We discuss recent experiments in which fine particles of the organic superconductor Rb$_3$C$_{60}$ or the cuprate superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ are held in a polystyrene film that is spin-coated on to a silicon substrate with or without an intervening gold, or another inert metallic layer. From SQUID magnetisation data for Rb$_3$C$_{60}$ there appears to be a striking and completely unexpected increase in the superconducting transition temperature from $30$ to $45$~K, which is ascribed to coupling between the electrons in the superconductor and vacuum fluctuations in the electromagnetic field just above the metallic film. We argue that this could be a non-intrinsic effect associated with the presence of solid oxygen in the Pyrex sample tube. We suggest that the ferromagnetic SQUID signal observed for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ particles in polystyrene could be attributed to ferromagnetic particles or magnetic clusters of unknown origin.

The influence of the molecular structure of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on the photoalignment process at the NLC -- polymer interface has been investigated experimentally. NLCs having exclusively phenyl-, or cyclohexane rings in the rigid core, as well as NLCs containing both phenyl and cyclohexane groups have been considered. Substantial differences have been found in the photoalignment process depending on the molecular structure of the NLC, supporting the assumption that the polymer -- NLC interface should be regarded as a coupled system, where the two components mutually influence each other. We provide experimental evidence that photoalignment at the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) - polymer interface can not be simply considered as a two-dimensional process. Moreover, our experiments clearly indicate that the photoaligning process does not depend on the individual properties of the NLC material and those of the interfacing polymer exclusively. According to our measurements, the polymer and the NLC layer "sense-each-other", i.e., the polymer-liquid crystal interface should be regarded as a coupled system, where the two components mutually influence each other. Furthermore, we show that the temperature induced anchoring transition also has to be taken into account for the complete description of the photoalignment mechanism., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, submitted

Enhanced microwave absorption, larger than that in the normal state, is observed in fine grains of type-II superconductors (MgB$_2$ and K$_3$C$_{60}$) for magnetic fields as small as a few $\%$ of the upper critical field. The effect is predicted by the theory of vortex motion in type-II superconductors, however its direct observation has been elusive due to skin-depth limitations; conventional microwave absorption studies employ larger samples where the microwave magnetic field exclusion significantly lowers the absorption. We show that the enhancement is observable in grains smaller than the penetration depth. A quantitative analysis on K$_3$C$_{60}$ in the framework of the Coffey--Clem (CC) theory explains well the temperature dependence of the microwave absorption and also allows to determine the vortex pinning force constant.

The $1/4$-filled organic compound, $\delta$-(EDT-TTF-CONMe$_{2}$)$_{2}$AsF$_6$ is a frustrated two-dimensional triangular magnetic system as shown by high-frequency (111.2 and 222.4 GHz) electron spin resonance (ESR) and structural data in the literature. The material gradually orders antiferromagnetically below 40~K but some magnetically disordered domains persist down to 4 K. We propose that in defect free regions frustration prevents true magnetic order down to at least 4 K in spite of the large first- and second-neighbor exchange interactions along chains and between chains, respectively. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) order gradually developing below 40 K nucleates around structural defects that locally cancel frustration. Two antiferromagnetic resonance modes mapped in the principal planes at 4~K are assigned to the very weakly interacting one-dimensional molecular chains in antiferromagnetic regions.

The $10$ GHz microwave conductivity, $\sigma(T)$ and high field, $222$ GHz electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) of Li$_4$C$_{60}$ fulleride is measured in a wide temperature range. We suggest that the majority of ESR active sites and at least some of the charge carriers for $\sigma(T)$ are electrons bound to a small concentration of surplus or vacancy ions in the polymer phase. Both $\sigma(T)$ and the ESR line shape depend on ionic motion. A change of the activation energy of $\sigma(T)$ at $125$ K coincides with the onset of the ionic DC conductivity. The ESR line shape is determined mainly by Li ionic motion within octahedral voids below $150$ K. At higher temperatures, fluctuations due to ionic diffusion change the environment of defects from axial to effectively isotropic on the ESR time scale. $\sigma(T)$ data up to $700$ K through the depolymerization transition confirm that the monomeric phase of Li$_4$C$_{60}$ is a metal.

Instabilities are discussed which take place when a nematic liquid crystal (LC) layer, enclosed between a planar reference plate and a photosensitive substrate, is illuminated with polarized light from the reference side ({\it reverse} geometry). The dependence of the observed effects on the wavelength, polarization direction of the light, and on the thickness of the LC layer is explained by a model based on photoinduced surface torque. Liquid crystal layers sandwiched between a reference plate and a photosensitive substrate were investigated. We focused on the reverse geometry, where the cell was illuminated by a laser beam from the reference side. In planar cells instabilities occurred, static and dynamic ones, depending on the angle between the laser polarization and the director orientation on the reference plate. In cells where the molecules were aligned along the normal of the reference plate, dynamic pattern was observed at all angles of polarization. A simple model based on a photo-induced surface torque gives account of the findings. Light scattering studies revealed some basic properties of the instabilities., Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev. In a planar liquid crystal sample sandwiched between a photosensitive and a reference plate instabilities occurred, when the cell was illuminated from the reference side. The instabilities were induced both by polarized white light source and monochromatic laser beams. Static and dynamic regimes were found; for laser irradiation dynamic instability was found only in a range of polarization directions. A model, developed for monochromatic excitation, predicts that at certain thicknesses dynamic instability is forbidden. Field-induced antiferromagnetic (AF) fluctuations and magnetization are observed above the (zero-field) ordering temperature, T_N = 23 K by electron spin resonance in kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Cl, a quasi two-dimensional antiferromagnet with a large isotropic Heisenberg exchange interaction. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction is the main source of anisotropy, the exchange anisotropy and the interlayer coupling are very weak. The AF magnetization is induced by magnetic fields perpendicular to the DM vector; parallel fields have no effect. The different orientation of the DM vectors and the g factor tensors in adjacent layers allows the distinction between interlayer and intralayer correlations. Magnetic fields induce the AF magnetization independently in adjacent layers. We suggest that the phase transition temperature, T_N is determined by intralayer interactions alone., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We studied spin excitations of the multiferroic Ba2CoGe2O7 in high magnetic fields up to 33 T. In the electron spin resonance and far infrared absorption spectra we found several spin excitations beyond the two conventional magnon modes expected for such a two-sublattice antiferromagnet. We show that a multi-boson spin-wave theory can capture these unconventional modes, that include spin-stretching modes associated with an oscillating magnetic dipole (or only quadrupole) moment. The lack of the inversion symmetry allows these modes to become electric dipole active. We expect that the spin-stretching modes can be generally observed in inelastic neutron scattering and light absorption experiments in a broad class of ordered S > 1/2 spin systems with strong single-ion anisotropy and/or non-centrosymmetric lattice structure., Comment: 5+4 pages, 3 figures, supplement added, manuscript revised

We present a multi-frequency Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) study in the range of 4 GHz to 420 GHz of the quasi-one-dimensional, non-dimerized, quarter-filled Mott insulators, delta-(EDT-TTF-CONMe_2)_2X (X=AsF_6, Br). In the high temperature orthorhombic phase above T~190 K, the magnitude and the temperature dependence of the high temperature spin susceptibility are described by a S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with J_AsF6=298 K and J_Br=474 K coupling constants for X=AsF_6 and Br respectively. We estimate from the temperature dependence of the line width an exchange anisotropy, J'/J of ~2 * 10^{-3}. The frequency dependence of the line width and the g-shift have an unusual quadratic dependence in all crystallographic orientations that we attribute to an antisymmetric exchange (Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya) interaction., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

A high frequency (111.2-420 GHz) electron spin resonance study of the inter-layer (perpendicular) spin diffusion as a function of pressure and temperature is presented in the conducting phases of the layered organic compounds, {\kappa}-(BEDT-TTF)2-Cu[N(CN)2]X ({\kappa}-ET2-X), X=Cl or Br. The resolved ESR lines of adjacent layers at high temperatures and high frequencies allows for the determination of the inter-layer cross spin relaxation time, Tx and the intrinsic spin relaxation time, T2 of single layers. In the bad metal phase spin diffusion is two-dimensional, i.e. spins are not hopping to adjacent layers within T2. Tx is proportional to the perpendicular resistivity at least approximately, as predicted in models where spin and charge excitations are tied together. In {\kappa}-ET2-Cl, at zero pressure Tx increases as the bad metal-insulator transition is approached. On the other hand, Tx decreases as the normal metal and superconducting phases are approached with increasing pressure and/or decreasing temperature., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

We present an ESR study at excitation frequencies of 9.4 GHz and 222.4 GHz of powders and single crystals of a Prussian Blue analogue (PBA), RbMn[Fe(CN)6]*H2O in which Fe and Mn undergoes a charge transfer transition between 175 and 300 K. The ESR of PBA powders, also reported by Pregelj et al. (JMMM, 316, E680 (2007)) is assigned to cubic magnetic clusters of Mn2+ ions surrounding Fe(CN)6 vacancies. The clusters are well isolated from the bulk and are superparamagnetic below 50 K. In single crystals various defects with lower symmetry are also observed. Spin-lattice relaxation broadens the bulk ESR beyond observability. This strong spin relaxation is unexpected above the charge transfer transition and is attributed to a mixing of the Mn3+ - Fe2+ state into the prevalent Mn2+ - Fe3+ state., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRB

We describe a quasi-optical multifrequency ESR spectrometer operating in the 75-225 GHz range and optimized at 210 GHz for general use in condensed matter physics, chemistry and biology. The quasi-optical bridge detects the change of mm wave polarization at the ESR. A controllable reference arm maintains a mm wave bias at the detector. The attained sensitivity of 2x10^10 spin/G/(Hz)1/2, measured on a dilute Mn:MgO sample in a non-resonant probe head at 222.4 GHz and 300 K, is comparable to commercial high sensitive X band spectrometers. The spectrometer has a Fabry-Perot resonator based probe head to measure aqueous solutions, and a probe head to measure magnetic field angular dependence of single crystals. The spectrometer is robust and easy to use and may be operated by undergraduate students. The layered organic compounds, kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2X (X=Cl, Br) are metals at ambient temperatures. At low temperatures, the Cl compound is a weakly ferromagnetic Mott insulator while the isostructural Br compound is a superconductor. We find by conduction electron spin resonance (CESR) and antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) an extreme anisotropy of spin transport and magnetic interactions in these materials. In the metallic state spin diffusion is confined to single molecular layers within the spin lifetime of 10^-9 s. Electrons diffuse several hundreds of nm without hopping to the next molecular layer. In the magnetically ordered insulating phase of the Cl compound we observe and calculate the four AFMR modes of the weakly coupled single molecular layers. The inter-plane exchange field is comparable or less than the typically 1 mT dipolar field and almost 10^6 times less than the intra-layer exchange field., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. The temperature dependence of the electron spin relaxation time in MgB2 is anomalous as it does not follow the temperature dependence of the resistivity above 150 K, it has a maximum around 400 K, and it decreases for higher temperatures. This violates the well established Elliot-Yafet theory of electron spin relaxation in metals. We show that the anomaly occurs when the quasi-particle scattering rate (in energy units) becomes comparable to the energy difference between the conduction- and a neighboring band. We find that the anomalous behavior is related to the unique band structure of MgB$_2$ and the large electron-phonon coupling. The saturating spin-lattice relaxation can be regarded as the spin transport analogue of the Ioffe-Regel criterion of electron transport.

We present a study on the structural, spectroscopic, conducting and magnetic properties of Mg5C60, a two dimensional (2D) fulleride polymer. The polymer phase is stable up to the exceptionally high temperature of 823 K. Infrared and Raman studies suggest the formation of single bonds between fulleride ions and possibly Mg - C60 covalent bonds. Mg5C60 is a metal at ambient temperature as shown by electron spin resonance and microwave conductivity measurements. The smooth transition from a metallic to a paramagnetic insulator state below 200 K is attributed to Anderson localization driven by structural disorder., Comment: 5 pages 6 figures

We investigate both theoretically and experimentally the rotational dynamics of micrometric droplets of dye-doped and pure liquid crystal induced by circularly and elliptically polarized laser light. The droplets are dispersed in water and trapped in the focus of the laser beam. Since the optical torque acting on the molecular director is known to be strongly enhanced in light-absorbing dye-doped materials, the question arises whether a similar enhancement takes place also for the overall optical torque acting on the whole droplets. We searched for such enhancement by measuring and comparing the rotation speed of dye-doped droplets induced by a laser beam having a wavelength either inside or outside the dye absorption band, and also comparing it with the rotation of pure liquid crystal droplets. No enhancement was found, confirming that photoinduced dye effects are only associated with an internal exchange of angular momentum between orientational and translational degrees of freedom of matter. Our result provides also the first direct experimental proof of the existence of a photoinduced stress tensor in the illuminated dye-doped liquid crystal. Finally, peculiar photoinduced dynamical effects are predicted to occur in droplets in which the molecular director is not rigidly locked to the flow, but so far they could not be observed.

The spin-lattice relaxation time, $T_{1}$, of conduction electrons is measured as a function of temperature and magnetic field in MgB$_2$. The method is based on the detection of the $z$ component of the conduction electron magnetization under electron spin resonance conditions with amplitude modulated microwave excitation. Measurement of $T_{1}$ below $T_c$ at 0.32 T allows to disentangle contributions from the two Fermi surfaces of MgB$_{2}$ as this field restores normal state on the Fermi surface part with $\pi$ symmetry only., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

In NaNiO2, Ni3+ ions form a quasi two dimensional triangular lattice of S = 1=2 spins. The magnetic order observed below 20K has been described as an A type antiferromagnet with ferro- magnetic layers weakly coupled antiferromagnetically. We studied the magnetic excitations with the electron spin resonance for frequencies 1-20 cm-1, in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The bulk of the results are interpreted in terms of a phenomenological model involving bi-axial anisotropy for the spins: a strong easy-plane term, and a weaker anisotropy within the plane. The direction of the easy plane is constrained by the collective Jahn-Teller distortion occurring in this material at 480 K.

Na2C60 is believed to be an electron-hole counterpart of the Mott-Jahn--Teller insulator A4C60 salts. We present a study of infrared, ESR, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, chemical composition and neutron scattering on this compound. Our spectroscopic results at room temperature can be reconciled in a picture of segregated, separate regions of the size 3--10 nm. We observe a significant insulating C60 phase and at least two more phases, one of which we assign to metallic Na3C60. The separation disappears on heating by jump diffusion of the sodium ions, which we followed by neutron scattering. C59N magnetic fullerenes were formed inside single-wall carbon nanotubes by vacuum annealing functionalized C59N molecules encapsulated inside the tubes. A hindered, anisotropic rotation of C59N was deduced from the temperature dependence of the electron spin resonance spectra near room temperature. Shortening of spin-lattice relaxation time, T_1, of C59N indicates a reversible charge transfer toward the host nanotubes above $\sim 350$ K. Bound C59N-C60 heterodimers are formed at lower temperatures when C60 is co-encapsulated with the functionalized C59N. In the 10-300 K range, T_1 of the heterodimer shows a relaxation dominated by the conduction electrons on the nanotubes.

High filling of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) with C$_{60}$ and C$_{70}$ fullerenes in solvent is reported at temperatures as low as 69 $^{o}$C. A 2 hour long refluxing in n-hexane of the mixture of the fullerene and SWCNT results in a high yield of C$_{60}$,C$_{70}$@SWCNT, fullerene peapod, material. The peapod filling is characterized by TEM, Raman and electron energy loss spectroscopy and X-ray scattering. We applied the method to synthesize the temperature sensitive (N@C$_{60}$:C$_{60}$)@SWCNT as proved by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The solvent prepared peapod samples can be transformed to double walled nanotubes enabling a high yield and industrially scalable production of DWCNT.

Hole induced changes in the antiferromagnetic structure of a lightly Ca doped Gd:Y_{1-x}Ca_xBa_2Cu_3O_6 copper oxide single crystal with x~0.008 is investigated by Gd3+ electron spin resonance. Holes do not localize to Ca2+ ions above 2.5 K since the charge distribution and spin susceptibility next to the Ca2+ are independent of temperature. Both hole doped and pristine crystals are magnetically twinned with an external magnetic field dependent antiferromagnetic domain structure. Unlike the undoped crystal, where the easy magnetic axis is along [100] at all temperatures, the easy direction in the hole doped crystal is along the [110] diagonal at low temperatures and changes gradually to the [100] direction between 10 K and 100 K. Compressed Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 films (250nm) deposited on LaAlO3 have been studied by Electron Spin Resonance technique under high frequency and high magnetic field. We show evidences for the presence of a ferromagnetic phase (FM) embedded in the charge-order phase (CO), in form of thin layers which size depends on the strength and orientation of the magnetic field (parallel or perpendicular to the substrate plane). This FM phase presents an easy plane magnetic anisotropy with an anisotropy constant 100 times bigger than typical bulk values. When the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the substrate plane, the FM phase is strongly coupled to the CO phase whereas for the parallel orientation it keeps an independent ferromagnetic resonance even when the CO phase becomes antiferromagnetic., Comment: to be published in EPJB

The magnetic field dependence of the spin-susceptibility, $\chi_{s}$ was measured in the superconducting state of high purity MgB$_{2}$ fine powders below 1.3 T. $\chi_{s}$ was determined from the intensity of the conduction electron spin resonance spectra at 3.8, 9.4, and 35 GHz. At the lowest magnetic fields (0.14 T), a gap opens in the density of states at the Fermi energy and, accordingly, $\chi_{s}(T)$ is small at low temperatures. Fields above 0.2 T (about 15 % of $H^{c}_{c2}$, the minimum upper critical field), destroy the gap. The field induced $\chi_{s}$ is much larger than expected from current superconductor models of MgB$_{2}$.

The role played by the Nd ions in the magnetic properties of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and Nd0.7Ca0.3MnO3 is studied using static magnetization, neutron diffraction and high frequency (9.4-475GHz) Electron Spin Resonance. We show that the Nd ions are weakly coupled to the Mn ions via ferromagnetic exchange and are responsible for the peculiar ferromagnetic resonance observed in the FM phase of both compounds (ground state below 120K for x=0.3, high field state for x=0.5). We then use ESR to look for magnetic phase separation in the low field, CO phase of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3. We show that there is no trace of the FM phase imbedded in the CO phase, contrary to what is observed in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 or Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3., Comment: to be published in phys.Rev.B as a Rapid Comm

We have observed the conduction electron spin resonance (CESR) in fine powders of MgB2 both in the superconducting and normal states. The Pauli susceptibility is chi_s=2.0*10^{-5} emu/mole in the temperature range of 450 to 600 K. The spin relaxation rate has an anomalous temperature dependence. The CESR measured below T_c at several frequencies suggests that MgB_2 is a strongly anisotropic superconductor with the upper critical field, H_c2, ranging between 2 and 16 T. The high-field reversible magnetization data of a randomly oriented powder sample are well described assuming that MgB_2 is an anisotropic superconductor with H_c2^{ab} / H_{c2}^{c} \approx 6--9., Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figures

We have measured the spin susceptibility of the underdoped high temperature superconductor, YBa2Cu4O8 by Gd^{3+} electron spin resonance in single crystals and aligned powders at several magnetic fields between 3 and 15.4 T. At low temperatures and high fields, the spin susceptibility of the CuO2 planes is enhanced slightly in the $B\parallel c$ orientation with respect to the $B\perp c$ orientation. The enhancement in an applied field of 15.4 T ($\approx 0.15 H_{c2}$) at 16 K (0.2 $T_c$) is approximately 10 percent of the susceptibility measured at $T_c$. Such a small magnitude suggests that the second critical field of superconductivity, $H_{c2}\approx 100 T$, would not suppress the pseudogap. In a recent Letter Ando et al (cond-mat/9905071) discovered an anomalous magnetoresistance(MR) in hole doped antiferromagnetic YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, which they attributed to charged stripes, i.e., to segregation of holes into lines. In this Comment we show that the experiments, albeit being interesting, do not prove the existence of stripes. In our view the anomalous behavior is due to an (a,b) plane anisotropy of the resistivity in the bulk and to a magnetic field dependent antiferromagnetic (AF) domain structure. We report on the magnetic resonance of NH_3K_3C_60 powders in the frequency range of 9 to 225 GHz. The observation of an antiferromagnetic resonance below the phase transition at 40 K is evidence for an antiferromagnetically ordered ground state. In the normal state, above 40 K, the temperature dependence of the spin-susceptibilty measured by ESR agrees with previous static measurements and is too weak to be explained by interacting localized spins in an insulator. The magnetic resonance line width has an unusual magnetic-field dependence which is large and temperature independent in the magnetically ordered state and decreases rapidly above the transition. These observations agree with the suggestion that NH_3K_3C_60 is a metal in the normal state and undergoes a Mott-Hubbard metal to insulator transition at 40 K., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. Infrared transmission, electron spin resonance, and X-ray diffraction measurements show unambiguously that RbC$_{60}$ and KC$_{60}$ are stable in air, in contrast to Rb$_{6}$C$_{60}$ which decomposes rapidly upon exposure. The specimens studied transform into pure C$_{60}$ and other byproducts when heated above $100\dd $C, approximately the temperature of the orthorhombic-fcc phase transition. The stability of these compounds raises the possibility of applying them as protective layers for the superconducting fullerides., Comment: Scheduled for publication in Appl. Phys.
