Search

With the construction of the European Spallation Source, a remarkable opportunity has emerged to conduct high sensitivity searches for neutron oscillations, including a first search for thirty years for free neutrons converting to antineutrons. Furthermore, searches can be made for transitions of neutrons and antineutrons to sterile neutron states. Upgrades to the ESS infrastructure allow an improved HIBEAM design that would provide an increase in sensitivity by an order of magnitude compared to previous work. The HIBEAM program focuses on processes that violate baryon number by one or two units. The observation of a process satisfying one of the Sakharov conditions addresses the open question of the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. Sterile neutron states would belong to a `dark' sector of particles which may explain dark matter. As electrically neutral, meta-stable objects that can be copiously produced and studied, neutrons represent an attractive portal to a `dark' sector. The HIBEAM instrument can also be utilised for other purposes such as direct searches for ultralight axion dark matter. This paper describes the capability, design, infrastructure, and potential of the HIBEAM program. Most bacteriophages are known to inject their double-stranded DNA into bacteria upon receptor binding in an essentially spontaneous way. This downhill thermodynamic process from the intact virion toward the empty viral capsid plus released DNA is made possible by the energy stored during active packaging of the genome into the capsid. Only indirect measurements of this energy have been available until now using either single-molecule or osmotic suppression techniques. In this paper, we describe for the first time the use of isothermal titration calorimetry to directly measure the heat released (or equivalently the enthalpy) during DNA ejection from phage lambda, triggered in solution by a solubilized receptor. Quantitative analyses of the results lead to the identification of thermodynamic determinants associated with DNA ejection. The values obtained were found to be consistent with those previously predicted by analytical models and numerical simulations. Monte Carlo simulations and variational calculations using a Gaussian ansatz are applied to a model consisting of a flexible linear polyelectrolyte chain as well as to an intrinsically stiff chain with up to 1000 charged monomers. Addition of salt is treated implicitly through a screened Coulomb potential for the electrostatic interactions. For the flexible model the electrostatic persistence length shows roughly three regimes in its dependence on the Debye-H\"{u}ckel screening length, $\kappa^{-1}$.As long as the salt content is low and $\kappa^{-1}$ is longer than the end-to-end distance, the electrostatic persistence length varies only slowly with $\kappa^{-1}$. Decreasing the screening length, a controversial region is entered. We find that the electrostatic persistence length scales as $sqrt{\xi_p}/\kappa$, in agreement with experiment on flexible polyelectrolytes, where $\xi_p$ is a strength parameter measuring the electrostatic interactions within the polyelectrolyte. For screening lengths much shorter than the bond length, the $\kappa^{-1}$ dependence becomes quadratic in the variational calculation. The simulations suffer from numerical problems in this regime, but seem to give a relationship half-way between linear and quadratic. A low temperature expansion only reproduces the first regime and a high temperature expansion, which treats the electrostatic interactions as a perturbation to a Gaussian chain, gives a quadratic dependence on the Debye length. For a sufficiently stiff chain, the persistence length varies quadratically with $\kappa^{-1}$ in agreement with earlier theories., Comment: 20 pages LaTeX, 9 postscript figures

A variational approach, based on a discrete representation of the chain, is used to calculate free energy and conformational properties in polyelectrolytes. The true bond and Coulomb potentials are approximated by a trial isotropic harmonic energy containing force constants between {\em all}monomer-pairs as variational parameters. By a judicious choice of representation and the use of incremental matrix inversion, an efficient and fast-convergent iterative algorithm is constructed, that optimizes the free energy. The computational demand scales as $N^3$ rather than $N^4$ as expected in a more naive approach. The method has the additional advantage that in contrast to Monte Carlo calculations the entropy is easily computed. An analysis of the high and low temperature limits is given. Also, the variational formulation is shown to respect the appropriate virial identities.The accuracy of the approximations introduced are tested against Monte Carlo simulations for problem sizes ranging from $N=20$ to 1024. Very good accuracy is obtained for chains with unscreened Coulomb interactions. The addition of salt is described through a screened Coulomb interaction, for which the accuracy in a certain parameter range turns out to be inferior to the unscreened case. The reason is that the harmonic variational Ansatz becomes less efficient with shorter range interactions. As a by-product a very efficient Monte Carlo algorithm was developed for comparisons, providing high statistics data for very large sizes -- 2048 monomers. The Monte Carlo results are also used to examine scaling properties, based on low-$T$ approximations to end-end and monomer-monomer separations. Variational methods are used to calculate structural and thermodynamical properties of a titrating polyelectrolyte in a discrete representation. The Coulomb interactions are emulated by harmonic repulsive forces, the force constants being used as variational parameters to minimize the free energy. For the titrating charges, a mean field approach is used. The accuracy is tested against Monte Carlo data for up to 1000 monomers. For an unscreened chain, excellent agreement is obtained for the end-to-end distance and the apparent dissociation constant. With screening, the thermodynamical properties are invariably well described, although the structural agreement deteriorates. A very simple rigid-rod approximation is also considered, giving surprisingly good results for certain properties., Comment: 22 pages, PostScript, 9 figures
