The objectives of NSTX-U research are to reinforce the advantages of STs while addressing the challenges. To extend confinement physics of low- A , high beta plasmas to lower collisionality levels, understanding of the transport mechanisms that set confinement performance and pedestal profiles is being advanced through gyrokinetic simulations, reduced model development, and comparison to NSTX experiment, as well as improved simulation of RF heating. To develop stable non-inductive scenarios needed for steady-state operation, various performance-limiting modes of instability were studied, including MHD, tearing modes, and energetic particle instabilities. Predictive tools were developed, covering disruptions, runaway electrons, equilibrium reconstruction, and control tools. To develop power and particle handling techniques to optimize plasma exhaust in high performance scenarios, innovative lithium-based solutions are being developed to handle the very high heat flux levels that the increased heating power and compact geometry of NSTX-U will produce, and will be seen in future STs. Predictive capabilities accounting for plasma phenomena, like edge harmonic oscillations, ELMs, and blobs, are being tested and improved. In these ways, NSTX-U researchers are advancing the physics understanding of ST plasmas to maximize the benefit that will be gained from further NSTX-U experiments and to increase confidence in projections to future devices.

Tungsten peaking is predicted in the core of a WEST plasma with total-f gyrokinetic simulations, including both collisional and turbulent transport. This prediction is validated with a synthetic diagnostic of the bolometry. Although nitrogen impurities are shown to reduce the neoclassical peaking of tungsten on-axis, the overall tungsten peaking increases when nitrogen impurities are present, as they reduce the turbulence screening off-axis. This finding is important for the plasma current ramp-up phase of ITER, where light impurities seeding will be desirable to achieve low temperatures at the plasma-facing components and reduce tungsten sputtering. It provides further argument for applying early ECRH heating to maintain margins on the core power balance. The neoclassical peaking factor is cross-verified between XGC and FACIT. The heat flux at separatrix and the heat load width are modeled by XGC and compared to WEST data.

Axisymmetric (n = 0) density fluctuations measured in the TCV tokamak are observed to possess a frequency f0 which is either varying (radially dispersive oscillations) or a constant over a large fraction of the plasma minor radius (radially global oscillations) as reported in a companion paper (Z Huang et al, this issue). Given that f0 scales with the sound speed and given the poloidal structure of density fluctuations, these oscillations were interpreted as Geodesic Acoustic Modes, even though f0 is in fact smaller than the local linear GAM frequency . In this work we employ the Eulerian gyrokinetic code GENE to simulate TCV relevant conditions and investigate the nature and properties of these oscillations, in particular their relation to the safety factor profile. Local and global simulations are carried out and a good qualitative agreement is observed between experiments and simulations. By varying also the plasma temperature and density profiles, we conclude that a variation of the edge safety factor alone is not sufficient to induce a transition from global to radially inhomogeneous oscillations, as was initially suggested by experimental results. This transition appears instead to be the combined result of variations in the different plasma profiles, collisionality and finite machine size effects. Simulations also show that radially global GAM-like oscillations can be observed in all fluxes and fluctuation fields, suggesting that they are the result of a complex nonlinear process involving also finite toroidal mode numbers and not just linear global GAM eigenmodes. Understanding the multi-scale neoclassical and turbulence physics in the edge region (pedestal + scrape-off layer (SOL)) is required in order to reliably predict performance in future fusion devices. We explore turbulent characteristics in the edge region from a multi-scale neoclassical and turbulent XGC1 gyrokinetic simulation in a DIII-D like tokamak geometry, here excluding neutrals and collisions. For an H-mode type plasma with steep pedestal, it is found that the electron density fluctuations increase towards the separatrix, and stay high well into the SOL, reaching a maximum value of . Blobs are observed, born around the magnetic separatrix surface and propagate radially outward with velocities generally less than 1 km s−1. Strong poloidal motion of the blobs is also present, near 20 km s−1, consistent with E × B rotation. The electron density fluctuations show a negative skewness in the closed field-line pedestal region, consistent with the presence of ‘holes’, followed by a transition to strong positive skewness across the separatrix and into the SOL. These simulations indicate that not only neoclassical phenomena, but also turbulence, including the blob-generation mechanism, can remain important in the steep H-mode pedestal and SOL. Prior to eruptive events such as edge localized modes (ELMs), quasicoherent fluctuations, referred to as pedestal modes, are observed in the edge of fusion devices. We report on the investigations of nonlinear coupling between these modes during quasistationary inter-ELM phases leading to the ELM onset. Three dominant modes, with density and magnetic signatures, are identified as key players in the triggering mechanism of certain classes of ELMs. We demonstrate that one of these modes is amplified by the two others through three wave interactions. The amplified mode is radially shifted relative to the other two modes towards the last-closed flux surface as the ELM event approaches. Our results suggest that nonlinear coupling of pedestal modes, associated with radial distortions pushing out of the pedestal, is a possible mechanism for the triggering of low frequency ELMs relevant for future fusion devices.

The transbilayer distribution of phospholipids in chicken brain microsomal membranes has been investigated using trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid and phospholipase C from Clostridium welchii. The exposure of intact microsomes to trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid showed that the labelling of aminophospholipids followed biphasic kinetics, indicating that these membranes contain a fast- and a slow-reacting pool of aminophospholipids. Use of microsomes radioiodinated on their surface led to the conclusion that the fast-reacting pool may be located on the outer leaflet of the microsomal vesicles. It contains about 35% of the phosphatidylethanolamine, 29% of the ethanolamine plasmalogens and 18% of the phosphatidylserine. The treatment of intact microsomes with the phospholipase C Cl. welchii produced the hydrolysis of 50% of the phospholipids without any loss of their permeability properties, indicating that they are not permeable to the hydrolase. Phospholipids extracted from the microsomes were hydrolyzed rapidly by the phospholipase C with the exception of phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylinositol. In intact microsomes about 90% of phosphatidylcholine, 32% of ethanolamine phospholipids and 60% of sphingomyelin were accessible to the phospholipase. These results suggest that the phospholipids have an asymmetric distribution in chicken brain microsomes, the external leaflet containing about 75% of the choline phospholipids and 25% of the aminophospholipids, whereas an opposite distribution is observed in the inner leaflet.
