1. The INTEGRAL View on Black Hole X-ray Binaries

Abstract: INTEGRAL is an ESA mission in fundamental astrophysics that was launched in October 2002. It has been in orbit for over 18 years, during which it has been observing the high-energy sky with a set of instruments specifically designed to probe the emission from hard X-ray and soft -ray sources. This paper is devoted to the subject of black hole binaries, which are among the most important sources that populate the high-energy sky. We present a review of the scientific literature based on INTEGRAL data, which has significantly advanced our knowledge in the field of relativistic astrophysics. We briefly summarise the state-of-the-art of the study of black hole binaries, with a particular focus on the topics closer to the INTEGRAL science. We then give an overview of the results obtained by INTEGRAL and by other observatories on a number of sources of importance in the field. Finally, we review the main results obtained over the past 18 years on all the black hole binaries that INTEGRAL has observed. We conclude with a summary of the main contributions of INTEGRAL to the field, and on the future perspectives.

2. An ultrafast outflow in the black hole candidate MAXI J1810−222?

Abstract: The transient X-ray source MAXI J1810-222 was discovered in 2018 and has been active ever since. A long combined radio and X-ray monitoring campaign was performed with ATCA and Swift respectively. It has been proposed that MAXI J1810-222 is a relatively distant black hole X-ray binary, albeit showing a very peculiar outburst behaviour. Here, we report on the spectral study of this source making use of a large sample of NICER observations performed between 2019 February and 2020 September. We detected a strong spectral absorption feature at $\sim$1 keV, which we have characterised with a physical photoionisation model. Via a deep scan of the parameters space, we obtained evidence for a spectral-state dependent outflow, with mildly relativistic speeds. In particular, the soft and intermediate states point to a hot plasma outflowing at 0.05-0.15 $c$. This speeds rule-out thermal winds and, hence, they suggest that such outflows could be radiation pressure or (most likely) magnetically-driven winds. 5. A Black Hole X-ray Binary at ~100 Hz: Multiwavelength Timing of MAXI J1820+070 with HiPERCAM and NICER

Abstract: We report on simultaneous sub-second optical and X-ray timing observations of the low-mass X-ray binary black hole candidate MAXI J1820+070. The bright 2018 outburst rise allowed simultaneous photometry in five optical bands (ugrizs) with HiPERCAM/GTC (Optical) atf rame rates over 100 Hz, together with NICER/ISS observations (X-rays). Intense (factor of2) red flaring activity in the optical is seen over a broad range of time-scales down to∼10 ms. Cross-correlating the bands reveals a prominent anticorrelation on time-scales of ∼seconds, and a narrow sub-second correlation at a lag of≈+165 ms (optical lagging X-rays). This lag increases with optical wavelength, and is approximately constant over Fourier frequencies of∼0.3–10 Hz. These features are consistent with an origin in the inner accretion flow and jet base within∼5000 Gravitational radii. An additional∼+5 s lag feature may be ascribable to disc reprocessing. MAXI J1820+070 is the third black hole transient to display a clear∼0.1 s optical lag, which may be common feature in such objects. The sub-second lag variation with wavelength is novel, and may allow constraints on internal shock jet stratification models.

Abstract: The spectral evolution of transient X-ray binaries can be reproduced by an interplay between two flows separated at a radius $R_J$: a standard accretion disk (SAD) in the outer parts and a jet-emitting disk (JED) in the inner parts. In the previous papers of this series, we recover the spectral evolution in both X-rays and radio for four outbursts of GX339-4 by playing independently with the two parameters: $R_J$ and the accretion rate $\dot{M}_{in}$. In this paper, we compare the time evolution of $R_J$ and $\dot{M}_{in}$ for the four outbursts. We show that despite the undeniable differences between the time evolution of each outburst, a unique pattern in the $\dot{M}_{in}-R_J$ plane seems to be followed by all cycles within the JED-SAD model. We call this pattern a fingerprint, and show that even the 'failed' outburst considered follows it. We also compute the radiative efficiency in X-rays during the cycles and consider its impact on the radio--X-ray correlation. Within the JED-SAD paradigm, we find that the accretion flow is always radiatively efficient in the hard states, with between $15\%$ and $40\%$ of the accretion power being radiated away at any given time. Moreover, we show that the radiative efficiency evolves with the accretion rate because of key changes in the JED thermal structure. These changes give birth to two different regimes with different radiative efficiencies: the thick disk and the slim disk. While the existence of these two regimes is intrinsically linked to the JED-SAD model, we show direct observational evidence of the presence of two different regimes using the evolution of the X-ray power-law spectral index, a model-independent estimate. We then argue that these two regimes could be the origin of the gap in X-ray luminosity in the hard state, the wiggles and different slopes seen in the radio--X-ray correlation, and even the existence of outliers., replaced after language editing

Abstract: Whilst astronomy as a science is historically founded on observations at optical wavelengths, studying the Universe in other bands has yielded remarkable discoveries, from pulsars in the radio, signatures of the Big Bang at submm wavelengths, through to high energy emission from accreting, gravitationally-compact objects and the discovery of gamma-ray bursts. Unsurprisingly, the result of combining multiple wavebands leads to an enormous increase in diagnostic power, but powerful insights can be lost when the sources studied vary on timescales shorter than the temporal separation between observations in different bands. In July 2015, the workshop "Paving the way to simultaneous multi-wavelength astronomy" was held as a concerted effort to address this at the Lorentz Center, Leiden. It was attended by 50 astronomers from diverse fields as well as the directors and staff of observatories and spaced-based missions. This community white paper has been written with the goal of disseminating the findings of that workshop by providing a concise review of the field of multi-wavelength astronomy covering a wide range of important source classes, the problems associated with their study and the solutions we believe need to be implemented for the future of observational astronomy. 9. Spectral variability of GX 339−4 in a hard-to-soft state transition★

Abstract: We report on INTEGRAL observations of the bright black-hole transient GX 339-4 performed during the period August-September 2004. Our data cover three different spectral states, namely Hard/Intermediate State, Soft/Intermediate State and High/Soft State. We investigate the spectral variability of the source across the different spectral states. The hard X-ray spectrum becomes softer during the HIMS-to-SIMS transition, but it hardens when reaching the HSS state. A principal component analysis demonstrates that most of the variability occurs through two independent modes: a pivoting of the spectrum around 6 keV (responsible for 75% of the variance) and an intensity variation of the hard component (responsible for 21%). The pivoting is interpreted as due to changes in the soft cooling photon flux entering the corona, the second mode as fluctuations of the heating rate in the corona. Our spectral analysis of the spectra of GX 339-4 shows a high energy excess with respect to pure thermal Comptonisation models in the HIMS: a non-thermal power-law component seems to be requested by data. In all spectral states joint IBIS, SPI and JEM-X data are well represented by hybrid thermal/non-thermal Comptonisation (EQPAIR). The spectral evolution seems to be predominantly driven by a reduction of the ratio of the electron heating rate to the soft cooling photon flux in the corona, l_h/l_s. The inferred accretion disc soft thermal emission increases by about two orders of magnitude, while the Comptonised luminosity decreases by at most a factor of 3. Abstract: We present first INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observations of a Seyfert galaxy, the type 2 AGN NGC 4388. Several INTEGRAL observations performed in 2003 allow us to study the spectrum in the 20 - 300 keV range. In addition two XMM-Newton observations give detailed insight into the 0.2 - 10 keV emission. The measurements presented here and comparison with previous observations by BeppoSAX, SIGMA and CGRO/OSSE show that the overall spectrum from soft X-rays up to the gamma-rays can be described by a highly absorbed (N_H = 2.7e23 1/cm^2) and variable non-thermal component in addition to constant non-absorbed thermal emission (T = 0.8 keV) of low abundance (7% solar), plus a constant Fe K-alpha and K-beta line. The hard X-ray component is well described by a simple power law with a mean photon index of 1.7. During the INTEGRAL observations the 20 - 100 keV flux increased by a factor of 1.4. The analysis of XMM-Newton data implies that the emission below 3 keV is decoupled from the AGN and probably due to extended emission as seen in Chandra observations. Abstract: Supermassive black holes in the nuclei of active galaxies expel large amounts of matter through powerful winds of ionized gas. The archetypal active galaxy NGC 5548 has been studied for decades, and high-resolution x-ray and ultraviolet (UV) observations have previously shown a persistent ionized outflow. An observing campaign in 2013 with six space observatories shows the nucleus to be obscured by a long-lasting, clumpy stream of ionized gas not seen before. It blocks 90% of the soft x-ray emission and causes simultaneous deep, broad UV absorption troughs. The outflow velocities of this gas are up to five times faster than those in the persistent outflow, and, at a distance of only a few light days from the nucleus, it may likely originate from the accretion disk.

Abstract: Results are presented from a 500ks long XMM-Newton observation of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS13224-3809. The source is rapidly variable on timescales down to a few 100s. The spectrum shows strong broad Fe-K and L emission features which are interpreted as arising from reflection from the inner parts of an accretion disc around a rapidly spinning black hole. Assuming a power-law emissivity for the reflected flux and that the innermost radius corresponds to the innermost stable circular orbit, the black hole spin is measured to be 0.988 with a statistical precision better than one per cent. Systematic uncertainties are discussed. A soft X-ray lag of 100s confirms this scenario. Abstract: AGN exhibit complex hard X-ray spectra. Our current understanding is that the emission is dominated by inverse Compton processes which take place in the corona above the accretion disk, and that absorption and reflection in a distant absorber play a major role. These processes can be directly observed through the shape of the continuum, the Compton reflection hump around 30 keV, and the iron fluorescence line at 6.4 keV. We demonstrate the capabilities of Simbol-X to constrain complex models for cases like MCG-05-23-016, NGC 4151, NGC 2110, and NGC 4051 in short (10 ksec) observations. We compare the simulations with recent observations on these sources by INTEGRAL, Swift and Suzaku. Constraining reflection models for AGN with Simbol-X will help us to get a clear view of the processes and geometry near to the central engine in AGN, and will give insight to which sources are responsible for the Cosmic X-ray background at energies above 20 keV., 4 pages, 1 figure, to appear in the proceedings of the second Simbol-X Symposium "Simbol-X - Focusing on the Hard X-ray Universe", AIP Conf. Abstract: We present a new keplerian accretion disc solution, the so‐called Jet Emitting Disc (JED hereafter), which is part of global self‐consistent disc‐jet MHD structure. In our framework, a large scale, organized vertical magnetic field is threading the JED giving birth, when conditions are met, to stationnary self‐collimated non relativistic jets. The main condition is that the magnetic pressure Pmag must be of the order of the total pressure Ptot in the JED and a direct consequence is a jet torque largely dominating the viscuous torque. This in turn implies an accretion velocity of the order of the sound speed and then a density much lower than a standard accretion disc. Abstract: The present work investigates the calculation of absorption and emission cyclotron line profiles in the non-relativistic and trans-relativistic regimes. We provide fits for the ten first harmonics with synthetic functions down to 10^(-4) of the maximum flux with an accuracy of 20 per cent at worst. The lines at a given particle energy are calculated from the integration of the Schott formula over the photon and the particle solid angles relative to the magnetic field direction. The method can easily be extended to a larger number of harmonics. Abstract: We use both time-domain and Fourier techniques to study the correlated optical and X-rays variability in the black hole X-ray nova XTE J1118+480. Its X-ray timing properties, such as the shape of the X-ray power spectrum and cross-correlation functions (CCFs) between X-ray energy bands, the slight decrease of RMS variability from 30 % in the 2-5.9 keV to 19 % in the 15.5--44.4 keV band, as well as the X-ray hardness/flux anti-correlation, are very similar to what is found in other black hole binaries in the hard state. The optical/X-ray CCF is virtually independent of the X-ray energies. The optical flux appears to be correlated not only with the X-ray flux but also with the X-ray spectral variability. Both the coherence function and the lags between optical and the X-rays are Fourier frequency dependent. The optical/X-ray coherence function reaches its maximum (~0.3) in the 0.1-1 Hz range and the time-lags decrease with frequency approximatively like f^-0.8. The correlation between X-ray and optical light curves appears to have time-scale-invariant properties. The X-ray/optical CCF maintains a similar but rescaled shape on time-scales ranging at least from 0.1 s to few 10 s. Using the event superposition method we show that the correlation is not triggered by a single type of event (dip or flare) in the light curves. Instead, optical and X-ray fluctuations of very different shapes, amplitudes and time-scales are correlated in a similar mode where the optical light curve is seemingly related to the time derivative of the X-rays., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract: We investigate the radiative response of an accretion disk corona system to short soft photons flares originating from the disk. The coronal response to the soft photon shots produces a strongly non-linear Comptionised radiation output, with complex correlation/anti-correlations between energy bands. This behavior strongly differs from those found with usual linear calculations. These results show that the feedback effects from the corona are important and should be taken into account by any model invoking the soft photon flux variability as a source for the hard X-ray variability of X-ray binaries or Seyfert galaxies.

Abstract: We develop a self-consistent model of Seyfert galaxies continuum emission. High energy emission is produced by Inverse Compton process on soft photons emitted as thermal radiation by the accretion disk. Thermal emission is, at turn, entirely due to reprocessing of the impinging high energy photons. The high energy source is assumed to be an optically thin plasma of highly relativistic leptons ($e^+-e^-$), at rest at a given height on the disk axis. This warm source could be the result of a strong schock between an abortive jet coming from the disk and the interstellar medium. Such a geometry is highly anisotropic, which has a strong influence on Compton process. Monte-Carlo simulations allow the superposition of a reflected component (the so-called high energy bump) to the UV to X-ray spectrum obtained with our model, leading us to a first comparison with observations by fitting the high energy spectra of NGC4151 and IC4329a., 5 pages, 4 figures, Latex (aipproc.sty), to appear in proceedings of the 4th COMPTON Symposium, held in Williamsburg, VA

Abstract: In marine gravity interpretation, the density required for the Bouguer correction is not easily measured, and, therefore, one often uses either standard values or extrapolates density from a station or a profile to an entire survey. If the real density varies, this leads to inconsistencies. In this paper a method is proposed to eliminate as much as possible the gravimetrical effects of real density variations. The principle is to apply Nettleton's method to the whole space, but also to use a continuously variable density in the Bouguer gravity computation. It is possible to avoid affecting real gravity anomalies by using stations situated on suitable area elements the optimal size of which is determined by the program. The density that is obtained is called “processing density’ because it is not a real one, but rather the resultant of the densities affect on each station. Use of the method is demonstrated on an example from the southeastern part of Bay of Biscay.

Abstract: The increasing number of well characterised low-mass planets, combined with the valuable informations from stellar and planetary spectroscopy, opens the way to the modeling of planetary structures and compositions, which can be obtained with theoretical and numerical works. This approach gives a valuable insight to understand the formation of planetary systems in the low-mass range. We present a 1D planetary model where the interior is coupled with the atmosphere in radiative-convective equilibirum within a Bayesian retrieval scheme. In addition to a Fe core and a silicate mantle, we take into account water in all its possible phases, including steam and supercritical phases, which is necessary for systems with a wide range of stellar irradiations. Our interior-atmosphere model calculates the compositional and atmospheric parameters, such as Fe and water content, surface pressures, scale heights and albedos. We analyse the multiplanetary systems K2-138 and TRAPPIST-1, which present six low-mass planets with different densities and irradiations. From the individual composition of their planets, we derive a similar trend for both systems: a global increase on the water content with increasing distance from the star in the inner region of the systems, while the planets in the outer region present a constant water mass fraction. This trend reveals the possible effects of migration, formation location and atmospheric mass loss during their formation history.

Abstract: Titan’s haze is strongly suspected to be an HCN-derived polymer, but despite the first in situ measurements by the ESA-Huygens space probe, its chemical composition and formation process remain largely unknown. To investigate this question, we simulated in the laboratory, the atmospheric haze for- mation process. We synthesized analogues of Titan’s haze, named Titan tholins, in an irradiated N2–CH4 gas mixture, mimicking Titan’s upper atmosphere chemistry. HCN was monitored in situ in the gas phase simultaneously with the formation and evolution of the haze particles. We show that HCN is produced as long as the particles are absent, and is then progressively consumed when the particles appear and grow. This work highlights HCN as an effective precursor of Titan’s haze and confirms the HCN-derived polymer nature of the haze.

Abstract: Context. Elemental abundances in some coronal structures differ significantly from photospheric abundances, with a dependence on the first ionization potential (FIP) of the element. Measuring these FIP-dependent abundance biases is important for coronal and heliospheric physics. Aims. We aim to build a method for optimal determination of FIP biases in the corona from spectroscopic observations in a way that is in practice independent from Differential Emission Measure (DEM) inversions. Methods. We optimised linear combinations of spectroscopic lines of low-FIP and high-FIP elements so that the ratio of the corresponding radiances yields the relative FIP bias with good accuracy for any DEM in a small set of typical DEMs. Results. These optimised linear combinations of lines allow retrieval of a test FIP bias map with good accuracy for all DEMs in the map. The results also compare well with a FIP bias map obtained from observations using a DEM-dependent method. Conclusions. The method provides a convenient, fast, and accurate way of computing relative FIP bias maps. Abstract: International audience; In this contribution we give a brief overview of the effects of rotation, stellar winds, metallicity and binarity on the evolution of massive stars. We focus on the role of these parameters in shaping the end states of stellar evolution. Special attention is given to the mass of the stellar remnants that has been questionned by the detection of heavy black holes in merger events leading to gravitational waves emission.

Abstract: The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, >8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. Abstract: High-time-resolution X-ray observations of compact objects provide direct access to strong-field gravity, to the equation of state of ultra-dense matter and to black hole masses and spins. A 10 m^2-class instrument in combination with good spectral resolution is required to exploit the relevant diagnostics and answer two of the fundamental questions of the European Space Agency (ESA) Cosmic Vision Theme "Matter under extreme conditions", namely: does matter orbiting close to the event horizon follow the predictions of general relativity? What is the equation of state of matter in neutron stars? The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT), selected by ESA as one of the four Cosmic Vision M3 candidate missions to undergo an assessment phase, will revolutionise the study of collapsed objects in our galaxy and of the brightest supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. Thanks to an innovative design and the development of large-area monolithic Silicon Drift Detectors, the Large Area Detector (LAD) on board LOFT will achieve an effective area of ~12 m^2 (more than an order of magnitude larger than any spaceborne predecessor) in the 2-30 keV range (up to 50 keV in expanded mode), yet still fits a conventional platform and small/medium-class launcher. Abstract: Solar Wind Charge exchange X-ray (SWCX) imaging of the Earth’s magnetosheath will be the target of the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE), a joined ESA-CAS mission. The mission aims to study the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling through simultaneous X-ray and UV imaging and in situ plasma and magnetic field measurements. We present simulations of the SWCX emission produced in the Earth’s magnetosheath, developped in the framework of the Modeling Working Group (MWG, https://smile.alaska.edu/) which provides modeling support for the SMILE mission. The goal of the current study is to extend the application of a Test Particle model to input electric and magnetic fields from MHD simulations, and compare the X-ray emissivity maps to the ones from a pure MHD approach.

Abstract: Supermassive black holes in the nuclei of active galaxies expel large amounts of matter through powerful winds of ionized gas. The archetypal active galaxy NGC 5548 has been studied for decades, and high-resolution x-ray and ultraviolet (UV) observations have previously shown a persistent ionized outflow. An observing campaign in 2013 with six space observatories shows the nucleus to be obscured by a long-lasting, clumpy stream of ionized gas not seen before. It blocks 90% of the soft x-ray emission and causes simultaneous deep, broad UV absorption troughs. The outflow velocities of this gas are up to five times faster than those in the persistent outflow, and, at a distance of only a few light days from the nucleus, it may likely originate from the accretion disk., (Copyright © 2014, American Association for the Advancement of Science.)
