the western Pacific. Analysis of ancient aeolian deposits in Korea suggested the common deposition of giant particles from Asian dust through the late Quaternary Period. Abstract: This study was carried out to determine the effects of tomato powder (TP) on cooked pork patties during storage at 10±1°C in the dark. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of TP extract were 26.22 mg gallic acid/100 g and 3.52 mg quercetin/100 g, respectively. The extract of TP showed a potential antioxidant activity in the DPPH radical-scavenging assay (EC50 = 16.76 μg/mL).
