Background Rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) is a significant cause of valvular heart disease. Pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) reflects the hemodynamic consequences of MS and is used to determine treatment strategies. However, PASP progression and expected outcomes in patients with moderately severe MS remain unclear. Purpose We aimed to examine the impact of progression rate of PASP in moderately severe MS. Methods A cohort of 866 consecutive patients with moderately severe rheumatic MS (1.0 cm2. Results Data-driven phenotyping identified two distinct trajectories based on PASP progression: a rapid progression group (N=38, 8.7%) and a slow progression group (N=398, 91.3%). Patients in the rapid progression group were older and had more comorbidities than patients in the slow progression group, including diabetes, and atrial fibrillation (all P40 mmHg was independently associated with the probability of rapid progression group allocation (odds ratio: 4.95, 95% CI: 2.08–11.99, P Conclusions Two groups with distinct patterns of PASP progression were identified. Rapid PASP progression was associated with a significantly higher risk of the composite outcomes. Background It has been known that liver stiffness (LS) assessed by transient elastography is associated with right heart dysfunction and the severity of the tricuspid regurgitation. However, the predictive value of LS for adverse outcome in patients with tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is uncertain. Objectives The aim of this study was to identify the prognostic value of LS in patients with moderate or greater degree of TR. Methods A total of 257 patients with moderate or severe TR who underwent both echocardiography and liver transient elastography were retrospectively analysed. Patients who have congenital heart disease or chronic liver disease including, viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma were excluded. Severe LS was defined as elevated kilopascal (kPa) ≥11 (High kPa). Primary outcome was defined as the composite of all-cause death and unplanned admission for heart failure. Results One hundred forty-one patients had moderate TR and 116 patients had severe TR. One hundred twenty-eight (50%) patients had severe liver stiffness. During a follow-up period (median 637 days, IQR 1317), 116 (45.1%) primary outcomes occurred. In Kaplan-Meier analysis, patients who had severe TR with high kPa showed the worst outcome. Moreover, patients who had high kPa were associated with worse clinical outcome both moderate TR group and severe TR group than patients with low kPa. In multivariate Cox regression analysis, severe liver stiffness was independently associated with primary outcomes (HR=1.66, 95% CI: 1.28–2.16), p Conclusions LS is independently associated with adverse clinical outcomes in both patients with moderate and severe TR. The degree of liver fibrosis measured by transient elastography may be a useful marker of cardiac hepatopathy related to TR, and this may contribute to predict the prognosis of TR. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants-neutron stars and black holes-are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokandeʼs response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations toward a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature.

Super-Kamiokande has been searching for neutrino bursts characteristic of core-collapse supernovae continuously, in real time, since the start of operations in 1996. The present work focuses on detecting more distant supernovae whose event rate may be too small to trigger in real time, but may be identified using an offline approach. The analysis of data collected from 2008 to 2018 found no evidence of distant supernovae bursts. This establishes an upper limit of 0.29 yr−1 on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to 100 kpc at 90% C.L. For supernovae that fail to explode and collapse directly to black holes the limit reaches to 300 kpc.

AMoRE is an international project to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo using a detection technology consisting of magnetic microcalorimeters (MMCs) and molybdenum-based scintillating crystals. Data collection has begun for the current AMORE-I phase of the project, an upgrade from the previous pilot phase. AMoRE-I employs thirteen $^\mathrm{48depl.}$Ca$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals and five Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals for a total crystal mass of 6.2 kg. Each detector module contains a scintillating crystal with two MMC channels for heat and light detection. Background Heart valve regurgitation is common in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, there are no data on the fate of mitral regurgitation (MR) and aortic regurgitation (AR) after kidney transplantation (KT). In this study, we sought to investigate regression or progression rates of MR and AR after KT in patients with ESRD. Moreover, we aimed to explore clinical and echocardiographic factors associated with the progression of MR and AR in patients undergoing KT. Methods Among 1,734 patients who underwent KT from 2005 to 2018 at a single tertiary hospital, 674 patients (407 men; mean 48±12 years) who underwent both pre- and post-KT echocardiography were analyzed comprehensively. Pre-KT echocardiography was performed within three months of KT, and post-KT echocardiography was done between 6 months and 24 months after KT. Severities of MR and AR were graded as no/trivial, mild, moderate, and severe according to the current guidelines. Regression was defined if the severity decreased by one or more grades, while progression was defined if the severity increased by one or more grades. Results Figure 1 shows the regression or progression of MR and AR after KT. 78 (11%) patients showed MR regression, but 41 (6%) experienced MR progression. 13 (2%) revealed AR regression, while 23 (4%) presented AR progression. In patients with MR progression, there were more cases of receiving a second KT, having mitral annular calcification, and showing lesser reduction of left atrial volume after KT. Patients with AR progression showed a longer hemodialysis duration, persistent hypertension after KT, and aortic root dilatation. Factors related to the progression of MR and AR showed statistically meaningful predictive values in a stepwise manner (Figure 2) Conclusions In patients undergoing KT, MR and AR may progress in patients with certain distinct characteristics. Different clinical and echocardiographic characteristics before KT, and reduction of hemodynamic loads after KT determine the progression of MR and AR. Further echocardiographic surveillances after KT are needed in patients with clinical and echocardiographic factors for progression of valve regurgitation. Background There is increasing Interest in bio-prosthetic MVD as recent advances in transcatheter MV interventions, but there is limited data. Objectives The aim of this study was to identify the factors determining mitral valve (MV) dysfunction (MVD) in patients who underwent MV replacement with bio-prosthetic valves. Also, we sought to investigate clinical outcomes in patients with bio-prosthetic MVD. Methods A total of 233 patients underwent surgical bio-prosthetic MV replacement between June 1996 and May 2015. Finally, 226 patients (mean age 66.9±11.5 years, 74.3% of women) were analyzed, excluding patients who followed-up for less than 5 years and patients whose baseline or follow-up echocardiography could not be analyzed. Clinical, echocardiographic, and laboratory data were collected early after the surgery and during follow-up. MVD was defined as an increase in mean gradient ≥5 mmHg with leaflet motion limitation and/or newly developed MV regurgitation during follow-up. Clinical outcome was defined as a composite of cardiovascular death, redo MV surgery or intervention, and hospitalization for heart failure. Results During a median of 102.0 months (interquartile range 72.0 to 132.0 months), 65 patients (28.8%) revealed MVD. 8 (12.3%) patients revealed predominant MV obstruction, and 57 (87.7%) showed predominant MV regurgitation. Factors associated with bio-prosthetic MVD by multivariate regression analysis were young age at operation (hazard ratio 0.97, 95% CI 0.95–0.99, p=0.001), end-stage renal disease (hazard ratio 4.29, 95% CI 1.45–12.71, p=0.007), elevated mean diastolic pressure gradient>5.5 mmHg across the bio-prosthetic MV early after operation (hazard ratio 1.86, 95% CI 0.97–3.74, p=0.063) and anemia after operation (hazard ratio 0.84, 95% CI 0.74–0.95, p=0.007). However, the presence of hypertension, dyslipidemia, or porcine bio-prosthesis was not related to the bio-prosthetic MVD. Kaplan-Meier curves revealed significant differences in event-free survivals for the occurrence of bio-prosthetic MVD according to each factor (Figure 1). Patients with bio-prosthetic MVD showed significantly poor clinical outcomes compared with those without bio-prosthetic MVD (event-free survival 43.1% vs. 91.9%, log-rank p Conclusions Young age at operation, end-stage renal disease, elevated mean pressure gradient early after the operation, and anemia after operation were associated with bio-prosthetic MVD in patients who underwent bio-prosthetic MV replacement. Here we report on the preparation of transparent and flexible polymerized graphite oxide, which is composed of carbons with sp3-hybridized orbitals and a non-planar ring structure, and which demonstrates dispersion in its dielectric constant at room temperature. This frequency dependence renders the material suitable for creating miniaturized, flexible, and transparent variable capacitors, allowing for smaller and simpler integrated electronic devices. We discuss this polarizability in terms of space charge effects.

Hyper-Kamiokande is the next generation underground water Cherenkov detector that builds on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. The detector which has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will be located along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beam with 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with the very large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected to acquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of 20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse science program including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientific scope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors for example in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes. Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment is expected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration is presently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the United States, whose community has a long history of making significant contributions to the neutrino physics program in Japan. Background A few studies have demonstrated bi-ventricular hypertrophy in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). However, clinical significance of HCM with right ventricular (RV) involvement has not been fully established. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the structural characteristics and clinical significance of RV hypertrophy in patients with HCM. Methods In a single center, large HCM registry, 256 patients with HCM who underwent both cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and transthoracic echocardiography within 6 months were retrospectively analyzed. RV involvement was defined as increased RV wall thickness >7 mm on CMR in any segments of RV free wall and apex. Patients who had evidence of significant RV pressure overload (RV systolic pressure >50mmHg) or had undergone septal myectomy were excluded. Cardiovascular outcomes were defined as the composite of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for cardiovascular disease. Results Among 256 patients, 41 (16%) showed RV involvement. During follow-up period (median 1099 days), 32 cardiovascular outcomes (3 cardiovascular death and 29 cardiovascular hospitalization) were occurred. Patients with RV involvement showed a significantly higher left ventricular (LV) thickness (23.8±5.8 vs. 21.2±5.0 mm, p=0.004), more advanced diastolic dysfunction, and larger left atrial volume index (LAVI, 48.5±20.3 vs. 40.2±14.9 mm/m2, p=0.016) compared to those without RV involvement. Patients with RV involvement showed more advanced LV structure and dysfunction, suggesting an indicator of severe HCM. RV involvement in HCM has clinical significance related to cardiovascular outcomes.

We report a fuel-dependent reactor electron antineutrino ($\overline{\nu}_e$) yield using six 2.8 GW$_{\text{th}}$ reactors in the Hanbit nuclear power plant complex, Yonggwang, Korea. The analysis uses $850\,666$ $\overline{\nu}_e$ candidate events with a background fraction of 2.0 % acquired through inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions in the near detector for 1807.9 live days from August 2011 to February 2018. Based on multiple fuel cycles, we observe a fuel $^{235}$U dependent variation of measured IBD yields with a slope of $(1.51 \pm 0.23) \times 10^{-43} $cm$^2$/fission and measure a total average IBD yield of $(5.84 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-43} $cm$^2$/fission. The hypothesis of no fuel-dependent IBD yield is ruled out at 6.6 $\sigma$. The observed IBD yield variation over $^{235}$U isotope fraction does not show significant deviation from the Huber-Mueller (HM) prediction at 1.3 $\sigma$. The measured fuel-dependent variation determines IBD yields of $(6.15 \pm 0.19) \times 10^{-43} $cm$^2$/fission and $(4.18\pm 0.26) \times 10^{-43} $cm$^2$/fission for two dominant fuel isotopes $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu, respectively. The measured IBD yield per $^{235}$U fission shows the largest deficit relative to the HM prediction. Reevaluation of the $^{235}$U IBD yield per fission may mostly solve the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly (RAA) while $^{239}$Pu is not completely ruled out as a possible contributor of the anomaly. The RENO experiment reports more precisely measured values of $\theta_{13}$ and $|\Delta m_{ee}^2|$ using $\sim$2\,200 live days of data. The amplitude and frequency of reactor electron antineutrino ($\overline{\nu}_e$) oscillation are measured by comparing the prompt signal spectra obtained from two identical near and far detectors. In the period between August 2011 and February 2018, the far (near) detector observed 103\,212 (850\,666) electron antineutrino candidate events with a background fraction of 4.7\% (2.0\%). A clear energy and baseline dependent disappearance of reactor $\overline{\nu}_e$ is observed in the deficit of the measured number of $\overline{\nu}_e$. Based on the measured far-to-near ratio of prompt spectra, we obtain $\sin^2 2 \theta_{13} = 0.0896 \pm 0.0048({\rm stat}) \pm 0.0048({\rm syst})$ and $|\Delta m_{ee}^2| =[2.68 \pm 0.12({\rm stat}) \pm 0.07({\rm syst})]\times 10^{-3}$~eV$^2$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, updated with rephrase in the text for clarity

Emission standards have grown increasingly stricter, consequently triggering greater interest in issues surrounding environmental pollution. In particular, soot and NOx released from DI diesel vehicles is considered to be the main source of air pollution in urban environments. However, the mechanics of fuel spray formation and the influence of the operating parameters on the resulting spray flame are not yet fully understood. In this study, the original KIVA code was modified to incorporate a detailed chemical reaction mechanism involving various species and multiple reaction steps to better understand the spray characteristics. n-Heptane, C7H16, was used as the representative fuel for diesel fuel, and the reaction mechanism for this fuel was composed of 66 species and 274 elementary reaction steps. The accuracy of the predicted results was demonstrated primarily by a comparison with experimental results. The numerical prediction of a specific operating condition for the parametric investigation correlates well with the experimental results.

We investigated the reaction of graphite oxide with water molecule in the air with X-ray diffraction, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction data show that the layer distance of graphite oxide increases when it becomes hydrated in the air. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectra reveal that hydrated graphite oxide in the air has phenol groups on its layer edges. The overall results indicate that graphite oxide reacts with water molecules in the air and phenol groups are formed in graphite oxide.

A series of coumarin based TACE inhibitors were designed to bind in S1' pocket of TACE enzyme based on their docking study. Twelve analogues were synthesized and most of compounds were active in vitro TACE enzyme inhibition as well as cellular TNF-α inhibition. Among these, 15l effectively inhibited the production of serum TNF-α by oral administration at a dose of 30 mg/kg. Compound 15l also showed a good oral bioavailability at 42% and effectively inhibited paw edema in rat carrageenan model. Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) study using genetic function approximation technique (GFA) and docking study were performed to confirm the series of coumarin core TACE inhibitors. QSAR model have been evaluated internally and externally using test set prediction. Through docking study of each molecule, it is validated that the electrostatic descriptors from the QSAR equation could explain the importance of S1' pocket and the TACE inhibitory activity well.

Korea has gradually increased the importance of effective disaster management while experiencing a large scale disaster accident. Existing constructed disaster management systems in Korea have operated their own system for each institution and for the difficulty in figuring out various disaster information at a glance so that it is limited to the management of a rapid disaster situation. Korea has presented the new paradigm of disaster management 3.0 based on open, sharing, communication, collaboration to suit the flow government 3.0 throughout information cooperation, related organization and communication with the public. As a result, it has developed a smart big board (SBB) which is a new disaster management system grasping the real time disaster situation by integrating the scattered information. This system can grasp a real time disaster situation based on a map to display the scattered information such as sensor, satellite, GIS and SNS data. This study introduces a smart big board and shows how the utilization of a smart big board through a field-based and expert analysis of disaster type, customizable functionality. Smart big board can make decisions in a real time disaster situation and quickly handle it by disseminating and analysing information in real time.

Etching characteristics for n-GaN on bias voltage were examined in various chemical solutions including the solutions not considered as etchants, n-GaN was not etched in HNO 3 and CH 3 COOH solutions during photo-enhanced electrochemical (PEC) etching under UV illumination of 90 mW/cm 2 . It was successfully etched in 1% CH 3 COOH solution by applying a bias larger than 0.6 V and the etch rate was increased to 23 nm/min at 1.5 V. Also, etching of n-GaN began to appear at 0.4 V in 0.05% HNO 3 solution. On the contrary, n-GaN was etched at a rate of 12 nm/ min in 0.04M KOH solution and 6 nm/min in 0.01M H 3 PO 4 solution even though the bias was not applied and -0.4 and -0.3 V were needed to stop the etching of n-GaN, respectively. The increase of etch rate on the reverse bias was shown for all the examined solutions and the critical bias for n-GaN etching was not varied on the UV illumination intensity.

MIC genes map to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and are distantly related to MHC class I genes. Recently, MICA/MICB-like genes have been described in nonhuman primates. In Macaca mulatta, three MICA/B-like genes could be identified: Mamu-MIC1, Mamu-MIC2, and Mamu-MIC3. We show here the isolation and characterization of rhesus macaque cosmid clones which carry the Mamu-MIC2 and Mamu-MIC3 genes. Neither the MIC2- and MIC3-coding sequences nor respective flanking sequences can be aligned unambiguously to either the human HLA-MICA or -MICB subregions, although MIC2 was found at a similar distance to the BAT1 gene as known for MICB in human. Thus, the characteristics allowing for a classification of primate MIC genes as being of the MICA or MICB types appear to have evolved after the separation of humans and rhesus monkeys from a common ancestor. Furthermore, also Mamu-MICD-containing cosmids could be isolated. In contrast to Mamu-MIC2 and Mamu-MIC3, the Mamu-MICD gene and its flanking sequences are highly conserved and orthologous to the human MICD subregion.

The sulfonation of polymers and the pervaporation behavior of asymmetric polymeric membranes are described in this study. We confirmed that the sulfonic acid group was successively introduced into the polymer chain by FTIR and 1H-NMR characterization. The phase diagram indicated that the modified polymer could have water tolerance, implying that the polymer–solvent miscibility was lower. The hyperthin skin layer, suitable for pervaporation, depended on the NMP–DGDE composition, which was important for the fabrication of an asymmetric membrane with high water permeance. The asymmetric membrane exhibited water selectivities equal to or slightly lower than those determined for the dense film. The hyperthin skin layer, which had hardly any defects, was possibly formed by the phase-inversion method. It is obvious that these membranes can be used for the industrial pervaporation process. The permeability and the selectivity of the water–butanol mixture for the asymmetric membranes at 50°C were measured. The permeation rates for water–butanol in the asymmetric membrane were about 80 times greater than those of film, and the separation factor was slightly lower. In this work, the optimal design of a crude oil distillation unit was made. Since the method used here is based on the general optimization framework, it is possible to design the process systematically. The results of this study gave better performances than that of the existing process. The process in this study is currently in operation and has the capacity of 150,000 BPSD. Feed locations, heat duties of pumparounds and operating conditions of the preheat train are selected as variables, and the energy consumption, operating cost and annual cost are formulated as objective functions. The optimal feed locations of both the main column and stabilizer are obtained by solving rigorous models and mixed integer nonlinear programming. Considering the results of the optimal feed tray, the cost optimization is carried over to obtain the optimal annual cost, which considers both the capital and operating cost, which is decreased from US$10,649,000/year to USdollar;9,185,230/year.

The magnetic properties of manganite bilayers composed of G-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrMnO3 and double-exchange ferromagnetic (FM) La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 are studied. A spin-glass state is observed as a result of competing magnetic orders and spin frustration at the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrMnO3 interface. The dependence of the irreversible temperature on the cooling magnetic field follows the Almeida-Thouless line. Although an ideal G-type AFM SrMnO3 is featured with a compensated spin configuration, the bilayers exhibit exchange bias below the spin glass freezing temperature, which is much lower than the Néel temperature of SMO, indicating that the exchange bias is strongly correlated with the spin glass state. The results indicate that the spin frustration that originates from the competition between the AFM super-exchange and the FM double-exchange interactions can induce a strong magnetic anisotropy at the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrMnO3 interface. The purpose of this study is developing an inertial sensor module system to measure gait event timings and analyzing the accuracy of calculated gait event timings by comparing synchronized 3D motion data. This system uses a single gyroscope module, attached at the heel, to collect gait event timings of heel strike, foot flat, heel off and toe off through automatic event detection algorithm. The algorithm is built to detect gait event timings through processing of pre-defined pitch data points from gyroscope. The 3-D motion capture system is synchronized to compare the accuracy between different gait event timings. In the experiment, six participants, one person at a time, walk at the three different paces of slow, normal, and fast; each participant performs 5 times of the experiment. The result shows that the absolute error is considerably small since the worst-case error is 37.4ms regardless of the different walking speeds. Therefore, this system can be implemented for the purpose of collecting more accurate and detailed gait event timings. Although this system is small, light, long-lasting and accurate, it is necessary for improvement on collecting other gait information such as walking speed and spatial variables.

Simple camera-based system for evaluation of lower limb alignment as a part of an automated cycling fitting system was developed and verified in this study. Developed imaging system can evaluate lower limb alignment quantitatively during pedaling using a general camcorder and single marker attached on the knee. Threshold-based marker detection algorithm with YCbCr color space was proposed in this study. Experiment was carried out to compare trajectory data from marker detection algorithm of the developed imaging system with trajectory data from 3-D motion analysis system. Result showed that average error between trajectories was 1.8mm (0.57%) of range of motion (ROM) of 326 mm in the vertical direction and 2.3mm (6.16%) of ROM of 37 mm in the medio-lateral direction. There existed significant correlation between two measured values (r=1.00 in the vertical direction and r=0.926 in the medio-lateral direction). It can be concluded that developed imaging system be applied to evaluate lower limb alignment which is an important factor for bicycle fitting.

We have studied the electronic structure and the magnetism of Cu-doped ZnO nanowires, which have been reported to show ferromagnetism at room temperature [G. Z. Xing ${et}$ ${al}$., Adv. Mater. {\bf 20}, 3521 (2008).], by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the XPS and XAS results, we find that the Cu atoms are in the "Cu$^{3+}$" state with mixture of Cu$^{2+}$ in the bulk region ($\sim$ 100 nm), and that "Cu$^{3+}$" ions are dominant in the surface region ($\sim$ 5 nm), i.e., the surface electronic structure of the surface region differs from the bulk one. From the magnetic field and temperature dependences of the XMCD intensity, we conclude that the ferromagnetic interaction in ZnO:Cu NWs comes from the Cu$^{2+}$ and "Cu$^{3+}$" states in the bulk region, and that most of the doped Cu ions are magnetically inactive probably because they are antiferromagnetically coupled with each other., 4 pages, 4 figures

We report on the electronic properties of superlattices composed of three different antiferromagnetic insulators, NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3 grown on SrTiO3 substrates. Photoemission spectra obtained by tuning the x-ray energy at the Mn 2p -> 3d edge show a Fermi cut-off, indicating metallic behavior mainly originating from Mn e_g electrons. Furthermore, the density of states near the Fermi energy and the magnetization obey a similar temperature dependence, suggesting a correlation between the spin and charge degrees of freedom at the interfaces of these oxides.

The design, fabrication, and characterization of a 0.85- mu m sensitive photoreceiver is described. The monolithically integrated optoelectronic receiver is based on pseudomorphic InGaAs on GaAs modulation-doped field-effect transistors (MODFETs) and metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodetectors. High-performance quarter-micrometer MODFETs with f/sub t/'s of approximately 70 GHz are utilized in a two-stage transimpedance amplifier. An asymmetric and a symmetric amplifier design are compared. The symmetric design is found to provide the desired zero DC offset voltage for a variety of supply voltages. Excess MSM-detector dark current and low-frequency internal gain are greatly reduced through the use of a silicon passivation layer and/or AlGaAs cap layer. Receiver transimpedances between 100 and 5000 Omega are obtained by varying the bias on an active feedback resistor. The parasitic capacitances of this common-gate feedback FET are studied. A transimpedance amplifier bandwidth as high as 14 GHz and an overall photoreceiver bandwidth of 11 GHz are measured. >

The structure of graphite oxide (GO) has been systematically studied using various tools such as SEM, TEM, XRD, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), 13C solid state NMR, and O K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). The TEM data reveal that GO consists of amorphous and crystalline phases. The XPS data show that some carbon atoms have sp3 orbitals and others have sp2 orbitals. The ratio of sp2 to sp3 bonded carbon atoms decreases as sample preparation times increase. The 13C solid-state NMR spectra of GO indicate the existence of -OH and -O- groups for which peaks appear at 60 and 70 ppm, respectively. FT-IR results corroborate these findings. The existence of ketone groups is also implied by FT-IR, which is verified by O K-edge XANES and 13C solid-state NMR. Graphite oxide is an amorphous insulator. Although several models have been suggested, its structure remains controversial. To elucidate this issue, 5 samples were prepared by the Brodie process and the Staudenmaier process. The electronic structure of graphite oxide was examined with x-ray absorption near edge structure and the ratio of $sp^{2}$ to $sp^{3}$ bonded carbon atoms was investigated with x-ray photoemission spectroscopy as a function of sample preparation times. It was found that this ratio approaches 0.3 exponentially with a characteristic time of 1.5 weeks. We believe this long characteristic time is the reason the structure has remained unclear.

A monolithically integrated optoelectronic receiver based on the pseudomorphic InGaAs on GaAs material system has been fabricated and tested for the first time. Quarter-micrometer modulation-doped field-effect transistors (MODFETs) with f/sub t/'s of 66 GHz are used in the two-stage transimpedance amplifier design. Polyurethane nanocomposites reinforced with organoclay or nanosilica were prepared by dispersing the filler during polymerization. The modulus and thermal stability of polyurethane were enhanced with the addition of fillers and the effect was more pronounced with organoclay than with nanosilica. The crystallization and damping behaviors showed that the mobility of polyurethane chain is restricted by the filler, and the effect was more evident with organoclay.

We report on resonant inelastic x-ray scattering studies of a one-dimensional quantum spin system ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{3}$. Data were taken at the $\mathrm{Cu}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}1s\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3d$ edge, which is expected to provide dd excitation spectra. The energy loss spectra show the lowest peak near $2.0\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$, smaller by $\ensuremath{\approx}0.6\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ than the lowest energy peak obtained at the $1s\ensuremath{\rightarrow}4p$ edge. The feature has a total dispersion of about $0.2\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ with a periodicity of $\ensuremath{\pi}$. While a comparison with optical measurements supports the interpretation of the data as being from dd excitations, the dispersion is apparently incompatible with theoretical results.

A high-speed and high-sensitivity vertical indium-tin-oxide-InAlAs-InGaAs Schottky barrier photodetector has been designed, fabricated, and characterized. The devices had dark current densities as low as 8.87/spl times/10/sup -5/ A/cm/sup -2/ at an applied bias of 5 V. The responsivity for all the devices tested ranged from 0.55-0.60 A/W at a wavelength of 1.31 /spl mu/m, and 0.563-0.583 A/W at 1.55 /spl mu/m. The 15-/spl mu/m diameter devices exhibited a -3 dB bandwidth of 19 and 25 GHz at a wavelength of 1.55 /spl mu/m and an applied bias of 5 and 10 V, respectively. These are the best values of responsivity and bandwidth for a vertical InGaAs-based Schottky-barrier photodetector reported to date.
