Nitrogen dioxide is both a primary pollutant with direct health effects and a key precursor of the secondary pollutant ozone. This paper reports on the development, characterisation and test flight of the Atmospheric Nitrogen Dioxide Imager (ANDI) remote sensing system. The ANDI system includes an imaging UV/Vis grating spectrometer able to capture scattered sunlight spectra for the determination of tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations by way of DOAS slant column density and vertical column density measurements. Results are shown for an ANDI test flight over Leicester City in the UK on a cloud-free winter day in February 2013. Retrieved NO2 columns gridded to a surface resolution of 80 m × 20 m revealed hotspots in a series of locations around Leicester City, including road junctions, the train station, major car parks, areas of heavy industry, a nearby airport (East Midlands) and a power station (Ratcliffe-on-Soar). In the city centre the dominant source of NO2 emissions was identified as road traffic, contributing to a background concentration as well as producing localised hotspots. Quantitative analysis revealed a significant urban increment over the city centre which increased throughout the flight.

The international experimental campaign Hygroscopic Aerosols to Cloud Droplets (HygrA-CD), organized in the Greater Athens Area (GAA), Greece from 15 May to 22 June 2014 provided an unprecedented record of data on aerosols, clouds and meteorology. HygrA-CD brought together different active/passive remote sensing and in situ instrumentation/teams for the purpose of fostering our understanding on the physico-chemical properties of aerosols and their impact on the cloud formation in the lower troposphere, with emphasis on the top of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL). The use of well-established numerical weather prediction and atmospheric modeling, such as the Flexible particle (FLEXPART) dispersion model and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model enabled us to simulate air mass back-trajectories and atmospheric variables in the PBL, such as PBL height (PBLH), relative humidity, wind fields etc. This paper presents the major findings and highlights of the HygrA-CD campaign.

We found that under continental (W-NW-N) and Etesian (NE) synoptic wind flow and with a deep moist PBL (~2-2.5km height), mixed hygroscopic (anthropogenic, biomass burning and marine) particles arrive over the GAA, and contribute to the formation of convective non-precipitating PBL clouds (of ~16-20μm mean diameter) with vertical extent up to 500m. In this point of view article, we wish to look at another aspect of these twin revolutions, namely, how to enable developers, designers and researchers to build intuitive,multimodal, user-centric, scientific applications that can aid and enable scientific research.

β-(Pyridyl-4′)-propionaldehyde-diethylacetal (II) is obtained in a yield of 39% by the action of bromoacetal on γ-picolyllithium (I). By allowing I to react with acetyl bromide or with ethyl acetate, a 34% yield of (pyridyl-4′)-propanone (III) is obtained. By the action of carbon dioxide on I, (pyridyl-4′)-acetic acid is prepared, which is isolated as the ethyl ester (IV) (yield 34%).

If phenyllithium in an ethereal solution is slowly added to an ethereal solution of the equivalent amount of 4-methylpyridine, and an equivalent amount of an alkyl bromide is subsequently allowed to act on it, a 4-alkylpyridine is formed as the main product of the reaction. In this way we prepared the 4-n-alkylpyridines, in which the alkyl group contains 3-10 carbon atoms. The yields amount to at least 60% of the theory, calculated on lithium. By the action of phenyllithium on 4-ethylpyridine, followed by the action of n-butyl bromide, we obtained a 30% yield of the 4-(hexyl-2′)-pyridine or 2-(pyridyl-4′)-hexane.

In this paper, multi-wavelength Raman lidar measurements are used to investigate the capability of ceilometers to provide reliable information about atmospheric aerosol properties through the INTERACT (INTERcomparison of Aerosol and Cloud Tracking) campaign carried out at the CNR-IMAA Atmospheric Observatory (760 m a.s.l., 40.60 N, 15.72 E), in the framework of ACTRIS (Aerosol Clouds Trace gases Research InfraStructure) FP7 project. This work is the first time that three different commercial ceilometers with an advanced Raman lidar are compared over a period of six month. The comparison of the attenuated backscatter coefficient profiles from a multi-wavelength Raman lidar and three ceilometers (CHM15k, CS135s, CT25K) reveals differences due to the expected discrepancy in the SNR but also due to effect of changes in the ambient temperature on the stability of ceilometer calibration over short and mid-term. Technological improvements of ceilometers towards their operational use in the monitoring of the atmospheric aerosol in the low and free troposphere are likely needed.

Although unconfirmed, the syndrome idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), commonly seen in overweight 20- to 50-year-old women, has been proposed to have its origins in an endocrine-based disturbance of electrolytes. Herein we report on 2 women with IIH and primary aldosteronism (PAL). Aged 57 and 55 (patients 1 and 2), each had a longstanding history of mild-to-moderate arterial hypertension, recurrent hypokalemia, and headaches. They were found to have IIH at ages 51 and 45. PAL was diagnosed at ages 57 and 35, respectively, due to proven left adrenal adenoma in patient 1; and presumptive adrenal nodular hyperplasia in patient 2. This is the first report to appear in the English medical literature that describes an association between IIH and PAL. It raises the prospect that in some cases of IIH associated with arterial hypertension, an autonomous production of aldosterone should be considered.

Despite their differences from more advanced and more powerful lidars, the low construction and operation cost of ceilometers, originally designed for cloud base height monitoring, has fostered their use for the quantitative study of aerosol properties. The large number of ceilometers available worldwide represents a strong motivation to investigate both the extent to which they can be used to fill in the geographical gaps between advanced lidar stations and also how their continuous data flow can be linked to existing networks of the more advanced lidars, like EARLINET (European Aerosol Research LIdar NETwork). A large instability of ceilometers in the incomplete overlap region has also been observed, making the use of a single overlap correction function for the whole duration of the campaign critical. Therefore, technological improvements of ceilometers towards their operational use in the monitoring of the atmospheric aerosol in the low and free troposphere are needed.

The study of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) remains one of the most challenging topics in elementary particle physics. The lattice formulation of QCD, in which space–time is treated as a four-dimensional hypercubic grid of points, provides the means for a numerical solution from first principles but makes extreme demands upon computational performance. High Performance Computing (HPC) offers us the tantalising prospect of a verification of QCD through the precise reproduction of the known masses of the strongly interacting particles. It is also leading to the development of a phenomenological tool capable of disentangling strong interaction effects from weak interaction effects in the decays of one kind of quark into another, crucial for determining parameters of the Standard Model of particle physics. The 1980s saw the first attempts to apply parallel architecture computers to lattice QCD. The SIMD and MIMD machines used in these pioneering efforts were the ICL DAP and the Cosmic Cube, respectively. These were followed by the Connection Machine, the Meiko i860 Computing Surface and the Intel Hypercube. The end of the decade witnessed a rise in the development of special purpose dedicated parallel systems, notably the APE machines in Rome, the Columbia machines, the GF-11 system at IBM Research and the QCDPAX project in Tsukuba. The state-of-the-art is represented by the CP–PACS machine at Tsukuba, and QCDSP, the latest Columbia machine. We give a brief pedagogic review of lattice QCD, outline the computational methodology used and discuss the sources of systematic error that arise in numerical calculations. We outline some of the early calculations and discuss parallel architectures and their application to QCD, giving examples of both commercial and special purpose machines. After a short section on recent developments, we describe state-of-the-art machines and conclude with the prospects for the future.
