Potato plants (Solanum tuberosum cv. Bintje) were grown in open top chambers under ambient (400 microL L(-1)) and elevated CO2 (720 microL L(-1)). After 50 days one half of each group was transferred to the other CO2 concentration and the effects were studied in relation to leaf age (old, middle-aged and young leaves) in each of the four groups. Under long-term exposure to elevated CO2, photosynthesis increased between 10% and 40% compared to ambient CO2. A subsequent shift of the same plants to ambient CO2 caused a 20-40% decline in photosynthetic rate, which was most pronounced in young leaves. After shifting from long-term ambient to elevated CO2, photosynthesis also increased most strongly in young leaves (90%); these experiments show that photosynthesis was downregulated in the upper young fully expanded leaves of potato growing long-term under elevated CO2. Soluble sugar content in all leaf classes under long-term exposure was stable irrespective of the CO2 treatment, however under elevated CO2 young leaves showed a strongly increased starch accumulation (up to 400%). In all leaf classes starch levels dropped in response to the shift from 720 to 400 microL L(-1) approaching ambient CO2 levels. After the shift to 720 microL L(-1), sucrose and starch levels increased, principally in young Leaves. There is clear evidence that leaves of different age vary in their responses to changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Present critical levels for ozone (O3) for protecting vegetation against adverse effects are based on exposure-response relationships mainly derived from open-top chamber experiments and are expressed as an Accumulated exposure Over a Threshold of 40 ppb (AOT40). In that context with a revision of the UN (United Nations)-ECE (Economic Commission for Europe) Gothenburg protocol, AOT40 values should be replaced by flux-oriented quantities, i.e. in the end by critical loads. At present, the database for the derivation of critical loads for O3 is extremely inadequate. Furthermore, the currently available flux-response relationships are also derived from open-top chamber experiments. The use of a relationship for spring wheat in a risk assessment for an agricultural site in Hesse, Germany, demonstrates in principle, the applicability of the critical load concept for O3. Comparisons of diurnal variation of stomatal uptake and AOT40 showed that a major part of toxicologically effective stomatal uptake occurred before noon whereas the AOT40 values were dominated by the O3 concentrations during afternoon. In other words, the AOT40 exposure index do not adequately address the O3 burden during hours when plants are sensitive to O3 uptake. However, due to the differences in radiation, air temperature and humidity between the chamber and the ambient microclimates, a derivation of flux-response relationships from chamber experiments is likely to be questionable, especially for species rich ecosystems: Here, without any changes in the pollution climate, significant modifications of species composition as well as an earlier beginning of the growing season has been previously observed. To overcome the problems associated with chamber-derived flux-response relationships, a new experimental and modelling concept, was developed. The approach, briefly described in this paper, combines methods in air pollution toxicology and micrometeorology. As an analogy to the free-air fumigation concept, O3 is released into the air by an injection system above the plant canopy. The assessment of dispersion and surface deposition of O3 released is based on Lagrangian trajectory modelling. Depending on wind direction and velocity, atmospheric stratification and surface roughness, without any disturbance of the microclimate and micrometeorology, several sub-areas can be identified around the source position with differing deposition rates above the ambient level. Taking into account the actual O3 background deposition, deposition rates and vegetation responses observed in these sub-areas can easily be used to derive flux-effect relationships under ambient conditions and more realistic limiting values to protect our environment.

The current European critical levels for ozone (O3) to protect crops, natural and semi-natural vegetation and forest trees are based on a relative small number of open-top chamber experiments with a very limited number of plant species. Therefore, the working group "Effects of Ozone on Plants" of the Commission on Air Pollution Prevention of the Association of German Engineers and the German Institute of Standardization reanalysed the literature on O3 effects on European plant species published between 1989 and 1999. An exposure-response relationship for wild plant species and agricultural crops could be derived from 30 experiments with more than 30 species and 90 data points; the relationship for conifer and deciduous trees is based on 20 experiments with nine species and 50 data points. From these relationships maximum O3 concentrations for different risk stages are deduced, below which the vegetation type is protected on the basis of the respective criteria. Because it is assumed that the fumigation concentrations reflect the O3 concentrations at the top of the canopy, i.e. the upper surface boundary of the quasi-laminar layer if the micrometeorological big-leaf approach is applied, the application of these maximum O3 concentrations requires the transformation of O3 concentrations measured at a reference height above the canopy to the effective phytotoxic concentrations at the top of the canopy. Thus, the approach described in this paper is a synthesis of the classical concept of toxicology of air pollutants (critical concentrations) and the more toxicological relevant dose concept.

Methane oxidation fluxes were monitored with the closed chamber method in eight treatment plots on a semi-wet grassland site near Giessen, Germany. The management regimes differed in the amount of nitrogen (NH4NO3) fertilizer applied and in the height of the in-ground water table. No inhibition of CH4 oxidation occurred, regardless of the amount of annual N fertilizer applied. Instead, the mean CH4 consumption rates were correlated with the mean soil moisture of the plots. However, the correlation between daily soil water content and corresponding CH4 oxidation rate was always weak. During drought period (late summer) water stress was observed to restrict CH4 oxidation rates. The findings led to the question whether methane production with soil depth might modify the CH4 fluxes measured at the surface. Therefore, two new methods were applied: (1) soil air sampling with silicone probes; and (2) anaerobic incubations of soil cores to test for the methane production potential of the grassland soil. The probe measurements revealed that the CH4 sink capacity of a specific site was related to the vertical length of its CH4 oxidizing column, i.e. the depth of the CH4 producing horizon. Anaerobically incubated soil cores produced large amounts of CH4 comparable with tropical rice paddy soil. Under field conditions, heavy autumnal rain in 1998 led to a dramatic increase of soil CH4 concentrations upto 51 microliters l-1 at a depth of 5 cm. Nevertheless, no CH4 was released when soil surface CH4 fluxes were measured simultaneously. The results thus demonstrate the high CH4 oxidation potential of the thin aerobic topsoil horizon in a non-aquatic ecosystem.

The European critical levels (CLs) to protect vegetation are expressed as an accumulative exposure over a threshold of 40 ppb (nl l(-1)). In view of the fact that these chamber-derived CLs are based on ozone (O(3)) concentrations at the top of the canopy the correct application to ambient conditions presupposes the application of Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere-Transfer (SVAT) models for quantifying trace gas exchange between phytosphere and atmosphere. Especially in the context of establishing control strategies based on flux-oriented dose-response relationships, O(3) flux measurements and O(3) exchange simulations are needed for representative ecosystems. During the last decades several micrometeorological methods for quantifying energy and trace gas exchange were developed, as well as models for the simulation of the exchange of trace gases between phytosphere and atmosphere near the ground. This paper is a synthesis of observational and modeling techniques which discusses measurement methods, assumptions, and limitations and current modeling approaches. Because stomatal resistance for trace gas exchange is parameterized as a function of water vapor or carbon dioxide (CO(2)) exchange, the most important micrometeorological techniques especially for quantifying O(3), water vapor and CO(2) flux densities are discussed. A comparison of simulated and measured O(3) flux densities shows good agreement in the mean.

Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance of a digital large-area silicon flat-panel detector with that of a conventional screen-film system in clinical chest imaging using abnormal findings documented by CT as the reference standard., Subjects and Methods: Eighty patients (46 men and 34 women; age range,18-91 years; mean age, 63 years) who underwent CT of the chest were examined with the new digital radiography system, which is based on a 43 x 43 cm silicon flat-panel detector, and with a conventional screen-film system, which is used routinely in clinical practice. Posteroanterior and lateral radiographs were obtained. Four radiologists analyzed the digital and conventional images separately for chest abnormalities and rated the images using a five-level scale of confidence; CT was used as the reference standard. Diagnostic value was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curves for each abnormality., Results: No significant differences were found between the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the digital and that of the conventional radiography method for almost all investigated criteria. The only exception was mediastinal abnormalities, for which the digital method provided better results than the conventional method (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The diagnostic performance of the new large-area silicon flat-panel detector is equivalent or superior to that of the conventional screen-film system for clinical chest imaging and can replace conventional radiography systems. This new technology offers transmission and storage possibilities inherent to digital radiology that would facilitate daily practice and reduce the initial high costs in the long-term.

Of the so-called criteria air pollutants, ozone (O3) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are relevant to agriculture due to their known toxic (O3, SO2) and fertilizing (SO2) potentials. A proper entity to describe pollutant doses in dose-response relationships is the cumulative flux density absorbed by the respective receptor systems. For nutrient budgets the whole ecosystem acts as receptor; for toxicological considerations, stomatal uptake has to be considered primarily. In Central Europe, the atmospheric inputs of oxidized S (SO2, SO3(2-) and SO4(2-)) have declined from the past, and at present are generally below the nutrient requirements of agroecosystems. In contrast, the phytotoxic potential of O3 has increased during the last decade. Pollutant absorbed doses and weighted concentrations were used to describe the risk potential. It could be shown that these two differ significantly.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between load-carrying on the head and the development of degenerative change in the cervical spine., Design and Subjects: A case-control study was performed with 35 individuals who had carried loads on their head (carriers) and 35 persons who never had carrier loads on their head (non-carriers). A scoring system was utilized for the assessment of the degenerative change in the cervical spine at the C3/C4, C4/C5, C5/C6 and C6/C7 levels on lateral cervical spine radiography. A total score was calculated by summing the scores for the single segments., Results and Conclusion: In 31 of the 35 (88.6%) carriers degenerative change was found in the cervical spine, but only in 8 of the 35 (22.9%) non-carriers (P < 0.01). The total score and the scores for segments C4/5, C5/C6 anc C6/C7 were significantly higher for the carriers than the non-carriers. It is concluded that the axial strain of load-carrying on the head exacerbates degenerative change in the cervical spine.

A 58-year-old woman presented with multiple gastroduodenal ulcera caused by a pancreatic polypeptidoma (PPoma) without hypergastrinemia or gastrin-producing tumor cells. After curative resection of the neoplasm, the clinical symptoms disappeared and the patient has now been disease-free for 6 years. We conclude that patients with non-gastrin-producing endocrine pancreatic tumors may demonstrate the clinical features of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and should be included in the differential diagnosis of this syndrome.

There is an ongoing debate as to which components of the ambient ozone (O3) exposure dynamics best explain adverse crop yield responses. A key issue is regarding the importance of peak versus mid-range hourly ambient O3 concentrations. While in this paper the importance of peak atmospheric O3 concentrations is not discounted, if they occur at a time when plants are conducive for uptake, the corresponding importance of more frequently occurring mid-range O3 concentrations is described. The probability of co-occurrence of high O3 concentrations and O3 uptake limiting factors is provided using coherent data sets of O3 concentration, air temperature, air humidity, mean horizontal wind velocity and global radiation measured at representative US and German air quality monitoring sites. Using the PLant-ATmosphere INteraction (PLATIN) model, the significance of the aforementioned meteorological parameters on ozone uptake is examined. In addition, the limitations of describing the O3 exposure for plants under ambient, chamberless conditions by SUM06, AOT40 or W126 exposure indices are discussed.

CO(2) enrichment is expected to alter leaf demand for nitrogen and phosphorus in plant species with C(3) carbon dioxide fixation pathway, thus possibly causing nutrient imbalances in the tissues and disturbance of distribution and redistribution patterns within the plants. To test the influence of CO(2) enrichment and elevated tropospheric ozone in combination with different nitrogen supply, spring wheat (Tritium aestivum L. cv. Minaret) was exposed to three levels of CO(2) (361, 523, and 639 microl litre(-1), 24 h mean from sowing to final harvest), two levels of ozone (28.4 and 51.3 nl litre(-1)) and two levels of nitrogen supply (150 and 270 kg ha(-1)) in a full-factorial design in open-top field chambers. Additional fertilization experiments (120, 210, and 330 kg N ha(-1)) were carried out at low and high CO(2) levels. Macronutrients (N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg) and three micronutrients (Mn, Fe, Zn) were analysed in samples obtained at three different developmental stages: beginning of shoot elongation, anthesis, and ripening. At each harvest, plant samples were separated into different organs (green and senescent leaves, stem sections, ears, grains). According to analyses of tissue concentrations at the beginning of shoot elongation, the plants were sufficiently equipped with nutrients. Elevated ozone levels neither affected tissue concentrations nor shoot uptake of the nutrients. CO(2) and nitrogen treatments affected nutrient uptake, distribution and redistribution in a complex manner. CO(2) enrichment increased nitrogen-use efficiency and caused a lower demand for nitrogen in green tissues which was reflected in a decrease of critical nitrogen concentrations, lower leaf nitrogen concentrations and lower nitrogen pools in the leaves. Since grain nitrogen uptake during grain filling depended completely on redistribution from vegetative pools in green tissues, grain nitrogen concentrations fell considerably with severe implications for grain quality. Ca, S, Mg and Zn in green tissues were influenced by CO(2) enrichment in a similar manner to nitrogen. Phosphorus concentrations in green tissues, on the other hand, were not, or only slightly, affected by elevated CO(2). In stems, 'dilution' of all nutrients except manganese was observed, caused by the huge accumulation of water soluble carbohydrates, mainly fructans, in these tissues under CO(2) enrichment. Whole shoot uptake was either remarkably increased (K, Mn, P, Mg), nearly unaffected (N, S, Fe, Zn) or decreased (Ca) under CO(2) enrichment. Thus, nutrient cycling in plant-soil systems is expected to be altered under CO(2) enrichment.

The effects of long-term carbon dioxide enrichment on competition for nutrients and light in a ryegrass/clover association were determined for simulated swards of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv. Parcour) and white clover (Trifolium repens L. cv. Karina), which were grown as monocultures and in three mixtures (25/75, 50/50, 75/25), according to the replacement design, at two levels of nitrogen (N) supply (no additional N and 200 kg N ha -1 ) and at season-long ambient (380 ppm) and elevated (670 ppm) CO 2 concentrations, in open-top chambers. Stands were cut four times, at about monthly intervals, to a height of 5 cm. Plant material was separated into different species, fresh and dry weights were determined and the content of macroelements (N, P, K, S, Mg) in both species was measured. In addition, plant height of both species at harvest dates and during several regrowth periods was monitored. Results indicate that both species made demand on different resources and profited from growth in a mixed sward. Co 2 related yield increase amounted to 16-4-2 % for white clover whereas the effect of high CO 2 on ryegrass yield ranged between -33% and +9% depending on N supply, mixture and year. As a result the contribution of white clover to total yield in mixed swards was significantly enhanced by CO 2 enrichment at many harvests in both N supply treatments. Without additional N supply, shoot competition for light was intensified by CO 2 enrichment to the disadvantage of ryegrass, since clover petioles grew longer and ryegrass was shorter at elevated CO 2 With N fertilization, no marked effect of CO 2 enrichment on interspecific competition could be observed. Since clover and total yield were increased by CO 2 enrichment, nutrient requirements were also increased and potassium deficiency and increased intraspecific competition of clover for K was observed in the mixtures under elevated CO 2 which had the highest nutrient withdrawal. Although white clover profited much more from CO 2 enrichment in both N fertilization treatments, the suppression of ryegrass in mixed swards could only be observed under low N conditions. Generally, the effect of N fertilization on competitive interference between both species was much greater than the effect of CO 2 enrichment and it is suggested that the effect of elevated CO 2 on the balance of species and the outcome of competition in a grass/clover sward is mainly dependent on the N status.

Ecotopes are the structural elements of landscapes for which matter and energy balances can be derived from measurements. Vertical flux densities are the typical entities governing their structure and function. Potential flux densities in ecotopes are discussed in detail using a complex circuit diagram that differentiates between transport and reaction columnar resistors. From this the locations and methods of measurement are deduced. Determination of flux densities between troposphere and phytosphere/pedosphere is restricted to the constant flux layer, by theory and practice.

Hemochromatosis is a multisystem disorder produced by the excessive accumulation of iron in visceral organs and the musculoskeletal system. Clinically the disease may be silent, but characteristic radiological features may point to the diagnosis. The increased iron stores in the organs involved, especially in the liver and pancreas, result in an increased attenuation at unenhanced CT and an decreased signal intensity at MR imaging. Hemochromatosis arthropathy includes degenerative osteoarthritis and chondrocalcinosis. The distribution of the arthropathy is distinctive, but not unique, frequently affecting the second and third metacarpophalangeal joints of the hand.

Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Minaret) was exposed to three CO(2) levels, in combination with two nitrogen fertilizer levels and two levels of tropospheric ozone, from sowing to ripening in open-top chambers. Three additional nitrogen fertilizer treatments were carried out at the lowest and the highest CO(2) level, respectively. Plants were harvested at growth stages 31, 65 and 93 and separated into up to eight fractions to gain information about biomass partitioning. CO(2) enrichment (263 microl litre(-1) above ambient levels) drastically increased biomass of organs serving as long-term carbohydrate pools. Peduncle weight increased by 92%, stem weight by 73% and flag leaf sheath weight by 59% at growth stage 65. Average increase in shoot biomass due to CO(2) enrichment amounted to 51% at growth stage 65 and 36% at final harvest. Average yield increase was 34%. Elevated nitrogen application was most effective on biomass of green tissues. Yield was increased by 30% when nitrogen application was increased from 150 to 270 kg N ha(-1). Significant interactions were observed between CO(2) enrichment and nitrogen application. Yield increase due to CO(2) ranged from 23% at 120 kg N to 47% at 330 kg N. Triticum aestivum cv. Minaret was not very responsive to ozone at 1.5 times ambient levels. 1000 grain weight was slightly decreased, which was compensated by an increased number of grains.

The concentrations of sulphur dioxide, nitric acid, nitrous acid, hydrogen chloride, ammonia and sulphate, nitrate, chloride and ammonium in aerosols were measured continuously for two years at the rural site of Rotenkamp near Braunschweig in south-east Lower Saxony. The level of air pollution registered is typical for rural areas near industrial areas in Central Europe. Long-range transport of polluted air masses from Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony affects air quality when high-pressure areas over Eastern Europe result in easterly winds and reduced vertical exchange due to low inversion layers.

Crossing of the physis by primarily metaphyseal, localized bone tumors and osteomyelitis in childhood was rarely observed. Therefore, the physis in childhood is considered to be a barrier against the spread of tumors and infection. We report five children, in whom MR imaging demonstrated early crossing of the physis and spread of the disease from the metaphysis to the epiphysis. Follow-up in three children with osteomyelitis showed that antibiotic therapy resulted in almost complete resolution of the changes in the physis, epiphysis and metaphysis. These observations challenge the concept of the physis as a barrier against the spread of tumors and infection.

Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Turbo) was exposed to different levels of ozone and water supply in open-top chambers in 1991. Air was charcoal filtered (CF), non-filtered (NF) and CF plus proportional addition of ambient or twice ambient ozone (CF1, CF2). Seasonal means of O(3), taken over 24 h, were 2.3, 20.6, 17.3, and 34.5 nl litre(-1) for CF, NF, CF1 and CF2 treatments, respectively. A split-plot design was used to obtain two levels of water supply: one-half of the pots was irrigated sufficiently not to show any symptoms of drought stress; the others were exposed to low water supply and received 50% of these amounts. Using a steady-state porometer approximately 800 measurements of stomatal conductance (g(s)) were made on flag leaves from 68 to 106 days after sowing. The measurements yielded only small differences of maximum conductance between the two levels of water supply. Therefore, low water supply did not protect wheat plants against ozone injury via reduced stomatal uptake in this experiment. To describe the effects of environmental variables on the stomatal behaviour, boundary-line analysis and non-linear regression analysis were used. Besides microclimatic parameters, the ozone dose of flag leaves was introduced as an independent variable affecting stomatal aperture. A well-defined boundary line for ozone dose was found, suggesting that increasing ozone dose caused stomatal closure in wheat flag leaves. But at high ozone doses, co-acting senescence seems also responsible for the decrease in stomatal conductance. A multiplicative boundary-line model was used to predict stomatal conductance from combinations of environmental variables. In the test carried out with the measurements of stomatal conductance, the model accounted only for 40% of the variation of g(s). Generalized stomatal response patterns of the herbaceous growth form, the dependence of the variables' age and ozone dose and the lack of an important factor influencing stomatal response (water status of the plant) in the model, are suggested as explanations of the poor results of the test.

This paper presents a cohesive view of the dynamics of ambient O(3) exposure and adverse crop response relationships, coupling the properties of photochemical O(3) production, flux of O(3) from the atmosphere into crop canopies and the crop response per se. The results from two independent approaches ((a) statistical and (b) micrometeorological) were analyzed for understanding cause-effect relationships of the foliar injury responses of tobacco cv Bel-W3 to the exposure dynamics of ambient O(3) concentrations. Similarly, other results from two independent approaches were analyzed in: (1) establishing a micrometeorological relationship between hourly ambient O(3) concentrations and their vertical flux from the air into a natural grassland canopy; and (2) establishing a statistical relationship between hourly ambient O(3) concentrations in long-term, chronic exposures and crop yield reductions. Independent of the approach used, atmospheric conditions appeared to be most conducive and the crop response appeared to be best explained statistically by the cumulative frequency of hourly ambient O(3) concentrations between 50 ppb and 90 ppb (100 and 180 microg m(-3)). In general, this concentration range represents intermediate or moderately enhanced hourly O(3) values in a polluted environment. Further, the diurnal occurrence of this concentration range (often approximately between 0900 and 1600 h in a polluted, agricultural environment) coincided with the optimal CO(2) flux from the atmosphere into the crop canopy, thus high uptake. The frequency of occurrence of hourly O(3) concentrations > 90 ppb (180 microg m(-3)) appeared to be of little importance and such concentrations in general appeared to occur during atmospheric conditions which did not facilitate optimal vertical flux into the crop canopy, thus low uptake. Alternatively, when > 90 ppb (180 microg m(-3)) O(3) concentrations occurred during the 0900-1600 h window, their frequency of occurrence was low in comparison to the 50-90 ppb (100-180 microg m(-3)) range. Based on the overall results, we conclude that if the cumulative frequency of hourly ambient O(3) concentrations between 50-62 ppb (100-124 microg m(-3)) occurred during 53% of the growing season and the corresponding cumulative frequency of hourly O(3) concentrations between 50-74 ppb (100-148 microg m(-3)) occurred during 71% of the growing season, then yield reductions in sensitive crops could be expected, if other factors supporting growth, such as adequate soil moisture are not limiting.

Greenhouse and ambient air experiments have shown ethylene diurea (EDU) to be a strong and specific protective suppressant of ozone injury in plants. To examine how EDU affects plant responses to various ozone (O(3)) levels under controlled field conditions, Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Lit was treated with 150 ppm EDU every 14 days and exposed in open-top chambers to charcoal-filtered air (CF), nonfiltered air (NF) or two cf treatments with ozone added. The ozone treatments were proportional additions of one (CF1) and two (CF2) times ambient ozone levels. The mean ozone concentrations in the CF, NF, CF1 and CF2 treatments were 0.98, 14.1, 14.98 and 31.56 nl litre(-1). A two-way split plot ANOVA revealed that shoot dry weight was significantly reduced by ozone. EDU treatment was highly significant for leaf dry weight, root dry weight and shoot dry weight, but not for pod dry weight; leading to a higher biomass of EDU-treated plants. Ozone/EDU interactions were significant for root weight only, indicating that EDU reduced growth suppression by ozone. These results show that EDU action on plant biomass could be interpreted as a delay in senescence since EDU-treated plants showed a significant decreased biomass loss even in the CF treatment.

To study the biochemical mechanism of EDU protection against ozone injury, peroxidase, ascorbate-dependent peroxidase, and catalase activities, and the contents of ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid, malondialdehyde and soluble protein were measured in Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Lit exposed to ozone and ethylenediurea (EDU) in open-top chambers. Plants not treated with EDU showed foliar bronzing due to ozone, while EDU-treated plants were not affected. EDU application modified the reaction of biochemical parameters to ozone. Soluble protein content was elevated by EDU. Peroxidase activity increased with ozone exposure in untreated plants only, while ascorbate-dependent peroxidase activity was lower in EDU treated plants. Catalase activity decreased in EDU-untreated plants. The ratio of ascorbic acid to dehydroascorbic acid was significantly increased in EDU treated plants. These results suggest that EDU might induce ascorbic acid synthesis and therefore provide the plant with a very potent antioxidant. Or the content of hydrogen peroxide was reduced due to other unknown processes and caused a delay in foliar senescence, regardless of whether these processes were ozone-induced or due to natural aging processes.

In the context of global climate change, an understanding of the long-term effects of increasing concentrations of atmospheric trace gases (carbon dioxide, CO(2), ozone, O(3), oxides of nitrogen, NO(x) etc.) on both cultivated and native vegetation is of utmost importance. Over the years, under field conditions, various trace gas-vegetation exposure methodologies with differing advantages and disadvantages have been used. Because of these variable criteria, with elevated O(3) or CO(2) levels, at the present time the approach of free-air experimental-release of the gas into study plots is attracting much attention. However, in the case of CO(2), this approach (using 15 m diameter study plot with a single circular array of vent pipes) has proven to be cost prohibitive (about 59000-98000 dollars/year/replicate) due to the consumption of significant quantities of the gas to perform the experiment (CO(2) level elevated to 400 ppm above the ambient). Therefore, in this paper, we present a new approach consisting of a dual, concentric exposure array of vertical risers or vent pipes. The purpose of the outer array (17 m diameter) is to vent ambient air outward and toward the incoming wind, thus providing an air curtain to reduce the velocity of that incoming wind to simulate the mode or the most frequently occurring wind speed at the study site. The inner array (15 m diameter) vents the required elevated levels of trace gases (CO(2), O(3), etc.) into the study plot. This dual array system is designed to provide spatial homogeneity (shown through diffusion modeling) of the desired trace-gas levels within the study plot and to also reduce its consumption. As an example, while in the single-array free-air CO(2)-release system the consumption of CO(2) to elevate its ambient concentration by 400 ppm is calculated to be about 980 tons/year/replicate, it is estimated that in the dual array system it would be approximately 590 tons/year/replicate. Thus, the dual array system may provide substantial cost savings (24000-39000 dollars/year/replicate) in the CO(2) consumption (60-100 dollars/ton of CO(2)) alone. Similarly, benefits in the requirements of other trace gases (O(3), NO(x), etc.) are expected, in future multivariate studies on global climate change.

The effect of ozone (O3) on growth, yield and foliar antioxidants of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Turbo) was investigated in 1990 and 1991 in Braunschweig, Germany. Plants were grown full-season in pots in open-top chambers ventilated with charcoal-filtered (CF) air to which one or two levels of O3 were added. Mean 8 h day(-1) (10.00-18.00 h) O3 concentrations in the CF and CF + O3 treatments were 5.9, 61.2 and 92.5 nl litre(-1) in 1990, and 4.7 and 86.4 nl litre(-1) in 1991. Plants that received the high O3 level showed symptoms of premature senescence of the oldest leaves and yield reductions in both growing seasons. The contents of ascorbate and glutathione and the enzyme activities of ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase were measured in symptomless flag leaves in weekly intervals before and after the beginning of anthesis. Leaf age had a significant effect on all antioxidants investigated. The O3 exposures of about 90 nl litre(-1) increased the activity of ascorbate peroxidase and the concentration of glutathione, but there were no pollutant effects on ascorbate content and glutathione reductase activity. Measurements of the antioxidant levels throughout one day showed no clear indications of diurnal changes in the antioxidative capacity in wheat flag leaves. The results are discussed in relation to the role of antioxidants in O3 detoxification.

Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Turbo was exposed to different levels of ozone and water supply in open-top chambers in 1991. The plants were grown either in charcoal filtered air (CF), not filtered air (NF), in charcoal filtered air with proportional addition of ambient ozone (CF1), or in charcoal filtered air with twice proportional addition of ambient ozone (CF2). The mean seasonal ozone concentrations (24 h mean) were 2.3, 20.6, 17.3, and 24.5 nl litre(-1) for CF, NF, CF1, and CF2 treatments, respectively. Ozone enhanced senescence and reduced growth and yield of the wheat plants. At final harvest, dry weight reductions were mainly due to reductions in ear weight. Grain yield loss by ozone mainly resulted from depressions of 1000 grain weight, whereas numbers of ears per plant and of grains per ear remained unchanged. Pollutants other than ozone did not alter the response to ozone, as was obvious from comparisons between CF1 and NF responses. Water stress alone did not enhance senescence, but also reduced growth and yield. However, yield loss mainly resulted from reductions in the number of ears per plant; 1000 grain weight was not influenced by water stress. No water supply by ozone treatment interactions were detected for any of the estimated parameters.

Measurement of the deposition of sedimenting particles requires a sampling device, which avoids simultaneous deposition of gases and aerosols to the collection surface. A sampler constructed for the purpose of collecting rain and sedimenting particles is described and characterized in detail, in particular with regard to its collection efficiency for rain. Its collection properties for gases and aerosols are shown to be negligible. From two years of sampling at different heights it was found that resuspension of particles and co-condensation of gases near the plant canopy may lead to a major overestimation of bulk deposition. As a consequence, the extension towards the canopy of the constant flux layer for sedimenting particles has to be determined experimentally. Bulk deposition of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, lead, copper, cadmium, manganese, iron, ammonium, nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, total sulfur and chloride at Braunschweig-Völkenrode, Southeast Lower Saxony, Germany, were recorded for six years. During this period a considerable decrease was observed in the deposition of lead, cadmium, nitrate, sulfate and total sulfur.

The establishment of element balances for ecosystems presupposes a knowledge of the amounts of the respective element exchanged between the ecosystem and the atmosphere near the ground by determining their vertical flux densities. Any adequate approach to calculate flux densities of gaseous species in the atmosphere has to use micrometeorological techniques. The authors applied the ratiometric method, which is described in detail. Results of flux density calculations for sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide and ammonia obtained during two years of measurement are discussed with regard to their role in element balances. Flux densities and deposition velocities of ozone are interpreted as functions of meteorological parameters as well as of the biological activity of the canopy. The latter is characterized by the flux density and flux-to-concentration ratio of carbon dioxide.

Atmospheric ammonia does not only cause acute injuries at vegetation close to the source, but significantly contributes to large scale nitrogen eutrophication and acidification of ecosystems because the amount of sources is high and after conversion to ammonium it can reach remote areas by long-range atmospheric transport. Besides having acute toxic potential, NH(3) and NH(4)(+) (= NH(y)) may disturb vegetation by secondary metabolic changes due to increased NH(y) uptake and assimilation leading to higher susceptibility to abiotic (drought, frost) and biotic (pests) stress. Prevention of damage to natural and semi-natural ecosystems will only be achieved if NH(3) emissions are drastically reduced. In this paper, the current knowledge on NH(y) emission, deposition, and its effects on vegetation and ecosystems are reviewed. Critical levels and critical loads for nitrogen deposition are discussed.

This paper provides results of ozone flux density measurements above a permanent grassland ecosystem as they relate to an establishment of air quality guidelines or standards. Using a resistance analogue, the product of zone concentration measured at a standard measurement height and the conductivity of the atmosphere reflect the maximum possible ozone flux density towards the envelope of the plants. In other words, this product can be regarded as the ozone exposure potential of the atmosphere for plants. It could be shown that ozone concentrations between 100 and 180 microg m(-3) are likely to have a great phytotoxic potential and are more important than concentrations greater than 180 microg m(-3). From the results presented one can deduce that the application of dose-response relationships based on chamber experiments to ambient conditions results in an overestimation of, for example, yield loses. Any guideline or standard has to take into account the influence of the atmospheric conductivity on the absorbed dose of ozone.

Between 1984 and 1991 in Braunschweig (South-east Lower Saxony, Germany) experiments concerning the influence of chronic stress by air pollutants to a permanent grassland ecosystem were performed, the conceptual background of which is dealt with in this paper. The site itself, the management practices and treatments applied, and the physical climate are described in detail.

Bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants were exposed to low levels of ozone (O 3 ) and/or nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) in open-top chambers during the growing seasons of 1988 and 1989. Treatments consisted of charcoal-filtered (CF) air, and CF air enriched with either O 3 (50-60 nll -1 ), NO 2 (30-40 nll -1 ) or both gases. A daily sequential exposure, O 2 followed by NO 2 , was used in each year in the combined treatment: O 2 was added for 8 h d -1 from 08.00 h until 16.00 h, and NO 2 for 16 h d -1 from 16.00 h until 08.00 h. Growth variables and key enzymes of N assimilation in leaves were investigated during vegetative growth and at anthesis. Pollutant effects varied between years. No significant effects were found in 1988. In 1989 NO 2 , alone or in sequential exposure with O 3+ , increased leaf dry weight and total biomass until anthesis. Moreover, there was a parallel increase in the extractable activity of both nitrate and nitrite reductase in the NO 2 treatments during vegetative growth, while glutamine synthetase and glutamate dehydrogenase were only increased by sequential exposure to O 3 + NO 2 . In contrast, during anthesis the activities of nitrite reductase and glutamine synthetase were lowest in leaves sequentially exposed to O 3 + NO 2 . Ozone alone had very little effect on N metabolism but suppressed growth during anthesis. At pod maturity, the lowest leaf dry weight and leaf area occurred in plants exposed to the sequential combination of O 3 + NO 2 , but yield (pod weight) was not significantly affected by any of the pollutant treatments. It is concluded that chronic exposure especially to the sequence O 3 -NO 2 reduced the capacity of the plants for N assimilation. The observed shift in nitrogen metabolism during the plants' development may have contributed to the adverse effects of the sequential treatment O 3 + NO 2 on growth variables at the end of the exposure period.

Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Turbo) was exposed in open-top chambers to six different ozone levels (8-h daily means from 12.4 to 122 microg m(-3)), to non-filtered air and to chamberless field conditions for 31 days from seedling stage through ear emergence. Powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis DC. f.sp. tritici Marchal) which developed during the exposure period was significantly enhanced from 0.3/0.6% (two chamber replicates), 1.2/2.1%, 0.9/2.2% in charcoal-filtered air (CF) to 1.5/1.6%, 3.7/4.3%, 4.4/4.6% at the highest level of ozone, on the flag leaf, second and third leaf position, respectively. Post-exposure inoculation with Septoria nodorum Berk. led to increases of disease severity on the flag leaf from 40.9/43.6% in CF to 66.3/70.6% at the highest ozone concentration and on the ears from 15.7/16.5% to 26.3/26.6%. In the same comparison, severity of spot blotch following inoculation with Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoem. (syn. Helminthosporium sativum Pamm., King et Bakke) was increased on the flag leaf from 3.6/8.9% to 12.3/23.4%. The three diseases examined correlated significantly with the ozone treatments in fumigated chambers. Disease severity was enhanced even on undamaged plant tissue (flag leaves). Infections of the two facultative pathogens on lower leaf positions started only in part from visible ozone lesions, mildew did not start from such lesions. No significant effects of ozone in the chambers on the saprobial colonization of the phyllosphere were detected, whereas there were marked differences in this respect between plants from the field and the chambers. At the highest ozone treatment, contents of chlorophyll a and carotenoids on the second leaf position declined significantly, which was associated with symptoms of premature senescence. Senescing effects of ozone are therefore assumed to be one major factor in predisposing wheat for necrotrophic leaf pathogens. Surprisingly, injurious and predisposing effects of ozone were completely absent in chambers supplied with non-filtered air containing ambient ozone at doses equivalent to those in CF + ozone chambers. Evidently, biological effects of ozone in pure air and in ambient air may differ markedly.

The ambient air quality in Central Europe appears to have the potential to adversely affect the productivity of the agroecosystems in that geographic area. Therefore, there is a need to develop, validate, and apply air pollutant exposure-plant response models to explain the relationships between the stochastic chemical climate and ecosystem responses. Such models will have to include numerical terms for the effective air pollutant exposure regime to account for the fluxes of matter, energy and information within the ecosystem and its components. The structure and function of the ecosystem which are influenced by the air pollutant flux can be described by a combination of empirical and mechanistic models. A discussion of such an approach is presented in this paper.

During three consecutive seasons (1987-1989), the effects of low-levels of O3, SO2 and NO2 singly and in all possible combinations (NO2 in 1988 and 1989 only) on growth and yield of potted plants of spring rape (Brassica napus L. var. napus, 'callypso') were investigated by means of factorial fumigation experiments in open-top chambers. Plants were exposed from the early vegetative stage of development until seed harvest, to charcoal-filtered air (CF; control) and CF which was supplemented for 8-h per day (8.00-16.00) with O3, for 16-h per day with NO2 (16.00-8.00) and continuously with SO2. Including the controls, the 24-h daily mean concentrations [microg m(-3)] ranged between 6-44 (O3), 9-88 (SO2) and 10-43 (NO2). The corresponding daily mean concentrations during the time of fumigation were 10-121 and 11-60 microg m(-3) for O3 and NO2, respectively. Single effects of O3 on growth and yield parameters were mostly negative and the magnitude of this effect was dependent on the season. O3 reduced plant dry weight by 11.3-18.6% and yield of seeds by 11.4-26.9%. While medium levels of SO2 stimulated the weight of pods up to 33%, higher concentrations (88 microg m(-3)) caused a decline of yield of 12.3%. From the significant interactive effects which were observed, it could be established that SO2 and NO2 alone mostly acted positively, but that their interaction with each other and especially with O3 was antagonistic, as some of the detrimental effects of O3 were mitigated by these pollutants. An important antagonistic effect between SO2 and O3 or NO2 was observed on yield. While 56 microg m(-3) SO2 increased yield by 9.9% compared to the control treatment, it aggravated the yield loss caused by O3 from -16.18% to -21.4%, and it reduced the yield stimulation caused by NO2 from +11.8% to +4.2%. Leaf area was the only parameter which was negatively affected by all pollutants, their joint action being synergistic.

Enzymatic activity (peroxidase, glutamate dehydrogenase, glutamine synthetase), foliage buffering capacity, soluble protein and nitrogen content were measured in current and previous year needles from young spruce (Picea abies) and fir (Abies alba). The trees were exposed to low levels of SO(2) and/or O(3) and simulated acidic precipitation (pH 4.0) in open-top chambers from 1983 through 1988. Needle samples were taken during March 1988 at the end of the five-year fumigation period. Exposure to SO(2) substantially increased sulphur content in both needle age classes of spruce and fir, and concomitantly reduced the foliage buffering capacity index (BCI), whereas the combined fumigation with SO(2) and O(3) had no effect on BCI. Peroxidase activity was markedly higher in year-old needles compared to current-year needles. However, trees from the SO(2) and SO(2) + O(3) treatments exhibited statistically significant stimulated peroxidase activities. Similarly, changes in the activities of the nitrogen-metabolizing enzymes indicated an altered cellular function of the trees after the long-term pollution stress. Levels of activity of both glutamate dehydrogenase and glutamine synthetase were increased by exposure to SO(2), especially in spruce. Although glutamate dehydrogenase in spruce was affected by all treatments, such changes in activity were found in fir only with the SO(2) treatment. The highest activity of glutamine synthetase, however, occurred in the older needles of trees exposed to SO(2) + O(3). Total nitrogen concentration was either unaffected by the pollutant treatments or decreased in spruce compared to the controls. No statistically significant changes due to the fumigation were found in soluble protein concentrations. Results indicated that chronic exposure to air pollutants lead to alterations in metabolic processes in conifer needles, detectable either by changes in typical stress indicating values or by increases in ammonium assimilation capacity.

Potted plants of commercial cultivars of rape (Brassica napus L., cv. 'callypso'), summer barley (Hordeum vulgare L., cvs. 'arena' and 'hockey') and bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L., cvs. 'rintintin' and 'rosisty') were continuously exposed in open-top chambers to sulphur dioxide (SO(2)) for the whole growing season in order to assess effects of this pollutant on growth and various yield parameters. Treatments consisted of charcoal-filtered air (CF) and CF supplemented with four levels of SO(2), resulting in mean exposure concentrations (microg m(-3)) of approximately 8, 50, 90, 140 and 190. With the exception of the 1000 seeds weight, which was slightly reduced, dry matter production and yield parameters of rape remained unaffected by all SO(2) concentrations or were even stimulated. Compared to CF vegetative growth of both bean cultivars was reduced by 10-26% at all SO(2) levels; however, with significant effects only for cv. 'rintintin'. While all SO(2) additions reduced significantly the yield (dry weight of pods) of the bean cultivar 'rosisty' between 17% and 32%, cv. 'rintintin' showed a significant reduction of up to 42% only at the two highest pollutant concentrations. Dry matter production of the barley cultivars was mainly impaired at SO(2) concentrations > 100 microg m(-3) with a reduction of 30-52%. While nearly all yield parameters of cv. 'hockey' reacted similar to the dry matter production, the yield of cv. 'arena' was reduced already at the low SO(2) levels. At a treatment concentration of 90 microg SO(2) m(-3) a significant yield loss of 30% was recorded. A reduction of the 1000 grains weight mainly contributed to these yield losses observed for both barley cultivars. From these results, it may be assumed that SO(2) concentrations within the range 50-90 microg m(-3) are potentially phytotoxic to some crop species.

Seedlings of fir (Abies alba Mill.) and spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) were fumigated with SO(2), O(3) and SO(2) + O(3) in open-top chambers (OTCs) for almost 5 vegetation periods. As background stress, simulated rain of pH 4.0 was applied. Nutrient content of soil, soil solutions, and trees was investigated and balanced. In the upper partition of the soil high concentrations of exchangeable Ca(2+) were found in all chambers. The SO(2) and SO(2) + O(3) treatments led to increased Ca(2+), Mg(2+) and Mn(2+) concentrations in soil solution and the pool of exchangeable protons increased. This response was most evident in the SO(2) and SO(2) + O(3) chambers and less clear in the filtered pH 5.0 control chamber. In the SO(2) treatment increased Mn and S levels were found in the needles. Ca content in the needles showed a decreasing trend. O(3) alone had no consistent effect on needle nutrient content.

SO 2 -fumigation experiments were conducted with plants of pea (Pisum sativum) and corn (Zea mays) recognized to be, respectively, sensitive and tolerant to the gas. Accumulation of inorganic sulfur in the tissues revealed that the pea takes up considerably greater amounts of SO 2 than corn. Porometer measurements and transpiration coefficients show that this greater SO 2 uptake is partly related to the lower leaf diffusion resistance of peas. Additional internal sinks for SO 2 uptake are discussed in order to give a complete explanation of the differential SO 2 uptake of the two species.

This paper reports the effects of NaCl on the in vivo activity of glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) and glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and on the in vitro activity of GDH, both enzymes having been isolated from plants differing in salt tolerance. The plants investigated were Vicia faba (salt-sensitive), Atriplex nitens and Atriplex calotheca (more or less salt-tolerant), and Atriplex halimus (halophyte) grown at various NaCl concentrations. GDH and GOT isolated from various salt-tolerant plants grown at low NaCl concentrations were inhibited in a similar way. At high NaCl concentrations, the enzyme activities remain at constant values only in the Atriplex species. GOT was more impaired by NaCl than GDH. In the case of GOT, the double reciprocal plot indicated the type of a noncompetitive inhibition. The in vitro effect of NaCl on the activity of GDH from the differentially salt-tolerant plants was of a different kind, i.e. GDH isolated from V. faba was clearly inhibited by NaCl, whereas NaCl stimulated the activity of GDH from all Atriplex species investigated. Kinetic analysis showed that substrate inhibition of GDH from A. nitens and A. calotheca grown at non-saline conditions could be removed by NaCl. Inhibition by high NaCl concentrations at low substrate concentrations was removable by increasing substrate concentrations. Moreover, the inhibition at low substrate concentrations was shown to be competitive. GDH lost this regulatory property when the plants were pretreated with 500 mM NaCl. GDH from A. halimus also possessed this control, but in contrast to A. nitens and A. calotheca, activity and control of GDH isolated from A. halimus were stimulated by pretreating the plants with 500 mM NaCl. The results showed that DDH isolated from the salt-tolerant Atriplex species was adapted to high NaCl concentrations of the tissue. Possible mechanisms of the interactions between GDH from salt-tolerant Atriplex species and NaCl are discussed.

A cell line of Eschscholtzia californica selected for meta-fluorotyrosine (MFT) tolerance was found to have 10-fold increased levels of phenylalanine and tyrosine compared to the parent line, while most other amino acids were only increased 2-fold. Tracer experiments with shikimic acid in the presence of MFT showed that the biosynthesis of the aromatic amino acids was not impaired in the tolerant line. Feeding experiments with phenylalanine, tyrosine, or shikimic acid also revealed a reduced turnover of the pools of the aromatic amino acids in the variant. Thus undisturbed de novo biosynthesis of the aromatic amino acids and dilution of toxic effects of MFT by the enlarged pool sizes seemed to be the main reason for the acquired tolerance. Despite the enlarged availability of the precursor tyrosine, formation of the benzophenanthridine alkaloids was enhanced neither in the growth nor in the production medium.
