Der Artikel nähert sich der Hölle von Theresienstadt über die historische Realität des Lagers als Teil der nationalsozialistischen Vernichtungspolitik. Hierfür vermittelt er Einblicke aus dem «Vorhof der Hölle» wie er von Überlebenden in Interviews während einer Feldforschung in den Jahren 2017 und 2018 erinnert wurde. Vor diesem Hintergrund rekonstruieren und interpretieren wir die Realität des Ortes, wie sie vom nationalsozialistischen Propagandafilm «Theresienstadt. Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem jüdischen Siedlungsgebiet» inszeniert wird. Anhand der Analyse ausgewählter Filmsequenzen entwickeln wir die These, dass der Propagandafilm eine spezifische Art und Weise der Repräsentation der politischen Ideologie des Nationalsozialimus darstellt.

We devise a THz polaritonic saturable absorber exploiting ultra-strong coupled intersubband cavity polaritons generated in a multi quantum well (MQW) heterostructure. By coupling the polaritonic saturable absorber reflector with a high bandwidth heterogeneous THz QCL frequency comb (2.3-3.8 THz) we demonstrate spectral reshaping of the QCL emission and a major increase of the comb operational dynamic range up to 38% characterized by a stable single and narrow intermode beatnote.

The article approaches the hell of Theresienstadt by starting with reflections on its historical reality as a special camp and as part of the Nazi policy of extermination. It then gives some insights into authentic experiences of the “forecourt of hell”, as remembered by survivors of the Holocaust and expressed in the interviews conducted during field research in the years 2017 and 2018. Set against this background, we finally reconstruct and interpret the reality of the place as it is presented in the Nazi propaganda film Theresienstadt: Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem judischen Siedlungsgebiet (Terezin: A Documentary Film from the Jewish Settlement Area). Based on an analysis of selected parts of the film, we develop the thesis that the Theresienstadt film represents a very distinct means of presenting Nazi political ideology through a propaganda tool. This is because the film stages a “hall of mirrors” that distorts the hell of ghetto life into a paradise, in order to expose this “heaven on earth” as nothing but an optical illusion and a phantasm. The more-or-less hidden main message of the “documentary film” is that skilled and well-informed observers of this Jewish fake paradise will be able to decode the mirror writing and discover the ongoing downfall of humanity, and thereby finally become aware of an existential threat that transmits and reveals its own verdict of annihilation.

Der Beitrag befasst sich mit der sozialen Uberformung und den moralischen Impragnierungen des Riechens. Er entwickelt die These, dass gerade die fur das Spektrum der Sinnesausstattung wie auch hinsichtlich der Kooperation der Sinne stets beklagte Reduktion und Marginalisierung des Geruchssinns die eigentliche Bedingung seines Beitrags zur vorreflexiven Ordnung der gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit bildet. Weil jeder Sinn einen gegenstandlichen Grund in jener ‚Welt’ hat, den nur er herausbringt, hebt die Analyse auf den Eigensinn des Geruchssinns ab. Hierfur uberschreitet sie die ‚klassische’ Frage nach der olfaktorischen Konstruktion von gesellschaftlicher Wirklichkeit in Richtung einer Protosoziologie des Geruchs.

„Dass Menschen ihr Verhalten sozial binden, sozial verbindlich machen, ist eine hochst merkwurdige Leistung“ konstatiert Heinrich Popitz, bevor er sich fragt: „Wie bringen wir diese Leistung eigentlich zustande?“.

Die Neue Wissenssoziologie verhalt sich kritisch gegenuber wissenschaftlicher Schulbildung. Sie propagiert kein verbindliches Dogma, sondern prasentiert sich als streitbare Diskursgemeinschaft, die der Idee der gesellschaftlichen Konstruktion der Wirklichkeit immer wieder neue Auslegungen abgewinnt. So steht Thomas Luckmann in der streng einer wissenschaftlichen Analytik verpflichteten phanomenologischen Tradition seit Edmund Husserl und Alfred Schutz, wahrend Hans-Georg Soeffner eine strikt hermeneutische Soziologie vertritt. Luckmanns Verstandnis von Gesellschaft ist von Arnold Gehlens auf den Begriff der Autoritat gegrundeten Institutionalismus gepragt, was sich methodologisch-methodisch in seiner kommunikationstheoretischen Gattungsanalyse niederschlagt. Soeffners liberale Deutung des Theorems der gesellschaftlichen Konstruktion mit Hilfe Hellmuth Plessners Theorie der exzentrischen Positionalitat macht dagegen Ernst mit Max Webers einer am subjektiv gemeinten Sinn der Handelnden orientierten Soziologie auf der Grundlage einer hermeneutischen Fallrekonstruktionsmethodologie. Der Beitrag untersucht das Potential einer sich aus beiden Grundorientierungen speisenden „Konstanzer Schule“.

Over the past decade, the performance of generation and detection schemes for short electromagnetic waveforms in the THz spectral range has been improved at a rapid pace and facilitated the exploration of novel quantum phenomena of solid-state systems. Here, we present a selection of recent key advances and discuss their impact on cutting-edge fundamental research. Widely tunable high-field sources providing atomically strong, phase-locked few-cycle lightwaves with field amplitudes of up to 1 V/A at few-kHz repetition rates have driven dynamical Bloch oscillations in bulk semiconductors, quasiparticle collisions, and control of the valley pseudo-spin in monolayer dichalchogenides. Novel, highly phase-stable sources operating at repetition rates of 190 kHz provide comparably strong fields of up to 13 MV/cm, foreshadowing future applications in ultrabroadband frequency-comb metrology or lightwave scanning tunneling microscopy. Similarly, electro-optic sensors have been pushed to the quantum level, detecting THz waveforms which contain only 0.1 photons, on average, enabling strongly subdiffractional and subcycle tomography of interface polaritons black phosphorus in THz near-field scattering experiments. Moreover, customized FPGA technology has enabled synchronous single-shot detection of incoherent THz electric fields with amplitudes of less than 0.5 V/cm. In combination with femtosecond fiber lasers and an acousto-optical delay line, we have implemented fast-scan THz time-domain spectroscopy with a waveform refresh rate of 36 kHz and a bandwidth of 3 THz. The acquisition time of only 28 µs and signal-to-noise ratio of 27 for a single waveform, or 1.7×10^5/√Hz, may power multidimensional spectroscopy or real-time monitoring of non-repeatable processes in technology or biology.

Der Beitrag richtet sein das Interesse auf moralische Kollektive, die ‚gute‘ und ‚bose‘ Bilder als kommunikative Referenzen nehmen, um sich zu formieren. In den Fokus des sozialwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisinteresses rucken damit jene kommunikativen Verstandigungs- und Aushandlungsprozesse uber gemeinsam akzeptierte oder zuruckzuweisende Bildurteile und uber intersubjektiv geteilte oder zu verurteilende Bildpraktiken, uber die sich ein moralisches Kollektiv konstituiert. Insbesondere bei Bildern der Gewalt, die gesellschaftliche Verbreitung und Aufmerksamkeit finden und angesichts derer auch in den Sozialwissenschaften immer wieder moralische Stimmen laut werden, die nicht selten vorgeben, selbstevident und allgemeingultig zu sein, gilt es die fur diese Haltungen konstitutiven Wahrnehmungs- und Deutungsbedingungen wissenssoziologisch in den Blick zu nehmen. Zu welchen konkreten Anlassen sich moralische Kollektive sozial konsolidieren und wann, wo, durch wen und vor allem wie sich moralische Kollektive in gesellschaftlichen Diskursen mit ihren Bildethiken positionieren, gehort zu den aktuellsten Fragen und dringendsten Aufgaben einer (Wissens-)Soziologie der Moral und wird ausgehend vom Fallbeispiel einer ‚Ikone‘ der sogenannten Fluchtlingskrise des Jahres 2015 exemplarisch untersucht.

We demonstrate ultrabroadband electro-optic detection of multi-THz transients using mechanically exfoliated flakes of gallium selenide of a thickness of less than 10 mu m, contacted to a diamond substrate by van-der-Waals bonding. While the low crystal thickness allows for extremely broadband phase matching, the excellent optical contact with the index-matched substrate suppresses multiple optical reflections. The high quality of our structure makes our scheme suitable for the undistorted and artifact-free observation of electromagnetic waveforms covering the entire THz spectral range up to the near-infrared regime without the need for correction for the electro-optic response function. With the current revolution of chemically inert quasi-two-dimensional layered materials, we anticipate that exfoliated vander-Waals materials on index-matched substrates will open new flexible ways of ultrabroadband electro-optic detection at unprecedented frequencies. We demonstrate a compact source of energetic and phase-locked multi-terahertz pulses at a repetition rate of 190 kHz. Difference frequency mixing of the fundamental output of an Yb:KGW amplifier with the idler of an optical parametric amplifier in GaSe and LiGaS2 crystals yields a passively phase-locked train of waveforms tunable between 12 and 42 THz. The shortest multi-terahertz pulses contain 1.8 oscillation cycles within the intensity FWHM. Pulse energies of up to 0.16 {\mu}J and peak electric fields of 13 MV/cm are achieved. Electro-optic sampling reveals a phase stability better than 0.1 $\pi$ over multiple hours combined with free CEP tunability. Der Beitrag entwirft die Grundzuge zu einer Visuellen Wissenssoziologie der Fotografie. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet die Diskussion der erkenntnistheoretischen Ansatze und methodischen Zugange zur Fotografie bei Roland Barthes und Pierre Bourdieu einerseits sowie eine Auseinandersetzung mit den fur die empirische visuelle Soziologie bedeutenden bildtheoretischen und bildanalytischen Konzeptionen der Kunsthistoriker Erwin Panofsky und Max Imdahl. Hierauf aufbauend wird die fur die Wissenssoziologie im Allgemeinen und fur die visuelle Wissenssoziologie der Fotografie im Besonderen auserst bedeutsame, bislang allerdings allenfalls implizit berucksichtigte Rahmen-Metapher Erving Goffmans fur die sozialwissenschaftliche Analysearbeit zwischen Einzelbild, Bildkontext und Sozialmilieu aufgeschlossen. Ein der aktuellen medialen Alltagskommunikation entnommenes Fallbeispiel dient der Veranschaulichung und empirischen Erprobung der methodologischen und methodischen Uberlegungen.

Intersubband (ISB) transitions in semiconductor multi-quantum well (MQW) structures are promising candidates for the development of saturable absorbers at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, we exploit amplitude and phase-resolved two-dimensional (2D) THz spectroscopy on the sub-cycle time scale to observe directly the saturation dynamics and coherent control of ISB transitions in a metal-insulator MQW structure. Clear signatures of incoherent pump-probe and coherent four-wave mixing signals are recorded as a function of the peak electric field of the single-cycle THz pulses. All nonlinear signals reach a pronounced maximum for a THz electric field amplitude of 11 kV/cm and decrease for higher fields. We demonstrate that this behavior is a fingerprint of THz-driven carrier-wave Rabi flopping. A numerical solution of the Maxwell-Bloch equations reproduces our experimental findings quantitatively and traces the trajectory of the Bloch vector. This microscopic model allows us to design tailored MQW structures with optimized dynamical properties for saturable absorbers that could be used in future compact semiconductor-based single-cycle THz sources.
