The final phase of the reionization process can be probed by rest-frame UV absorption spectra of quasars at z>6, shedding light on the properties of the diffuse intergalactic medium within the first Gyr of the Universe. The ESO Large Programme "XQR-30: the ultimate XSHOOTER legacy survey of quasars at z~5.8-6.6" dedicated ~250 hours of observations at the VLT to create a homogeneous and high-quality sample of spectra of 30 luminous quasars at z~6, covering the rest wavelength range from the Lyman limit to beyond the MgII emission. Twelve quasar spectra of similar quality from the XSHOOTER archive were added to form the enlarged XQR-30 sample, corresponding to a total of ~350 hours of on-source exposure time. The median effective resolving power of the 42 spectra is R~11400 and 9800 in the VIS and NIR arm, respectively. The signal-to-noise ratio per 10 km/s pixel ranges from ~11 to 114 at $\lambda \simeq 1285$ \AA rest frame, with a median value of ~29. We describe the observations, data reduction and analysis of the spectra, together with some first results based on the E-XQR-30 sample. New photometry in the H and K bands are provided for the XQR-30 quasars, together with composite spectra whose characteristics reflect the large absolute magnitudes of the sample. The composite and the reduced spectra are released to the community through a public repository, and will enable a range of studies addressing outstanding questions regarding the first Gyr of the Universe., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures. MICADO will equip the E-ELT with a first light capability for diffraction limited imaging at near-infrared wavelengths. The instrument's observing modes focus on various flavours of imaging, including astrometric, high contrast, and time resolved. There is also a single object spectroscopic mode optimised for wavelength coverage at moderately high resolution. This contribution provides an overview of the key functionality of the instrument, outlining the scientific rationale for its observing modes. The interface between MICADO and the adaptive optics system MAORY that feeds it is summarised. We present JHK photometry and spectroscopy for a sample of newly identified L and T dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and known dwarfs from the SDSS and the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). Spectral classification has been carried out using four infrared indices; we identify 9 new L8-9.5 dwarfs and 14 new T dwarfs from SDSS, including the latest SDSS dwarf yet found, the T7 SDSS J1758+4633. We classify 2MASS J0415-0935 as T9, the latest and coolest dwarf found to date. We combine these results with previously published data to produce a sample of 59 L dwarfs and 42 T dwarfs. We compare the near-IR colors and absolute magnitudes of dwarfs near the L-T transition with predictions made by models of the distribution and evolution of photospheric condensates. There is scatter in the spectral indices for L dwarfs, suggesting that these indices are probing different levels of the atmosphere. The near-IR colors of the L dwarfs also scatter, likely due to variations in the altitudes, spatial distributions and thicknesses of the condensate clouds. We identify a group of late L dwarfs that are blue for their spectral type and that have enhanced FeH, H2O and KI absorption, possibly due to an unusually small amount of condensates. The scatter seen in the H-K color for late T dwarfs can be reproduced by models with a range in surface gravity. The variation is probably due to the effect on the K-band flux of pressure-induced H2 opacity. The correlation of H-K color with gravity is supported by the strengths of the J-band KI doublet. Gravity is closely related to mass for field T dwarfs and the gravities implied by the H-K colors indicate that the T dwarfs in our sample have masses in the range 15-75 M_Jupiter, except for SDSS J1110+0116 which possibly has a mass of 10-15 M_Jupiter., Comment: 59 pages includes 12 Tables and 9 Figures, Figure 1a&b as jpgs under postscript format option for astroph.
