Abstract: The Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) is a second-generation VLT panoramic integral-field spectrograph currently in manufacturing, assembly and integration phase. MUSE has a field of 1x1 arcmin2 sampled at 0.2x0.2 arcsec2 and is assisted by the VLT ground layer adaptive optics ESO facility using four laser guide stars. The instrument is a large assembly of 24 identical high performance integral field units, each one composed of an advanced image slicer, a spectrograph and a 4kx4k detector. 4. The Peculiar Nebula Simeis 57: II. Distance, Nature and Excitation

Abstract: Simeis 57 (HS 191) is an optically bright nebula in the Cygnus X region with a peculiar appearance that suggests an outflow from a rotating source. Newly obtained observations and archival data reveal Simeis 57 as a low-density (ne∼100cm−3) nebula with an east-to-west excitation gradient. The extinction of the nebula isAV≤2mag. The nebula is recognizable but not prominent in mid-and far-infrared images. In its direction, half a dozen small CO clouds have been identified at VLSR= +5km s−1. One of these coincides with both the optical nebula and a second CO cloud at the nebular velocity- VLSR≈ −10km−1. No luminous stars are embedded in these molecular clouds, nor are any obscured by them and no sufficiently luminous stars are found in the immediate vicinity of the nebula. Instead, all available data points to the evolved star HD 193793 = WR 140 (an O4-5 supergiant and WC7 Wolf–Rayet binary)as the source of excitation, notwithstanding its large separation of 50′, about 25 pc at the stellar distance of 1.7 kpc. Simeis 57 appears to be a part of a larger structure surrounding the HI void centered on HD 193793

Abstract: Cosmological constraints from key probes of the Euclid imaging survey rely critically on the accurate determination of the true redshift distributions, $n(z)$, of tomographic redshift bins. We determine whether the mean redshift, $$, of ten Euclid tomographic redshift bins can be calibrated to the Euclid target uncertainties of $\sigma()$ is measured in each tomographic redshift bin to an accuracy of order 0.01 or better. By measuring the clustering redshifts on subsets of the full Flagship area, we construct scaling relations that allow us to extrapolate the method performance to larger sky areas than are currently available in the mock. For the full expected Euclid, BOSS, and DESI overlap region of approximately 6000 deg$^{2}$, the uncertainties attainable by clustering redshifts exceeds the Euclid requirement by at least a factor of three for both $n(z)$ models considered, although systematic biases limit the accuracy. Clustering redshifts are an extremely effective method for redshift calibration for Euclid if the sources of systematic biases can be determined and removed, or calibrated-out with sufficiently realistic simulations. Abstract: The Euclid space telescope will survey a large dataset of cosmic voids traced by dense samples of galaxies. In this work we estimate its expected performance when exploiting angular photometric void clustering, galaxy weak lensing and their cross-correlation. To this aim, we implement a Fisher matrix approach tailored for voids from the Euclid photometric dataset and present the first forecasts on cosmological parameters that include the void-lensing correlation. We examine two different probe settings, pessimistic and optimistic, both for void clustering and galaxy lensing. We carry out forecast analyses in four model cosmologies, accounting for a varying total neutrino mass, $M_\nu$, and a dynamical dark energy (DE) equation of state, $w(z)$, described by the CPL parametrisation. We find that void clustering constraints on $h$ and $\Omega_b$ are competitive with galaxy lensing alone, while errors on $n_s$ decrease thanks to the orthogonality of the two probes in the 2D-projected parameter space. We also note that, as a whole, the inclusion of the void-lensing cross-correlation signal improves parameter constraints by $10-15\%$, and enhances the joint void clustering and galaxy lensing Figure of Merit (FoM) by $10\%$ and $25\%$, in the pessimistic and optimistic scenarios, respectively. Finally, when further combining with the spectroscopic galaxy clustering, assumed as an independent probe, we find that, in the most competitive case, the FoM increases by a factor of 4 with respect to the combination of weak lensing and spectroscopic galaxy clustering taken as independent probes. The forecasts presented in this work show that photometric void-clustering and its cross-correlation with galaxy lensing deserve to be exploited in the data analysis of the Euclid galaxy survey and promise to improve its constraining power, especially on $h$, $\Omega_b$, the neutrino mass, and the DE evolution., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures - published in A&A

Improving the photo-z quality is a major challenge but is needed to advance our understanding of cosmology. In this paper we explore how the synergies between narrow-band photometric data and large imaging surveys can be exploited to improve broadband photometric redshifts. We used a multi-task learning (MTL) network to improve broadband photo-z estimates by simultaneously predicting the broadband photo-z and the narrow-band photometry from the broadband photometry. The narrow-band photometry is only required in the training field, which also enables better photo-z predictions for the galaxies without narrow-band photometry in the wide field. This technique was tested with data from the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS) in the COSMOS field. We find that the method predicts photo-zs that are 13% more precise down to magnitude iAB < 23; the outlier rate is also 40% lower when compared to the baseline network. Furthermore, MTL reduces the photo-z bias for high-redshift galaxies, improving the redshift distributions for tomographic bins with z > 1. Applying this technique to deeper samples is crucial for future surveys such as Euclid or LSST. For simulated data, training on a sample with iAB < 23, the method reduces the photo-z scatter by 16% for all galaxies with iAB < 25. Abstract: Euclid Consortium: N. Hamaus et al., Euclid is poised to survey galaxies across a cosmological volume of unprecedented size, providing observations of more than a billion objects distributed over a third of the full sky. Approximately 20 million of these galaxies will have their spectroscopy available, allowing us to map the three-dimensional large-scale structure of the Universe in great detail. This paper investigates prospects for the detection of cosmic voids therein and the unique benefit they provide for cosmological studies. In particular, we study the imprints of dynamic (redshift-space) and geometric (Alcock–Paczynski) distortions of average void shapes and their constraining power on the growth of structure and cosmological distance ratios. To this end, we made use of the Flagship mock catalog, a state-of-the-art simulation of the data expected to be observed with Euclid. We arranged the data into four adjacent redshift bins, each of which contains about 11 000 voids and we estimated the stacked void-galaxy cross-correlation function in every bin. Fitting a linear-theory model to the data, we obtained constraints on f/b and DMH, where f is the linear growth rate of density fluctuations, b the galaxy bias, DM the comoving angular diameter distance, and H the Hubble rate. In addition, we marginalized over two nuisance parameters included in our model to account for unknown systematic effects in the analysis. With this approach, Euclid will be able to reach a relative precision of about 4% on measurements of f/b and 0.5% on DMH in each redshift bin. Better modeling or calibration of the nuisance parameters may further increase this precision to 1% and 0.4%, respectively. Our results show that the exploitation of cosmic voids in Euclid will provide competitive constraints on cosmology even as a stand-alone probe. Abstract: Pair-instability supernovae are theorized supernovae that have not yet been observationally confirmed. They are predicted to exist in low-metallicity environments. Because overall metallicity becomes lower at higher redshifts, deep near-infrared transient surveys probing high-redshift supernovae are suitable to discover pair-instability supernovae. The Euclid satellite, which is planned to be launched in 2023, has a near-infrared wide-field instrument that is suitable for a high-redshift supernova survey. The Euclid Deep Survey is planned to make regular observations of three Euclid Deep Fields (40 deg2 in total) spanning the Euclid's 6 year primary mission period. While the observations of the Euclid Deep Fields are not frequent, we show that the predicted long duration of pair-instability supernovae would allow us to search for high-redshift pair-instability supernovae with the Euclid Deep Survey. Based on the current observational plan of the Euclid mission, we conduct survey simulations in order to estimate the expected numbers of pair-instability supernova discoveries. We find that up to several hundred pair-instability supernovae at z < ~ 3.5 can be discovered within the Euclid Deep Survey. We also show that pair-instability supernova candidates can be efficiently identified by their duration and color that can be determined with the current Euclid Deep Survey plan. We conclude that the Euclid mission can lead to the first confirmation of pair-instability supernovae if their event rates are as high as those predicted by recent theoretical studies. Abstract: An accurate covariance matrix is essential for obtaining reliable cosmological results when using a Gaussian likelihood. In this paper we study the covariance of pseudo-$C_\ell$ estimates of tomographic cosmic shear power spectra. Using two existing publicly available codes in combination, we calculate the full covariance matrix, including mode-coupling contributions arising from both partial sky coverage and non-linear structure growth. For three different sky masks, we compare the theoretical covariance matrix to that estimated from publicly available N-body weak lensing simulations, finding good agreement. We find that as a more extreme sky cut is applied, a corresponding increase in both Gaussian off-diagonal covariance and non-Gaussian super-sample covariance is observed in both theory and simulations, in accordance with expectations. Studying the different contributions to the covariance in detail, we find that the Gaussian covariance dominates along the main diagonal and the closest off-diagonals, but further away from the main diagonal the super-sample covariance is dominant. Forming mock constraints in parameters describing matter clustering and dark energy, we find that neglecting non-Gaussian contributions to the covariance can lead to underestimating the true size of confidence regions by up to 70 per cent. The dominant non-Gaussian covariance component is the super-sample covariance, but neglecting the smaller connected non-Gaussian covariance can still lead to the underestimation of uncertainties by 10--20 per cent. A real cosmological analysis will require marginalisation over many nuisance parameters, which will decrease the relative importance of all cosmological contributions to the covariance, so these values should be taken as upper limits on the importance of each component., 15 pages, 8 figures; matches version accepted by A&A; code available at https://github.com/robinupham/shear_pcl_cov

Abstract: Jiménez-Muñoz, A., et al., The Euclid satellite, to be launched by ESA in 2022, will be a major instrument for cosmology for the next decades. Euclid is composed of two instruments: The Visible instrument and the Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP). In this work, we estimate the implications of correlated readout noise in the NISP detectors for the final in-flight flux measurements. Considering the multiple accumulated readout mode, for which the UTR (Up The Ramp) exposure frames are averaged in groups, we derive an analytical expression for the noise covariance matrix between groups in the presence of correlated noise. We also characterize the correlated readout noise properties in the NISP engineering-grade detectors using long dark integrations. For this purpose, we assume a (1/f ) α-like noise model and fit the model parameters to the data, obtaining typical values of s = - 19.7+0.8 1.1 e− Hz−0.5, = ( - ) f 5.2+ 10- Hz knee 1.3 1.8 3 and a = - 1.24+0.21 0.26. Furthermore, via realistic simulations and using a maximum likelihood flux estimator we derive the bias between the input flux and the recovered one. We find that using our analytical expression for the covariance matrix of the correlated readout noise we diminish this bias by up to a factor of four with respect to the white noise approximation for the covariance matrix. Finally, we conclude that the final bias on the in-flight NISP flux measurements should still be negligible even in the white readout noise approximation, which is taken as a baseline for the Euclid on-board processing to estimate the on-sky flux. Abstract: Weak lensing, which is the deflection of light by matter along the line of sight, has proven to be an efficient method for constraining models of structure formation and reveal the nature of dark energy. So far, most weak-lensing studies have focused on the shear field that can be measured directly from the ellipticity of background galaxies. However, within the context of forthcoming full-sky weak-lensing surveys such as Euclid, convergence maps (mass maps) offer an important advantage over shear fields in terms of cosmological exploitation. While it carry the same information, the lensing signal is more compressed in the convergence maps than in the shear field. This simplifies otherwise computationally expensive analyses, for instance, non-Gaussianity studies. However, the inversion of the non-local shear field requires accurate control of systematic effects caused by holes in the data field, field borders, shape noise, and the fact that the shear is not a direct observable (reduced shear). We present the two mass-inversion methods that are included in the official Euclid data-processing pipeline: the standard Kaiser & Squires method (KS), and a new mass-inversion method (KS+) that aims to reduce the information loss during the mass inversion. This new method is based on the KS method and includes corrections for mass-mapping systematic effects. The results of the KS+ method are compared to the original implementation of the KS method in its simplest form, using the Euclid Flagship mock galaxy catalogue. In particular, we estimate the quality of the reconstruction by comparing the two-point correlation functions and third- and fourth-order moments obtained from shear and convergence maps, and we analyse each systematic effect independently and simultaneously. We show that the KS+ method substantially reduces the errors on the two-point correlation function and moments compared to the KS method. In particular, we show that the errors introduced by the mass inversion on the two-point correlation of the convergence maps are reduced by a factor of about 5, while the errors on the third- and fourth-order moments are reduced by factors of about 2 and 10, respectively., The Euclid Consortium acknowledges the European Space Agency and the support of a number of agencies and institutes that have supported the development of Euclid. Abstract: Antarctica in general, and the Antarctic plateau in particular offers significant gains for astronomical observations as detailed in this book. Here the prospects for extra-galactic astronomy from Antarctica and in particular Dome C, in the relatively near future is critically examined. It is clear that Dome C will provide a very good site for certain types of observations, and reverberation mapping of Active Galactic Nuclei, observation of transient phenomena such as supernovae and gamma-ray bursts, and wide-field thermal IR imaging of VISTA fields are very interesting topics for a modest facility at Dome C. While it is clear that Dome C promises to offer significant gains for survey astronomy in the near- and thermal-IR and has the potential to be the premier site for wide field NIR And MIR imaging surveys from the ground, I highlight the obstacles both in form of technical challenges and sky coverage.

Abstract: We discuss the colors of 99,088 galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 1 "main" spectroscopic sample (a flux limited sample, rPet < 17.77, for 1360 deg 2 ) in the rest-frame Stromgren system (uz, vz, bz, yz). This narrow-band (�200 u photometric system, first designed for the determination of effective tem- perature, metallicity and gravity of stars, measures the continuum spectral slope of galaxies in the rest-frame 3200-5800 u wavelength range. We synthesize rest-frame Stromgren magnitudes from SDSS spectra, and find that galaxies form a remarkably narrow locus (�0.03 mag) in the resulting color-color diagram. Using the Bruzual & Charlot population synthesis models, we demonstrate that the position of a galaxy along this locus is controlled by metallicity and age of the dominant stellar popula- tion. The distribution of galaxies along the locus is bimodal, with the local minimum corresponding to an �1 Gyr old single stellar population. The position of a galaxy per- pendicular to the locus is independent of metallicity and age, and reflects the galaxy's dust content, as implied by both the models and the statistics of IRAS detections. Comparison of the galaxy locus in the rest-frame Stromgren color-color diagram with the galaxy locus in the H�-Dn(4000) diagram, utilized by Kauffmann et al. (2003) to estimate stellar masses, reveals a tight correlation, although the two analyzed spectral ranges barely overlap. Furthermore, the rest-frame r i color (5500-8500 u wavelength range) can be "predicted" with an rms of 0.05 mag using the rest-frame Stromgren colors. Overall, the galaxy spectral energy distribution in the entire UV to near-IR range can be described as a single-parameter family with an accuracy of 0.1 mag, or better. This nearly one-dimensional distribution of galaxies in the multi- dimensional space of measured parameters strongly supports the conclusion of Yip et al. (2004), based on a principal component analysis, that SDSS galaxy spectra can be described by a small number of eigenspectra. Furthermore, the rest-frame Stromgren colors correlate tightly with the classification scheme proposed by Yip et al. (2004) based on the first three eigenspectra. Apparently, the contributions of stellar popula- tions that dominate the optical emission from galaxies are combined in a simple and well-defined way. We also find a remarkably tight correlation between the rest-frame Stromgren colors of emission-line galaxies and their position in the Baldwin-Phillips- Terlevich diagram. These correlations between colors and various spectroscopic diag- nostic parameters support earlier suggestions that rest-frame Stromgren photometry offers an efficient tool to study faint cluster galaxies and lowsurface brightness objects without performing time-consuming spectral observations.

17. Star formation history and dust content of galaxies drawn from ultraviolet surveys

Abstract: We compile a new sample of 115 nearby, non-Seyfert galaxies spanning a wide range of star formation activities, from starburst to nearly dormant, based on ultraviolet (UV) observations with various satellites. We combine these observations with infrared (IR) observations to study the relation between ratio of total far-IR to UV luminosities and UV spectral slope (the `IRX-UV' relation). We show that, at fixed UV spectral slope, quiescent star-forming galaxies in our sample have systematically lower ratio of total far-IR to UV luminosities than starburst galaxies. The strengths of spectral indices sensitive to star formation history, such as the 4000 A break and EW(Ha), correlate well with distance from the mean relation for starburst galaxies in the IRX-UV diagram, while there is little or no correlation between the dust-sensitive Ha/Hb ratio and this distance. This is strong observational evidence that the star formation history is relevant to the `second parameter' affecting the IRX-UV relation. We show that these results can be understood in the framework of the simple model of Charlot & Fall 2000 for the transfer of starlight through the ISM in galaxies. We confirm that, for starburst galaxies, the tight IRX-UV relation can be understood most simply as a sequence in overall dust content. In addition, we find that the broadening of the relation for quiescent star-forming galaxies can be understood most simply as a sequence in the ratio of present to past-averaged star formation rates. We provide simple formulae for estimating the UV attenuation as a function of either the ratio of far-IR to UV luminosities or the UV spectral slope and show that the accuracy of these estimates can be improved if some constraints are available on the ratio of present to past-averaged star formation rates [abridged].

Abstract: Using the first-epoch data from the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), we investigate the evolution of the projected two-point correlation function of galaxies between z ∼ 1 and the present epoch. For the global galaxy population we do not find strong variations of clustering with redshift. However, dependence of clustering on intrinsic luminosities and stellar masses of galaxies evolves significantly during this period. We observe more close pairs for the most luminous and (less distinctly) most massive objects at z ∼ 1 as compared to what is seen locally, resulting in a non–power-law shape of their correlation function, with an upturn on small scales. This effect can be modeled within the framework of the halo occupation distribution models and leads to the conclusion that at z ∼ 1 we are possibly observing a population of luminous and not very massive satellite galaxies that occupy the most massive dark-matter halos—an effect that is not seen locally.

Abstract: The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey is enabling to trace from one single survey the star formation history in the Universe over 12 billion years of evolution. We find that the star formation rate is strongly linked to the different types of galaxies. While the Luminosity Density of irregular-like galaxies decreased by more than a factor 3.5 from z = 1.2 to z = 0.2, the LD for early-type galaxies increased by a factor 1.7. Star formation happened in several phases, strongly luminosity dependent, with star formation gradually shifting from the first massive galaxies to less massive systems. The peak in SFR at z = 3.5 is identified with the end of the mass assembly of the most luminous galaxies (M-AB(1500 angstrom) < -21). We use the SWIRE Spitzer-IRAC observations of the VVDS-02h field to assemble a flux-limited sample at 3.8 mu m of 1500 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts and more than 22000 galaxies with photometric redshifts up to z = 2 and build the rest-frame K-band luminosity function and stellar mass density. We find that the global stellar mass density has remained relatively constant since z similar to 1, but the epoch 1 < z < 2 has seen an increase of more than a factor 10 in the stellar mass density of red galaxies selected based on the bimodal distribution of (NUV-r) colors, while in the same period blue galaxies have seen only a modest factor 2 increase. We interpret this as the fast build-up of the red sequence of galaxies, essentially complete by z similar to 1.

Abstract: Taking advantage of the efficient VIMOS multi-slit spectrograph on the VLT, we are conducting the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), aimed to trace the evolution of galaxies and large-scale structures over more than 90% of the life of the Universe. The VVDS is made of three magnitude selected surveys: the wide survey at IAB = 22.5, the deep survey at IAB = 24, and the ultra-deep survey at IAB = 24.75. To date, the VVDS has assembled more than 45000 redshifts in the range 0 < z ≤ 5. A number of results have been obtained, including a comprehensive view of the luminosity and stellar mass evolution as a function of galaxy type over 0 < z ≤ 2, a detailed look at the evolution of the clustering of galaxies as a function of type and environment, and a complete census of the actively star-forming galaxy population for 1.5 < z ≤ 5. This paper focuses on current highlights and on-going work from the VVDS.

24. Empirical strong-line oxygen abundance calibrations from galaxies with electron temperature measurements

Abstract: We determine the gas-phase oxygen abundance for a sample of 695 galaxies and H II regions with reliable detections of [O III]4363, using the temperature-sensitive Te method. Our aims are to estimate the validity of empirical methods such as R23, R23-P, log([N II]/Halpha) (N2), log[([O III]/Hbeta)/([N II]/Halpha)] (O3N2), and log([S II]/Halpha) (S2), and especially to re-derive (or add) the calibrations of R23, N2, O3N2 and S2 indices for oxygen abundances on the basis of this large sample of galaxies with Te-based abundances. We select 531 star-forming galaxies from the SDSS-DR4, and 164 galaxies and H II regions from literature for such study. Their (O/H) abundances obtained from Te are within 7.1, 12 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. Abstract: The stromal compartment of mesenchymal tissues is thought to harbor stem cells that display extensive proliferative capacity and multilineage potential. However, despite their potential impact in the field of regenerative medicine, little is known about the biology of stromal stem cells prior to culture. After removing adipocytes and erythrocytes from collagenase digested human adipose tissue, we identified two cell populations using flow cytometry which shared expression of stem cell markers SH2 and CD34, but lacked the phenotypic characteristics of leukocytes (CD45−). However, they were found to be discernible based on CD31 expression, a marker for endothelial cells. Using CD31 conjugated magnetic beads, we separated these cells (CD45-CD31− and CD45-CD31+) from three patients and compared global gene expression profiles using an Affymetrix platform. The prominant feature of CD45-CD31+ cells was the up-regulation of genes associated with endothelial cells. By contrast, CD45-CD31− cells were found to overexpress transcripts involved in cell cycle quiescence and cell signaling elements including those of the WNT pathway thought to be important for maintaining the stem cell state. Upon culture in DMEM/F12 with 20% FCS, only CD45-CD31− cells were capable of adhering to plastic and forming colonies. These cells with fibroblastic morphology met the key criterion of stem cells, the ability to proliferate while retaining the capacity to differentiate into mature tissues. Under appropriate inductive conditions, they were found to exclusively form bone, cartilage, adipose and neuronal-like tissues in vitro. Clonal cell lines generated from individually cultured CD45-CD31− cells displayed multilineage and proliferative capacity, validating our conclusion that they are true stem cells and not simply committed progenitors. We then undertook extensive comparative profiling of CD45-CD31− cells with their cultured counterparts to examine changes that stromal stem cells undergo during culture. Except for the disappearance of CD34, flow cytometry analysis using 52 antibodies revealed little change in cell surface phenotype as a result of culture. However, comparative global gene profiling revealed extensive down-regulation of many genes during culture. These included cell cycle arresting genes, as expected, and genes encoding elements involved in cell signaling including those belonging to the tumor necrosis factor, interleukin, transforming growth factor and chemokine families. The consequences of these changes remain unknown, but ultimately may affect the potential use of adipose tissue stem cells in regenerative medicine.

Abstract: Next generation telescopes, like Euclid, Rubin/LSST, and Roman, will open new windows on the Universe, allowing us to infer physical properties for tens of millions of galaxies. Machine learning methods are increasingly becoming the most efficient tools to handle this enormous amount of data, because they are often faster and more accurate than traditional methods. We investigate how well redshifts, stellar masses, and star-formation rates (SFR) can be measured with deep learning algorithms for observed galaxies within data mimicking the Euclid and Rubin/LSST surveys. We find that Deep Learning Neural Networks and Convolutional Neutral Networks (CNN), which are dependent on the parameter space of the training sample, perform well in measuring the properties of these galaxies and have a better accuracy than methods based on spectral energy distribution fitting. CNNs allow the processing of multi-band magnitudes together with $H_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm E}$-band images. We find that the estimates of stellar masses improve with the use of an image, but those of redshift and SFR do not. Our best results are deriving i) the redshift within a normalised error of less than 0.15 for 99.9$\%$ of the galaxies with S/N>3 in the $H_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm E}$-band; ii) the stellar mass within a factor of two ($\sim0.3 \rm dex$) for 99.5$\%$ of the considered galaxies; iii) the SFR within a factor of two ($\sim0.3 \rm dex$) for $\sim$70$\%$ of the sample. Abstract: The Complete Calibration of the Color-Redshift Relation survey (C3R2) is a spectroscopic programme designed to empirically calibrate the galaxy color-redshift relation to the Euclid depth (I_E=24.5), a key ingredient for the success of Stage IV dark energy projects based on weak lensing cosmology. A spectroscopic calibration sample as representative as possible of the galaxies in the Euclid weak lensing sample is being collected, selecting galaxies from a self-organizing map (SOM) representation of the galaxy color space. Here, we present the results of a near-infrared H- and K-bands spectroscopic campaign carried out using the LUCI instruments at the LBT. Abstract: We present a method for fast evaluation of the covariance matrix for a two-point galaxy correlation function (2PCF) measured with the Landy-Szalay estimator. The standard way of evaluating the covariance matrix consists in running the estimator on a large number of mock catalogs, and evaluating their sample covariance. With large random catalog sizes (data-to-random objects ratio M>>1) the computational cost of the standard method is dominated by that of counting the data-random and random-random pairs, while the uncertainty of the estimate is dominated by that of data-data pairs. We present a method called Linear Construction (LC), where the covariance is estimated for small random catalogs of size M = 1 and M = 2, and the covariance for arbitrary M is constructed as a linear combination of these. We validate the method with PINOCCHIO simulations in range r = 20-200 Mpc/h, and show that the covariance estimate is unbiased. With M = 50 and with 2 Mpc/h bins, the theoretical speed-up of the method is a factor of 14. We discuss the impact on the precision matrix and parameter estimation, and derive a formula for the covariance of covariance., 17 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: We present a detailed analysis of the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function of galaxies up to z=2.5 as obtained from the VVDS. We estimate the stellar mass from broad-band photometry using 2 different assumptions on the galaxy star formation history and show that the addition of secondary bursts to a continuous star formation history produces systematically higher (up to 40%) stellar masses. At low redshift (z=0.2) we find a substantial population of low-mass galaxies (10^8 Msun at z=1), and a mild mass-dependent average evolution (`mass-downsizing'). In particular our data are consistent with mild/negligible (6x10^10 Msun). For less massive systems the no-evolution scenario is excluded. A large fraction (>=50%) of massive galaxies have been already assembled and converted most of their gas into stars at z=1, ruling out the `dry mergers' as the major mechanism of their assembly history below z=1. This fraction decreases to 33% at z=2. Low-mass systems have decreased continuously in number and mass density (by a factor up to 4) from the present age to z=2, consistently with a prolonged mass assembly also at z, 20 pages with 12 encapsulated figures. Abstract: We discuss the evolution of clustering of galaxies in the Universe from the present epoch back to z ~ 2, using the first-epoch data from the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS). We present the evolution of the projected two-point correlation function of galaxies for the global galaxy population, as well as its dependence on galaxy intrinsic luminosities and spectral types. While we do not find strong variations of the correlation function parameters with redshift for the global galaxy population, the clustering of objects with different intrinsic luminosities evolved significantly during last 8-10 billion years. Our findings indicate that bright galaxies in the past traced higher density peaks than they do now and that the shape of the correlation function of most luminous galaxies is different from observed for their local counterparts, which is a supporting evidence of a non-trivial evolution of the galaxy vs. dark matter bias., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the conference 'At the Edge of the Universe' (9-13 October 2006, Sintra, Portugal)

32. Bipolar outflows out to 10 kpc for massive galaxies at redshift z ≈ 1.

Abstract: Galactic outflows are believed to play a critical role in the evolution of galaxies by regulating their mass build-up and star formation 1 . Theoretical models assume bipolar shapes for the outflows that extend well into the circumgalactic medium (CGM), up to tens of kiloparsecs (kpc) perpendicular to the galaxies. They have been directly observed in the local Universe in several individual galaxies, for example, around the Milky Way and M82 (refs. 2,3 ). At higher redshifts, cosmological simulations of galaxy formation predict an increase in the frequency and efficiency of galactic outflows owing to the increasing star-formation activity 4 . Galactic outflows are usually of low gas density and low surface brightness and therefore difficult to observe in emission towards high redshifts. Here we present an ultra-deep Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) image of the mean Mg II emission surrounding a sample of galaxies at z ≈ 1 that strongly suggests the presence of outflowing gas on physical scales of more than 10 kpc. We find a strong dependence of the detected signal on the inclination of the central galaxy, with edge-on galaxies clearly showing enhanced Mg II emission along the minor axis, whereas face-on galaxies show much weaker and more isotropic emission. We interpret these findings as supporting the idea that outflows typically have a bipolar cone geometry perpendicular to the galactic disk. Abstract: Galaxies are surrounded by large reservoirs of gas, mostly hydrogen, that are fed by inflows from the intergalactic medium and by outflows from galactic winds. Absorption-line measurements along the lines of sight to bright and rare background quasars indicate that this circumgalactic medium extends far beyond the starlight seen in galaxies, but very little is known about its spatial distribution. The Lyman-α transition of atomic hydrogen at a wavelength of 121.6 nanometres is an important tracer of warm (about 10 4 kelvin) gas in and around galaxies, especially at cosmological redshifts greater than about 1.6 at which the spectral line becomes observable from the ground. Tracing cosmic hydrogen through its Lyman-α emission has been a long-standing goal of observational astrophysics 1-3 , but the extremely low surface brightness of the spatially extended emission is a formidable obstacle. A new window into circumgalactic environments was recently opened by the discovery of ubiquitous extended Lyman-α emission from hydrogen around high-redshift galaxies 4,5 . Such measurements were previously limited to especially favourable systems 6-8 or to the use of massive statistical averaging 9,10 because of the faintness of this emission. Here we report observations of low-surface-brightness Lyman-α emission surrounding faint galaxies at redshifts between 3 and 6. We find that the projected sky coverage approaches 100 per cent. The corresponding rate of incidence (the mean number of Lyman-α emitters penetrated by any arbitrary line of sight) is well above unity and similar to the incidence rate of high-column-density absorbers frequently detected in the spectra of distant quasars 11-14 . This similarity suggests that most circumgalactic atomic hydrogen at these redshifts has now been detected in emission.

Abstract: In this study, we present an innovative strategy to reinforce 3D-printed hydrogel constructs for cartilage tissue engineering by formulating composite bioinks containing alginate and short sub-micron polylactide (PLA) fibers. We demonstrate that Young's modulus obtained for pristine alginate constructs (6.9 ± 1.7 kPa) can be increased threefold (up to 25.1 ± 3.8 kPa) with the addition of PLA short fibers. Furthermore, to assess the performance of such materials in cartilage tissue engineering, we loaded the bioinks with human chondrocytes and cultured in vitro the bioprinted constructs for up to 14 days. Live/dead assays at day 0, 3, 7 and 14 of in vitro culture showed that human chondrocytes were retained and highly viable (∼80%) within the 3D deposited hydrogel filaments, thus confirming that the fabricated composites materials represent a valid solution for tissue engineering applications. Finally, we show that the embedded chondrocytes during all the in vitro culture maintain a round morphology, a key parameter for a proper deposition of neocartilage extracellular matrix.

Abstract: Background: Focal lesions to the articular cartilage in the knee might have demolishing consequences to the knee. There exists a wide range of possible surgical procedures targeting these injuries, however no significant differences have been found between these procedures. This may support that the improvement is a result of rehabilitation, and not the surgery itself. Arthroscopic microfracture (MF) treatment has gained popularity, and has become the treatment of choice in patients with knee cartilage defects globally. In this study we want to increase knowledge, both clinical and economic, about arthroscopic microfracture (AF) compared to arthroscopic debridement (AD) and physical rehabilitation both in the short run, and in the long run., Methods/design: To compare arthroscopic microfracture with arthroscopic debridement and physiotherapy for the treatment of focal cartilage lesions in the knee, a long-term, double-blinded, randomized controlled multicenter trial will be conducted. A total of 114 men and non-pregnant women with a symptomatic focal full thickness cartilage lesion in the knee less than 2 cm2 will be included in the study. The two treatment allocations will receive identical rehabilitation, which is made up of 3 phases: accommodation, rehabilitation and return to activity. Follow up is 24 months, where all will be invited to participate in late follow ups after 5 and 10 years. The Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) knee-related quality of life (QoL) subscore is the primary endpoint. Clinical parameters, questionnaires and radiologic modalities (Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and x-ray) will be used as secondary endpoints., Discussion: This is an ongoing multicenter study with a high level of evidence to compare arthroscopic microfracture with arthroscopic debridement and physiotherapy for the treatment of isolated symptomatic full thickness cartilage lesions in the knee joint., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT02637505 (December 15, 2015).

Abstract: Background: Focal cartilage injuries in the knee might have devastating effect due to the predisposition of early onset osteoarthritis. Various surgical treatment options are available, however no statistically significant differences have been found between the different surgical treatments. This supports the suggestion that the improvement might be a result of the post-operative rehabilitation rather than the surgery itself. Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) has become a recognized treatment option for larger cartilage lesions in the knee. Although ACI has been compared to other surgical treatment such as microfracture and mosaicplasty, it has never been directly compared to simple arthroscopic debridement and rehabilitation alone. In this study we want to increase clinical and economic knowledge about autologous chondrocyte implantation compared to arthroscopic debridement and physical rehabilitation in the short and long run., Methods/design: We will conduct a randomized controlled trial to compare ACI with simple arthroscopic debridement (AD) and physiotherapy for the treatment of cartilage lesions in the knee. The study will include a total of 82 patients, both men and non-pregnant women, with a full thickness cartilage defect in the weight bearing area of the femoral condyles or trochlea larger than 2 cm2. The lesion must be symptomatic, with a Lysholm score less than 75. The two treatment groups will receive identical rehabilitation protocol according to a modification of Wondrasch et al., which is an active rehabilitation and education program divided into 3 phases: accommodation, rehabilitation and return to activity. The patients will be followed for 24 months, with additional late follow-ups at 5 and 10 years to monitor the potential onset of osteoarthtitis. The primary outcome measure will be the difference in the KOOS knee-related quality of life (QoL) subscore in the ACI group compared to the AD group at 2 years. A combination of self-explanatory questionnaires, clinical parameters, clinical hop tests and radiographs and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) will be used as secondary endpoints., Discussion: This is the first study with a high level of evidence to compare ACI with simple debridement and physiotherapy for the treatment of isolated symptomatic full thickness lesions of the knee., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrial NCT02636881 (21 December 2015).

38. The resolved history of galaxy evolution.

Abstract: We briefly review the study of the evolution of galaxies from an observational point of view, with particular emphasis on the role of the Hubble Space Telescope in probing the evolution of the different morphological types of galaxy. We show how using the stellar mass of galaxies as a tracer of evolution can improve our understanding of the physical process taking place before turning our eyes towards the future and giving an overview of what we can expect from future advances in technology.
