Objective Irritability is a common characteristic in ADHD. We examined whether dysfunction in neural connections supporting threat and reward processing was related to irritability in adolescents and young adults with ADHD. Method We used resting-state fMRI to assess connectivity of amygdala and nucleus accumbens seeds in those with ADHD ( n = 34) and an age- and gender-matched typically-developing comparison group ( n = 34). Results In those with ADHD, irritability was associated with atypical functional connectivity of both seed regions. Amygdala seeds showed greater connectivity with right inferior frontal gyrus and caudate/putamen, and less connectivity with precuneus. Nucleus accumbens seeds showed altered connectivity with middle temporal gyrus and precuneus. Conclusion The irritability-ADHD presentation is associated with atypical functional connectivity of reward and threat processing regions with cognitive control and emotion processing regions. These patterns provide novel evidence for irritability-associated neural underpinnings in adolescents and young adults with ADHD. The findings suggest cognitive and behavioral treatments that address response to reward, including omission of an expected reward and irritability, may be beneficial for ADHD.

Nevertheless, WM is not universally impaired in ADHD. Additionally, the neural basis for WM deficits in ADHD has not been conclusively established, with regions including the prefrontal cortex, cerebellum, and caudate being implicated. These contradictions may be related to conceptualizations of WM capacity, such as load (amount of information) versus operational-complexity (maintenance-recall or manipulation). For instance, relative to neurotypical (NT) individuals, complex WM operations could be impaired in ADHD, while simpler operations are spared. Alternatively, all operations may be impaired at higher loads. Here, we compared the impact of these two components of WM capacity: load and operational-complexity, between ADHD and NT, behaviorally and neurally. We hypothesized that the impact of WM load would be greater in ADHD, and the neural activation would be altered. Participants (age-range 12–23 years; 50 ADHD (18 females); 82 NT (41 females)) recalled three or four objects (load) in forward or backward order (operational-complexity) during functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning. The effects of diagnosis and task were compared on performance and neural engagement. Behaviorally, we found significant interactions between diagnosis and load, and between diagnosis, load, and complexity. Neurally, we found an interaction between diagnosis and load in the right striatum, and between diagnosis and complexity in the right cerebellum and left occipital gyrus. The ADHD group displayed hypo-activation compared to NT group during higher load and greater complexity. This informs mechanisms of functional problems related to WM in adolescents and young adults with ADHD (e.g., academic performance) and remedial interventions (e.g., WM-training).

Irritability is common in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but little is known about whether irritability predicts the course of ADHD symptoms over time. Adolescence is a dynamic period of emotional development as well as shifts in ADHD symptoms; an important goal is to identify youth at risk of increasing or persisting symptoms. We examined irritability as a longitudinal predictor of change in adolescents’ ADHD symptoms, as well as how this link may differ in females versus males. The sample included 108 youth (72 males) age 12–16 years (M = 14.21 years, SD = 1.44 years), 62 of whom met criteria for ADHD. Approximately 18 months later, 80 participants (48 males) were followed up at Time 2. A dimensional approach was used to examine changes over time in parent-reported inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms. Longitudinal path analysis revealed that irritability at Time 1 predicted higher relative hyperactive/impulsive symptoms at Time 2 after controlling for age and longitudinal stability in all variables. A multiple-group analysis examining moderation by sex/gender revealed that this association was significant only for females. These results suggest that irritability may play a key role in the persistence and worsening of hyperactive/impulsive symptoms across adolescence for females, with potential implications for the diagnosis and treatment of females with ADHD.

Diphenylurea (PU) crystallizes via slow evaporation from a range of solvents as phase pure α-PU or in a concomitant mixture with the less stable β-PU phase. Sublimation onto glass also yields α-PU in high phase purity. In contrast, sublimation onto siloxane-coated glass templates with various terminal groups (e.g., isocyanate, acetate, bromine) resulted in primarily β-PU. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the individual crystals on siloxanes exhibit a range of different morphologies (e.g., plates, needles, hollow tubes, spirals) which appear to be influenced by the terminal siloxane functionality. Under extended sublimation times (>5 h), mixtures of β and α become apparent on most siloxanes. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction studies showed that the β:α ratio changes as a function of distance from the siloxane, with more α-PU appearing at higher angles. Three bismuth-2,5-thiophenedicarboxylates (Bi-TDC) and two europium-2,5-thiophenedicarboxylates (Eu-TDC) were synthesized under ambient conditions. The structures were determined through single crystal X-ray diffraction, and three of the phases were further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Reactions of bismuth nitrate, 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate, and pyridine in an acidic solution of acetic acid and ethanol yield Hpy[Bi(TDC)2(H2O)]·1.5H2O (1), whereas reactions in a water/ethanol mixture produce a minor phase, [Hpy]3[Bi2(TDC)4(HTDC)(H2O)]·xH2O (2) along with a major product, (Hpy)2[Bi(TDC)2(HTDC)]·0.36H2O (3). The structures of 1-3 are all built from anionic Bi-TDC chains that are further bridged through additional TDC linkages into interpenetrated 2D sheets. Addition of an aqueous lanthanide solution to the reaction mixtures that yielded 1 and 2-3 resulted in the formation of doped phases, Hpy[Bi1-xLnx(TDC)2(H2O)]·1.5H2O (Bi1-xLnx-1), where Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, and Yb, and (Hpy)2[Bi0.99Eu0.01 (TDC)2(HTDC)]·0.36H2O (Bi0.99Eu0.01-3). Using europium nitrate rather than the bismuth precursor resulted in the formation of two homometallic europium based phases, [Eu(TDC)(NO3)(H2O)]n (4) and [Eu2(TDC)3(H2O)9]·5H2O (5), which adopt an extended 3D network and an interpenetrated 2D structure, respectively. Photophysical measurements were carried out for 1 and the lanthanide containing phases and quantum yield and lifetime values were determined for the visible light emitters. Herein, the structural chemistry, spectroscopic properties, and luminescence of the bismuth phases, their lanthanide doped analogs, and the europium compounds are presented.

We identify a novel contextual variable that alters the evaluation of delayed rewards in healthy participants and those diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). When intertemporal choices are constructed of monetary outcomes with rounded values (e.g., $25.00), discount rates are greater than when the rewards have nonzero decimal values (e.g., $25.12). This finding is well explained within a dual system framework for temporal discounting in which preferences are constructed from separate affective and deliberative processes. Specifically, we find that round dollar values produce greater positive affect than do nonzero decimal values. This suggests that relative involvement of affective processes may underlie our observed difference in intertemporal preferences. Furthermore, we demonstrate that intertemporal choices with rounded values recruit greater brain responses in the nucleus accumbens to a degree that correlates with the size of the behavioral effect across participants. Our demonstration that a simple contextual manipulation can alter self-control in ADHD has implications for treatment of individuals with disorders of impulsivity. Overall, the decimal effect highlights mechanisms by which the properties of a reward bias perceived value and consequent preferences.

Many geographic locations are without services and staff available to provide treatment for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This is a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of group parent training on ADHD treatment delivered via videoconferencing.Twenty-two subjects were enrolled in the study, with 9 subjects in the videoconference session (treatment group) and 13 in the face-to-face session (control group). The parent child relationship questionnaire for child and adolescents (PCQ-CA), Vanderbilt assessment scales (parent and teacher versions), children global assessment scale, clinical global impression-severity score, clinical global impression-improvement score, and social skills rating system assessed the effectiveness of the treatment. A Likert scale evaluated parents' acceptance of the training modality. Our results showed that the parent training program significantly improved parents' disciplinary practices based on the PRQ-CA, parent ratings of ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder symptoms, and the children's global functioning.The treatment effects did not differ between the videoconference and face-to-face groups; however, the videoconference group evidenced statistically greater improvement on the hyperactive symptoms of Vanderbilt assessment scales. Our findings suggest that parent training through a videoconferencing modality may be as effective as face-to-face training and is well accepted by parents.Parent training via videoconferencing may be an important tool for addressing ADHD in geographic locations that do not have access to appropriate treatment providers.

Objective: This study was designed to examine predictors of psychopathology in non-clinically referred, sexually abused (SA) children, ages 6–16 years, 30–60 days following abuse disclosure and termination. Method: Eighty SA children were administered a structured diagnostic interview and a variety of rating-scale instruments. Several forms of psychopathology were assessed, including posttraumatic stress, global functioning, anxiety, depression, and externalizing behavior. Abuse interviews also were used to guide the collection of demographic (victim age, gender) and abuse-related information (e.g., frequency of abuse). Results: Abuse-related factors and demographic variables accounted for greater than half of the variance predicting global functioning, and accurately predicted posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) status for 86% of the participants. Also, analyses yielded significant predictors of parent-reported attention problems and sexual behavior. Of additional importance, none of the abuse-related and demographic variables predicted scores on measures of general anxiety, depression, and externalizing behavior. Conclusions: Specific demographic and sexual abuse information may, to some extent, be used to identify children who are at increased risk for short-term post-abuse psychopathology. Although the present findings suggest that such information may not be useful in the prediction of general anxiety, depression, and externalizing behavior, demographic and abuse-related variables importantly appear to account for significant variance in the prediction of global functioning, posttraumatic stress, attentiveness, and sexual behavior. Additional research is needed to improve mental health professionals’ ability to identify SA children who are at high risk for psychopathology.

Objective To determine the prevalence of psychiatric symptoms and disorders found in non—clinically referred, sexually abused children (nCR-SAC), aged 6 to 16 years, during the 30− to 60-day period after disclosure and termination of abuse. Method Eighty nCR-SAC were compared with clinical and nonclinical groups of nonabused children matched by age, race, and socioeconomic status. Structured and semistructured interviews and standardized rating scales were used for assessment. Results More posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was found in the nCR-SAC than in the two comparison groups, and symptom severity was intermediate, except for symptoms of posttraumatic stress, trait anxiety, and depression, which were highest in the nCR-SAC. Conclusions Sexually abused children are at high risk for PTSD and symptoms of posttraumatic stress, anxiety, and depression in the immediate period after disclosure and termination of abuse. Findings indicate the need for routine and systematic evaluation for these symptoms and PTSD for treatment planning.

Older adults are the developmental age group across the lifespan at highest risk for suicide in many Western countries. Given the extent of the problem, the paucity of integrated and sound empirical research in this area is remarkable. Often the literature attributes the death to one or two variables (e.g., illness). However, a lifespan developmental approach calls for conceptualizing suicide in late adulthood from a multivariate perspective. This paper outlines two studies that were designed to investigate the suicide notes of the elderly in an adult lifespan perspective. The main conclusion is in support of a multivariate approach. There are more similarities than differences in suicide behaviour across the adult lifespan, although some differences were noted. The differences in the elderly appear to be issues of the inability to cope with the vicissitudes of aging (e.g., illness, isolation). It is concluded that future research is warranted.

This study compared erythrocyte changes between a group of subjects with sickle cell trait (SCT) and controls (subjects without hemoglobinopathy) during a soccer game in two conditions: with and without hydration. Erythrocyte deformability of subjects was assessed by the coefficient of erythrocyte rigidity (Tk) which was calculated before and after football match. Our results showed a significant increase in erythrocyte rigidity (Tk) in SCT at the end of physical activities without hydration; however when water was provided ad libitum their Tk decreased significantly, reaching values of controls. And adequate hydration is recommended in subjects with sickle cell trait during and after exercise.

Computerized working memory and executive function training programs designed to target specific impairments in executive functioning are becoming increasingly available, yet how well these programs generalize to improve functional deficits in disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), beyond the training context is not well-established. The aim of this study was to examine the extent to which working memory (WM) training in children with ADHD would diminish a core dysfunctional behavior associated with the disorder, “off-task” behavior during academic task performance. The effect of computerized WM training (adaptive) was compared to a placebo condition (nonadaptive) in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design in 26 children (18 males; age, 7 to 14 years old) diagnosed with ADHD. Participants completed the training in approximately 25 sessions. The Restricted Academic Situations Task (RAST) observational system was used to assess aspects of off-task behavior during the completion of an academic task. Traditional measures of ADHD symptoms (Conners’ Parent Rating Scale) and WM ability (standardized WM tests) were also collected. WM training led to significant reductions in off-task ADHD-associated behavior on the RAST system and improvement on WM tests. There were no significant differences between groups in improvement on parent rating scales. Findings lend insight into the generalizability of the effects of WM training and the relation between deficits in WM and off-task behavioral components of ADHD. These preliminary data suggest WM training may provide a mechanism for indirectly altering academic performance in children with ADHD.

The impedance behavior of semiconducting polymer film electrodes based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) in combination with a series of anionic dopants has been investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) over the frequency range from 0.1 Hz to 100 kHz. Films were electrodeposited on gold-coated Pt wire electrodes from a nonaqueous solution containing 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT). EIS results reveal that, under the optimal synthesis conditions, PEDOT electrodes consistently exhibit low, frequency-independent impedance over a wide frequency range (from ∼10 Hz to 100 kHz). These results suggest that the behavior originates from the two-layer homogeneous morphology of the film. A model for conduction in the films that is supported by experimental evidence is proposed, and EIS data for electrodes produced under a variety of electropolymerization conditions are presented.

Obesity is currently viewed as a serious worldwide public health issue. In this survey, we aim to determine its prevalence among schoolchildren and teenagers in Dakar. The sample of our survey consisted of 2,356 students aged 11-17, including 1,110 boys and 1,246 girls. For each of them, we have calculated their body mass index. Based on the higher value of the norm of that index, referred to the 97th percentile of Rolland-Cachera MF's curves, we have identified obese students according to their age and sex. The prevalence of obesity within our sample is 9.34%, with 2.88% for boys and 6.46% for girls. It is at its peak in the age of 11, though there is no significance (p0.05) in its decrease (from age 12 to 17). There are significantly (p0.05) more obese students in "catholic private" schools than in "public" schools where schooling is free. Child and teenage obesity is a reality in Dakar schools. Consequently, it is advisable to determine its nationwide prevalence to take on its prevention as well as its cure.

Attributional approaches to depression, such as hopelessness theory (Abramson, Metalsky, & Alloy, 1989), suggest that a stable, global attributional style for negative events combined with failure to achieve a highly valued outcome will lead to depression. The current study assessed the ability of the interaction of attributional style and daily negative events to predict self-reported depression in children. Eighty-four children between the ages of 9 and 12 participated in this longitudinal study. Self-reported depression symptoms were assessed before and after exposure to stressful events. The data analysis consisted of stepwise hierarchical multiple-regression procedures. While attributional style alone did not predict change in self-reported depression symptoms following stressful events, the interaction of attributional style with stress did predict them. Stress predicted depression symptoms as well.

Two cases of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) occurred in two French tourists during their visit in Senegal in November 2004. Febrile and hemorrhagic syndrome with ulorrhagia, petechiae, haematemesis, haematomas associated with biological signs of disseminated intramuscular coagulation were observed. For the first case who had a medical evacuation to France before diagnosis, Crimean-Congo virus infection was revealed by laboratory tests performed by the National Reference Center for Hemorrhagic Fevers (NRCHF, Institut Pasteur, Lyon) and secondly by the Centre de Référence OMS sur la Recherche des Arbovirus et des virus des Fièvres Hémorragiques (CRORA) in the Dakar Pasteur Institute (DPI). The second case diagnosed by the CRORA died after clinical deterioration with liver failure and severe haemorrhages. Healthcare workers and family members who had contact with tissue or blood from patients were followed up after the putative exposure either in France or in Senegal.

Pysical activity and sports training can be proved exhausted for the organism during normal alimentation period. These sensations may go on more pronounced during Ramadan, period of complete fast marked by an absence of energetic and hydroelectrolytic supply. Our propose was to evaluate the impact of Ramadan on weight, performance and glycaemia during a training for resistance.Ten Senegalese males 200 and 400 meters runners aged 24.4 +/- 6 years old had two training sessions, one during the Ramadan and the other during normal non fast time. The 200 meters runners had executed each one two series of 3 x 150 m, and the 400 meters runners executed one serie of 3 x 250 m. These parameters have been measured respectively by a SECA scales, a PC 70 A chronometer, and a capillary glycaemia reader.During Ramadan the weights a nd performances of our athletes decreased significantly (0.01p0.001) with race intensities equal to or slightly higher than those of competition, requiring anaerobic glycolysis. We found severe hypoglycaemia mainly before the training session, 10 hours after the last meal. We found no severe hypoglycaemia in normal non-fast time. Therefore all differences in average glycaemia rates in each testing case (except between the morning and after training in time of complete fast) a nd between them, a re significant. The performance fall is the conjugation of the blood sugar rate collapse a nd recovery.A balance diet with high content of carbon hydrates is a dvisable to prevent h ypoglycaemia that c an a dversely affect the health of fasting sportsman training for resistance.

The follow-up of performances and the prevention about possible incidents at the athletes make necessary the medical supervision in physical training. The aims of this study are to estimate the effect of a precompetition training program in athletes' body composition, and cardiovascular modifications (in clinical examination and electrocardiogram)Ten athletes (3 men and 7 women; mean age of 23.6 +/- 3.16 years) of Dakar international Athletics' Center are subjected to a training on a period of 2 months in aerobic dominant followed by a period of 3 months in anaerobic dominant. At the beginning and the end of training program, an electrocardiogram is recorded after blood pressure (BP) measure in lying and standing posture and heart rate (HR) take. The weight, height and cutaneous folds are measured to calculate the body fat percentage, fat body mass, fat-free mass and body mass index. Every athlete has performed the Ruffier test Comparisons are realized by the paired t-test, statistically significant for a p value0,05 RESULTS: Significant declines after training interest HR (79.2 +/- 14.7 vs 63.2 +/- 10.25 beat min(-1); p0.001), systolic BP in standing posture (11.8 +/- 0.44 vs 10.6 +/- 0.96 mmHg; p= 0.02), and Ruffier index (4.4 +/- 3.28 vs 2.23 +/- 1.62; p= 0.048) whereas the fat-free mass increased (53.14 +/- 8.41 vs 54.16 +/- 9.67 kg; p= 0.046). At the electrocardiogram, the number of athletes having sinusal bradycardia is crossed from 1 to 4; there is no modification as for the two cases of uncomplete right bundle-branch block and the pre-existent left ventricular hypertrophy. Negative T waves in V1 and V2 leads are present in one athlete before training and in two others after.The impact of the specific training on body is real, interesting more the cardiovascular system.

It is absolutely essential to acquire the basic techniques of high and long jumps in the initial stage of training when relevant global gestures are learned, as well as during further training for the improvement of such techniques. Our purpose is to identify a number of gestures which are not in keeping with elements of the required techniques. It concerns execution mistakes, which we call "limiting criteria". because they are more or less likely to have an adverse effect on performances. In order to identify them, we used pictures, filming and recording, by category of jump, 4 to 5 successive attempts of each one of 48 subjects selected for our study. The best attempt was viewed 5 times either in normal or slow motion, or picture by picture. For each criterium at the end of the impulse, we compared the average of performances of students who did not make mistakes to those of the critenum concerned. Our results show that, except for two criteria. all the averages differencies are significant to P Probabilities between either .05 and .01 or less than .001. This attest that some criteria have a less adverse effect than others, but that all criteria constitute hindrances to good performance. Therefore, they must be taken into account by anyone intervening in sports and/or physical education who is anxious of the output of his athletes or students.

Seven sportsmen, 100 meters and 400 meters runners are submitted to an effort test of 30 seconds. The subjects are on average 23.7 +/-2 years old. The purpose of our work is to study on the one hand the evlution of the anaerobic power. the heart rate and the lactic acid in blood during and after a bicycle test. and their relation, and on the other hand. to know the suitable pratical importance of the heart rate and the lactic acid in blood in connection with the intermittent efforts recovery aiming the anaerobic power developpement. These physiological parameters have been measured by a Monark bicycle 864, a sport-tester PE 3000 and a spectrophotometer JASCO 7800 UV/VIS. The power and the heart rate increase quickly in the 5 first seconds. Our subjects reach their average maximal anaerobic power at the 10th second, and then this power decreases progressively, while the heart rate continues to increase, without being maximal at the end of te test. Five minutes later it decreases in a half, while the lactic acid level calculated at the 30th second is continuing significantly. We have not found a significant relation between the measured parameters at the test stopping and during the recovery period (except between the lactic acid and the recovery index of the heart rate at the 25th minute). The lactic acid in blood would inform better about a good recovery during an interval training effort.

350 boys and 350 girls 7 to 13 years of age that are equally divided into 7 age groups according to sex, have been submitted to action speed tests (pure speed), co-ordination-speed, pure-power, co-ordination-power, flexibility and balance. The objective of our study was to compare the average evolution of each of these qualities according sex and age. From 7 to 13 boys were more performing than the girls in the first four tests; it's the opposite when il comes to the last two ones. Yet, the differences shown on both sides were not altogether significant but in action--speed (except at 9) and in flexibility. The two sexes were significantly different at the age of 7 and from 9 to 10 in balance, from 10 to 13 in pure-power, from 11 to 13 in co-ordination-power and from 12 to 13 in co-ordination-speed. It is often from the age of 7 to 9 or 10 that the average yearly gains of the performances are significant. Among the girls, they undergo more noticeable reductions from 9 or 10 until 12, before to decrease between 12 and 13 (in pure speed, co-ordination-speed and pure power), whereas the boys', for all the above mentioned physical qualities, remain unchanged or increase in a more significant way (except in flexibility). These significant results suggest a diversification of motor learning contents for boys and girls of the same age, or of different age according to sex.

Sixteen athletes were divided into 2 equal groups, A and B. Then, they were put through a series of repetitive trial exercises consisting in a sequence of 400 m races run to a sub-maximum speed (75% of maximum speed) and with pauses of a length of time equal to race time, and repeated to exhaustion, i.e., inability to keep up required speed. Recuperation in between races varied: Group A was completely passive, motionless; Group B was still going, albeit rather slowly. The parameters measured included blood concentration of lactic acid at rest and on completion of exercise and overall distance covered. At rest, there was a significant difference of lactatemia between the two groups. During the exercise, the distance run by Group B was longer (by 187.5 m) that that covered by Group A, though the difference was not significant (0.05P0.10), but his lactatemia was significantly much lower (P0.05). On average, the race speed and the time for recuperation which were alternatively measured were just the same for the two groups.
