Search

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on Machine Learning, and one on Spectroscopy of Light Meson Resonances. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. In this introductory article, the authors discuss the topic of social constructions of space by deconstructing what are widely referred to in academic studies as hegemonic narratives. In order to introduce a collection of articles critically, however, the authors pay special attention to the ways in which academic studies have traditionally historicised cultural, political and geographical spaces and have therefore played a role in spatial interpretations of nationalism, sovereignty, and territory. References to research findings and observations presented by an interdisciplinary cohort of scholars during a symposium held at Durham University’s Institute for Advanced Studies provide the context for this article. To this end, the authors expand the scope of three of these presentations - comprising a collection of articles exploring nationalism, sovereignty, and territory - and extract common research findings before proceeding to engage more critically with questions about how the various participating disciplines understand space in the context of knowledge and power. The authors conclude that hegemonic narratives relate to individual past, present, and future contexts, as well as to the ways in which academics, politicians, and the wider public interpret them. In conclusion, the authors demonstrate how the relationship between knowledge about space on one hand, and power to construct or interpret space(s) on the other, provides ample opportunity for discussion across disciplines.

We give a progress report on a project aimed at a high-precision calculation of the decay constants $f_B$ and $$f_{B_s}$$ from simulations with HISQ heavy and light valence and sea quarks. Calculations are carried out with several heavy valence-quark masses on ensembles with 2+1+1 flavors of HISQ sea quarks at five lattice spacings and several light sea-quark mass ratios $$m_{ud}/m_s$$, including approximately physical sea-quark masses. This range of parameters provides excellent control of the continuum limit and of heavy-quark discretization errors. We present a preliminary error budget with projected uncertainties of 2.2~MeV and 1.5~MeV for $f_B$ and $$f_{B_s}$$, respectively.

Cardiac repolarization is regulated, in part, by the KCNH2 gene, which encodes a rapidly activating component of the delayed rectifier potassium channel. The gene expresses a functional single nucleotide polymorphism, K897T, which changes the biophysical properties of the channel. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether this polymorphism influences two indices of repolarization--the QT interval and T-wave alternans (TWA)--during different phases of a physical exercise test.The cohort consisted of 1,975 patients undergoing an exercise test during which on-line electrocardiographic data were registered. Information on coronary risk factors and medication was recorded. The 2690AC nucleotide variation in the KCNH2 gene corresponding to the K897T amino acid change was analysed after polymerase chain reaction with allele-specific TaqMan probes.Among all subjects, the QTc intervals did not differ between the three genotype groups (por =0.31, RANOVA). Women with the CC genotype tended to have longer QT intervals during the exercise test, but the difference was statistically significant only at rest (p = 0.011, ANOVA). This difference was also detected when the analysis was adjusted for several factors influencing the QT interval. No statistically significant effects of the K897T polymorphism on TWA were observed among all subjects (p = 0.16, RANOVA), nor in men and women separately.The K897T polymorphism of the KCNH2 gene may not be a major genetic determinant for the TWA, but the influence of the CC genotype on QT interval deserves further research among women.

The aim of this study was to derive new spirometric reference equations for the English population, using the 1995/1996 Health Survey for England, a large nationally representative cross-sectional study. The measurements used were the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) of a sample of 6,053 "healthy" (nonsmokers with no reported diagnosis of asthma or respiratory symptoms) White people aged > or = 16 yrs. Multiple regression analysis, with age and height as predictors, was carried out to estimate prediction equations for mean FEV1, FVC and FEV1/FVC, separately for males and females. A method based on smoothing multiple estimates of the fifth percentiles of residuals was used to derive prediction equations for the lower limit of normal lung function. The new equations fit the current English adult population considerably better than the European Coal and Steel Community equations, and the proportions of people with "low" (below the fifth percentile) lung function are closer to those expected throughout the whole adult age range (16 to > 75 yrs). For the age ranges the studies share in common, the new equations give estimates close to those derived from other nonlinear equations in recent studies. It is, therefore, suggested that these newly developed prediction equations be used for the White English population in both epidemiological studies and clinical practice.

Quenching effects in strong penguin matrix elements are investigated. A lattice determination of $��_q^{NS}$, the constant that appears in the quenched ChPT relevant for the lattice analysis of $K\to����$ matrix elements, shows that this constant is large. The original RBC analysis of $Q_6$ matrix elements is revisited in light of this result. We calculate the kaon semileptonic form factor f+(0) from lattice QCD, working, for the first time, at the physical light-quark masses. We use gauge configurations generated by the MILC Collaboration with Nf = 2 + 1 + 1 flavors of sea quarks, which incorporate the effects of dynamical charm quarks as well as those of up, down, and strange. We employ data at three lattice spacings to extrapolate to the continuum limit. Our result, f+(0) = 0.9704(32), where the error is the total statistical plus systematic uncertainty added in quadrature, is the most precise determination to date. Combining our result with the latest experimental measurements of K semileptonic decays, one obtains the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V(us)| = 0.22290(74)(52), where the first error is from f+(0) and the second one is from experiment. In the first-row test of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity, the error stemming from |V(us)| is now comparable to that from |V(ud)|.

A calculation of the ratio of leptonic decay constants f(K+)/f(π+) makes possible a precise determination of the ratio of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements |V(us)|/|V(ud)| in the standard model, and places a stringent constraint on the scale of new physics that would lead to deviations from unitarity in the first row of the CKM matrix. We compute f(K+)/f(π+) numerically in unquenched lattice QCD using gauge-field ensembles recently generated that include four flavors of dynamical quarks: up, down, strange, and charm. We analyze data at four lattice spacings a ≈ 0.06, 0.09, 0.12, and 0.15 fm with simulated pion masses down to the physical value 135 MeV. We obtain f(K+)/f(π+) = 1.1947(26)(37), where the errors are statistical and total systematic, respectively. This is our first physics result from our N(f) = 2+1+1 ensembles, and the first calculation of f(K+)/f(π+) from lattice-QCD simulations at the physical point. Our result is the most precise lattice-QCD determination of f(K+)/f(π+), with an error comparable to the current world average. When combined with experimental measurements of the leptonic branching fractions, it leads to a precise determination of |V(us)|/|V(ud)| = 0.2309(9)(4) where the errors are theoretical and experimental, respectively.

+ (0) on the asqtad Nf = 2+ 1 MILC configurations, discuss the chiral-continuum extrapolation, and give a preliminary estimate of the total error. We also present a more preliminary set of results for the same form factor but with the sea quarks also simulated with the HISQ action; these results include data at the physical light quark masses. The improvements that we expect to achieve with the use of the HISQ configu rations and simulations at the physical quark masses are briefly discussed.

We calculate form-factor ratios between the semileptonic decays {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +} {ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}} and {bar B}{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} D{sub s}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}} with lattice QCD. These ratios are a key theoretical input in a new strategy to determine the fragmentation fractions of the neutral B decays, which are needed for measurements of BR(B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}). They use the MILC ensembles of gauge configurations with 2 + 1 flavors of sea quarks at two lattice spacings of approximately 0.12 fm and 0.09 fm. We use the model-independent z parametrization to extrapolate their simulation results at small recoil toward maximum recoil. The results for the form-factor ratios are {line_integral}{sub 0}{sup (s)} (M{sub {pi}}{sup 2})/{line_integral}{sub 0}{sup (d)} (M{sub K}{sup 2}) = 1.046(44){sub stat.}(15){sub syst.} and {line_integral}{sub 0}{sup (s)} (M{sub {pi}}{sup 2})/{line_integral}{sub 0}{sup (d)} (M{sub {pi}}{sup 2}) = 1.054(47){sub stat.}(17){sub syst.}. In contrast to a QCD sum-rule calculation, no significant departure from U-spin (d {leftrightarrow} s) symmetry is observed.

We report the non-perturbative tuning of parameters--- kappa_c, kappa_b, and kappa_crit ---that determine the heavy-quark mass in the Fermilab action. This requires the computation of the masses of Ds^(*) and Bs^(*) mesons comprised of a Fermilab heavy quark and a staggered light quark. Additionally, we report the hyperfine splittings for Ds and Bs mesons as a cross-check of our simulation and analysis methods. We find a splitting of 145 +/- 15 MeV for the Ds system and 40 +/- 9 MeV for the Bs system. These are in good agreement with the Particle Data Group average values of 143.9 +/- 0.4 MeV and 46.1 +/- 1.5 MeV, respectively. The calculations are carried out with the MILC 2+1 flavor gauge configurations at three lattice spacings $a$ approximately 0.15, 0.12, and 0.09 fm., 34 pages, 8 figures, 26 tables; some sections rearranged for clarity; conclusions unchanged; version accepted by Phys. Rev.D

We study the lattice spacing dependence, or scaling, of physical quantities using the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action introduced by the HPQCD/UKQCD Collaboration, comparing our results to similar simulations with the asqtad fermion action. Results are based on calculations with lattice spacings approximately 0.15, 0.12, and 0.09 fm, using four flavors of dynamical HISQ quarks. The strange and charm quark masses are near their physical values, and the light-quark mass is set to 0.2 times the strange-quark mass. We look at the lattice spacing dependence of hadron masses, pseudoscalar meson decay constants, and the topological susceptibility. In addition to the commonly used determination of the lattice spacing through the static quark potential, we examine a determination proposed by the HPQCD Collaboration that uses the decay constant of a fictitious ''unmixed ss'' pseudoscalar meson. We find that the lattice artifacts in the HISQ simulations are much smaller than those in the asqtad simulations at the same lattice spacings and quark masses.

We present the status of the MILC collaboration’s analysis of the light pseudoscalar meson sector with SU(3) chiral fits. The analysis includes data from new ensembles with smaller lattice spacing, smaller light quark masses and lighter than physical strange quark masses. Ourfits include the NNLO chiral logarithms. We present results for decay constants, quark masses, Gasser-Leutwyler low energy constants, and condensates in the two- and three-flavor chiral limits. We present our new results for the QCD equation of state at nonzero chemical potential at N_t=6 and compare them with N_t=4. We use the Taylor expansion method with terms up to sixth order in simulations with 2+1 flavors of improved asqtad quarks along a line of constant physics with m_l=0.1 m_s and approximately physical strange quark mass m_s.

We calculate the form factor ${f}_{+}({q}^{2})$ for $B$-meson semileptonic decay in unquenched lattice QCD with $2+1$ flavors of light sea quarks. We use Asqtad-improved staggered light quarks and a Fermilab bottom quark on gauge configurations generated by the MILC Collaboration. We simulate with several light-quark masses and at two lattice spacings, and extrapolate to the physical quark mass and continuum limit using heavy-light meson staggered chiral perturbation theory. We then fit the lattice result for ${f}_{+}({q}^{2})$ simultaneously with that measured by the BABAR experiment using a parameterization of the form-factor shape in ${q}^{2}$, which relies only on analyticity and unitarity in order to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|{V}_{\mathrm{ub}}|$. This approach reduces the total uncertainty in $|{V}_{\mathrm{ub}}|$ by combining the lattice and experimental information in an optimal, model-independent manner. We find a value of $|{V}_{\mathrm{ub}}|\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{3}=3.38\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.36$.

We present the first lattice QCD calculation of the form factor for $\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{*}\ensuremath{\ell}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ with three flavors of sea quarks. We use an improved staggered action for the light valence and sea quarks (the MILC configurations), and the Fermilab action for the heavy quarks. The form factor is computed at zero recoil using a new double ratio method that yields the form factor more directly than the previous Fermilab method. Other improvements over the previous calculation include the use of much lighter light-quark masses, and the use of lattice (staggered) chiral perturbation theory in order to control the light-quark discretization errors and chiral extrapolation. We obtain for the form factor, ${\mathcal{F}}_{B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{*}}(1)=0.921(13)(20)$, where the first error is statistical and the second is the sum of all systematic errors in quadrature. Applying a 0.7% electromagnetic correction and taking the latest PDG average for ${\mathcal{F}}_{B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{*}}(1)|{V}_{cb}|$ leads to $|{V}_{cb}|=(38.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.9}_{\mathrm{exp} }\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{1.0}_{\mathrm{theo}})\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$.

Comparisons of lattice-QCD calculations of semileptonic form factors with experimental measurements often display two sets of points, one each for lattice QCD and experiment. Here we propose to display the output of a lattice-QCD analysis as a curve and error band. This is justified, because lattice-QCD results rely in part on fitting, both for the chiral extrapolation and to extend lattice-QCD data over the full physically allowed kinematic domain. To display an error band, correlations in the fit parameters must be taken into account. For the statistical error, the correlation comes from the fit. To illustrate how to address correlations in the systematic errors, we use the Becirevic-Kaidalov parametrization of the D -> pi l nu and D -> K l nu form factors, and a analyticity-based fit for the B -> pi l nu form factor f_+., 6 pp; v2 conforms with published version (one additional sentence and reference to clarify a point)

We calculate results for $K\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}$ and $K\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ matrix elements to next-to-leading order in $2+1$ flavor partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. Results are presented for both the $\ensuremath{\Delta}I=1/2$ and $3/2$ channels, for chiral operators corresponding to current-current, gluonic penguin, and electroweak penguin 4-quark operators. These formulas are useful for studying the chiral behavior of currently available $2+1$ flavor lattice QCD results, from which the low-energy constants of the chiral effective theory can be determined. The low-energy constants of these matrix elements are necessary for an understanding of the $\ensuremath{\Delta}I=1/2$ rule, and for calculations of ${ϵ}^{\ensuremath{'}}/ϵ$ using current lattice QCD simulations.

A concern-based approach to support software comprehension and analysis is proposed. Concerns represent various aspects of a system, like features, architectural solutions, units of work, etc., which are interesting for some stakeholders. Using concern-based queries on the software artefacts, new derived information on the system can be exposed. The results of the queries are also represented as concerns and added to the concern repository. The approach thus supports the analyzer in gradually building up an understanding on the subject system to be analyzed.

The third-generation cellular systems will offer services with higher bit rates compared to today's networks and therefore for an operator it is of the utmost importance to exploit all possible resources to improve the capacity of the radio network. One attractive possibility, already used in most of the second-generation networks, is to increase the sectorisation at the base stations, i.e., using 3 or even up to 6 sectors per site. In this paper we demonstrate with simulations and some theoretical derivation how the sectorisation of the base stations influences the performance (capacity and quality of service) of a WCDMA radio network. In addition the simulator and the modelling of the third generation's fast power control and soft handover are presented.

A diversity handover simulator using measured propagation data is introduced. Furthermore, three different diversity handover algorithms are compared and the comparison results are introduced in this paper. The algorithms used in the study were the basic cdmaOne algorithm, modified cdmaOne algorithm and an algorithm with a threshold relative to the strongest received pilot channel Ec/Io. The most stable performance in terms of diversity handover (DHO) probability can be achieved with the slope algorithm. The basic cdmaOne algorithm tends to be very sensitive to the interference situation. The algorithm, which makes the decision based on the relative differences of the received pilot Ec/Io levels, rather than on absolute thresholds, shows moderate change in both the active set update period and in the DHO probability in changing interference conditions.

The third-generation cellular systems will offer services well beyond the capabilities of today's networks. For an operator to provide the maximum capacity of the network supporting multiple traffic mixes more advanced analysis methods are required. The scope of this paper is to demonstrate with simulations how the subscriber profile (mobile station speed and the used service) impact on the network capacity and quality of service. Furthermore, the simulator used in the study is described, the uplink and downlink iterations and the fast power control and soft handover modeling are briefly introduced.

The scope of this paper is to demonstrate the impact of the soft handover on the WCDMA network performance. The gains from the selection combining and increased diversity in uplink soft handover of a WCDMA system have been studied with the help of link level simulations. Two base stations have been included in the simulation model. The average required transmitted and received E/sub b//I/sub 0/ ensuring the desired quality has been measured as a function of the level difference between the two base stations. This has been done for two multipath propagation channels and several mobile station (MS) speeds. In addition, the paper discusses how the soft handover reduces the required power control headroom near the cell edge.

A static radio network simulator for studying various topics of 3rd generation WCDMA radio network planning is presented. The simulator allows analyzing coverage, capacity and quality of service related issues. Input to the simulator is the network scenario and the user information as a mobile station map. The uplink and downlink are separately analyzed and the outputs are presented in form of maps of best server, number of users, served traffic, SHO areas, AS size, SHO statistics for the area and for the users, Perch C/I plots. In the analysis, impact of the 3rd generations fast power control and soft(er) handover (SHO) possibility are taken into account by importing link level simulations into the analyses. The whole simulator is entirely based on Matlab(R) software.

The paper evaluates experimentally the most important parameters of the two-dimensional (2D) propagation environment. For this purpose, measurements with both fixed and rotating base station (BS) antenna arrays were performed. With a fixed array installation, environmental parameters, such as effective side lobe level (ESL) and cross polarisation discrimination (XPD) were evaluated. With the rotating BS antenna path angular spread (PAS), total angular spread values and the two-dimensional channel impulse responses (2D-CIR) were recorded. Two BS sites were used. With the measured data a simple beam pointing algorithm was tested and the number of receiving beams needed in different measured locations for optimum reception was estimated. With the measured 2D data simple 2D-RAKE allocation routines were done related to a CDMA-SDMA application.

In 3/sup rd/ generation cellular systems using WCDMA radio access technology (RAT) one operator could theoretically operate it's network by using only one frequency when another operator in the same area uses the immediate adjacent frequency. Then, on contrary to other systems, the adjacent channel interference (ACI) is coming entirely from another operator. Since most likely the network plans will be completely independent, the only means to combat this ACI is applying appropriate filters. This paper shows results on a study of the influence of 2 macro operators using WCDMA RAT in the same area in adjacent channels, by applying the filter values specified in 3GPP TS 25.101and 3GPP TS 25.104 . Two cases, one from an urban and one from a suburban area are shown. Example results on outage, coverage probabilities, quality of service, transmit power distributions etc. are presented with and without the second operator present and compared with each other. In conclusion of the comparison it is shown, that in macro cellular scenarios the influence of both operators on each other is negligible.

A simple method is derived for estimating the downlink capacity and required base station transmission power in a WCDMA system. This is based on a downlink pole equation which is mostly similar with the well known CDMA uplink pole equation. It is shown that the total downlink transmission power is composed of two terms. The first term is equal to what would be needed in the absence of interference and the second one shows the increase due to multiple access interference which is inversely proportional to 1-/spl eta//sub DL/ where /spl eta//sub DL/ is called the downlink loading. The method can be used in radio network dimensioning where extensive simulations can not be run. Usage of the method is demonstrated by some examples.

The 3/sup rd/ generation cellular systems will offer services with higher bit rates compared to today's networks and therefore for an operator it is of utmost importance to exploit all possible resources to improve the capacity and quality of service of the radio network. The scope of this paper is to demonstrate with simulations how careful radio network planning can improve the network capacity and quality of service (QoS). Furthermore, it is demonstrated how the site configuration expansions can support the network capacity growth. Example results of omni-, three-, four- and six sectored site configuration simulations are presented including four different antennas and various different tilts. Furthermore a test case is shown to demonstrate the effect of a mast head amplifier (MHA) in the WCDMA uplink.

The third generation cellular systems will offer services well beyond the capabilities of today's networks. For an operator to optimise their business cases accurate methods are required for the capacity and coverage estimation. The scope of this paper is to concentrate on the first phase of the radio network planning process: radio network dimensioning. Dimensioning is providing the first rough estimate of the radio network's capabilities in terms of capacity, coverage and quality. In this work the radio network dimensioning rules and methods are introduced. Furthermore, the proposed methods are verified with radio network simulations. It has been demonstrated that the proposed methods work reasonable well even with relatively high bit rates. In addition to that it is shown that in case of WCDMA macrocell dimensioning it is not adequate to base the results on uplink only.

The ultra-high-strength, self-reinforced (SR) absorbable polymeric composites, consisting of reinforcement elements, like fibers, and of matrix polymer which have the same chemical element composition as reinforcement, were defined. A method to manufacture self-reinforced, absorbable polyglycolide (SR-PGA) rods of polyglycolide sutures (Dexon) by sintering them partially together at elevated temperature and pressure was presented. The rods with nominal diameters of 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, 3.2 mm, and 4.5 mm showed initial bending modulus and strength values of 8-15 GPa and 220-405 MPa, respectively. Their initial shear strengths were 165-255 MPa. The smallest rods (diam. 1.5 mm) lost their mechanical strength after implantation in the subcutis of rabbits in 4-5 weeks while the thickest rods retained their strength over 8 weeks. The ultra-high-strength SR-PGA rods were concluded to be suitable for fixation of cancellous bone fractures, osteotomies, and epiphyseal plate fractures where the fixation is not exposed to excessive mechanical stresses and where the loads are predominantly of a shear nature.

In the light pseudoscalar sector, we study rooted staggered chiral perturbation theory in the two-flavor case. The pion mass and decay constant are calculated through NLO for a partially-quenched theory. In the limit where the strange quark mass is large compared to the light quark masses and the taste splittings, we show that the SU(2) staggered chiral theory emerges from the SU(3) staggered chiral theory, as expected. Explicit relations between SU(2) and SU(3) low energy constants and taste-violating parameters are given. 218 páginas, 106 figuras, 89 tablas.-- arXiv:0907.5386v2.-- Report of the CKM workshop, Rome 9-13th Sep. 2008.-- et al., One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely.
