Abstract Neutrino oscillation experiments provide a unique window in exploring several new physics scenarios beyond the standard three flavour. One such scenario is quantum decoherence in neutrino oscillation which tends to destroy the interference pattern of neutrinos reaching the far detector from the source. In this work, we study the decoherence in neutrino oscillation in the context of the ESSnuSB experiment. We consider the energy-independent decoherence parameter and derive the analytical expressions for P μe and P μμ probabilities in vacuum. We have computed the capability of ESSnuSB to put bounds on the decoherence parameters namely, Γ21 and Γ32 and found that the constraints on Γ21 are competitive compared to the DUNE bounds and better than the most stringent LBL ones from MINOS/MINOS+. We have also investigated the impact of decoherence on the ESSnuSB measurement of the Dirac CP phase δ CP and concluded that it remains robust in the presence of new physics.

Abstract Noble element time projection chambers are a leading technology for rare event detection in physics, such as for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Time projection chambers typically assign event position in the drift direction using the relative timing of prompt scintillation and delayed charge collection signals, allowing for reconstruction of an absolute position in the drift direction. In this paper, alternate methods for assigning event drift distance via quantification of electron diffusion in a pure high pressure xenon gas time projection chamber are explored. Data from the NEXT-White detector demonstrate the ability to achieve good position assignment accuracy for both high- and low-energy events. Using point-like energy deposits from $$^{83\textrm{m}}$$ 83 m Kr calibration electron captures ( $$E\sim 45$$ E ∼ 45 keV), the position of origin of low-energy events is determined to 2 cm precision with bias $$< 1~$$ < 1 mm. A convolutional neural network approach is then used to quantify diffusion for longer tracks ( $$E\ge ~1.5$$ E ≥ 1.5 MeV), from radiogenic electrons, yielding a precision of 3 cm on the event barycenter. The precision achieved with these methods indicates the feasibility energy calibrations of better than 1% FWHM at Q $$_{\beta \beta }$$ β β in pure xenon, as well as the potential for event fiducialization in large future detectors using an alternate method that does not rely on primary scintillation.

Recent research has emphasized the importance of addressing specific victim-related factors to reduce victims’ vulnerability and prevent future revictimization experiences. This study aimed to analyze the vulnerability profiles of women who were victims of intimate partner violence, including those who had experienced a single incident of violence and those who had endured revictimization. Participants were 338 women with active judicial protection measures registered in the system of support for victims of gender violence (VioGén) in Madrid, Spain. The analysis considered sociodemographic characteristics, victimization history, perceived triggers of violence, women’s responses and feelings, as well as clinical outcomes linked to revictimization history. The study revealed that many victims faced socioeconomic vulnerability. Furthermore, the findings underscored the intricate link between the likelihood of enduring chronic violence and women’s awareness of early indicators of violence risk, their initial responses to aggression, communication skills, and recurrent behaviors in the context of an established violent dynamic. This study offers valuable insights for law enforcement to identify the risk of revictimization. Furthermore, findings raise awareness about the particularly vulnerable situation of some women to repeated victimization experiences and provide relevant information for clinical intervention.

This study analyzes the productivity of grasslands in a Mediterranean oak-savanna ecosystem, focusing on its linkages with water availability. In these water-controlled ecosystems, grassland environmental preservation and sustainable management depend on quantitatively understanding these links. Productivity and water stress were modeled in southern Spain (2001–2018), integrating meteorological information and MODIS sensor data into a light-use efficiency model and a surface energy balance. The results provided valuable insights into how grasslands behaved during droughts at different spatiotemporal scales. During the most significant droughts, 2004/2005 and 2011/2012, aerial biomass production was reduced by 42 % and 67 %, respectively. The spatial analysis identified the central east side of the region, with low slopes and moderate tree cover, as the most productive area. The biomass production time series classification identified four distinct trends, all showing shifted relationships with similar slopes between production and anomalies of relative evapotranspiration. The seasonal analysis highlighted the importance of autumn, accounting for nearly 30 % of the annual biomass production, which was essential in years with spring water deficits. The proposed methodology provides on-farm grassland production curves depending on water availability (max-mean-min range with a mean error of 15.5 %). Together with weather forecast data, this could help farmers decide on the optimal level of management intensification and stocking rate. Although the regional specificity may limit the study’s direct applicability, this scheme offers valuable metrics that could be adapted to other areas under water scarcity conditions.

IL-23 is a cytokine produced by myeloid cells that drives the T helper 17 pathway and plays an essential role in the pathophysiology of plaque psoriasis. IL-23 activation initiates a cascade of cytokines subsequently inducing the expression of many psoriasis-related proteins. This study aimed to better understand the underlying mechanisms driving the differences between IL-23 and IL-17A blockade in patients with psoriasis and their implications for durability of clinical responses. Serum and/or skin biopsies were isolated from patients treated with guselkumab or secukinumab for evaluation of potential biomarkers of pharmacodynamic response to treatment. Guselkumab treatment led to significantly greater reductions of IL-17F and IL-22 serum levels than treatment with secukinumab at weeks 24 and 48, demonstrating sustained regulation of the IL-23/T helper 17 pathway. Analyses of proteomic and transcriptomic profiles of patient sera and skin biopsies demonstrated differential regulation of proteins involved in chemokine, TNF, and relevant immune signaling pathways to a greater degree with guselkumab than with secukinumab treatment. These data provide insights into the differences between the mechanisms and impact of IL-23 and IL-17A blockade in psoriasis, with implications for efficacy observations and treatment paradigms. Background: Psoriasis is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease characterized by activation of IL-23–driven IL-17–producing T cell and other IL-23 receptor–positive IL-17–producing cell responses. Selective blockade of IL-23p19 with guselkumab was superior to blockade of TNF-α with adalimumab (ADA) in treating moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Objective: Pharmacodynamic responses of guselkumab versus ADA were compared in patients with psoriasis in VOYAGE 1. Design: Inflammatory cytokine serum levels were assessed (n = 118), and lesional and nonlesional skin biopsies were collected (n = 38) in patient subsets at baseline and 4, 24, and 48 weeks after treatment to evaluate pharmacodynamic responses of guselkumab versus those of ADA. Results: Guselkumab provided rapid reductions in serum IL-17A, IL-17F, and IL-22 levels by week 4 versus at baseline, which were maintained through weeks 24 and 48 (P < .001). The magnitude of reduction of IL-17A and IL-22 at week 48 and IL-17F at weeks 4, 24, and 48 were greater with guselkumab than with ADA (all P < .05). In the skin, guselkumab reduced the expression of IL-23/IL-17 pathway–associated and psoriasis-associated genes. Conclusion: These data provide extensive characterization of pharmacodynamic anti-inflammatory responses to IL-23p19 and TNF-α inhibition in human blood and tissue over time with FDA-approved doses of guselkumab and ADA. Cancer-associated thrombosis is a common problem in cancer patients and one of the leading causes of death in this population. Randomised clinical trials have shown that both low-molecular-weight heparins and direct oral anticoagulants are the treatments of choice for cancer-associated thrombosis. Despite this, small sample sizes, poor representation of some patient subgroups and lack of information about real-world clinical situations are some of the limitations of randomised trials. To overcome these problems, registries have been established to collect real-world data from patients with cancer-associated thrombosis, offering new evidence and information to supplement the findings of randomised clinical trials. However, few registries have focused exclusively on cancer patients, and some have excluded various subgroups of patients. Additionally, data collection and processing are another major challenge in analysing registry results, where the emergence of artificial intelligence will play a fundamental role.

Abstract Serpentinites are major carriers of volatiles in deep subduction zones, releasing most fluids in the 500–650°C range. Despite fundamental implications for mass transfer and intermediate‐depth seismicity, the mechanical role of these fluids is unclear. To characterize the mechanical role of fluids at (ultra)high‐pressure conditions, we perform a petro‐structural analysis on olivine‐rich veins from the Western Alps meta‐ophiolite. Some veins formed through dilational and mixed dilational‐shear fracturing without significant shear‐related deformation. However, field and microstructural observations indicate transient shearing and dilational fracturing at high pore fluid pressures. These include: (a) foliated sheared veins; (b) newly formed olivine and Ti‐clinohumite within mineral lineations coating sheared veins and shear bands; (c) Olivine and Ti‐clinohumite mineral fibers sealing porphyroclasts; (d) mutual crosscutting relationships among dilational and shear features. Dilational veins prevail in low‐strain areas, while sheared veins and shear bands dominate within high‐strain zones toward the ultramafic sliver boundaries. These strain variations underscore the role of local stress regimes during serpentinite dehydration. Consequently, areas experiencing stronger shear stresses around large‐scale blocks or mechanical weakening during fluid circulation are prone to draining overpressurized fluids. These interface‐parallel and fracture‐controlled pathways thus facilitate fluid escape from the dehydrating downgoing slab. Transient events of dilational fracturing and brittle‐ductile shearing, along with strain localization in highly comminuted olivine‐bearing sheared veins, may have resulted from strain rate bursts potentially related to (sub)seismic deformation. These observations are in line with geophysical data indicating high pore fluid pressures within the intermediate‐depth seismicity region.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an excellent diffuse reflector widely used in light collection systems for particle physics experiments. In noble element systems, it is often coated with tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB) to allow detection of vacuum ultraviolet scintillation light. In this work this dependence is investigated for PTFE coated with TPB in air for light of wavelengths of 200 nm, 260 nm, and 450 nm. The results show that TPB-coated PTFE has a reflectance of approximately 92% for thicknesses ranging from 5 mm to 10 mm at 450 nm, with negligible variation as a function of thickness within this range. A cross-check of these results using an argon chamber supports the conclusion that the change in thickness from 5 mm to 10 mm does not affect significantly the light response at 128 nm. Our results indicate that pieces of TPB-coated PTFE thinner than the typical 10 mm can be used in particle physics detectors without compromising the light signal.

In Mediterranean oak-savannas (known as dehesas in Spain), it is important to better understand the interactions between vegetation structure and local climate regulation at scales relevant to farm management and the dominant hydrological regime. This study evaluated the water use patterns of dehesa vegetation patches (open grasslands, lowland grasslands with high soil moisture, tree + grass, and riparian vegetation), estimating actual evapotranspiration (ET). We used different models, previously validated in the area, that integrate remotely sensed data. They apply (a) a soil water balance (Kc-FAO56), (b) a surface energy balance (ALEXI/DisALEXI, and SEBS), and (c) a sharpening algorithm (STARFM), obtaining products at multiple spatial resolutions (30 m, 1 km, 5 km). The conceptual and operational differences between the methodologies reinforce the idea of a combined application of models. We demonstrated the need for high spatial and temporal resolution for on-farm livestock management due to the importance of the grasslands layer. This scale is crucial to determine the grass's emergence/drying cycle, which is key for livestock feeding planning. In humid/denser areas that provide essential ecosystem services (e.g., refuge, pasture rotation), transpiration rates are higher throughout the year and were underestimated when coarser spatial scale data was used. Over the typical system (grass with dispersed trees), the ET maps at low spatial resolution reflected the water use trends, and all models correlated well. Higher differences were found when comparing the models' performance over open grasslands.

Educational content has become a key element for improving the quality and effectiveness of teaching. Many studies have been conducted on user and knowledge modeling using machine-learning algorithms in smart-learning environments. However, few studies have focused on content modeling to estimate content indicators based on student interaction. This study presents a systematic literature review of content modeling using machine learning algorithms in smart learning environments. Two databases were used: Scopus and Web of Science (WoS), with studies conducted until August 2023. In addition, a manual search was performed at conferences and in relevant journals in the area. The results showed that assessment was the most used content in the papers, with difficulty and discrimination as the most common indicators. Item Response Theory (IRT) is the most commonly used technique; however, some studies have used different traditional learning algorithms such as Random Forest, Neural Networks, and Regression. Other indicators, such as time, grade, and number of attempts, were also estimated. Owing to the few studies on content modeling using machine learning algorithms based on interactions, this study presents new lines of research based on the results obtained in the literature review.

Digital technologies enable a thorough analysis of Architectural Heritage, offering various representations that provide different levels of documentation and knowledge-based conservation tools. This paper presents a methodological approach that leverages three digital representations related to three levels of documentation: Virtual Tour Informational Modelling, Point Cloud Informational Modelling, and Historical Building Information Modelling. Their characteristics and potential are compared, focusing on the effectiveness in supporting the analysis process, and the management of future conservation works. Furthermore, the dichotomy between 2D and 3D representations of AH is tackled, emphasizing the need to align with the conservation strategies, timeline, and budget constraints. It also discusses the integration of heterogeneous data and various digital representations to address the challenges in AH preventive conservation and management, resulting in the proposal of a sustainable documentation workflow to support the conservation process.

Radio-frequency (RF) carpets with ultra-fine pitches are examined for ion transport in gases at atmospheric pressures and above. We develop new analytic and computational methods for modeling RF ion transport at densities where dynamics are strongly influenced by buffer gas collisions. An analytic description of levitating and sweeping forces from phased arrays is obtained, then thermodynamic and kinetic principles are used to calculate ion loss rates in the presence of collisions. This methodology is validated against detailed microscopic SIMION simulations. We then explore a parameter space of special interest for neutrinoless double beta decay experiments: transport of barium ions in xenon at pressures from 1 to 10 bar. Our computations account for molecular ion formation and pressure dependent mobility as well as finite temperature effects. We discuss the challenges associated with achieving suitable operating conditions, which lie beyond the capabilities of existing devices, using presently available or near-future manufacturing techniques.

Atmospheric reanalyses combine observations and models through data assimilation techniques to provide spatio-temporally continuous fields of key surface variables. They can do so for extended historical periods whilst ensuring a coherent representation of the main Earth system cycles. ERA5 and its enhanced land surface component, ERA5-Land, are widely used in Earth system science and form the flagship products of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) of the European Commission. Such land surface modelling frameworks generally rely on a state variable called leaf area index (LAI), representing the number of leaves in a grid cell at a given time, to quantify the fluxes of carbon, water and energy between the vegetation and the atmosphere. However, the LAI within the modelling framework behind ERA5 and ERA5-Land is prescribed as a climatological seasonal cycle, neglecting any interannual variability and the potential consequences that this uncoupling between vegetation and atmosphere may have on the surface energy balance and the climate. To evaluate the impact of this mismatch in LAI, we analyse the corresponding effect it has on land surface temperature (LST) by comparing what is simulated to satellite observations. We characterise a hysteretic behaviour between LST biases and LAI biases that evolves differently along the year depending on the background climate. We further analyse the repercussions for the reconstructed climate during more extreme conditions in terms of LAI deviations, with a specific focus on the 2003, 2010 and 2018 heat waves in Europe for which LST mismatches are exacerbated. We anticipate that our results will assist users of ERA5 and ERA5-Land data in understanding where and when the larger discrepancies can be expected, but also guide developers towards improving the modelling framework. Finally, this study could provide a blueprint for a wider benchmarking framework for land surface model evaluation that exploits the capacity of LST to integrate the effects of both radiative and non-radiative processes affecting the surface energy.

This review updates the different categories and formulations of the calculation of longshore sediment transport (LST) and summarizes their advantages and disadvantages. Most of these methodologies require calibration for areas different from those studied by their authors. Thus, a method of validation and calibration is presented here by processing satellite images with CoastSat software (release v 2.7) to determine accretion and erosion volumes. This low-cost methodology was applied to Salaverry Beach (Peru) to compare the results of the different formulations. A range of variation between −96% and +68% was observed concerning the error, with van Rijn’s formula being the most accurate for this particular case.

Copper contamination of natural waters is a global problem that affects ecosystems and public health, yet this metal is an essential micronutrient and has important applications. The efficacy of Staphylococcus epidermidis CECT 4183 as a Cu(II) biosorbent in synthetic solutions and its potential ability to synthesize CuO nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) from its cellular extract was investigated. In addition, the biocidal potential of the nanoparticles was evaluated against five microorganisms. Using response surface methodology, the optimal operating conditions were determined to be biomass dose, 0.2 g/L, and pH 5.5. Equilibrium tests were performed, and biosorption isotherms were obtained for four models with a maximum biosorption capacity of 48.14 mg/g for the Langmuir model. Different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were used to determine the mechanisms involved in the biosorption process, which was dominated by surface physicochemical interactions with strong involvement of methyl, methylene, carbonyl, amino, and phosphate groups. The techniques also allowed for characterizing the obtained nanoparticles, which had a quasi-spherical morphology and an average size of 14 nm. Finally, biocidal tests showed that the CuO-NPs had a good inhibitory capacity for the microorganisms tested, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) between 62.5 and 500 µg/mL for bacteria and between 1000 and 2000 µg/mL for yeasts. S. epidermidis CECT 4183 showed good potential for Cu(II) bioremediation and for the synthesis of CuO-NPs with biocidal capacity. S. epidermidis CECT 4183 showed good potential for use in Cu(II) biosorption, and its cell extract presented a high capacity for the green synthesis of CuO-NPs, which at the same time turned out to be good biocidal agents.

We report a measurement of the half-life of the Xe136 two-neutrino double-β decay performed with a novel direct-background-subtraction technique. The analysis relies on the data collected with the NEXT-White detector operated with Xe136-enriched and Xe136-depleted xenon, as well as on the topology of double-electron tracks. With a fiducial mass of only 3.5 kg of Xe, a half-life of 2.34-0.46+0.80(stat)-0.17+0.30(sys)×1021yr is derived from the background-subtracted energy spectrum. The presented technique demonstrates the feasibility of unique background-model-independent neutrinoless double-β-decay searches.

We present evidence of non-excimer-based secondary scintillation in gaseous xenon, obtained using both the NEXT-White time projection chamber (TPC) and a dedicated setup. Detailed comparison with first-principle calculations allows us to assign this scintillation mechanism to neutral bremsstrahlung (NBrS), a process that is postulated to exist in xenon that has been largely overlooked. For photon emission below 1000 nm, the NBrS yield increases from about 10-2 photon/e- cm-1 bar-1 at pressure-reduced electric field values of 50 V cm-1 bar-1 to above 3×10-1 photon/e- cm-1 bar-1 at 500 V cm-1 bar-1. Above 1.5 kV cm-1 bar-1, values that are typically employed for electroluminescence, it is estimated that NBrS is present with an intensity around 1 photon/e- cm-1 bar-1, which is about 2 orders of magnitude lower than conventional, excimer-based electroluminescence. Despite being fainter than its excimeric counterpart, our calculations reveal that NBrS causes luminous backgrounds that can interfere, in either gas or liquid phase, with the ability to distinguish and/or to precisely measure low primary-scintillation signals (S1). In particular, we show this to be the case in the "buffer"region, where keeping the electric field below the electroluminescence threshold does not suffice to extinguish secondary scintillation. The electric field leakage in this region should be mitigated to avoid intolerable levels of NBrS emission. Furthermore, we show that this new source of light emission opens up a viable path toward obtaining S2 signals for discrimination purposes in future single-phase liquid TPCs for neutrino and dark matter physics, with estimated yields up to 20-50 photons/e- cm-1.

Abstract The NEXT experiment aims at the sensitive search of the neutrinoless double beta decay in 136Xe, using high-pressure gas electroluminescent time projection chambers. The NEXT-White detector is the first radiopure demonstrator of this technology, operated in the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc. Achieving an energy resolution of 1% FWHM at 2.6 MeV and further background rejection by means of the topology of the reconstructed tracks, NEXT-White has been exploited beyond its original goals in order to perform a neu- trinoless double beta decay search. The analysis considers the combination of 271.6 days of 136Xe-enriched data and 208.9 days of 136Xe-depleted data. A detailed background modeling and measurement has been developed, ensuring the time stability of the radiogenic and cosmogenic contributions across both data samples. Limits to the neutrinoless mode are obtained in two alternative analyses: a background-model-dependent approach and a novel direct background-subtraction technique, offering results with small dependence on the background model assumptions. With a fiducial mass of only 3.50 ± 0.01 kg of 136Xe-enriched xenon, 90% C.L. lower limits to the neutrinoless double beta decay are found in the T 1 / 2 0 ν $$ {T}_{1/2}^{0\nu } $$ > 5.5 × 1023 − 1.3 × 1024 yr range, depending on the method. The presented techniques stand as a proof-of-concept for the searches to be implemented with larger NEXT detectors.

The research sought to evaluate the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of the study area located in the province of Tayacaja, which includes the districts of Acraquia, Ahuaycha, Pampas and Daniel Hernández, which is part of the central Andes of Peru. The data were collected in low water seasons with a longitudinal cut of 30 years with one sample per year, starting in 1993 until 2022; these samples corresponded to the month of August of each year. The images were extracted from maps from Landsat satellite databases, which were filtered for low cloud cover to avoid interference with the images. Maps from 1993 to 2012 were obtained from Landsat 5 satellite, while from 2013 to 2022 data were obtained from Landsat 8 satellite. The normalized difference vegetation index was determined using Quantum GIS based on the red and near infrared maps; being the minimum NDVI value obtained -0.18, which corresponds to the aquatic body of the Upamayu River that crosses from west to east the study area; while the highest NDVI obtained was 0.79 indicating a greater vegetation cover constituted by mainly eucalyptus plants. The mean NDVI of the 30 years is close to 0.21; this is an indicator that the vegetation is scarce and that it is decreasing mainly due to population growth.

AbstractWe expound on a hydrographic and geophysical survey in the south of the Archipelago of San Andres, Providencia, and Santa Catalina (ASAPSC) in the Colombian Caribbean Sea. In 2017 and 2018, high-resolution data were acquired from the Caribbean Center for Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research (CIOH). The hydrographic data were processed and filtered per International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) standards and the geomagnetic data were processed, corrected, and filtered to improve the interpretation. We could then characterise the submarine relief, analyse the geomagnetic anomalies in the area, and identify different relief forms of volcanic origin. Regarding geomagnetic work, a spectral analysis of the anomalies revealed highly magnetic bodies in deep water and residual magnetic anomalies strongly related to the seabed morphology. Magnetic highs associated with the basement highs and volcanic cones were detected. Complementary spectral analysis showed that the shallowest magnetic sources were in the first 500 m, whereas the deepest magnetic sources were between the depths of 4 and 5 km. The geomagnetic data were also validated using Euler deconvolution analysis, which confirmed these magnetic anomalies. Thus, a direct relationship between the magnetic anomalies and bathymetry of the seafloor was confirmed, reinforcing the theory of the volcanic origin of these islands.

Inertial devices allow for obtaining a large amount of information related to external load during official competitions. The study aimed to analyse fatigue in different functional classification players of a Football 7-a-side for people with cerebral palsy or acquired brain injury team, considering the movements, speed changes and impacts during the 2020 Spanish National League matches (n = 12). The analyzed independent variables were the different functional classifications (FC) of the players, FC1, FC2 and FC3, and also time. Regarding the dependent variables, kinematic objective external load (displacements and speed changes), and neuromuscular objective external load (impacts) were considered. This study is an empirical investigation that follows an associative and descriptive analysis, ANOVA test, and a Bonferroni post hoc test (multiple comparisons) were carried out between the external load variables based on FC and time. The results show differences between FC1 for people with greater functional limitation to FC3, and athletes with less functional limitation depending on the time of the match. FC2 players presented greater competitive demands in specific moments of the match than FC3 athletes because of the requirements of the competition. Furthermore, evaluating different FC players with inertial devices in official competitions provides useful information regarding the demands of Fa7PC players, which is fundamental for daily training tasks management and injury risk prevention in Fa7PC. The large number of variables associated with inertial devices data collection during training sessions and official competitions in Fa7PC allows us to understand the demands of CP players, as well as how to make decisions during the games and training process, namely for reducing the injury risk.

When initial sample information falls short of enabling industrial engineers to confidently make decisions about lot quality assessment, repetitive sampling emerges as a solution. In this study, we present an optimized repetitive sampling control chart for X-bar values. Through meticulous analysis, we determined the optimal control chart coefficients. Additionally, we established the control chart parameters for scenarios where the sample size equals the average sample number, encompassing both in-control and out-of-control processes. To underscore the effectiveness of our proposed chart compared to the traditional Shewhart control chart, we provide comprehensive tables across various sample sizes. By meticulously examining these tables alongside the corresponding control charts, the chart's efficacy in relation to the Shewhart alternative becomes evident.
