The fish fauna of French Guiana is among the best known of South America. Various fieldwork campaigns have been conducted since the publication of the "Atlas des poissons d'eau douce" de Guyane, particularly in poorly surveyed areas, leading to the discovery of new taxa, and numerous scientific publications have provided new insights concerning this fauna. An updated checklist of the fishes of French Guiana, including all of this new information, is therefore desirable. The list contains 416 species, 367 of which are strictly freshwater. Fish diversity is strongly correlated with catchment size and is, on average, higher in French Guiana than in Suriname. The largest groups are the Characiformes (41%), Siluriformes (33%) and Perciformes (13%). The relative abundance of taxonomic groups differs between catchments, probably reflecting the ecological character of the rivers. Eighty seven species, around a quarter of the ichthyofauna, are listed as endemic, but this may be an underestimate because a rather strict definition of endemism is used. The rate of endemism is strongly correlated with catchment size, with some families showing higher than average rates. Comparison of the number of species shared by the different catchments suggests a highly complex pattern of dispersal as a function of the catchment size, topography, and species. The Oyapock River seems to belong to a relatively distinct biogeographic zone influenced by the Amazon basin, but it is not possible to show a broader trend. These results provide an additional tool for environmental managers and decision makers.

Helminths from the intestinal tracts of fish called "pacus" were studied. The fish were found only in rapids areas of Northeastern tributaries of the Amazon River. Since this species, Mylesinus paraschomburgkii JÉGU, SANTOS & FERREIRA, 1989, does not migrate, each river has a separate population in its upper reaches. These populations are believed to have been isolated from each other, by high water, since the last glaciation some 12,000 years ago. It was thought that differences in the helminth faunas might reflect such isolation. Collection sites were: the Uatumà, Pitinga and Capucapu Rivers, Amazonas State (considered one population), the Trombetas and Jari Rivers, Pará State and the Araguari River, Amapá State. Seven species of trematodes were found, namely: Alphamphistoma canoefomta gen. et sp. nov. which has a body that is extremely concave ventrally and short ceca; Betamphistoma jariense gen. et sp. nov. which has parallel testes and a cirrus sac with heavy muscular walls, Gammamphistoma collaris gen. et sp. nov. a small species with large suckers and an anterior collar; Deltamphistoma pitingaense gen. et sp. nov. a form with short to moderately long ceca and testes that extend laterally beyond them; Zetamphistoma compacta gen. et sp. nov. with a wide body that is convex on both surfaces and thin marginally; Pseudocladorchis cyclindricus (DIESING, 1836) with a large cylindrical body. parallel testes and vitelline follicles that extend anteriorly to beyond them and the Haploporidae, Saccocoelioides rotundus sp. nov. which has a compact body, rounded posteriorly and vitellaria that nearly surround the testis. P. cylindricus was found at all sites except the Jari River. The latter has also been repotted from other hosts. From three to four species of trematodes were found in each host population and some of these appear to be useful as markers. D. pitingaense was found only in the Amazonas State population and B. jariense appeared only in fish from the Jari River. The haploporid, S. rotundus was found in the Trombetas River population exclusively. The most typical trematode from Araguari River hosts was Z. compacta but this species was also found in fìsh from the Trombetas River. Two nematode species representing the family Atractidae, namely: Proatractis sp. and Rondonia rondoni TRAVASSOS, 1919, were found in all the fish examined. The former inhabits the pyloric ceca and the fìrst three or four centimeters of upper intestinal tract whereas R. rondoni completely packs the rest of the gut. Another nematode, Cucullanus sp. (Cucullanidae), was found in numbers from 1-24 in the upper intestinal tracts of hosts from the Trombetas River only.

Ichthyofauna survey were carried out in the Paredâo Island region of the Mucajaí River, where possibly, in the future, a hydroelectric dam will be built. A total of 126 fish species, belonging to 28 families were captured, at two collecting sites, one below and other above the Paredão 2 falls. Although these two stations were separated by a 20 meter waterfall, the similarity between the communities was high. Shannon's diversity index, evenness and catch per unit effort (CPUE) were rather high, comparing to other Amazonian rivers. The high value of equitability (0.82) suggests that fish communities are in equilibrium. In terms of biomass, the predator species were dominant and in number of specimens the detritivores were more abundant. It is expected that the construction of a dam would affect the equilibrium of the fish communities in this area, by lowering the number of fish species and changing the composition of the fish communities.

Germline mutations BRCA12 are responsible in women for breast and ovarian cancers that commonly occur at a young age: as such, there are strong interactions between the oncological risks and the events of reproductive life, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and management of infertility.A review of the international literature from the PubMed database was conducted, and recommendations of French health agencies were exposed. Published studies are case-control and cohort studies in the majority, with a low level of evidence.Pregnancy and lactation have no effect on breast and ovaries or even decreases the risk. The sex ratio among patients carrying the mutation is in favor of girls. It is not observed more infertility in patients carrying a mutation despite a strong suspicion of premature ovarian failure, and infertility treatments do not increase breast and ovarian risk. There are ethical debates concerning the place of pre-natal diagnosis: both experts and concerned patients recommend a case-by-case analysis of the requests.

Eser, Sultan (Balikesir Author), Background In 2015, the second cycle of the CONCORD programme established global surveillance of cancer survival as a metric of the effectiveness of health systems and to inform global policy on cancer control. CONCORD-3 updates the worldwide surveillance of cancer survival to 2014. Methods CONCORD-3 includes individual records for 37.5 million patients diagnosed with cancer during the 15-year period 2000-14. Data were provided by 322 population-based cancer registries in 71 countries and territories, 47 of which provided data with 100% population coverage. The study includes 18 cancers or groups of cancers: oesophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, lung, breast (women), cervix, ovary, prostate, and melanoma of the skin in adults, and brain tumours, leukaemias, and lymphomas in both adults and children. Standardised quality control procedures were applied; errors were rectified by the registry concerned. We estimated 5-year net survival. Estimates were age-standardised with the International Cancer Survival Standard weights.Findings For most cancers, 5-year net survival remains among the highest in the world in the USA and Canada, in Australia and New Zealand, and in Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. For many cancers, Denmark is closing the survival gap with the other Nordic countries. Survival trends are generally increasing, even for some of the more lethal cancers: in some countries, survival has increased by up to 5% for cancers of the liver, pancreas, and lung. For women diagnosed during 2010-14, 5-year survival for breast cancer is now 89.5% in Australia and 90.2% in the USA, but international differences remain very wide, with levels as low as 66.1% in India. For gastrointestinal cancers, the highest levels of 5-year survival are seen in southeast Asia: in South Korea for cancers of the stomach (68.9%), colon (71.8%), and rectum (71.1%); in Japan for oesophageal cancer (36.0%); and in Taiwan for liver cancer (27.9%). By contrast, in the same world region, survival is generally lower than elsewhere for melanoma of the skin (59.9% in South Korea, 52.1% in Taiwan, and 49.6% in China), and for both lymphoid malignancies (52.5%, 50.5%, and 38.3%) and myeloid malignancies (45.9%, 33.4%, and 24.8%). For children diagnosed during 2010-14, 5-year survival for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia ranged from 49.8% in Ecuador to 95.2% in Finland. 5-year survival from brain tumours in children is higher than for adults but the global range is very wide (from 28.9% in Brazil to nearly 80% in Sweden and Denmark). Interpretation The CONCORD programme enables timely comparisons of the overall effectiveness of health systems in providing care for 18 cancers that collectively represent 75% of all cancers diagnosed worldwide every year. It contributes to the evidence base for global policy on cancer control. Since 2017, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has used findings from the CONCORD programme as the official benchmark of cancer survival, among their indicators of the quality of health care in 48 countries worldwide. Governments must recognise population-based cancer registries as key policy tools that can be used to evaluate both the impact of cancer prevention strategies and the effectiveness of health systems for all patients diagnosed with cancer., American Cancer Society Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Swiss Re Swiss Cancer Research foundation Swiss Cancer League Institut National du Cancer La Ligue Contre le Cancer Rossy Family Foundation US National Cancer Institute Susan G Komen Foundation

- Abstract
A new species of Myloplus Gill is described from Eastern Tumucumaque Mountain Range, drainages of the Oyapock and Araguari rivers between Brazil and French Guiana. The new species is diagnosed by having comparatively large scales on the flanks, resulting in lower counts when compared with congeners, i.e., 59 to 70 total perforated scales on lateral line, 31 to 35 longitudinal scales above lateral line, 24 to 29 longitudinal scales below lateral line, and 22 to 26 circumpeduncular scale rows. The new species most closely resembles Myloplus rubripinnis by sharing with this species a general rounded shape, a similar color pattern, and a high number of rays, i.e., 23 to 25 branched dorsal-fin rays and 35 to 38 branched anal-fin rays in the new species (vs. 24 to 25 and 32 to 40, respectively, in M. rubripinnis). After reviewing the available type-specimens of all Myloplus species, M. rubripinnis is re-diagnosed as having higher counts of branched dorsal-fin rays and anal-fin rays combined to tiny scales on flanks, i.e., 85 to 89 total perforated scales on lateral line, 38 to 45 longitudinal scales above lateral line, 33 to 42 longitudinal scales below lateral line, and 30 to 39 circumpeduncular scale rows.

- Abstract
A new large serrasalmid species of Tometes is described from the Tocantins-Araguaia River Basin. Tometes siderocarajensis sp. nov. is currently found in the rapids of the Itacaiúnas River Basin, and formerly inhabited the lower Tocantins River. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners, except from T. ancylorhynchus, by the presence of lateral space between 1st and 2nd premaxillary teeth, and by the absence of lateral cusps in these two teeth. However, T. siderocarajensis sp. nov. can be differentiated from syntopic congener T. ancylorhynchus by an entirely black with mottled red body in live specimens, densely pigmented pelvic fins with a high concentration of dark chromatophores, and the presence of 39 to 41 rows of circumpeduncular scales (vs. silvery body coloration with slightly reddish overtones on middle flank during breeding period in live specimens, hyaline to slightly pale coloration on distalmost region of pelvic fins, and 30 to 36 rows of circumpeduncular scales). Additionally, molecular sequence shows that T. siderocarajensis sp. nov. is reciprocally monophyletic, and diagnosable from all congeners by having two autapomorphic molecular characters in the mitochondrial gene COI. The phylogenetic reconstruction still show that T. siderocarajensis sp. nov. is closely related to T. trilobatus. This is the first molecular study using an integrative taxonomic approach based on morphological and molecular sequence data for all described species of Tometes. These findings increase the number of formally described species of Tometes to seven. A key to the Tometes species is provided.

- Abstract
Myloplus lucienae, new species, is described from the blackwater tributaries of the rio Negro basin. It is one of the few Myloplus species typically found in rapid areas of the Guiana Shield. It is diagnosed from congeners by the combination of an elongated body, small prepelvic spines that reach anteriorly just to the middle of the abdomen between verticals through pectoral- and pelvic-fin origin, and large scales on flanks resulting in smaller scale counts.

- Abstract
The monotypic species Ossubtus xinguense was originally described based on scarce material putatively divided into juveniles and adults. Ossubtus xinguense has a restricted distribution and was previously known only from a few rapids downstream of the city of Altamira, in the Volta Grande stretch of the Middle Xingu River. Until recently, the species was rare in museums because its habitat (large rapids) is difficult to sample. Large-scale collecting efforts targeting rapids throughout the Xingu River basin have yielded an abundance of new material. Based on an analysis of the type series and freshly preserved specimens, we redescribe O. xinguense and provide detailed osteological descriptions along with comments about its relationships within Serrasalmidae. Furthermore, we expand the geographical distribution of the species and discuss its conservation status., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

- Abstract
Myloplus zorroi sp. n. is described from the Rio Madeira Basin in Amazonia. The new species had been treated as an undescribed Tometes species because of the absence of a marked abdominal keel and few small spines forming its prepelvic serrae, features commonly found in the species of the Myleus clade of the Serrasalmidae (species of genera Myleus, Mylesinus, Ossubtus and Tometes) and also in species of Utiaritichthys. Myloplus zorroi sp. n. shares the following characters with its congeners and Utiaritichthys: molariform teeth (versus incisiform teeth in Myleus clade members); a labial row of premaxillary teeth separated from lingual row by an internal gap (versus absence of internal gap between premaxillary teeth rows); and an ascending process of premaxilla wide from its base to the tip (versus ascending process tapering from its base to the tip). Like other Myloplus species, Myloplus zorroi sp. n. differs from Utiariticthys by having a deeper body, approximately 60% of standard length (versus usually less than 50% of standard length). Considering all the morphological evidence, including the presence of 13-19 low spines forming the prepelvic serrae in Myloplus zorroi sp. n. versus more than 20 high spines forming a marked prepelvic keel in other species of Mylopus, the new species is here assigned to Myloplus. Comparisons of the new species with nominal species of Myloplus, representatives of the Myleus clade, and other related taxa are provided.

- Abstract
Introduction: Germline mutations BRCA1&2 are responsible in women for breast and ovarian cancers that commonly occur at a young age: as such, there are strong interactions between the oncological risks and the events of reproductive life, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and management of infertility., Materials and Methods: A review of the international literature from the PubMed database was conducted, and recommendations of French health agencies were exposed. Published studies are case-control and cohort studies in the majority, with a low level of evidence., Results: Pregnancy and lactation have no effect on breast and ovaries or even decreases the risk. The sex ratio among patients carrying the mutation is in favor of girls. It is not observed more infertility in patients carrying a mutation despite a strong suspicion of premature ovarian failure, and infertility treatments do not increase breast and ovarian risk. There are ethical debates concerning the place of pre-natal diagnosis: both experts and concerned patients recommend a case-by-case analysis of the requests., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. - Abstract
The patterns and rates of nucleotide substitution in mitochondrial ribosomal RNA genes are described and applied in a phylogenetic analysis of fishes of the subfamily Serrasalminae (Teleostei, Characiformes, Characidae). Fragments of 345 bp of the 12S and 535 bp of the 16S genes were sequenced for 37 taxa representing all but three genera in the subfamily. Secondary-structure models based on comparative sequence analysis were derived to characterize the pattern of change among paired and unpaired nucleotides, forming stem and loop regions, respectively. Base compositional biases were in the direction of A-rich loops and G-rich stems. Ninety-five percent of substitutions in stem regions were compensatory mutations, suggesting that selection for maintenance of base pairing is strong and that independence among characters cannot be assumed in phylogenetic analyses of stem characters. The relative rate of nucleotide substitution was similar in both fragments sequenced but higher in loop than in stem regions. In both genes, C-T transitions were the most common type of change, and overall transitions outnumbered transversions by a factor of two in 16S and four in 12S. Phylogenetic analysis of the mitochondrial DNA sequences suggests that a clade formed by the genera Piaractus, Colossoma, and Mylossoma is the sister group to all other serrasalmins and that the genera Myleus, Serrasalmus, and Pristobrycon are paraphyletic. A previous hypothesis concerning relationships for the serrasalmins, based on morphological evidence, is not supported by the molecular data. However, phylogenetic analysis of host-specific helminth parasites and cytogenetic data support the phylogeny of the Serrasalminae obtained in this study and provide evidence for coevolution between helminth parasites and their fish hosts.
