The Paediatric Rheumatology International Trials Organisation (PRINTO) criteria for clinically inactive disease (CID) and their proposal for glucocorticoid tapering do not consider MRI findings, despite the growing use of MRI and development of reliable MRI scoring tools. We aim to evaluate how CID correlates with MRI scores and physician decision making. We retrospectively used the Juvenile Dermatomyositis Imaging Score (JIS) to score MRIs of all children with JDM over a 10-year period. Demographic, diagnosis, treatment and core set measures data were collected. Correlation between CID and JIS was assessed as well as correlation with the physician treatment decision. There were 25 patients with 59 follow-up episodes to analyse correlation between physician treatment decision and JIS; and 50 episodes for the CID category and JIS correlation. JIS was not significantly associated with the CID category but did correlate with the physician decision. No significant association was found between clinical decision and CID category. The JIS area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.80 (95% CI 0.62–0.99) with a score ≥ 8 to predict an escalation. JIS sensitivity and specificity were both 78% with accuracy of 78%, compared to only 67%, 46% and 49%, respectively, for the CID criteria. Clinical criteria alone are not sufficient to assess disease activity status. Clinical decision trends correlated to MRI findings but not PRINTO CID criteria. Multi centre prospective studies are needed to replicate our findings and establish how to best use MRI as a biomarker of disease activity.

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a second-generation direct dark matter experiment with spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering sensitivity above $1.4 \times 10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ for a WIMP mass of 40 GeV/c$^{2}$ and a 1000 d exposure. LZ achieves this sensitivity through a combination of a large 5.6 t fiducial volume, active inner and outer veto systems, and radio-pure construction using materials with inherently low radioactivity content. The LZ collaboration performed an extensive radioassay campaign over a period of six years to inform material selection for construction and provide an input to the experimental background model against which any possible signal excess may be evaluated. The campaign and its results are described in this paper. We present assays of dust and radon daughters depositing on the surface of components as well as cleanliness controls necessary to maintain background expectations through detector construction and assembly. Finally, examples from the campaign to highlight fixed contaminant radioassays for the LZ photomultiplier tubes, quality control and quality assurance procedures through fabrication, radon emanation measurements of major sub-systems, and bespoke detector systems to assay scintillator are presented., Comment: 45 pages (79 inc. tables), 7 figures, 9 tables

The development of laser wakefield accelerators (LWFA) over the past several years has led to an interest in very compact sources of X-ray radiation – such as “table-top” free electron lasers. However, the use of conventional undulators using permanent magnets also implies system sizes which are large. In this work, we assess the possibilities for the use of novel mini-undulators in conjunction with a LWFA so that the dimensions of the undulator become comparable with the acceleration distances for LWFA experiments (i.e., centimeters). The use of a prototype undulator using laser machining of permanent magnets for this application is described and the emission characteristics and limitations of such a system are determined. Preliminary electron propagation and X-ray emission measurements are taken with a LWFA electron beam at the University of Michigan.

We describe the design and assembly of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment, a direct detection search for cosmic WIMP dark matter particles. The centerpiece of the experiment is a large liquid xenon time projection chamber sensitive to low energy nuclear recoils. Rejection of backgrounds is enhanced by a Xe skin veto detector and by a liquid scintillator Outer Detector loaded with gadolinium for efficient neutron capture and tagging. LZ is located in the Davis Cavern at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. When Cooper pairs are formed with finite center-of-mass momentum, the defining characteristic is a spatially modulating superconducting energy gap $\Delta(r)$. Recently, this concept has been generalized to the pair density wave (PDW) state predicted to exist in a variety of strongly correlated electronic materials such as the cuprates. Although the signature of a cuprate PDW has been detected in Cooper-pair tunnelling, the distinctive signature in single-electron tunneling of a periodic $\Delta(r)$ modulation has never been observed. Here, using a new approach, we discover strong $\Delta(r)$ modulations in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$+$\delta$ that have eight-unit-cell periodicity or wavevectors $Q=2{\pi}/a_0(1/8,0)$; $2{\pi}/a_0(0,1/8)$. This constitutes the first energy-resolved spectroscopic evidence for the cuprate PDW state. An analysis of spatial arrangements of $\Delta(r)$ modulations then reveals that this PDW is predominantly unidirectional, but with an arrangement of nanoscale domains indicative of a vestigial PDW. Simultaneous imaging of the local-density-of-states $N(r,E)$ reveals electronic modulations with wavevectors $Q$ and $2Q$, as anticipated when the PDW coexists with superconductivity. Finally, by visualizing the topological defects in these $N(r,E)$ density waves at $2Q$, we discover them to be concentrated in areas where the PDW spatial phase changes by $\pi$, as predicted by the theory of half-vortices in a PDW state. The IceTop air shower array is the surface component of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the geographical South Pole. The analysis was performed using only information from IceTop. The data used in this work were taken from June 1, 2010 to May 13, 2011. During that period the IceTop array consisted of 73 stations, compared to 81 in its final configuration. The measured spectrum exhibits a clear deviation from a single power law above the knee around 4 PeV and below 1 EeV. We observe spectral hardening around 18 PeV and steepening around 130 PeV., Published by Soc., [S.l.]

We apply deep neural networks (DNN) to data from the EXO-200 experiment. In the studied cases, the DNN is able to reconstruct the relevant parameters - total energy and position - directly from raw digitized waveforms, with minimal exceptions. For the first time, the developed algorithms are evaluated on real detector calibration data. The accuracy of reconstruction either reaches or exceeds what was achieved by the conventional approaches developed by EXO-200 over the course of the experiment. Most existing DNN approaches to event reconstruction and classification in particle physics are trained on Monte Carlo simulated events. Such algorithms are inherently limited by the accuracy of the simulation. We describe a unique approach that, in an experiment such as EXO-200, allows to successfully perform certain reconstruction and analysis tasks by training the network on waveforms from experimental data, either reducing or eliminating the reliance on the Monte Carlo., Accepted version. 33 pages, 28 figures

A search for instability of nucleons bound in Xe136 nuclei is reported with 223 kg·yr exposure of Xe136 in the EXO-200 experiment. Lifetime limits of 3.3×1023 and 1.9×1023 yr are established for nucleon decay to Sb133 and Te133, respectively. These are the most stringent to date, exceeding the prior decay limits by a factor of 9 and 7, respectively.

Recently, IceCube found evidence for a diffuse signal of astrophysical neutrinos in an energy range of $60\,\mathrm{TeV}$ to the $\mathrm{PeV}$-scale. The origin of those events, being a key to understanding the origin of cosmic rays, is still an unsolved question. So far, analyses have not succeeded to resolve the diffuse signal into point-like sources. Searches including a maximum-likelihood-ratio test, based on the reconstructed directions and energies of the detected down- and up-going neutrino candidates, were also performed on IceCube data leading to the exclusion of bright point sources. In this paper, we present two methods to search for faint neutrino point sources in three years of IceCube data, taken between 2008 and 2011. The first method is an autocorrelation test, applied separately to the northern and southern sky. The second method is a multipole analysis, which expands the measured data in the northern hemisphere into spherical harmonics and uses the resulting expansion coefficients to separate signal from background. With both methods, the results are consistent with the background expectation with a slightly more sparse spatial distribution, corresponding to an underfluctuation. Depending on the assumed number of sources, the resulting upper limit on the flux per source in the northern hemisphere for an $E^{-2}$ energy spectrum ranges from $1.5 \cdot 10^{-8}\,\mathrm{GeV}/(\mathrm{cm}^2 \mathrm{s})$, in the case of one assumed source, to $4 \cdot 10^{-10} \,\mathrm{GeV}/(\mathrm{cm}^2 \mathrm{s})$, in the case of $3500$ assumed sources., Comment: 35 pages, 16 figures, 1 table

Incentives designed to spur the adoption of agroforestry practices by farmers across the United States have largely been ineffective. Unfortunately, most Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) contracts are composed of temporary grassland conversions, not permanent forest land conversions. Using data collected from forestry and livestock producers, we estimate the minimum payment necessary for producers to adopt the agroforestry practice of silvopasture. Results indicate that CRP contracts based on silvopasture or other integrated systems may be a more efficient alternative than contracts based on complete conversion to forest land. However, successful implementation of such a policy requires a well-informed producer base whose behavior can be nudged towards integrated systems.

Macrophages take advantage of the antibacterial properties of copper ions in the killing of bacterial intruders. However, despite the importance of copper for innate immune functions, coordinated efforts to exploit copper ions for therapeutic interventions against bacterial infections are not yet in place. Here we report a novel high-throughput screening platform specifically developed for the discovery and characterization of compounds with copper-dependent antibacterial properties toward methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). We detail how one of the identified compounds, glyoxal-bis(N4-methylthiosemicarbazone) (GTSM), exerts its potent strictly copper-dependent antibacterial properties on MRSA. Our data indicate that the activity of the GTSM-copper complex goes beyond the general antibacterial effects of accumulated copper ions and suggest that, in contrast to prevailing opinion, copper complexes can indeed exhibit species- and target-specific activities. Based on experimental evidence, we propose that copper ions impose structural changes upon binding to the otherwise inactive GTSM ligand and transfer antibacterial properties to the chelate. In turn, GTSM determines target specificity and utilizes a redox-sensitive release mechanism through which copper ions are deployed at or in close proximity to a putative target. According to our proof-of-concept screen, copper activation is not a rare event and even extends to already established drugs. Thus, copper-activated compounds could define a novel class of anti-MRSA agents that amplify copper-dependent innate immune functions of the host. To this end, we provide a blueprint for a high-throughput drug screening campaign which considers the antibacterial properties of copper ions at the host-pathogen interface.

The existence of electronic symmetry breaking in the underdoped cuprates, and its disappearance with increased hole-density $p$, are now widely reported. However, the relationship between this transition and the momentum space ($\vec{k}$-space) electronic structure underpinning the superconductivity has not been established. Here we visualize the $\vec{Q}$=0 (intra-unit-cell) and $\vec{Q}\neq$0 (density wave) broken-symmetry states simultaneously with the coherent $\vec{k}$-space topology, for Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+d}$ samples spanning the phase diagram 0.06$\leq p \leq$0.23. We show that the electronic symmetry breaking tendencies weaken with increasing $p$ and disappear close to $p_c$=0.19. Concomitantly, the coherent $\vec{k}$-space topology undergoes an abrupt transition, from arcs to closed contours, at the same $p_c$. These data reveal that the $\vec{k}$-space topology transformation in cuprates is linked intimately with the disappearance of the electronic symmetry breaking at a concealed critical point., Journal reference added. Chapter 9 offers a reading of the concluding paragraphs of More’s Utopia to illustrate how the work depicts his ideal world and Tudor society as two distinct theatres shaping and conditioning their members’ attitudes and expectations. The illusory values of contemporary society are contrasted with those of the imagined alternative. The fictional More (Morus) and the traveller relating his observations of Utopia (Hythlodaeus) belong to different, socially constructed value systems and the reader is accordingly required to chose between them.

In the early-modern period, utopian thinking faced a much more pervasive approach to envisaging the transformation of politics and society—the belief in a coming, if not imminent, millennium. As this chapter explains, the antithesis between them hinged round concepts of formality and informality. Formality has to be seen as essential to the meaning and embodiment of liberty and authority, as well as their reconciliation, in the period. Utopia, as an embodiment of the aspiration to socio-political order, embraced formality and its conception of freedom. Powerful currents of millennialism and providentialism sought to free God’s instruments from formality, seen as a barrier to or distraction from the essence of true religion, close to hypocrisy and idolatry.

This chapter continues the exploration of ideas of formality and its antithesis as contexts for mid-seventeenth-century radicalism and utopianism. The attack on formality reached a new intensity in the decades of the English Revolution (1640–60) being embedded in legislation against formality as part of the Blasphemy Act of 1650. This essay suggests that antiformalism opened up but, in key ways, also closed down radical possibilities in the period. Concern about formality is shown to be a central feature of both mainstream reformation thinking and that of its critics. It epitomised those attitudes which set the letter against the spirit, form against substance, the law against grace, fleshly invention against the things of God. But wrestling with antiformalism also proved frustrating and complex.

The thesis of Chapter 7 is that the language of freedom and liberty in the seventeenth century had markedly different connotations from its modern usage and that this has significant implications for a radical language of liberty/freedom in the period. Rather than being seen as antithetical, liberty and authority were seen as complementary. Civil freedom was commonly identified with having a standing law to live by. In the religious sense, liberty was widely taken to imply submission to the will of a God of millennial purpose and providential power. The polarisation of liberty and authority in traditional accounts of the puritan revolution, the reduction of religious liberty to an element within a greater struggle over constitutional forms and the identification of religious liberty with individual and corporate rights are called in question.

Against a background of contested interpretative complexity, Chapter 8 explores More’s Utopia as an attempt to address the problems of the good life in both contemporary society and an imagined alternative and to explore how the optimum state of a commonwealth could be built around deficient human beings. More drew on three types of resource: classical learning, the ‘possibilities’ opened by the discovery of the New World, and the metaphor of the theatre as furnishing inspiration for alternative paradigms. Central to Utopia was a claim that people always act rationally in pursuit of their perceived interests. Could society be restructured so that those perceptions motivated socially productive, rather than destructive, outcomes? Could a society of friends, rather than mutually competitive enemies, be imaginatively realised? Can wisdom and power ever be reconciled?

Chapter 2 examines the problems confronting late twentieth-century historiography in dealing with the exceptionalism of a significant body of English radical political thought emerging in the 1640s and continuing into the 1650s. The failure of those ideas to achieve their objectives and the tendency to rehabilitate them by associating them with long-term success stories is explored as is the problematic of assessing radical thought in terms of ‘realism’ and that of viewing them through the prism of linguistic paradigms. Finding these approaches to evaluation wanting, it is suggested that a better basis of assessment might be through the essential function of delegitimation (of the status quo), legitimation of a preferred alternative and the devising of means of transformation from the one to the other. The chapter concludes by examining the implications of this approach.

The importance of the Norman Yoke, consequent upon the Norman Conquest, in the thinking of Gerrard Winstanley has been widely acknowledged, following Christopher Hill’s seminal essay on that subject. It was focal in the expropriation and exploitation of the labouring English, rendered landless by the Conquest. Winstanley’s strategies for overcoming the Yoke have commonly been seen as non violent. Chapter 4 argues that his thinking on violence both in the overthrow of the Conquest and in the achievement of a new social order and its defence was much more ambiguous than this would suggest.

A search for high-energy neutrinos was performed using data collected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory from May 2009 to May 2010, when the array was running in its 59-string configuration. The data sample was optimized to contain muon neutrino induced events with a background contamination of atmospheric muons of less than 1%. These data, which are dominated by atmospheric neutrinos, are analyzed with a global likelihood fit to search for possible contributions of prompt atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos, neither of which have yet been identified. Such signals are expected to follow a harder energy spectrum than conventional atmospheric neutrinos. In addition, the zenith angle distribution differs for astrophysical and atmospheric signals. A global fit of the reconstructed energies and directions of observed events is performed, including possible neutrino flux contributions for an astrophysical signal and atmospheric backgrounds as well as systematic uncertainties of the experiment and theoretical predictions. The best fit yields an astrophysical signal flux for $\nu_\mu + \bar\nu_\mu $ of $E^2 \cdot \Phi (E) = 0.25 \cdot 10^{-8} \textrm{GeV} \textrm{cm}^{-2} \textrm{s}^{-1} \textrm{sr}^{-1}$, and a zero prompt component. Although the sensitivity of this analysis for astrophysical neutrinos surpasses the Waxman and Bahcall upper bound, the experimental limit at 90% confidence level is a factor of 1.5 above at a flux of $E^2 \cdot \Phi (E) = 1.44 \cdot 10^{-8} \textrm{GeV} \textrm{cm}^{-2} \textrm{s}^{-1} \textrm{sr}^{-1}$., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a 1 km$^{3}$ detector currently taking data at the South Pole. One of the main strategies used to look for astrophysical neutrinos with IceCube is the search for a diffuse flux of high-energy neutrinos from unresolved sources. A hard energy spectrum of neutrinos from isotropically distributed astrophysical sources could manifest itself as a detectable signal that may be differentiated from the atmospheric neutrino background by spectral measurement. This analysis uses data from the IceCube detector collected in its half completed configuration which operated between April 2008 and May 2009 to search for a diffuse flux of astrophysical muon neutrinos. A total of 12,877 upward going candidate neutrino events have been selected for this analysis. No evidence for a diffuse flux of astrophysical muon neutrinos was found in the data set leading to a 90 percent C.L. upper limit on the normalization of an $E^{-2}$ astrophysical $\nu_{\mu}$ flux of $8.9 \times 10^{-9} \ \mathrm{GeV \ cm^{-2} \ s^{-1} \ sr^{-1}}$. The analysis is sensitive in the energy range between $35 \ \mathrm{TeV} - 7 \ \mathrm{PeV}$. The 12,877 candidate neutrino events are consistent with atmospheric muon neutrinos measured from 332 GeV to 84 TeV and no evidence for a prompt component to the atmospheric neutrino spectrum is found., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures

IceCube is a one-gigaton instrument located at the geographic South Pole, designed to detect cosmic neutrinos, identify the particle nature of dark matter, and study high-energy neutrinos themselves. Simulation of the IceCube detector and processing of data require a significant amount of computational resources. This paper presents the first detailed description of IceProd, a lightweight distributed management system designed to meet these requirements. It is driven by a central database in order to manage mass production of simulations and analysis of data produced by the IceCube detector. IceProd runs as a separate layer on top of other middleware and can take advantage of a variety of computing resources, including grids and batch systems such as CREAM, HTCondor, and PBS. This is accomplished by a set of dedicated daemons that process job submission in a coordinated fashion through the use of middleware plugins that serve to abstract the details of job submission and job management from the framework. EXO-200 is a single phase liquid xenon detector designed to search for neutrinoless ββ decay of ^(136)Xe to the ground state of ^(136)Ba. We report here on a search for the two-neutrino ββ decay of 136Xe to the first 0+ excited state, 0^+_1, of ^(136)Ba based on a 100 kg yr exposure of ^(136)Xe. Using a specialized analysis employing a machine learning algorithm, we obtain a 90% CL half-life sensitivity of 1.7 × 10^(24) yr. We find no statistically significant evidence for the 2νββ decay to the excited state resulting in a lower limit of T^(2ν)_(1/2)(0^+ → 0^+_1) > 6.9 ×10^(23) yr at 90% CL. This observed limit is consistent with the estimated half-life of 2.5 × 10^(25) yr.

Muons produced in atmospheric cosmic ray showers account for the by far dominant part of the event yield in large-volume underground particle detectors. The IceCube detector, with an instrumented volume of about a cubic kilometer, has the potential to conduct unique investigations on atmospheric muons by exploiting the large collection area and the possibility to track particles over a long distance. Through detailed reconstruction of energy deposition along the tracks, the characteristics of muon bundles can be quantified, and individual particles of exceptionally high energy identified. The data can then be used to constrain the cosmic ray primary flux and the contribution to atmospheric lepton fluxes from prompt decays of short-lived hadrons. In this paper, techniques for the extraction of physical measurements from atmospheric muon events are described and first results are presented. The multiplicity spectrum of TeV muons in cosmic ray air showers for primaries in the energy range from the knee to the ankle is derived and found to be consistent with recent results from surface detectors. The single muon energy spectrum is determined up to PeV energies and shows a clear indication for the emergence of a distinct spectral component from prompt decays of short-lived hadrons. The magnitude of the prompt flux, which should include a substantial contribution from light vector meson di-muon decays, is consistent with current theoretical predictions. The variety of measurements and high event statistics can also be exploited for the evaluation of systematic effects. In the course of this study, internal inconsistencies in the zenith angle distribution of events were found which indicate the presence of an unexplained effect outside the currently applied range of detector systematics. In earlier work, a time-dependent, ionization dynamic model of a cluster of xenon atoms was constructed [2] , [3] in an effort to determine conditions under which the X-ray line amplification data that was observed experimentally at wavelengths between 2.71 and 2.88 A [1] could be replicated. Model calculations showed that, at laser intensities greater than 1019 W/cm2, the outermost N-shell electrons of xenon would be stripped away by tunnel ionization in less than a femtosecond. They also showed that L-shell electrons within the resulting cluster of Ni-like ions could be photoionized at a sufficient rate as to generate population inversions between these hole states and the states they radiatively decayed into. These inversions only lasted for several femtoseconds, and they were generated early in time when the cluster was being rapidly heated and the cluster's density was rapidly evolving, but was still high. They were seen to depend on the heating and expansion dynamics of the cluster, which had not been modeled in detail in this early work. In this paper, molecular dynamics calculations are described in which the rapidly evolving temperatures and ion densities of an intensely laser-heated cluster are calculated for different peak laser intensities and for two different sized xenon nano-clusters. This data is then used as an input to the ionization dynamic calculations in order to determine the influence of cluster size and of peak laser intensity on the gain coefficient calculations. In these calculations, inner-shell photoionization rates are shaped by the temperature and density dependence of the bremsstrahlung emissions under the assumption that these emissions drive the photoionizations. This shaping produces calculated gain coefficients that agree well with the measured ones.

Experimental investigations of pinches on the refurbished Z (ZR) generator using Cu arrays have been initiated and more are planned for the near future. Significant X-ray emissions in the K-shell from moderately high atomic number plasmas such as Cu generate extreme interest. However, the production of these hard photons from high Z materials comes with a price. There is substantial loss of radiative yield due to stripping through many electrons present in high Z materials to reach to the H- or He-like ionization stages. Production of hard X-rays for materials with atomic number higher than Cu such as Kr is very difficult and theoretical predictions are even more uncertain. Previous experimental efforts using Cu as a plasma pinch load are encouraging and promote further investigations of this element on the refurbished Z machine for achieving photon energies higher than 5 keV and obtaining sufficient radiative yield. We will analyze the ionization dynamics and generate Cu spectrum using the temperature and density conditions obtained from 1-D non-LTE radiation hydrodynamics simulations of Cu wire array implosions on ZR. These results will be compared with K- and L-shell experimental spectrum of shot Z 1975. Theoretical K- and L-shell spectroscopy provides validation of atomic and plasma modeling when compared to available experimental data and also provides useful diagnostics for the plasma parameters. Our self-consistently generated non-LTE collisional-radiative model employs an extensive atomic level structure and data for all dominant atomic processes that are necessary to model accurately the pinch dynamics and the spectroscopic details of the emitted radiation.

The last several years have witnessed a surge of activity involving the interaction of clusters with intense ultrashort pulse lasers. The interest in laser–cluster interaction has not been only of academic interest, but also because of the wide variety of potential applications. Clusters can be used as a compact source of X-rays, incoherent as well as coherent, and of fast ions capable of driving a fusion reaction in deuterium plasmas. In one set of xenon cluster experiments, in particular, amplification of ∼2.8 A X-rays has been observed [ 28 ]. X-ray amplification in cluster media is a phenomenon of critical importance and may lead to applications such as EUV lithography, EUV and X-ray microscopy, X-ray tomography, and variety of applications in biology and material sciences. However, while amplification of ∼2.8 A X-rays has been documented in experiments, the mechanism for producing it remains to be fully understood. In this talk, a xenon model of laser–cluster interaction dynamics is presented to shed light on the processes responsible for amplification. The focus of this research is on the feasibility of creating population inversions and gain in some of the inner-shell hole state transitions within the M-shell of highly ionized xenon. The model couples a molecular dynamics (MD) treatment of the explosively-driven, non-Maxwellian cluster expansion to a comprehensive multiphoton-radiative ionization dynamic (ID) model including single- and double-hole state production within the Co- and Fe-like ionization stages of xenon. The hole-state dynamics is self-consistently coupled to a detailed valence-state collisional-radiative dynamics of the Ni-, Co-, and Fe-like ionization stages of xenon. In addition, the model includes tunneling ionization rates that confirm an initial condition assumption that Ni-like ground states can be created almost instantaneously, on the order of a femtosecond or less, i.e., at laser intensities larger than 1019 W/cm2, all of the N-shell, n = 4 electrons are striped from a xenon atom in less than a femtosecond. Because of the abundance of these ground states, large numbers of n = 2, inner-shell hole states and large population inversions can be created when the Ni-like ground states are photo- or collisionally ionized. Once the M-shell is entered, tunneling ionization slows down as does collisional ionization due to the fall in ion density as the cluster expands. Moreover, as the cluster density goes down, our combined MD and ID calculations show that so do the calculated population inversions. Thus, our calculations do not support the initial experimental data interpretations in which the measured gains have been associated with double holes in more highly ionized stages of xenon (Xe32+, Xe34+, Xe35+, and Xe37+), which our calculations suggest would require laser intensities in excess of 1.5 × 1020 W/cm2, for a 248 nm, ∼250 fs laser pulse focused in a gas of xenon clusters. At laser intensities used in the experiment, such ionization stages would be reached, but only later in time when cluster densities have fallen by several orders of magnitude from their initial values to values where pumping rates are too low and gains cannot be generated.

Using a novel SQUID-based torsional oscillator (TO) technique to achieve increased sensitivity and dynamic range, we studied TO’s containing solid 4He. Below ∼250 mK, the TO resonance frequency f increases and its dissipation D passes through a maximum as first reported by Kim and Chan. To achieve unbiased analysis of such 4He rotational dynamics, we implemented a new approach based upon the generalized rotational susceptibility $\chi_{{}^{4}\mathrm{He}}^{ - 1}(\omega,T)$ . Upon cooling, we found that equilibration times within f(T) and D(T) exhibit a complex synchronized ultraslow evolution toward equilibrium indicative of glassy freezing of crystal disorder conformations which strongly influence the rotational dynamics. We explored a more specific $\chi_{{}^{4}\mathrm{He}}^{ -1}(\omega,\tau(T))$ with τ(T) representing a relaxation rate for inertially active microscopic excitations. In such models, the characteristic temperature T ∗ at which df/dT and D pass simultaneously through a maximum occurs when the TO angular frequency ω and the relaxation rate are matched: ωτ(T ∗)=1. Then, by introducing the free inertial decay (FID) technique to solid 4He TO studies, we carried out a comprehensive map of f(T,V) and D(T,V) where V is the maximum TO rim velocity. These data indicated that the same microscopic excitations controlling the TO motions are generated independently by thermal and mechanical stimulation of the crystal. Moreover, a measure for their relaxation times τ(T,V) diverges smoothly everywhere without exhibiting a critical temperature or velocity, as expected in ωτ=1 models. Finally, following the observations of Day and Beamish, we showed that the combined temperature-velocity dependence of the TO response is indistinguishable from the combined temperature-strain dependence of the 4He shear modulus. Together, these observations imply that ultra-slow equilibration of crystal disorder conformations controls the rotational dynamics and, for any given disorder conformation, the anomalous rotational responses of solid 4He are associated with generation of the same microscopic excitations as those produced by direct shear strain.

We use spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy (SI-STM) to visualize the spatial symmetries of the electronic states that occur at the pseudogap energy scale in underdoped cuprates. We find evidence for the local intra-unit-cell electronic nematicity—by which we mean the disordered breaking of C4v symmetry within each CuO2 unit cell [1] . We also find that the coexisting incommensurate (smectic) electronic modulations couple to the intra-unit-cell nematicity through their 2 π topological defects [2] .

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) have been proposed as a leading candidate for acceleration of ultra high-energy cosmic rays, which would be accompanied by emission of TeV neutrinos produced in proton-photon interactions during acceleration in the GRB fireball. Two analyses using data from two years of the IceCube detector produced no evidence for this neutrino emission, placing strong constraints on models of neutrino and cosmic-ray production in these sources., 6 pages, 4 figures. Additional supplementary information (effective areas) is freely available with the published version. Version 2 supersedes the published version and fixes a small overestimation of the event rate from the Guetta et al. model in the 2010-2011 part of the model-dependent analysis, resulting in a new Fig. 1. Conclusions and all final results are unchanged.

Spatially and temporally resolved X-ray emission lines contain information about temperatures, densities, velocities, and the gradients in a plasma. Extracting this information from optically thick lines emitted from complex ions in dynamic, three-dimensional, non-LTE plasmas requires self-consistent accounting for both non-LTE atomic physics and non-local radiative transfer. We present a brief description of a hybrid-structure spectroscopic atomic model coupled to an iterative tabular on-the-spot treatment of radiative transfer that can be applied to plasmas of arbitrary material composition, conditions, and geometries. The effects of Doppler line shifts on the self-consistent radiative transfer within the plasma and the emergent emission and absorption spectra are included in the model. Sample calculations for a two-level atom in a uniform cylindrical plasma are given, showing reasonable agreement with more sophisticated transport models and illustrating the potential complexity – or richness – of radially resolved emission lines from an imploding cylindrical plasma. Also presented is a comparison of modeled L- and K-shell spectra to temporally and radially resolved emission data from a Cu:Ni plasma. Finally, some shortcomings of the model and possible paths for improvement are discussed.

Replacing a magnetic atom by a spinless atom in a heavy fermion compound generates a quantum state often referred to as a 'Kondo-hole'. No experimental imaging has been achieved of the atomic-scale electronic structure of a Kondo-hole, or of their destructive impact (Lawrence JM, et al. (1996) Kondo hole behavior in Ce0. 97La0. 03Pd3. Phys Rev B 53:12559-12562; Bauer ED, et al. (2011) Electronic inhomogeneity in a Kondo lattice. Proc Natl Acad Sci. 108:6857-6861) on the hybridization process between conduction and localized electrons which generates the heavy fermion state. Here we report visualization of the electronic structure at Kondo-holes created by substituting spinless Thorium atoms for magnetic Uranium atoms in the heavy-fermion system URu2Si2. At each Thorium atom, an electronic bound state is observed. Moreover, surrounding each Thorium atom we find the unusual modulations of hybridization strength recently predicted to occur at Kondo-holes (Figgins J, Morr DK (2011) Defects in heavy-fermion materials: unveiling strong correlations in real space. Phys Rev Lett 107:066401). Then, by introducing the 'hybridization gapmap' technique to heavy fermion studies, we discover intense nanoscale heterogeneity of hybridization due to a combination of the randomness of Kondo-hole sites and the long-range nature of the hybridization oscillations. We evaluated the in vitro and in vivo activity of a novel topical myeloperoxidase-mediated antimicrobial, E-101 solution, against 5 multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates recovered from wounded American soldiers. Time-kill studies demonstrated rapid bactericidal activity against all A. baumannii strains tested in the presence of 3% blood. The in vitro bactericidal activity of E-101 solution against A. baumannii strains was confirmed in a full-thickness excision rat model. Additional in vivo studies appear warranted.

The Z Accelerator has been used for many years as a research facility for high energy density plasmas, with applications ranging from astrophysics to inertial confinement fusion. The available current at the Z Accelerator (>15 MA) has also allowed for experiments over a wide range of K-shell X-ray sources, including Al (∼1.6 keV), Ar (∼3.1 keV), Ti (∼4.8 keV), stainless steel (SS, ∼6.7 keV), and Cu (∼8.4 keV). The K-shell sources provide excellent opportunities for studying the details of a z -pinch through radiated output in various photon energy regimes, imaging, and spectroscopy. Variations in initial load configurations illustrate the difficulty in achieving appropriate plasma conditions for K-shell emissions, particularly for stainless steel and Cu. The requirement for large diameter loads (>40 mm) enhances the growth of the magnetic Rayleigh–Taylor instability during the implosion; evidence of this instability is presented in stagnated pinch data. Data from a variety of K-shell sources and load configurations are presented and discussed to illustrate the details of the imploding and stagnated z pinches. The application of existing and modified scaling theories to the K-shell data is also described, as are multi-dimensional calculations that can be directly compared to the experimental observations. The recent refurbishment of the Z Accelerator will ultimately increase the coupled energy available to a load, with an anticipated peak current of ∼26 MA into a wire array. The current waveforms measured to date are presented, along with a brief discussion of the current status of K-shell work at the Z Accelerator.

Nematic Electronic Order in Iron Superconductors The properties of many high-temperature superconductors vary strongly as the composition of a doping element changes, and at sufficient under- or overdoping, other phases with different types of electronic ordering can form. Chuang et al. (p. 181 ; see the Perspective by Fradkin and Kivelson ) use scanning tunneling microscopy techniques to probe the electronic structure of an underdoped compound in the iron superconductor family, Ca(Fe 1− x Co x ) 2 As 2 . They observed periodic nanostructures oriented along Fe–Fe bonds that exhibit an electronic ordering related to ordering seen in nematic liquid crystals.

Mind the Pseudogap Below the transition temperature, an energy gap opens in superconductors, which effectively protects the superconducting phase. Above the transition temperature, the gap closes, creating excitations and a loss of superconductivity. In the high-temperature superconducting cuprates, however, the gap persists above the transition temperature. Understanding the electronic structure of this pseudogap region is important in understanding the mechanism of superconductivity in the cuprates. Lee et al. (p. 1099 ; see the Perspective by Norman ) use high-resolution, temperature-dependent scanning tunneling microscopy to reveal that the pseudogap regime is an incoherent (or phase-disordered) d-wave superconductor.

The spectral sensitivities of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), olive fly, Dacus oleae (Gmelin), and the cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis cerasi (L.) were determined, and the relative attractiveness of wing traps of 5 selected colors was tested under field conditions in 5 countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The spectral sensitivities of all 3 species were basically similar, with a broad major peak at 485–500 nm (yellow-green) and a secondary peak at 365 nm (ultraviolet). A distinct color preference was shown only by the cherry fruit fly, for which the yellow polypropylene (Rebell 78) trap was the most attractive of all colors tested. For the other species, however, no specific yellow color was significantly preferred. Zusammenfassung Die spektrale Sensitivitat und Attraktivitat visueller Stimuli bei der Mittelmeerfruchtfliege, Ceratitis capitata, der Olivenfliege, Dacus oleae, und der Kirschenfliege, Rhagoletis cerasi (Diptera: Tephritidae) Mittels elektrophysiologischer Methoden (Elektroretinogramm) wurde die spektrale Sensitivitat der Augen von drei Fruchtfliegenarten (Ceratitis capitata, Dacus oleae und Rhagoletis cerasi) im Rahmen einer gemeinsamen Untersuchung der OILB-Arbeitsgruppe Fruchtfliegen untersucht und durch ein Prufprogramm in 5 Landern der Mittelmeerregion erganzt, in welchem die Fangigkeit von Flugelfallen mit 5 ausgewahlten Gelbtonen im Feldversuch gepruft wurde. Die erstellten Kurven der spektralen Sensitivitat der Fruchtfliegenaugen sind bei allen drei untersuchten Arten ahnlich, weisen einen breiteren Hauptgipfel in der Region von 485–500 nm (gelb-grun) und einen Nebengipfel im Ultraviolettbereich (365 nm) auf. Eine ausgepragte Praferenz fur bestimmte Gelbtone wurde lediglich bei der Kirschenfliege festgestellt, welche am starksten durch den Gelbton der Kreuzfalle des Types Rebell 78 angezogen wurde. Die beiden anderen Fruchtfliegenarten bevorzugten keinen der 5 vorgelegten Gelbtone in signifikanter Weise. Die mogliche Ausnutzung der vorliegenden Ergebnisse im Prognosewesen und bei okologischen Untersuchungen wird diskutiert.

Superconducting excitations—Bogoliubov quasiparticles—are the quantum mechanical mixture of negatively charged electron (−e) and positively charged hole ( + e). Depending on the applied voltage bias in scanning tunneling microscope (STM) one can sample the particle and hole content of such a superconducting excitation. Recent STM experiments offer a unique insight into the inner workings of the superconducting state of superconductors. We propose a new observable quantity for STM studies that is the manifestation of the particle–hole dualism of the quasiparticles. We call it a Bogoliubov angle. This angle measures the relative weight of particle and hole amplitude in the superconducting (Bogoliubov) quasiparticle. We propose that this quantity can be measured locally by comparing the ratio of tunneling currents at positive and negative biases locally. This Bogoliubov angle allows one to measure directly the energy and position dependent particle–hole admixture and therefore visualize robustness of superconducting state locally. It may also allow one to measure the particle–hole admixture of excitations in normal state above critical temperature and thus may be used to measure superconducting correlations in pseudogap state.

SUMMARY A functional partial obstruction of the ureter can be produced experimentally by clamping the ureter for six hours with Dieffenbach forceps. During the period of clamping there is severe local damage to the ureter, and this gives rise to a permanent disturbance of the neuromuscular mechanism at the site. The obstruction is incomplete, and can be compensated to allow a normal flow of urine down the ureter. If the contralateral kidney is present, no hydronephrosis develops in the kidney whose ureter is obstructed. When, however, the contralateral kidney is removed and the whole burden of excretion is thrown on the kidney with the partially obstructed ureter, hydronephrosis develops, though not so rapidly as after permanent ligation of the ureter.

The antiferromagnetic ground state of copper oxide Mott insulators is achieved by localizing an electron at each copper atom in real space (r-space). Removing a small fraction of these electrons (hole doping) transforms this system into a superconducting fluid of delocalized Cooper pairs in momentum space (k-space). During this transformation, two distinctive classes of electronic excitations appear. At high energies, the enigmatic 'pseudogap' excitations are found, whereas, at lower energies, Bogoliubov quasi-particles -- the excitations resulting from the breaking of Cooper pairs -- should exist. To explore this transformation, and to identify the two excitation types, we have imaged the electronic structure of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d in r-space and k-space simultaneously. We find that although the low energy excitations are indeed Bogoliubov quasi-particles, they occupy only a restricted region of k-space that shrinks rapidly with diminishing hole density. Concomitantly, spectral weight is transferred to higher energy r-space states that lack the characteristics of excitations from delocalized Cooper pairs. Instead, these states break translational and rotational symmetries locally at the atomic scale in an energy independent fashion. We demonstrate that these unusual r-space excitations are, in fact, the pseudogap states. Thus, as the Mott insulating state is approached by decreasing the hole density, the delocalized Cooper pairs vanish from k-space, to be replaced by locally translational- and rotational-symmetry-breaking pseudogap states in r-space., Comment: This is author's version.
