2. Excess Optical Enhancement Observed with ARCONS for Early Crab Giant Pulses

Abstract

We observe an extraordinary link in the Crab pulsar between the enhancement of an optical pulse and the timing of the corresponding giant radio pulse. At optical through infrared wavelengths, our observations use the high time resolution of ARCONS, a unique superconducting energy-resolving photon-counting array at the Palomar 200-inch telescope. At radio wavelengths, we observe with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope and the GUPPI backend. We see an $11.3\pm2.5\%$ increase in peak optical flux for pulses that have an accompanying giant radio pulse arriving near the peak of the optical main pulse, in contrast to a $3.2\pm0.5\%$ increase when an accompanying giant radio pulse arrives soon after the optical peak. We also observe that the peak of the optical main pulse is $2.8\pm0.8\%$ enhanced when there is a giant radio pulse accompanying the optical interpulse. We observe no statistically significant spectral differences between optical pulses accompanied by and not accompanied by giant radio pulses. Our results extend previous observations of optical-radio correlation to the time and spectral domains. Our refined temporal correlation suggests that optical and radio emission are indeed causally linked, and the lack of spectral differences suggests that the same mechanism is responsible for all optical emission., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

In the category of ⊤-quasi-Cauchy spaces, completeness and completion can be studied in a non-symmetric framework encompassing ⊤-quasi-uniform (limit) spaces. Based on constructions by E.E. Reed in the category of Cauchy spaces and, recently, by L. Reid and G. Richardson in the category of ⊤-Cauchy spaces, we give a family of completions for a non-complete ⊤-quasi Cauchy space. Abstract

Since the advent of phylogenetic linguistics, researchers have used a large number of phylogenetic comparative methods adapted from computational biology to model and analyze the dynamics of change of a wide range of linguistic features. Models of this sort vary in complexity; the simplest models of change assume homogeneity of transition rates within families, while state-of-the-art models of heterotachy allow transition rates to vary across lineages within a family. In this contribution, I review a range of applications of biological models of rate variation to questions in diachronic linguistics and highlight some models from computational biology that have remained largely overlooked by linguists.Building off of these and other biological models, I sketch out a program for what I term DISTRIBUTIONAL PHYLOGENETIC MODELING, inspired by an analogousrecently proposed family of hierarchical Bayesian models. I report the results of some work in progress carried out within this framework and present a casestudy illustrating the flexibility of the approach.

We study suitable diagonal conditions for ⊤-uniform limit spaces. A dual diagonal condition is shown to be a suitable axiom for uniform regularity. We characterize this regularity concept by closures of L-sets. We apply all these diagonal axioms and prove an extension theorem for uniformly continuous mappings defined on a dense subspace. Abstract

We show, for a commutative and integral quantale, that the recently introduced category of ⊤-uniform convergence spaces is a topological category which possesses natural function spaces, making it Cartesian closed. Furthermore, as two important examples for ⊤-uniform convergence spaces, we study probabilistic uniform spaces and quantale-valued metric spaces. The underlying ⊤-convergence spaces are also described and it is shown that in the case of a probabilistic uniform space this ⊤-convergence is the convergence of a fuzzy topology with conical neighbourhood filters. Finally it is shown that the category of ⊤-uniform convergence spaces can be embedded into the category of stratified lattice-valued uniform convergence spaces as a reflective subcategory. Abstract

We explore the proof theory of the modal \(\mu \)-calculus with converse, aka the ‘full \(\mu \)-calculus’. Building on nested sequent calculi for tense logics and infinitary proof theory of fixed point logics, a cut-free sound and complete proof system for full \(\mu \)-calculus is proposed. As a corollary of our framework, we also obtain a direct proof of the regular model property for the logic: every satisfiable formula has a tree model with finitely many distinct subtrees. To obtain the results we appeal to the basic theory of well-quasi-orderings in the spirit of Kozen’s proof of the finite model property for \(\mu \)-calculus without converse.
