Insulin autoimmune syndrome (IAS) is a rare cause of non-islet cell hypoglycaemia. Treatment of this condition is complex and typically involves long-term use of glucocorticoids. Immunotherapy may provide an alternative in the management of this autoimmune condition through the suppression of antibodies production by B-lymphocyte depletion. We present a case of a 62-year-old male, with refractory hypoglycaemia initially presenting with hypoglycaemic seizure during an admission for acute psychosis. Biochemical testing revealed hypoglycaemia with an inappropriately elevated insulin and C-peptide level and no evidence of exogenous use of insulin or sulphonylurea. Polyethylene glycol precipitation demonstrated persistently elevated free insulin levels. This was accompanied by markedly elevated anti-insulin antibody (IA) titres. Imaging included CT with contrast, MRI, pancreatic endoscopic ultrasound and Ga 68-DOTATATE position emission tomography (DOTATATE PET) scan did not reveal islet cell aetiology for hyperinsulinaemia. Maintenance of euglycaemia was dependent on oral steroids and dextrose infusion. Complete resolution of hypoglycaemia and dependence on glucose and steroids was only achieved following treatment with plasma exchange and rituximab.

Objectives Informing research participants of the results of studies in which they took part is viewed as an ethical imperative. However, there is little guidance in the literature about how to do this. The Fluoxetine Or Control Under Supervision trial randomised 3127 patients with a recent acute stroke to 6 months of fluoxetine or placebo and was published in the Lancet on 5 December 2018. The trial team decided to inform the participants of the results at exactly the same time as the Lancet publication, and also whether they had been allocated fluoxetine or placebo. In this report, we describe how we informed participants of the results.Design In the 6-month and 12-month follow-up questionnaires, we invited participants to provide an email address if they wished to be informed of the results of the trial. We re-opened our trial telephone helpline between 5 December 2018 and 31 March 2019.Setting UK stroke services.Participants 3127 participants were randomised. 2847 returned 6-month follow-up forms and 2703 returned 12-month follow-up forms; the remaining participants had died (380), withdrawn consent or did not respond.Results Of those returning follow-up questionnaires, a total of 1845 email addresses were provided and a further 50 people requested results to be sent by post. Results were sent to all email and postal addresses provided; 309 emails were returned unrecognised. Seventeen people replied, of whom three called the helpline and the rest responded by email.Conclusion It is feasible to disseminate results of large trials to research participants, though only around 60% of those randomised wanted to receive the results. The system we developed was efficient and required very little resource, and could be replicated by trialists in the future.Trial registration number ISRCTN83290762; Post-results.

Abstract Background Despite increases in musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) in Canada, evidence suggests utilization of chiropractic services has remained relatively stable over time. Understanding the extent to which chiropractors are consulted and factors associated with their utilization may suggest factors related to accessing care. We assessed the change in prevalence and characteristics of Canadians seeking chiropractic care across two time periods 2001–2010 and 2015–2018. Methods We used national cross-sectional data from seven cycles of the Canadian Community Health Survey between 2001 and 2018. The survey included Canadians aged 12 years and older living in private dwellings in all provinces and territories. National annual weighted prevalence and age-standardized weighted prevalence (and 95% confidence intervals) of chiropractic utilization were calculated. We calculated prevalence of chiropractic utilization stratified by demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle and health-related variables. Crude linear trends and change in prevalence from 2001 to 2010 were assessed using linear regression models. Results The national annual prevalence of Canadians consulting a chiropractor in the previous 12 months slightly increased from 11.0% (95% CI 10.8, 11.3) in 2001 to 11.4% (95%CI 11.1, 11.7) in 2010, and in those reporting receiving regular health care from a chiropractor from 7.5% (95%CI 7.2, 7.7) in 2015 to 7.9% (95%CI 7.7, 8.2) in 2018. Prevalence of utilization varied by province, highest in the Western provinces but lowest in Atlantic provinces. The age-specific prevalence of chiropractic utilization was highest in those aged 35–49 years and remained stable over time, except for slight increase in those aged 65–79 years. A higher percentage of Canadians identifying as white, Canadian-born, in the highest quintile of household income, overweight, physically active and in excellent health reported seeking chiropractic services. The most common reported chronic conditions measured in the survey among Canadians consulting chiropractors were chronic back problems, arthritis, fibromyalgia and headaches. Conclusion The national prevalence of utilization of chiropractic services among Canadians slightly increased over time but varied by province and respondents’ socioeconomic and health characteristics. Chronic back problems were the most common reported chronic condition. This comprehensive population-based study on chiropractic utilization in Canada can be used to inform decisions concerning health human resources and access to rehabilitation care for MSD.

Abstract Introduction The 2023 nomenclature defined criteria for steatotic liver disease (SLD), including metabolic dysfunction-associated SLD (MASLD), alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), and the overlapping MASLD/ALD (MetALD). We aimed to assess racial and ethnic disparities in the SLD prevalence among United States (US) adults based on this new nomenclature. Methods We undertook a cross-sectional study employing the 2017–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. We identified SLD according to a controlled attenuation parameter ≥288 dB/m, liver stiffness ≥7.2 kPa, or elevated aminotransferase levels. Alcohol use thresholds were established according to the updated SLD definition. We estimated prevalences using the complex design of the NHANES survey. Multivariable logistic regressions with complex design weights were employed. Results A total of 5532 individuals are included. The mean age is 45.4 years, and 50.9% are women. The adjusted estimated prevalence of MASLD is 42.4% (95% CI: 41.1–43.8%), MetALD 1.7% (95% CI: 1.3–2.0%), and ALD 0.6% (95% CI: 0.3–0.8%). Hispanics exhibit a higher prevalence of SLD, but there are no significant differences in advanced fibrosis prevalence due to SLD among racial/ethnic groups. In MASLD, men, individuals aged 40–64 and ≥65 years, Hispanics, those with health insurance, higher BMI, diabetes, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol or use of lipid-lowering agents are independently associated with a higher risk, while Blacks have the lowest risk. In MetALD, men and higher BMI are independently associated with a higher risk of MetALD in adjusted multivariable analysis. In ALD, the adjusted multivariable analysis shows that only health insurance is independently associated with a lower ALD risk. Conclusions MASLD prevalence is high in the US, especially in men, older individuals, and Hispanics. MetALD and ALD prevalence was substantial but could be underestimated.

Mangroves are known for their carbon storage capacity, yet they are under immense pressure from human activities. This study assessed anthropogenic disturbances on mangroves’ aboveground biomass (AGB) in northern Borneo, Malaysia, using airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. Three global or pantropical allometries were compared in the development of an AGB estimation model by regressing LiDAR metrics against the AGB. The best model predicted AGB from Saenger and Snedaker allometry with an R2 of 0.85 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 14.59 Mg/ha (relative RMSE: 7.24 %). The high-resolution AGB map revealed a natural AGB gradient in intact mangroves from the coast to the interior. However, only a weak correlation between the distance from shoreline and AGB in disturbed mangroves was found. The LiDAR estimated AGBs were 196.36 Mg/ha and 157.27 Mg/ha for intact mangroves and disturbed mangroves, respectively. Relatively high AGB areas were abundant in the intact mangroves but scarce in the disturbed mangroves. The LiDAR-based AGB assessment is accurate and high-resolution, supporting carbon stock conservation and sustainable management activities under climate change mitigation programs such as REDD + .

Abstract Recent advances in 3D printing have enabled the manufacture of porous electrodes which cannot be machined using traditional methods. With micron-scale precision, the pore structure of an electrode can now be designed for optimal energy efficiency, and a 3D printed electrode is not limited to a single uniform porosity. As these electrodes scale in size, however, the total number of possible pore designs can be intractable; choosing an appropriate pore distribution manually can be a complex task. To address this challenge, we adopt an inverse design approach. Using physics-based models, the electrode structure is optimized to minimize power losses in a flow reactor. The computer-generated structure is then printed and benchmarked against homogeneous porosity electrodes. We show how an optimized electrode decreases the power requirements by 16% compared to the best-case homogeneous porosity. Future work could apply this approach to flow batteries, electrolyzers, and fuel cells to accelerate their design and implementation.

Aims: The aims of this study were to: 1) report on a cohort of skeletally mature patients with native hip and knee septic arthritis over a 14-year period; 2) to determine the rate of joint failure in patients who had experienced an episode of hip or knee septic arthritis; and 3) to assess the outcome following septic arthritis relative to the infecting organism, whether those patients infected by Staphylococcus aureus would be more likely to have adverse outcomes than those infected by other organisms. Methods: All microbiological samples from joint aspirations between March 2000 and December 2014 at our institution were reviewed in order to identify cases of culture-proven septic arthritis. Cases in children (aged < 16 years) and prosthetic joints were excluded. Data were abstracted on age at diagnosis, sex, joint affected (hip or knee), type of organisms isolated, cause of septic arthritis, comorbidities within the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), details of treatment, and outcome. Results: A total of 142 patients were confirmed to have had an episode of septic arthritis in a native hip (n = 17) or knee joint (n = 125). S. aureus accounted for 57.7% of all hip and knee joint infections. There were 13 inpatient deaths attributed to septic arthritis. The median age of the patients who died was 77.5 (46.9 to 92.2) and their median age-adjusted CCI was 8 (6 to 12). A failure of the joint occurred in 26 knees (21%) and nine hips (53%). Of the knee joints infected by S. aureus (n = 71), 23 knees (32%) went into failure of joint, whereas of those infected by other organisms (n = 54), only three knees (6%) failed. Conclusion: Based on our study findings, hip and knee septic arthritis long-term outcomes were substantially worse than their immediate outcome suggested. Abstract Background Biologic strain such as oxidative stress has been associated with short leukocyte telomere length (LTL), as well as with preeclampsia and spontaneous preterm birth, yet little is known about their relationships with each other. We investigated associations of postpartum maternal LTL with preeclampsia and spontaneous preterm birth. Methods This pilot nested case control study included independent cohorts of pregnant people with singleton gestations from two academic institutions: Cohort 1 (hereafter referred to as Suburban) were enrolled prior to 20 weeks’ gestation between 2012 and 2018; and Cohort 2 (hereafter referred to as Urban) were enrolled at delivery between 2000 and 2012. Spontaneous preterm birth or preeclampsia were the selected pregnancy complications and served as cases. Cases were compared with controls from each study cohort of uncomplicated term births. Blood was collected between postpartum day 1 and up to 6 months postpartum and samples were frozen, then simultaneously thawed for analysis. Postpartum LTL was the primary outcome, measured using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and compared using linear multivariable regression models adjusting for maternal age. Secondary analyses were done stratified by mode of delivery and self-reported level of stress during pregnancy. Results 156 people were included; 66 from the Suburban Cohort and 90 from the Urban Cohort. The Suburban Cohort was predominantly White, Hispanic, higher income and the Urban Cohort was predominantly Black, Haitian, and lower income. We found a trend towards shorter LTLs among people with preeclampsia in the Urban Cohort (6517 versus 6913 bp, p = 0.07), but not in the Suburban Cohort. There were no significant differences in LTLs among people with spontaneous preterm birth compared to term controls in the Suburban Cohort (6044 versus 6144 bp, p = 0.64) or in the Urban Cohort (6717 versus 6913, p = 0.37). No differences were noted by mode of delivery. When stratifying by stress levels in the Urban Cohort, preeclampsia was associated with shorter postpartum LTLs in people with moderate stress levels (p = 0.02). Conclusion Our exploratory results compare postpartum maternal LTLs between cases with preeclampsia or spontaneous preterm birth and controls in two distinct cohorts. These pilot data contribute to emerging literature on LTLs in pregnancy.

The use of transfer learning (TL) techniques has become common practice in fields such as computer vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP). Leveraging prior knowledge gained from data with different distributions, TL offers higher performance and reduced training time, but has yet to be fully utilized in applications of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques and applications related to wireless communications, a field loosely termed radio frequency machine learning (RFML). This work examines whether existing transferability metrics, used in other modalities, might be useful in the context of RFML. Results show that the two existing metrics tested, Log Expected Empirical Prediction (LEEP) and Logarithm of Maximum Evidence (LogME), correlate well with post-transfer accuracy and can therefore be used to select source models for radio frequency (RF) domain adaptation and to predict post-transfer accuracy.

Transfer learning (TL) techniques, which leverage prior knowledge gained from data with different distributions to achieve higher performance and reduced training time, are often used in computer vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP), but have yet to be fully utilized in the field of radio frequency machine learning (RFML). This work systematically evaluates how the training domain and task, characterized by the transmitter (Tx)/receiver (Rx) hardware and channel environment, impact radio frequency (RF) TL performance for example automatic modulation classification (AMC) and specific emitter identification (SEI) use-cases. Through exhaustive experimentation using carefully curated synthetic and captured datasets with varying signal types, channel types, signal to noise ratios (SNRs), carrier/center frequencys (CFs), frequency offsets (FOs), and Tx and Rx devices, actionable and generalized conclusions are drawn regarding how best to use RF TL techniques for domain adaptation and sequential learning. Consistent with trends identified in other modalities, our results show that RF TL performance is highly dependent on the similarity between the source and target domains/tasks, but also on the relative difficulty of the source and target domains/tasks. Results also discuss the impacts of channel environment and hardware variations on RF TL performance and compare RF TL performance using head re-training and model fine-tuning methods.

Abstract Background A significant proportion of children and adolescents experience back pain. However, a comprehensive systematic review on the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions is lacking. Objectives To evaluate benefits and harms of rehabilitation interventions for non-specific low back pain (LBP) or thoracic spine pain in the pediatric population. Methods Seven bibliographic electronic databases were searched from inception to June 16, 2023. Moreover, reference lists of relevant studies and systematic reviews, three targeted websites, and the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform were searched. Paired reviewers independently conducted screening, assessed risk of bias, and extracted data related to study characteristics, methodology, subjects, and results. Certainty of evidence was evaluated based on the GRADE approach. Results We screened 8461 citations and 307 full-text articles. Ten quantitative studies (i.e., 8 RCTs, 2 non-randomized clinical trials) and one qualitative study were included. With very low to moderate certainty evidence, in adolescents with LBP, spinal manipulation (1–2 sessions/week over 12 weeks, 1 RCT) plus exercise may be associated with a greater likelihood of experiencing clinically important pain reduction versus exercise alone; and group-based exercise over 8 weeks (2 RCTs and 1 non-randomized trial) may reduce pain intensity. The qualitative study found information provided via education/advice and compliance of treatment were related to effective treatment. No economic studies or studies examining thoracic spine pain were identified. Conclusions Spinal manipulation and group-based exercise may be beneficial in reducing LBP intensity in adolescents. Education should be provided as part of a care program. The overall evidence is sparse. Methodologically rigorous studies are needed. Trial registration CRD42019135009 (PROSPERO)

Introduction Diabetes disparities exist based on socioeconomic status, race, and ethnicity. The aim of this study is to compare two cohorts with diabetes from California and Florida to better elucidate how health outcomes are stratified within underserved communities according to state location, race, and ethnicity.Research design and methods Two cohorts were recruited for comparison from 20 Federally Qualified Health Centers as part of a larger ECHO Diabetes program. Participant-level data included surveys and HbA1c collection. Center-level data included Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set metrics. Demographic characteristics were summarized overall and stratified by state (frequencies, percentages, means (95% CIs)). Generalized linear mixed models were used to compute and compare model-estimated rates and means.Results Participant-level cohort: 582 adults with diabetes were recruited (33.0% type 1 diabetes (T1D), 67.0% type 2 diabetes (T2D)). Mean age was 51.1 years (95% CI 49.5, 52.6); 80.7% publicly insured or uninsured; 43.7% non-Hispanic white (NHW), 31.6% Hispanic, 7.9% non-Hispanic black (NHB) and 16.8% other. Introduction: Individuals with participation and activity limitations face important healthcare challenges. Objectives: We investigated healthcare utilization and characteristics of Canadians living with participation and activity limitations between 2001 and 2010. Methods: We pooled data from 5 cycles of the Canadian Community Health Survey (2001-2010 CCHS). The multistage stratified cluster-sampling method used covered approximately 98% of Canadians, aged 12 years and older residing in private dwellings. We described sociodemographic, behavioral, and health-related characteristics of participants with participation and activity limitations and reported their annual utilization (prevalence; 95% CI) of 7 healthcare providers. Multivariable modified Poisson regression identified individual characteristics associated with healthcare utilization and examined the trends over time. Results: Annually, 8.1 million Canadians aged 12 years and older (29.8%) reported participation and activity limitations. Most common health conditions were back problems (37%) and arthritis (34%). Predominant healthcare providers were medical doctors (88.8%; 95% CI = 88.6-89.0), nurses (16.3%; 95% CI = 16.1-16.6), physiotherapists (15.0%; 95% CI = 14.7-15.2), and chiropractors (14.4%; 95% CI = 14.2-14.7). Overall, males, older adults, immigrants, those with lower education, lower income, recent employment, and better general health were less likely to consult providers. Over time, utilization of most non-medical providers increased. Conclusion: Participation and activity limitations are prevalent in Canada, and most consulted medical doctors. Disadvantaged groups reported lower utilization of most providers, emphasizing access challenges and the need for equitable and integrated healthcare policies. Improving access to rehabilitation services and their inclusion within universal healthcare coverage should be a priority.

Abstract Image‐based cytometry faces challenges due to technical variations arising from different experimental batches and conditions, such as differences in instrument configurations or image acquisition protocols, impeding genuine biological interpretation of cell morphology. Existing solutions, often necessitating extensive pre‐existing data knowledge or control samples across batches, have proved limited, especially with complex cell image data. To overcome this, “Cyto‐Morphology Adversarial Distillation” (CytoMAD), a self‐supervised multi‐task learning strategy that distills biologically relevant cellular morphological information from batch variations, is introduced to enable integrated analysis across multiple data batches without complex data assumptions or extensive manual annotation. Unique to CytoMAD is its “morphology distillation”, symbiotically paired with deep‐learning image‐contrast translation—offering additional interpretable insights into label‐free cell morphology. The versatile efficacy of CytoMAD is demonstrated in augmenting the power of biophysical imaging cytometry. It allows integrated label‐free classification of human lung cancer cell types and accurately recapitulates their progressive drug responses, even when trained without the drug concentration information. CytoMAD also allows joint analysis of tumor biophysical cellular heterogeneity, linked to epithelial‐mesenchymal plasticity, that standard fluorescence markers overlook. CytoMAD can substantiate the wide adoption of biophysical cytometry for cost‐effective diagnosis and screening.

Summary: Fungal pathogens such as Candida albicans pose a significant threat to human health with limited treatment options available. One strategy to expand the therapeutic target space is to identify genes important for pathogen growth in host-relevant environments. Here, we leverage a pooled functional genomic screening strategy to identify genes important for fitness of C. albicans in diverse conditions. We identify an essential gene with no known Saccharomyces cerevisiae homolog, C1_09670C, and demonstrate that it encodes subunit 3 of replication factor A (Rfa3). Furthermore, we apply computational analyses to identify functionally coherent gene clusters and predict gene function. Through this approach, we predict the cell-cycle-associated function of C3_06880W, a previously uncharacterized gene required for fitness specifically at elevated temperatures, and follow-up assays confirm that C3_06880W encodes Iml3, a component of the C. albicans kinetochore with roles in virulence in vivo. Overall, this work reveals insights into the vulnerabilities of C. albicans.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate whether endothelin‐A receptor (ETAR) inhibition in non‐Hispanic Black (NHB) and White (NHW) young adults depends on biological sex. We recruited females during low hormone (n = 22) and high hormone (n = 22) phases, and males (n = 22). Participants self‐identified as NHB (n = 33) or NHW (n = 33). Participants were instrumented with two microdialysis fibers: (1) lactated Ringer's (control) and (2) 500 nM BQ‐123 (ETAR antagonist). Local heating was used to elicit cutaneous vasodilation, and an infusion of 20 mM L‐NAME to quantify NO‐dependent vasodilation. At control sites, NO‐dependent vasodilation was lowest in NHB males (46 ± 13 %NO) and NHB females during low hormone phases (47 ± 12 %NO) compared to all NHW groups. Inhibition of ETAR increased NO‐dependent vasodilation in NHB males (66 ± 13 %NO), in both groups of females during low hormone phases (NHW, control: 64 ± 12 %NO, BQ‐123: 85 ± 11 %NO; NHB, BQ‐123: 68 ± 13 %NO), and in NHB females during high hormone phases (control: 61 ± 11 %NO, BQ‐123: 83 ± 9 %NO). There was no effect for ETAR inhibition in NHW males or females during high hormone phases. These data suggest the effect of ETAR inhibition on NO‐dependent vasodilation is influenced by biological sex and racial identity.

Background and Aims: Telehealth has emerged as an important mode of cirrhosis care delivery, but its use and satisfaction among vulnerable populations (eg, racial/ethnic minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged, substance use disorders) are unknown. We evaluated digital capacity, telehealth use, satisfaction and associated factors among patients receiving hepatology care via telehealth (telehepatology) across 2 Veterans Affairs and 1 safety-net Healthcare systems. Methods: English- and Spanish-speaking adults with cirrhosis (N = 256) completed surveys on telehealth use and satisfaction, quality of life, pandemic stress, alcohol use and depression. Logistic regression analyses assessed telehealth use and general linear models evaluated telehealth satisfaction. Results: The mean age was 64.5 years, 80.9% were male and 35.9% Latino; 44.5% had alcohol-associated cirrhosis; 20.8% had decompensated cirrhosis; 100% had digital (phone/computer) capacity; and 75.0% used telehepatology in the prior 6 months. On multivariable analysis, participants with alcohol-associated (vs not) cirrhosis were less likely and those with greater pandemic stress were more likely to use telehepatology (odds ratio = 0.46 and 1.41, respectively; P < .05). Better quality of life was associated with higher telehepatology satisfaction and older age was associated with lower satisfaction (β = 0.01 and −0.01, respectively; P < .05). Latinos had higher satisfaction, but alcohol use disorder was associated with less satisfaction with telehepatology visits (β = 0.22 and −0.02, respectively; P

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a method of measuring spatiotemporal gait patterns, tibial accelerations, and heart rate that are matched with high resolution geographical terrain features using publicly available data. These methods were demonstrated using data from 218 Marines, who completed loaded outdoor ruck hikes between 5–20 km over varying terrain. Each participant was instrumented with two inertial measurement units (IMUs) and a GPS watch. Custom code synchronized accelerometer and positional data without a priori sensor synchronization, calibrated orientation of the IMUs in the tibial reference frame, detected and separated only periods of walking or running, and computed acceleration and spatiotemporal outcomes. GPS positional data were georeferenced with geographic information system (GIS) maps to extract terrain features such as slope, altitude, and surface conditions. This paper reveals the ease at which similar data can be gathered among relatively large groups of people with minimal setup and automated data processing. The methods described here can be adapted to other populations and similar ground-based activities such as skiing or trail running.

Abstract Background The World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 12-item survey (WHODAS-12) is a questionnaire developed by the WHO to measure functioning across health conditions, cultures, and settings. WHODAS-12 consists of a subset of the 36 items of WHODAS-2.0 36-item questionnaire. Little is known about the minimal important difference (MID) of WHODAS-12 in persons with chronic low back pain (LBP), which would be useful to determine whether rehabilitation improves functioning to an extent that is meaningful for people experiencing the condition. Our objective was to estimate an anchor-based MID for WHODAS-12 questionnaire in persons with chronic LBP. Methods We analyzed data from two cohort studies (identified in our previous systematic review) conducted in Europe that measured functioning using the WHODAS-36 in adults with chronic LBP. Eligible participants were adults with chronic LBP with scores on another measure as an anchor to indicate participants with small but important changes in functioning over time [Short-form-36 Physical Functioning (SF36-PF) or Oswestry Disability Index (ODI)] at baseline and follow-up (study 1: 3-months post-treatment; study 2: 1-month post-discharge from hospital). WHODAS-12 scores were constructed as sums of the 12 items (scored 0–4), with possible scores ranging from 0 to 48. We calculated the mean WHODAS-12 score in participants who achieved a small but meaningful improvement on SF36-PF or ODI at follow-up. A meaningful improvement was an MID of 4–16 on ODI or 5–16 on SF36-PF. Results Of 70 eligible participants in study 1 (mean age = 54.1 years, SD = 14.7; 69% female), 18 achieved a small meaningful improvement based on SF-36 PF. Corresponding mean WHODAS-12 change score was − 3.22/48 (95% CI -4.79 to -1.64). Of 89 eligible participants in study 2 (mean age = 65.5 years, SD = 11.5; 61% female), 50 achieved a small meaningful improvement based on ODI. Corresponding mean WHODAS-12 change score was − 5.99/48 (95% CI − 7.20 to -4.79). Conclusions Using an anchor-based approach, the MID of WHODAS-12 is estimated at -3.22 (95% CI -4.79 to -1.64) or -5.99 (95% CI − 7.20 to -4.79) in adults with chronic LBP. These MID values inform the utility of WHODAS-12 in measuring functioning to determine whether rehabilitation or other health services achieve a minimal difference that is meaningful to patients with chronic LBP.

There is a need to develop user-friendly imaging tools estimating robust quantitative biomarkers (QIBs) from multiparametric (mp)MRI for clinical applications in oncology. Quantitative metrics derived from (mp)MRI can monitor and predict early responses to treatment, often prior to anatomical changes. We have developed a vendor-agnostic, flexible, and user-friendly MATLAB-based toolkit, MRI-Quantitative Analysis and Multiparametric Evaluation Routines (“MRI-QAMPER”, current release v3.0), for the estimation of quantitative metrics from dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) and multi-b value diffusion-weighted (DW) MR and MR relaxometry. MRI-QAMPER’s functionality includes generating numerical parametric maps from these methods reflecting tumor permeability, cellularity, and tissue morphology. MRI-QAMPER routines were validated using digital reference objects (DROs) for DCE and DW MRI, serving as initial approval stages in the National Cancer Institute Quantitative Imaging Network (NCI/QIN) software benchmark. MRI-QAMPER has participated in DCE and DW MRI Collaborative Challenge Projects (CCPs), which are key technical stages in the NCI/QIN benchmark. In a DCE CCP, QAMPER presented the best repeatability coefficient (RC = 0.56) across test–retest brain metastasis data, out of ten participating DCE software packages. In a DW CCP, QAMPER ranked among the top five (out of fourteen) tools with the highest area under the curve (AUC) for prostate cancer detection. This platform can seamlessly process mpMRI data from brain, head and neck, thyroid, prostate, pancreas, and bladder cancer. MRI-QAMPER prospectively analyzes dose de-escalation trial data for oropharyngeal cancer, which has earned it advanced NCI/QIN approval for expanded usage and applications in wider clinical trials.

Abstract Background The greatest change in the treatment of people living with type 1 diabetes in the last decade has been the explosion of technology assisting in all aspects of diabetes therapy, from glucose monitoring to insulin delivery and decision making. As such, the aim of our systematic review was to assess the utility of these technologies as well as identify any precision medicine-directed findings to personalize care. Methods Screening of 835 peer-reviewed articles was followed by systematic review of 70 of them (focusing on randomized trials and extension studies with ≥50 participants from the past 10 years). Results We find that novel technologies, ranging from continuous glucose monitoring systems, insulin pumps and decision support tools to the most advanced hybrid closed loop systems, improve important measures like HbA1c, time in range, and glycemic variability, while reducing hypoglycemia risk. Several studies included person-reported outcomes, allowing assessment of the burden or benefit of the technology in the lives of those with type 1 diabetes, demonstrating positive results or, at a minimum, no increase in self-care burden compared with standard care. Important limitations of the trials to date are their small size, the scarcity of pre-planned or powered analyses in sub-populations such as children, racial/ethnic minorities, people with advanced complications, and variations in baseline glycemic levels. In addition, confounders including education with device initiation, concomitant behavioral modifications, and frequent contact with the healthcare team are rarely described in enough detail to assess their impact. Conclusions Our review highlights the potential of technology in the treatment of people living with type 1 diabetes and provides suggestions for optimization of outcomes and areas of further study for precision medicine-directed technology use in type 1 diabetes.

Abstract Transition metal carbides, including both MXene and non‐MXene metal carbides, have enjoyed a soaring reputation in recent years. Benefitting from their intriguing physical and chemical characteristics, they shine in multifarious research fields and currently, they have emerged as promising nanomaterials for photocatalysis in energy and environmental science. Herein, based on the recent theoretical research and experimental studies, a systematic and comprehensive review of the expeditious advances of metal carbides and their nano‐architectures in the flourishing arena of photocatalysis is presented. The fundamental mechanism involved in photocatalysis with metal carbides serving as semiconductors or cocatalysts is thoroughly discussed. Besides, we highlight the main synthetic strategies of MXene and non‐MXene metal carbides and unravel the structural properties of the as‐obtained metal carbides via different fabrication routes to establish and elucidate their intriguing role in ameliorating photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the state‐of‐the‐art advancements of metal carbides in diverse photocatalytic applications, including hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, overall water splitting, and carbon dioxide reduction reaction, are summarized. In particular, insights into the structure–activity relationship of metal carbide in photocatalysis are elucidated. Finally, this review concludes with the ongoing challenges and perspectives on the future directions of metal carbides in the realm of photocatalysis.

Background:. Gender-affirming breast augmentation comprises an increasing portion of breast augmentations performed by plastic surgeons. Satisfaction and breast implant illness (BII) symptoms in this population have not been well studied. This study aimed to evaluate satisfaction and BII symptoms in transwomen who received nontextured implants as part of their breast reconstruction. Methods:. We conducted a retrospective review of transwomen who underwent breast augmentation for gender-affirming surgery. We performed telephone survey evaluation using the BREAST-Q questionnaire preoperatively, 6 months and 1 year after breast implant placement. Survey evaluation asking about BII symptoms was also administered at the same time points. Results:. Twenty-six patients completed the BREAST-Q survey, which demonstrated significantly improved satisfaction postoperatively at 6 and 12 months when compared with median preoperative scores for psychosocial (P < 0.001; P < 0.001), sexual (P < 0.001; P < 0.001), and overall satisfaction with breasts (P < 0.001; P < 0.001). Physical well-being of the chest decreased at 6 months (P < 0.001) but improved in comparison with 12 months (P < 0.001). Thirty-four patients completed the BII survey, with 18% reporting symptoms at 3 months and 29% at 1 year. Zero patients requested explantation. Conclusions:. Transwomen exhibit a significant increase in breast, psychosocial, and sexual well-being after breast augmentation. However, patients experienced a decreased physical well-being, and many report symptoms associated with BII. These results can be used to better counsel these individuals preoperatively and set reasonable postoperative expectations. Further studies investigating long-term satisfaction in larger cohorts are needed.

Summary:. A 13-year-old girl with a painful left neck mass was referred to our institution due to suspicions of malignancy. The patient reported pain that accompanied her frequent neck spasms. Computed tomography revealed a large, soft-tissue mass in the left neck, deep to the sternocleidomastoid. The lesion anteriorly displaced the internal carotid artery and both displaced and crushed the internal left jugular vein. Uniquely, a three-dimensional virtual reality model combining magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography data was used to determine the lesion’s resectability and visualize which structures would be encountered or require protection while ensuring total resection. During operation, we confirmed that the mass also laterally displaced the brachial plexus, cranial nerves X and XI, and spinal nerves C3–C5 (including the phrenic) of the cervical plexus. Postsurgical pathological analysis confirmed a diagnosis of desmoid tumor, also known as aggressive fibromatosis, whereas DNA sequencing revealed a CTNNB1 mutation, a somatic genetic marker found in approximately 90% of desmoid tumor cases. When possible, the most widely used method for the treatment of desmoid tumors has been gross resection. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and local excision are also used in the treatment of fibromatoses when complete resection is judged infeasible. In this case, a complete surgical resection with tumor-free surgical margins was performed. A standard cervical approach with a modified posterolateral incision site was implemented to avoid a conspicuous anterior neck scar. No flap, nerve repair, or reconstruction was warranted. At 1 year of postsurgical follow-up, the patient showed minimal scarring and no signs of recurrence.

Abstract Background Chiropractors use a variety of therapeutic interventions in clinical practice. How the selection of interventions differs across musculoskeletal regions or with different patient and provider characteristics is currently unclear. This study aimed to describe how frequently different interventions are used for patients presenting for chiropractic care, and patient and provider characteristics associated with intervention selection. Methods Data were obtained from the Chiropractic Observation and Analysis STudy (COAST) and Ontario (O-COAST) studies: practice-based, cross-sectional studies in Victoria, Australia (2010–2012) and Ontario, Canada (2014–2015). Chiropractors recorded data on patient diagnosis and intervention selection from up to 100 consecutive patient visits. The frequency of interventions selected overall and for each diagnostic category (e.g., different musculoskeletal regions) were descriptively analysed. Univariable multi-level logistic regression (provider and patient as grouping factors), stratified by diagnostic category, was used to assess the association between patient/provider variables and intervention selection. Results Ninety-four chiropractors, representative of chiropractors in Victoria and Ontario for age, sex, and years in practice, participated. Data were collected on 7,966 patient visits (6419 unique patients), including 10,731 individual diagnoses (mean age: 43.7 (SD: 20.7), 57.8% female). Differences in patient characteristics and intervention selection were observed between chiropractors practicing in Australia and Canada. Overall, manipulation was the most common intervention, selected in 63% (95%CI:62–63) of encounters. However, for musculoskeletal conditions presenting in the extremities only, soft tissue therapies were more commonly used (65%, 95%CI:62–68). Manipulation was less likely to be performed if the patient was female (OR:0.74, 95%CI:0.65–0.84), older (OR:0.79, 95%CI:0.77–0.82), presenting for an initial visit (OR:0.73, 95%CI:0.56–0.95) or new complaint (OR:0.82, 95%CI:0.71–0.95), had one or more comorbidities (OR:0.63, 95%CI:0.54–0.72), or was underweight (OR:0.47, 95%CI:0.35–0.63), or obese (OR:0.69, 95%CI:0.58–0.81). Chiropractors with more than five years clinical experience were less likely to provide advice/education (OR:0.37, 95%CI:0.16–0.87) and exercises (OR:0.17, 95%CI:0.06–0.44). Conclusion In more than 10,000 diagnostic encounters, manipulation was the most common therapeutic intervention for spine-related problems, whereas soft tissue therapies were more common for extremity problems. Different patient and provider characteristics were associated with intervention selection. These data may be used to support further research on appropriate selection of interventions for common musculoskeletal complaints.

Abstract The vaginal ecosystem is closely tied to human health and reproductive outcomes, yet its dynamics in the wake of childbirth remain poorly characterized. Here, we profile the vaginal microbiota and cytokine milieu of participants sampled longitudinally throughout pregnancy and for at least one year postpartum. We show that delivery, regardless of mode, is associated with a vaginal pro-inflammatory cytokine response and the loss of Lactobacillus dominance. By contrast, neither the progression of gestation nor the approach of labor strongly altered the vaginal ecosystem. At 9.5-months postpartum—the latest timepoint at which cytokines were assessed—elevated inflammation coincided with vaginal bacterial communities that had remained perturbed (highly diverse) from the time of delivery. Time-to-event analysis indicated a one-year postpartum probability of transitioning to Lactobacillus dominance of 49.4%. As diversity and inflammation declined during the postpartum period, dominance by L. crispatus, the quintessential health-associated commensal, failed to return: its prevalence before, immediately after, and one year after delivery was 41%, 4%, and 9%, respectively. Revisiting our pre-delivery data, we found that a prior live birth was associated with a lower odds of L. crispatus dominance in pregnant participants—an outcome modestly tempered by a longer ( > 18-month) interpregnancy interval. Our results suggest that reproductive history and childbirth in particular remodel the vaginal ecosystem and that the timing and degree of recovery from delivery may help determine the subsequent health of the woman and of future pregnancies.

Summary: Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy targeting cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4, programmed death 1, and programmed death ligand 1 has shown durable remission and clinical success across different cancer types. However, patient outcomes vary among disease indications. Studies have identified prognostic biomarkers associated with immunotherapy response and patient outcomes derived from diverse data types, including next-generation bulk and single-cell DNA, RNA, T cell and B cell receptor sequencing data, liquid biopsies, and clinical imaging. Owing to inter- and intra-tumor heterogeneity and the immune system’s complexity, these biomarkers have diverse efficacy in clinical trials of ICB. Here, we review the genetic and genomic signatures and image features of ICB studies for pan-cancer applications and specific indications. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of computational approaches for predicting immunotherapy effectiveness and patient outcomes. We also elucidate the challenges of immunotherapy prognostication and the discovery of novel immunotherapy targets.

Introduction: The effectiveness of post-surgical rehabilitation following lumbar disc herniation (LDH) surgery is unclear. Research question: To investigate the effectiveness and safety of rehabilitation interventions initiated within three months post-surgery for adults treated surgically for LDH. Material and methods: This systematic review searched seven databases from inception to November 2023. Independent reviewers screened studies, assessed and extracted data, and rated the certainty of the evidence using the GRADE approach. Results: This systematic review retrieved 20,531 citations and included 25 randomized controlled trials. The high certainty evidence suggests that adding Pilates exercise to routine care and cognitive behavioral therapy may improve function immediately post-intervention (1 RCT), and that adding whole-body magnetic therapy to exercise, pharmacological and aquatic therapy may reduce low back pain intensity (1 RCT) immediately post-intervention. Compared to placebo, pregabalin did not reduce low back pain or leg pain intensity (1 RCT) (moderate to high certainty evidence). We found no differences between: 1) behavioral graded activity vs. physiotherapy (1 RCT); 2) exercise and education vs. neck massage or watchful waiting (1 RCT); 3) exercise, education, and in-hospital usual care vs. in-hospital usual care (1 RCT); 4) functional or staged exercise vs. usual post-surgical care including exercise (2 RCTs); and 5) supervised exercise with education vs. education (1 RCT). No studies assessed adverse events. Discussion and conclusion: Evidence on effective and safe post-surgical rehabilitation interventions is sparse. This review identified two interventions with potential short-term benefits (Pilates exercises, whole-body magnetic therapy) but safety is unclear, and one with an iatrogenic effect (pregabalin).

Introduction: Understanding healthcare utilization by Canadians with back problems informs healthcare planning nationally. Research question: What is the prevalence of utilization of healthcare providers (medical doctors, chiropractors, physiotherapists, nurses), and associated characteristics among Canadians with chronic back problems (2001–2016)? Material and methods: This population-based study used Canadian Community Health Survey data (2001–2016) restricted to respondents with chronic back problems (aged ≥12 years). We used self-reported consultation with healthcare providers (medical doctors, chiropractors, physiotherapists, nurses) from 2001–2010, and self-reported regular healthcare provider from 2015–2016. We calculated the 12-month prevalence of utilization with providers, and used modified Poisson regression to assess sociodemographic, health-related and behavioural factors associated with utilization of different providers. Results: From 2001 to 2010 and 2015/2016, respectively, prevalence of utilization of medical doctors was 87.9% (95% CI 87.6–88.2) and 86.7% (95% CI 85.9–87.5); chiropractors 24.0% (95% CI 23.6–24.4) and 14.5% (95% CI 13.8–15.3); physiotherapists 17.2% (95% CI 16.9–17.6) and 10.7% (95% CI 10.0–11.4); nurses 14.0% (95% CI 13.7–14.2) and 6.6% (95% CI 6.1–7.0). Females were more likely to see any provider than males. Persons of lower socioeconomic status were less likely to consult chiropractors or physiotherapists (2001–2016), or nurses (2001–2010). Immigrants were less likely to consult chiropractors or nurses. Persons aged >65 years were less likely to consult chiropractors or physiotherapists, and those with fair/poor general health were less likely to consult chiropractors, but more likely to consult other providers. Discussion and conclusion: Medical doctors were most commonly consulted by Canadians with back problems, then chiropractors and physiotherapists. Characteristics of healthcare utilization varied by provider. Findings inform the need to strengthen healthcare delivery for Canadians with back problems.

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess cutaneous sensory nerve function, independent of nitric oxide, in non‐Hispanic Black and White young adults. We tested the hypothesis that cutaneous reactive hyperaemia and sensory nerve‐mediated vasodilatation would be lower in non‐Hispanic Black young adults relative to non‐Hispanic White young adults. Twenty‐four participants who self‐identified as non‐Hispanic Black (n = 12) or non‐Hispanic White (n = 12) were recruited. All participants underwent three bouts of reactive hyperaemia. An index of skin blood flow was measured continuously using laser‐Doppler flowmetry at a control site and at a site treated with topical 4% lignocaine to inhibit sensory nerve function. Abstract The purpose of this case report was to evaluate in vivo endothelial function and nitric oxide (NO)‐dependent vasodilatation before and after the cessation of long‐term (11–12 years) fourth‐generation oral contraceptive pill (OCP) use in one young, healthy and premenopausal woman. This retrospective analysis includes data from six experimental visits: three visits during months 133–144 of fourth‐generation OCP use and three visits 19–22 months after OCP cessation. Endothelium‐dependent and NO‐dependent vasodilatation were assessed in the cutaneous microvasculature using laser‐Doppler flowmetry, a rapid local heating protocol (39°C, 0.1°C/s) and pharmacological perfusion through intradermal microdialysis fibres. The participant had consistent medical history and lifestyle behaviours throughout both hormonal exposures. Data are presented as the mean (SD). Endothelium‐dependent vasodilatation was 42 (10)% of site‐specific maximal cutaneous vascular conductance (CVCmax) during OCP use and 63 (10)%CVCmax after OCP cessation (49% increase). Nitric oxide‐dependent vasodilatation was 70 (5)% contribution of NO during OCP use and 60 (15)%NO after OCP cessation (15% reduction). Baseline blood flow was greater after OCP cessation, but maximal blood flow was reduced. Data from this case report support a substantial increase in cutaneous microvascular endothelial function assessed via local heating after cessation of long‐term use of a fourth‐generation OCP, which does not appear to be attributable to increased NO bioavailability. Overall, these data suggest an improvement in endothelial and microvascular function after the cessation of long‐term use of a fourth‐generation OCP.

Transfer learning (TL) techniques have proven useful in a wide variety of applications traditionally dominated by machine learning (ML), such as natural language processing, computer vision, and computer-aided design. Recent extrapolations of TL to the radio frequency (RF) domain are being used to increase the potential applicability of RFML algorithms, seeking to improve the portability of models for spectrum situational awareness and transmission source identification. Unlike most of the computer vision and natural language processing applications of TL, applications within the RF modality must contend with inherent hardware distortions and channel condition variations. This paper seeks to evaluate the feasibility and performance trade-offs when transferring learned behaviors from functional RFML classification algorithms, specifically those designed for automatic modulation classification (AMC) and specific emitter identification (SEI), between homogeneous radios of similar construction and quality and heterogeneous radios of different construction and quality. Results derived from both synthetic data and over-the-air experimental collection show promising performance benefits from the application of TL to the RFML algorithms of SEI and AMC.

Abstract Objective The purpose of this study is to assess the anatomical appropriateness of a three‐dimensional (3D) printed pediatric middle ear model with a replaceable middle ear unit as an endoscopic ear surgery (EES) simulator. Methods Single‐blinded, prospective, proof‐of‐concept study conducted in a simulation operative suite. A simulator was developed through segmentation of source images and multi‐material 3D printing. Subjects were asked to point to seven anatomical sites before and after a short anatomy presentation of a human middle ear photograph. They also filled out a survey about the feasibility of the model. Outcome variables included survey scores, pre‐anatomy lesson (PreAL) and post‐anatomy lesson (PostAL) quiz scores. Results There were 24 participants (19 residents, 1 fellow, and 4 attendings), none with self‐reported proficiency in EES. The PreAL mean score was 4.42 and PostAL quiz mean score was 5.32 (average improvement of 43% [CI = 17%–70%]; p = .003). The higher the level of training, the higher the PreAL scores (0.55 points per year of training; p = .004). The subspecialty (otology, other, in‐training) was also associated with the PreAL scores (p = .004). Total survey score means were 22.8 (out of 30). Conclusion The results of our study suggest that our model has adequate anatomical high fidelity to mimic a real, pediatric temporal bone for EES. As 3D printing technologies continue to advance, the quality of ear models has the potential to provide improved surgical training for pediatric EES. Level of Evidence 4

Abstract Future exploration efforts of the Moon, Mars, and other bodies are poised to focus heavily on persistent and sustainable survey and research efforts, especially given the recent interest in a long‐term sustainable human presence at the Moon. Key to these efforts understands a number of important processes on the lunar surface for both scientific and operational purposes. We discuss the potential value of in situ artificial substrate witness plates, powerful tools that can supplement familiar remote sensing and sample acquisition techniques and provide a sustainable way of monitoring processes in key locations on planetary surfaces while maintaining a low environmental footprint. These tools, which we call Biscuits, can use customized materials as wide ranging as zircon‐based spray coatings to metals potentially useable for surface structures, to target specific processes/questions as part of a small, passive witness plate that can be flexibly placed with respect to location and total time duration. We examine and discuss unique case studies to show how processes such as water presence/transport, presence and contamination of biologically relevant molecules, solar activity related effects, and other processes can be measured using Biscuits. Biscuits can yield key location sensitive, time integrated measurements on these processes to inform scientific understanding of the Moon and enable operational goals in lunar exploration. While we specifically demonstrate this on a simulated traverse and for selected examples, we stress all groups interested in planetary surfaces should consider these adaptable, low footprint, and highly informative tools for future exploration.

ABSTRACTBackground Axial facet joint interventions (e.g., medial branch block and radiofrequency ablation, facet joint intra-articular injection) are commonly performed for managing chronic spinal pain. Although traditionally performed with fluoroscopy or computed tomography (CT) guidance, ultrasound-guided techniques have also been developed for these interventions.Aims The aim of this study is to present contemporary ultrasound-guided techniques for facet joint interventions and synthesize data addressing their accuracy, safety, and efficacy.Methods The PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases were systematically searched for studies of ultrasound-guided facet joint interventions with human subjects from November 1, 1992, to November 1, 2022. Additional sources were drawn from reference lists and citations of relevant studies.Results We found 48 studies assessing ultrasound-guided facet joint interventions. Ultrasound guidance for injection of the cervical facet joints and their innervating nerves had favorable accuracy (78%–100%), with lower procedural time compared to fluoroscopy or CT guidance and comparable pain relief. Accuracy with ultrasound-guided lumbar facet joint intra-articular injection (86%–100%) was more reliable than medial branch block (72%–97%); analgesia was comparable to fluoroscopy and CT guidance. In general, these procedures were more challenging for patients with obesity, and deeper structures were more difficult to accurately target (e.g., lower cervical levels, L5 dorsal ramus).Conclusions Ultrasound-guided facet joint interventions continue to evolve. Some technically challenging interventions may be impractical for widespread usage or require further technical refinement. The utility of ultrasound guidance with obesity and abnormal anatomy may be reduced.

Purpose: Proton therapy is an emerging therapy for several malignancies owing to its favorable therapeutic ratio. There are very limited data on the use of proton therapy in the management of thyroid carcinoma. Our objective was to review the safety, feasibility, and outcomes of proton therapy for patients with thyroid cancer treated to the head and neck. Methods: From our institution's proton database from 2012 to 2021, we identified 22 patients with thyroid cancer treated with proton beam therapy. We evaluated outcomes and toxicities. Results: Median follow-up was 26 months. Of the 22 patients, 50% were female. The mean age was 65 years. Three patients had anaplastic cancer; 13, papillary carcinoma; 2, follicular carcinoma; and 2, poorly differentiated carcinoma. Forty-six percent had T4 disease. Primary targets were the central neck compartment, level VI, and upper mediastinum. Radiation dose was 60 GyRBE adjuvantly, and 70 GyRBE for gross disease (range, 6000-7600 GyRBE). Eight patients underwent upfront adjuvant radiation, and 3 received definitive radiation for unresectable disease upfront. Eleven patients received either salvage or palliative radiation. Fifty-nine percent of patients had extrathyroidal extension, and 64% of patients had gross disease in the neck before treatment. Fifty percent of patients had metastatic disease before treatment. Sixteen patients received concurrent chemotherapy, 63% of these patients received doxorubicin. For all patients, 1-year local regional recurrence (LRR) was 0%, and overall survival (OS) was 90%. Acute grade 3+ toxicities occurred in 27% of patients, the most frequent being dermatitis (27%). Three patients required a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube after radiation therapy (RT), 2 owing to progression. There were no grade 4+ toxicities. Conclusions: Proton therapy for thyroid cancer appears feasible and effective with minimal toxicities. Prospective studies comparing proton therapy with intensity-modulated RT, to evaluate the clinical efficacy of using proton therapy to reduce toxicities in patients undergoing radiation for thyroid cancer, are warranted.
